5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Gateway to Advanced Website Programming
Macromedia Dreamweaver is the first obvious starting point of this package.Dreamweaver is an excellent package that can be used to build full-featured websites. I would suggest anyone starting to use Dreamweaver to attend a course as the package can be overwhelming if you have no background in WSWG (what you see is what you get) software to build websites.

The next thing to learn would be Fireworks, which is a fairly web-centric graphics program.Fireworks can do many of the things that a full-blown graphics program like Adobe Photoshop can do, however it is more targeted at the web developer.

For those who are more daring, try the Flash product which can be used for animations among other functionality.

I really like Coldfusion.Coldfusion has many interesting "tags" that allow you to read and write databases, perform programming logic like "if's", "else's" and a myriad of other functionality like scripting, using Java, XML etc. There's no end to what you can do and keep discovering in Coldfusion.A great book is Sams Teach Yourself Coldfusion MX in 21 Days, which has all you need to know to build fairly significant Coldfusion applications.

The only drawback of Coldfusion, which is really the "endgame" of these products, is that it is not extensively used commercially by web developers.Time and time again I get chastised for not creating my web applications in more commercially acceptable PHP or Microsoft products that would make my products more universally hostable, supportable and acceptable.

We can only hope that a new version of Coldfusion is soon coming, with even more extensive and fun features to learn.

I would say, especially if you are a web programming hobbyist, and have access to some inexpensive courses to get you started, you won't be disappointed by joining the Macromedia way.

4-0 out of 5 stars eH!
As a package, this is probably the best one to buy out there!
As individual programs, there are better ones out there. Still a little pricy from Macromedia, but extremely good value as a web design package. It's best asset is the online tutorials, which make initially confusing programs, easier to deal with and more user friendly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Still Number One
Macromedia continues to improve on their ground-breaking Internet development suite of applications, bringing the MX versions to a completely new level of versatility and functionality with this release. While I found MX (the previous version) to be bug-ridden and slow, MX 2004 is a huge improvement not only in performance and stability but functionality as well. I've read reviews claiming that this is the most buggy version of the software to date, but they have all been for the Mac version. While I can't speak for that version, I can say that the Windows version of this software is far better than the previous release, and the built-in update feature of this software should ensure that it will offer the best features possible until the next upgrade.

Flash and Dreamweaver continue to be ground-breaking Web-development platforms, and this release is a huge step forward in making them accessible to both amateur and professional developers alike. I suggest that anyone serious about Web development consider this product.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great upgrade, with one glaring exception
All in all this upgrade is good, not tremendous.

The problem lies in the changes to the ActionScript Panel: The Normal mode has been removed. This means that you need to learn how to write all your ActionScript yourself, without the great aids that MX offered. There are still a few little helper menus you can use, but if you don't understand the syntax of ActionScript in detail they aren't much help. If you intend to use Flash without becoming a programmer, choose the MX version, not MX 2004.

5-0 out of 5 stars The most useful suite I've ever used
I've been in the computer game since I was 5, so I've had time to try out a lot of programs. From Adobe to Apple, Macromedia to Microsoft I've tried most of the creative suites out there.
I must say that of everything I've ever used, Studio MX 2004 is the best collection of programs you'll find (and it's worth the money if you can get an academic discount). I am a web designer by trade and I found every program in MX 2004 useful.

Flash is the recognized standard in online animation. With this program I created in 30 minutes a navbar which exceeds those of Apple and Microsoft for usability. In five minutes I created an animated advertisement (though not a very good one).

Fireworks is simply the best multipurpose image editor (photoshop is better at pure images, but not as versatile). Fireworks can do everything from having flames fly out of a friend's mouth to creating web animations that reach out to those who have not downloaded Flash Player.

Freehand is the least useful program in this suite. It has not changed at all since MX, so it is a bit behind in features and integration. Still, I used it for creating sketches of layouts or classic thoughtwebs.

Dreamweaver! Oh, what can I say about dreamweaver! Any web designer who does not praise this program is either a hard-core pure coder, or an imposter. With this new version it becomes a 10 second matter to change the font used on every page of my websites. Rather than going through 30 pages of html, I open up one css file and type a color, or font, or size change. It is a beautiful culmination of WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) technology.

While most people will balk at the $999 price tag, I say look around until you find a academic copy (I got one for $199). At a $700 discount you can buy this and a new computer to serve your creations to the world. Either way I say anyone who is a job where they need to construct creative projects for the web or presentations needs to pick up a copy of Macromedia Studio MX 2004. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Inexpensive, but not reliable
I used to like my Viking 512MB CF card a lot.I had such a card for more than a year.In that period, I used it in my camera. It's filled up for several times. Also occationally I use a card reader (SimpleTech) to write/read that card, to transfer some big files between computers. It's all fine, and suddenly one day, when the card was half full, and after a card reader reading, I got "CF card error" on my camera.Fortunately, after I delete a few pictures, I could move on.I gave the card toother people, so I don't know how it's doing now.

After that, I purchased another Viking 512MB, half year ago.I used it to transfer files for a few times, and have never filled it up using my camera yet.Now I am getting consistent "CF card error" message on my camera, even after re-format for several times, while I don't have that problem if I use another card.

One theory I heard was that a card reader may damage a card.I can not verify though.Anyway, I will have to buy another card now, and it won't be viking for this time.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't buy. Cheating Company, no customer service.
The worst customer service I have ever experienced. The lady who alledged to be the customer service supervisor said:"You got it cheaper than other brands, what else do you expect?" "Viking cheats. So what?"

1-0 out of 5 stars DON"T BUY NO CUSTOMER SERVICE
There are better cards and the customer service sucks with viking. So get something anything else!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Good product.
I bought this card for a vacation and it's been great.I can get loads of pictures without having to stop and dump them onto my laptop, or without having to bother with other cards.I've had zero issues with the card not working properly - it's been smooth sailing.I'm very pleased.

5-0 out of 5 stars Viking CF512M 512 MB CompactFlash Card
I used this on a Canon S1 IS and it performed flawlessly. Even the video mode at Super Fine 640 x 480 recording didn't skip a beat. I suspect most people don't format the Compact Flash to their camera, DO IT and you shouldn't have any difficulty. As fast a compact flash as I need. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Beautifully designed, not well-made
Buy this Tablet PC at your own risk and make sure you know about the store's return policy before you buy. I lost a $180.00 restocking fee at Circuit City because I didn't want to exchange for another same model or anything else they had in stock on the day I brought the computer back.

What I liked:
1) LOVED the Tablet PC software, can draw and write and talk into this computer. Sex? I dunno, it did get very hot.
2) LOVED the design, got compliments but no dates
3) LOVED the solid casing and bright display
4) LOVED the processor speed and wireless

What I didn't like:
1) Battery life: between 1 and 1 1/2 hours. Computer turns off after 2 second warning.
2) Runs very hot, smells like a hot iron, will press your pants for free.
3) DVD player useless, very bad quality.
4) Keyboard very uncomfortable to type on. Touchpad keys really strained my thumb.
5) Broke after I had it for 12 days.
6) Made with very bad latches, parts. It looks like the company ran out of money halfway through building the computers. What a shame.

3-0 out of 5 stars I'm not happy with it so far
I noticed that the tablet cursor jumps away when it gets close to the edges. So I exchanged it with a new one. With the new one, the clock was not very accurate. It slows down by hours overnight, plus BIOS options kept resetting.Unfortunately the return period is over.So I called customer support and told them I suspected it's a bad CMOS battery. They said there is no way I can change the battery myself without voiding the warrenty and I have to send it back for warrenty repair. They said it'd take about a week.My laptop got to them on 5/9.Now 3 weeks later and I'm still waiting.I called them and they said it's not the battery but it needs a new motherboard. They're still waiting for the parts.

Weakness:
- Heavy
- Short battery life
- Very few things you can control in BIOS options
- Tablet not very responsive (I have a Fujitsu Lifebook which has touch screen and is excellent)
- Not very reliable

Strength:
- Price

**Updated**It's been over a month and "they're still waiting for the motherboard".They don't even know when they'll get the parts. Every time I contact them, the response is they *might* have more info next week.I asked them to send me a replacement, but they refused.Note their Warrenty Policy says "Timeframes for service repairs:" is "allow 3 business days for repair and return shippment of 1 day".

The rating should really be 1 star.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good deal! But you get what you pay for!
I picked up my C3500 this week, and so far so good.I really enjoy using this product, and can't wait to spend more time with it.I didn't have any problems setting the Tablet up, and it's worked flawlessly so far. The digital ink is awesome (this is my first Tablet PC) and I can't believe how well the recognition works (I have very sloppy handwriting, yet I am handwriting this review with relative ease)! MS Onenote 2003 is great as well and is going to make organizing my school and work projects much easier!

However, not everything is perfect. The battery life is horrible. I used my C3500 to take notes during a history lecture (w/ some voice recording), and the battery almost completely drained after a little over an hour. If you need extended battery life, either purchase an extra battery or stay away (or near an outlet)!

This laptop gets HOT!! This might affect the unit's longevity, so it is a major issue. I suggest propping it up or using a cooling pad to increase airflow to the unit.

In summation, this is a really good buy. It has so many good features, but a couple of glaring issues as well. I would recommend the unit for purchase, but be aware of its shortcomings beforehand. This a great buy for a user on a budget or someone looking to add a full-featured Tablet PC to their computer fleet. Given the price point (around $1000 after rebates) and the myriad of good features it boasts, I would give the C3500 a 4 out of 5.

1-0 out of 5 stars Very poor software performance
I purchase the Averatec Tablet PC specifically to use the fetures of filling out forms then saving them as attachments in client records.Unfortunatly, every time I try to perform this task it frezzes up.I took it in to Compusa where I purchased it they sent it to averatec when I got the computer back three weeks later there is no change in the way it performs. These programs do work fine on other computers including tablets. For me I have a $1300 lemon. It also runs very hot and the battery may last 1.5 hr. if your are lucky and not realy using it.I feel like I am still always attached to a chord.

Very simply put, do not buy this computer and don't expect Compusa to help out even if you paid another $300 for there service plan.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good
This is my first tablet and it also functions as my desktop at work. The best thing about this tablet of course is the built in DVD-rom/CD-RW drive. Why no other tablet has one is beyond me. The screen is nice, and the VGA and TV out options complete the package. It also comes with a protective cover so some of you may not even need a case for it. The 4 USB 2.0 ports and PCMCIA slot are also a nice touch. Handwriting recognition software is good and gets better as you get the hang of it. The speakers aren't loud but overall sound is good. While the laptop heats up quite a bit, it is limited to a specific corner so you can rotate the screen accordingly to avoid getting burned.

Now some advice, if you want to use a tablet primarily for gaming, buy a Toshiba M200 instead, if you only need ocassional gaming this will do. Warcraft 3 plays fine, but MOH:AA doesn't even load. The stylus is responsive enough for games, so the graphics chip is what is holding it back.

If you want a tablet primarily as a web browser this is perfect. The battery only last 2 hours at best, but the 12" screen is perfect for browsing.

For on the go note taking I would suggest something smaller, about 8" diagonally. Oddly enough the screen seems to be too big to use on something other than a desk. This is where it helps to be able to switch to laptop mode and still use the pen. But there is a corner that gets quite hot, so you need to keep that in mind, especially in landscape mode because it becomes the front right corner. Note taking is best done in portrait mode, easy to get to with the push of a button.

As a portable movie player the DVD drive, 60GB HDD and big screen shine. But the built in DVD player refuses to output copyrighted DVDs to a TV, so keep in mind that you will need to get another program or change the DVDs to another format for TV watching.

Besides the TV out thing, there are other anoying things. The power button is hidden in tablet mode, so in order to turn the PC on, or come back from standby or hibernation you need to open it up and bring the keyboard out. Also, when using an external display you can't close the lid all the way, or you'll get weird mouse behaviour.

Overall I like it. For their next model I would like Averatec to use a real graphics chip, include an external power button and a joypad, and fix the lid/mouse thing. I commend them for using a DVD combo drive when nobody did and for keeping their price when nobody did as well. ... Read more

Amazon Product Description

The Basics
If portability is paramount but you need enough power for the majority of typical mobile computing tasks, the Averatec AV3250HX-01 12.1-inch Notebook PC represents a sensible and affordable solution. It certainly isn’t built to be the fastest notebook in town or a high-end gaming rig, and its 12.1-inch viewing screen may be too small for those who prefer desktop-size displays. Nonetheless, the surprisingly competent, extremely compact and definitely cost-effective Averatec AV3250HX-01 features several impressive and forward-looking amenities and capabilities such as CD and DVD burning, wireless connectivity and a large hard drive, and is thusly a great match for demanding frequent travelers on a budget.

Processor
At the heart of any computer lies the CPU (or processor), a massive collection of miniature transistors that governs the speed and power of the entire unit. Some of today's notebooks are equipped with high-end CPU's on par with those found in top-of-the-line desktop PCs, while others are quick enough only for basic duties such as word processing, email and the like. The Averatec AV3250HX-01 features a Mobile AMD Athlon XP-M 2200+ processor running at 1.66 GHz. Featuring AMD’s latest PowerNow and 3Dnow Professional technologies, this notebook-specific CPU conserves power and maximizes battery longevity while offering enough raw power for standard mobile situations.

Memory
Computers typically store information on their hard drive, but they keep frequently and recently accessed data in Random Access Memory (RAM) for faster retrieval. More RAM means more efficient computing, superior multitasking and less strain on your hard drive. The Averatec AV3250HX-01 incorporates 512 megabytes of RAM, a generous allotment for an ultra-compact notebook and certainly enough to permit satisfactory multitasking.

Video
CPUs are usually so busy doing basic calculations that they need help translating visual output, particularly 3D graphics, to the viewing screen. This is the duty of the graphics card (or graphics controller). A graphics controller with "dedicated" built-in video memory is preferable to one with "shared" video memory wherein the graphics controller borrows a portion of the all-important main system memory. The Averatec AV3250HX-01 utilizes an S3 Unichrome graphics controller with up to 32 MB of shared video memory. Though low-cost and certainly satisfactory for 2D applications such as word processing and Internet surfing and some 3D apps, this graphics controller is definitely not ideal for anyone who deals with visually taxing applications such as the latest 3D games or 3D graphics design.

Display
At 12.1 inches, the system’s XGA TFT display is smaller than that of a standard-size notebook but equal to that of other ultra-compacts. The system’s maximum resolution of 1024 by 768 is average for notebooks in this price range.

Hard Disk
If storage space is a priority, the system’s 80 GB hard drive will come as a pleasant surprise. You’ll have more than enough room for a broad range of applications and also a library of space-gobbling music and/or multimedia files.

Optical Drive
An optical drive is essential in today's computing environment. A "CD-ROM" drive allows you to install CD-based applications and play music CDs. A "CD-RW" drive adds CD burning, so you can also backup your important files to long-lasting discs and create personalized music CDs. With a DVD-ROM drive you can watch DVD movies. And with a DVD-RW drive, you can record home movies to durable discs and archive files to DVD (DVDs boast more than seven times the storage capacity of a CD). Most drives support several of these functions. This system boasts a versatile Dual DVD +/- burner through which you can do all of the above. Moreover, the "Dual" designation refers to the unit's ability to handle double layer DVDs, each of which offers nearly twice the capacity of traditional DVDs (8.5 GB vs. 4.4 GB).

Audio
The Averatec AV3250HX-01 offers adequate mobile sound via a standard AC ’97 sound card and built-in stereo speakers.

Keyboard and Controls
You'll control your notebook via a standard size keyboard and a large touch pad.

Connectivity and Expansion
The Averatec AV3250HX-01 doesn’t brandish ultra-upscale technologies such as Bluetooth or Infrared, both of which provide wireless interaction with other high-tech devices and peripherals. Nor is it equipped with a FireWire port (typically used for data uploads from digital camcorders) or a memory card reader. The unit does feature a 56K data/fax modem for low-speed dial-up Internet and email access, a 10/100 Mbit LAN for high-speed wired network and Internet communication, and 802.11g wireless technology for super-fast cord-free communication in public hot spots or other wireless networked locations. Other key amenities include three high-speed USB 2.0 ports for plug and play devices such as external drives and digital cameras, an audio-out and microphone-in port, and one Type II PC Card slot.

Operating System and Software
Averatec will pre-install a copy of Microsoft's Windows Home Edition operating system and a small assortment of useful applications including Microsoft's Works productivity package and CyberLink’s PowerDVD XP 5.0 DVD software player.

Dimensions and Weight
Many of today's most powerful notebooks are also the largest, weighing ten or twelve lbs or more and too cumbersome for extensive, continuous traveling. These are often referred to as "desktop replacements". On the other extreme are "thin and lights" or "ultra-portables", super-miniaturized units that typically aren't as powerful as their larger brethren but weigh as little as two or three lbs. and will often fit comfortably inside a large purse. The Averatec AV3250HX-01 is very small and exceedingly portable at a mere 4.5 lbs (with standard battery) and just 10.9 by 9.6 by 1 inches.

Power
The Averatec AV3250HX-01 sports a smart Lithium-Ion battery capable of three-plus hours between charges. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars law school life-saver
After spending the first two years of law school lugging around an incredibly heavy (~8 lb.) laptop and too many ridiculously heavy case books, I started looking for a lighter alternative. I stumbled upon the Averatec and tried it because I was impressed by the specs and the price. I could buy three Averatecs for the price of one Sony Vaio.

I LOVE this computer. It is light and the perfect size to tuck into any briefcase or bag. I have gotten as much as 4 hours from a fully charged battery, and have gone two days without plugging it back in by putting it in sleep mode.

It does have some drawbacks. The speakers are pretty bad, but since I only use them to play "Sugar, Sugar" by the Archies for my daughter, I can live with them. Lectures and tutorials sound fine on them.

It also does get pretty hot, but my techno-nerd husband has instilled in me the habit of always setting my notebook on a book or wooden tray (never directly on my lap or a pillow), so the fan can work pretty efficiently. I have never burned myself on this computer.

There are a few rub marks on the inside plastic around the screen, but they are really easy to remove with a pencil eraser.

I am thrilled with my purchase and have used it every day for nearly a year. It is exactly what I wanted and cost much less than I expected. I plan to continue using it when I practice, perhaps with a universal docking station. I LOVE this computer!

5-0 out of 5 stars Good value for money(...)
For the price offered, it's hard to beat. The XP-M processor is the counterpart to the Pentium-M and saves battery power. Plus, with 802.11g and an 80GB drive, it fulfills all my needs as amedia desktop as well. Great functions for a low price. [...]

Two thumbs up for Averatec.

1-0 out of 5 stars worst laptop ever
I'm using my mother's account for this. I just wanted to say that this is the worst laptop ever. The video card is really crappy. 32mb!! it's impossible to play games like the sims 2, etc. on this thing.

5-0 out of 5 stars AMD processors: fast but hot
I purchased this notebook due to four main features:
AMD processor
Weight/size
Cost
Comes with a CD backup of Windows XP (Compaq & HP systems often don't)

I had been shopping for a notebook for some time, but to purchase one with the features I wanted ( 80G hard drive, DVD/CD burner, wireless card, 512MB RAM) the cost was going to be double this price. At first I thought the 12" screen would be too small, but it is fine.I now prefer it to the 15.4" lcds.
Yes, the system runs a bit hot, but that is an inherent trait of AMD processors. It also is very fast... just a side effect of the warmth...
The best part is that the hard drive is not loaded to bloating with useless software. This system basically comes with Windows XP SP2, MS Works, Norton Antivirus (which I removed for Panda AV)
and Power DVD.I had at first considered removing Power DVD and adding Nero but Power DVD is very easy to use and basic.
I'm glad I purchased this system.

5-0 out of 5 stars Light, Functional, Perfect
This computer is EXACTLY what I was looking for in a notebook: it's lightweight (only about 4 pounds) so I can carry it easily to class, it has a dvd burner/player, and an 80gig hard drive with plenty of ram. What I like best about it though is what it DOESN'T come with: there is almost no software included with this computer, so it's perfect for somebody who is going to uninstall windows or use open-source software (Firefox, OpenOffice, ClamWin, etc). The only things I had to uninstall were Norton Anti-virus (which I replaced with ClamAV) and a few random MS programs like frontpage. You really get what you pay for with this computer: great performance with no BS software.

Some more things I like about this computer: soft, quiet keyboard, sleek silver color, small but high resolution screen, great wireless card, easy-access USB ports on the right side, contrary to some reviews I read, the fan is NOT horribly loud, the power adapter is tiny, and the touchpad is by Synaptics (so it's great).

I would not recommend this computer for anyone who doesn't already know their way around a computer, or someone who needs fancy word processing software (because all this has is MS Works).

I hope my review was helpful! ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

Take your productivity to the next level wherever you roam with the Compaq Presario R4010US notebook PC. With a powerful AMD Sempron processor and large 15.4-inch screen, you'll be able to effortlessly multitask. It also features a strong ATI Radeon Xpress video/graphics card with 128 MB of dedicated video RAM--great for multimedia presentations. It has a Firewire port for connecting an iPod and video camcorders, dual-layer DVD-/+RW drive (which also burns CDs)--wlhich can burn up to 8.5 GB of data to compatible DVDs--and a multi-format memory card reader. The R4010US also offers a large 80 GB hard drive, 512 MB of installed RAM, and 54g wireless connectivity with 125 HSM/SpeedBooster support. For a step up in price, the R4025US offers a more powerful AMD Athlon 64 processor and 1 GB of installed RAM.

The Basics

  • Hard Drive: The 80 GB hard drive (4200 RPM) is a bit above average in size for notebook PCs, providing more than enough capacity for storing documents, digital media files, and productivity software.
  • Processor: A lower-end cousin to AMD's XP processor line, the 1.8 GHz AMD Sempron 3200+ found in this desktop is compatible in speed with Intel's 2.6 GHz Celeron processor. It's speedy enough for everyday computing needs and running office productivity software, but won't be quite enough for higher-end video editing or 3D gaming. This processor features AMD's Cool'n'Quiet Technology, which conserves power while also keeping the notebook's decibels to a minimum. It also features up to an 1800 MHz front-side bus (FSB) and a 256 KB L2 cache. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance.)The 512 MB of built-in memory (2 x 256 MB, DDR SDRAM) is a good start for power users, and it features a faster than average speed (333 MHz). It has two memory slots in total, with a maximum memory expansion up to 2 GB (2 x 1024 MB).
  • CD/DVD Drive: Offering the latest in DVD writing technology, the V2220US multiformat DVD/CD drive is compatible with both DVD+ and DVD- disc formats as well as dual-layer DVD+R discs, which can store up to 8.5 GB of data.
  • Keyboard & Mouse: This notebook has a 101-key keyboard and a touchpad with on/off button and dedicated vertical/horizontal Scroll Up/Down pad.
Screen, Graphcs and Sound
The high-definition 15.4-inch WXGA BrightView widescreen display--with 1280 x 800-pixel resolution--has 18 percent more screen information than a 15-inch XGA, providing visibility of two applications side by side for greater productivity and multi-tasking. The BrightView feature provides a 20 percent brighter screen for better definition and 33 percent wider viewing angle for more accurate, off-center viewing when sharing files files. Video and graphics are powered by the ATI Radeon Xpress 200M, which provides 128 MB of dedicated video memory. It also has HP Premium audio and internal stereo speakers.

Connectivity and Expansion Slots
The R4010US has an integrated 54g wireless LAN that's fully compatible with 802.11b/g wireless networks. The 125 HSM/SpeedBooster support will enable it to be ready for tomorrow's 125 Mbps wireless LANs. It also includes a next-generation ExpressCard 54/34 card slot, which lets you take advantage of thinner, faster, and lighter expansion cards for even more advanced wireless, networking, storage, and security features. You get a very good offering of connectivity options, which does include super-fast USB 2.0 and Firewire:

  • 4 USB 2.0 ports for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players
  • 1 FireWire (also known as IEEE 1394 or i.Link) port for connecting digital video camcorders and other peripherals
  • 1 VGA monitor port
  • 1 S-Video port for connecting to a TV
  • 1 PCMCIA (or PC Card) slot (Type I/II, 32-bit)
  • 1 headphone jack and 1 microphone jack
  • 1 Expansion Port 2 connector
  • 6-in-1 Digital Media Reader for Secure Digital cards, MultiMedia cards, Memory Sticks, Memory Stick Pro, SmartMedia, and XD Picture Cards
It also has an integrated 56K modem (V.90) and an RJ-45 LAN network port (for a 10/100 Ethernet connection to networks and DSL/cable modems).

Preloaded System and Software
This system comes with the Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2 operating system with Advanced Security Technologies, which helps to reduce unwanted downloads and pop-ups while surfing the Web. It also comes preloaded with Microsoft Works (for working with word processing and spreadsheet documents), Norton AntiVirus 2005 (with 60 days of complimentary updates), Microsoft Money 2005, MSN Encarta Plus, Sonic RecordNow, Apple iTunes, Adobe Photoshop Album Starter Edition, Intervideo WinDVD, and MuVee Autoproducer.

1-0 out of 5 stars Return to sender
I haven't even plugged these in and am already annoyed. The cord is designed moreto show off the SONY logo instead of comfort or what you're use to with any other set. I am not going to sacrifice comfort just so I can act as their billboard.Instead of meeting in the middle, both L & R wires come together on one side, so you have this stupid metal clip/logo hanging right next to your face, hitting you as you move around.I tried them on and was instantly annoyed.Who the hell designed these stupid things?Keep looking, these suck.

4-0 out of 5 stars Comfort, comfort, comfort
Did I mention that these are verycomfortable?Well, they fit snug and comfy and sound very clear. When it comes time to replace the awful headphones that probably came with your portable player you might try these.Essentially these have the same specs as another pair Sony makes that is black and without the extension cord. If color is not an issue take the black pair. Why? Well they don't come with an extension like these do. The extension is a pain. If you use them without the extension they will be snugand good only if you re not moving and a little person. If you are average size or bigger and on the go with your portable the original cord is too short. If you run , bike, walk or skate for exercise with music the original cord is no good. If you use the cord it is overly long. I mean you could probably strangle yourself in cord there is so much. I don't get why they didn't stick with the original formula which was perfect. Anyway the sound is very good compared to most originals that come with portables. I got a pair for one of my sons and he likes them, except the length or shortness of the cord. One more thing, the price at Amazon seems better than most other outlets since theyseem to charge up to $20 more.

3-0 out of 5 stars Very nice sound, but...
.. the left earphone has gone nearly dead after three months.Probably my fault. The wires are *very* thin, and I pinched one of them in the lid of the plastic case.Going to look for something a bit more sturdy.
--------------------------------
I gave this a lower rating earlier because I thought one of the earbuds had gone south due to a pinched thin wire. Not so.If one or both of the earbuds loses volume and clarity, check the little screen covering the speaker nozzle. There should be a tiny pinhole in the center of it.If it gets clogged with earwax, the sound will drop dramatically.*Carefully* clean it out with a pin, and all will be well again!
--------------------------------
Update: Decided to try a set of Shure E3C headphones.Wowser.Yes, they were more expensive, but not does their sound beat these, they're also more efficient.I was getting 2-3 hours max on my Zen Micro with these Sony headphones.Battery time has doubled with the more efficient ones.My original rating stands. These will suck your battery down.

4-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT HEADPHONES!
These headphones are great! The sound quality is excellent and the in-ear style is much more comfortable than any other type of headphone. Good price also. I use these headphones for running, climbing, hiking and it's been under the sun, in the sand, accidentally in water and been through some tough treatment, yet withstands and plays great, even after 1.5 years!

3-0 out of 5 stars Sound and price Good, cord BAD!
What others have said about the good sound quality of these earphones is true, and they are also very comfortable, much more so than the Ipod phones that I retired when I got these. This is my second set which I got on recommendations of some of the reviewers. The first set was white, and the insulation on the wires of those started dissolving and falling off after only six weeks. Some reviewers said the wire on the black ones was better so I tried those.I sit here another six weeks later with headphones that are disintegrating, the insulation has turned to a soft putty-like consistency and is just falling off the wiring in hunks.Perhaps users that wear the product outside of clothing where perspiration is less of an issue would be more satisfied with this product, unfortunately job safety prevents me from wearing the Ipod and it's wiring exposed. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars terrible service
My wife and I wasted hours and hours trying to get HP service. HP has outsourced customer service to several developing countries, and each time we called, the representatives were unable to locate the record of our previous call.We were told time and again that we would be contacted by a "case manager" but that never happened. After weeks of trying, it became obvious that we need to discard the product (still under warrantee) and buy a new (non-HP) product ourselves.

1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible software
Installation is terrible with lots of bugs.Look at the HP site and you will see a long list of fixes.Your job is to try to figure out which one is the one that will work for you. When the other reviews mentioned "several hours" they were right. The best advice was from an Amazon review here. The reviewer correctly advised to uninstall Mcafee. That works.Nowhere on the HP site is that mentioned so you wade through the trial and errors trying to fix the installation. The product works but it is a real shame that HP never tested the installation and allow customers to go through this mess. The one star rating is for the software installation. You will see if you buy this.

4-0 out of 5 stars High price but you get what you pay for
I have had this piece for close to a month now and all is well. I have to say it was on the very high end of what I was willing to spend but the wireless feature and double sided printing were what made me part with the money.
Setup was a breeze. Make sure you find all the hidden packing tape before trying to use as there are pieces you have to really look for. Installation was long only due to the size of the HP Imaging software. I was up and running in about 45 min. and ran into a update software problem as it would download the first update but then didn't recognize the printer and download anymore updates. I skated around this by hooking up the network cable and it then reconized it and downloaded the updates and then returned everything to the wireless configuration and no problems. Also loaded up the laptop with the program and no problems.
I havn't used everyfunction yet but and impressed with the layout and ease of use both on the unit itself and the HP computer program. Printing is fast and neat and the fax works great. So far no problems to mention and with as smooth as things have been I'm not worried.
I almost didn't buy this because of other poor reveiws of this item but instalation was a snap and was able to work around small problems even being a computer dummy. There are cheaper items out there so unless you will use everything on it I'd downsize but if this is what you need it's great.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent except 2 things.
I love this printer, except for 2 things:

1:The Margin issue addressed in another review but there is another problem that is extremely vexing if you use this as a Stand-alone copier:

2: If you buy this for the 2-sided copy feature (copying a stack of 2-side documents automagically) you are in for a surprise.

If you insert a stack of say... 10 documents, and copy them 1-sided, it works fine. It will copy the entire document and print to the minumum margins that the 7410 will do.

BUT:if you have a stack of 2-sided documents and let the 7410 copy them as 2-sided documents you will find that the front of each now has been "cut off" at a margin of .625" at the top and bottom and the back of the document is cut off with a margin of .625" at the top.

If you are copying a stack of Real Estate Contracts, you will now find that your copies don't have the Signatures at the bottom! They are cut off!
And you cannot reduce the size when using 2-side copying to get around this. The only way to get around it is to treat them as single-sided documents, run them through, then put the printed copies back into the paper tray upside down and copy the other side.

This is using the 7410 as a stand-alone device.I believe this is a problem with the firmware of the printer itself, as HP sent me a new one and it still had the same problem even after spending 2 hours on the phone with tech support.

If you don't plan to use the 2-side copy function, then this will not be an issue for you and it should be a great printer.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Really Great All In One - With Really Great Support
12-Mar-2005 Update...
Been using for a few weeks. Would I buy this again? in a heartbeat.Since last writing, I've installed the hp software on a 2nd networked (wired) computer. I made sure to uninstall McAfee and the hp software installed perfectly. Reinstalled McAfee and 2nd computer was up & running.

My main use has been paper reduction; scanning existing documents to PDF format. It's very simple - really, load originals in Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) and either initiate the scan from any computer on my network or from the 7410 front panel. From the front panel I can select the destination, if I care to.The hp software allows scanning to multiple formats (I use PDF) and allows selection of scanning double sided or single sided, color or B&W, etc, etc. Double-sided from the ADF flys & you can walk away or do something else on your computer. If you place an original on the flat glass, cropping (when desired) is simple & intuitive. Merging pages is simple & flexible. Paper passing through the ADF is smooth - hardly a jam, and when it did (a) I should have scanned the wrinkled original on the glass & (b) jams are easy to clear. If you too would like to cut back on saving paperwork, this All In One does a great job of converting your paper into electronic format.

Copying and printing work great. Right now my focus is scanning, so after using more features, I'll attempt another update.

1st writing:

Had I written this the day I got this machine, I'd be writing a much different review. As other reviewers have mentioned, I too suffered from an incomplete software install on a wired Peer-To-Peer LAN (Home Office Network).I spent 4.5 hours (non-stop) on the phone Sunday afternoon, and the Level 1 Tech was VERY good. We got almost everything working. It was this tech who suggested he now turn me over to a level 2. Unfortunately, none available. He urged I call back around 8 PM, which I did - provide my case # and request an L2. I got another L1, and this fellow immediately knew the root problem - McAfee tools. You THINK you disable them (Start> Run> Services, then stop & disable, etc.) but they are not really turned off. I didn't have enough energy to do a McAfee uninstall, HP uninstall, HP reinstall, then McAffe reinstall. I did this Monday night, w/ a Level 2 HP tech from 7 to 10:30 PM.

The problem IS McAfee Privacy Service - this prevents the final install from completing.Bottom line: 1) UNINSTALL, not disable, ALL McAFEE >>> BEFORE <<< putting the HP CD in your drive. Then and only then perform the HP install.

Bcause of reiteritive install attempts, we had to perform much diagnostics, and repairs. It worked.

I went from 100% negative to 100% positive. I have NEVER had this type support - HP took ownership of the problem and would not give up - they would not quit!

OK, so how does this beast work? Unbelievably good.It is such a pleasure to have a duplex scanner and duplex printer, and one which can be controlled via the computer when you don't care to be at the machine's front panel.

Having two trays is a luxury. The scanning goes pretty quick, as does the duplex printing. I own quite a variety of color inkjet HP 7960, Canon, Epson, etc.) & B&W laser (HP) printers, and have had a number of large (D and E-size) color pen plotters (HP).The quality of the All In One (AIO) is, at least to me and my needs, every bit as good as the HP 7960, if not better. And faster.

I have NO complaints w/ quality as I do a side-by-side printing from HP 7960 and AIO 7410.

I cannot comment on Wireless, as not having a need for it, I shut it off. I'm a wired network thoughout 4100 sq. feet and 5 computers which is the max. # HP recommends for either wired or wireless.

This is my 1st review at Amazon, so if updates are allowed, I'll post back after I have adequate time to thoroughly investigate.

For the moment, other than the software fiasco (McAfee's doing - NOT in my mind HP's fault), I am NOW pleased w/ my purchase.

Expensive at $499? yes - but a heck of a lot less money than the Fujitsu $1300 duplex scanner I would have bought Sat AM if the store was open! Thank goodness thay were closed - saved me $800!!

SO - IF YOUR PROBLEMS ARE SOFTWARE RELATED, get on the phone to HP Tech Support. They were fantastic.
