1-0 out of 5 stars Stick with the older NAVs
Both my wife and I purchased this software near the end of 2004.At first, many of the "features" were just an annoyance, and I assumed that I would gain experience with them and move on.That never happened.
While online one day, Internet Security mysteriously disabled itself.I immediately got off the internet, but was unable to reactivate the program. After trying everything I could think of, including unistalling and reinstalling the program, I contacted Symantec. They advised, via email, me to do all the things I had already done (by the way, their online automated help is abysmal). This had the predicted result of not solving the problem.A clean boot and registry edit later, the program was still not functioning. At this time, my Outlook had ceased functioning until I removed the program, and several other programs on my machine returned errors stating that they had encountered problems and "needed to close".Prior to Internet Security crashing on me, I had never seen this error before.I found it distressing that the program designed to prevent any kind of Internet attack was also giving me this error.
I did some searching online and found a couple articles that said that Internet Security had been found to have a bug that allowed hackers to disable it over the web.Symantec assured me that this was not true.In the end, I completely removed the program and that solved most of my woes, however I am still recieving the same strange "this program has encountered a problem and needs to close" error with Adobe Distiller, and occasionally with other programs, however, only the Adobe Distiller seems to be completely fatally affected.
My wife has had problems with her Internet Security, and has also found that disabling it is the way to go.Fortunately, her's did not die completely as mine did.
Bottom line is, from my viewpoint, beware of this program.I never had any problems with earlier NAV versions, and I will be returning to them, although I was rather soured on Symantec as a whole for having produced such a faulty program.

2-0 out of 5 stars Effective, but VERY bulky
While it has a rather effective firewall, and comes with Norton Antivirus (which I'm actually rather fond of), the Security Suite has significantly slowed down my system. I'm currently using a Sony Vaio S-150 (which I bought at the end of this past August), and it takes about five minutes just to boot the system - in fact, I've taken to just hibernating, rather than shutting down completely.
The Antivirus is good, but "Internet Security" just isn't worth it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Voted With My Feet
After months of frustration with NIS 2004 and Symantec's pitiful tech. support, I finally threw in the towel. Went with PC-cillin Internet Security 2005 and am happy that I did so. The PC-cillin UI isn't as refined as NIS's but - you know! - the product works, the Anti-spam component integrates nicely with Outlook, and etc... No compatibility issues and my machine is running noticably quicker.

With any luck, I'll never have to be concerned with the quality of TrendMicro's tech. support. In any event, it couldn't possibly be worse than Symantec's. Here's Symantec's version of how to fix the Visual C++ Runtime Error for the AntiSpam plugin, so well documented in other customer reviews and on the Web:
1) Rename MSOUPLUG.DLL to MSOUPLUG.OLD. Trouble is, that's not a fix; it simply prevents the error message by disabling the very plug-in you were trying to fix.
2) Do a LiveUpdate for NIS 2005. Trouble is, I was running NIS 2004.
3) Remove and reinstall NIS 2004. A painful procedure that, in the end, doesn't work (and they know it).
4) Upgrade to NIS 2005. (Yeah! Right!)

Um... NIS 2004 a bad product. Very bad. Read the reviews here before you buy; we can't ALL be lying...

1-0 out of 5 stars Killed my Internet Access Speed
Loaded this suite on a newly built PC: AMD Athlon64 512Mb RAM, WinXP Home, running broadband cable - connection speeds were slower than my dialup while I had the program loaded.Uninstalled and PC ran like a champ... excepting the junk Symantec left on my PC... Couldn't fully uninstall since it had hooked nearly every program I had installed.Ended up having to reload Windows to get the machine to run without error and at optimum speed.

Would NOT recommend this program. It was a waste of my time and money.

1-0 out of 5 stars NIS 2004 - Total Garbage
Without repeating all the problems reported by other reviewers (I have experienced most of them and more) suffice it to say that amazon should take this off of their shelf and refuse to sell it. It is utter and complete garbage - I have never seen any software that behaves so poorly or is so poorly supported. Symantec / Norton should be ashamed of this product and should send a refund to all users of it. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Macaffe Firewall
I would never purchase Macaffee Firewall Plus 6.0 ever again. After I installed the product I could not connect to the Inernet using AOL.I called tech supportt ($2.95/minute) and could not resolve the problem after a twenty minute phone call.I uninstalled the Macafee Firewall and my AOL went back to working normal. If you are using XP service pack 1, do not purchase this product. If you do, you will spend endless hours trying to resolve the problems.Look elsewhere for a firewall product.

3-0 out of 5 stars Essentially the same as version 5.0.
McAfee's Personal Firewall Plus version 5.0 was almost unilaterally panned by everyone who reviewed it. I'm not sure the reviews are going to be much better this time around either.

As I stated in my title, version 6.0 is not much different from its predecessor. The only real change is the engine underneath the program. Only time will tell whether or not the improvements in this area are enough to satisfy the critics.

Before I get into anything else McAfee related, let me review the actual firewall program itself.

In May 2004, I finally moved out of the dark ages and moved from a dial-up connection to DSL. On the advice of a friend, I purchased a firewall program for the first time ever. Because I already used McAfee VirusScan (yes, I'm a glutton for punishment), I chose to buy Personal Firewall Plus version 5.0.

Unlike many of the reviews I read, I did not have any system problems as a result of installing or uninstalling version 5.0. So far, version 6.0 has not given me any problems either. The interface is very easy for me to use, the settings give me just enough adjustibility to do what I need to do, and I have never had a problem with the program starting itself when I boot-up my computer.

For someone like me, who is completely port illiterate, McAfee Personal Firewall Plus has done exactly what it is suppose to do: block the bad stuff from reaching my computer.

If I was rating the firewall only, I would give it a 5-star rating since I have never had a problem with it and it does what I need it to do.

Ah, but this is McAfee we are talking about. And when you buy a McAfee product, you also end up buying the stupidity of McAfee. There are three reasons why McAfee Personal Firewall Plus only gets a 3-star rating from me:

REASON 1: McAfee has a habit of messing up their programs through the update features, especially the Security Center pop-up advertisement, uh.... I mean feature, that automatically comes with all McAfee products. So far, none of their update bugs have affected me where Firewall Plus is concerned (wish I could say the same about their VirusScan product). But this is McAfee we're talking about, and I have full confidence that sooner or later they'll figure out how to screw up Firewall Plus during an update.

REASON 2: As reported by many a reviewer, McAfee's customer service department is a joke. Their live instant messaging service has yet to ever resolve a customer's problem (an overstatement, I'm sure...... but not by much). And their paid service isn't much better. I know many people who refuse to purchase anything McAfee because of past experiences with their customer service department. Can't say I really blame them.

REASON 3: I cannot stand the blatant McAfee advertisement that is known as Security Center. The splash screen that appears everytime you start your computer (and for which McAfee refuses to allow us to turn off) is nothing more than a pop-up advertisement that you pay to have installed on your computer. This splash screen is oh-so-nice in telling you what McAfee products you have yet to install on your computer. It doesn't matter if you are using a competitor's product. Security Center doesn't bother to check to see. It just forever tells you that you don't have McAfee this or McAfee that.

Bottom line: If you are having problems with Personal Firewall Plus 5.0, and you haven't already thrown McAfee out of your window for it, then go ahead and upgrade to 6.0. Otherwise, it's not worth spending the time or money to get this version. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Way Better Than Trend Micro PC-Cillin
I was using Trend Micro PC-Cillin and kept having viruses. I could not figure out whyuntil I read an article in PC World that told that Trend does not detect or remove spyware/adware. Knowing that viruses can come in with spyware/adware I realized that my problem was in part the protection I bought. Taking a friend's advice who sets up computer systems and networks them for a living I bought the stand alone Norton Bundle of Anti Virus and Personal Firewall. I must say I have never been more pleased than I have with Norton. It has kept me protected solidly and I feel it was worth every penny and do not forsee ever switching again. Being told by a co worker i was not smart to have switched from Trend I decided to double check some of Norton's scan reports by doing the free scan at the trend site and the program that before was telling me i had all these viruses was now backing up what Norton told me and saying i was totally clean. Go figure. It might be not as easy to install or use as Trend claims to be but when you want computer protection you want SOLID protection not just the easiest thing to use.

1-0 out of 5 stars Buggy and tech support is virtually non-existent.
Buggy buggy buggy! On one computer, I can only get NPF to load on 1/3 of all boots (warm or cold). On my other computer, the central (yet separate) updating program -- Symantec LiveUpdate -- automatically CHANGES its connectivity options ITSELF nearly every day, which causes the "LiveUpdate settings" to become "corrupt," making updating either NPF or NAV impossible unless. . . .

One goes through a cumbersome process of scanning the entire hard drive(s) for LiveUpdate's configuration settings, removes them manually, goes to the control panel to reconfigure NEW settings, and then reboots. This works (temporarily) to fix the problem, but it takes about 10 minutes.Do that 10-12 times per week, and you can imagine the frustration factor.

Periodically, this "quick" fix fails, and I have to go through a bizarrely convoluted "uninstall" process for Symantec LiveUpdate. This LENGTHY process is outlined in a "repair" document that, when the screen type is set to "smallest," requires 6 (SIX) pages of paper to describe and about 45 minutes to actually execute.

When that "repair" no longer works, Symantec tech "support" suggests uninstalling and reinstalling everything (that's their solution to nearly every problem -- they seem to have next to zero troubleshooting expertise or, perhaps, zero WILL to help), a process that can take as long as an hour and a half, depending on your CPU clock speed.

I've mentioned the near-uselessness of their email "tech" support.Frankly, I see no "tech" in their "support."Invariably, one is directed to one of a gazillion lengthy online documents that spells out a time-consuming process to keep the customer running in circles, only to find, ultimately, that there is NO way to fix the problem other than UNINSTALLING everything (remember, there are three components here -- NPF, NAV, and LiveUpdate) and then reinstalling ALL THREE.A 1.5 hour process, at least, as I noted above.

I'm completely fed up with Symantec, especially with their repeated "apologies for any inconvenience. . . ."What?"Any" inconvenience? How about the very REAL and repeatedly tangible wastes of time caused not only by buggy software but by their inability and/or unwillingness to actually troubleshoot an issue or fix the bugs in their software rather than simply playing their default "uninstall and reinstall" card.If they truly were sorry, they'd fix the software rather than directing the customer to "keep. . . running" (hat tip to Ralph Ellison).

I'm no programmer, but even I could give that "techincal support advice" (I use the terms loosely).I have no alternative software solutions to suggest, but I strongly warn users to avoid this software like the plague that it is.

Ironically, the anti-virus software works like a charm (it has intercepted dozens of viral emails), and the firewall is impressive in its capabilities and has been excellent. But the inability to keep the products updated because of unauthorized software auto-reconfigurations and subsequent file corruptions thereby, added to the dozens of hours needed to keep that update component functioning properly have made this software and Symantec's lack of useful tech support infuriating.

Update to Symantec 2005?
Not while I'm alive. . . .

4-0 out of 5 stars It's great if you keep it updated...
We use this at work and it is by far the best antivirus program out there. At home, I use the Macintosh version. The best I can say is that there are so many virii on the Window's platform you'd be silly not to have something like this installed. If you're tired of virii, worms, trojans, spyware, etc..., there is another solution. Get a Mac. The piece of mind you get knowing that the operating system is nearly impossible to infect or crack outweighs the tiny learning curve in switching to a different operating system. How many virii have I gotten at my Mac at home in the last 6 months? Zero. How many at work? At least one a week via email. Even our CIO (Information officer) is putting in a proposal as I write this to migrate the entire server and desktop system to the Mac OS X platform, and we're a fortune 500 company. The money saved alone in downtime from systems getting infected (if you can't work, you can't produce!), more than pays for the minor expense of making the switch. NAV is good. But unless you keep your virus definitions up to date, you're asking for a heap of trouble. And how many users really take the time to update their definitions even when the program prompts them to do so? I can count them on one hand. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I can see all the wireless access points in my area
I was having all kinds of trouble with Windows knocking me off my wireless access point router.Whenever it detected a signal turn on in my area, I would lose my connection -- TALK ABOUT FRUSTRATING!!!When I use Wireless Network Ignition, I could visually see ever access point that my laptop could detect.I could then click on my wireless router and LOCK my signal to my access point.Since buying this product, I have not been knocked off my network.(The AP lock works just as well when I take it on the road with me too).

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to use, excellent software
I've owned and used BlackIce for over 7 years now. In all it's upgrades, it has been a non-intrusive, easy to use and effective software product.
The honest truth about this software is: It does a fantastic job of logging internet intrusions and STOPPING them. There is no combination of intrusion attempts that can get past this product and I've tried over the years. The interface is easy to understand and quite minimal for a product of such stature. It also boasts an effective internal application protection feature, which I don't really use (because my computer isn't full of trojan, virus, or otherwise and I never install what I don't know). Of all the other reviews below, the reviewer from Petaluma, Ca is the honest and accurate one. My experiences with the product are similar to his experiences. Be warned that some people who like the FREE ZoneAlarm, make reviews for Blackice which simply are not true. There are security reviews, you can find on the internet, which fully test Blackice and find it's a very solid and strong product which has no equal.

2-0 out of 5 stars I used this before I discovered Linux
With Linux, you can do anything you can do with BlackIce and 5,000 things you can't. Worth a few days learning how to write filters to block out things.

1-0 out of 5 stars Bad Investment
This Software is not worth the money or the trouble. I had problems since day one when I installed this piece of junk. My start up programs would not load when the application protection feature is on. Even talking to the support people still haven't got the damn software to work the way is suppose to. Piece of advice. Do not purchase this piece of junk. Stick to Symantec there are far better with their software than what this people is. This BlackIce piece of junk it ain't worth the time or the money. This is the worst software I ever bought.

1-0 out of 5 stars Beware this product!
I recently purchased this product. It did not function.repeated e-mails to the manufacturer got no response.Purchase at your own risk.

5-0 out of 5 stars Many Biased Opinions
I've used Blackice for a long time and I'm very satisfied. So many people get confused with the older versions of this software and the latest (3.6) and say that it can't filter outbound traffic. The latest version does do this very well.I've tried every internet firewall test i could find and blackice passed all of them 100%, including gibson research corporation's shields up! and leaktest.I did have to manually tweak the config file to get the thing to block ICMP pings, but it was easy.I especially like the interface, which is straightforward and doesn't use any flashy graphics to look good, it's just a piece of software that sits there and does its job. ... You may reassign a Windows CAL from one device to another device, or from one user to another user, provided the reassignment is made either (a) permanently away from the one device or user or (b) temporarily to accommodate the use of the Windows CAL either by a loaner device, while a permanent device is out of service, or by a temporary worker, while a regular employee is absent. By having two types of Windows CALs, you are able to use the model that makes sense for your organization. For example, purchasing a Windows User CAL might make more sense if your company has a need for employees to have roaming access using multiple devices. Windows Device CALs may make more sense if your company has multiple-shift workers who share devices. ... Read more
