5-0 out of 5 stars Good but save your money
Okay maybe if your connection is slow or you don't have access to broadband you can buy this CD,but if not why bother?
OpenOffice.org is freely available online as is Firefox.
I use and love both so don't get me wrong here, but the price is a little too much but then again it goes to the developers.
Ooo is a great alternative to Microsoft Office and even Star Office. It does everything the same for free! I often do my homework and essays with Ooo Writer. And Firefox is what I am using to write this very review! It's one of the best Mozilla-based browsers besides the Mozilla Suite/Netscape 7 itself.

5-0 out of 5 stars Open Office and FireFox, wonderful software, excellent value
Open Office reads and writes in MS Office 97/2000/XP formats for Word, Excel and PowerPoint and can export documents to PDF format.
One of the best advantages is inexpensive upgradability.I purchased Office 95 ($400+ dollars) in 1996.When Office 97 came out, my Office 95 software would not open office 97 formatted documents.I toughed it out till I purchased Office 2000 ($500+ dollars) now Office XP and 2003 have came out (do we see a pattern here)?I suspect that it will be much less expensive to buy a $30 upgrade to Open Office to read and writedocuments created by upcoming versions of Micro$oft Office.
FireFox: "ad ware" resistant, pop up blocker and tabbed browsing... love it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great products, great price, great source!
Open Office and Firefox are two of the very best of their kind. Both give users the ability to work with the same files, websites and so on that they're used to, without the worries of bad macros, spyware, and other problems associated with the proprietary products these replace.Better yet, they're both faster, more powerful, and more up-to-date than those old dinosaurs.Perhaps best of all, these programs look and operate the same on Windows, Mac, Linux and other platforms, making it much easier if you or your family needs the flexibility.

The fact you can buy this set for a tiny fraction of the cost of just the Office suite it replaces is almost secondary to all the other features -- Open Office would be tough competition for Microsoft even if it cost the same as MS Office.

Linspire, the publisher of this collection, is highly respected for making open-source software widely accessible; if you like Open Office and Firefox, their Linspire Linux is among the best.

5-0 out of 5 stars Open Source Packaged and Marketed as It Deserves
OpenOffice.org and Firefox are both fantastic products lacking one simple ingredient. Despite their technical merits, the marketing efforts for these products have not been impressive... until now.

With Oooff, that has all changed. The products are finally sold next to other respected name brands on store shelves and through online retailers, like Amazon.com. Oooff is expanding the distribution channel of these open source products. Oooff will expose computer users that pay large sums for Microsoft Office and use the vulnerable, dull and underpowered Internet Explorer to the powerful alternatives they didn't know existed. Without a doubt, making open source software accessible is the first step in restoring a healthy and competitive software industry.

Oooff is a great idea and contains excellent products. This is a good buy and will give you the comfort of knowing that by purchasing this product,OpenOffice.org and Firefox will have an even brighter future. Kudos to everyone at Linspire, and the developers for OpenOffice.org and Mozilla Firefox! :)

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for Windows and Linux
If you use Windows this is the way to go.Free web browser that more than 10 Million people worldwide have switched over to.None of the security problems that Internet Explorer has.Popups blocked out of the box without not extra software. The office side saves you over 200 dollars paying for Microsoft Office. And it is completely compatible with Office formatted documents and more.If you have a college student on a budget that needs a office suite then this is for them. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent suite, but instruction somewhat hard to come by
I've read recently that Corel is essentially giving up the fight to win control over the office suite software market. They're apparently acknowledging that Microsoft Office is the _de facto_ standard, and aregoing to be continuing this product line more or less as a legacycommitment to their installed user base.Future upgrades are to be moreand more conversion happy, making sure that your Microsoft Office files canbe edited in Corel and then exported back to Microsoft without a hitch.

Some might see this as an unfortunate abdication, but I tend to view itas a smart choice in a changing situation. In the Windows market, theyclearly have been beaten by superior advertising and third-party interestin their Microsoft competitor. It is comparatively difficult, forinstance, to find many books to help you unlock the full potential ofQuattro. It is also hard to find many specialized spreadsheets forQuattro. This stands in stark contrast to the abundance of instructionalmaterials, plug-ins, and function-specific spreadsheets available forExcel.

Happily, this is not the case with Paradox, the includedrelational database, and Word Perfect. There are more than enoughinstructional materials around to help you become proficient in these partsof Office 2000.Both have many devoted followers, and you'll have noproblem quickly getting up to speed with the largely intuitive programs.

Out-of-the-box usability is thus a mixed bag. Some parts of thepackage are well documented, some are obscure, but still Corel has theadvantage of the superior product. They also have the advantage of havingmaneuvered themselves as the first Linux office software solution.Andit's guaranteed to work well in Linux because Corel have developed theirown Linux OS.

Plus, the Corel website is one of the best and mosthelpful places to be on the net.Try saying that about Microsoft'scumbersome, charge-you-around-every-corner site. When you buy a Corelproduct, you really do become a part of a family of other users who inhabitthe ultra-friendly, ultra-useful Corel.com. Beyond that, though, Corelitself puts tons of instructional materials on its website, so you'relikely to find the answers to your questions, if you're willing to do alittle digging. Some with slow web connections might find this arrangementunbearable, and will logically choose Microsoft simply because they canfind out how to use the software a little easier. This is an importantconsideration for some people, but I tend to look more for long termusability, rather than ease of initial use.

By choosing to stay in theWindows game byimproving their product's portability, and by moreaggressively marketing Word Perfect as _the_ Linux solution, Corel isplaying a smart waiting game.Since the upgrade version of this softwareis less than $200 the risk you might take by joining Corel is a negligibleone. It's affordable enough to be running alongside Microsoft Office, andit's hedging your bets on Linux' importance over the next decade. Themore you use it, though, the more likely you are to find that you keepopening up because you actually _want_ to, not because it's a goodinvestment.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best Office Suite out there!
I don't know why every one is buying Microsoft Office.People have told me that it's easier, but, respectively, I know that's not true!Microsoft says that WordPerfect is inferior because it isn't WYSIWYG, which they sayis because one "has to" use the code editing feature to makequality changes. That's a falicy, because the code editing feature isthere to make it so that you can more easily see where the codes start andend and then edit them so that less memory space is taken up with codes.Imade the same document in both suites and edited both the best I couldafter initially making it and the WordPerfect version not only lookedbetter, but was two to three times smaller in the memory it took up.Iknow that hard drive space is not much of an issue today, but I would thinkthat any conscientious business person would still find ways to save spaceand money and would certainly like to have better looking documents.Sowhy not give WordPerfect Suite 2000 a chance?Microsoft may have moreoptions but WordPerfect gives you more power to actually edit yourdocument. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Good Program, BAD INSTALLATION by flawed design.
~A) Software does not self-install -- no matter what you do(any kind of prayer beads don't even help!!!...I tried them all...)
~B) Customer service's automatic system gets back to you with info sooner than a warm body one does.
~C) I figured out the solution all by my lil ole self, and I am not even paid to do it!!!!!

___Listen, children, and you shall hear of
___yet another nightmare installing software...

Even my hubby who is technical support customer service guru, didn't get it figured out.But in defense of all those desktop jockeys -- they have so much information to remember that the basics are soon forgotten. ~~~So, here's a toast for all the softaware customer people in the trenches of day-to-day frustration, feeling unappreciated, and kicked like the dog. **Cheers!! [:]P ** "Thanks for all of the effort and attempts to help us non-technical users. And please try not to talk down to us so much and we will try to remember that you are only human as well."~~~

Simply put, use your computer to install it by -->

1.)Control Panel, select "Add/Remove Software" then,
2.)Select the "Add New Software", and finally
3.)The computer will do the rest and even come running back, wagging its tail, to that same installation screen to load all of the rest of the CDs for you too - what a dear thing it can be -- except when you are PULLING YOUR HAIR OUT over it!!!!

Happy software trails to all,
from The Lady Scorpio.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Training Opportunity!
My experience with "Professor Teaches.." was benefical and hassle-free.I was and am (I am still working my way through the tutorials) quite satisfied with the self-paced process of learning not only the basics of Microsoft Office components, but also aspects of their functioning I had little or no knowledge of.One CD is devoted to each component aspect of Microsoft Office. You can stop and start the session at will and when you begin agian you are at the point you just left off.

The information is presented in a straight fowrard, easy-to-comprehend manner. The interactive nature of this product allows the student to perform tasks associated with each topic.
I took the opportunity to take detailed notes as I went through each exercise, givng me a quick reference quick to use once I completed each lesson- so far I have completed the Microsoft Word and Outlook modules and am one-third of the way through the Excel module.

The only draw-back I experienced this product is that it worked best when installed as a program rather than used as a CD.

Also I think the edition I purchased had a lot of stuff I didn't really need like Office ME and 2000.Now I need to get the set with Frontpage and the other Web design programs.

Again, I found this product to be extremely satisfactory. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not User Friendly - Brain Dead Editor

I recently bought this product and found it to be very unfriendly. I was not able to properly save my completed resume. The editor was the most lame editor I have ever used and I have used a lot of different ones in 20 years in the computer biz. I did like the lists of different phrases and so-forth that you could choose from but that's about all I can say for it. The Microsoft Word template has it beat all to pieces for my money.
I guess you get what you pay for, and for me that was ten bucks.
- Paul B.

1-0 out of 5 stars How was a resume ever created with this!
Out of the box it looks impressive. The graphical front end when you first run it, gives you a sense of confidence that you are indeed working with the number one resume writing product in the world.I deligently set off through the seemingly easy-to-use screens putting in my information. The first signs of trouble were when I tried to go into the format changing screens. These were garbled, illegible and I could only close them in order to continue.Thinking I might have been doing something wrong, I pressed on with the task of keying in my resume details. When I got to the final congratulations screen and tried to preview the results of my labor, I found that it had all been in vain.Previewing my resume showed whole sentences cut off, parts of the screen jambled, sections missing, text uneditable in what are suppose to be editing screens and formating inconsistent. Basically, what would be printed out or converted to MS Word would be rendered useless as a resume. At this point, and after numerous attempts at reinstalling, applying patches and even upgrading, I find it difficult to believe that a coherent and useful resume has EVER been produced using this package. This leads me to conclude that it is nothing more than a hyped up piece of garbage - Kudus to the marketing team - the purchase of which constitutes an utter and complete waste of time and money.

2-0 out of 5 stars It could be 5 stars except...
I just spent 2 hours making my resume. I tried to transfer it into word because I have to email it along with another word fille to our HR department. Well, now it is a total mess.

This program is fine if you are going to print out resumes directly from the program. Horrible for emailing and HTML.

1-0 out of 5 stars At first glance, it's nice, butBEWARE of customer service
I bought this product for my husband after he was laid off from his job. I thought it was a good idea to update his
resume to something fresh and eyecatching.

The outside of the box boasted it's endorsements by several professional people and companies,as well as the fact that is the "#1 BEST SELLER". It also has the words on the box NEW VERSION 10 DELUXE, so this leads one to believe that it's the newest version available.

The examples are very professional looking. Included in the software is not only resume templates, but cover letter templates, virtual interview, salary finder, career finder, job finder and RESUME CASTER, which is supposed to send out your resume to virtually thousands of perspective employers via the world wide web... Upon the installation of the CD Rom, everything appeared to be going well. It's a very user friendly format, and I quickly was able to figure out just how to start the resume making process. Once finished, it will only print in the format you make, it will not transfer in same format for emailing or attaching to email. Had to start from scratch in MSWord. And WHAT on earth is DELUXE about this software? The frustration you get from using it???

I wanted to utilize RESUME CASTER...that's when I got a message that read, "UPGRADE STRONGLY RECOMMENDED". It would not allow me to do anything else with it. I emailed the company and the response I got 11 days later (which, upon emailing the company, the "canned" reply email said that someone would get back to me within 2 business days) stated that I had to send in for an upgrade which was free, however, I must send in a fee of $6.00 for shipping and handling.

I refuse to send in for an upgrade to a software program I just purchased 12 days ago, I find this unacceptable. Most reputable companies will let you download patches or upgrades to their software for free, but with this company, it's not an option.

I will use the resumemaker for making resumes and cover letters, then go to MSWORD to input them myself, because they do not transfer at all in the same format to word through the software. I will not get the "full use" of the resumecaster, and just spread the word to keep looking when anyone is looking for a good resume software. There are good ones out there made by reputable companies that will stand behind their work and their name to please the customer. This is not a company like that, they want to pretend they are "giving" the updates away, yet charge the customer $6.00 for shipping when they could easily get by with downloading upgrades for free when you have purchased their software.

4-0 out of 5 stars Really nice!
The program is really nice. It makes it pretty easy to put together a nice resume and do a web publications and searches. I like everything and I didn't give 5 stars just because I installed this program on one computer, it was crashing right when I was trying to save it. I installed it on to the other computer and ran into the same problem. It's hard to imagine having to bad computers so I do suspect this program has some technical problems. But if you don't foget clicking "Save" time to time, you should be ok. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Payroll update feature exploits users.
This review applies to both MYOB Plus 12 and to MYOB 2004

This brief review supplements my other review of MYOB Plus 12. While I like MYOB in general, it should be noted that MYOB doesn't allow editing of payroll tax tables. You must import the payroll tables from MYOB, under the guise that MYOB cares about your tax tables being correct and up-to-date.

So, for example, in Minnesota in 2002, the wage base for state unemployment insurance tax was $21,000. This means that all wages up to $21,000 were subject to state unemployment taxes. Anything above that amount wasn't taxed for SUI. In 2003, the wage base was changed to $22,000.

In MYOB Plus 12 there is one single tax table for Minnesota UI. There sits the number $21,000 in its own little box. That's the table. But, you can't highlight it and change it to $22,000. That's all the update would need to do. And, many business users would know how to change this value, because this information is easily found on the state's UI site.

So, not able to change the silly number by yourself, if you go to MYOB's website and look for update options, you'll learn that tax table updates aren't free. You need to purchase the support option. Further, there is a basic support option for $90. That basic support option doesn't include being able to update the payroll tables! You need to purchase "complete" support to be able to update the tax tables at a cost of $250 per year.

If MYOB only cared about accuracy of the tax tables, why wouldn't they allow the basic support users to download the tax tables? Better yet, make the payroll tax tables free.

Needing to pay for payroll updates (and at the "Complete support" level!!) really bugs me. For this payroll "feature," I'll give MYOB one star. I don't like having my pocket picked! If you use MYOB's payroll function, you can't edit or import your own tax tables. You can only use tables purchased from MYOB at a premium price.

So, as the other reviewer pointed out, you'll need to pay for support. Be sure to update your tax tables during your 30 day free support service. But, then don't be surprised when you find yourself trying to highlight and change one silly little number and realize it costs you $250 to change it!

4-0 out of 5 stars A ray of hope..... How to decide for yourself
I, like you, have been wading through the sea of worthless hyped information in search of a decent small business accounting package. I'm not an accountant, I am small business owner with a mission. When I asked my small biz friends what they were using the usual offer was to loan me a copy of their quickbooks cdrom. I declined each time while asking more probing questions. The #1 QB complaint was too many upsell ads followed by complaints about QB's cumbersome steps. All recommended at least 12 hours of self training before using QB. Three of five said they had quit using quickbooks pro. Two had outsourced accounting to a part time bookkeeper for about $1500 month. Over the years I worked in consulting. I was on the project team for installation and conversion of the worlds largest installation of Oracle Financials (at Zales Jeweler's). The moral learned was that consultants NEVER recommend something that cuts into future consulting revenue. So why do accountant's pitch QB??? Is it popularity, apathy or greed? Interesting that CNET reviews of QB don't display any score. CNET gives MYOB a 7.7 and SA is 7.0.So how could I possibly compare with that data? The answer is that it's not possible. While most people would give up and simply roll the dice on QB - My stubborn dedication drives me to seek a better answer.

Facts discovered so far:
1) ALL the old QB reviews are bad signs, Many of the old MYOB reviews were somewhat good with certain conditions.
2) MYOB offers a free flash tutorial & 30 day moneyback or you can take the trial download. http://www.myob.com
3) Small business owners are pioneers, control freeks, willing to give-up a steady paycheck to purse an uncertain path to their dreams. We take our chances and make our own money. I can't get ahead by just following the pack.
4) You will have to invest some effort to learn a new product. I planned on 12 hours over one weekend.
5) I need a good solid bookkeeping system. Advanced forcasting just does not apply in small business. We always want more and need to focus on better marketing & promotions. No accounting package would have forcasted my sales growth correctly. A good promotion can completely change your future. (You can really kick start sales with "Free Publicity" by my new friend Jeff Crilley (Fox News) and "Ultimate Marketing Plan" by Kennedy).
6) I will always have to pay for annual upgrades anyway.
7) You should expect tech support is usually a low paid warm body reading from the manual. Good training on my end is the better strategy for most issues. (search on myob training)

I downloaded the free trial from MYOB.com along with the tutorial. My control freek nature wants to make a program conform to me, but I have agreed to give it a chance using it as designed. Next week I will reload the system and begin using it for daily operations. So far it looks good for my service business...Try it yourself before cratering to QB. Your future may depend on it.

I wish you all the best in your endeavor,
David Cannon

3-0 out of 5 stars Quickbooks Converters be cognizant...
I ordered this product knowing that it had a freely available Quickbooks converter. The Quickbooks converter, while simple, did not do what I had hoped:

1) For any bank accounts, it carried over the balance accurately but it did not carry the register.
2) Transactions carry over as "historical transactions."You will not be able to see the specific details of these transactions (apart from the balance) in MYOB.
3) Along with that, if you run a statement on any preconversion purchases, all it will say is "Preconversion Sale" which is confusing to a customer who has no idea you "converted."I have not found a way to edit this.
4) It didn't pull my customer data well. The data is all there but it put the customer name in the address field as well as the name field so my invoices come out with the name twice and then the address.
5) Also know that you have to pick a conversion date and it must be the first of a month. It will not accept any transactions dated prior to that conversion date.

The software in and of itself is decent.I have some minor issues with the fact that I can't use my scrolling mouse and that the form customization interface doesn't have tool tips but otherwise the interface is not too difficult to navigate and I haven't come across any major problems that weren't directly related to the conversion.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not good for a beginner
Although it has many features useful for a small business, it is very difficult to work with. There is better accounting software, so please look around.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice Piece of Software
I've been pleasantly surprised by MYOB after being referred to it by a friend.I had never heard of it prior. It was simple set-up and it does everything I'd ever need (actually a lot more). ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

Let's see--a full-featured, interoperable, multiplatform office suitethat's light on your hard drive and drastically cheaper than thecompetition. Could it be true? Check out Sun StarOffice 5.2 Deluxe and find asleek alternative to Microsoft Office that's compatible with that suite's files, incorporates nearly all of the same tools and features, and runs on abreathtaking range of operating systems.

It might take a little noodling for Windows users to get the hang of theinterface, as it essentially takes over the desktop and changes a few thingsaround; after the learning period, though, you won't want to go back. Instead ofopening a new program for each type of file (text document, spreadsheet, database, image, appointment, Web page, etc.), simply tell StarOffice what youwant and each file opens in its own window, speeding up access considerably.OLE-style embedding is easy, and most of the look and feel will be comfortablefor Office users. Currently there's not much third-party support, and helpfunctions are ever present but inconsistent, so it's important to consider thecosts carefully before installing.

StarOffice is perfect for those switching to Linux or multiple operatingsystems, or any new user who needs an inexpensive office suite with plenty ofoptions. Current users of Microsoft Office might be better off sticking withUncle Bill--between learning new commands and the marginal differences betweenthe two, you might think inertia's not so bad after all. The programs includedwill definitely surpass your expectations if you consider price alone: thepresentation and drawing programs are simple and wonderful, the basic officefeatures of document and personal information management are intuitive, and thee-mail, news, and Web browsing are snappy. Integrated as they are with the wordprocessor, spreadsheet, and database functions, they all come together to form apowerful and inexpensive challenge to Microsoft Office. --Rob Lightner

Pros:

  • Inexpensive
  • Interoperable with Microsoft Office
  • Multiplatform--runs on Windows, Linux, OS/2, and more
Cons:
  • Little third-party support
  • Underdocumented

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome alternative to MS Office
Using the program is very simple, and all programs in Star Office can be saved in MS Office formats.A awesome alternative to MS Office.

5-0 out of 5 stars Far more than just an office suite.
StarOffice 5.2 has most all the office component capabilities one needs; spreadsheet, word processor, database, draw program, visual basic and macros, etc. However, with OpenOffice.org developer support, this core "office suite" is only a starting point for many possible applications. Applications interfaces such as "point of sale" or "scientific instrumentation" can be built on this office component core. StarOffice 5.2 is, in effect, a visual component library that works on many operating system and hardware platforms. This puts StarOffice in a class by itself.

1-0 out of 5 stars HELP!
I am not a dummy, but I think that I need StarOffice 5.2 for Dummies also.As one of the others has stated.I have had nothing but problems getting this thing installed and finally gave up!It is just a big mess! And now I cannot get it to completely uninstall and it is causing a lot of complications with my system?I cannot understand what is going on here.I have tried everything! It seems it isn't installed completely, so I can't actually use it, but I can't uninstall anything more than I already have and my systems still says it is there and it is reaking havoc on my system!I am glad to see that there a few other people out there that seems to be having the same problem that I have.I thought I was losing my mind for a while there.
ARGH!

3-0 out of 5 stars Star Office Comments
Basically an excellent program but with some irritating faults. The help menu is fragmented and unco-ordinated and it does have difficulty opening some MS documents. The biggest fault, I find, is that with labels it truncates the right hand row so that only half the labels are usable without a lot of adjusting. You can look in Page Preview for a label and all is correct but on printing all the right hand lettering is missing, also it sometimes insists on printing registration marks in the middle of the label, seemingly at random. Otherwise, excellent incorporation of spreadsheets into documents and very easy to use with excellent HTML editing. ... Read more
