4-0 out of 5 stars Server Basics 101
I just took on setting up my first small office network. We have four computers and a desktop that someone set up to run as a server. The 6 gig harddrive had long seen its time and needed to be replaced.I bought a Dell PowerEdge SC420, 4 Windows XP Professional upgrades (from Amazon at an amazing price and current rebate) and Windows Small Business Server 2003 (also at a great price).I've worked on PC's for years but never set up a office network with a server.I was very apprehensive and questioned my skill but this software honestly was ridiculously simple to install and deploy.

It guides you through the entire process step by step and I recommend it highly to anyone looking for their first server software.Of course it does have some very technical aspects that left me scratching my head but that's because I don't know what I'm doing.Setting up Sharepoint and Exchange will require some further reading on my part but shouldn't be that difficult to deploy.

I recommend this product very highly and didn't give it 5 stars because of my own inexperience and not being able to see what it can fully do.It also takes hours to install which is pretty typical for any Microsoft product.I did have the whole thing done in one Saturday though and it took about 8 hours altogether. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Outlook is good but it is not for everybody!
Outlook is a very powerful program that can do a lot of stuff but most users do not use more than 10% of Outlooks functionality. If you are one of these users I suggest not getting Outlook but look at some alternatives. For instance try Mozilla's Thunderbird email program. It is a very good email program with a lot of functionality and great spam protection. The best part about an alternative email program like Thunderbird is that it's free!Since Thunderbird is open source software anyone who wants to help work on it can.Thunderbird is worked on by millions of programmers around the world who want to use a better email program. It's user friendly and easy to install.Find it by doing a Web search for Mozilla Thunderbird.

2-0 out of 5 stars Still Looking For A Better Mouse Trap!
I have always given Outlook a second chance every time Microsoft comes out with a new version and some reason or another I end up switching back to something else.

I really like the concepts of having an "all-in-one" package for email, contacts, appointments, etc; But Microsoft needs to start paying more attention to detail on email functionality.

After using Outlook 2003 for about a year now, here are some annoyances that are driving me away from this product.

1.) Cannot add my own email filters and filter rules. This feature should be a given and my biggest complaint. Why do I need to rely on Microsoft to update Junk Email filters for me? Other email clients (Such as Netscape) allow me to add a filter for certain key words and an action such as "send to trash" if it encounters those key words.

2.) Junk Email features are a joke. Again, anchored on my 1st complaint, if junk email arrives in my inbox, I have to add the sender to the block senders list. This is fine if the sender always uses the same return address, but as you know with spammers, this is never the case. Also, Outlook waits to inform me that the email is junk AFTER I've opened the email.

3.) Too much security, and no control. Is there such thing as too much security? I believe there is if I can't control what I want enabled and disabled without a bunch of registry hacks.
Instead of Microsoft making the decision for me of what I can view or cannot view as an attachment, I would prefer to make that decision for myself.

4.) Favorite Email Folders is a stupid and useless feature and you can't get rid it. This window is just useless clutter, but yet again, we have no control of what's displayed in the outlook window. Enough said.

5.) Forwarded messages arrive as attachments, no way to change this. Another big complaint of mine. If a message was forwarded 3,4 or more times, I have keep drilling down through the attachments for each time the message was forwarded just to get to the original message. Ultimately you end up with x number of useless windows open cluttering up your taskbar and x number of windows I have to close once I'm done reading the original message. If a message was forwarded 4 times before it got to me, that's 4 times I have to double click an attachment and 4 extra windows open. It would be nice to have the option to have all forwarded messages contained within the same message body instead as an attachment.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not for people on dial-up
I think that this version of Outlook would be perfect if I weren't on dial-up: Outlook seems to be incapable of doing anything relating to your HTTP or IMAP email folders without checking the server, to the point that you can't even access them offline. The fact that Outlook has to check the server almost evrey time you do anything to your email can really be grating on dial-up. Maybe there's a way to stop the constant reference to the server, but I haven't found it.

It also has an annoying habit of locally replacing one of my two Hotmail accounts with the other, necessitating that I remove and recreate the "corrupt" account.

Seeing as how I don't use many of Outlook's other bells and whistles, I can't comment on the broader program, but apart from that signficant headache, it works fairly well.

4-0 out of 5 stars Need to fix PCS
Generally good, but two bugs remain from before:
1)Outlook PCS, which offers the only hope of exchangingwith a PDA contact date organized into subfolders, is so buggy as to be unusable.A little effort by MS could make it great.
2)Appointments still get totally screwed up if you change time zones on the computer.Have to work around by pretending that you're in your home time zone when you travel, but just change the clock time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Works Great
New interface and features are nice. I use OpenOffice.org instead of Microsoft Office, so a can't comment on the Microsoft Office integration.

Didn't notice any "AdWare" as stated by another reviewer.

I upgraded from Outlook 2000 and it went flawlessly. Found all my Rules, customized folders and Accounts without any setup.

Until the Open Source community provides an alternative on a Microsoft platform, I'll continue to use Microsoft Outlook. For $90.00, you can't beat it.

Thanks for a great product Microsoft. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Worked with ME, not XP
I used to use this software a good bit when I had WinME.The only real problem I had was with the answering machine.NO matter what I did, the recorded voice (mine, not the pre-recorded included) sounded as if it was speaking at half-speed.

I've now upgraded to WinXP and I can't get it to work.It installs fine, recognizes and initiates my modem, but it won't send out a fax, nor will it let me make any settings changes. It acts as if there is no phone line connected.

Also, good luck finding any support whatsoever. The original maker Communique, doesn't even list this product on their website.

Stay far, far away!

1-0 out of 5 stars Ever hear the phrase: Good in theory, bad in practic?
This software epitomises this phrase.I bought this software for its voice capabilities, and loew and behold, it has bugs, and it does not fully support my modem. In fact, it only supports 3 modems PERIOD.I wish I had known this before I gought it.Oh well.Do not make the same mistake.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great deal!!
Once in a while, I come across with products with great values at great price. This is one of them.My friend recommended that to me last month and I can't believe all the features it has at this price.First of all, it recognised my modem automatically without any problem and I can send/receive faxes immediately after this.

Unfortunately, my modem has no voice features so I cannot enjoy the voice features of this product yet.Even treated as a fax-only software, it is still a great deal doing the same as Winfax does at $60 less.

1-0 out of 5 stars Do Not Buy This Software
I also purchased this software because it was a good price and it seemed to have all of the features I was looking for. However, when I installed in on my computer to use it, it never worked.I am now out the money I paid for the software because you can not return opened software.I believe if the software requires special equiptment it should be listed on the box so that other comsumers don't waste their money on something that won't work with thier hardware.DO NOT BUY THIS SOFTWARE.

1-0 out of 5 stars DO NOT BUY THIS PROGRAM!!!
If I could this product would receive -5 stars. While it seems to install without a hitch, in actuality that is because it doesn't recognize your equipment and will not work. The authorized modem list consists of less than 12 modems and only one of those is a PCI modem, needless to say not mine.SO! It never got up and running, and being opened software it can't be returned for a refund. Caveat emptor. ... Read more

Been using this for around 1 year now and it crashes allot and when it does it doesn't hang up the phone line. This could be for hours or days depending if your on vacation or just out and about. Amazon.com Review

Have you noticed people don't talk about the future anymore? Perhaps we've caught up with it--we're practically living in the world of The Jetsons as far as information technology is concerned. Communicate! i2000 helps you step smartly into this futuristic present, with more communication options than Edison could ever have imagined.

Video phoning, Internet paging, and faxing are combined in one easy interface. Add audio and video snippets to e-mail, manage voice mail and fax scheduling remotely, and set up your own unattended bulletin board system (BBS), using regular phone lines or a dedicated Internet connection.

The learning curve is pretty gentle, too; while some of the newer or more advanced features might take some tweaking, you can jump right in and start making calls or faxes right away. Don't worry about translating your contact data from other programs, either--Communicate! i2000 offers plenty of import and linking features so you should be able to access any information from almost any software.

If you want to consolidate your communications software into one inexpensive, comprehensive package, Communicate! i2000 should be your first choice. When you're videoconferencing, reading e-mail, sending faxes, and on the phone with your stockbroker simultaneously, you'll wonder how long it'll take to get your jetpack and food pills. --Rob Lightner ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Multipurpose Communication Program
This the most complete professional communications program I have used in my 25 years of computer experience.Your computer becomes a fax/voice mail/video conferencing machine.

4-0 out of 5 stars it works just fine
some folks have had trouble with the product I see but if you have a modem that is compatable it works without problem- it took me a while to get everything set up because it is complex software but once working it gave me the equivalent of a good in office receptionist

But be sure to have a compatable modem before you start

1-0 out of 5 stars modems are unavailableor no longer supported
i have tried compro version 2 and had to go back to my old speaker phone and answering machine

so i upgraded to version 5
same thing ..bound and determined to make it work .. 4 modems
later (communicate points at the modems)

one modem manufacturers tech support told me to give up on the software and move on

being a little hard headed i hired a certified technician to come to my office to straighten it out, he removed sound cards, configured, re-configured, tried all 4 of the modems i had purchased, tried windows 98, windows me, downloaded drivers from obscure web sites, smoked a pack of cigarettes and left
scratching his head
so..before you buy this software, try to find a modem from the list at 01com.com look over the list very carefully to see if has the features you want
then try to find the modem. don't bother going to local super store they only sell current, supported hardware
it is not on the shelf i assure you
try the auctions
then..... try to find support for the outdated modem or updated drivers....
so it is back to the old answering machine i guess

1-0 out of 5 stars Sadly the worse purchase I 'ever' made...
I made it a point to come here and write this review. But one star is wrong... it should be 'negative' 5 stars! Perhaps I can spare someone else the nightmare that I endured.

I'm disabled and depend on phone communications to make a living.I wanted the best. After 3 months, 2 modems, at least 100 hours of frustration and a dozen emails to the support department -- this software sits on the shelf collecting dust!It is completely unusable. They assured me that it would provide basic phone functionality with my current modem (Creative Blaster) by email `before I bought it'... but it does not and `after I bought' they're story changed.

Hear's what you're buying: conversations fade out (you think the other person paused but no...), you must adjust the volume between dialing and talking or your ears will bleed (the dialing beep can be heard in the next city), it won't `beep' after the answering machine message (you have to add your own), it doesn't notify you when a message is waiting, if you link it to Outlook it zaps Outlook every time you look up a number, and on occasion it cuts messages off at 3 seconds... and there's more. The over all design is terrible, its hard to use and its completely over engineered.

'After' I bought it they said 'oh, won't work with that modem'.I switched to my 2nd PC which had 'approved modem' on their list... same thing!Which says to me that they would have me go out and purchase another modem and install it for nothing. The next thing they told me was, 'Oh, you must not use your sound card' - well, who needs multimedia anyway.BTW, freeware works fine with my modem and sound card... *freeware*!

Perhaps, if you work down the modem list and get just the right one, devote your entire sound system to Communicate! i2000 and devote the next 3 months of your life to messing with all this... you might be able to phone home!I never even got to try the other features.

Of course I'm beyond the refund period.I'm stuck, they won't refund my money (they got me!).Money truly wasted but it is the `time' I wasted on it that really cost me.

I'd sell it cheap but... I wouldn't do that to my worst enemy.

Yes... Commnicate! I2000's features sound so nice don't they -- unfortunately you need to press `redial' on this one and move on... as quickly as possible!

3-0 out of 5 stars Compatability Issues
I have yet to resolve the compatability issues with this software and the modem. Anyone interested in the software should contact the i2000 technical support team for a list of modems that are compatible with the software. Though the software boasts of the feature rich content. (which is why I purchased it for a small business ap out of my home). I will purchase a compatible modem and give it a shot. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars THIS SOFTWARE IS TERRIBLE!
I have just purchased the COMMUNICATE! software and quite frankly, I am extremely disappointed with the purchase! The set up process is cumbersome and complicated. Additionally, importing data is excruciating from the incomplete and poorly written included instructions. Unfortunately, the manufacturer (01 Communique) does not appear to offer a money back guarantee and once software has been opened it cannot be returned. If you are considering the purchase of fax software, I STRONGLY suggest that you spend your money on a different fax program!

1-0 out of 5 stars DO NOT BUY THIS SOFTWARE
I bought the Communicate 10.0 and I could not get it to work so the manufacturer had me try the i2000 version to see if I could get that to work.I downloaded the software and I could not get that to work either.I sent them the test information they asked me for and they told me that my modem was not compatible. He sent me a list of modems and there were only Three modems listed which were not listed on the box as hardware requirements. If you don't want to lose your money do not buy this software.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pretty cool!
I haven't been using the product for that long, but it certainly has all the bells-and-whistles, and they all work. It is picky about the modem it needs (requiring a modem that properly supports voice), but once running it is very slick! Answers my phone, allows me to do voice mail blasts etc. etc.

I would definitely recommend anyone try the 30 day trial. They have a newer product that allows remote access to your email, contacts, files and such (according to tech support anyway), but the remote access appears to be the only difference from this product ... and if it ain't broke! ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Ripped by Qualcomm(Eudora)
"This is the by far worst experience I've had with a software company.Eudora is a buggy and convoluted program and so is the way the company is run. Expect voice mail to hang up on you and email tech support to take 3 weeks.Upon discovering all of this I quickly requested a refund which I've never gotten. They emailed their "return request" form called "letter of destruction" (???) to me at an incorrect email address.Later, they got it right but when I snail mailed the form back to them they lost it and then would not refund me because it was past 30 days.Beware."

2-0 out of 5 stars Unreliable with high volumes of email, weak spam guard
Eudora 3.x and 4.x become unreliable with thousands of emails in the Inbox. The symptom is a message saying that the Inbox table of contents is corrupt, and offering to rebuild. If you say YES you will probably loose all your email permanently! The correct answer is to say no, exit Eudora, then use File Find to locate inbox.toc and delete this file, which will delete the table of contents but not the email. Then Eudora can recover.

Another suggestion that has improved the reliability for me is to have an automatic filter that copies all messages from Inbox into Inboxsafe, which might be slightly less vulnerable to corruption. The last suggestion is to make sure the boxes don't get very full.Don't take vacations :(

Regarding spamguard, there is no spamguard built in to Eudora.I have set up filters that detect and delete common spam, but have not been able to figure out how to automatically forward this spam to spamcop.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant system for any parent
I am glad to learn that Amazon started carrying KidMail, so I can give it as a holiday gift this year!

Since getting KidMail a few months back, my kids (5 and 8) have begun to correspond ENTHUSIASTICALLY with grandparents, aunts, and uncles. They love the bells and whistles in the software -- especially sending those cute Quick Messages -- from their KidMail.net address.

Meanwhile, I love how the KidMail system intercepts all the SPAM that flies around the internet...I know how to delete MY junk email but don't want my kids getting messages about increasing the size of certain body parts or those requests to hold 16 million from the Nigerian Treasury secretary, much less graphic (...)!!

Whenever I check my email from home or anywhere else, I get a convenient message if relatives or strangers TRY to contact my kids BEFORE they ever see it.I get to "mark" who is highly trusted, not trusted, etc.I can say whether messages go through automatically or I get a copy -- just to keep a tab on their communication.(To me, this is just the same as me not letting children answer the door when I don't know who is knocking.)

Highly recommended for any caring parent -- BRILLIANT! ... Read more
