1-0 out of 5 stars Buyer beware
I am not new to computers. I am used to fixing many kinds of software problems in Windows. This is not an easy product to install on a Windows XP system, especially after it has been upgraded to SP2. If you are expecting to simply install this product, reboot your computer, and start faxing, you will be sorely disappointed. Despite warnings in many other reviews, I purchased v10.03 for use on my Windows XP system with SP2. While I was able to eventually get it installed and running, it slowed my computer's reboot time to a crawl and trashed my scanner software. It took several hours to get most things working again.

First off, you should not try to install anything less than version 10.03 on an XP system. Symantec warns you about this on their web site. If you insist on purchasing WinFax Pro - which I do not recommend - make sure you buy version 10.03.

Secondly, WinFax Pro conflicts with the built-in Windows Fax program in Win XP. You will need to uninstall Windows Fax (which can be done through Control Panel's Add/Remove programs, but you need to look for it in the Add/Remove Windows Components section) to get WinFax Pro to function properly.

Third, after you install WinFax Pro your computer may take forever to reboot. It looks like it is hung up in this process, but if you go do something else for a while it will eventually reboot. I have not figured out why it does this, but it has definitely slowed my computer reboot time to a crawl.

Fourth, if you have a scanner, it may trash your scanner software (it certainly did mine - HP Scanjet 6300C). Symantec's web site has information about this in their knowledge base for WinFax Pro, so it must happen to many others, too. I did not use their fix, though, as I could not find updated twain.dll and twain_32.dll files that they recommend using to replace the ones they screwed up. Instead, I uninstalled and then reinstalled my scanner's installation software. I had to run Symantec's SystemWorks software to find/fix Windows problems and reinstall the scanner drivers a few times before it worked, but eventually I got the scanner working again. WinFax seems to have permanently disabled my scanner's buttons for doing quick operations, though. I have not found a way to restore button function. But I can scan with the Precision Pro software that is part of HP's available software downloads on their web site.

As far as I can tell, after fixing the above-mentioned problems, WinFax Pro 10.03 does seem to work okay. It does not appear to be any improvement over prior versions of WinFax, so unless you have upgraded to Windows XP you will not likely find it worthwhile to upgrade. As many others have stated before me, this is very buggy software that causes many problems with Windows XP and will be horribly frustrating for anyone trying to install and use this software on an XP system. BUYER BEWARE!

1-0 out of 5 stars WinFax: great product but it doesn't work
I have struggled to learn to use many software products however winfax has clearly been the most problematic. Since it was a symantec product I thought it probably was good but I must be doing something wrong.I struggled with the fix to allow it to work with MS word and it would work for a while. Then there would be feezes and crashes or it would just not send faxes.I would reboot to no avail.I would turn off all other programs but to no avail.I tried to find a solution on symantecs web site but to no avail. It must be Windows ME so I put it on Windows XP.It would stop sending faxes for no apparent reason.I tried it on windows 98; again, it would stop sending faxes for no apparent reason.I would try to use it a day or so later and it would work fine for a while. I should have read some of these reviews before I wasted my time.It really should be taken off the market. My question to everyone is which program is usable?Does Communicate Deluxe function?
Thanks.

1-0 out of 5 stars Winfax trouble
I havebeen using this product since winfax lite, (around 1995).Back then, windows was not as extensive and burdened with drivers and registry files. In theory, this is an excellent program, allowing an orderly record of all of your faxes ever sent. The unfortunate reality, is that this program will make your Windows PC behave as if it has a virus, and you will spend enormous amounts of time trying to find a virus and attempting to figure out why the system crashes whenever you try to do anything, most noteable, Microsft Word, and Dragon Naturally Speaking.Very few if any T/S people will be able to find a problem.

Be prepared to spend lots of downtime and time problem solving if you put this program on a PC running windows.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't Buy if You Have DSL
This program is virtually unuseable if you intend to use it on the same phone line that brings your DSL.This is true even if you place a filter on the connection to your modem. This is made clear on Symantec's support pages, but is excluded from its promotional material. An unethical practice in my opinion.Given Amazon's own uncomplimentary review, one wonders why they sell this product.

1-0 out of 5 stars BUYER BEWARE!
Once upon a time, Win Fax Pro had a decent program.Today, NOT!
And certainly not with XP.The technical advisor was in India (out sourced) and I, unwittingly and unknowingly, allowed him to crash my entire system.Complain? To where?India fields the calls. Please pay attention to this horror story.Don't purchase any version (10.0 and over). ... Read more

HotFax Message Center 5.0 provides powerful communications for home or small businesses in one integrated command center. With seamless fax capability integrated with any Windows application, you are always one click away from sending a fax. Optical Character Recognition (OCR) lets you convert received faxes into editable text in just seconds. Other features include a custom cover-page designer, automated fax forwarding, and broadcast fax capability. You can archive or resend received faxes, customize caller ID options, and take advantage of scanner support.

The voice-mail capability provides secure, customizable voice mail, and offers you the ability to create multiple business departments and personal extensions for your home or office. A new feature allows voice-mail messages to be routed directly to an e-mail account. Retrieve them, listen to them, even forward them to other accounts. If you've got a pager, you can receive automatic notification of new messages. HotFax Message Center even allows you to route calls to different mailboxes based on caller ID information. Set up an unlimited number of voice mailboxes, and identified calls are routed to the appropriate mailbox automatically.

HotFax Message Center empowers e-mail with new fax and voice capabilities. Now you can send and receive faxes and voice-mail messages directly to any e-mail address. When you send a fax to an e-mail account, the recipient can read it on screen, print it, or forward it to another e-mail account, just like an ordinary message. 1-0 out of 5 stars Stick to the free FAX software that comes with Windows XP
I just uninstalled it after I got it going (after wasting about 8 hours fiddling).

Here are the main reason I could not work with it any more:

(1) Stability: I have Windows XP Service pack 2. And nine times the application just closed with 'could not read memory error'. Twice it just hung for no reason. When it does crash, it does not try to restart the application - so if you leave it running and go away, be prepared to miss a few FAX's as it might not be running when you get back! It is a while since I have seen an application that is as unstable as this and prone to crashes on a stable well built high spec computer. People tolerated cr*ap 10 years ago when it was acceptable to get the odd blue screens of deaths - but not now! I cant tolerate an application that does not close gracefully after a problem, nor give meaningful error messages so if there are any conflicts, it could be resolved.

(2) My modem is on COM port 9. The automatic software would not let me choose this port as it only listed port 1-4. I had to go into a lot of trouble to reconfigure my BIOS beore it will detect my modem.

(3)It had an SMTP setting which is supposed to forward FAXes to email. I could never get this to work, as the 'SMTP Server setup' dialogue does not have any authentication screen so I can type in my username and passwords for my outbound mail server. Cant belive the developer did not think of this - fundemental requirement for any MAPI / SMTP integrated application

(3) user interface is very 90's and not compliant with the new norm. So you have to spend time familiarizing your self - rather than things being intuitive. The skins were very amateurish.

(4) I tried to open my Outlook contacts - but it wont let me as it does not support the password feature in Outlook or MAPI client - again pretty fundamental and shows the application was not thought out. When I did remove the password in my Outlook to make it work, it did sort of work - but sometimes when I accidently select a contact whose FAX number is not correctly formated, the program would lock up.

(5) The features and functions are inferior to what you get in the free Windows Fax service that comes with Windows XP and the OCR features that comes with Office 2003. Why bother? It was a complete waste of my time - and I am so annoyed that I actually felt compelled to write my review about a product for the first time in my life in herehopefully saving the same agony I had to endure during the last 9 hours.

2-0 out of 5 stars unreliable software, looking for a replacement
I have been using the 4.0 version of this software on a Windows 98 platform for several years, with disappointing results. The fax does not work well when it comes to sending file attachments, sometimes resulting in annoying crashes. Logging the sent or received faxes is a big problem, as the fax viewer cannot open the faxes stored in a default directory that cannot be changed. Very recently I updated my Windows 98 with all the critical updates from Microsoft, and HotFax crashes the computer (very reliably!) every time I try sending a fax. Don't buy this product, find something better.

1-0 out of 5 stars Appalling experience!
After much research and what I thought was careful planning, I downloaded the software and found it would not work with my computer. To make it work would require a new modem for around $300.00. Tried to contact Smith Micro and they were "on holiday". Unfortunately, the time frame to return product expired while they were "on holiday" and they said it was too bad for me. Terrible customer service and I encourage people to do business with another company entirely.

1-0 out of 5 stars Hotfax Message Center
We had a hard drive crash, and lost our copy of Quicklink (and I couldn't find the original media anywhere.) I dl'd the demo, then purchased the new HFMC to install over the demo. The disk that Smithmicro sent was physically broken (they ship the CD in a flimsy envelope, no box) and when I asked for help getting my now-expired system up, they wanted me to send the broken one back before replacing (understand they had a credit card record of my original purchase) God forbid that you have any trouble with these guys. Their tech support is non-existant. They have one of the worst voice-mail-hell systems I've ever seen. I was absolutely furious by the time I actually got to speak with a human. And he was just useless.

I'm using this product to support a remote office call-in system and due to the above non-support, I finally had to buy another copy (downloaded this time) to get my remote ops back up. I feel like an extortion victim. I'll never buy from these guys again. Stars: one for product, ZERO for customer support. I am now searching for a replacement.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Product
This product will SAVE any small business a thousand or more dollars by using a computer and software rather than purchasing an expensive voice mail system.BRAVO to Smith Micro!
BTW, I purchased an early version (2.0) years ago, and it was very good then.I can't wait to start using 5.0! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Worked with ME, not XP
I used to use this software a good bit when I had WinME.The only real problem I had was with the answering machine.NO matter what I did, the recorded voice (mine, not the pre-recorded included) sounded as if it was speaking at half-speed.

I've now upgraded to WinXP and I can't get it to work.It installs fine, recognizes and initiates my modem, but it won't send out a fax, nor will it let me make any settings changes. It acts as if there is no phone line connected.

Also, good luck finding any support whatsoever. The original maker Communique, doesn't even list this product on their website.

Stay far, far away!

1-0 out of 5 stars Ever hear the phrase: Good in theory, bad in practic?
This software epitomises this phrase.I bought this software for its voice capabilities, and loew and behold, it has bugs, and it does not fully support my modem. In fact, it only supports 3 modems PERIOD.I wish I had known this before I gought it.Oh well.Do not make the same mistake.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great deal!!
Once in a while, I come across with products with great values at great price. This is one of them.My friend recommended that to me last month and I can't believe all the features it has at this price.First of all, it recognised my modem automatically without any problem and I can send/receive faxes immediately after this.

Unfortunately, my modem has no voice features so I cannot enjoy the voice features of this product yet.Even treated as a fax-only software, it is still a great deal doing the same as Winfax does at $60 less.

1-0 out of 5 stars Do Not Buy This Software
I also purchased this software because it was a good price and it seemed to have all of the features I was looking for. However, when I installed in on my computer to use it, it never worked.I am now out the money I paid for the software because you can not return opened software.I believe if the software requires special equiptment it should be listed on the box so that other comsumers don't waste their money on something that won't work with thier hardware.DO NOT BUY THIS SOFTWARE.

1-0 out of 5 stars DO NOT BUY THIS PROGRAM!!!
If I could this product would receive -5 stars. While it seems to install without a hitch, in actuality that is because it doesn't recognize your equipment and will not work. The authorized modem list consists of less than 12 modems and only one of those is a PCI modem, needless to say not mine.SO! It never got up and running, and being opened software it can't be returned for a refund. Caveat emptor. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good overall fax system
For a fax program that is better than the windows version, this program is a no brainer. I have no trouble sending and receiving faxes. Good product to buy, no problems yet.

1-0 out of 5 stars Compatibility Problems
Tried V4.0, did not reliably answer calls and itcaused problems with my system seizing up when answering.

2-0 out of 5 stars Complex - Performs less than Satisfactory in Answering Calls
Used version 3 and 4.Choices of mail boxes, answering calls, paging, and faxing. The first PC answering machine we used wasFaxWorks on a Packard Bell PC.In contrast, every other package we have tried performs a great deal of secondary options, yet they are less than adequate on answering phone calls for small businesses. Furthermore, if you listened to a message on HotFax and wanted to replay, you need to open another menu.Possibly for you if you don't need the voice service. It is also difficult to set up simultaneously with an All-in-One printer (HP OfficeJet).END ... Amazon.com Review

If you're the kind of person who suffers from panic attacks when you'restuck in an airport or at a three-day self-improvement workshop without atelephone outlet to enable Internet access, QuickLink Mobile 2.0 could be yoursecret lifesaver. Connect your laptop to your wireless phone, and in no timeyou'll be checking stock quotes and sports scores from anywhere, at any time.

While installation of QuickLink Mobile 2.0 might be a quick and easy process, you should make sure your phone is compatible with the program before youpurchase the software. You can verify this by going to www.ql2k.com and viewingan updated list of compatible phones. If your phone type is on the list, you cansign up to receive a free cable to connect your cell phone to your laptop serial port (ours took less than a week to arrive). You might want to take careof this as soon as you purchase the software so you don't have to wait too longto get started. If your type of phone is not on the list, QuickLink has acustomer-service number for you to call; however, it's probably better to find adifferent application, or to upgrade to a data-enabled phone.

After you've configured your dialup networking and created an account for yourwireless phone, you're ready to dial up. After you've connected to the Internet, you can surf the Web, check e-mail, and keep on top of the day's headlines. Onefeature that we especially liked was the Wireless Internet Accelerator, whichallowed us to filter Web graphics and speed up connection times. In addition, you have the option to preview e-mail messages, so that you can read the headerswithout downloading the entire message--again, saving precious memory. Theapplication even includes QuickLink Fax, which allows you to send and receivefaxes using your cell phone.

QuickLink Mobile 2.0 also includes monitoring features to help you control yourcellular Internet usage. However, keep in mind that surfing the Web with yourcell phone can eat away at cellular time and battery life quickly. Still, ifyou're always on the go and can't live without your Internet fix, QuickLinkMobile 2.0 will keep you connected when you need it the most. --GiseleToueg

1-0 out of 5 stars Poor, Poor Customer Service
I purchased this item to use with the Audiovox PC5220 and my Macintosh. It doesn't work, but they told me that only after I waited almost aweek for a response to my support inquiry. I then requested a refund. It has been almost two months, and I finally got a denial email today. I have never encountered such horrendous customer service. This is the second time I've dealt with Smith Micro, and the first time was just as bad. Be warned -If you need any support on any of their products, you should be prepared to wait.....and wait.....and wait.... Also, buy it from a dealer, not direct, so that you can return it, if necessary. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars THIS SOFTWARE IS TERRIBLE!
I have just purchased the COMMUNICATE! software and quite frankly, I am extremely disappointed with the purchase! The set up process is cumbersome and complicated. Additionally, importing data is excruciating from the incomplete and poorly written included instructions. Unfortunately, the manufacturer (01 Communique) does not appear to offer a money back guarantee and once software has been opened it cannot be returned. If you are considering the purchase of fax software, I STRONGLY suggest that you spend your money on a different fax program!

1-0 out of 5 stars DO NOT BUY THIS SOFTWARE
I bought the Communicate 10.0 and I could not get it to work so the manufacturer had me try the i2000 version to see if I could get that to work.I downloaded the software and I could not get that to work either.I sent them the test information they asked me for and they told me that my modem was not compatible. He sent me a list of modems and there were only Three modems listed which were not listed on the box as hardware requirements. If you don't want to lose your money do not buy this software.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pretty cool!
I haven't been using the product for that long, but it certainly has all the bells-and-whistles, and they all work. It is picky about the modem it needs (requiring a modem that properly supports voice), but once running it is very slick! Answers my phone, allows me to do voice mail blasts etc. etc.

I would definitely recommend anyone try the 30 day trial. They have a newer product that allows remote access to your email, contacts, files and such (according to tech support anyway), but the remote access appears to be the only difference from this product ... and if it ain't broke! ... Amazon.com Review

Have you noticed people don't talk about the future anymore? Perhaps we've caught up with it--we're practically living in the world of The Jetsons as far as information technology is concerned. Communicate! i2000 helps you step smartly into this futuristic present, with more communication options than Edison could ever have imagined.

Video phoning, Internet paging, and faxing are combined in one easy interface. Add audio and video snippets to e-mail, manage voice mail and fax scheduling remotely, and set up your own unattended bulletin board system (BBS), using regular phone lines or a dedicated Internet connection.

The learning curve is pretty gentle, too; while some of the newer or more advanced features might take some tweaking, you can jump right in and start making calls or faxes right away. Don't worry about translating your contact data from other programs, either--Communicate! i2000 offers plenty of import and linking features so you should be able to access any information from almost any software.

If you want to consolidate your communications software into one inexpensive, comprehensive package, Communicate! i2000 should be your first choice. When you're videoconferencing, reading e-mail, sending faxes, and on the phone with your stockbroker simultaneously, you'll wonder how long it'll take to get your jetpack and food pills. --Rob Lightner ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Multipurpose Communication Program
This the most complete professional communications program I have used in my 25 years of computer experience.Your computer becomes a fax/voice mail/video conferencing machine.

4-0 out of 5 stars it works just fine
some folks have had trouble with the product I see but if you have a modem that is compatable it works without problem- it took me a while to get everything set up because it is complex software but once working it gave me the equivalent of a good in office receptionist

But be sure to have a compatable modem before you start

1-0 out of 5 stars modems are unavailableor no longer supported
i have tried compro version 2 and had to go back to my old speaker phone and answering machine

so i upgraded to version 5
same thing ..bound and determined to make it work .. 4 modems
later (communicate points at the modems)

one modem manufacturers tech support told me to give up on the software and move on

being a little hard headed i hired a certified technician to come to my office to straighten it out, he removed sound cards, configured, re-configured, tried all 4 of the modems i had purchased, tried windows 98, windows me, downloaded drivers from obscure web sites, smoked a pack of cigarettes and left
scratching his head
so..before you buy this software, try to find a modem from the list at 01com.com look over the list very carefully to see if has the features you want
then try to find the modem. don't bother going to local super store they only sell current, supported hardware
it is not on the shelf i assure you
try the auctions
then..... try to find support for the outdated modem or updated drivers....
so it is back to the old answering machine i guess

1-0 out of 5 stars Sadly the worse purchase I 'ever' made...
I made it a point to come here and write this review. But one star is wrong... it should be 'negative' 5 stars! Perhaps I can spare someone else the nightmare that I endured.

I'm disabled and depend on phone communications to make a living.I wanted the best. After 3 months, 2 modems, at least 100 hours of frustration and a dozen emails to the support department -- this software sits on the shelf collecting dust!It is completely unusable. They assured me that it would provide basic phone functionality with my current modem (Creative Blaster) by email `before I bought it'... but it does not and `after I bought' they're story changed.

Hear's what you're buying: conversations fade out (you think the other person paused but no...), you must adjust the volume between dialing and talking or your ears will bleed (the dialing beep can be heard in the next city), it won't `beep' after the answering machine message (you have to add your own), it doesn't notify you when a message is waiting, if you link it to Outlook it zaps Outlook every time you look up a number, and on occasion it cuts messages off at 3 seconds... and there's more. The over all design is terrible, its hard to use and its completely over engineered.

'After' I bought it they said 'oh, won't work with that modem'.I switched to my 2nd PC which had 'approved modem' on their list... same thing!Which says to me that they would have me go out and purchase another modem and install it for nothing. The next thing they told me was, 'Oh, you must not use your sound card' - well, who needs multimedia anyway.BTW, freeware works fine with my modem and sound card... *freeware*!

Perhaps, if you work down the modem list and get just the right one, devote your entire sound system to Communicate! i2000 and devote the next 3 months of your life to messing with all this... you might be able to phone home!I never even got to try the other features.

Of course I'm beyond the refund period.I'm stuck, they won't refund my money (they got me!).Money truly wasted but it is the `time' I wasted on it that really cost me.

I'd sell it cheap but... I wouldn't do that to my worst enemy.

Yes... Commnicate! I2000's features sound so nice don't they -- unfortunately you need to press `redial' on this one and move on... as quickly as possible!

3-0 out of 5 stars Compatability Issues
I have yet to resolve the compatability issues with this software and the modem. Anyone interested in the software should contact the i2000 technical support team for a list of modems that are compatible with the software. Though the software boasts of the feature rich content. (which is why I purchased it for a small business ap out of my home). I will purchase a compatible modem and give it a shot. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Beware
This software has majot bugs in that it will cut the bottom of your page also it will not discern letter from legal size of incoming fax and to make things worse, Smith Micro was aware of this problem at publishing time....

1-0 out of 5 stars keep looking, this is not the one for you
I spent several hours yesterday trying to install this program and never did get it running. It simply does not work consistently. It crashes Appleworks most of the time and when it doesn't, it only successfully sends a fax about one in 6 tries. The rest simply vanish into the netherworld of lost data.I finally gave up and am going to try CoMa,Fax Express, eFax or one of the many others.Another reviewer had said this was the ONLY fax program available for OS X which is not true - there are several. I haven't had a chance to try any of the others yet, so can't give recommendations, but a quick Google search came up with quite a few.Tucows gives FaxExpress five cows, so that will probably be my first stop.

In any case, I can not get this to work with the latest version of OS 10.2.whatever (using the latest update from Smith Micro) and am giving up on Smith Micro... I was able to use it (sometimes) under OS 10.1, but even then it had problems.Another big disappoinment was the fact that I could not import my fax numbers from FAXstf for OS 9 (which is a real drag as I have hundreds of numbers in my fax phonebook). It is integrated with the Apple Address book (rather then having it's own phonebook) which is kind of funky as it makes for a lot of unneccessary steps. To send a fax, I have to scroll down the file menu to print, then go down the pop-up list to set the address, then open the address book, THEN click on the address I want and move it into the FAXstf menu.THEN, one has to set all the other preferences (like rather or not you want a cover letter or even something as simple as rather or not to put a 1 before long distance numbers) each and every time.It is a real pain not to be able to set general fax preferences and be done with it).

I used FAXstf for OS 9 for a long time and was very satisfied with it.It's too bad their version for OS X is so lame.

1-0 out of 5 stars Never got it to work correctly
After much back-and-forth with Smith Micro tech support, I was never able to send or receive a fax. This software is not ready for prime time, and was a waste of my money.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Best ( And Only) Fax Program for OS X
For some strange reason, Apple has neglected to include the ability to easily fax documents with your computer in OS X. FAXSTF X is currently the only publisher of software so it's hard to compare it.

One of the most important things that the installation neglects to mention is don't install the software anywhere else except in the default location. Even though you have that option, if you do install in another directory or disk, the update will not recognize it and you'll have to delete and reinstall it again. And since FAXSTF gives itself root ownership, deleting it takes a little work. So install it into the default location.

The second thing is to make sure you download the most current version. The version on disk is for versions up to OS 10.1.2. If your use OS 10.1.3 or higher you must download the update from their site.

That said, the installation into the default directory is easy and painless. So it the update (which requires a re-boot of the machine), but must be downloaded .

Once the program is installed, faxing is easy - go to the printing center and add the modem as a printer. Now from any application, you simply select the fax as a printer and you're done.

1-0 out of 5 stars AVOID THIS PROGRAM AT ALL COSTS!
It is extremely hard to put into words how absolutely awful this program is.[...]Not only does it NOT fax, but it crashes Mac OS X, it slows down the system to a crawl, it is missing over 500 features that were available in the previous version, it is clunky & unintuitive, it is completely bug-ridden from beginning-to-end, and it is a complete nightmare.[...] ...
