Moneydance 2005 Available Online
After years of using an end-of-life proprietary product from my bank, I finally had to breakdown and move from it due to it's lack of interoperability with XP Service Pack 2.I had delayed doing this for years because of the negative reviews I had seen for Quicken, especially all of the embedded adware.I didn't trust Intuit (or Microsoft either) that a hidden online access point wouldn't be putting my valuable personal financial data at risk in order to promote it's online banking features.

I searched Amazon, and found this product and the reviews, although they were a few years old.(...)

If all you want is a reliable banking application with online bank access and NO ADWARE, this software is absolutely for you.The online component is not included by default, so no worries about the software taking you to a proprietary online banking site like quicken's or microsoft's.However, they make it VERY easy to add-on online banking features and support both .qif and Quicken's new .qdf formats.

All of my data transferred over (my old software was able to export to .qif), although I did have to spend a little time re-organizing things.Whether that is a quirk of Moneydance, or the legacy software I was transfering from, I don't know.

The software has support for investment accounts, although I've never tracked mine using my banking software, so I haven't tried it.

Another big plus for the software is that it is Java based, and will install on any Java-enabled platform.No more being locked into Windows.

Cheap and simple.
I am satisfy with the software for what I paid for. However, importing Quicken exchange files (QIF) that contains multiple dependent accounts that span few years still remains a problem. Not sure how to resolve the issue so I started from scratch and keep my backups as is. A demo can be downloaded from their website. Interface is very clean and simple. Support documents are poor at best.

Moneydance NOT out of business
Dear Friends: The Moneydance website says that on Feb. 13, 2003, there was a management change, restoring Moneydance to its orignal managers for marketing, promotion, etc. So this software is not out of business. I have not used it yet, but am curious about it, and am not entirely happy with Quicken or Money.

Out of Business
MoneyDance seems to have gone by the wayside. No support, no website, nothing. So waste of damn money. Don't get it- if you're looking for support.

Nice, very nice
It's very easy to learn, and a wonderful way to track your money. A tad bit expensive, though. But at least it's not trying to log me onto the internet every 5 minutes... and it doesn't pop up with my bank account info everytime I go to a shopping website like certain OTHER financial programs. ... Where has this program been all of my life?
This program is awesome - it synchs with Microsoft Money effortlessly and flawlessly.Enter it in either Microsoft Money or Ultrasoft Money and they update each other with a hotsynch. No making backup files, no manual exporting or importing. Never has keeping up my checkbook been easier.Set up is a breeze - on the first hotsynch, all categories and accounts, balances, payees, etc are downloaded into Ultrasoft Money and away you go!This program has made owning a PDA all that it could be when it comes to managing finances.

SYNCHRONIZE instead of Export/Import GIF
Pocket Money requires Export or Import by downloading. That is very poor way of updating MS Money.With Ultra Soft you merely use HotSyn and synchronize in cradle.Much easier than with Pocket Money.

Clunky even in v2.0
The manufacturer has since come out with a newer version of
this product (version 2.0) but both versions are spotty and
clunky. There are strengths to be sure, but it is hard to
recommend this product. Permissions issues, installation
difficulties, problems in multiple user environments, you
get the idea. Some of the problems are solved with the patches

Small font and poor customer support
My install had a lot of hiccups and customer support was no help.They said they would let me know if there was an update available--never happened.I just donated it.I also didn't like the small font.

Pocket Quicken vs. Handmark's PocketMoney
I have been a long-time user of Handmark's PocketMoney, and recently tried a 14-day trial of Pocket Quicken.

As you might expect, each program has it's strengths and weaknesses.

While PocketMoney has a nicer, icon-based account list, Pocket Quicken seems a little cluttered, with awkward rounded and square "buttons" to switch between account list and register.I also thought PocketMoney had a more natural method of entering data - more like Quicken.

So, if I like PocketMoney so well, why am I giving Pocket Quicken a 5-star rating?It all comes down to the conduits - how the information transfers between your desktop and PDA.Pocket Quicken wins, hands down.PocketMoney requires a manual export procedure, where you have to designate a particular file directory.It doesn't always work all that well, even if you are an experienced computer user.If you are a novice, well, it's just too much trouble.

Pocket Quicken's strengths more than make up for its weaknesses.It works so naturally with your desktop version of Quicken that every Hotsynch keeps both your PC and your PDA current.Compare the free trials of both versions, and I am convinced you will also come to the conclusion that Pocket Quicken is the best personal accounting software for your PDA.

Accounting Synergy!
I am in awe of this product. It is used with a Palm Zire 71 and synchs with Quicken 2002 on a laptop using Windows ME. It performed so flawlessly after I downloaded and used the trial copy that I wasted no time ordering the full version (Amazon.com, of course).For its intended mobile purpose, I find no reason to fault this program.
Anyone requiring on-the-go data gathering with simple and accurate transfer would do well to try it.

Not really used
I have not really had a chance to use it, because I could not sync it to the Quicken software on my laptop.This is mainly my fault as I put a password on the laptop software to protect the file it saves to. In order to have the new software on the pda sync it needs the password to the file, which I have long forgotten and haven't figured out how to get around yet. So, that is my little bit of warning to any future purchasers, but up until that, the installation was fairly simple and went smoothly.

Good product- reliable, convenient, integrates with desktop
I've been a Quicken user for years, and Pocket Quicken on my Palm m125 has been a real help.I keep track of debit card purchases easily (and am beginning to record cash purchases as well).It synchs reliably and easily to my laptop.(I synch my Palm to 3 different hosts - laptop for my regular Quicken, home desktop for Documents-to-Go and work desktop for calendar and address books.The Palm synch program keeps all of this straight.)

One problem- on a split transaction, I can't add a memo.

Realistic representation
As a number of people here have mentioned Getting started can be a challenge, BUT that isn't necessarily the softwares fault. True accounting practices are NOT necessarily intuitive to the un-initiated. If you have no experience in the paper based world of keeping books then don't expect this software to make it easy for you to do it on a computer. This product does make is much much easier than it could be. If you've not had experience keeping books than get yourself a book on basic book keeping / accounting practices. Also buy yourself a book beyond what the manufacturer puts out as a 'manual'. I used Gail Perry's Using QuickBooks 2002 to train my wife to run QuickBooks and although it wasn't exactly what I'd call 'hand holding' it was thorough.

BOTTUM LINE: Realize your short comings and plan ahead, keeping books for a company is'nt just balancing a checkbook and keeping track of your credit card bill. If you are truely going to get powerful and useful reporting, which can propell your business forward, you'll have to put some time into learning to keep your books.

Not easy to learn, not intuitive (no pun), but does the job
I've been a software developer for 40 years, and I wrote a General Ledger program for the PC 15 years ago. So then, why did I buy QuickBooks? Because I wanted to accept credit card payments, and QuickBooks is a LOT cheaper than one of those dumb credit card terminals. However, QuickBooks was written by the "be reasonable - do it our way" school of software development; the program is NOT intuitive (no pun intended), so the learning curve is significant. The program starts out in "interview mode" and asks you questions without telling you the impact of your answers. Once you get your company and chart of accounts set up, the program is quite flexible. I found the program's "Help" facility one of the best I've seen in PC software.

So, after reading all these negative reviews here, I decided to get a copy of Peachtree Accounting 2003 and compare it.

1. QuickBooks offers subaccounts (very useful); Peachtree doesn't.

2. QuickBooks doesn't require account numbers; Peachtree does. This makes QuickBooks much easier to use, and easier for non-accounting types to learn.

3. Working with the Chart of Accounts is much easier in QuickBooks than Peachtree.

4. Reports seem easier to set up in QuickBooks than Peachtree, although that could just be my experience.

5. Peachtree offers a brief accounting tutorial; QuickBooks doesn't.

6. Peachtree installation is easy and straight-forward, but it won't install common files on a Samba-based network drive, and downloaded updates are only stored on the local drive. QuickBooks works fine with Samba-based network drives, and makes a point of putting downloaded updates on a sharable drive.

7. Reinstalling QuickBooks after you've updated the program is a pain, as your company data file cannot then be read by the freshly reinstalled QuickBooks. Unfortunately, the only way to re-update the software is to load a company file. So, you've got to load one of the sample files, upgrade, and then load your company file. Confusing and DUMB.

I'm not at all impressed with Intuit as a company (especially TurboTax), but this program is significantly better than Peachtree (the only other program out there I know of that can process credit card payments online).

It's official...I hate this product!
I used QB 99 for years and decided to upgrade to this mainly because we got a new computer.All I can say is trying to set up your company is a guaranteed headache.It's very complicated, and 75% of the time it won't let you do what you need to do.90% of the "features" I would never use.I'm canning this and definitely going to search for a simpler accounting software.Did I mention the fees?Yes, Intuit will charge you fees for just about everything under the sun, including tax tables (essential for doing payroll), tech support, and all of their other "services".

PASSWORD
This isn't so much a review, but I had a problem yesterday and was told to write to quickbooks. This is the only site I could find. I recently installed the updated version and have been using since 10/21.I turned my computer on last night and before I could go into quickbooks it wanted a password. I never enter passwords.I called tech support and they insisted I entered a password, as I am the only person who uses the program and the computer is in my hame I have no need to use passwords.I then shut down the computer and restarted it and I was able to go into quickbooks.I would like someone to tell me why this happened.The tech support people were of no help.

An Accountant's Review
As a small business accountant, I have used a variety of accounting software programs including QuickBooks, Peachtree, etc. Of all the programs I have used QuickBooks is the easiest for non-accountants to use. It's also the easiest for non-accountants to screw up. Therein lies the problem. QuickBooks does not teach you accounting. It provides you with a framework to keep track of your records. When it's set up and maintained correctly, it provides a business owner with tons of valuable data on the health of your business. I recommend QuickBooks very highly but I suggest that business owner's get help from a pro when they're setting up their company. I have spent numerous billable hours cleaning up poorly set up companies. Although that's great for MY business, it's not good for yours. It's much cheaper for you to start out with the right framework and training. Understanding the numbers side of your business is crucial to your success but don't expect a software program to be the magic bullet that teaches you everything you need to know. Does not live up to Advertisement
The Advertisement says, "Never enter sales data into QuickBooks Financial Software again!"After I bought it, I found out it doesn't assign a sales representative to each sale when it transfers information to Quickbooks Pro 2002.When you paycommissions, this is an important piece of information.It only sends a consolidated receipt for each type of transaction (cash, check or credit card)and does not include what was sold.It also does not make inventory updates to Quickbooks.I had been waiting for this program to come out for a couple of months, and unfortunately I will be sending it back.Hopefully they will make improvements on the data exchange on the next version. ...
