Water is yummie. Pitcher design is not.
Delicious water and the filters last far longer than Britta lets on ;)

On the other hand the pitcher does not fully seal so if you have water that reaches above the buttom of the fill-up reservoir, then the pitcher is likely to leak when you pour some water. And leak a LOT. Everywhere.

And Britta should enter the 21st Century and make a product that is dishwasher safe (this is not!).

For better or worse?
Doesn't anyone else get charcoal residue in the bottom of their pitcher?I do and so does our neighbor.I've even made sure to run water thru a new filter more than the recommended number of times.There is still a fine accumulation of charcoal powder in the bottom of the pitcher.You can write your name in it.The company admits to it, but there are even floating chunks of charcoal in the top chamber.Can't they design it so this doesn't happen.Make you wonder if it's better to drink the water straight from the tap!

Brita filter
I have used a Brita filter water pitcher for many years, and I love it! The directions clearly state not to use hot water, and the filter snaps into place in order for the water to filter through properly. When my daughter visits, she says, "I'd like a glass of Brita water!" :)

Great tasting Water
This is a very convenient item, especially if you have well water and are bothered by funny tastes and/or smells in your water.This is excellent for filtering water to drink or to cook with, and for coffee and/or tea.Another reviewer did not recommend, but it seems they used hot water (never, ever do this - cold only!), and be sure you have fitted the filter properly.For people who live with unpleasant water, this is a godsend.

nifty
This is such a cool gadget! You just fill the top with water, and it does the rest for you. The water isn't quite superior to bottled water, but even the nastiest tap water is transformed when filtered this way, and you do eventually become accustomed to the taste.

Considering how much money this will save you on bottled water, it's definitely worth the small splurge. Even though I got mine at a thrift store for three bucks, but still.

I LOVE BRITA!
I am a water FANATIC.. and I have to have water that tastes good since it is the main liquid I drink. Brita is way less expensive than buying bottled water, and as another reviewer said.. the plastic bottles can sometime contaminate the water they hold. BRITA filters out some of those contaminates. Besides all that, BRITA water tastes great. I give it 5 stars, and hope that you like it as much as I do.It does fill slow, and when its gone, you have to fill it up, and wait for it to get cold.. and that can take forever. I have one room-mate, and between he and I the pitcher was always empty. So if you are going to get one, get one that holds alot of water.. you will not be sorry. And if you are worried about cost, think about how much you spend onfor bottled water. I was drinking about 4 a week and then some.

Good alternative
This is a good alternative but has its drawbacks.I think a britta sink/faucet model would be more convenient but my faucet is not set up for one.The water from this pitcher tastes very good and I use it for my coffee which allows me to not buy filters for the pot...however....a full pitcher is just under a full pot of coffee and the refilling of the britta is very slow. (The re-fill rate seems to decrease as the filter gets older) Something to consider if you will be bringing the pitcher to the dinner table for a family...You really cant pour it till its done filtering.The filters are fairly expensive but less than buying bottled water.I also findthe pitcher to be a bit heavy and the lid delicate. altho it has not broken i can see that that might be a problem...This is a good alternative to a faucet model or bottled water but it isnt without its drawbacks.

i'm satisfied
water doesn't taste quite as good as ozarka spring (from the smaller, hard-plastic bottles).but when cold, taste is still good enough for me.much, much, MUCH easier than lugging home those gallon jugs.also a lot cheaper.plus, after reading some of the reports about bottled waters, i'm beginning to doubt if it is any better than tap with regards to bacteria and other chemicals.in fact, consumerreports.com reports that some of the plastic containers, especially the type used in 1 gallon jugs, can contaminate the water.

A fine pitcher, with some reservations
The top of this pitcher is a bit fragile; if you drop it on a tile floor, it can break, or at least the small spout cover can break, so beware.

The water does filter "slowly" but acceptable. I say "slowly" because the job of filtering water by gravity naturally takes some time. The water has to percolate down through the filter surface area; this just is a slow process without any help from positive or negative (vacuum) pressure.

The pitcher holds 2 quarts. Frankly, if your water is bad-tasting, you will be filling this pitcher up many times a day. If that is the case, get an inline filter instead. This pitcher is ok for a small family, but for a large, water-drinking, Kool-aid making, tea drinking family you may need a lot more. ...Better than Bottled Water.
After being frustrated for many years over the riding costs of bottled water and the disgusting taste of tap water, we decided to follow all the great advice from other users on this site, about the PUR Water Dispenser. From the start, the PUR Water Dispenser worked great. The filter lasted well beyond its average usage, and the easy indicator helped us know when was the right time to change it...unlike the Brita filter. We found the water taste to be far superior than bottled waters including Arrowhead and Aquafina. With this PUR water dispenser, there is no need to ever buy water again.

A Very Smart Purchase
I have had this dispenser for about a month now and couldn't be happier.I have owned a pitcher by Pur for several years and love it.I decided to get the dispenser because my wife and I drink a lot of water and we were having to refill our pitcher 3 or 4 times a day.Just like my pitcher the dispenser provides great tasting water.With the 1 gallon capacity of this unit I only have to refill it once a day or less and it is much easier to fill a glass using the spout rather than having to remove a pitcher from the fridge.My one small (very small) complaint is the amount of time it takes for the water to pass through the filter...VERY slowly.Although to be honest I probably wouldn't complain if I hadn't already owned the Pur pitcher and known how much faster that filter is.Overall I'm very happy with this item and highly recommend it.

Health and Happy after 2 years
I live in Peru, in the Andes where, for `gringos', it is imperative to have filtered water or expensive bottle water.I have tested the water that is piped from the town water supply and it had fecal contamination.

I have used the Pur Dispenser for two years and, knock on plastic, have never be sick from bacterial enteropathogens. We are also careful in food preparation (Duh).Though the filter is slated for 40 gallons I have used it for at least twice that with good results.

I highly recommend, both the dispenser, and filter for those that have (or suspect they have) contaminate water.

Possibly the best way to get better tasting water.
Contrary to press sensationalism, most of us are NOT just one glass of water away from dying a horrible death. In most of the North American continent, you'd have to try pretty darn hard to catch anything lethal from municipal water. Problem is, the very reason our water is so safe is the very reason it might not taste that good.

Chlorination gets rid of most of the harmful little beasties but leaves behind a tell-tale odor and, in some cases, taste. Making coffee from heavily chlorinated water doesn't mask it. It just gives you Caffé di Clorox.

If you live in an area with such perfectly safe, perfectly unappetizing municipal water, the choices for better tasting water range from the overblown (a reverse osmosis system costing a few thousand to install and several hundred dollars a year to maintain) to the overpriced (delivered bottled water that most likely comes from the same source as your tap water) to the overly complicated (faucet mounted filters that get in the way when you're trying to do the dishes).

The ideal solution: a filtration device that's inexpensive to buy and maintain while remaining unobtrusive in operation. That perfectly describes the PUR Plus Dispenser.

Since each filter gives you about 40 gallons of filtered water, you're already way ahead of the cost of delivered bottled water. The filters cost a tad more than filters for a Brita pitcher or dispenser but the extra cost goes into the PUR filter's integrated Automatic Safety Monitor.

The monitor tells you without a doubt when it's time to replace the filter by counting the number of times the upper tray has been filled. For correct operation of the Automatic Safety Monitor, you refill the upper tray only after all of the water has passed through. Also, note that the same filter fits the much smaller capacity PUR Plus Pitcher. The Automatic Safety Monitor has 2 markers, a triangle and a circle, that indicate the end of its useful life. In the PUR Plus Dispenser, you replace the filter when the indicator lines up with the triangle mark, not the circle.

Thanks to a generously sized hand-hold at each end of the dispenser, filling it in a large kitchen sink is easy, as is carrying it to the refrigerator. Since it holds 2 gallons of water, the weight of a completely filled dispenser might be difficult for those with limited strength. The solution: refill the upper tray only when there's enough room in the lower tank to accommodate at least half of the filtered water.

The dispenser's tap is very durable. I've owned this dispenser for years and the tap shows no sign of coming loose or leaking. You can fill a single glass by pulling it just until the water starts to flow. To fill a pitcher, the tap can be pulled further to a locked position, then pushed back when the pitcher's full.

The PUR Plus Dispenser doesn't soften water, and to coffee connoisseurs, that's an advantage. Artificially softened water can make coffee taste strange because the molecular "spaces" left by the missing minerals are filled with undesirable flavor elements in the coffee. Instead, the PUR Plus Dispenser concentrates solely on the stuff you DON'T want in your water: chlorine, lead, asbestos, certain microbial contaminants. Any minerals that might already be present or added for improved taste are left in.

The PUR Plus dispenser also accepts the PUR Ultimate filter, providing the highest of level of filtration available.

Blame Target
If you are having issues with it being backordered look closer to who it is being purchased frmo.Target is the company and Amazon is only doing the front end.

Amazon offers a nice price but it is NOT available.
Amazon continues to lure unsuspecting buyers of this filter to their website and actually advertises a low price and quick delivery.It will process your order and tell you later it is on backorder with an estimated delivery date a few weeks out, but after several weeks they finally notify you via email that it is cancelled. The product is fine, but Amazon is not as long as they continue to act this way.Avoid ordering this product through Amazon and look elsewhere.

Nice looking and really does the job it's supposed to do
The chrome look of this unit is quite nice and really does look like chrome (doesn't look cheap like some other metallic plastics), matching chrome fixtures nicely.But the important part is that this filter really does its job.You'll find at Pur's website that the Pur Ulitmate is NSF certified to effectively filter 28 contaminants listed in NSF Standard 53, whereas some competing products, including a popular disposable model that doesn't use cartridges, claim certification for less than a third of those.I'm sure there are truly comparable filters out there, but check the specs before you buy.Flow rate seems reasonable to me.I can fill up my 12-cup coffee carafe in under a minute, and I don't mind taking a couple of extra seconds for the peace of mind that I'm drinking cleaner, safer water.After all, I won't be needing it for washing dishes or taking a shower.

It's very easy to install, and it seems more durable than an older generation Pur faucet-mount filter I had that developed leaks after a while.This one has been working for almost a year with no leakage at all.

More about aesthetics than function
This is a very good-looking filter.We live in Orlando where the water tastes like sewage, so a good filtration system is a must.This filter definitely cleans the water to drinking standards and the on/off functionality is well thought out.However, this is one of the SLOWEST water filters we have tried.It starts off okay but after a week or so, we wanted to return it because it took so long just to fill a glass.We tried another filter and the same things happened.A friend who was staying with us informed us that her PUR had done the same thing.

Chlorine's A killer !!
I bought this unit and within 5 days started to notice A big difference, my legs and back were no longer itchy (from my skin being dry due to the chlorine)and my dandruff disapeared! Think of this,the steam inside your shower is filled with chlorine and other types of Contaminants which are harmful to your skin, just think of whats its doing when you breath it(steam)in!!
