5-0 out of 5 stars SOOO much better than NOrton
I've been using Norton for two years and it permits adware and viruses galore. PC-cillin updates automatically every day. I rarely get any adware and get no viruses. When I bought it I was using Norton yet PC cillin found 17 viruses when I loaded it on.
With Norton, my adware program removed between 6 and 31 viruses per day. With PC Cillin, ADWARE found only 4 over two weeks. Like other reviewers stated, it works automatically, unlike NOrton's annoying messages that pop up several times for the same thing. PC- Cillin is a GREAT program! Debbi

5-0 out of 5 stars The best of this type of bundle
It seems to work well, updates frequently, has all the major types of protection, sells for a good price and reading reviews seems to be more compatible with most systems over Norton or McAfee.I recomend it.Installed it on 2 desktops and 2 laptops with no problems whatsoever.Save some money and buy it on Ebay for $25 brand new.

4-0 out of 5 stars Agree...an excellent replacement for Norton
I grew tired of Norton SLOWING DOWN my computer...their Security software works pretty good, but hogs resources. And doesn't block all the adware.

Pc-cillin installed without a hitch. Cleaned up my hard drive, even removed that pesky elitebar adware...which had drive me nuts for months. No other "removal" program had been able to remove all of it.

I do wish Trend Micro's software could block banner ads...maybe in an upgrade?

In a word, I highly recommend the PC-cillin program. My computer now runs MUCH faster than with Norton, and no more elitebar problem! Thank God!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great product, easy to install, and easy to use
After reading one horror story after another about Norton Internet Security 2005, I made the switch to Trend Micro PC-cillin.I am delighted with this product. It was easy to install and customize.I am not a technical wizard, but I can read and follow instructions. That's all that's needed to have a perfect installation.Product performance also gets and A+.It does everything the write-up says it does.I had a question about customizing for a wireless setup, and called the Customer Support number.Within 3 minutes, I was speaking to a live, knowledgeable technician, who answered my question. At this point I knew there was no way I would return this product, and cut out the UPC to apply for my rebate.Receiving the check took about 8 weeks, but that's O.K.I did get it, and I am one satisfied customer.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good product
Previously used MacAfee, Norton and AVG. This is a superior product. Was running Zonealarm too previously, but couldn't ZA and PC-Cillin to work together. So took ZA off, and used PC-Cillin's firewall. Works fine now, but doesn't have as many features as ZA.

Web content filter is great, to stop kids looking at inappropriate pages.

User interface could be better laid out, but one gets used to it.

Updates come almost daily now, but that's just life!

Overall, I am extremely confident that my system is secure now. Good product, at a good price. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Why I'm Sticking With Norton
I've recently been reading a ton of complaints around the web about the Symantec Norton Antivirus and Internet Security Suite of software. The following little review has been written in response to those complaints:

One of the biggest complaints that I read about Norton Antivirus and Norton Internet Security is the cost. For me, however, the annual upgrade on Norton Products always ends up free--at least it has since the turn of the millenium. Inevitably if you wait long enough their rebates come out that make the upgrade to the new product absolutely cost free. This holds true even with their full suite which may retail at $70, but I've managed to get 5 copies for various computers I manage at a final cost to me of $0. Actually, with Amazon.com because I get a discount because of the A9 search engine, I think I've managed to earn a couple of bucks by installing Norton Internet Security. Next year, I'll use the rebates to do the same.

With Internet Security, the concerns of many people who are against Norton and Symantec (especially firewall) with the exception of the resource hog issue (Symantec really needs to address this issue) are handled.

Symantec needs to fix their technical service side of things by offering free help of at least some sort. They need to tone down the issues of resource hogging. But as long as they offer me free upgrades every year and consistently maintain virus-free computers (6 years virus free on all on the computers I've managed: usually 5-7 at one time) I'll stick with Symantec. Nevertheless, despite these pitfalls, as long as I can keep upgrading for free and my systems remain virus-free, Norton is my source for internet security.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great combination of Symantec (Norton) products
This is a recently released product, so that's why you don't see very many reviews.I'll tell you, based on my own experience of running Peter Norton's software since the early DOS days (1984/85), there is something wrong with either your Operating System installation (XP or otherwise) or your hardware if you can't get this beautiful suite running on your machine.

I loaded it yesterday on a Pentium 2GHz / 1GB RAM / 60GB hard drive and this is very nice. The protection is comprehensive -- you get Anti-Virus, Firewall, and SPAM in one box.I'm not a salesperson for Symantec, just a long-time customer of theirs, so I have nothing to gain by raving about their products. One major flaw in their product designs is that they mix and match individual components (anti-virus, firewall, utilities, disk imaging) in various different "suites" or packages, and I know that can cause problems on systems that have multiple versions of all the Symantec DLLs and all those registry entries cross-referencing each other.

Sorry to get too techy, but I think this is an excellent product and they have made great progress since their 2003 and 2004 versions.

3-0 out of 5 stars Forget the Rebate
Although the product worked well, (easy installation, good protection) the promised rebate by Symantec was rejected; it seems they have a policy of nitpicking in order to not to honor the rebate... interesting business practices.

1-0 out of 5 stars NIS will let your computer lethargic
Norton Internet Security 2005 will completely take over your system processing time bringing your computer to its knees!!. NIS will protect your PC, but it will also convert a P4 2.66 GHz with 768MB RAM in to a lethargic computer. For NIS to run it uses more than 21 processes that take almost 40MB of your valuable system RAM, it is absurd.

Worst of all, try to access their inexistent support... you don't have the right for even one call. They only take calls from corporate customers/products.

Go for some other product, RUN AWAY! don't use this one!. I did not followed others reviews, what a big mistake!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Product
This is a great product that surpases anything else that's on the market. It's a powerful yet easy program to use.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best in Class
Contrary to what has been written in the previous 2 reviews this
product is the best of its' kind. I have been using it, and ONLY
it, for the past 6 months, in a new installation of XP/SP2, and it
co-exists flawlessly. Previous to this I have used both McAfee and
Norton products, and while they are also good there is no question
in my mind that this is the superior product. I no longer use any
other spyware removal tools [Spybot, Adware, etc], as PC-cillin
has been very effective in catching these nasty devils in realtime.
I must also point out that it is 'perfectly' integrated into
SP2's Security Center.

It is the best in class.

1-0 out of 5 stars STAY AWAY FROM THIS ONE!!!
Unfortunately I couldn't rate this product as ZERO. From the time I installed this software on my computer, it started acting strangely: computer freezes, crashes, etc. To top this off it directed me to a bogus Microsoft Update site. Eventually, I couldn't even access my ISP. Needless to say, I uninstalled this crap from my computer right away. But who's to say that I won't continue to have problems in the near future. This is what happens when you install products from shady characters. Pay no attention to the positive feedback on this product, but if you are a gambler and can afford to destroy your computer of sacrifice your security, then go on ahead and install this on your system. Be forewarned, however, that your risk will be high.

1-0 out of 5 stars Poor support.Beware - on weekends you're on your own!
PC-Cillen has worked well for me for the past couple of years, however, this weekend it put me through sheer hell.On Saturday morning (April 23, 2005)I booted up my computer and when I clicked on icons nothing would happen. After rebooting several times, I called Trend Micro and they were closed. So I went into safe mode and tried to run PC-Cillen, but their screen wouldn't appear. So I ran Ad Aware and Spy Sweeper. That didn't help.I ran system restore and that didn't help.I rebooted the computer to Windows XP and tried to run PC-Cillen.It took about 20 minutes for their screen to appear. After waiting several hours as PC-Cillen scanned my hard drives, the software froze up before it finished.I tried to defrag but my computer didn't need it, so I ran error-checking and still couldn't find anything wrong. All this time being wasted when I so desperately needed my computer to do work for my business.Saturday evening I went out and bought a new hard drive. Then I began the long task of backing up everything on my computer.By 5 AM Sunday morning, I finally went to bed.At noon Sunday I got up and began formatting the new internal hard drive. When I ran into problems installing my PC-Cillen Internet Security 2005, I tried to call Trend Micro again.Once more I got the message that they were closed. So I gave up and waited until Monday morning. When I called Trend Micro I was told that they had sent a pattern file for a worm they were designing to my computer and that it hogged all of my system resources. They are supposed to be guarding my computer against this type of problem. That is what I pay them for and yet they created the problem and SENT IT TO ME to screw up my PC!Sweet! It's as if my insurance agent came out to my house and tossed a match onto a pile of newspapers in my living room to see if they would burn my house down! Trend Micro representatives claim they were open all weekend for this emergency and all I needed to do was go into safe mode and delete the file!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Anti-Virus; Passed Port Scan
I really like how few system resources this software uses.I am using it on both an ancient system running Win98 and on a 3Ghz system running XP.Works like a charm on both and loads quickly. The anti-virus portion of the software is particularly good.Another plus is the wi-fi detection.Good stuff that's right on top of things. The virus checking on the e-mail works fine, too.The not so good?I would get a free spyware checker, such as Ad-Aware SE instead of using the confusing and "undoable" spyware checker included in this package. You make a mistake on what you remove and you might be very sorry. The anti-spam portion of the software is also quite weak.I had read some online reviews which seemed to question the effectiveness of the firewall, but it passed several free online scans with reports of all ports being not merely stealthed, but blocked.I am not much of a techie and don't know how much outbound filtering the firewall provides; however, the suite does prevent virus-like outbound emailing activity if you want it to.Overall, the feature set and pricing can't be beat.Definitely worth considering, especially if you are tired of some of the bloatware that's out there. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Server Basics 101
I just took on setting up my first small office network. We have four computers and a desktop that someone set up to run as a server. The 6 gig harddrive had long seen its time and needed to be replaced.I bought a Dell PowerEdge SC420, 4 Windows XP Professional upgrades (from Amazon at an amazing price and current rebate) and Windows Small Business Server 2003 (also at a great price).I've worked on PC's for years but never set up a office network with a server.I was very apprehensive and questioned my skill but this software honestly was ridiculously simple to install and deploy.

It guides you through the entire process step by step and I recommend it highly to anyone looking for their first server software.Of course it does have some very technical aspects that left me scratching my head but that's because I don't know what I'm doing.Setting up Sharepoint and Exchange will require some further reading on my part but shouldn't be that difficult to deploy.

I recommend this product very highly and didn't give it 5 stars because of my own inexperience and not being able to see what it can fully do.It also takes hours to install which is pretty typical for any Microsoft product.I did have the whole thing done in one Saturday though and it took about 8 hours altogether. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Norton Anti-Spam is a hoax; how can they do this to us?
I have been using Norton internet security software for several years; I suppose the anti-virus and the firewall parts of their current package work OK; certainly they never stop up-grading, almost daily, to my considerable irritation. But the "AntiSpam" is a joke!I tell "AntiSpam", in the "Rules", to treat any e-mail with "Rate", "rate", "Rates" or "rates" in the "from" space as spam. But e-mail with these words in the "from" space get through ALL THE TIME.Is it so very hard to write software to check whether any of these four little words (or any four little words) are in a "from" space? I could give several other examples of the total failure of Norton AntiSpam to do anything like it claims to do, involving equally simple tasks like the "rates" one.I usea Pentium 4 at 2.5G with oceans of hard drive space.I think some, or all the, people at Symantec should be ashamed of themselves for foisting such a less-than-worthless hoax on us, the buyers.I say "less-than-worthless" because it wastes good hard drive space which could be used for better purposes, and because it suggests a false sense of security, at least for a while. If you are thinking of buying this product, please don't.Maybe if sales go down, then Symantec will decide to try and give some value for money.

2-0 out of 5 stars Antispam fails, tech support fails
I've used Norton for many years with only minor annoyances and irritations, things I could live with because Norton is given high antivirus effectiveness ratings. This version taught me its time to find another. My three major issues: crashes, antispam, and tech support.
Crashes: My wireless laptop (just a normal Toshiba Satellite) crashes & reboots on startup, repeatedly. Workaround: disable Norton until after the system boots.
Antispam. Flat out does not work, on three different systems, my Toshiba laptop, my HP Pavillion desktop, my Dell desktop. Works for awhile, but eventually locks up outlook (both 2002 & 2003 versions). Sometimes crashes or locks up my entire system.
Tech support: A not-very-funny-joke. They take weeks, even more than a month to respond. They respond with cookbook fixes. They even repeated themselves once. I've spent over 6 months trying to get some resolution. Ha-Ha.
Bottom line, I've dropped Norton from my list. I can not trust their product or services. There's nothing left.

1-0 out of 5 stars NIS is Crap.
I really like what Norton/Symantec wants to do. We need some tools to stop adware, spyware, popups etc etc. But I think Norton is going about it totally wrong.

Firstly they have a default list of blocks/permits which I think have been really badly chosen. Legitimate sites just don't work now.

Its totally crazy that a whole range of sites don't work when NIS is on. There also is no clear cut method for legitimate website developers to build around NIS because they seem to change their concept all the time.

NIS inserts javascript into every page that you open and often it inserts it in the wrong place and therefore gives errors on the browser. This will make some pages not open or not behave correctly.

If it works badly most of the time, I'd rather just turn it off. Then if I anyway leave it turned off... I'd rather just uninstall it. If I've uninstalled it... why pay and buy the damn thing in the first place.

Guys at Norton.... You've built great products in the past but this one is just nuts.

TERIBLE TERRIBLE TERRIBLE.My life is too short to deal with this c$#p!I only wish I had read the reviews before I bought this junkie software.I also was a loyal Norton customer.I remember using Norton utilities in the good-old days of DOS and I never had any problems.Unfortunately, I suspect that Mr. Norton has long ago sold out to Symantec and he's on a beach somewhere. Now we have to deal with a faceless, heartless (and money grubbing) corporation. The anti-spam feature works intermittently and unreliably.Further, customer support is a JOKE.Here's the lesson I've learned:Before buying any important software or hardware, check the internet for user reviews!Ignore the "editor" reviews since that's nothing more than corporate hype.

PS.If you look at the customer reviews in this section, see if you can find the one that sounds like a corporate ad.I'll bet that guy works for Symantec.;-)

2-0 out of 5 stars Great difficulty with Intrusion detection
There is a great deal of difficulty with installation errors especially with the Intrusion detection feature. Many of the home customers that I support are not sophisticated enough to go through the knowledge base solutions in order to fix these "permissions" problems. Also, sometimes they don't even work.I have to install and reinstall the software several times without success.
This is the first time in 14 years of using Norton products that I have had these problems.I am seriously considering switching to Zone Alarm Pro Security Suite. ... Read more

Product Description

Symantec VolumeManager 2.0 Reliable disk storage management for Windows NT and 2000 servers Symantec VolumeManager provides an efficient solution for Windows NT/2000 Server storage reconfiguration and disk storage management. Traditional disk storage management is a labor intensive process, often requiring systems to be taken offline for hours at a time, disabling users access to data and requiring tedious, manual intervention by system administrators. In distributed client/server environments, users demand that databases, mission-critical applications and other resources be continuously available and safe from the damage caused by disk failures. VolumeManager provides the tools to improve performance and ensure data availability and integrity through disk usage analysis/optimization, and in most cases allows for dynamic configuration to disk storage while the system is online and active. Symantec VolumeManager makes resizing of partitions and volumes quick and easy, enabling an administrator to simply shrink one partition or volume and enlarge another without ever having to perform a backup and restore. For instance, if the NTFS partition on a NT Server needs to be larger, the administrator can simply shrink one of the other partitions that have free space in it, and give that free space to the NTFS partition. The whole process takes only a few minutes to perform, and because of VolumeManager's SmartSector technology, the data will be kept completely intact. Symantec V ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Be careful
... getting the promised rebate from Symantec takes sustained effort. You have to mail the stuff, you have to track you get a response, you have to re-send stuff when they say you haven't sent the right stuff (you have) within 7 days, etc. etc. It's a deceitful practice, I bet their marketeers are rewarded for LOW redemptions.

2-0 out of 5 stars SystemWork Premier 2005 & Internet Security 2005
This is not exactly the same bundle, but I suspect the same issues would arise based on the other reviews. I am offering this in the hope that it may save others time and trouble:

1) Back your full system up via an image backup program before you begin, just in case. Perform all installs using the true Administrator account, not just an account in that group. Also, the installs may go easier if youturn off anti-spyware programs before beginning the installs. These products make lots of changes to the registry. Spybot, Spysweeper, the MS Anti-Spyware beta, and other programs that monitor registry changes will at best slow things down. Remember to turn the programs back on before going online.

2) Uninstall all prior versions of any Symantec products the programs replace or update. This is only supposed to be required for older version (2003 and before). Symantec always has problems with new installs.

3) After uninstalling and rebooting without error, install the Firewall first. If you do SystemWorks first, it may complain about the version of Anti-Virus installed when you get to the Firewall. Run live update for Internt Security bofore proceeding. This may have to be run a few times until no new updates are found and everything is installed.

4) Install SystemWorks. When it asks about changing the settings on your NIC (it may only do this if it sees a local network and a shared internet connection), CANCEL. I didn't, and was unable to get online for a few days. I had to resore from backup and reinstall to solve the problem. If the intent of the changes the program makes are to block online access, it is effective. It was not welcome, nor was the point of the chnges clearly stated.

5) Run Live Update, again and again until no updates are fonund.

As I have found for each of the past several versions, the programs appear to work well. Getting them to work and not cause trouble is more trouble than it should be.

I called Tech Suport in the hope that the Internet access problem could be easily resolved. I was routed to a pleasnt woman in (I would guess India or Pakistan) who had a terrible time with my accent. Her knowledge of the program was limited to whatever the knowledgebase she was reading said. Her job seemed to be to convince me that it was not Syymantec's fault. I thought her job was to help me resolve the problem. I was wrong.I was not convinced and nothing she suggested I do resolved the problem.

1-0 out of 5 stars A piece of Junk that will foul up your computer
I've had Norton products on my computers for over 10 years. And for most of those 10 years have experienced no problems whatsoever. Since the 2003 and 2004 version of this software program I have experienced SEVERE slowing down of my computer, hanging up of my computer when trying to shut it down, and prolonged start up times ALL of which were cured when I took this bloated software off my computer.

I'm not a software designer or a computer expert but am reasonably adept and skilled on the computer and can for the most part fix nearly every problem I encounter. I don't understand exactly WHY removing Norton solved my problems but I can tell you this: My computer has NEVER run so well and with so few problems. No crashes, no hanging up on shut down or start up, and lightening quick responsiveness once again.

The problems caused by this Norton program flummoxed me for about 6 months before I finally isolated Norton as the culprit. At first I rejected out of hand that a company as legendary and well regarded as Norton could be at the root of my problems, but decided out of frustration to delete the program and see how it impacted the multiple problems I was having.

Low and behold my problems miraculously vanished! I couldn't believe it! My daughter who had problems on start up worse than mine balked too at removing this program from her laptop but also discovered that the removal of Norton solved HER problems as well.

I told one of my employees what I'd discovered and he too deleted the program only to see all of his multiple problems disappear! He told me that he simply couldn't believe how good his computer was once again functioning.

I've replaced Norton System Works with Trend Micro's PC-Cillin and Zone Alarm both of which are highly regarded.

If you are having unexplained problems with your computer that your anti-virus program and spyware programs are not solving and if you have this bloated pig of a program on your computer then you need to delete it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible Installation .. doesn't work
Like the other reviewers said, this product doesn't work if you already have an old version installed. Tried several times, could never get it working properly. Finally gave up.

4-0 out of 5 stars I don't know about other reviewers...Mine works great
I have purchased a NSW Premier 2005 on Black Friday, Installation went smoothly without any problem, Only If you plan to install Norton Ghost(Only in NSW Premier) you need to do a boot.ini change as mentioned in symantech website that too if you have windows XP SP2(Like mine).

One button checkup is very good, which I have scheduled every week which removes unwanted cookies and temp files which helps a lot for maintaining system performance there are lot of utility software's which can be used to monitor system performance.

Regarding firewall still I prefer ZoneAlarm PRO, Ultimate software and works without any flaw. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Works....but at what cost?
I'm not sure if this is the same version that AOL gives to its memebers now but I had no problems with McAfee until I started playing games on my PC again. Actually any software that made heavy demands on my processor or graphics card experienced "hiccups" and some slowdown. It took me awhile to realize it but there is a program that McAfee runs in the backround (mcshield.exe) that runs even if McAfee itself is shut down (I guess to help monitor your system for incoming viruses). As soon as I uninstalled McAfee this problem disappeared. I definitely want comprehesive virus protection but not if the cost is not being able to enjoy games or movies on my system.

5-0 out of 5 stars Super! McAfee is BACK!
I'm a Norton user, have been since 2000.Studies were posted showing this was a better product.Next Windows XP had problems with McAfee and Norton beat them to the contract, developing a certified product first.HOWEVER, Norton is now the slacker. While on top, sucking up the money of millions, Norton is turning it's attention to other things.I love McAfee, now.Norton AntiVirus 2003 & 2004 will not catch the W32Spybot.Norton Internet Secrutiy will slow down your network, not allow you to EVER turn off Norton Internet Security, and cannot be uninstalled (must rip it out of the registry). In effect they take over your PC like NetZero, AOL, and much like a trojan. When I bought McAfee 9.0 2005 to replace Norton 2004 it caught the following:
- (2) Trojans: Exploit MhtRedir.gen
- (1) Trojan: Exploit CodeBase.gen
- (1) Virus: EICAR test file
Also, McAfee is very price considerate to their coupon people(...).I don't know what took them (4) years, but they are back in my book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Rebate woes
I thought about going on with a tirade about how McAfee offers rebates on their products that never arrive. But too many people have beaten me to the punch. There are whole websites devoted to people who spent six months trying to get a promised rebate from them. My story is not at all original, I bought the product and carefully included everything the rebate asked for, mailed the whole shebang in and waited...and waited...and waited and FINALLY received a letter in reply saying that my claim was rejected because of missing form xxx. "I'll have to take your word on that boys as you kept all the forms that I sent to yourselves instead of returning them with this note!!"
I could have fought them over this but why bother it's only $20 and I have no leverage.
Instead I'll just have to content my self with this little tirade...Oh and perhaps post alink to a company that lets you download a *FREE VERSION** of their commercial anti-virus software. [...]

3-0 out of 5 stars At least it works this time
I had given up McAfee back with Version 7.0 when I could not get it to work and received -- let's say less than adequate support.I went to Norton Antivirus & Personal Firewall with version 2004 when my OEM installed McAfee on my new desktop and OEM Norton on my laptop were ready to be upgraded.

The Norton software worked quite well for about 7 months. When I downloaded the updates around the first of Feb 05 from Symantec, I could not stop my laptop from going to the dreaded Blue Screen of Death (BSOD).After completely giving up on being able to get the Symantec to run on my laptop, I decided to give the McAfee Antivirus 2005 9.0 a try.At least it works and does not crash my system (yet). It does lack some of the intelligence of the Norton product. The Norton product had a nice feature to create rules to help recognize activities on the laptop that were not malicious. This kept it from constantly stopping or flagging activities that were ok.The McAfee lacks this degree of intelligence.

But, like I said, it runs.Which is far more than I can say for the 2/05 updates to Symantec's Norton products.

I may give my Norton a try again in a month or two to see if Symantec has fixed the problems. But I will not hold my breath.

I would prefer to have Microsoft get into the Antivirus and robust firewall arena so that we can have a product that we can at least have more confidence in its ability to play nice with the Windows kernal.

2-0 out of 5 stars Maybe it's good stuff (?)included printed material isn't
I bought a copy of 9.0 locally because I've always used McAfee and online updating is a bad joke with my connection. The first version, whatever it was, came preinstalled on my Gateway and came with no print documentation. Next up I bought a copy of 6.0 and got the print stuff, no real problems if a guy would just read directions I guess. I updated that one online but made mistakes (their system wasn't clear enough for me and the download took too much time)and decided to go and buy software this time based on the reputation I'd heard McAfee had.
I was pleased to read, on the box, that just about any PC out there could run this thing but I was dismayed to find next to no printed material in the box. The box itself almost has more info than the sorry little scrap of paper inside. Quick Start Guide they all it and that's about all you get, a quick run through on preparing your PC and installation of the product. I'm not very computer literate and this thing seems to be written for Windows XP (I'm using '98). Any real operations information seems to be contained on the CD-ROM (so you'd better not throw that away), I'm not entirely sure I can figure out how to open it up- I want it in print. Another thing I don't like is that the software seems to be autogeared to search and update on it's own- not one word in print anywhere about that.
Next time I may just see about using somebody else's software.

    Reviews (6)

1-0 out of 5 stars Poorly documented, extremely unstable, impractical.
I'll try and stay fairly objective about this. It will be difficult. I installed this on a brand spanking new Win2K SP4 machine. Here is what I've experienced.

    1. Poor to no support documentation for this product, either included or on their web site.

    2. Default security policy is not adequate. I've installed server apps that the wizard interface said were reccomended safe, which I know darned well aren't. ( therefore requiring rule customization for the apps to work correctly)

    3. Adding even basic firewall rules crashes this product, HARD.

    4. Does not play well with others, when it does crash, it can 't be shut down or restarted with the task manager, causing a REQUIRED reboot.

    5. I have crashed IE and had this product crash queitly without any alert, leaving my box exposed on the network.

    6. No ability to configure perpetual logging. You are limited to 2 megs of their binary log format, so essentially all someone has to do to blast your logs off your box is DOS your for about a minute.

(You can take snapshots of the logs, but that still positions you to loose data, particularly in a DOS situation.)

    7. Firewall rule base is not exportable, which means multiple hosts have to be indevidually configured. This fact alone makes it impractical in a small office environment.

    8. The interface is badly obfuscated. No less than six clicks just to get to the rule base.

    9. Their "Check my security" port scanner is bogus. Their port scanner only checks the lower 1024 ports, and depends on some sort of agent (which a good security policy would block anyway) to do the rest of the evaluation. So essentially you get a false "good" evaluation.

I'm in the IT business, and I explicitly DO NOT recommend this product to my customers. I will check amazon.com before purchasing anything from these folks again.

The only thing this product seems to do well is schill their 900 tech support phone number. But after all the time this product has wasted, I feel like they owe _me_ money.

1-0 out of 5 stars What a waste of time and money
    I don't recomend this product
after installing you need to activate it
this sounds easy enuff but is a hassle, after a few installs
Norton makes you call their tech suport to get activation numbers
and when I called, their server was down or something
so after push this push that wait on hold etc was told would have to call back again,
if you don't activate it then will work for just 15 days,
its a shame to pay for something that you can't use unless you have lots of time to waste

1-0 out of 5 stars Disaster
After installing Firewall 2005 I could not access the internet. Punching through menu after menu on the tech. assistance line I came up with an option that directly addressed my problem, so I guess I'm not the only one.Two service calls later, trying to struggle through language difficulties with tech. reps. from India, I was sent an e-mail which assured me would cure all my problems. An hour and a half later the problem still wasn't cured.

I object to Symantec making their problem mine, so I returned the software.

1-0 out of 5 stars software conflicts, no support
I've been a big fan of Norton products for years, but they've "improved" new versions with so many bells and whistles they don't work.I replaced a previous version of Norton Firewall with this one and had nothing but trouble (coflicts in Norton Anti-Virus).Tech support is non-existent. (A few emails from someone in India whose scripted reply didn't address my issues).I finally uninstalled this product and will return it.I reinstalled the older version and everything works fine.I doubt I will buy another Norton product, ever. They should atleast offer support for 30 days for new products. There is clearly a bug here if it won't work with existing Norton programs, so think twice before you leap.

5-0 out of 5 stars Symantec's Mortal Weapon
Norton Personal Firewall 2005 kicks Panda Software very, very far...
You NEED IT!!! BUY IT NOW!!! ... Read more
