This single cartridge stainless steel fluoride removal water filter contains only a SIR-900 containing cartridge. The SIR-900 media is a synthetic adsorbent media that is highly selective for arsenic, fluoride and lead. Arsenic and fluoride removal is sensitive to pH, preferring an acidic pH. Lead removal is pH independent. The extremely high surface area and pore distribution gives this media the highest possible operating capacity and lowest possible leakage. It removes metals through a combination of adsorption and chemical reaction with the media; thus the removal is not dependent on ion exchange. Fluoride capacity is up to 11,000 ppm (parts per million) with effluent levels below 0.2 ppm from 10 ppm feed. The EPA maximum limit for fluoride is 4 ppm. Therefore, municipalities will not be adding more than 4 ppm to public drinking water - thus the feed is less than 10 ppm. High pH and high bicarbonate levels reduce capacity for fluoride and arsenic removal -- above 100 ppm bicarbonate will result in a reduction of capacity by 50%. Above 200 ppm the reduction is 75%. Pretty good water filter
I received this water filter two days after I placed the order. I'm happy with the fast service. As for the water filter, you might want to consider rinsing it after taking it out from the package before inserting it into the coffee maker. Also, I ran water through the coffee maker twice before making the first pot of coffee for the peace of mind. If you have paper filter placed before running the water, you will be able to see little green particals in it at the end of the process.

Great Item, but can't find it anywhere.
The water filter for the Braun Flavorselect 12 cup coffee maker Model KF187 is a great design.I rate it #5 for it's design, but since my original purchase of the coffee maker, I can't find the filter units anywhere.

A Good Idea, But a Scarce Item
I've enjoyed my Braun coffee maker, and this filter is one of the reasons.I have well water that already tastes great, but some grit gets into the tap water, and this filter takes care of that.People often say what I great cup of coffee I make, but I use perfectly ordinary coffee, just with really great water.

However...these filters are expensive and virtually impossible to find.No major retailer seems to carry them, and the Braun customer service center is only open during business hours, and does not seem to have a website that I can find... This filter system would be a lot more appealing if it were easier to buy and replace, and also cheaper.

Works well, but is horribly overpriced!
It really does make a difference when some of the chlorine is filtered out of your coffee (and even more so in your bourbon) water, but these filters are a rip off price-wise.It's hard to believe Braun wouldn't make money selling them at a third of the price.

GREAT PRODUCT-BUT HARD TO FIND

DO NOT PURCHASE
I purchased this item after going through the reviews and articles of countless other water distiller sites. I had 3 different models in mind. One was only $99 (http://www.wholesalewaterdistillers.com/), this waterwise one at $200 (available through http://www.hacres.com/home.asp ) and one for $400.

The $99 is recommended if not willing to pay a high fee. The webaddress I gave may look a little cheezy, but you can call the owner up directly and speak to him about the products. In fact, he strongly does not recommend this Waterwise Product. He says many people have trouble with the timer and something to do with the plastic. Also Waterwise has sold this modle over to Kenmore (Sears brand) and it has the same probs. (Kenmore model can be purchased anywhere from $100-200)

The $400 model my family owns. It is complete stainless steel, not plastic anywhere and it has a lifetime warrenty. Unfourtuantly, I do not have the website at this time to list it here. It's the top of the line in home distillers and has a life time warrently (compared to waterwise 1 year)

Now my nightmare with waterwise. I ordered through the hacres.com place I listed above. It only cost $200 with shipping. I had wanted a water distiller for some time. We don't drink the tap water for the contaiments in it, and I'm tired of getting Reverse Osmose water from water machines and paying all that money. Well when it arrived, it was a little bigger than I expected. Do plan on having it in an area where all the fans can freely circulate. The first batch of water needs to be dumped, just to clean the product. My 2nd and 3rd batches tasted and smelled bad....and so did all of those after it. On the 3rd morning after having the product, it wouldn't work. I thought perhaps I was doing something wrong so I called waterwise and told them my problem (the carafat light was coming on, thereby not allowing me to start the distilling process). They looked up in the computer the message, put me on hold and said that they were shipping out a whole new machine to me.

Okay, that was bad news...I asked what was the matter. Wouldn't you know it, it was the same thing the gentleman on the phone told me about from the $99 water distiller place. The timer broke and it was irreplaceable. Being that my machine was under warrently, they were shipping out a whole new one to me and wanted me to send my broken one back to them.

Well when everything hit me sometime later, I relized that I didn't want a machine like that. I wanted to have my water distiller around for more than a year (esp at that price). So I decided to send everything back...which resulted in a big headache from both waterwise and hacers.com. Each company wanted back the broken distiller. After many phone calls, the situation was finally solved. I never want to go through such an experience again.

Used to use, tired of replacing sink faucet stems
I used to use the Ultimate PUR and pour the water into a Brita pitcher in the frig. It seemed to work extremely well.

Two annoyances, one of which I wonder if anyone else has had...

First, the filter slows down to an almost unbearable speed, which I suppose is probably good, in a way. (Makes the brita seem fast (insert laugh here) )

Second, the back pressure on the sink faucet stem, was creating leaks; the back pressure was breaking down the rubber seals in the faucet stem. Since I stopped using the filter I haven't had any leaks. Anyone who has replaced the stem in a faucet knows what I mean.

I have to admit, since I quit using both filters (only brita now) the water doesn't taste as good, tends to have a "paper" flavor.Kind of like making coffee with a paper filter.

If any one you have ever cut open these filters they are completely different designs.

P.S. If you have never made coffee with a gold mesh filter, check it out.

Pur does not perform or last
I have been using Pur Ultimate products for many years, and can attest that the maximum use that anyone will reasonably obtain from a filter is 25-30 gallons. Even this is pushing the envelope, since when the filter reaches about 20 gallons, the flow rate is reduced to droplets, and it will take 20+ minutes to fill a one gallon container. This, of course, increases the cost per gallon to the area of $.50 which is really no great savings over spring water, and in this writer's opinion, the filtered product does not taste as good, but it does save the lifting (20 gallons is 160 lbs), and the storage space required for the spring water, and it effectively removes the chlorine taste from New York City water.

The housing units themselves are somewhat shoddy, and this should be another consideration. At one point or another, the plastic housing will develop a hairline crack, and then, of course, the unfiltered tap water will come out in ever increasing quantities first as a drip, and then as a flow. I have had three units in which this occurred, and the latest one will be the last one that I purchase. I have about 20 filters remaining, and one brand new unit (a "gift" from Proctor and Gamble after a previous unit failed), but now, I have no more time to hang on the phone and go begging to P & G for a replacement; I am simply giving up on Pur.

Although the one I bought from Amazon was leaking from indicator . I called the company and the representive was so nice that she replaced my complete set free . My new PUR faucet is working very good untill now let see how long it will work . Although it had complain but when company representative is ready to replace it free then buying this product is worth as water tastes very good and clean . I recommend this product

NYC-er? Too slow, too expensive!
We use about a gallon of water a day, and I'm tired of lugging bottled water from the store.We settled on the Pur filter based on its capabilities (they claim to filter out more than the competition).

We get a decent flow for two or so days after replacing the filter (about two gallons worth), but it quickly degrades after that.After about a week, it takes about a minute to fill up a glass.After another week, it's more like three minutes (which seems like an eternity when you're thirsty at 3am!).After that, it's pointless -- it drips, drips, drips into the glass.

It's become even worse recently, even after installing a brand-new unit (the whole thing - not just the filter).Now, we get about a week out of a filter.I give it two stars because though I'm frustrated by it's slow flow, the water we do get out of it is good.

Maybe this is a NYC thing?Perhaps other parts of the country have cleaner water?I don't know.All I do know is that if you live around here, think about another alternative.

TAKE YOUR CHANCE! HIT OR MISS
I HAVE USED "PURE" SINCE P&G INTRODUCED THE FIRST TAB ATTACHED DESIGN YEARS BACK. AND, I HAVE USED 4 FILTERS SO FAR. I LIVE IN BOSTON AND THE PREVIOUS AREA WAS CAMBRIDGE BOTH IN NEWER BUILDINGS.

THE FIRST ONE WAS THE ORIGINAL SLOW "WHITE" FILTER DRIPPING THE WATER LIKE, AS SOMEONE SAID BELOW, A CHINESE WATER TORTURE.

THE SECOND ONE-WHITE-WAS FINE BUT IT STARTEDS LEAKING AFTER SEVERAL WEEKS. I SUSPECTED THE QUALITY CONTROL BUT THE WATER RAN FASTER THAN THE FIRST ORIGINAL FOR LONGER PERIOD UNTIL I FINALLY LOST MY PATIENCE OF LONG WAITING WATCHING THE WATER TAP.

THE THIRD ONE WAS WITH A NEW CHROME COLOR. IT RAN FINE IN THE SAME KITCHEN BUT WHEN I ATTACHED IT TO THE NEW SINK AFTER MOVING, IT GOT CLOGGED AND TOTALLY BLOCKED.

I JUST BOUGHT THE LAST ONE - ANOTHER CHROME COLOR- AND TRIED AT THE SAME PLACE BUT IT WOULD NOT RUN PROPERLY AFTER THE RECORD OF 3 DAYS. AND I TESTED IT SOMEWHERE ELSE AND IT DID NOT WORK EITHER.

MY VERDICT IS - DO NOT TO BUY IT. YOU WILL ONLY HATE THE QUALITY AND THE BRAND NAME IF YOU ARE NOT LUCKY ENOUGH TO GET THE WORKING ONES.

ADD: I CONTACTED P&G LATELY AND THEY OFFERED A FREE "PUR WATER PITCHER WITH "ADVANTAGE" FILTER. I WAS TOLD THAT THIS ONE HAS A POROUS FILTER AND WOULD RUN 'HARD' WATER FASTER THAN ATTACHED FILTER VERSIONS. THE REPRESENTATIVE GUARANTEED LENGTH OF 2-3 MONTHS OF WATER FILTRATION BUT IT HAS BEEN 7 DAYS AND NOW THE INDICATOR SHOWS THAT 1/3 OF ITS FULL LENGTH. I FILLED WATER ABOUT 3-4 TIMES FOR 7 DAYS . AND THIS WILL BE MORE EXPENSIVE THAN BUYING BOTTLED WATER IF I HAVE TO BUY THIS ADVANTAGE FILTER EVERY MONTH.

Bit a better Brita
They work; I have two, one outside the fridge 3qt (coffee, tea, cooking etc.)and one in 2qt (drinking water, diluting juice, etc). A few people have mentioned a some shortcomings or gripes; here's my take on those problems.
1)The top is made out of fragile plastic and breaks if you drop it. Yeah well it's made out of that kind hard plastic because it's easier to clean effectively. Soft plastic might bounce but it would be less effectively cleaned. No solution 'cept buy another before you break the one you have.
2)Someone wrote that when they clean their jug, every two months when they change the filter, they notice "pinky fungus stuff". See above... the jar was designed to be easily cleaned like ... er... weekly, daily, hourly ... take your pick. Then you wont have the pinky stuff problem .. perhaps you didn't realise but that pinky stuff causes brain deterioration ... you start buying valentines day stuff and barbie outfits all year round .. even big hairy guys slump to this. BE CAREFUUL!
3)The top on the 3qt model sticks then suddenly opens ... it's partly that hard plastic problem again .. just give the little top a quick flip up before you pour to break thewater "seal" caused by a sticky capillary attraction effect. Or just pull it off and let in odours and insects etc.
4)Filling the jug up to the top causes water to leak out over the sides YEP it does ... try filling up to the mark on the inside .. bowt a half inch down from the top.
5)The 3qt jug is awkward to hold. Yes it is if you have a small hand or holding 3 qts is a problem. The 2qt is the solution or the "box" style that you fill and put on a shelf (in the fridge say).
6)The water filters through very slowly. Yes it does, but I've discovered a way to speed it up! Pour in the water... keep the lid up .. put the lower half of your face over the top and exhale enthusiastically. If you've read this far the "pinky stuff" is getting to you. CHEERS!

Good water filter but has flaws
I bought this model by looking at the reviews above when I got it home and started to use it I was disappointed with the cover when you pour the water out it does not pour smooth in fact the cover will either pop off or the water will splash out when being poured ending up on the floor. The digital change filter indicator is a joke it does not tell you if you have actually need to change the filiter it is like a calender and in 2 weeks a bar will be removed. The pitcher it self is very ackward to handle. The water is good but there is a after taste.The replacement filters are a little on the expensive side Not worth the money

I'm in love with Brita
Our tap water smells something like a swimming pool.I used to drink it when I desperate.I know Brita doesn't really filter out the actual cholrine, but it is unbelievable how much the smell and taste of the water has changed.

digital change filter indicator is misleading
I bought the pitcher with the digital change filter indicator thinking that it would tell you when you've filtered 40 gallons of water. However, it just indicates that the filter needs changing after it counts 8 weeks, regardless of how much water you have filtered.
