5-0 out of 5 stars This is a FANTASTIC set of tutorial disks!
I have taken quite a few online and computer based training courses. This is, by far, one of the best sets that I've come across so far!

Thanks to these discs, I was able to pass (with flying colors I might add) the MOUS Word 2000 and Excel 2000 certification tests!

They are fairly interactive and easy to follow.

I look forward to trying other tutorials from this company! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Better than MS OFFICE
I've used both MS Office (with Word, Excel, etc) and find that Lotus Smartsuite (Particularly WordPro) is much easier to use, while still offering just as many features that one could get from MS Word.WordPro can also easily open up "MSWord" files, as well as ASCII files automatically, without doing any importing, converting, or any other goofy stuff. When saving a file, you also have the option of saving it in any format you want.Lotus 123 is simple to use, and like Wordpro, it can also open up or save files in any format. This is especially useful if/when others send you MSWord files, or Excel files. All the Smartsuite programs run very clean. Oh yes, Organizer has to be the very best Organizer software on the market. It is supurb. Last, but far from least is the fact that, since it is not Microsoft software, the liklihood that you will have a virus or worm aimed at your software is greatly reduced. For the price, Smartsuite and all it's programs runs circles around MS Office.

4-0 out of 5 stars Lotus Smartsuite 9.7 - dated but still functions well
Lotus Smartsuite is the Rodney Dangerfield of Software suites - it doesn't get much respect. I was worried that IBM would ruin Lotus when it bought them, and they haven't; but it would be great if they did a REAL upgrade to this product. It is the only real alternative to MS Office - andd better in many respects. In general, the components are much more elegant - WordPro is much better than MS Word. 123 is good but could use a facelift - Excel is more functional.

I bought this upgrade specifically to upgrade my older version of Lotus Approach. While little has changed in this software in the past five years, I still use Approach for most of my database functions - I have Access and Filemaker Pro on my computer as well, but Approach is WAY more intuitive than either of the others. I use a shareware program called Time and Chaos for my PIM so I didn't load Organizer, and Powerpoint is my presentation software of choice, so I also left out Freelance, as well. Come on Lotus - bring Smartsuite into the 21st Century! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Smart, Simple, Beautiful
Formatting is quickest of all major suites: Lotus uses InfoBox, an ever-open panel used in professional graphics programs. WordPro 9.x opens and saves Word and WordPerfect documents. Tables are superior to Word, file security too. Approach is a database manager for non-professional user (everybody out of corporations with IT depts). If you want beautiful documents, particularily for color printers or for converting into HTML and Adobe Acrobat formats, you design them in SmartSuite. Some editions include Lotus Notes client, a prime e-mail program. Ease of use does not compromise elegant views.

5-0 out of 5 stars Better than believed
The review that they it doesn't convert very well is true but I make newspapers, brochures, integrated graphical reports dropping in the grapher and spreedsheets by copy and paste. It isn't a main stream program but as long as I was converting only text I was usually Ok with some minorediting. OVerall worth it if you want a meetier word processor and youdon't have to constantly share files.

3-0 out of 5 stars You'll LOVE everything about it, except...
First, the price is, in my opinion, too high. Second, the Lotus does NOT allow you to save/open to the Microsoft Word format and you will have difficulty when you try to open some word documents with the Lotus Word Pro. Third, if you do any work with Adobe Acrobat Reader 4x, Good Luck. Myexperience with having both Acrobat Reader and Word Pro open at the sametime was similar to pouring gasoline over my head, and striking a match tolook at my watch to see what time it was. Fourth, the Lotus does cause yourcomputer to crash, applications will lock up and when you boot up, it willhang. I'm glad I have Norton Utilities with Norton Crash Guard to isolateamd identify what was causing the problems. On the positive side, Iabsolutely love the Lotus Smart Suite Millennium. The Word Pro kicksMicrosoft's Office 2000. The Organizer simply destroy's Microsoft's intheir Office 2000. All in all, the Lotus Smart Suite Millennium wasdevistating to Micresoft's Office 2000, feature for feature. I found theLotus easier to get around, easier to intergrate with the web, and loadedwith practical features that allowed me to generate very professionaldocuments and presentations. It's not that the Microsoft was bad, but itjust doesn't compare with the Lotus. However, I feel Lotus MUST make someserious decisions about their compatibility with the rest of the computingworld. If they don't, the Millennium Edition may be their last. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Not as Advertised
The package does not include an instruction book as displayed in the ad. I received the CD only without the security code necessary to install it. The marketplace seller includes a coupon to request a hardware device which he claims is out of stock at the moment.

4-0 out of 5 stars WordPerfect YES, but the rest.....
Here is the skinny on Corel Office Suite:
WP: even now it is still head and shoulders above Word.Word is NOT easier to use as some have said. The best Point of WPerfect is the reveal codes function.I have used it many times to correct some [] Word format document which has insisted on blowing up to 10mb's when the document is only a 3-page document.
Yes, I repeat I used WordPerfect to fix word.
All of the functions with the exception of `the send' to email in WordPerfect are simpler and better thought out than that of Word. Pocket Oxford Dictionary and Corel's Application Recovery Manager are MUCH better than the equivalents in MS Word.I particularly love the way the Dictionary is implemented, you can doubleclick a word and it will bring the entry in the dictionary, including common usage almost as indispensable as reveal codes.
Advanced voice recognition software and microphone help are features I have no use for, but my great-uncle, (who is 87), swears by it.In his case though, I had to get the Law version, (Harvard lawyer).Personally I can't see how it can be simple to use.But then again my diction isn't the best.
Grammatik, hmm what can I say about that, well it is actually useful EVEN if you're not a businessman. This is unlike MS Word, which is really geared toward business sentence structure only.
Bitstream Font Navigator is probably one very underused tool.Personally I love it.
Adobe PDF publishing is a wonderful add-on.And the HTML capabilities are much improved, though I still find Notepad to be the best HTML editor.
XML, SGML seems to be handled correctly, but I wonder.
OH and the keyboard shortcuts are usually better thought out than that of Word, though most are the same, in fact most are Windows default.

The send to mail would be nice if it would work nicely with Outlook or Outlook Express. The Perfect Expert (WP8) and descendants are actually USEFUL unlike that [] paperclip of MS.The templates and the question/answer of Perfect Expert actually help make a hard or unusual or uncommon report, form, etc. easy to make and to do it correctly.
As for the rest of the Suite:
Presentations: Is almost comparable to PowerPoint

Quattro Pro: is NOT as good as Excel, so if you need a spreadsheet as your main application then I highly recommend MS Office. If your needs are Word processing or SIMPLE spreadsheet functions then and only then is Quattro for you.And even then Excel is better.

CorelCENTRAL: well . . .the previous versions where a flop, with good reasons, I am still evaluating the one in 2002 suite.Personally I think a true Outlook replacement would be much better, this would include the ability to just click on a button to send a document in WP to whomever you wanted.I am not sure if this is possible (read EASY) in the present suite.I do know you can, just not how easy it is, and therefore if I can teach my secretary (and other employee's) to use it.

As for the relational database, hmmmm well, its easier to use than Access but not as powerful, on the other hand if something is powerful but not easy to use, its useless.MS AND Corel need to work on their respective relational databases. In this respect I would say that for me MS is better but then again I find that even now, 8 years after the venerable 6.1b WP suite and office 95, I STILL need both MS office AND Corel WP suites to be functional in my office.

Fact is that for my varied uses, I have to say I need WordPerfect, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, (though I kinda lean toward Presentations now), and Outlook.

If you can find WP for about 2/3rds of the price and you're a small business, then WP is better for you. If you absolutely need the compatibility with MS than OpenOffice is better for you.
IF you're an editor, publisher, author, student then WP is better for you, BUT you will have to have as a standby either OpenOffice or MS Office.

If you're a big business, then you have no choice but to get MS Office.

If you're an accountant, or deal with complicated spreadsheets, than Excel, and therefor MS office is a must.

If your in marketing . . .hmmm, Presentations could be good enough, at least in 2000 version.I am still evaluating the 2002 version.I would lean toward PowerPoint and Word, only because it will be compatible with everybody else in the company, and if there is a marketing dept. then you're a big business.

If you're an engineer: Use WP, and give the pointy haired bosses and marketing air heads some headaches.I mean hell, they do it to you, you might as well have fun with them.AND you will love the reveal codes function.

I find the other add-ons of the suites to be useful.Usually I find that I prefer the Corel version over the MS version.Like the PhotoEditor, I prefer Photo house (as a simple picture editor). But that is partly just what you are accustomed to using.Photo house is better than photoeditor but not enough to brag about.

I hope this helps you make an informed decision. Most of this advice is from experience.

3-0 out of 5 stars Still a good product; suffers from incompatibility w/Office
It's a testimony to how far this once great produce has fallen that there are only 3 reviews posted as of my writing.

WP SUITE CONS
I'm a WP user from back when it and Lotus 1-2-3 were THE killer apps.Though I own WP 2000, I tend to use MS Office. Here's why:
* Excel is far more powerful and has a better interface than Quattro Pro
* PowerPoint is head-and-shoulders easier to use than Presentations
* CorelCentral PIM is virtually worthless compared to Outlook
* Presentations does not preserve formatting of PowerPoint files
* WordPerfect struggles to preserve formatting for Word docs if there are tables (particularly with merged cells) or outlines in the Word doc

WP SUITE PROS
* Paradox is an easy tool for learning about relational databases; it is far easier to use than Access, though not as powerful
* WordPerfect drawing tools are superior to MS Word drawing tools
* WordPerfect is still better for laying out complex documents; the 'reveal codes' feature alone is invaluable--why didn't MS copy that somewhere along the way?
* It costs less
* Can create PDFs (without buying Acrobat) from the WP print menus

PURCHASING RECOMMENDATION
If you do not have to exchange files with MS Office users and do not need advanced spreadsheet or advanced presentations features, get WP Suite. WordPerfect is as good as Word. And Quattro Pro and Presentations have great basic and good intermediate functionality.

If you regularly exchange files with MS Office users but do not need to put tables or other complex formatting in your Word document, get WordPerfect.

But if you really need file compatibility with Office and/or advanced spreadsheet and presentation capability, Office is a better choice than WordPerfect. But there is an alternative...

AN ALTERNATIVE
As much as I would like WordPerfect to survive as a viable alternative to Microsoft's empire, Corel is on its last leg and WP has steadily lost market share over the last 10 years to the point that I don't see how Corel can afford to produce and support it.Sun's StarOffice ($... or available as an opensource application under the name OpenOffice) is a great alternative to MS Office.StarOffice does a far better job of exchanging docs with MS Office.

5-0 out of 5 stars WordPerfect 2002 is ok
WordPerfect Office 2002 competes directly with Microsoft's Office Suite and as far as features go, WordPerfect certainly has all those you need in this type of program.

A 430 page User Guide book is included, with an appendix after each section, it is very detailed without being complicated, and the explanations are clear.

WordPerfect allows the cursor can be placed in any position on the page, so text may start at any point in a document without having to use the Enter and Tab keys.

Tables are simple to use and the contents are easily editable, you can add columns of figures, and deal with them as you would in a spreadsheet program. You can open a table formatting bar in WordPerfect 10 to aid in this so you don't have to open a new program just to do some sort of calculation. Use the right-click options, they allow a lot of shortcuts to useful points.

Viewing text in different fonts is achieved using the drop-down text box, where it can be viewed in the highlighted font. A really useful idea, and one not utilised in enough programs.

The help file is extremely useful and sits at one side of the interface. The whole thing has the feel of a Web editing program, and, as such, is very simple to follow and is very intuitive.

Columns are easily inserted at any point using a drop down menu to insert as many as you want.

This is an easy to learn word-processing program that can output to HTML or PDF, and can be saved in a large number of different formats.

Quattro Pro 10 is the spreadsheet section of this suite. I am not the sort of person who regularly uses programs that deal with numbers, but most of what I require here is very intuitive and straightforward.

This program uses the idea of notebooks to separate the different sheets, and they can even be secured by passwords for privacy. An automatic backup facility can be set to save at intervals convenient to the user.

The pre-set calculations are very extensive and would probably be more than sufficient for the average user of this type of program. Cells can be moved by dragging and dropping between notebooks, or even copied and pasted, as well as having the format changed without affecting the actual figures in each cell.

Cell colour, widths, heights etc are all easily editable from menus. Many different file formats can be opened with Quattro Pro 10, including Microsoft Excel, or Lotus 1-2-3, or even Quicken .qif files.

Links to notebooks can be used to update information quickly, from within other notebooks or even WordPerfect tables.

Spreadsheets can also be viewed as graphic charts and tied to database programs such as Paradox 10 (also included), which is mainly used to deal with reports. Paradox 10 can also be used to convert tables and reports to HTML documents which can be dynamic and work with any browser, by retrieving data from your server automatically.

Corel Presentations 10 is a slide/presentation show program with many important features. It can present your show using embedded fonts, and importing and exporting Power Point files has been enhanced, as well as pdf support.

Working with text, titles and even subtitles as well is possible. Several drawing tools are supplied, and bitmapped images are also able to be edited, and sound files, either .wav or midi, may be inserted into the presentation, and even video too.

Corel Presentation 10 can be used to publish to the web in HTML format and .pdf as well as other programs such as WordPerfect, or even emailed.

CorelCENTRAL 10 is a collection of PIM features rolled into one. This consists of a calendar, card file, memo, and an alarm feature. An email client and a groupware program allows you to access and add tasks to other address books.

Corel Application Recovery Manager opens automatically if there is a program failure and a wizard walks you through choices about what to do. Paradox 10 already has a built in feature for this. A Location Manager, which is a component of Corel A.R.M. will open your WordPerfect Office applications even if they have been moved or damaged.

Corel Connector is a web client so you can connect to the internet straight from the program and find information or browse Corel web sites or post questions to Corel newsgroups.

Pocket Oxford Dictionary with 30,000 words has been integrated into WordPerfect Office.

Corel WordPerfect Office 2002 Pro, also includes the software and speaker headphone for Dragon Naturally Speaking5. If you are not a touch typist, and have the time to get the program to recognise your speech patterns, you can do everything without having to touch the keyboard. Not only do you get straight text from speech, but formatting is available through voice commands too.

Included are more than 1000 fonts, 12,000 clipart images and symbols, and also over 200 photos.

Bottom Line.

Don't just look at this program because it is possibly cheaper than the opposition, but because it achieves so much. It is a worthy adversary for Microsoft's Word program, and now it is being bundled and sold with new computers, I am sure that WordPerfect 2002 has the ability to compete very favourably with any other word processors, it certainly comes with enough features.

This is a really useful set of programs rolled into one, with plenty of help available. You should be able to use this program for anything you need to do in an office situation. Corel have gone all-out to make this a great program, and it is worth investigating.

2-0 out of 5 stars WordPerfect: I have not forgotten you! But?
For years I have had a secret relationship with you WP, because something about you kept on bringing me back. Microsoft Word to tell you the truth is easier than WordPerfect, but when it comes to grammar and spell check WordPerfect has better technologies. The thing is MS Office offers more in functionality and flexibility. Seriously though, Corel is selling some dysfunctional applications at an overkill, some software good but too much of a cost for me. The four applications thing just does not work for me. Those Standard editions of Office suites should be scrapped why not have Professional and Premium Editions instead. Another thing, Microsoft has really improved in the grammar and spell check technologies since the release of Office 2000. So for those people who want to make a decision, I would rather go with MS Office. Quattro Pro I think is one of the worst spreadsheet programs ever created, you have to do too much formatting of cells manually, and it just does not have much flexibility as Excel and integration with other apps from its own suite. Corel Central is the most boring PIM in computer history and most unused, its not that easy to use as Microsoft Outlook, now that application is very amazing when it comes to organizing your life! Corel Presentations is very good, I give that application an A+, and the sound effects are awesome! But PowerPoint still has a lot of advantages! I like WordPerfect Office a lot, but MS Access is easy to use, Paradox is like your actually creating a database with pen and paper. MS Office may cost a little more but better functionality, ease of use, flexibility and integration across all the applications. Corel needs to work on integration across the applications, that's a major element in ease of use. Microsoft just needs to work on better compatibility with previous versions of their applications e.g. Access and Publisher and that's also a major element in ease of use. So far, only one application sounds good, Corel Presentation. People want ease of use and that's what I think software companies should focus more on! So sorry Corel, MS Office is just the easier way to go. I'm not bias, if you find the functionality you need in WP don't pay any attention to me, show proof and speak your points! ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

Whether saying "no" to Microsoft's hegemony or keeping the tradition of sleek and powerful software alive, users moving on up to WordPerfect Office 2002 Professional Edition can take pride in their choice. The core suite includes WordPerfect 10, the Quattro Pro 10 spreadsheet program, Corel Presentations 10, the Paradox 10 database, and the CorelCENTRAL 10 personal information manager (PIM); each of these meets or exceeds the qualities of their competitors.

Accessories like the Pocket Oxford Dictionary and Corel's Application Recovery Manager make life easier for users and administrators alike. The advanced voice recognition software and microphone help eliminate the risk of repetitive stress and improve one's diction simultaneously (mumblers need not apply).

Pretty much every file type we've ever heard of can be imported and exported, so longtime users of other software should have a relatively seamless transition. The look and feel will be familiar to users of Microsoft Office, though quirks in hot keys, commands, and toolbars will take a few days to master. This might be the only reason not to switch from Microsoft--inertia can be difficult to overcome and novice users may resent learning new tools. However, the strengths, including Adobe PDF publishing, Microsoft's VBA scripting, Web compatibility, and networked file sharing, should convince most open-minded users to consider the merits of WordPerfect Office 2002. --Rob Lightner ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Newbie to Pro, this is for you
I have been a WP user for a few years now, and was initally hesitant about upgrading to 10. However, it has been a very worthwhile experience. All the features that make WP great are still here, including, of course, the inimitable and invaluable Reveal codes, and several features have been markedly improved. Publish to PDF is now very good indeed, a feature that for the vast majority of users will save a significant sum of money by obviating any need to purchase PDF-generating software. The templates and macros that come with it mean that even first-timers can quickly feel at home, and Corel's incredibly generous licensing means that if you own practically any wordprocessing suite, you're elgible for this incredibly powerful package. Unlike one other reviewer, my installation was completely trouble-free. If you're looking for an escape from Redmond's clutches, or if you are looking for a really powerful, flexible office suite, or both, you can't go past WPO 2002

1-0 out of 5 stars A BIG disappointment
I'd like to give this no stars at all.

As a long time user of Corel programs, it pains me to say Corel's Office2002 program is by far the worst software I have ever used. It is plagued with problems, among them:

1. The serial number accompanying the Upgrade program is incorrect. You have to call Technical Services to get a valid one.

2. Corel says the program requires 128MB RAM. At that level, the program will not run unless you close all other programs, including the Windows status bar. Also, it will not print documents. I had to buy more RAM for my system to resolve these problems.

3. If you are installing it over an older version of Corel's Office, both versions appear, and conflict with each other. When I uninstalled the old version after installing the new one, the new program wouldn't run. This required another expensive call to Technical Services to resolve.

4. Corel is in Canada - calls to them are charged at the international rate. Also, several times I got "all our service representatives are in a staff meeting, please call later" during the day (0800-1700 Eastern Time). The phone charges to get the information needed to install the program and get it at least minimally functional cost almost as much as the price of the program.

5. The advertizing for the program says Paradox will open Microsoft Access files and Presentations will open Harvard Graphics files. It does not say these functions are not in the normal installation procedure. Corel will send instructions, not included in the original documentation, to install the extra import filters needed to open Harvard Graphics. They will also send instructions for a very complex, time consuming procedure needed to convert an Access file every time you use it.

6. The program is very unstable - it crashes on an average of every 30 minutes. When it crashes, it usually crashes the entire system, and the automatic save does not work - you lose everything from your last manual save.

7. You have to open the Windows Task Manager and manually close the "Printserver" multiple times while using one of the application programs.

8. You cannot print multiple documents in one continuous operation. You have to close the WordPerfect program, and reboot the computer before and after each "print" operation.

9. WordPerfect 10 is incapable of opening older WordPerfect documents that contain graphic images. It won't open the document, and corrupts the file so that it is unreadable by any program. I lost a half dozen files with a logo before I realized what was happening. When I need to update one of those files, I have to transfer it to another system with an older version of WP, or open it in MSWord, delete the figure(s), save the text, then recreate the figure(s) in WP10.

5-0 out of 5 stars footnotes . . .
Apart from "reveal codes", without which I feel lost, one of the things I like best about WordPerfect is that it manages to get 98% of footnotes on the right page - as against Word which is always putting footnotes on the next page, or spilling them on to two - and on occasions three - pages. If you prepare camera-ready copy, or if you are writing a thesis and don't want to annoy the examiner unnecessarily, this is a big plus.

4-0 out of 5 stars Wordperfect beats Word Hands Down
This review is strictly on the WordProcessor.I've yet to encounter anything good that Word does near as well as Wordperfect. Tables, formating, merges etc.

If you want to promote capal tunnel syndrome with obsessive mouse use, WORD has a substantial advantage. Its fun to watch the WORD 'experts'.With an absolute minimum use of quickkeys, the WORD Expert is constantly putting their offhand on the hip, leaning back and fooling with the mouse- a true model of efficency {NOT!}. Mircosoft assumes the user is too dumb to learn quick-keys and insteads touts "Ease-of-Use" mouse work.

WORD is like AOL, everywhere and charging prices based on the label rather than the quality.

4-0 out of 5 stars WordPerfect: Better Control In Document Prep
Anyone who is serious about controlling what happens with a document should choose WordPerfect. It is the most complete wordprocessor when it comes to control of page design.Don't let the ease-of-use people fool you.The so-called trade-off for ease with Microsoft Word (which I do not concur with) will result more often with frustration when it is time to assemble something serious like a thesis or resume. If you want a more feature-rich application, WordPerfect is the one to choose. If you are afraid of controlling the structure of your document, let someone who isn't do your typing for you, but have them do it in WordPerfect. ...
