4-0 out of 5 stars Incredible printer
As many other reviews both here on Amazon and elsewhere attest, this is an incredible printer. The photos are amazing and the printer is really fast.Unlike previous printers where you more or less went and did something else while waiting for a print-out, you can just hit print and see the photo shooting out of the printer. It is also amazingly quiet. You literally cant hear the printer at work...

However, I do feel that the printer puts a little too much magenta in its output.A few (and only a small percentage) appeared to be redder than what was on screen or what is natural.I have read that this can corrected by not selecting vivid in the options while printing, but I have not tried it yet. This is perhaps the reason for the four stars (I would have given it a 4.5 if Amazon let me).

Finally, I have tried both the Canon Photo Paper Pro (their best) and the Konica Glossy Photo Paper (professional weight) and the Konica paper is way better. The colors are so much better than the Canon's and I doubt I will ever use the Canon paper again. You should really try the Konica paper with this printer (and perhaps with other brands as well).Best of all, its cheaper and heavier than the Canon paper...

3-0 out of 5 stars Way extra Magenta in pictures
I don't own this printer - I have the i960, and don't like the extra magenta you see in pictures.Close friends bought the 8500 and have even more magenta and green in the pictures.I thought I was just extremely picky but they were overwhelmed by the extra red and green in the pictures.

It's a shame Canon isn't paying more attention to accurate color representation vs. VIVID colors - vivid doesn't looks so great on flesh tones!

Make sure if you buy this printer you really try it out during the return period.

****Update*****
Since apparently I wasn't being very helpful - I thought I would hopefully add some helpful information, aside from what might appear to be a rant against Canon.I LOVE my Canon camera, BTW, and I loved my Canon S820 printer.

So, let me add:

1) Canon Photo Paper Pro will show MUCH more accurate color than the Canon Photo Paper Plus Glossy.(This is one of my gripes - if I'm trying to fine-tune colors in a picture, I have to print tests on the expensive Photo Paper Pro because the colors are completely different from, say, high-res photo paper.

2) When you're printing, in the Canon printer settings, set Color Adjustment to Manual. Then Click "Set..." and check the "Enable ICM" box.In this window, you can also fine-tune color balance settings although I've never had any luck here.

3) Good points about Canon printers:they seem to use ink sparingly and the separate ink tanks are nice. They're fast. The resolution is great - even on my s820 prints you'd be hard-pressed to see dots or banding. The photo prints are glossy throughout just like "real" photos. No de-glossed black areas.I haven't noticed any fading in prints I've done, for over 3 years.

So, my hopefully helpful summary is:use Photo Paper Pro and make sure you're happy with the color in your prints.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous for color
I've been searching for a good photo printer for ages. I tried an Epson and was so fed up with clogged heads (and ink consumption!) that I took it back as a defective product. The Epson PictureMate didn't last a day. (*miserable* beast of a printer!)So. I did my research. I read reviews until I needed new glasses. I took my own memory card to test printers, and I found the new love of my life! The Canon Pixma ip8500 is a *jewel* of a printer. It's the same ink/ink set/printer head as the $500 ip9900, but for $150 less.

PROS:
1) Set up was fast and easy (but come on - this no cable nonsense is getting old. Spring for the blasted cable, Canon!)
2) Right out of the box the colors were *better* than the digital processing done on Kodak paper by professional equipment.
3) 8 separate ink tanks means no more wasted ink. Cyan and magenta will be the first to go.
4) 100 pictures later - ink is still very full
5) I'm finicky, and after I've done my Photoshop work, I want the picture to print exactly as I see it - with the exception of *minimal* cropping (after some tweaks) this printer *delivers*. Gorgeous color, properly rendered. ZERO ink jet detailing in skies.
6) Prints up to 11x14, and has a tray for additional paper. Feeder holds plenty of heavyweight photo paper or card stock.
7) quiet as the grave! I often turn to look at it to see if it's working, because you can't hear it!

CONS:
1) Does not read memory cards. Must read from camera, or be hooked to computer. (but it does use USB 2.0 so is very fast)
2) Like most consumer level printers, this one doesn't do straight b&w photos well. Some images were "light b&w" and the printer interpreted this distinctly on the purple/blue side. The very darkest pictures fared better, but were still noticeably inferior to professional processing.

I can't speak highly enough about this printer. It's performance is almost without flaw (and hey, even the b&w pictures aren't *bad* they just aren't the *best*) Buy this baby and you will NOT be doing the trek to your neighborhood developer!

5-0 out of 5 stars What a GREAT Product
I had some minor problems with my previous Canon S800 printer, mostly in handling thicker paper (business card stock) so decided to upgrade. I knew I wanted a Canon printer and my choice came down to the iP5000 or the iP8500. I spent a lot of time searching the internet for reviews and talking to Canon tech reps. I got a lot of information but it still left me in a quantry, still between the same two printers.

I think the information I found will be helpful to everyone who's goal is to find the best photo printer. The iP5000 is being pushed by Canon (rightfully so) as new technology, which focuses mainly on the small droplet size of the ink heads (1 Picoliter). The smaller the droplet size the better is the resolution (definition). Although the iP8500 has a 2 Picoliter droplet size, it has 2 additional ink cartridges-red & Green, which just happen to be primary colors. As Canon noted, this gives you an almost infinite range of colors allowing for "true-to-life" color.

My deciding factor was the droplet size of my current S800 -- it is 4 Picoliter.By buying the 8500, I decrease the droplet size, increasing my photo definition 200% and I added a broad range of colors to produce more accurate colors.

But these are just numbers. What was I really going to see and would I appreciate the difference. The answer is a resounding YES!!!!!

I had a picture of an Egret next to a pond. The 8500 changed the color of the water to the truer color as defined by my 19" flat screen monitor. The rocks along the edge of the pound on the S800 photo seemed blurred as if caused by the depth of field while the 8500 photo showed the rocks clear as crystal showing their rough edges.

Another photo of a brilliant California early morning red sky(actually more orange), which I always thought was a brilliant picture paled in comparison to the bright, vivid colors from the 8500.

A comment on the StevesDigicam website on this subject said: "...the iP8500 prints show a visibly wider color gamut than those printed with 6 or 5 color photo printers.Noticeably more vibrant are the reds and greens and the ability to reproduce varying shades of orange that prove difficult to impossible on the other inkjet printers".

Bottom Line: If you're an avid photographer and want your prints to accurately represent the quality of your photo equipment (I have a digital Rebel), I highly recommend the Canon iP8500.

I hope this information is helpful to your selection.

4-0 out of 5 stars Jackie Brown Says: Great Printer; Support Needs Improvement
J. Morrison I've encountered this driver (won't install) problem before with several other Canon printers. The issue has to do with Canon's idiotic insistence on making the driver (and Easy Photo Print) install via Microsoft's Internet Explorer browser only. If Mozilla's Firefox or Safari or any other non-Internet Explorer browser is set as your default browser, the printer will not install. Canon's website is equally IE-centric and horrible to navigate if you don't use Internet Explorer. Nowhere on their site or within the installation instructions does it tell yout that you must use IE to load the drivers and software. This is inexcusable in 2005. Make sure you let them know how irritated this situation makes you.

Anyway, to solve the problem, temporarily set IE as your default browser and then install the drivers. This worked like a charm for me with the Canon s9000, i560, i960 and i9900. When you're all done, return to your regularly scheduled default browser. :) ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Canon Powershot SD200 Elph-3.2 MP-The best of the best
I have watched many people such as friends, family, and others purchase and use different digital cameras. One day I was at my best friends house in Tacoma, WA, and her daughter stopped by.She wanted everyone to see her digital camera pictures she had taken while fighting fires in Idaho. It just so happened that she had a Canon Powershot SD200 Elph. She seemed to know her way around the camera quite well and she began to show us all the pictures and video clips that she was so proud of.I have to say that I was absolutly amazed with the steller quality of the pictures and videos taken with the Canon Powershot SD200 Elph. The colors were perfect as well as the overall picture quality. However, what really captured my attention was the quality of the videos/movies the camera had taken. She plugged the camera into a 27 inch television and the quality was close to that of a DVD.Heck, I was sold already.Coupled with the excellent sound quality I said to myself that I was going to get that exact camera some day.Well, I just purchased the camera and it is everything I expected and more. I am having a blasttaking pictures for once in my life. I am absolutely certain that the Canon Elph Powershot Digital Camera is the finest on the market today.I say this because I have seen many other digital cameras perform, and none that I have seen come close to the performance, qaulity, workmanship, and dependability of the Canon SD Elph series. One other remark if you don't mind.I have an older Canon AE1 35mm camera.I thought that it provided me with extreamly good pictures and dependability over the years always using the automatic setting, but the Canon Elph SD200 actually takes better quality pictures than the Canon AE1.Now that is saying something. If I was you, I would not hesitate to purchase a digital camera because they are so easy to use in our computer driven society.Get a Canon Powershot SD Elph and you won't be sorry in any way, shape, or form.I can say with 99% certainty that the purchase will be one of the best investments you will ever make. Hey, it's a very cool camera!

4-0 out of 5 stars Fast, small, great pictures. Flash too bright.
Got the kingston 512 sd card to go with it. Takes great pictures everytime with the flash off, even at night. Sometimes, using the flash seems to whitewash the pictures.

Favorite feature has to be the green rectangles that tell you where the multi-zone autofocus is aiming and the ability to zoom in on a photo you have taken in the cameras lcd. Get a good case, and the LCD should be fine. I take it everywhere.

Hint: Wear cargo pants. Then carrying around a phone, mp3 player, and a camera will be effortless and convenient.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't plan on Canon honoring the warranty
Loved the camera for about 5 months. Great pictures, wonderful size, would have rated it a 5 star until the flash quit working. Canon is charging $100 for repairs because there was a tiny dent in the flimsy housing so that voids the warranty. I won't buy another Canon but I can understand why those who don't have problems with it would love this camera.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great macro, color. Tough little camera.
I like this camera so much I bought a second one after my first one got stolen. I have other SLR/pro cameras, but take the most shots on this as it's TINY and with me always. It takes great macro shots and has terrific color. The 'night' setting has been fun too. Am surprised to read about others' problems with the LCD -- my cam is always getting thrown around in bags and pockets and never gets a scratch. The only con would be this camera has a few more red-eye issues than others around this size.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good camera for amateur use
I have 2 kids and wanted a camera that I could carry with me that wouldn't be bulky, eat up batteries and had a fast shutter speed. I have had mine a week and have been playing around with it and am so far pleased with my purchase. The camera is small, easy to use, and the larger LCD screen is really nice. I want to mention that I did not purchase this camera with the intent to print my own pictures, I just upload them to my computer and make CD albums and/or sometimes I e-mail them to friends. I did notice one thing that I am not thrilled about - unless there is a lot of lighting the pics are sometimes blurry. For example: OUTDOOR pics when the sun is out turn out GREAT, no blurs or anything and that is with my kids running, but if it's not really sunny you might need to use the flash. INDOOR pics turn out good if there is a LOT of light otherwise you have to use the flash, I took a piture of my ceiling fan on high and w/out the flash it was a tan blur, with the flash on there was absolutely no blur at all - you could see each individual fan blade prefectly. So the flash makes a big difference! I have been leaving it on auto so the camera will use it when it feels it needs to and that seems to be working. Overall it is a good camera for the average user, and for the money its a good deal!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars DSC F828
Just upgraded to the F828 from the DSC-S85. Maybe I am used to the Sony menu and how everything works. Right from the box this camera is sweet. Fast shutter and great color! I looked at this camera and the Canon Rebel xt and Nikon equivalent. Glad I went with Sony!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Power for the Price
I love this camera. Once you learn the different shooting modes and features you'll be taking pro-quality shots. The night-framing feature is excellent for nighttime without the overbright characteristics of using just the flash. You can take roughly 300 pictures using a 1 gig compact flash card at 3264x2448 (highest resolution).

I also purchased this with the Sony accessory kit. The extra battery, multi-coat protector lens, and carrying bag have been very useful from the start.

Considering my old Sony F505v lasted me 5 years this one will probably last at least 10 more! A decade worth of high resolution memories is worth the price of admission!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Tempramental Masterpiece!
I have owned my 828 about a year now and I have been amazed at the bashing this camera has and still does take. Even to the point of 828 online clubs devoted to the pictures and defense of this amazing camera! And yes this camera is amazing. As I have stated in my other reviews I sell cameras for BestBuy as well as work as a professional photographer so I will give you the straight and narrow on this camera. Ready? The fringe thing-I have taken about 2000 pictures with my 828 and in only one of them was I able to reproduce the famed purple fringing effect, this was using a long shutter exsposure on a city street at night, 1999 other shots in as many situations and not a trace. I even tried pointing the camera directly at the lights in the the bestbuy store (you know what those look like!) and guess what? "Nada" I just got a great picture of the bestbuy ceiling. So the conclusion on fringe? Get over it, it is such a rare occurance that it hardly warrants concearn. Noise: here is where a tend to agree with most critics your pics will get mad noisy at the 800 ISO setting, but few digital cameras wont, hell even Canon's 20D starts losing luster at a 800 ISO setting and that camera will go all the way upto 3200!! So turn down the ISO and take your pictures or learn to use photoshop or something and fix them. I mean this is a DIGITAL camera right? The thing these bozos don't tell you is that removing ISO noise from an image is an extremely easy thing to do, again, get over it. Having addressed the two main gripes about the 828 what are you left with? Lets start with the four color CCD. I have said this before and I'm saying it now: The 828 has the best color of ANY digital camera out there today! If your into outdoor pics, close ups, night shots (turn that ISO down) your pictures and thier color will be amazing! By the way touching on low light pics and the 828, I do alot of long exsposure shots with the 828 and they are always top notch! Battery life on the 828 is an impressive 240-300 minutes on a full charge! (no kidding)The Lense- the biggest part of the camera and the biggest attraction if you like focusing your camera yourself (with a little digital help). The lense is a Ziess made with little to no barrel distortion (flower lense hood is included! BONUS!!) and quite versitile as far as the focal ranges it will cover, this also brings me to the cameras construction, this baby is heavy but damn! it sure feels good! The 828 is the 2nd largest in its class, so if your into pocket toys you best be looking at Casio or HP cameras (sorry that was mean) The 828 is really a SLR camera with a lense on it you can't take off. End of story. The body reminds me of my Sony F-707 wich I loved ( probably the best 5MP camera ever made) The tilting body is a Godsend for the pro and joe shmoe alike! The eye piece is among the best out there and id diopter adjustable, the LCD screen is a little small 1.8 inches but is extrememly clear and sharp so it works for me. The 828 like its little brother the V3 shoots on Memory stick as well as Compact flash type I & II, and unlike the V3 the 828 can use micro-drives (I have a 4 gig in mine) All the controls on the camera are well placed and easy to master even for the beginner. However I found i got slightly better pictures in the "P" mode than in full auto, but a novice should always start in the auto mode. The 828 boasts the same range of shutter speeds and apatures as the DSC-V3 (see my review) wich as I have said before I think is a sane selection of ranges! All your options are useable so play, play, play!! The scene modes are pretty run of the mill: Landscape, night shot, low light portrait, snow, tropical sun, and candle light. The white balancing features are pretty dead bang but watch out for the blues- I leave mine set to auto unless im shooting outside then I'm pretty safe. Sonys X-32 flash and this camera are a match made in heaven but thanks to the ACC port your old one will work too, but I can't stress enough the benefit of Sony's. Sony still has the on board crop feature. (other cameras do this but only Sony lets youdetermine the resolution of the cropped image!I have just barely touched on the features and capabilities of this camera ( I don't want to use up all of amazons web space) so let me leave you with these thoughts. Currently I own and run the following digital cameras: F-828, DSC-V3, Nikon 8700, and the Nikon 8800, all four of these are eceptionally high rated cameras, out of all the 828 remains my right hand camera. I will say in all honestly this is not an easy camera to use, It will make you think about your shots, make you work for them. This is NOT a point and shoot camera, it was never meant to be (people who love this camera will tell you this) So why all the bad press? Well, with this camera Sony made an awful lot of professionals toys run of the mill, this camera broke down alot of technology barriers (still does in fact)So alot of people went on the offensive looking for the fly in the ointment, wich can be found with any camera on the market today. So why the fuss? this is a genuine technology breakthru people, the real deal, and there ain't no going back. I apologize for the lack of technical data in this review I love this damn camera so much I tend to spend more time defending it than specing it out! But the proof is in the pictures so with that I'll rest my case. Because the strongest feature of the 828 is the most important one "the pictures are fantastic!!" If you want an easy to use camera, move on. If you like to fuss with things and tinker or play with your camera, have fun with your camera, create with your camera then add this puppy to your shopping cart. cause this is your beast.I have heard Sony is working on a successor to the 828 I can only hope it is half the camera! Bottom line... don't believe the hype or sour grapes folks this is the state-of-the art and has been for nearly 2 years. Thanks for reading, good luck in pictures!!

3-0 out of 5 stars A Toy for those who wish to learn.
At first, the F828 is very impressive. It can take huge pictures. You can take some really awesome pictures with this but it also limits you in a way that a camera that costs $800-$1000 should not.

Problems :
- Noise gets way too noticable, even on ISOs above 100 or 200.
- Flash is way over over-powered, even at the lowest setting, 90% of the time, people still get really washed out.
- In almost any reflective or bright surfaces in pictures - the camera will create "Purple Fringe" - I cannot stand having a bunch of purple where it doesn't belong.

That being said - I have taken many excellent pictures with this camera, but I think this ended up being more a learning tool than a camera I could count on to take excellent pictures always. I personally no longer like Sony as a result of me owning and using this camera.

I recommend Canon - the 300D or the 350D(the XT) or if you're willing to save up more money, the 20D. A huge line of lenses and acceccories that you can count on not to create a big blob of purple on a jacket zipper.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Camera
I got this camera in November 04, and have had lots of time to play with it.I have got some great shots with it.I am far from being a pro, but who knows!Maybe after I learn all of the settings and what they all do, I will look like a pro!
I recommend this product to anyone that is looking for a great camera with lots of features for taking some great photos. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good so far
I went and did my research and wasn't so concerned on price as long as the laptop had some of the latest and greatest.I went and did my reads in PC mag, consumer reports (membership req) as well as Amazon reviews of similar models.I was sorry to read the other guy who rated this computer and had such issues, and hope that your follow up will have some good news for you as well as giving us other Toshiba users some faith in the support group of that company!

I purchased my Toshiba from an online reseller and so far no major issues and I am adding more RAM as 512 should be the min.I had some driver issues when upgrading to XP pro but again a little patience and time and web site downloads from Toshiba and MS windows and all seems to be fine.

I have yet to do anything major with it and I have not loaded on some space hogging software I use, that will be the test. Wireless worked fine and I am pleased with the screen. Cooling fans are loud but not a big deal but it heats up hot and fast so it needs to be cooled!

Being at 3.3 gig it is one of the largest laps or desktops out there at the moment, however, in no time 3.3 will be small! All I can say is do you research, ask others, read reviews, make sure you get warranty/support and hell if it isn't working, fight to return it, get another or get your money back and go after another, you the consumer have rights look for return/exchange policies within the quickest time frames, ABC or Fox news consumers hotlines to help if needed too, just don't allow them to walk on you especially if it's the product that is the problem!I must admit from past experience going through a Best Buy or Circuit City, I have NOT been pleased with the "I don't care attitude" once you have purchased from them. Just think, research, no impulse and if it's real new technology wait, as it needs to be tested and or competition formed and prices drop as well as bugs fixed.

Will advise if I come up against anything out of the ordinary or that I read has happened to others hence being a common product flaw, which Toshiba would address if enough people report the issue or issues.More to come.

1-0 out of 5 stars Never buy this computer, or TOSHIBA
This is the worst experience I have ever had in buying a computer.
I ordered this through amazon.com with fastest shipping option. And I got it 2 days later. OK. so far so good.

First, I turned on the computer and everything worked well.
But after I uninstalled Norton Untivirus ( 90 days trial which is pre-installed to this computer) in order to install the newest version of it. After the uninstallation, it asked me to restart the computer and I clicked "OK". and..... it never reboots.
Just its fans are screaming out loud and the power lit is on, but there is nothing on the screen. What the hell is going on?

I immediately called the customer service. First time I told them this situation, he said he would pass this matter to "level 2". and He said they were gonna call me back soon. But, as you imagine, NO CALL.

So, I call them again and the other guy picked up the phone. and asked me to bring it to UPS or ask them to send me a box, which I have to pay $25.

Tomorrow, I will bring my laptop to UPS and send this to TOSHIBA repair center. I have no idea when the hell I can get this back, with perfectly repaired.

I will write what happened later.

5-0 out of 5 stars So Far So Good
I bought this yesterday and it's been running consistently at 54 Mbs with no noticeable interruptions, the setup was fairly easy as well. I'm new to Linksys and felt the need to go wireless, so I got this to go along with the wireless-G PCI adapter for my desktop and the two seem like a match made in heaven. Pretty soon I'll add a laptop in the wireless mix, but as the title says....so far so good.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great device.
It has been working flawlessly since I received it.I already had an earlier non-wireless linksys router which still working after several years.Replaced it because of need to go wireless. After reading about disconnects, reboots, pricing and poor quality on other routers decided to stick with Linksys. The company was taken over by Cisco Systems which is the premier router manufacturer in the world that is definetely a plus.Easy to set up.No reboots, disconnects or any other problem of any sort.Working with 2 wusb54gs at home. Have done backups of 23 Gigs without a problem.Recently set up a wrt54g at the rectory and connected a windows 98SE pc with a wusb54g. The priest has been very happy to be able to share the dsl connection. You can't go wrong with these products on price, features, quality and company stability. I wish you luck if you decide on another brand.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Router with a Very Effective Firewall
I finally decided to jump on the wireless band wagon because I wanted to have the ability to use my laptop anywhere on my property. The router was easy to setup right out of the box.It was also easy to enable WPA encryption.WEP is also supported by this unit but WEP is much less secure.Because the router has 4 ethernet ports, you can setup a wired and wireless network to work together. You can also just use this for wireless internet access if that's all you need.Range is very good if you use this with it's partner adapter WPC54GS which also has speedbooster. You can see how good the firewall is on this unit if you test it by going to www.grc.com and using the SheildsUp program.

Whatever you do, make sure you enable some sort of encryption, either WEP or the stronger WPA.You will also need to make sure your other wireless equipment supports the type of encryption you decide to use.

4-0 out of 5 stars EZ Set-up, but Use the Linksys Website
A CD is included with the Linksys router which guides you through
the physical set up (which is very easy). It also guides you
through the software set-up.However, I encountered a few
problems with the software set-up.

However, Linkysys has an *on-line* set up Wizard through their website.I found the software installation much easier using this on-line service. My computer and a laptop were up and running in a few minutes. I suggest people who are new to this technology might skip the enclosed installation CD and go straight to the website for set-up

Once I was up and running, everything worked well.My desk top (not wireless) works fine and my new laptop downloads at an incredibly fast rate.Aside from the software installation glitch, I am very pleased with the product.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent IF and ONLY IF sveasoft firmware used
Thanks largely to Cisco the WRT54GS *becomes* a great appliance when one uses the GPL licensed Sveasoft Alchemy firmware. The default firmware is so-so.Since Linksys released the firmware under GPL license the Sveasoft firmware is also GPL.This means anyone can distribute the Sveasoft firmware, and anyone can use it without paying anyone else a dime!

Google for: sveasoft individual

to get your legally free copy today!

This appliance works well as a MULTIPORT wireless bridge.Use it for your Xbox! It's waaaay better than the junk microsoft is pushing.:D ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Take Heed of the Touch Pad Comments by Other Reviewers
Please do not miss the superb review provided by JD Woody, it provides a much better description and is considerably more useful than HP's description of its own product.

Also take special heed to all of the complaints by other reviewers about the touch pad feature.Unfortunately I chose to ignore them - everyone who isn't familiar with touch pads complains about them, it seems. I prefer a touch pad to a mouse any day, and the touch pad was the main reason I purchased this item, and was I ever disappointed - it's totally worthless. As a matter of fact it's intrusive, as it frequently opens/closes applications unintentionally when I brush by it with my thumb.I wish it could be disabled, but it can only be toggled between cursor mode and the NavPoint mode, which is even worse.I have had to settle for desensitizing the cursor & NavPoint settings as much as the software will permit and then handling the unit like it is a firearm.

I almost sent the unit back until I discovered that it has a handwriting recognition feature that actually works - the Block Recognizer. The others that are included aren't too shabby either, but the Block Recognizer manages to recognize my horrible handwriting 98% of the time.

Because of the Block Recognizer and the many other useful features the iPAQ 4705 provides, I've decided to keep the unit.

Hopefully HP will provide a software update for disabling the touch pad in the near future.Or dare I wish for an update to make the touch pad actually useful.

4-0 out of 5 stars hz4700 gets da thumbs up from me
i bought the ipaq in april and i am totally satisfied (first 1), although there r jus 2 minor issues it might only be with mine for the first 1 which is the annoying screen alignment!!!!!!!!!!! takes forever sometimes i have to reset the ipaq and to realign --".and the other thing is that the new os is coming out for the ipaq 5.0 or somtin (im new wit da os stuff for ppc)its seams a whole lot better but dont stress you hp or dell users hp and dell are both going to sell the new os but only for selected ppcs the hp hx4700 is one so dont freak out...

by the way can any one tell me if i can use the 5gig cards???

4-0 out of 5 stars Great, except...
Overall, I'm very pleased with it, but there is a problem.

HP just published an update on their web site, that limits the volume applied to the internal speaker. Apparently, the internal amplifier is too powerful for the speaker, and without artificially limiting the audio level, the speaker will be damaged.

Mine failed this way, and now it will be two weeks being repaired by HP, assuming that they don't decide to charge me a minimum fee of $85, and there's also the shipping.

So, my nice Ipaq will be out of service for a while.
And I was thinking about having that ram upgrade installed, which would have left me with no warantee..

5-0 out of 5 stars Just a perfect PDA!
This is my fifth Pocket PC atfer migrating from the honorable palm line.I must confess that Ipaq hx4705 has all I have be waiting for in a compact pc. Just name but a few,,,security, speed, view, touch pad and size. The backup is so great that with my ipaq off and password protected, it still does the daily backup assuring me that my data will be available no matter what happen. The backup to my Ipaq file storage is one of the thing that make me want to kiss my ipaq.I did a hard reset just to put the backup files to a test.I am proud that the restore process was easy and I got my ipaq back the way it was before the hard reset.HP, the security and backup system in this model is a great step up... The VGA IS EXCELLENT.. If you are in the market for a high end pda, don't hesitate as this is the right pda for you. So far I think it worth every dollars I've invested on it.
I must say I am proud to have invested on this little machine.
Storage is unlimited. I have 2GB CF AND 1GB SD CARDS on my Ipaq. Now I have more than enough room for any thing I can possibly load on it.......Just a Perfect machine and technology.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Machine
I've had my 4705 since December and adore it. It's fast, fits well in my hand and the screen is wonderful. While very nice while using QVGA, I'm still blown away by the VGA quality when using a third party progam to use the full potential of the screen. The only drawback with that is the size of the fonts and some of the icons in that mode. But more and more programs are including larger fonts and icons fortrue VGA use. Overall, I love it, and consider it money well spent. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great consumer-level point-and-shoot digital camera
If you are just an amateur photographer that is either finally switching from analog to digital or just want a decent camera to take on family vacations or school projects, this is a great camera. It is small, lightweight, and does just about anything you could possibly need it to do. It won't take pictures of hummingbirds feeding across a forest bed, but it will take a decent photo of the grand canyon. The quality of the 3x optical zoom is really good, but the picture is sacrificed slightly as you try to artifically enhance it with the digital zoom. The battery life is good enough to take on extended trips from your hotel or on a hike without having to carry around a charger or spare batteries. If you plan on taking lots of high quality large photos, you will need to get a larger memory stick (64 MB will work, 128 MB even better), but the memory stick it comes with will be enough to photograph your child's birthday party as long as you download the photos onto your computer afterwards. At 5.1 MegaPixels, this camera will pick up hairs on a persons head and it will even be able to define a flea in the hair. 5 MP is enough to make clear 8x10 prints. There are 6+ MegaPixel cameras out there, but at the consumer level there is really no point in spending the money on one (7.2 MP won't come in handy unless you are making 15x20 prints or are a student taking pictures through a microscope or a telescope--it is more of a prosumer level) All around, while Sony's camera lenses may not compare with Canon or Olympus, Sony makes up for it with their superior knowledge of how to make a great consumer digital device and turn it into a decent digital camera. It is a great value for the price.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great features in a compact package
There's no doubt about it, the Sony Cybershot DSC-T1 is a great camera. Its small enough to carry with you (it can slip right into one of your pockets), has a nice LCD, boasts amazing 5MP resolution, as well as professional quality 3x optical zoom (not bad for such a tiny unit). At about $500, it is a little expensive, [...]You can print out an 8x10 poster of your photo without having to stretch the image, that's how great 5MP really is. Also, its got tons of features for a non-SLR model that are easy to use for camera beginners; you can't lose with a Sony.

1-0 out of 5 stars In the market for a new camera
Like many other reviewers, I had terrible problems with blurry indoor photos and redeye. Some favorable reviews suggest there are ways to correct this, but I will never know because I picked up the camera one day and the LCD was broken.I can't think of anything I did that caused the break, but it rendered the camera completely unusable since it does not have a viewfinder.Like another reviewer who had the same problem, I found the cost of the repair was more than the cost to replace.Even if the picture quality problems could be resolved, I would never buy another camera without a viewfinder, regardless of how "sexy" the design...

5-0 out of 5 stars a great little camera
DSC-T1 is excellent. all the features of my old bulky DSC-F717. perfect for traveling, compact for all occasions. great price compared to F-717. easy download to computer. some reviews described disappointments. read the operating instructions and practice a little. it's fun. no problems indoors. battery life is fine. turn off when not in use or get a spare and go all day. i bought the soft case too. all around nice shooter.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
I brought the T1 because of the LCD screen size, I love the fact that you can actually see what you are taking a picture of. Good battery life, easy to carry around but that is where the positives stop. The most important things about having a camera, to capture those "Kodak" moments are the picture quality. With the T1 they are poor for a 5 mp camera. Unless you are shooting within 3-5 feet the pictures are very poor quality, you get red eye if you shoot outside of 5 feet and use the zoom. The software that comes with the camera to transfer the photos to your PC is not user friendly. When you have to drill down into multiple folders just so you can transfer them to a program that you can edit from is not what I call user friendly.I have tried to play with the settings and turned on the red eye feature but still have poor quality. Not something you would expect from a so-called high end camera given the price!
I would like to thank some of you other reviewers for giving tips on how to try to correct some of the issues I'm having with the over priced camera...Sony layed an egg with this one! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars It's powerfull and empowering
If you're reading this review you probably want to know if this is the computer for you. That definitely depends more on you than this computer. It's clearly too much money for web surfing and e-mail.If that's your primary use for a computer please, get something else. But if you want to drive lots of applications, especially graphics and video/audio intense applications this is a great choice. Is this the fastest hardware when compared to Intel/AMD options in the same price range? It's in the ballpark with the fastest but it certainly is not the fastest in every possible test - although graphics apps do especially good on the PowerPC processors.

Just as with cars, however, horsepower is not everything. Maxed out PCs remind me of American muscle cars (when I'm being generous).Sure you can put a massive engine in them but they're kind of crude and certainly not enjoyable to drive every day.Macs are a lot more like a Porsche 911 - extremely powerful but not necessarily the most powerful. But when you look at all the components needed to make a great vehicle it's hard to beat.OS X on this 2.7 is the same way - Apple has really put together a well refined vehicle that's a pleasure to drive hard all day long.

But is it the right computer for you?Hey, you've got to work with whatever you've got, Mac or PC, old or new.I'm fortunate that my company provides me with a high end PC and a 2.5 GHz G5. I wouldn't pay squat for the PC.The G5 - I've just bought the 2.7 GHz for my home workstation.

You can get the details and specs elsewhere - I'm here to tell you that if you have drive you're computer hard all day long you'll be glad it's one of these high end Macs.If you get the hopped up PC you'll still get to Cleveland - maybe a few seconds faster, maybe a few seconds slower - but you're not going to enjoy the trip nearly as much as I do.

5-0 out of 5 stars Desktop supercomputer now even faster
Apple is, quite simply, the best and most innovative computer manufacturer. Consumer Reports recently identified Apple computers as the most reliable computers currently available and a PC magazine user survey reached the same conclusion. Also PC magazine has picked a Macintosh G5 as the best multi-purpose desktop computer. Now Apple has this even more powerful Macintosh G5 computer with dual 2.7 GHz processors.

Yes, most people use Windows-based PCs, but do you want to be just another member of the PC herd -- with all of the problems and frustrations (including frequent crashes and virus attacks) presented by Windows-based PCs -- or are you looking for a computer which is user friendly, seldom crashes, and is virtually impervious to virus attacks? If these virtues are more important to you than being one of the crowd, please seriously consider buying an Apple computer. The Power Mac G5 is Apple's top-of-the-line computer series and this is the most powerful G5 ever -- essentially a desktop supercomputer. Like all Power Mac G5s this computer is more than twice as fast as a Pentium 4 with the same clock speed and has dual 64-bit processors. All computers will have 64-bit processors some day but very few PCs, except for Mac G5s, have them at this time. If you're looking for a super fast, versatile, easy to use computer (and want to stop worrying abut virus attacks) and are willing to try something off the beaten path, you'll love this new more powerful Power Mac G5. If you want the virtues of Apple computers and G5 power at a lower price consider the Power Mac G5s with dual 2.3 GHz or dual 2.0 GHz processors or the new G5 iMacs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Apple Power Mac Dual 2.7GHz G5
This is the new version of the Power Mac G5. I currently own the G5 with the dual 2.5GHz in it but now I'm willing to upgrade. They have four versions of this Power Mac right now: Single 1.8GHz, Dual 2.0GHz, Dual 2.3GHz, and Dual 2.7GHz. They have lowered the prices too which is nice. For some reason I like to go with the most expensive because if you think about it in the long run I would rather spend money on a exceptional computer with technology not even seen on most computers today and have it for 10 years. AMD and Intel are now making dual core processors but they can't stand up to the G5's dual processor capability. No Windows desktop can even have 8GB of RAM either. Most Windows PCs I see today have up to 4-5GB of RAM. This one had 512MB RAM which I would upgrade to atleast 2GB. 250 GB Hard Drive is good but I would recommend getting a 500GB or 800GB hard drive so you'll know you will always have room to store things. It has DVD+/-RW drive upgraded from the DVD-R drive from the previous model. This is better because now the drive can be rewritable. I love the design of the G5 and I can't wait what Apple will do with the G6 or their next power house PC. It comes with Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger which is brand new to the market. It's better than the 10.3 no doubt. I haven't upgraded to it the 10.4 yet but I am soon since I am getting this G5. Everything from this model I have heard about is awesome and I can't wait until I pick mine up.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Power Mac Yet
This is by far the best power mac yet introduced. wow, what speed. but where is the promised 3GHz???? where is the PCIe? maybe next time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not A 3Ghz but thanks for the heads up Amazon
I should probably wait until Apple announces this new bad boy to write a real review. I'm sure it will be great though.

Cheers. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Useful PDA Combo, Highly Recommended, a Few Quirks
Have used the Ique 3600 for 9 months or so now, I find it to be an extremely powerful and synergistic combination, and would recommend it to those with PDA experience and/or patience.A PDA is a natural mate with a GPS and Garmin has done a pretty good job in this combination.I do understand the frustration of some of the reviews posted here though, as there are a few quirks which can make the initial experience less than smooth. But if you hang in there to get past the learning curve of futzing with the maps during 3 or 4 downloads and figuring out how to work with the address book and the 'find locations' feature, you will then have a powerful ally in your daily life's travels and travails and will not part with it for a minute.

Recommendations: get as big an SD card as you can, 1Gb or more, and put the whole dang US map on it and forget about tweaking it for every trip, since the download process is pretty painful. Also, leave it in the charger every night, as it needs a charge pretty much once a day.Gotchas: popping it into the car holder will occasionally glitch it due to static on the connectors, requiring a reset.Try to touch the connectors of the car and the PDA while it is still off before popping it in in order to discharge the static.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Product! One of my best purchases, ever!
I have wasted money on a lot of things that prove to be only half as good as they appeared to be. This product definitely exceeded my high expectations. I travel a lot, and many times, to places that I have never been before. This product was a life saver because it gets me to where I need to go every time, with only a few minor errors (i.e. newer streets not available, address slightly off on smaller side streets). However, one should not expect that it can be perfect every time, even though it does get it right more than I expected.

I have been using Palm OS PDA's for several years now, so I was really excited when a friend told me about this. The PDA on the Garmin iQue 3600 is probably equivalent to a higher-end Palm-brand PDA (i.e. Tungsten) and it has worked out great for me since I took it out of the box.

Please, keep in mind that this item is a PDA with a really good GPS navigation system. If you want a strict navigation system, Garmin makes a few products that are better for that purpose.

The best features include:
1. Integration of address book and GPS allows to quickly route to an existing address book entry or set up entries as waypoints for even quicker access.

2. Tremendous list of stores, restaurants, etc. allows you to look up items near your current location, near your destination or even near a point that you choose on the map.

3. It recalculates! If you miss your turn or make a wrong turn, it will automatically recalculate your trip based on your new location and make sure you still get to your destination.

4. It is extremely mobile. It does everything a PDA needs to do and you can use it as a handheld GPS device while you are walking down the street. This is great in larger cities when you cannot always park in front of the building you need to go and you need to walk from a parking garage, or if you road in a taxi or took the subway/metro.

The worst features/issues include:
1. The poor battery life. I can understand the battery being drained quickly when the GPS is on, but when I am updating my contacts or inputting appointments it should not burn out the battery so quickly. Be sure you have access to a charger if you think you will need to use it a lot during the day. However, I have not had any problems with the battery draining significantly when I don't charge it for several days and it is not being used.

2. The maps cannot be modified (or at least, I have not figure out how to do it). This is not a serious problem, but there was one instance where there was a new road near my destination that would have significantly reduced my travel time. The iQue didn't know the road was there and I could not add it for future trips. I just had to remember to ignore the last part of the directions and the iQue made it look like I was driving "off road" during that point of my trip.

3. It takes a little while to upload new detailed maps. It never took up to 1.5 hours as one other review mentioned, but it is not a quick process. The few times that I did it, it took about 25 minutes for the software to prepare the maps and perform the hotsync. However, you should only need to do this every once in a while, unless you constantly need to change maps or you don't have enough memory to store all of the maps that you want.

Regardless of any slight imperfections (as most products have), I plan to buy this product for my wife and for my mother. That just shows how much it has been a benefit to me and how much I can trust it.

3-0 out of 5 stars good product, but needs improvement
I bought it as Christmas gift for my gf, and she loves it. It generally works fine, but with a few problems. Other reviews talked about most of the good things about it, and I agreed. So here I will only talk about the few flaws. Overall, it's a usefull tool; but don't rely on it too much and it's always wise to still keep a copy of paper map in your car.

The system sometime couldn't find the signal, but a soft reset will solve the problem. I once waited for 20 minutes and it still couldn't find the satellite signal, but after a reset, it founded the signal within one or two minutes.

I couldn't have it figure out the fastest way. Even though I selected that option, it always gives a seemingly to be shortest way. I KNOW these are slower than some alternatives. It just doesn't know about traffic information.

Voice prompt sometimes inaccurate. When she says keep left, you may be turning left or even turning right. The maps is right most of the time, though. It's always a good idea to have somebody sitting in the passenger seat to double check with the map, or look at the screen yourself. The big screen makes it relatively easy if you position it well.

The "Find" function works some time, but not all the time. Sometime it puts stores in wrong categories. For example, I couldn't finda Stop&Shop store in "grocery shopping" but it's in some where else. The weird thing is that I was able to find another Stop&Shop store in grocery shopping category.

The maps are ok, but I couldn't find a pretty large mall in South Boston, even though the mall has been there for more than 3 years. The whole area in the map is just dark. btw, I've loaded the detailed map of the whole New England.

One great thing about the iQue is the mp3 player. However, it's pretty hard to organize the songs. We have a 1G SD card in it, about 200MB maps and 500MB mp3. There's no playlist function in the palm, and all songs appear in the same directory. I hope they will provide a firmware upgrade that support sub-directories.

When playing mp3, we once experience terrible high volume sounds. After turning down the volume, the problem was gone. The same song plays great on my PC. I guess it's probably the problem of the palm audio output, too easy to get saturated.

The palm cannot remember where you were when palying mp3. Everytime it starts from the very first song when turned on. If you don't want to listen to the first few songs for many times, don't turn it off.

The speaker of the car kit is terrible. Fortunately I have a cassette through which I can play the palm sound output using the car audio system. Now the car kit speaker is just a cumbersome junk which cannot be removed because it's made into the car charger. The friction mount works great, though.

5-0 out of 5 stars Garmin iQue 3600 problems addressed
I bought Garmin 3600 and had problems with it.I finally returned and received a newer Garmin 3600.The problems I had were:
1. Car moves out of map and map must be moved; This problem does not exist in my replacement Garmin.
2. Batter live short:A little better on the replacement.
3. Hang-up and needs reset!About trashed the old one, but the new one I received does not have this problem.
4. Slow map loading:A lot faster on the replacement.

I am a Realtor, and this is one of the best investments I have made. They could give better instructions on using the GPS functions. They leave a lot to the trial & error method.I am still trying to figure out all the bells and whistles that come with it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Useful product - once you figure it out
For the first week I wanted to throw this thing under the wheels of my car as it made me feel stupid 'cause I couldn't figure out how to make it do what I wanted it to do. I perservered and now I love it.Just hang in there, keep messing with it and eventually you will get it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Thumbs up for this great notebook
I recently bought this notebook and its lived up to all my expectations. One of the key factors in a sony note book is for sure its display. The 13 " XBRITE display is class apart and allows you to enjoy even movies, websites with flash or makes even a plain vanilla word/excel document look better compared to other displays.

The notebook is also really light and its "THE" choice for road warriors. The battery too is really powerful and allows you to compute for say >3 hours without a problem.

This notebook lacks a DVD writer which really depends on if you are looking for it. Atleast in my case its rare that I would need to burn DVD`s. Also, Notebook is not great for installed software for e.g it comes with XP Home and Trial versions of Office etc. The key thing these do not affect your working in a very big way.

If you are looking for a great notebook then Vaio is defintely the one!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Notebook for Travel
I needed a light and reliable notebook for travel and research and this has filled the bill admirably. It withstood plenty of knocking around, and did the tasks I required (word processing, accessing net with ethernet and wireless connections, downloading and organizing digital photos)quickly and effectively. Did have to initially set it up as described in first review. Don't know why people are complaining about the fan noise, I worked in a quiet library and it was never a problem.

2-0 out of 5 stars don't buy this nootbook
I read the comment about the fan noise this computer has, but I didn't care and bought this computer anyway. I just got this laptop today and the first thing I noticed is how ridiculously loud the fan is. I have a Dell laptop, but I can't hear the fan on my Dell's even when I press my ear against it. I called Sony's Service Center, they told me that alot of customers have called them complaining about the fan problem and a investigation is underway, but I am so pissed off right now because this product has a blatantly defective fan and Sony has failed to pull it out of the market.
Honestly, the fan makes so MUCH noise that this computer is not even worth buying.

4-0 out of 5 stars Awsome Notebook
I got this notebook (one generation back - the S260) and it's great! The widescreen is absolutely beautiful and it's light, powerful and has a good battery life. The only issues I have with it are that it does not have a DVD burner and it lacks (at least the s260 model) bluetooth. Also there's no keyboard light like the IBM thinkpads have. Other then that, it has everything I ever wanted in a notebook! I highly recommend this product. Also, thier support is GREAT. 24/7 support and onsite assistance. I've already used thier support once, and I was truly impressed (and it takes a lot to impress me).

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome
First, I have to say that I have a customized S-Series notebook from Sonystyle.com and not this particular configuration. It's more or less similar, though. I have more RAM, a DVD Burner and Bluetooth. My wife bought one last month after a year of laptop envy and is equally pleased with her configuration. Point: the core components here are solid.

I have personally never owned a laptop that was consistently as reliable as this one. Yes, there is fan noise but it's nowhere near as loud as some reviews make it out to be. To answer another reviewer: there are 2 USB ports and 1 Firewire port. I benchmarked all the hardware using Norton Utilities (yeah, yeah) and everything but the speed of my DVD Burner came up with excellent ratings.

The Xbrite monitor technology is great for using this laptop under high sunlight conditions outside. I also use it for Photoshop and feel that, despite its size, the 13" screen is ideal compared to the pixilated, grainy appearance of most other LCDs. My only major complaint about this laptop is that it does not have a DVI output for connecting it to something like an Apple Cinema Display. It does, however, have a standard RGB monitor output that works fine.

The chassis is light and very sexy. Along with the new Sony T Series latops (midget versions of the S series) I can honestly say there is no better slim notebook for Windows users. I also own a 12" Apple Powerbook G4 that I use for travel and, despite its reputation for being the sexiest of the ultra-lights, I still much prefer my Sony S.

The Intel 2200 Wireless Lan is really great for using wi-fi hotspots. A friend has a lower end Intel Wireless LAN and can rarely even detect hotspots that my S-series simply connects to automatically.

If you mainly want a light computer for wireless internet, iPoding, running business apps and editing digital photos, the canned configuration offered by Amazon.com will do fine. If you want to really trick out the guts of one of these, go to Sonystyle.com.

One word of advice I can offer to anyone interested in any version of this laptop is: buy the extended life battery (sold separately.) It's worth every penny. My G4 goes through two whole battery cycles in less time than it takes my extended life Sony battery to run down once. It's like the energizer bunny on steroids. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars This machine will just DIE on you...
Like all the other reviewers, I was happy with my Zire 31 for the first four months of owning it...then one day it just did not turn on.I did a soft reset...nothing.Hard reset...came on for a moment, then again it DIED.Now it is worthless, I got 120 days of use.Warantee is for 90 days.Don't waste your money.

1-0 out of 5 stars A Horrible Symbol of Corporate America
What a piece of garbage. It works great, but look out, because this product is a heartbreaker.I'm probably the 20th person on Amazon that has had this issue:One day I shut off this device, and it no longer works correctly. No, that's probably the understatement of the century: IT DOESN'T EVEN TURN ON ANYMORE.

So let me ask you, PalmOne:Do your customers mean nothing to you?

Does your very source of revenue deserve to be treated like garbage?

I am awaiting tech support for this issue.I am extremely angry at PalmOne.How is this any different from stealing $150 dollars from my wallet?I work hard for my money, you corporate sleazebags.Don't buy this handheld.

5-0 out of 5 stars Stylish and Simple, a Classic
This is my first PDA, and I chose it over the Tungsten E which cost a third more in price (Tungsten E2 costs 2X the price... out of my budget).
The contoured white plastic back looks great, like a prop from Star Wars, instead of the plated metallic of the T|E. The 160x160 screen is also 1/4 of the T|E's resolution, but sufficient for most apps, even Palm Reader. The MP3 player (Real Player) can play any mp3 files on a card (no DRM hassles), highs and mids sound great but the bass is a bit clipped (like most low-cost flash MP3 players incl. iPod shuffle). It has a strong audio amplifier, so there is some background hiss at low volumes... but you can remove the noise with any inline volume control (resistor) equipped headphones, turned to minimum.
My choice between T|E and Zire 31 is the based on photo viewing need (or doing w/o it)... the T|E with 4X the resolution and much better color (a real TFT) makes it more useful.... but since it has a weak CPU, it cannot play full res video on its excellent display. What a waste, so I compromise a bit and got the Zire for only its classic PalmOS functions. I love the efficient user interface, as well as the Zire's simple design.
Looking forward to the Zire 41 or 51 as my 2nd, next PDA.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great PDA for starters - I love it!
I bought this product a month ago, and am still very happy with it. It is my first PDA and it meets all my requirements: keeping track of my timetables and appointments at school and social life. The Graffiti writing is very easy to learn, and the interface is very user friendly. A great amount of free software is available for this PDA, but gaming, hovever, is a disaster on this PDA. I get the idea that a lot of games designed for PalmOS were intended to be played on PDA's offering a lot of buttons, like some previous palms. Only very simple, but nonetheless cool games can be played on the Zire 31.
To conclude, if you're a first time PDA user, this one is defenitely for you. But don't expect it to be a gameboy or something.
Don't hesitate to email me if you have any questions or suggestions.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good if you never have to use it outside.
I liked my Zire 31 until I tried to use it outside.Outdoor light totally washes out the screen. My old Cassiopeia may be plain but at least I can use where ever I am.The Zire should be labeled "For Indoor Use Only".This puppy is going back to the store. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

Keep productive on the road,--but don't forget to have fun--with the HP Pavilion ZV6010US, which features a large 15.4-inch display and built-in 54g wireless connectivity. The dual layer DVD-/+RW drive makes it easy to burn presentations to disc as well as back up critical files to double-layer DVD discs (with 8.5 GB of storage). It's also handy for watching movies as you fly the friendly skies to your next appointment. This notebook also features a spacious 100 GB hard drive, 512 MB of installed RAM, 1.6 GHz Intel Pentium M processor, multi-format memory card reader, and the memory efficient, fast AMD Athlon 64 3500+ processor.

The Basics

  • Hard Drive: The 100 GB hard drive (4200 RPM) is above average in size, and is befitting of such an entertainment-centric laptop. You'll be able to store a hefty digital audio library.
  • Processor: AMD's Athlon 64 3500+ processor is built for tomorrow's 64-bit applications, which will require a processor with significant power. This 2.2 GHz processor offers a system bus with speeds up to a blazing 2200 MHz and 512 KB L2 cache. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance.) It includes such AMD features as HyperTransport Technology (which increases the communication between integrated circuits) and Cool'n'Quiet Technology that conserves power while also keeping the PC nicely quiet.
  • Memory: The 512 MB of built-in memory (2 x 256 MB, DDR SDRAM, 266 MHz) is a good start for power users. It has two memory slots in total, with a maximum memory expansion up to 2 GB (2 x 1024 MB).
  • CD/DVD Drive: Offering the latest in DVD writing technology, the ZV6010US multiformat DVD/CD drive is compatible with both DVD+ and DVD- disc formats as well as dual-layer DVD+R discs, which can store up to 8.5 GB of data.
  • Keyboard & Mouse: This notebook has a 101-key keyboard and a touchpad with on/off button and dedicated vertical/horizontal Scroll Up/Down pad.
Screen, Graphcs and Sound
The high-definition 15.4-inch WXGA BrightView widescreen display--with 1280 x 800-pixel resolution--has 18 percent more screen information than a 15-inch XGA, providing visibility of two applications side by side for greater productivity and multi-tasking. The BrightView feature provides a 20 percent brighter screen for better definition and 33 percent wider viewing angle for more accurate, off-center viewing when sharing files files. Video and graphics are powered by the ATI Radeon Xpress 200M, which provides 128 MB of dedicated video memory. It also has HP Premium audio and internal stereo speakers.

Connectivity and Expansion Slots
The ZV6010US has an integrated 54g wireless LAN that's fully compatible with 802.11b/g wireless networks. The 125 HSM/SpeedBooster support will enable it to be ready for tomorrow's 125 Mbps wireless LANs. You get a good offering of connectivity options, including super-fast USB 2.0 and Firewire:

  • 4 USB 2.0 ports for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players
  • 1 FireWire (also known as IEEE 1394 or i.Link) port for connecting digital video camcorders and other peripherals
  • 1 VGA monitor port
  • 1 S-Video out
  • 1 IR (infrared) port
  • 1 Expansion Port 2 connector
  • 1 PCMCIA (or PC Card) slot (Type I/II, 32-bit)
  • 6-in-1 memory card reader (compatible with Secure Digital, MultiMedia, Memory Stick, Memory Stick Pro, SmartMedia, and XD Picture Cards)
  • 1 headphone jack and 1 microphone jack
It also has an integrated 56K modem (V.90) and an RJ-45 LAN network port (for a 10/100 Ethernet connection to networks and DSL/cable modems).

Preloaded System and Software
This system comes with the Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2 operating system with Advanced Security Technologies, which helps to reduce unwanted downloads and pop-ups while surfing the Web. It also comes preloaded with Microsoft Works (for working with word processing and spreadsheet documents), Norton Internet Security 2005 (with 60 days of complimentary updates), Microsoft Money 2005, Sonic RecordNow, Apple iTunes, Adobe Photoshop Album Starter Edition, Intervideo WinDVD, Intervideo Home Theater, MuVee Autoproducer, and MSN Encarta Plus.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you know what you're doing, you'll love it
I've heard a lot of people say that this really isn't needed. Most of these people intend to use it for their PSP.This is not the only use for this card.If you have a Sony camera that supports high speed shooting, this card is a must. With that said, if you own a PSP, and you know what you're doing, this card is a must as well.Reason is, the slower Memory Stick Pro Duo, has a write speed at 15Mbps.The high speed card clocks in at about 80 Mbps.Yeah.Grab your USB 2.0 / Firewire Card reader for this one, it makes a HUGE difference.

The average user, however, will not care. They're probably using the 5 pin USB cable to transfer files, which comes in at about 10 Mbps. There is NO point in buying this card if this is the case for you.On the other hand, if you're like me, and crave the capacity of 1 gb for your psp, odds are you'll be using all 1000 mb of it.You have to go high speed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Fast
This stick is fantastic for high resolution photos and is lightning quick. Do you need the extra speed the MSX-M1GN gives you? Maybe, maybe not. But at least you have it when and if you need the feature. Highly recommend it for the money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fast, reliable
Sony makes two 1GB Memory Stick PRO Duo cards. The one on this page is MSX-M1GN and it's labeled "High Speed," meaning it reads and writes using parallel connectors. The Sony PSP, among other Sony gadgets, supports this high-speed access technology, so you can use this card in the PSP.

But you don't really need the extra high speed.Instead, you can save money by buying the other Sony 1GB card, model MSX-M1GS (notice difference in the last letter), which is a "non-high speed" 1GB Memory Stick Duo.Both cards support MagicGate, Sony's digital rights management technology.(Sony's Connect online music store requires a MagicGate-compatible storage card.)

Let me emphasize my previous point: you don't need the "high speed" Memory Stick Duo, the regular Memory Stick Duo is fast enough for games, movies and music on the PSP.Paying extra for this "high speed" version (~$40 over the "S" version) if you only use it in the PSP is a waste of money since the PSP doesn't really take advantage of the parallel access technology -- i.e., it plays cool with the technology, but doesn't employ it.On the other hand, if you have one of Sony's latest digital cameras that support high-speed continue shooting, you may want to get this.

This is a fast, reliable flash memory card that will likely last a long time.I've never had any problems with Sony's flash storage cards.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good But Not Great
You can find a better deal with a 1.0GB Memory Stick Duo with either SanDisk or Lexar. Sony's memory sticks are very expensive against the competitors but they work best with the Sony products. I bought this for my Sony PlayStation Portable so I could store music, games, pictures, and music. One thing I learned is that you shouldn't get a high-capacity memory stick! One thing is that if you want to watch movies you have to convert your files to MPEG-4 which is so much more work! Another thing is with your CD's and stuff like that you have to convert them only to MP3 and ATRAC3 format. For pictures it has to be JPEG only which is another hassle. I have a card reader on my computer and guess what...it doesn't support Memory Stick Duo! It only supports MS and MS PRO. I've heard you have to buy a Sony computer to have a card reader with Memory Stick Duo capability. I am very disappointed with Sony with their new UMD and Memory Stick Duo. They should have added 1.0GB internal built-in memory so you can start downloading all those things instantly. The PSP should have also included a Mini-B USB Connector too because it's so cheap! I wouldn't recommend getting this amount of memory but if you store a lot of things and you have the patience to convert (you might need software for some of them) then this is a good thing for you. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Takes great pictures
First of all, I am not a serious camera buff. The S70 is my first digital camera because I wanted to wait until the technology was proven before I jumped in. That said, the S70 has proven to be a great camera that takes great pictures.

The only problem I have noticed is that the autofocus has a hard time resolving anything without sharp edges. When I was at the Smithsonian a couple of weeks ago taking pictures of some impresssionist paintings they gave the autofocus headaches.

My bud is a camera freak. He just bought a $5000 12 MP Nikon to add to his collection of high dollar Nikons. I would ask him what such and such function does and, after explaining it to me, he would be surprised that a pocket camera would offer that feature. For example, for an important picture that might not be able to be shot twice, it has settings that will tap out three photos-one regularly exposed, one underexposed, and one overexposed.

He was one to snub his nose at small point and shoot cameras but, being a cameraphile, he cant resist playing around with mine when thats all there is. Over the past few weeks of playing around with it the S70 has earned his respect. He was impressed enough with enough that he recommended it to another acquaintance that asked him for his opinon.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best camera we've ever owned
I've been watching the canon S series since the S20, so when our film camera (a Canon) died after 10 years, I just bought the S70. This is the single best camera we've ever owned.

Where do I begin? 7 megapixels means even a partial frame prints without pixelation. I don't know what purple fringing is, we don't see any pruple fringes in our photos.

We bought a 512 MB card, which has a capacity of 160 photos at the highest resolution, minimum-compression JPEG setting. The quality is truly outstanding.

Sure, I wish the shutter lag was shorter, but it's as good as any digital camera I've tried. Full recharge of the battery takes less than two hours, and the battery lasts for over 100 shots (I haven't needed any more than that.)

Did I say we love this camera?

We do photo cards every Christmas. This year, I bought the camera in November, and the first weekend we owned it, I took an amazing photo of our daugher. Even though the best part of the photo just occupied 25% of the frame, it looked great after cropping. Within 30 minutes, I'd uploaded the photo to Ophoto, and two days later we received the highest quality photo cards we've ever seen.

Did I mention that I love this camera?

Hint: Get to know all the photo modes on the mail dial. They give you an amazing range of control over your images.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great resolution, with tons of features
There's no doubt about it, the S70 is a great camera. Its small enough to carry with you (though a little too big for pockets), has a nice LCD and boasts amazing 7.1MP resolution. You can print out an 11x14 poster of your photo without having to stretch the image, that's how great 7.1MP really is. Also, its got tons of features for a non-SLR model that are easy to use for camera beginners.

4-0 out of 5 stars S70 accessories: Which ones to get, which ones to avoid
After getting my S70, I splurged on a few accessories. Here is a review on how well they work with the S70.

- CF card, at least 1GB in size:This is a no-brainer must have.Get a high speed one (but note that Lexar's "Write Acceleration" is not supported on Canon cameras).

- Canon wide angle lens, and the required lens adaptor:Not worth it.The lens doesn't sit very stably on the camera (I expected a more solid feel when using genuine Canon accessories on a Canon camera), and the pictures taken are somewhat distorted.

- Wireless controller:If you have a decent tripod (any brand will do, the S70 accepts a regular tripod screw) and want to be in the pictures you take without resorting to Photoshop, the remote control is a nice thing to have. But don't expect too much, the zooming control on the remote is pretty much a joke.

- Portable dye sublimation printer:These are marvelous and produce absolutely real-looking (and waterproof too) 4x6 prints that are a world apart from anything inkjet printers can do.The obvious downsides are 1. paper and color cartridge kits are expensive and 2. 4x6 is the maximum print size.Other than that, these printers are great fun.And they are so small these days, you can take one on a trip and print your own postcards to send home.Canon models are: CP-220, CP-400, CP-330, CP-600 (the later two models include a rechargeable battery, so you don't even need a power source for printing).Another choice is the Sony DPP-FP30, which is almost as small and has slightly better colors.

4-0 out of 5 stars A very good compromise between compactness and functionality
In the 7-megapixel class alone, Canon makes at least 3 current consumer models: the G6 (w/ 4X zoom), the S70 (w/ 3.6X zoom), and SD500 (the new "Elph", w/ 3X zoom). These are priced similarly, within $100 of difference.(Incidentally, here's a tidbit about the zooming capabilities - the closest telephoto zoom of the "3.6X" on the S70 is like a 3X zoom on most other cameras. The extra ".6" is on the wide angle end, which is rather unique and is nice for taking in vast sceneries.)

My previous digital camera (a Sony Cyber-Shot with 3 megapixels and 3X zoom) was one of the ultra compacts and although I loved the portability and was content with the lower pixel count, I was dissatisfied with the graininess and contrast of the pictures (despite much effort to adjust to lighting situations within the limited interface) and ultimately I put the blame on the quality of the optics.

For selecting my new camera, the G6 receives rave reviews almost everywhere I looked, but I wasn't willing to jump to such a large camera (when I am out and taking pictures it's for fun, not for professional use - carrying a big hunk of a camera inteferes with enjoying the trip). The SD500 is one of Canon's Elph series cameras with an amazingly diminutive size, but previous experience makes me doubtful of the ability of another ultra compact. And even though reviews do say the SD500 takes good quality pictures, one thing's for sure - it has fewer controls than I'd like. The S70 happily sits half way between those two, is reasonably compact, and has just enough user controllability that I thought I needed. Most importantly of all, the S70 seems to have just enough size to house the quality optics necessary for taking great pictures. My old camera used to take perfectly respectable outdoors photos, but in any indoors lighting condition it took either grainy pictures with bad contrast, or extremely over exposed pictures if I enable the flash. Not so with this one.Every snap shot so far has been crisp and vivid, with good contrast and beautiful flesh tones. The resolution at 7MP is more than necessary for any practical inkjet-printing-at-home purpose, but on the other hand it allows for quite a bit of freedom for cropping if you need to re-frame a shot to get the best composition.

Also worth mentioning, a slightly gimmicky but very nifty function is that this camera facilitates taking multiple pictures that can be seamlessly "stitched" together (by showing a portion of the previous picture when you take the next shot). This allows great possibilities of making VR files where the viewer can navigate the surroundings 360 degrees.I am toying with the idea of producing a few "virtual" house walk-throughs for a friend's webpage, who's a real estate agent.

Now, what I don't like about the S70 is that the mechanical motors for the moving parts operate way too loudly. You can go to CNET to see a video clip of the zoom lens coming out and hear what I mean.Otherwise, just a few minor quibbles on the interface which is arranged not quite as conveniently as I'd like.No complaints whatsoever for the picture quality. The S70 is, definitely, one of the finest cameras of its class.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best camera out there
Hello, I bought my Sony HDR-FX1 about a month ago from amazon.com and let me just say that this camera is amazing. The resolution, when on a computer is 1920x1080. That right there is enough to sell the camera! Its great for me because i work with CG and CMI, the higher the resolution, the more accurate you can be. This is also great for blue/greenscreening as the high resolution, and the amazing color. There are several different modes to shoot in (all are customizable) you will mostly want to make sure you shoot in Cinemaframe30 or Cinemaframe24 because it will look just like film. You can also adjust how much color is allowed in, standard it is at "0" but you can up the color so much that its more vibrant then most movies. The new willy wonka movie has broad, powerful colors and this camera can easily achieve that. I would talk more about this camera but im out of time (great DOF). So dont get stuck in the Canon Xl2 fad where you pay 3,000 more dollars for a crappier camera.

5-0 out of 5 stars It IS true WideScreen!
I feel the need to correct the reviewer below because he states that this camcorder does not record in true widescreen and that mini-DV CAN record in true 16:9. Well the latter is sometimes true with high-end cameras but not the consumer selection. The latter almost always use digital cropping to achieve 16:9 and that loses you resolution. Here's a review quote about the HDR-FX1 (and the reviewer is referring to non amateur units in the first sentence):

'Most camcorders shoot in 16:9 mode using anamorphic processing of the imager output; that is, vertical compression of the 4:3 image. The FX1 is the first consumer camcorder with 3 CCD imagers that have a physical 16:9 aspect ratio. In other words, the image is captured natively in 16:9 aspect ratio (without black bands) - this explains why the LCD display is also 16:9.'

As I own this camera and I'm very pleased with it and as it can ONLY be used in HD mode in true 16:9 I felt the need to speak up.

In conclusion: worth every cent!

5-0 out of 5 stars amazing editing software IS out for this camera
Every great camera needs great editing software. I am sure most people already know, but ALL of Apple's editing programs support the HDV format of this camera natively, WITHOUT the need to purchase any additional video cards.

This is true for Apple's Final Cut Pro HD, Final Cut Express HD and even for iMovie HD!

High definition video from this camera can be edited even on an iBook with the new iMovie HD right out of the box. This is what I call truely amazing!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best prosumer camcorder yet, but not for true professionals.
Addendum 3/30:To correct the guy correcting me 2 reviews above. In regular mini-dv mode with widescreen, there is definately a wider picture.Focus on one item and switch modes, you will see the picture get wider.HD mode is anamorphic 4:3 - stretched to fit 16x9, but keeps the aspect ratio so everything doesn't look stretched. I've run tests and know what I am saying. Do you?

Recently shot my Uncle's wedding in Widescreen, and played the video back on his widescreen tv. The aspect ratio of the images are accurate and not stretched.Yes, this shoots in widescreen, but not in hi-def at the same time.

Original review:
My first "prosumer" camcorder I ever owned and I love it. The color reproduction is phenominal and has great features.A few caveats may scare away people looking for something more, but this is more of a VERY HIGH END consumer item. Not for the novice, but someone with more shooting talent than the average person. If you want a TRUE HD professional camera, spend 15+ grand and stop knocking this one.

A bother to me was that regular mini-dv can record in true 16:9 mode. While the HD mode is anamorphic 4:3. (Stretched to fit 16:9) The wideangle lens can fix that for about $500 more.
But if you are transferring to regular DVD's, you can still shoot mini DV widescreen because DVD doesn't record in HD.

So, unless you are transferring to HD DVD, like blu-ray, you have the BEST consumer/prosumer widescreen camcorder available.
Rated at about 3lux, low light doesn't harm this baby much. I find the accessories can be pricey too, but that is the cost you pay when you go prosumer.Everything else is for beginners and amatures.

Tip: Get a long life battery.Sony 970 is recommended for longest life, but the 960 served me well for a days shooting/standby with plenty time left over. Get the light too!

Did I mention women love men with big camcorders? {:-p

4-0 out of 5 stars It may not be the best camera ever but it still rocks!!
I am a student filmmaker and I just bought this camera from sonystyle.com. Its a great consumer camcorder. It does not offer true HD picture quality but it does offer true HD resolution. If you want a HD camera that rivals film cameras expect to spend 50 to 100 thousand dollars.
The best thing about the camera is its resolution and true 16:9 aspect ratio. If you hate the 16:9 squeeze mode on other camcorders this is the camcorder for you. some people are disappointed about the camcorder lacking a progressive scan mode, 720p. its debated if 720p is true HD. the HDR-FX1 shoots 1080i which is true HD resolution. If 1080i shot progressive scan it would go outside the bandwidth limit. So if you plan to transfer it to film one should get software with de-interlacing capabilities.
Over all the minor flaws will piss off professionals, but they have to realize at the moment true HD is only 1080i not 1080p. The lack of XLR inputs will also hurt the camcorder but there are ways around that to. One big worry is the amount of compression that occurs while shoot HDV on a MiniDV tape. From what I have experience the compression is not a major factor to worry about yet until I do more testing. Over all this is a superior camcorder compared to regular DV camcorders. 24p is not the only thing that give the film look. Aspect ratio and detail are very important as well. The resolution and detail is far superior to any other consumer camcorder. If detail and resolution are top of your list, than this is the camcorder for you, once the editing software comes out for it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars More camera than I know what to do with.
I looked at digital cameras for a few years before selecting the DX7590.Each year the number of pixels in cameras kept going up while the price stayed about the same. The first year I was looking a "good" consumer camera had about 3 megapixels, then 4, and now I was looking at cameras with 5 megapixels. What sold me on this camera was the large lens.Instead of one of those small lenses that most comparable cameras have this one has a real large glass lens manufactured by a real German lens maker.Yes, it has all the features you might want if you're an amateur and then some.I probably will never use the manual override features that allows you to set the shutter time and exposure level, etc., instead of allowing the computer to do it for me.I'm still a little bewildered by the large array of optional settings for different subjects, but I've taken what I think of as superb photos.

I've been taking "snap shots" since my first Brownie camera 50 years ago. They were all nice for family albums, but never anything that I would say could compete with professional photos. But all that has changed. The picture brilliance, clarity, and overall quality that I'm getting outreaches any of my expectations.Last week I was on a camping trip and took a photo of the early morning fog across the lake.Yousers! It looks to me as good as many I've seen in professional photo exhibitions.

One problem I'm having is that the 5 megapixel format is so large that I have to shrink the pictures to put them on a web site. One reason I wanted a digital camera was to be able to put photos on the Internet. So I switched to the optional 1.8 megapixels photos, and it's still too large for my web site.Even at 1.8 megapixel setting the photos are brilliant and clear. It must be the big lens and quality optics.I tried taking some pictures of flowers, and some of them came out blurry.I think I'm having trouble holding it still for the close ups.I guess I need to put it down somewhere or get a mount. It does have a setting for minimum focal length that is a lot closer than many comparable cameras.I got really good close up, and then blurry ones.Between you and me I suspect it's operator error.

I keep forgetting that I can take as many pictures as I want for free and discard any I don't need.I like viewing them full screen on my PC.The "easy share" base works pretty well.I have to remember to open the Kodak software and turn on the camera before downloading all the photos to my PC.I bought some extra memory and that helps. It says on the screen that I can take 632 pictures at 5 megapixels, or over 1,500 at 1.8 megs.Maybe it's right. I never take that many. It's really a lot more camera than I've ever had, or know how to use.The quality of the pictures is superb. It's easy to use.

4-0 out of 5 stars great great great
only problem, focus is not that great in dark setting, otherwise, a great digital camera

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Camera!If you're a beginner choose Kodak!
We bought this camera November 2004 after reading several reviews. The zoom is awesome! The sales woman at CompUSA tried to tell me that I wouldn't want this much zoom since my children are young and not into sports yet. I'm soooo glad I disregarded her advice. I have used the zoom numerous times. This camera takes excellent pictures, especially outdoors. I have had several compliments on the prints from other photographers. Also the battery is amazing! I have had to recharge the battery 2 times since getting it 6 months ago and I have taken hundreds of pictures. We also love the extra features and the fact that the camera tells you what each button does (so you don't have to memorize the instuction manual). We highly recommend the Kodak brand! I haven't totally figured out the manual settings on it yet. That's the only draw back I've had (no artsie fartsie stuff). But you can pretty much do that kind of stuff with a good Photoshop program anyway. All in all great camera!

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good camera.
I've owned this camera for several months now, and overall, I am quite happy with it.It is very simple to use.It has plenty of features and enough options to satisfy just about anyone, but is easy enough for a beginner to master. The video mode is convenient, as well, and I use it in addition to my iBook to make wonderful DVDs.

This camera really shines in outdoor settings, especially in bright sunlight. The colors are vivid and crisp. The closeup mode is especially nice, and you will get well-focused images just about every time.My one complaint is that the camera dos not perform as well as it could in low light settings.I often photograph bands in venues that are not especially well lit, and I sometimes have trouble getting decent shots without resorting to using the flash.Other cameras I have used have handled these low light situations more effectively.

However, this camera is a very good value and I would recommend it to anyone wanting a high performance, versatile camera without shelling out the cash for a digital SLR.It will serve you well.

5-0 out of 5 stars great features-sharp lens-priced right
This is an easy to use, full featured 5.0 Mpxl digital camera with a super sharp 10X optical zoom lens(plus 3X digital zoom=30X total). It will be difficult to find a larger LCD screen on any other camera. This screen is 2.2 inches and is huge compared to most cameras. Take my advice and buy a DX7590! I have been a longtime "high quality" 35mm SLR film camera user and was reluctant to "go digital".I thought I'd lose the quality and versitility of my 35mm SLR...NOT SO!The sharpness of this lense and the brillance of the color of the images is certainly equal to (and in most instances better than) anything I got from my 35mm SLR film camera. The "close up" mode yeilds some incredibly sharp photos. This camera has a long list of great features, tricks and neat things it will do for you (like being able to zoom up to 8X when reviewing images on that huge LCD screen). When buying DX7590 with the EasyShare 6000 Docking Bundle, the docking station, which also serves as a battery charger is included in the "Bundle" price. This "Bundle" is the best value(docking station sells for $60.00-$100.00 if bought seperately). Also, consider buying an extra battery and at least one 128mb (or higher) SD card, both will come in very handy. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Tungsten T5 WOW
well I love this product.love its memory capacity.love its ease in transferring of information from pc to handheld.love its flash drive capability... no more lost data cause the battery ran out!my deal was awesome I got a hard case with free rebate and a free keyboard.I am very happy.I had only one soft reset to handle a problem with my beam. its pricey but the best out there in my view.note* i purchased an additional warranty for workmanship and technical difficulites.i havent had to use it for workmanship but have made some calls to the technical dept all free and all matters thoroughly handled.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice update to my old Vx
Like several other reviewers here, this is not my first Palm device. I started many years ago with a US Robotics 500, upgraded that with more memory and an IR interface. I eventually dropped it and broke the screen so I upgraded to the (then) new Vx. I have used that until I got my last laptop and it didn't have a serial port (no way to hotsync). Now I have updated once again to the T5.

The T5 is a great device. I gues it could have a metal case and WiFi, maybe multiple memory slots, how about a CF slot for a MicroDrive? A Microphone? Sure it would be a better device with all that. But then it would be more expensive too (and since I never had any of that to begin with, I'm not missing it with the T5) I do miss a docking station though.

Maybe I've got simpler tastes. For an update to the Vx it's got everything I need and is working very well. The battery has a great lifetime. The screen is large and bright and easy to use (I'll get use to Graffiti2.. someday)
It has enough new 'toys' to play with (MP3, Photos, Color with large format screen, expansion memory) that I feel like I'm getting more than I had before (other than just USB sync'ing).

For me 4 stars is a really, really good device. Want 5 stars? Add in all the above stuff and keep the price the same ;)

1-0 out of 5 stars Utter Garbage
I recently went from an iPaq to the T5, recalling fondly how much more stable the OS was on my older Vx compared to Windows CE.How things have changed. The reset pin has turned out to be the most valuable accessory provided, and it gets a regular workout. No Wi-Fi?Really? Whose enlightened decision was that? This is a classic example of a product designed in a vaccuum, with little or no regard for the needs and expectations of the customers who keep palmOne in business.I live overseas and the tech support one gets from Singapore is, while courteous, wholly ineffective.I have been walked through unnecessary processes that border on comedy, and find myself running a mini-tutorial for them (on my dime) each time I call. The T5 is a paperweight. It will mean nothing to them, but palm has lost another customer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Palm OS device I've ever owned
I've had the T5 for a month now and can honestly say it's the best Palm OS device I've ever owned. I've owned 2 color hi-res Clies before this. What I really like about the T5:

*Great color screen. The clarity and brightness is better than the ones on my Clies. I've yet to see a PDA with a better color screen than this. Go to a retail store and check it out for yourself in person. It's fantastic.

*Large internal drive. It's great to have the extra internal memory in addition to the ability to use an external card. It's live having two card slots. This way I can still keep a lot of apps on the handheld while swapping out the external card for movies or playing MP3s.

*Plays movies beautifully. There is a free player for Palm OS devices on the net called TCPMP. It does a great job of playing movies on my T5. I just love it. To convert regular DVD movies for my T5, I use Pocket DVD Studio.

*Non-volatile memory. I just hated losing all my data with my Clies whenever the battery drained or I had to do a hard reset. And this used to happed with regularity. With the T5's flash memory, data is retained on battery drains, though not on a hard reset. The good news is that in over a month of use, I've never had to do a single hard reset. Soft resets, yes. But not one single hard reset. So this is the most stable my data has ever been on a handheld.

I like the T5 much better than the clunky slider design of the T3 which annoys me. Some complain about the design and finish on the T5, but to me the design is sleek and stylish. And I can't see anything cheap or flimsy with the finish. It feels solid and well-made in my hands.

The T5 is not perfect. There is a slight hiss in the audio, which is otherwise of excellent quality (loud, clear etc.). The hiss is most noticeable when you wear the in-ear bud type headphones. So I simply use my external type compact headphones with my T5 and all is good. Still, this is something that PalmOne shouldn't have overlooked.

Another thing to be careful about is the new file system the T5 uses, which is a little more finicky than older Palm OS systems. Some apps simply won't work well with it. However, I put well over 50 apps on my T5, and only about 3 or 4 I had to remove because of incompatibility. If you get a T5, make sure you do a clean install of all your apps, one by one, testing each as you go along. That's the only way you can weed out the apps that won't play well the T5. This is what I did and while I may have to do a soft reset now and then, I never have the need for hard resets.

If you have the patience to do a clean install like this, you should end up with a T5 like mine -- a relatively stable device that handles MP3s, movies, and graphics beautifully,in addition to doing all the traditional things a Palm device should!

1-0 out of 5 stars new features negated by functionality
I agree with all of the other 1 and 2 star reviews, with the exception of battery life. The battery on the T5 is much better than previous builds.

The T5 is truly a promising machine with many new features and memory improvements.Beautiful screen, navigation, etc etc.

HOWEVER

Let the buyer beware.Any of those new features advertised for the T5 (and they're all there) are completely negated by the functionality of the PDA itself. For instance, I have always used my palm products as an alarm clock. It's anybody's guess if the T5 is going to wake you from one morning to the next. The alarm volume is fine, but that's only when it decides to go off.The "snooze" feature is as hit-or-miss.And this is not error on the part of the user.More...

- The clock, when it decides to go off, and other alerts such as meeting notifications will keep the T5 energized if you are not there to acknowledge the alerts, thus completely draining the battery.

- The data entry interface regularly misprints your stylus inputs, and is very slow to update once you've written a character.

- The T5 is not a sturdy device.Very cheap case and buttons, which sometimes need to be pressed twice.

- Many soft and hard resets, never for any apparent reason.

The list could go on to include the new plug device that doesn't interface with any other accessories, or the lack of voice recorder, wifi, etc.

The important thing for the buyer to note is that he/she is likely to spend $300 on a device that is going to frustrate to no end on usability alone. ... Read more
