1-0 out of 5 stars Installation nightmare
I installed NAS with windows XP and it would not work.
After several e-mails and phone calls to their support desk in India they had me delete all my Norton programs (pc anywhere and Norton Antivirus) and run some patches and delete files and delete items in regedit.
Now I get a 3 different errors when I start my computer, I can't do microsoft windows updates and Antivirus and antispam do not work. The support is very slow to respond and don't seem to know what they are doing.
I will probably have to reformat my machine and start again

1-0 out of 5 stars A waste of money, time and energy; crazy-making
Worked fine initially. Then it deteriorated. Took forever to enter a posting into Norton Antispam (to designate it as spam). Then inexplicably my e-mail on Outlook Express6 got very buggy. Finally, I started getting duplicates, triplicates and quadruplicates of the same spam with minor variations, endlessly; and Norton Antispam began precedingthe sender information in every incoming e-mail, including my professional listserv e-mails, with "[Norton Antispam]" (as shown here, in brackets). This resulted in my needing to delete the "[Norton Antispam"] when I replied to an e-mail posting. At one point I noticed that my listserv postings (professional group communications) hadvery sharply diminished in number. Ultimately, I found that Norton Antispam had-- apparently for my convenience-- segregated these into theNorton Antispam folder. There I found some 2,000 e-mails, all with "[Norton Antispam"] preceding the senders' addresses. Many of these were my professional listserv messages; others were the usual obnoxious scams and spams for which one purchasesantispam software; however, when I tried to click on the button that tells Norton Antispam that "this is spam," I found it to be greyed out, and NONE OF THE MESSAGES COULD NOWBE DESIGNATED AS SPAM, apparently because they now had been funneled to me THROUGH Norton Antispam, like a gift. (I was, however, given the option to click on the button to indicate that "this is NOT spam.")

The wrestling with bugs in my system went on for hours and days, beginning with my internet service provider, going to Microsoft (where, for a fee, they helped somewhat), and continuing with Norton. Norton's customer support was execrable. On the final day of my efforts to get help, at one point I was on the phone for more than an hour, on hold. Support staff seemed befuddled, clueless, and ready to repeat what another support person had done that was useless, despite my protests. I was prepared to pay the nearly $30 they asked for their "help," but balked when the last technician was ready to charge me an additional nearly $70 because, supposedly, a virus had gotten into my e-mail. I wasn't convinced; very recently Norton Antivirus had scanned my computer and found no viruses. I had to ask to speak to a supervisor because she refused to take "no" for an answer to this billing. Norton's other products have so far worked well for me, incidentally.

Finally, I disabled the Norton Antispam and deleted all messages with the "[Norton Antispam]" imprimatur. This has apparently solved problems for now, and I just "block sender" on the spam.

1-0 out of 5 stars Slow and Not Very Effective
It takes far too long for the program to block an email that you just received. It is not that accurate. I would not use it if if was free.

1-0 out of 5 stars Unbelievable That They Even Ship It
I can't even believe Symantec would ship this in the condition it is in. Further, if it is so important to them to have some kind of antispam software in their suite, I can't believe they haven't put lots of resources into fixing it via their live update feature.

Summary of the problems:
It doesn't work... It's not catching spam.

When you select a spam e-mail that it missed and tell it "this is spam" to train it, it is horribly slow... It just took an hour to process the 300 spams I received over the weekend.. This is on a 2.2 GHz machine, and task manager shows that CPU is the bottleneck... 100% CPU utilization for about an hour.

It is not correctly integrated with Outlook. Whenever it processes a message, it triggers Outlook to think it is a virus accessing your address list. The best you can do is to tell Outlook to let it have access for 10 minutes at a time. In other words, if you get more than about 30 spam messages, you actually have to wait around and do a three step process every 10 minutes to get it to keep processing!
NOTE: SpamBully and other products do not do this, so this is NOT an Outlook problem. It is a problem with the way that Norton Antispam talks to Outlook.

In short, a horribly flawed product that should not be shipping until these issues are fixed.

1-0 out of 5 stars DO NOT Buy This Crappy Software!!
There is a huge bug in this software and it will not work with Outlook. The Anti-Spam toolbar causes Outlook to shut down and an error message pops up.This happens every time you start Outlook for the first time of the day with a new user. The folks at Symantec have known about the bug for well over a year but refuse to fix it.They blame Outlook, but they are the ones who designed this software to (not) work with Outlook. This company obviously does not care about its customers and their problems.Next time I will buy McAfee or something and stay far away from this company. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Stick to the free FAX software that comes with Windows XP
I just uninstalled it after I got it going (after wasting about 8 hours fiddling).

Here are the main reason I could not work with it any more:

(1) Stability: I have Windows XP Service pack 2. And nine times the application just closed with 'could not read memory error'. Twice it just hung for no reason. When it does crash, it does not try to restart the application - so if you leave it running and go away, be prepared to miss a few FAX's as it might not be running when you get back! It is a while since I have seen an application that is as unstable as this and prone to crashes on a stable well built high spec computer. People tolerated cr*ap 10 years ago when it was acceptable to get the odd blue screens of deaths - but not now! I cant tolerate an application that does not close gracefully after a problem, nor give meaningful error messages so if there are any conflicts, it could be resolved.

(2) My modem is on COM port 9. The automatic software would not let me choose this port as it only listed port 1-4. I had to go into a lot of trouble to reconfigure my BIOS beore it will detect my modem.

(3)It had an SMTP setting which is supposed to forward FAXes to email. I could never get this to work, as the 'SMTP Server setup' dialogue does not have any authentication screen so I can type in my username and passwords for my outbound mail server. Cant belive the developer did not think of this - fundemental requirement for any MAPI / SMTP integrated application

(3) user interface is very 90's and not compliant with the new norm. So you have to spend time familiarizing your self - rather than things being intuitive. The skins were very amateurish.

(4) I tried to open my Outlook contacts - but it wont let me as it does not support the password feature in Outlook or MAPI client - again pretty fundamental and shows the application was not thought out. When I did remove the password in my Outlook to make it work, it did sort of work - but sometimes when I accidently select a contact whose FAX number is not correctly formated, the program would lock up.

(5) The features and functions are inferior to what you get in the free Windows Fax service that comes with Windows XP and the OCR features that comes with Office 2003. Why bother? It was a complete waste of my time - and I am so annoyed that I actually felt compelled to write my review about a product for the first time in my life in herehopefully saving the same agony I had to endure during the last 9 hours.

2-0 out of 5 stars unreliable software, looking for a replacement
I have been using the 4.0 version of this software on a Windows 98 platform for several years, with disappointing results. The fax does not work well when it comes to sending file attachments, sometimes resulting in annoying crashes. Logging the sent or received faxes is a big problem, as the fax viewer cannot open the faxes stored in a default directory that cannot be changed. Very recently I updated my Windows 98 with all the critical updates from Microsoft, and HotFax crashes the computer (very reliably!) every time I try sending a fax. Don't buy this product, find something better.

1-0 out of 5 stars Appalling experience!
After much research and what I thought was careful planning, I downloaded the software and found it would not work with my computer. To make it work would require a new modem for around $300.00. Tried to contact Smith Micro and they were "on holiday". Unfortunately, the time frame to return product expired while they were "on holiday" and they said it was too bad for me. Terrible customer service and I encourage people to do business with another company entirely.

1-0 out of 5 stars Hotfax Message Center
We had a hard drive crash, and lost our copy of Quicklink (and I couldn't find the original media anywhere.) I dl'd the demo, then purchased the new HFMC to install over the demo. The disk that Smithmicro sent was physically broken (they ship the CD in a flimsy envelope, no box) and when I asked for help getting my now-expired system up, they wanted me to send the broken one back before replacing (understand they had a credit card record of my original purchase) God forbid that you have any trouble with these guys. Their tech support is non-existant. They have one of the worst voice-mail-hell systems I've ever seen. I was absolutely furious by the time I actually got to speak with a human. And he was just useless.

I'm using this product to support a remote office call-in system and due to the above non-support, I finally had to buy another copy (downloaded this time) to get my remote ops back up. I feel like an extortion victim. I'll never buy from these guys again. Stars: one for product, ZERO for customer support. I am now searching for a replacement.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Product
This product will SAVE any small business a thousand or more dollars by using a computer and software rather than purchasing an expensive voice mail system.BRAVO to Smith Micro!
BTW, I purchased an early version (2.0) years ago, and it was very good then.I can't wait to start using 5.0! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Most recipients don't get the pictures
I was very disappointed in this product because, althought it does create beautiful email, less than half of the people I email it to can receive the pictures from this software. It basically renders the software useless for me.The manufacturer states on their website that this is a "very common situation."I quote from Novatix website:
"My emails don't have pictures. Is SendPhotos at fault?
This is a very common situation. You use SendPhotos to compose and send some emails, but one or more of your recipients receive emails that have no pictures in them. The area where the picture should be is either an empty box, a box with a red X, a blank space, a space with a text placeholder like [IMAGE], or just an empty area. This is not due to SendPhotos. It is due to the recipient's email viewer. There are several reason behind this problem.

The recipient's email reader doesn't know how to display HTML email. This is common in email readers published prior to 2000.The only two solutions are to replace the email reader with an newer one, or set up a free email account on Hotmail or Yahoo where the recipient can receive HTML emails.
The recipient's email reader is set to suppress the pictures in HTML email. This is a common feature in modern email readers, but is usually off by default.People use this feature to avoid seeing spam advertising, to protect themselves from porn spam, and to speed up the viewing of email. The only solution is for them to change the setting to show pictures. In most, if not all cases, once the setting is changed, when the email is reviewed it shows the pictures. In other words the setting doesn't affect the email, just how it is viewed.
The recipient's email reader takes a while to download and display the pictures.Emails with pictures are larger than normal emails and on a dialup connection it can take a while for the whole email to be downloaded. Some readers will start to display the email message and fill in the photos as they arrive.
Web based email readers sometimes reformat the email message. This is a variation on the problem.SendPhotos makes an HTML email which looks like a web page might look because it is using the same technology as browsers use to display web pages. However, when the recipient is viewing the email via a web-based email service, there is a conflict between the email content and the web page.To resolve this, all web-based email services reformat the email to display within their web page.In the process of reformatting, the email's appearance can change and the pictures can even be moved. In most cases, the pictures do show up. 4-0 out of 5 stars Very Impressive!
I was looking for some software to help a friend who is not a PC expert send photos by email. I found a review in the Wall Street Journal by Walter Mossberg that demonstrated this Send Photos could do the job.

I checked and found the original version on sale. However, I checked the Novatix web site and found a free download trial version and also an update: Send Photos Gold, for sale.

I tried the evaluation version - an 18MB download. Only try this if you have a broadband Internet connection! I installed it and it worked very well. I tried it first using Microsoft Outlook 2000 as my mail program. Configuring that led me to an process of installing Microsoft Collaboration Data Objects (CDO). I could not be bothered to find my MS Office CD so I took ther risk and installed it from the Novatix web site. I am always nervous about this kind of thing because Microsoft software is so complex and brittle, but so far it works and nothing else seems to have broken. The warnings about "do this at your own risk" gave me pause however.

The main point of the program is to enable "the rest of us" to email pictures easily. I was impressed that I could mail multiple high resolution photos from my digital camera and the software built a page containing compressed but still high quality images. Their compression algorithms are excellent and completely invisible.

I invited my non-expert friend to try the evaluation version. She installed it and used it with Outlook Express. Her first messages had the text but no photos which confused us. The problem was solved by closing and restarting Outlook Express and since then everything has been fine.

We tried some simple photo editing: cropping, adjusting brightness and so on. That is no problem and probably fixes 99% of all amateur photos. What a contrast in simplicity from, say, Adobe Photoshop Elements. A fine program in its way, but so complex! And this is the "simplified" version...

The other major feature is the stationery. I am old fashioned and go for the plain and simple look, but I am sure many will enjoy all the options.

Lastly we tried using it with Yahoo and Hotmail. Here Send Photos uses its own mail server to send the photos, but with a "sender" field that makes the message look like it comes from me. That's a clever solution to allow Send Photos to work with any email system, even if they are web based and use proprietary protocols. I have two concerns about this:

1. If Novatix goes out of business, their mail server will go away and that use of the program won't work any more. You'd still be able to use it with Outlook (Express) because there it uses your own mail server.

2. It seems to be possible to send photos on behalf of any user. This is because Novatix can't check the validity of an email address, nor whether I have the password for it. This seems to be dangerous and I did not see anything about it in the Send Mail otherwise excellent online help.

I heartily recommend this program for non-expert users.

5-0 out of 5 stars Email photos in a quick and fun way
I'm a mother of two with family out of the state and out of the country, and I'm so happy to finally have an easy way to share my photos with them.I'm not real technical and I'm still able to compose an email with photos (and comments for each one) in just a few minutes. The backgrounds ("stationery" themes) that you can pick from are fun and make me look like I really know what I'm doing! My son just got braces and minutes after we got home I sent the grandparents photos with SendPhotos, and they get to see them in their email just the way I sent them...no attachments to fiddle with...just fun pictures right in the email. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
Exchange is an excellent email server program. Running on Windows 2000 Server with all the service packs applied, it performs only as good as how its managed. The sever must have a VSAPI capable anti-virus and anti-spam software. Managing Exchange requires more than average network administrator skills and a good deal of knowledge of Active Directory. Additionally, Outlook clients can benefit from customizations and email anywhere via Outlook Web Access.

5-0 out of 5 stars No competition.
This is by far the best mail server available on the market - the Active Directory integration alone makes this worth the upgrade from Exchange 5.5. The Outlook Web Client, storage scalability and other enhancements make administration a lot easier for me, and keep my clients happy.

1-0 out of 5 stars Easily cripples network connections for novice users
I've done ISP tech support since 1998. Of all the firewalls I've seen the various versions of Norton Internet Security have caused more crippled connecitons than any other.

I get calls weekly where disabling or uninstalling Norton Internet Security resolves problems with connectivity. I'm not sure if it's the becausetheprogram is just poorly designed or it if it's just poor help and tutorial info with it.

But the end result is that this program has cost my employers huge resource drains in supporting Norton's customers, and cost my users countless hours of time wasted troubleshooting issues with thios software, and days of lost network access. I also know someone working an a major univeristy that found that this was a source of problems in how their pop-up stopper re-wrote HTML code in web pages it was filtering and caused applications they'd built to fail.

There are free firewalls you can download that are as effective and easier to use. This one can cause far more trouble than it's worth.

1-0 out of 5 stars Sadly -- lost integrity
I have been using Norton products only since about1986, but I'm ready to switch. All manner of problems with this program never seen in previous editions.Instructions and support seriously inadequate at all levels.
I have used this version on two machines -- spent days trying to clean a botched installation [I believe not by me, but the installation program] on one machine. Now a month-old installation an a new desktop is failing.Spent hours with "knowledge" base and incomprehensible advice. Then, for a $29.95 phone call, received numerous recorded "we are too busy to talk to you even if you pay us."Then, a rude and sarcastic rep, who dumped my into an uninstall routine that failed, disconnected my call, and refused to hear symptoms.

1-0 out of 5 stars What happened?!
I bought Norton Internet Security 2004 after I got a VIRUS that NAV7 corporate edition couldn't detect or remove.I thought upgrading the 4 year old program would help.Nope!Norton detects Trojan.Bookmarker.Gen but even in Dos mode is unable to fix it.It turns out that I got an advanced form of the Cool web search trojan/spyware.Well Norton seems to care less.I emailed them about the problem with no response after 2 months. They used to let you submit a new virus discovery but I couldn't find anything anywhere on their site about reporting new viruses.

What happened!?

I guess I could pay them by calling their highly over priced help line to tell them their program sucks but they already have too much of my money.

And what is it with these guys claiming that because it is spyware it is not a virus. If a program hides itself, alters files without permission, and otherwise takes control of your system without your permission, I'm sorry it's a virus. And the leading Anti-virus software should do their job to make their software do what it's supposed to do, eliminate uninvited software(period).Stop passing the responsibility to Spyware removers. It's a virus, plain and simple.

No, I didn't install any freeware, only MS, Adobe, Macromedia, Mozilla, and Norton software.Like someone else said, get McAfee Antivirus and Zone Alarm, not this piece of worthless junk.

Am I alone in this sentiment? (...)

1-0 out of 5 stars More trouble than it's worth
Based on my very postive experience with Norton Anti-Virus and Norton Personal Firewall, I didn't think twice about upgrading to Norton Internet Security Pro. I should have. It does not do properly what it is supposed to do, and it runs so many unneeded processes in the background that it may bog down your machine, depending on your specs. It's content blocking feature blocks the most absurdly innocuous webpages, graphics, etc.

On top of that, it is more often than not too unstable to be at all useful or satisfactory. The worst example of this I have found is that the NIS user/logon/password feature interferes with a similar built-in Windows feature. The average user doesn't need to password-protect access to their machine at all. In my own case I found that this element of NIS, which you are obliged to use, made it impossible to restart the computer; instead I had to do a complete shutdown (and far too often). As a consequence, the first thing I do when I start up is disable NIS altogether. If I uninstall it, I lose the anti-virus protection -- which *does* work.

I requested a refund and was sent a Letter of Destruction (LOD), which I duly signed and returned -- and never heard another thing from them. I never did get my money back.

Neither the average user who excersises common sense, nor the professional who is trained to detect threats needs NIS. You're much better off sticking to Norton Anti-Virus (or a competitor's equivalent) and running the Windows (XP) firewall if you feel you need one. Beyond that, it's just a matter of being smart enough not to walk down a dark alley with $20s hanging out of your pockets.

Lastly, if you are concerned about spyware, bots, tracking cookies, etc., checkout Lavasoft's free program called 'Ad-aware,' available from http://www.lavasoft.de/

1-0 out of 5 stars Not recommended due to poor customer/technical support
I have Norton Internet Security 2002. I have used NIS for a long time and I have, until a few months ago, recommended it for virus protection, anti-hacking security, ad blocking, and privacy protection.

A couple of months ago, a Live Update created an apparent problem with SYMPROXYSVC.EXE that made it very difficult to browse Web pages. Pages often downloaded as slowly as 100-200 bytes/second. (E-mail and FTP seemed unaffected by the problem.) Although Symantec was quite happy to take my money for a subscription update this March, it refused to provide E-mail technical support for the product because support for NIS 2002 had been discontinued. E-mails to customer support received nonresponsive replies (or no replies), and a customer support rep ignored my explicit requests to be put in contact with a supervisor. A fax to the attention of the customer support supervisor was ignored.

Although a subsequent Live Update fixed the underlying problem a while later, I would rate Symantec's customer and technical support as effectively nonexistent and I do take notice of the company's refusal to stand behind its product even though it took my money for an extension to my virus definition subscription. Accordingly, it is no longer possible for me to recommend anything that Symantec makes.

I forwarded a copy of the letter I faxed to the customer support department to Symantec's Investor Relations department because I think their corporate office reallly needs to know what is going on with their customer and technical support departments. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Worked with ME, not XP
I used to use this software a good bit when I had WinME.The only real problem I had was with the answering machine.NO matter what I did, the recorded voice (mine, not the pre-recorded included) sounded as if it was speaking at half-speed.

I've now upgraded to WinXP and I can't get it to work.It installs fine, recognizes and initiates my modem, but it won't send out a fax, nor will it let me make any settings changes. It acts as if there is no phone line connected.

Also, good luck finding any support whatsoever. The original maker Communique, doesn't even list this product on their website.

Stay far, far away!

1-0 out of 5 stars Ever hear the phrase: Good in theory, bad in practic?
This software epitomises this phrase.I bought this software for its voice capabilities, and loew and behold, it has bugs, and it does not fully support my modem. In fact, it only supports 3 modems PERIOD.I wish I had known this before I gought it.Oh well.Do not make the same mistake.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great deal!!
Once in a while, I come across with products with great values at great price. This is one of them.My friend recommended that to me last month and I can't believe all the features it has at this price.First of all, it recognised my modem automatically without any problem and I can send/receive faxes immediately after this.

Unfortunately, my modem has no voice features so I cannot enjoy the voice features of this product yet.Even treated as a fax-only software, it is still a great deal doing the same as Winfax does at $60 less.

1-0 out of 5 stars Do Not Buy This Software
I also purchased this software because it was a good price and it seemed to have all of the features I was looking for. However, when I installed in on my computer to use it, it never worked.I am now out the money I paid for the software because you can not return opened software.I believe if the software requires special equiptment it should be listed on the box so that other comsumers don't waste their money on something that won't work with thier hardware.DO NOT BUY THIS SOFTWARE.

1-0 out of 5 stars DO NOT BUY THIS PROGRAM!!!
If I could this product would receive -5 stars. While it seems to install without a hitch, in actuality that is because it doesn't recognize your equipment and will not work. The authorized modem list consists of less than 12 modems and only one of those is a PCI modem, needless to say not mine.SO! It never got up and running, and being opened software it can't be returned for a refund. Caveat emptor. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Only catches half the spam
This software only catches half the spam I get. When it misses emails with text such as "Banned government CD" I have to wonder if they guys are updating their software at all.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best One Yet!
As a small business owner, my inbox used to receive a constent flow of Spam, that is until I installed "I HATE SPAM".
I have tried other products before, but this one is easy to use, and does actually work.

1-0 out of 5 stars I Despise I Hate Spam!
I bought and installed I Hate Spam on Outlook Express. In spite of careful setting of filters, it continues to place good mail in 'Deleted' and put garbage in my 'Inbox'.But, that is not the worst of it!!I have uninstalled it from my computer and it CONTINUES to interfere with my email and delete my good mail.I CAN'T GET RID OF IT!!

I Hate "I Hate Spam".

2-0 out of 5 stars Nice idea, but it doesn't work
I uninstalled this program because I ended up spending more time dealing with it than it took simply to delete spam messages every morning. It is not capable of detecting messages with forged headers and does not provide an option for automatically deleting messages from foreign countries, which constitute a tremendous amount of the spam I receive.

1-0 out of 5 stars I removed it after two weeks. It's totally ineffectual
For example, you are susposed to be able to block entire domains from sending you spam.I blocked @china.com repeatly with no obvious results. The software relies on ten year old technology and doesn't keep up with spamers.

Don't waste your money. ... Read more
