Incredibly slow, clunky interface, horrible company
The program is decent in terms of features, but it's very slow once you get past the initial screen.It seems like the program was designed in the 80's and updated with duct tape and rubber bands to get the current version.

I recently tried to reach the management of the company because it seems they dropped their personal finance product.I wanted to make sure that MyBooks (and the entire company, for that matter) will still exist in a year.

2003 Multi User FLAWs - No WebSupport Answers
Beware, both the 2002 and 2003 multi-user packages have a significant flaw(s) that are extremely frustrating.

Peachtree has a problem in that it will automatically duplicate PO / Invoice / Sales Order numbers without warning. It has no system to protect against the duplication. The objective is automation, not having to select numbers from a paper log.

If you try to run multiple workstations on a SOHO wireless network, expect major problems. You wil probably experience table locks that require constant reboot. We had to move from wireless to wired LAN - using the same router. Also had to purchase new LAN NIC cards. Problem fixed. The wireless network performed flawlessly for Peer to Peer and Internet access.

Overall the system has some merits, but the goal of Peachtree is to maximize revenue from support calls. Don't expect to find any relevant information on the Peachtree website. You will find more on USENET Newsgroups.

Since we switched from QuickBooks to Peachtree, recommend that those in need research other systems. Our only reason for switching fromQB was to have assembly capabilities. The new version of QB now has that feature. ... Read more

Hard to use and operate.Be aware!
This software and some others in the line are like the cars from the 80's, use old technologies. The design is old and look and feel is old as well! I would think as if I was driving an 80's car when I used a newer technology software. Now is a time to use software that use .Net technology.

Switch and Bait
I don't know who wrote the reviews which rated this product above 1 star but they must work for Peachtree. An accounting system that does not even let you change the due date on a customer invoice after it is entered is no accounting system. Peachtree's answer to this and other short comings is, "You should buy our top of the line system."

I urge anyone considering this system to purchase to reconsider.

Superior value, superior integrity
This is a simple, yet impressive product.We switched to Peachtree from MAS90 when we downsized.It costs only a 10th of what MAS90 cost, but compares very well.In some ways better, like Payroll.Anyone that can't balance their accounts with this product has a poor understanding of running a business, and using accounting software.It certainly does not have the features that larger companies need, but if you do less than $5,000,000 per year in sales, and won't grow past 6 or 7 users, then this is a good buy for many types of businesses.Especially because it has a great import/export wizard, to help you get it going, and then later to migrate out of it if you grow!

Small business owner
I have found this to be the best GAAP accounting software available. In responce to the vetrinary clinc review. I'm not sure why you've had so much trouble I've found Peachtree's support to awesome, great techs with above average knowledge.
I guess you MUST first understand accounting before using this product. I highly recommend this product for start up companies.

wonderful product
I found Peachtree Complete 2004 to be an excellent product for my small business. The set up program made it very easy to get started and with all the sample information already in the product, it was very easy to copy the information to set up my own books. The fact that it automatically converted my information from QuickBooks made it even easier. The support plan seems a little pricey, but well worth it. A GREAT software for small businesses
I have worked with over a dozen accounting packages over the last 15 years, including beta testing such products as Open Systems, Great Plains, and Profit. I have used Peachtree versions 2 - 2002 for my own company and I have set up the program for innumerable clients over the years.Peachtree is the BEST program for smaller businesses - bar none. It has a terrific payroll module, good a/p and a/r, and the ability to evaluate your business standing right now, not next month when your CPA finishes the books.

The key to the program is to have the program set up by an expert and to have occasional maintenance on the system. After setup, my customers have me out about twice a year to perform updates, create permanent backups, fix minor problems, and answer questions.

Just because the software costs less than [$] (multi-user versions), doesn't mean that you can get by with only spending [$] for a class to become an expert. Look for someone to come in and tailor the program to your exact needs. This is a more expensive process, but considering that Peachtree's real competitors (NOT QuickBooks) start at thousands of dollars, you are still better off financially-- and you will have REAL financial information to boot.

Longtime User
I've been using computerized small business accounting systems since the early 1970's...After going into business for myself (in a field unrelated to computers) I was reduced to a manual system until I found an excellent DOS system for the PC - a system that went through several owners, eventually winding up as the ACCPAC system from Computer Associates.ACCPAC,was slow to move to Windows and so when I began to look for a Windows accounting system I had to look elsewhere....

I've looked at all the most popular "off the shelf" accounting software as well as a number of shareware programs.I'm convinced Peachtree Complete is superior, in almost every respect, to all the rest of them.I've used every version since the first (which curiously was Version 2.0).Some of the early versions were buggy but the last few versions haven't had serious problems...I'm currently using version 7 and have ordered Version 8.

Each succeeding version of Peachtree - which come about every two years - comes with a little more integration with Microsoft Office.Version 7, for example, has an Excel icon on most report screens.Clicking on the icon opens Excel and dumps the report into the spreadsheet.The formatting on the resulting spreadsheet is pretty good - but there are no formulas.

As I understand multiuser capability (which I don't use) has been part of the package until Version 8 where it costs extra, depending on the number of users.

One of the grumbles about Peachtree is that you have to know something about accounting to use it.That should be true whether you are keeping books on Peachtree, Quicken or a Big Chief tablet and No. 2 lead pencil.If you are running a business where accurate records are required and where the financial statements are relied upon for the management of the business and you don't have some knowledge of proper accounting methods, then you BETTER seek some expert assistance.If all you really want is a check writing program or a billing program, then a full featured accounting program may be overkill and simpler software may be sufficient.Just keep in mind there tends to be an inverse relationship between ease of use on the one hand andflexibility and scope of features available on the other hand (though exceptions abound).

All the major functions such as General Ledger, Accounts Receivable, Accounts Payable, Payroll, Inventory, a really cool Job Costing feature, etc., are fully integrated; a payroll check is immediately accessible in the G.L. without having to do any intermediate journal posting.The Fixed Assets program which will interface but IS a module that runs separately.

Peachtree is a General Ledger based system in that the full detail of all journal entries affecting a particular account is available in the G.L.Double clicking on a particular entry "drills down" to and then displays the check, invoice or other journal entry source document.Two fiscal years of detail are maintained.By changing the "accounting period" to the period (month) of interest, you can edit, add or delete transactions within this time period.

One of the strongest areas of Peachtree is the reporting capabilities - probably the part I like most about it.Almost everything that goes to screen or print is highly customizable.But be advised, taking advantage of this flexibility WILL require some time and effort to learn how to do.This is exacerbated by the fact that there are actually three different kinds of reports - Financial Statements, Forms, and Reports, each of which has its own system of modification.Financial statements can be designed with up to 30 columns with a myriad of date range possibilities and subsets of data (such as departments, enterprises, regions, etc.)The structure of financial statements is not tied to the order of the account numbering scheme.

Payroll is quite complete for software in this price range.In addition to the basics, you can set up 401k deductions, maintain important dates, track vacation time etc.Peachtree aggressively markets its Payroll Tax service but it is easy to update the tax tables yourself.There are default tax tables but you can also specify tax tables that are specific to one business. (Peachtree permits using the software to keep books for multiple business entities.)

For most of the common data entry tasks you can use either the mouse or the keyboard for navigation and entry.But it is somewhat inconsistent - for example if you are posting invoices and come to a customer who isn't on file you have to use the mouse to access the options on the screen that allows you to enter a new customer "on the fly".

Data entry can be assisted by optional features such as drop down screens in fields where you have lists - customer ID, inventory ID for example, "smart fill in" that completes the entry for you among others.On data entry forms you have the option to hide certain fields that you don't use soyou don't have to skip over them as you are making entries.For example, in recording invoices if you don't use Customer Purchase Orders, alternate "ship to" addresses, sales reps, etc., you can hide these fields in your input form.

Of course there are things I don't like.The General Ledger requires more paper to print than necessary.I'm not keen on the fact there is only a single field for names (employees, vendors, customers) which makes it difficult to get an alphabetical list unless you design ID numbers in such a way as to approximate alphabetical order - or enter names in the Last Name, First Name reverse order.Mailing label options are limitedYou can, for example, assign a "type" to your customers, say Doctors, Fishermen and Golfers and generate a mailing list for any type.But you can't specify a customer is a member of the Doctor type AND the Golfer type (except maybe on Wednesday afternoon).Nor can you quickly go through your list of customers and check off a subset to receive a special mailing.You can develop a report of your customers that shows the amounts of inventory items each customer bought but you can't get a report of inventory items listing which customers bought that item.(You CAN dump the former report into Excel, sort it to get the latter order and then clean up the result.)

...I have set up a number of businesses which included sole proprietorship, partnership, charitable organization and corporation structures.I would recommend Peachtree Complete as an accounting solution to almost any business.

Peachtree Complete Accounting 7.0
After using Peachtree 7.0 for a year now in my manufacturing business, I still can't get the checking account to show an accurate balance!We stillhave to manage some features by creating spreadsheets in Excel that we usein parallel to Peachtree.Also a drag to have to purchase modules, forms,tax tables, and additional use licenses separately (and repeatedly) at sucha high price...I resent feeling like I'm being bled by the manufacturer nowthat I'm 'locked in' to using the software.I REALLY wish the initialpurchase had included two use licenses, since I have to buy an additionalone JUST to write occasional quotes from home on my laptop.

I used threedifferent accounting programs before purchasing Peachtree, all lesscomprehensive, but more accurate.I'm still wrestling with forms thatprint differently than they display on-screen, and so on.Nevertheless,I'm planning to buy version 8.0 and plod on until I learn it all, since itis the one program I know will serve me years into the future.

Great for accountants

Powerful but not user friendly
I have used Peachtree Accounting for about 5 years now.I am happy with it's capabilities, but it is not particularly user friendly.The interface is not at all intuitive and there is a lot of redundancy.It is a verymouse intense program (five mouse clicks to complete a task when two wouldhave sufficed).The account reconciliation program for balancing yourcheckbook is cumbersome and difficult to use.

I have an MBA and a strongaccounting background and it definitely helps in using this program.Ithink this is more of a useful tool for accountants or professionalbookkeepers than your average entrepreneurial Joe running his own smallbusiness.For that type of user, I would probably recommendQuickBooks.

Peachtree is far superior for keeping track of inventory andits payroll features are excellent.It also has a job costing feature thatI use that I don't think can be matched by any other software in its pricerange.

Overall, if you are an intermediate to expert computer user andhave a strong knowledge of accounting, or do a lot of job costing or workwith inventories, this is an excellent tool.But it is clearly not foreveryone.If you don't need some of these features, or if you want theprogram to demystify accounting and make it easy, you might want to lookfor a product that is easier to use or more appropriate to your accountingneeds. ... This program meets it's target potential!
I purchased this program to handle all of my accounting for my Web Design and Hosting business. For the tasks that I need accomplished, this program is awesome. It is easy to use and very user friendly. I will tell you, though, that it is not a cheap alternative to the full blown Peachtree program. Too many people fall into that trap, and think that they will get all the features the full version has. This version is targeted towards the small business owner who keeps track of his own accounting data and doesn't need to do complicated search tasks. If you are looking for a small program that won't cost you a fortune and can out perform Money 2002, Quicken, etc, and you don't need a lot of complicated features, this is the program for you. I love it!

Skip this product
First Accounting is lacking a search function.As a result, you can't look up a transaction by check number or any other criterion.You can only create a report for a specific time period and then hope to find your transaction there.Leaving out the search function seriously diminishes the usefulness of the product.

My second complaint regards the sales journal.Sales accounts are defined by customer, and each customer can be linked to only one kind of sale.I run a construction company that sells and services equipment in one transaction.Peachtree only allows me to record a sale for one of the two types of revenue that I receive.Therefore, I am forced to record service income as equipment sales, or vice-versa.What a limitation!

disappointment strikes
I purchased an earlier version of this program in 2001 and was disappointed by the poor search capabilities.For example, in the check register I was unable to search by account number.There are only a limited number of fields (4 or 5 depending on where you are in the program)in which one can search for transactions.

You are limited to only about 30 characters in the memo field and cannot search on that field to retrieve a transaction.

There is a pop-up list of accounts by account number, but not by account name.So, if you remember the number of the account it is easy to enter, but difficult by account name.

Support is VERY expensive.Peachtree Accounting once sold for $5,000.They have been forced by competition to cut their price, but seem determined to make it back on support.

The only free support you get when you buy the program relates to setting it up (NOT operating the program).After that you pay -- by subscription, by 900 number or by credit card.The written materials that accompany the program are limited and the built in help is not always clear.

By the way, I was in Public Accounting some years ago, so I am better prepared than most to deal with accounting programs.

In general, this program is clumsier than the cheap DOS program I bought in 1988!I would have continued using it for my business, but it died when Y2K arrived.I'm still looking for a basic, easy to use program for my small business. ... Read more

It takes time to learn this software!
If you dont' know anything about accouting, this is not the software for you.There are tutorials available with the software, but you must know the terminology first for it to make sense.There is a free trial of the full PeachTree Accounting available from Best Software, but be aware that if you try it out, you cannot transfer anything from the free trial to First Accounting, since they are different versions.You could spend a lot of time working with the trial and then have to do it all again if you buy First Accounting.

I am able to handle a small payroll without subscribing to the payroll service, but it did take some experimentation and time to figure out how the user-entered tax formulas worked (there are two sample companies included with the software).There are a lot of options for computing taxes -- you don't have to use complicate tables, and simple formulas are available.But it wasn't easy and I am still learning.

This product is very misleading, in order to do payroll you have to subscribe to the 'payroll tax service' from Peachtree, which costs [$$], twice the original product price.Sure, they say you can 'edit the tax tables' yourself, but this is actually entering an equation where you must know all the variable names the program uses. ...
