Worked okay until I installed XP Service Pack 2.Now I can no longer scan using my Brother MFC-9700 and Paperport 9.It has been a long time since Service Pack 2 was released, and Scansoft has left everyone who bought Paperport 9 in the cold.I could not care less if they now come up with software that is compatible with SP2.This kind of treatment of customers makes it clear that they do not deserve our business.Don't take my word for it.Google the issue, and you'll find out that there are a lot of dissatisfied customers.From now on, I'll avoid Scansoft.

I was very excited to get this product.It scans well, files well, is very sexy and promising.Then I decided to Search for a few files based on my Keywords.Oooops!It won't search!!
If you don't know already, PaperPort offers you only one free tech support call.After that it's $20 a pop.The rather surly technician I reached had me re-install my program.Okay, but it still wouldn't search.Then he told me to un-install Windows Service Pack 2.Uh uh, no way.Nada.That's when I asked for a refund.
I bought MyCab for $40.Tech support is marvelous, within one hour over the Internet.The only thing it doesn't do is scan within the program, but then I can do that, can't I?

I have used both Paperport 8 and Paperport 9 Deluxe for over a year so I am qualified to report.

Both pieces of software have some form of severe incompatibility with Windows XP Pro.

I cannot really get version 9 to operate.Everytime I try its like cold molasses.Click...wait....wait....wait...wait...and then lock up.

I'm very experienced.I've been working with PCs since 1991.Every other piece of software I've loaded works very well...except for Paperport 8 and 9.

In theory Paperport 9 should be fine because it converts all scans to PDF which is more or less a universal file format.However theory is a lot better than reality.

Support is nonexistent from ScanSoft.If you pay the $19.95 per incident, you still do not get a solution.

The ScanSoft forum is always either not working (another bad sign) or it's full of people complaining about the software and lack of support.

Unfortunately there are not a lot of alternatives, but doQments looks promising.

Avoid Paperport unless you have money and time to waste.

I needed a document management system. After looking for software, there only appeared to be Paperport.

I had read somewhere that the software becomes incredibly slow with a large number of files. I guessed a large number meant 2500+ at least.

This concerned me, so I called pre-sales at ScanSoft, and asked if it was slow with a large number of files. He was not sure! So he told me to call technical. I called technical, and it his responses were very slow and sounded like he was reading them out to me. I asked if he was reading the ScanSoft website and he said yes, so I hung up. Obviously I read their site for an answer, and did not need to be paying international call charge for someone who seemed less knowledgeable than myself to read it.

I got the software. Basically all the software consists of is windows explorer and scanning software. It worked well, and I thought OK, expensive for what it is, when Windows Explorer and scanning software (usually free) would nearly do most of it, but THEN after around 560 PDFs, it started running VERY slow.

I thought it was my machine so installed it and the PDFs on a new Vaio 1.7Mhz, 1 gig laptop. Same problem. If you click to view the PDF then hit the return back, it takes 12 seconds! So if you view a document, it takes a good few seconds but then when you hit back to the Paperport Desktop to continue it takes 12 seconds!!! Completely unusuable!

If you have less than 500 files, it is maybe expensive software, but for more than 500 do not waste you money. It runs so slow you can not use it. I wonder how ScanSoft get away with it - surely they should have tested it internally with thousands of files. ... Read more

I recently purchased this software from Amazon, and I've been experiencing technical problems from the moment it was installed on my computer. I am using the program at work, on my brand new Dell system, and it just won't act right! The print preview function creates error messages, and when I printed my resume the software placed weired lines and boxes on my resume.I've contacted tech support, and they are unsure as to what the problem might be. They've asked me to switch printers, remove the software, and then install the software. We've been going back and forth for about 2 weeks. I've used a previous edition of Resume Maker and I had technical problems with the software, but I assumed it was because my computer was a bit older.
As for the content of the software, I do feel that it offers some useful information. You are provided with a resume coach, with tips on the types of resume that may suit you. I'm giving this product 3 stars because of the quality of the software.

I was very disappointed by this software. Sure it has some good features (that's why I gave 2 instead of 1) but the built in word processor is terrible (Nope, I was not expecting another MS Word but at least expected consistency between various features/parts of the software).

One of the supposedly great features of Resumemaker is the ability to preserve some general formatting if you choose to (e.g.) send the resume as plain text (an important thing mind you) in an e-mail. It does so by offering a number of styles for formatting your Resume.

For example, for the Summary section, you can choose a bulleted list as formatting style. Resumemaker would create one card for each bullet item you create. If you send the Resume as plain text in an e-mail, Resume maker would format each of these bullet items with a * in front. This is all nice and good, but for Rich Text Formats, you lose the ability to highlight individual words/phrases (you have to highlight the whole bullet!) So, for MS Word formatted resumes, you just cannot have bold words/phrases that call attention (I want to note here that if your style is paragraph, Resumemaker would allow highlighting of individual words or phrases).

InfoPath is an awesome product that allows the creation of electronic forms quickly and easily.

When combined with InfoView from Unique World Software (www.uniqueworldsoftware.com) which converts InfoPath forms into ASP.NET forms then it forms a powerful solution to create web forms.

I would have to say this product is pretty amazing. However, to use it to it's full capability would require you to have a robust Active Directory, Windows 2003, Sharepoint Portal Server, Exchange 2003, SQL Server 2000 and a ton of trained end users.

The biggest downfall is that there is no viewer availiable so any forms that you create using Infopath will require the client PC to have a copy/liscensed version... You do the math. =) ... Read more

If you'd still like proof that the average human mind doesn't think in any manner resembling a computer's processor chip (even those computers we love that help us "think different!"), attempt to comprehend the challenge in how a computer "reads" a sheet of paper.

You and I read an article in the newspaper, skip over to a eye-catching advertisement, pull out our wallets and exchange business cards, and all the time, we have learned to scan the item of interest, pick out those words that are important, discard the rest as unnecessary, and go about our busy lives.

But not a computer.A computer lives for those details.And those same details can mire a processor down.

Which in a way is why the Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software engine used by ReadIRIS Pro 9.0 is a delight to work with.The people behind the software have helped to link the scanned data into basic patterns and formats ever so much more useful to the daily lives of the user (me, in this case!)

I initially looked into this review by getting my hands on the Business Card Reader (BCR) device, in this version, roman number II, so that I might make my life easier by managing the growing pile of business cards that I collect, and have collected over the past decade, and expect to continue to collect well into the future.

There is something wonderful indeed about business cards, especially in how succinct the summary of a person's relevance.But I digress away from attempting to deal with this growing pile of cards.

Card files don't seem to work for me.But I have enjoyed manually inputting some of my more frequent contacts into Address Books (both Apple's version and Microsoft's Entourage version.)So it seemed an obvious step to begin to input the business cards using a Business Card Reader!

I will warn you -- skip the software that comes "standard" with the current Business Card Reader II.An upgrade is promised, but in the meantime, consider using another ReadIRIS product -- Pro 9.0 (in my case, I tried the corporate edition).

ReadIRIS Pro is a joy to work with.The install was smooth and easy.The software engine (with all files and reference information) installed in less than 80 megabytes.I thought that quite good, especially with how the software promised to handle so many different fonts and language styles.

I tested the software with both a Hewlett Packard scanner and the BCR device.Switching between the two was very quick.I can see how the OCR software could pay for itself due to some of the vast amount of reference materials still unconverted to digital format (the software outputs in text, rich-text, html and pdf formats).Keep in mind however to put aside some time to proof your new documents against the old.If you have a set of material which needs OCR review, one of ReadIRIS Pro 9.0's benefit's shines -- the work you do to input corrections into a dictionary format can help similar documents in basic recognition of font and language skill.

In order to get back to my original project of dealing with my card piles, I was able to get cards read into Entourage's address book in an average of 3 minutes per card.I'm not too quick at typing, but I might have entered them only slightly faster just by doing it all manually.But -- I haven't done this over time.And, I was sort of mesmerized by watching the scanner process my business card stack.That is the fast part.The other portion of the three minute average was spent looking over the scanned data (automatically exported from ReadIRIS Pro 9.0 into Entourage) and "proofing".I was very impressed by the quantity of correct data, even with "pretty" photograph enhanced business cards.

My business card organization project will be ongoing.But now I have a much better tool set.

I definitely recommend the Iris Business Card Reader, but I also recommend contacting the company to see when the enclosed version of software is upgraded, since I didn't benefit from the full corporate version of the software at the listed price. ... Read more

I do a great deal of OCR in my research and have scanned tens of thousands of FineReader 6 (FR6). I have also tried every other OCR software that is available for PCs. There are other good packages that can serve some needs adequately, but for my work, FR6 is superior in every respect. In particular it is substantially better than the most popular OCR program, OmniPage Pro 12, as well as quite a bit less expensive. Others might have different preferences depending on what they do and what their equipment and software are.

The bulk of my scanning/OCR involves academic articles and historical materials. For the most part I produce PDF files, although I also scan some tables to produce spreadsheets and do some scanning to Word files. Depending on the quality of the original and my precise purpose I may make a PDF with an image and hidden text, an OCR text file, or an OCR text file with images of uncertain words. I use an HP 7450 scanner connected to a Windows 2000 system with a 1.8 GHz P4 processor and 512 MB of RAM.

On this system, FR6 is quite speedy and normally can perform recognition as rapidly as the fastest of desktop scanners will scan. It offers a choice of a fully automatic mode, partly automatic modes, or a very wide selection of user-specified modes. New users will get very good results on most material using the automatic mode and can learn to use its more powerful features as their needs dictate. Even in its automatic mode FR6 is superior to other packages in recognizing difficult text, speed, tools for correcting errors that do appear, and flexibility of output.

One notable and important strength of FR 6 for my purposes is its ability to deal with the many superscripts, subscripts, and special symbols in the typical academic article. FR6, by contrast, gives reasonably good accuracy with such material and makes it easy to correct the mistakes that do crop up. Very often I can scan an entire 20-page article and find not a single mistake.

As I say, there are other products which will no doubt serve many people well. If something else comes free my advice would be to try it and see if it fills your needs. However, if you find you need something better, FR6 is the clear choice.

If you do have another product be sure to see if you qualify for a "competitive upgrade" to FR6 at an even lower price...

Recently ABBYY has brought out version 7.0, which for some reason Amazon carries only in the expensive "corporate" edition, intended for networked operations. The improvements over version 6.0 include somewhat better recognition accuracy; manual control over page splitting; ability to read PDF files, edit, and re-save the edited file in PDF or another format; and improved editing tools. It is definitely worth getting version 7.0 rather than 6.0, but it appears that you have to go to some other vendor than Amazon to get the consumer-oriented "professional" edition.

The FineReader OCR package performs as advertized. I required a package that worked with other alphabets and FineReader fit the bill. I was able to perform OCR on faint 9.5 point Czech typeface with no training -- and I got Czech spell checking to boot.The package is so simple that I failed to read the manual for the first week of use, then when I finally read it, discovered all kinds of OCR aids built into the package. The FineReader does everything I need and more. What's more, you can download a fully operational package and use it for two weeks to be sure it does what you want.

Integrates well with Word. Works well under both Windows 98 and Windows XP Professional edition. Using with Mustek Bearpaw 1200 USB scanner with no problems. Marked improvement over the TextBridge software that came with the scanner. Works well with both photos, handwriting documents, and typed documents. Would highly recommend this product for both home and business use.

I haven't used any other OCR software packages except the one that came with my scanner.Abby FinePoint is, obviously, far superior.So far, I've had good results.Tables aren't as automatic as I'd like, but things have been moving more and more quickly.It's fairly easy to format tables and graphics.I also like that it doesn't put whole pages of text in text boxes.This was one of the main reasons I decided to upgrade.It was making it difficlut to flawlessly merge multipage documents.Abbyy FinePoint is far better.

A couple of things that were't clear to me:
The Presto! OCR 4.0 that CNET recomments is made by Abbyy and is based on their v. 3.0, so you might as well go with the Abbyy 6.0....

You can buy the upgrade is you have ANY OCR software.I upgraded from the version of Presto! that came as Epson Smart Pannel.That makes this package a great deal.

Software loaded OK, but scanner pen failed to be recognized by the software on all of the five USB ports on my emac and ibook.

So I called customer service and spoke to some guy named "Jessie." I told him about the scanner pen, he asked for the pen batch#, and said, well, you can return it to Amazon or I can send you a new pen. I'm a patient guy, I wanted to give the product a fair shot, so I asked for a new one. It never arrived, and I even called three weeks later and some other guy said, oh yeah, that pen will arrive today. It never arrived. Nothing like customer service types who will lie in order to get you off the phone.

The only good news here is that Amazon accepted my return and gave me a full refund. So if only IRIS could emulate Amazon's customer service philosophy, maybe they'd sell a few more pens, instead of antagonizing once interested customers.

Maybe I'll try the C-Pen next. ... Read more

I have a paperless home now, thanks to PaperPort Deluxe. I've used it since the early versions.

I scan all of my bills, and store them electronically.

However, I recommend getting version 9. The primary file type documents are stored in is the propriatary MAX file format and extension.Version 9 has a PDF file generator, and the MAX file viewer may eventually go the way of the dinosaur.Only this company's products use it, and it's not directly supported in Windows.Company mergers and buyouts happen all of the time, but I have a feeling that PDF will be supported for many many years to come.Version 8 will store MOST PDF files, but won't generate them from scanned pages. Some encodings of PDF files will for some reason not open in version 8.Version 9 seems to handle them all.

If you only want to keep papers short term, this version is more than adequate.But if you're looking at 5-20 year retention, then you really should get the version 9 for the PDF capability. I say 5 years is critical, because future versions of Windows may eventually stop supporting this version of the program.For example, this software will NOT load on Windows 3.1...and may barely load on Windows 95.Operating systems do move ahead, and companies often just release new software to keep up.

I have used Paperport for years.It is an outstanding product with wonderful features.Version 8.0 Deluxe is the best yet and worth the upgrade.Unfortunately, in spite of some nice new features, there are some old things that don't work anymore or have been put in out of the way places so they are no longer readily accessable.In spite of that I am happy with the upgrade to 8.0 because of its improved robustness.

As a new user, be aware that there are also certain bugs and usability problems that never get fixed.And occassionally they re-arrange the user interface for the worse.Why they can't put functions that I use a lot on the toolbars or allow customizable toolbars, I'll never know.There is a long list of suggested bug fixes and wish list features I sent them years ago, none of which have been addressed.

They don't really seem to listen to the user community or to make changes other than to add "features" that they can use to sell new users or encourage upgrades (typical software company).

That said, the core feature set is worth having.I consider it a necessary piece of software, in just the same way a Word Processor, Spreadsheet, Web Browser, Email reader are necessary.This is a Document Storage and Filing system.

You can store scanned documents in PP. It has a builtin OCR engine.You can print documents to PP (ie. print a web page you want to always have offline into PP via a "dummy" printer).You can just drag a Word or Excel, etc document into PP.You can stack and unstack pages.Straighten scanned pages (others don't need it).And you can store photos (jpgs, gifs, tifs, etc). It also has some ok photo manipulation, cut and paste, crop, etc type of features.

I am upgrading from Pagis scanning software produced by the same company. I decided to upgrade to Paperport 8.0 last week (3/10/03) Right after I got my copy I saw on the Scansoft website that a new version is out already, 9.0. An upgrade is listed as $....

The program works fine. Seems a little less powerful in some of the editing and file manipulation abilities of pagis. It works better with Windows XP. One glitch, it cannot directly import my Pagis files with an *.XIF format! I have read that the new version (9.0) has a pagis importer built in.

My overall comment: If you are upgrading from Pagis wait for version 9.0 to be widely available. So I now have to upgrade or buy the newer version to have XIF compatibility?

I upgradedtoPaperport 8whenI will upgraded to Windows XP.I have been using Paperport for many years.I keep hard copies very few documents.Other than my tax return, pretty much everything else is filed electronically.

I originally used PaperPort to organize my scanned documents but have found that it allows me to have a virtually paperless office.With PaperPort, you can create folders and subfolders just as you would organize a file cabinet.You can scan your documents to these different folders.Even better, you can select PaperPort as your printer and print directly to PaperPort.For example if you purchased something online, you would "print" the receipt to your designated PaperPort folder and never have to deal with a sheet of paper.You can similarly store downloaded items from the Internet, such as a bill or bank statement.You can electronically file any document from any application that allows you to print.

It's easy-to-use interface also allows you to drag the scanned item to different applications you might have, such as your faxing software, Outlook, or Adobe Acrobat. You can also use it to save a file into jpeg or other formats.

It is amazing software, really smart and pleasure to use. There are some things to improve to my taste, but overall it is definitely worth the money. In two hours of the actual using it appears by far more convenient that notorious MS Office. Extremely rich applications fulfilled by right tools. It is not overwhelmed with unneeded garbage but with smart and well organized things.
As one reviewer has mentioned it isn't Word. it is better. You don't have a filling that some one staying and breathing into your neck.
BTW, MS Word brought wrong habits and misleading conceptions, but if you know how to work , this one is much more productive tool.
All pieces well coordinated and inter working.
Very recommend. The interface a bit different and a few things to learn, but since you started to use it there is no way to back to MS Office. MS Office has more features in the same way as track has more horsepower, but will you drive it on vacation rather than coupe ?
One more thing to say, there is no any issues with MS Office compatibility. I converted many different documents and had no difficulties at all.

Let me make one thing clear: AppleWorks is not Microsoft Word. It is not Microsoft Office. And it is not a substitute for Word or Office, just as a Honda Civic isn't a substitute for a Hummer. It is, however, much easier to use, much less intrusive, and much less expensive. If you need Microsoft Office's features, by all means buy a copy. If you need to exchange files with Office users, it's probably a good idea to buy Office. But If you need to get work done quickly and easily, grab a copy of AppleWorks. All the modules (Word processor, graphics, spreadsheet, and presentation) are seamlessly integrated. Screen clutter is minimal (though the toolbars could be smaller.) Basic (and I stress basic) compatibility with Word and Excel files is included. But its strongest point is its ability to stay out of your way: it doesn't try to reformat your work to suit it's own ends, or make grammatical decisions for you, and the on-line help is helpful, not intrusive.

A great application.If you don't want to spend the extra money and get Office X then this is the application for you.It's very easy to use and has a lot of great features like templates and clip art plus, you can make your own templates and clip art.It has many features that Office X has except it doesn't have grammar check.That is the only draw back but half the time I never paid attention to it when using Office 2000 for windows so this isn't a big deal for me.I have converted many documents from Office 2000 to AppleWorks with no problems.I also use it for college and I have yet to feel the need to get Office X.Some other features it has are spell check, a word counter, and it can read back your documents to you!!Try it out.You won't be sorry!I use this application on an iBook running Mac OS X 10.2.4

I am a computer programmer and have been using MS Office since office 97 was released.I bought an Ibook 2 weeks ago in order to get away from the Wintel platform (and Linux too).The appleworks program is great it lets me create documents that MS Office can read and will also open MS documents.AppleWorks (as far as I can tell) has all the power of MS Office and is way easier to use.I have only been using it for a couple of weeks and can already create better documents faster using appleworks.I have not used the presentation part of AppleWorks yet but I assume its as good as the rest but, for presentations I reccommend keynote.

These tools are great. I had used the KnowledgePoint policy writing software years ago. Wrote an entire personnel policy handbook in an afternoon. And I knew nothing about HR or employment law!

So when I started a new company I looked for the latest version, I saw that they had bundled it into the Ultimate Employer suite. Now I have started writing job descriptions for my (4) employees and I plan to evaluate them using Performance Now. It's a great value and time saver.

These tools have helped me create a better work environment and, as we grow, it'll be easy to add new employees and make sure we're all moving in the right direction.

Five stars on quality of output, value and ease of use. Minus one star because the individual programs aren't fully integrated.

We've been using Goldmine after switching from Act! several years ago. Believe it or not, but back then, Goldmine was an elegantly written software, much more stable than Act!

But since then the featurelist grew, and so did the bugs! Goldmine has given our software department (and please note that we ARE a software company) nightmares. Especially moving from its internal database format to SQL server has been painfull to say the least. Although we do have a support contract, the local reseller refuses any serious help, because they just wants to sell us consultancy hours.

It's (16 bit aging Borland based) database interface cripples the performance of our SQL server from 9000 records/sec to about 20/sec. And despite modern server, network and client PC, performance is a laugh. The amount of crashes of the GM client make the situation barely workable.

If only we had an easy way to convert to another program, we would have abandonned this badly written and badly supported program years ago. Its a shame. Without the bugs it would remain our number one choice.

I admit, I've had to give GoldMine time to grow on me.It is powerful, but unless you know sql or dbase, OR you have money to invest in a consultant, it can be a little frustrating, especially on reporting tasks.I now LOVE GoldMine, and this is largely due to finding a few select add-on products to make my life easier.For example, MasterMine software totally solved for my reporting and analytical needs (a BIG gap in GoldMine!!).Buy GoldMine for your business (it works GREAT for financial professionals using seminar marketing models, and for managing a sales force) but do yourself a favor and buy MasterMine too!You'll be much happier with your CRM tool!

I have used many different contact management software systems in the past and Goldmine is definitely worth it's weight in gold!As an insurance agent, I have many customers who may have several different types of policies and I may send out many different types of marketing pieces based on my internal market research.Goldmine has allowed me to customize my database to gather specific information relevent to MY agency.It is not the easiest software in the world to learn but once I have invested the money in a good trainer, a world of options opened up.It's very easy to synch with Word or Excel and export client lists to labels or envelopes or form letters.It's great for running data-specific reports and has ultimately saved me thousands of man hours and money. More then worth it if you are willing to invest time and money into learning the system and all the customizable options.

After trying to use Goldmine for 6 months, I finally gave up and switched to Act.Sure, you can customize to your heart's content but it was too complicated and had too many "bells and whistles" to make it practical for me and my small business.I never did figure out how to print labels or use half the features, evern after hiring a private tutor to help me out.I had to type all my addresses into a separate file for labels, etc. before importing them. So why bother doing twice the work?I'm no techno-babe but this was just too much for me.I've had Act for a month now and use it all the time, much more user-friendly for me.

3-0 out of 5 stars After all these years I thought this product would be better
I've been a user of ACT software going back to version 3.0. Being in software sales, over the years most software vendors have adopted more souped-up CRM solutions such as Salesforce.com or Siebel or the like, so I can imagine the interest in this product category has been lacking. STILL, the feature set of this product hasn't changed much in the ten or so years sinced I used the earlier version. In fact, this product has become more bloated and buggy than any commerical software product I have ever used. I've considered listing all the bugs but it would be too long. But I will say this, other than a weird bug that sometimes mis-categorizes contacts into groups I didn't intent them to be a part of, the other bugs tend to be obvious use-ability type things. Bugs that a half asleep QA tester should've found.

Having said that, the positives are these: First, ACT! is nothing if not a good contact manager and task manager - nothing more, nothing less. I like being able to group contacts into multiple groups, and do pro-active email marketing to the members of specific groups - that feature works really well inconjunction with MS Outlook. In fact integration with Outlook and my PocketPC Cell phone is really exceptionjal. Integration with Word is also very strong. So, its this integration strength that keeps me booting this product up each day. BUT, if I was to purchase a product in this category again, I'd buy Goldmine (it wasn't on the shelf when I bought ACT! - my impatience!). Part of the problem with this product may be that its been owned by a number of different companies over the years. Best Software now owns the IP - let's hope they will issue bug fixes and then truly innovate this product in future releases. ... Read more
