3-0 out of 5 stars Continuous speech recognition needs a VERY fast CPU and RAM
Those that say this software is "unstable" do not take into consideration the VERY high cpu usage needed to perform continuous speech recognition (as ooposed to "discrete" speech dictation used in IBM VoiceType, which was possible on a Pentium 1 233 Mhz, and required users to pause between words).

In short: get a gigabyte of ram, specially if you're using WinXP. If you run Win2000 with 512MB ram, try to add an extra 256mb stick.

And your cpu should be at the very least a 2Ghz Pentium 4, or higher, despite what the box claims. With these requirements in mind, the software works as advertised in my experience.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good recognition, but very unstable program
This is my first experience with dictation software, so I don't have anything to compare it to.All I can do is offer observations on how this one has worked for me.

Training this software takes quite a long time; a few hours if you want to get maximum performance.I actually wouldn't mind so much, except that you need to retrain it every time you buy a new microphone or work in an environment with a different sound level. For me, this has meant having to train the software several times.Reading the provided material so the software can sample your voice is actually kind of fun, but after you've done it a few times (reading the same passages to train for different microphones or environments), it is exceptionally tedious.I wish they had provided a larger selection of reading material.

The headphones which come with the software are adequate, but I heard you can get better recognition with a higher quality set.(I upgraded to a Plantronics Audio 90, which is better, but not one I'd recommend.)

My biggest complaint about the software is that it consumes a tremendous amount of system resources on your computer.I can not be running any other programs at the same time, or it crashes.I am using a computer with a 1.40 GHz Centrino processor with 512MB of RAM.Even when I am running only IBM ViaVoice and MS Word, I clearly run into performance issues. After a while my computer starts to bog down and I have to restart it.My computer's specs are way above what IBM recommends, so that *shouldn't* have been an issue. If a beefier computer would solve my problems, I think IBM should specify "minimal" and "optimal" system requirements.I don't mind if a program is a system hog if the developer is willing to *admit* it and tell me what I need.

More complaints:ViaVoice types with unusual quirks which it seems would have been easy for IBM to have prevented. For example, it often fails to capitalize the first word in a sentence, especially when dictating in chat software. When you dictate for a passage to be in quotation marks, it leaves a space between the quotation marks and the words inside the quote. For some words, it seems impossible to get the software to recognize that you are dictating a word, and not issuing a command.

IBM's ViaVoice is considerably cheaper than the competition.Unfortunately, I have no idea if the higher price of the competing product (Dragon) is justified by being a higher-quality product.ViaVoice is probably adequate for most casual dictating needs. If you've never used dictation software before, it's really impressive the way it can usually understand what you're saying. The more you use it, the better it gets at recognizing what you are saying, and the better you will get at enunciating in a way it can understand. After a few months of casual usage, I would say my software is hitting 90 to 95% accuracy (higher under ideal conditions with simple words).

The bottom line is, for the price, this is pretty good software (though I sure do wish it was more stable). If you use dictation a lot and know that the competing products are better quality, they would be worth the price. But for a casual user, this software is fine. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Upgrade from 10.5 to 11.0 was BAD choice; no updates
I am a systems integrator and have been supplying clients with PC Anywhere for several years for remotely monitoring chemical and industrial processes. This involves animated HMI software and it has always worked fine. When using ver.11.0.1, I have found that the animations will not automatically update when the host and remote are connected over a local network connection using fixed IP addresses. The same software works fine over a dial-up connection.I called their tech. support and received absolutely no satisfaction.I guess it's back to 10.5 till something better comes along.

2-0 out of 5 stars Clunky Upgrade
There is a definite downturn with this new release- screen draws are noticeably slower and simply starting the application takes longer. The new interface has the task-based side bar found in newer applications, but it adds no benefit while robbing me of valuable screen space - the old toolbar at the top was much better.I applaud Symantec's fixing odd behaviors (non-invasive, such as strange 'quick' popups to handle internal routines, etc), and I appreciate their attempt at making the user experience more consistent and smooth, which they did, but the overall value of the product has dropped. For the core features I use (connect, control, end session) the performance has dropped- and I have no need for the new features.I'll be selling this on ebay... right after I go back to the odd but faster 10.5.

1-0 out of 5 stars I regret upgrading
I upgraded several systems from 10.5 to 11.0 and have found that the new version does not work nearly as well as the old version. My biggest complaint is that in cases where the host computer has a dynamically updating screen, the remote computer may not receive updates at all making it look as if the host computer is either stuck or is still processing something when it has in fact finished.

There is an interface change that added a navigation panel to the left of the remote display that oftentimes makes the entire window too large thereby forcing me to scroll through windows that I didn't have to scroll through using the old version. The addition of the 'Remote Management' tools would be helpful if they worked properly. The command line tool very often didn't respond properly at all, making it not worth attempting to use when I can just open a command window through the remote window.

I am going to have to go through the extra work of uninstalling 11.0 and reinstalling 10.5 on several systems.Very disappointing!

2-0 out of 5 stars Step backward from 10.5
I regret spending the money for the "upgrade" from 10.5.PcA 11 no longer shows time remaining for file transfer, nor does it show transfer speed. It hangs, giving a "Cannot create directory" message for no discernable reason, where there was no problem with 10.5If 11 has some advantages, I find nothing that does me any good.It has a different interface, but I don't see that as either better or worse. I'm going to remove it and go back to 10.5. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars ViaVoice - very disappointing
You don't get your money's worth with ViaVoice. At first, it seemed to work fine.Contrary to what the program is supposed to do, the more I used it, the worse it got."Training" the software is extremely time consuming. However, I did this in hopes of improving its performance.Unfortunately, after spending all the time doing that, it was actually worse, not better. It has finally gotten so bad I cannot use the application at all.As I am dictating, it throws in random words which can't possibly have anything to do with what I am saying, some of them foreign.Dictate, "Now is the time for all good men to come to the aid of their country," and you are likely to get "Avarice now is the Bois time for all good men to Gwendolyn."Help is impossible to find, and if you go to the IBM or ScanSoft site, you have to pay for it.Do not buy this software.

1-0 out of 5 stars This is a waste of time, effort, and money.
I bought this product to use with Microsoft Word.I can not dictate anything! What a huge disappointment.Too bad I could not rate it 0 stars.Don't even consider this product, it is fruitless to even try to get it to work at all.

4-0 out of 5 stars Getting Pretty Good
I thought that voice recognition software had finally reached the point where I would buy it.Based on my research IBM seemed to be the best. The Standard version really is all you need for dictation of reports, articles, letters, etc.Email will require a more advanced version.

It actually works quite well. The key is to spend time at the beginning to train it to your voice and to correct each error. Now its not going to be like Star Wars (Scotty: "A keyboard, how quaint.") but it works and has greatly reduced my Carpal Tunnel wrist pain.

Not quite 5 stars, I am a tough critic, but worth the money and I am using it daily in my work. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Lousy Software - Unreliable, Slow, Very Difficult To Use
I purchased this software because it was associated with SnapFish, a company I've come to trust. That was a big mistake.

1) The software is very sluggish. I have a nearly new PC with a fast processor and 1.5GB RAM and PhotoShow takes up to a minute to perform the most simple function. More complex functions, such as creating a slideshow with a hundred or so photos, takes anywhere from 15 minutes to 45.
2) The user interface is very rudamentary - like the old DOS style interfaces - and is very non-intuitive and difficult to navigate. You have to take several steps to figure out how to perform the most basic functions.
3) The software is unreliable. In the first 3 days I've had to uninstall and reinstall it twice (at Technical Support's direction) to fix problems. Additionally it lost the thumbnails for one of my albums with nearly 250 photos and Technical Support could only offer that I delete it and try to recreate the album. This was half a weekend's worth of work.
4) The funtionality it does have is very basic and common to all software in this category. In addition, half the options lead you to a screen to order products and services from SnapFish. The free version is worth it but the Deluxe version is not worth a dime.I foolishly paid $59.95 for it without checking out the reviews first because of SnapFish's recommendation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Serial Number Worked
I was debating on purchasing this, as 2 people wrote the serial number did't work, but it was only 12.00 after the rebates and nero.com had it for 39.00 to download and another 12.00 for the disk. Took me 3 tries to get the serial number right what I thought was an I was actually a one and it worked fine. Glad I purchased this was a great price with the 2 refunds.

1-0 out of 5 stars Rip Off
I, too, bought this software as a Christmas gift.My friend was never able to install it because the serial number on the CD Sleeve was not accepted. We sent several emails and got absolutely no response.I will never buy another Nero Product! What a waste of $40.00 and a big disappointment for my friend!

1-0 out of 5 stars Do Not Buy This Product!
Warning - I bought this item as a Christmas gift for my father. He attempted to use the software to no avail. We had the serial number, but it required a password that we could not obtain. My father made numerous attempts to resolve this issue through Nero, however they were useless. It took days for them to reply, and the person replying had not a clue. In fact, they insuated that it was stolen, even when an amazon receipt was supplied. My father has had this software since Christmas - and he still hasn't used it.I must say Amazon.com has been great. They are going to reimburse my account and I am sending the product back to where it came from.

5-0 out of 5 stars Real easy photo software
This is one of the easiest softwares I've ever used for my digital photos. It allows me to edit my photos, add clip art and captions, and make slideshows. The best thing is I can email my slideshows to my family living throughout the U.S. So many features are available and anyone can use it, even my 7 year old daughter. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars getting much better, but still plenty of glitches
I've already reviewed this product, about a month ago, but since then the accuracy has improved dramatically, as it has learnt to recognise my speech. I often speak sentence after sentence with hardly a correction. Most of my gripes still apply though. And it seems to have good and bad days -- probably affected by microphone position among other things.

I use it less select half the time, to avoid voice strain. But when I have a lot of typing to do it's a great relief for my hands, and quite good speed.

One annoying thing, which I didn't mention before, is when it repeatedly makes the same mistake when trying to correct a word. For example I said " hi Sandra" which it rendered as "bystander".When I selected this it did not offer the correct option so I spoke again and this time got "high Sandro". I selected Sandro, and said Sandra (as Sandra was not on the list of options), and the program typed Sandro, or centre, again and again until I used the spelling tool."Hi" also took a few attempts. My point is 1: the list of options often neglects obvious ones, and 2: if I've already rejected Sandro and centre for this occurrence of this word, the program should be able to remember that and not just repeat those mistakes.

(for reference, I'm using the Australian module.)

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
It often writes absolute nonsense -- a decent grammar check of the kind that Microsoft Word has had for years would eliminate about half of that, and it pathetic that Dragon has not included this already. (Example: with a grammar check, it would have detected that "it pathetic" is not something I likely to say, and would have tried a different option like "it's". See? there it is again, "I likely".)

And if I say "select that" to bring up the correction menu (which often doesn't work, but anyway...) and wanted to choose item number four, I say "choose four"... but instead of putting in the fourth option, it types "choose for" or "choose four" or "shoes for".

These are minor example.Examples.Often the mistakes a much more dramatic. Are much more dramatic.

Love got a lot of effort... try again: although I go to a lot of effort to try and train the program, the accuracy is still very disappointed.(Disappointing!) It's generally much slower than typing because I spent so much time going back to correct mistakes.

And the Dragon Pad editor is not very good - can't do multiple undos (ie go back before the last edit).

Conclusion: Not good enough! Get it together, Dragon!

I'll give it two stars though because it believed it has ["at least it has"...i gave up and typed this]a module for non-US accent.Accent.Accent.Accent.Accent.Accent.Then.Damn. Accents.

I still use the program about half the time that I work catered computer... workout for...workout for... work at the computer, because it does relieve the strain on my hands and wrists. But not all the time because data does give me voice strain. I'm sure the voice strain would be much less if I could just dictate without constantly having to go back and give edit commands (or give the same command 6 times before giving up).

By the way some tips to prevent voice strain are found at: (...)

5-0 out of 5 stars I'm pleased...
I have been using this software about a month. The improvement in accuracy has been nothing short of amazing. Yes, like other reviewers who have had good results, I spent the time and patience it took to train the system. I'm just a little annoyed that ScanSoft has recently dropped the price of its Preferred version, and not offered those of use with the Standard version an opportunity to upgrade at a reasonable price. But, as I build the recognition vocabulary, and since I don't work with Microsoft Office apps (I use Text Pad to review the spelling and spacing of the dictated materials), I'm not sure that the higher-priced version would have been that much more useful, given my work habits.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Boon for Carpal Tunnel Sufferers
I'm a direct response copywriter, which means that I often have to key in great quantities of text.Unfortunately, I am also a sufferer of carpal tunnel syndrome.

Although I've only had this program for a few days, I find it has taken a lot of the stress out of inputting copy.

As another user suggested, it seems best to dictate the words, and use your mouse or keyboard for formatting.

The program works very well with e-mail and word processing. But as an added bonus, it seems to give you control over most functions of any Windows program!

For example, when your desktop is on the screen, you say "open Microsoft Word," and the program opens.Whoah, beam me up, Scotty! I would imagine that this program could be very useful to people with injuries or disabilities, not to mention "lending a hand" when your hands are full.

The program does make some recognition errors, but then I do suffer a bit from marble-mouth myself.Fortunately, it's easy to correct mistakes by selecting the words in error, and then saying the correct word or selecting one of the choices the program presents you.

Surprisingly, the program invites you to speak at your normal speed. Not to slow down as some earlier dictation programs forced you to do.There are also some passages they give you to read into the supplied headset microphone to improve the accuracy of the recognition.

They say it takes about two weeks to optimize the program for your speaking pattern.I find the other challenge is simply getting used to dictation; as a touch typist and self-employed individual, I'm not accustomed to dictating documents to a secretary!

The only reason I'm not giving this program five stars is because of the developer's stingy user support, as reported by other users here. When are manufacturers going to learn that it is imperative to provide a toll-free number for customers to call with product problems, and that customers should NOT be charged for the privilege either?

Still, until another developer creates a product as good as this, NaturallySpeaking is probably the only game in town.

2-0 out of 5 stars See for yourself!
Okay, how did you people get this thing to be in the least bit accurate? I am now typing this review in dragon pad to see how it fares.I just finished transcribing to interviews, and got the most ridiculous results. Oddly enough, this is coming-out far more accurate, then, the interviews granted it is making grammar mistakes. But that's to be expected. It seemed that he can't keep up with me when I talked very fast see, like that.I speak very clearly and actually have been a public speaker. So I know that it's not that I mumble, or I'm not articulating enough.I think that if all one wanted to do with this was to tie thousand e-mails and perhaps right out letters were speech is that might be fine. But using it to transcribe quickly has been a nightmare.I and purposely not going back and correcting any of this.So you can see what it really looks like tie thousand should have been typed in some.Type in some.Off yes, if I speak like a robot sometimes it works, but not always.Off yes, should have been to ah I give up.See what I mean?

i think this is the best via voice. i had the old one it did not work i had to pronounce hard words that i dont know. over all the new one rocks

5-0 out of 5 stars An outstanding product!
I'm not typing this review. It is being dictated directly into the space using theibm ViaVoice simply dictation for Mac OS X.(the failure to capitalize is due to my lack of familiarity with the software, not the software itself)
As you can see, this is pretty easy to use! In fact I juststarted using it at about 30 minutes ago.It took about an hour to train the system to my voice and set it up.I've had many years of experience in dictating to tape recorders and to live people, so my technique may be more consistent with what the dictation software expects than yours. All in all this seems to be a very useful tool particularly for people who dictate versions of the same letter on a daily basis. The software allows you to train it to words that are specific to your work and also to capture "Macro phrases" that might include entire paragraphs of text.
I would highly recommend this software to anyone who has had experience in dictating for transcription. This is not for everyone as some attention to articulation and phrasing is necessary in any dictation, computer or human. If your willing to speak clearly and distinctly to your friendly computer this software will enable you to do exactly what I've done: to transcribe a paragraph without having to touch a key. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Outstandng product
I receive my ViaVoice software last night one day after I ordered it.Amazon told me it would get here in seven to nine business days, but it came the next day.Hats off to Amazon for quick delivery. Thirty minutes after I opened the box, I was dictating on my Macintosh using ViaVoice.I took the time to go through two of the training lessons, and the more I read to ViaVoice the better it got at recognizing my words. Now, after only a few hours of working with ViaVoice, my dictations are almost one hundred% error free.I wholeheartedly recommend ViaVoice to anybody who is looking for a dictation package for the Macintosh which is price effective and easy to use.By the way, this entire review was dictated to ViaVoice.I left in the few errors and that it made so that you could see how effective is.

1-0 out of 5 stars Save your money!
I purchased ViaVoice for Mac Enhanced version and immediately had problems with it. Foolishly I upgraded to ViaVoice for Mac OS X, release 3, and thought the problems would be over. I was wrong. This software has very poor overall performance. It slows, hangs and freezes at the drop of a hat. There is no rhythme or reason to the freezes. I've tried stoping and restarting, reloading, various combinations, and it never seems to work properly. Being a Mac Addict since 1986 I think I know a thing or two about this system. It's not a user issue, it's a software issue!

1-0 out of 5 stars Wrong Product for panther
I can't get the microphone to even record.I think this version is incompatible with Panther, orI may have a faulty product.I am a very experienced Mac user and actually read manuals and web sites for support. It's possible that the correct product is actually IBM ViaVoice for Mac X USB, v. 3.It's a $30 upgrade from this version. Neither Scansoft nor Amazon makes this clear from looking at this page!

To give this product a fair review, it needs to be repesented correctly on this site as not being the latest version for Mac.

If I am wrong about this, I will correct it in a further review very soon.

1-0 out of 5 stars Has never worked well in OS X
Due to a spinal cord injury, my hands do not work. Obviously, typing is difficult, especially extended word processing. I use my computer 8-10 hours/day for work, email, etc., and frequently need to type more than a few lines. So, Viavoice seems to be the obvious choice for me. I have owned viavoice and each upgrade since the first version. Despite updates, this program has never worked well on OS X. On a few occasions I have gotten it to operate briefly, but usually it crashes, fails to open, does not respond, or dissappoints me in some other way.

Training the program is a long process, and the fact that I cannot use it now is ridiculous. I consider myself a mac expert, and use many programs. I have never been more frustrated with a program than I am with this one. Support is poor, and updaters are few-and don't help.

Save your money and more importantly your time-don't buy this program.. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Stick with the older NAVs
Both my wife and I purchased this software near the end of 2004.At first, many of the "features" were just an annoyance, and I assumed that I would gain experience with them and move on.That never happened.
While online one day, Internet Security mysteriously disabled itself.I immediately got off the internet, but was unable to reactivate the program. After trying everything I could think of, including unistalling and reinstalling the program, I contacted Symantec. They advised, via email, me to do all the things I had already done (by the way, their online automated help is abysmal). This had the predicted result of not solving the problem.A clean boot and registry edit later, the program was still not functioning. At this time, my Outlook had ceased functioning until I removed the program, and several other programs on my machine returned errors stating that they had encountered problems and "needed to close".Prior to Internet Security crashing on me, I had never seen this error before.I found it distressing that the program designed to prevent any kind of Internet attack was also giving me this error.
I did some searching online and found a couple articles that said that Internet Security had been found to have a bug that allowed hackers to disable it over the web.Symantec assured me that this was not true.In the end, I completely removed the program and that solved most of my woes, however I am still recieving the same strange "this program has encountered a problem and needs to close" error with Adobe Distiller, and occasionally with other programs, however, only the Adobe Distiller seems to be completely fatally affected.
My wife has had problems with her Internet Security, and has also found that disabling it is the way to go.Fortunately, her's did not die completely as mine did.
Bottom line is, from my viewpoint, beware of this program.I never had any problems with earlier NAV versions, and I will be returning to them, although I was rather soured on Symantec as a whole for having produced such a faulty program.

2-0 out of 5 stars Effective, but VERY bulky
While it has a rather effective firewall, and comes with Norton Antivirus (which I'm actually rather fond of), the Security Suite has significantly slowed down my system. I'm currently using a Sony Vaio S-150 (which I bought at the end of this past August), and it takes about five minutes just to boot the system - in fact, I've taken to just hibernating, rather than shutting down completely.
The Antivirus is good, but "Internet Security" just isn't worth it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Voted With My Feet
After months of frustration with NIS 2004 and Symantec's pitiful tech. support, I finally threw in the towel. Went with PC-cillin Internet Security 2005 and am happy that I did so. The PC-cillin UI isn't as refined as NIS's but - you know! - the product works, the Anti-spam component integrates nicely with Outlook, and etc... No compatibility issues and my machine is running noticably quicker.

With any luck, I'll never have to be concerned with the quality of TrendMicro's tech. support. In any event, it couldn't possibly be worse than Symantec's. Here's Symantec's version of how to fix the Visual C++ Runtime Error for the AntiSpam plugin, so well documented in other customer reviews and on the Web:
1) Rename MSOUPLUG.DLL to MSOUPLUG.OLD. Trouble is, that's not a fix; it simply prevents the error message by disabling the very plug-in you were trying to fix.
2) Do a LiveUpdate for NIS 2005. Trouble is, I was running NIS 2004.
3) Remove and reinstall NIS 2004. A painful procedure that, in the end, doesn't work (and they know it).
4) Upgrade to NIS 2005. (Yeah! Right!)

Um... NIS 2004 a bad product. Very bad. Read the reviews here before you buy; we can't ALL be lying...

1-0 out of 5 stars Killed my Internet Access Speed
Loaded this suite on a newly built PC: AMD Athlon64 512Mb RAM, WinXP Home, running broadband cable - connection speeds were slower than my dialup while I had the program loaded.Uninstalled and PC ran like a champ... excepting the junk Symantec left on my PC... Couldn't fully uninstall since it had hooked nearly every program I had installed.Ended up having to reload Windows to get the machine to run without error and at optimum speed.

Would NOT recommend this program. It was a waste of my time and money.

1-0 out of 5 stars NIS 2004 - Total Garbage
Without repeating all the problems reported by other reviewers (I have experienced most of them and more) suffice it to say that amazon should take this off of their shelf and refuse to sell it. It is utter and complete garbage - I have never seen any software that behaves so poorly or is so poorly supported. Symantec / Norton should be ashamed of this product and should send a refund to all users of it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Thanks to IBM Viavoice my expectations were low!
Seriously, this product is 1000% better then IBM Viavoice.I coul not even dictate in word with that nightmare of a program.

With this program I did the minimal training, and it works great! It actually does what it claims it can do (unlike IBM Viavoice).

5-0 out of 5 stars Just what you need with no frills.
The 'Essentials' version of Dragon Naturally Speaking 7 (DNS) has the core features but none of the extras. There is really no point in getting the 'standard version' over this as the standard version only has four extra features that you probably would not use much, if at all, anyway.

What matters here is that the speech recognition engine in DNS is excellent and quick to set up and use, and the core speech recognition engine is the same for all the DNS 7 variants. The time you put in through use to train it is time well spent, and you can speak at a normal pace with very high quality results.OK, if you try to use it in a noisy environment you will get problems, but use a bit of common sense and patience and you get great results.

If you want to use DNS with a dictation machine then you have to go for the 'Preferred or Professional' versions, likewise if you want to have your words read back to you (text to speech)But if you just want to do the basics such as dictating letters, essays, memos, or email, then DNS Essentials has all you need.

If you are spending your own money and don't really need the advanced features then go for DNS Essentials, if it is someone else's money, or you really need the extra advanced features then get the preferred or professional.Of course it helps to have a fast PC with more memory than the minimum specifications too! ...
