Good but overpriced
This is the ususal reliable Laplink product, but expensive for what it is. The new version is faster than previous versions, so that is a plus. Downsides include not being able to use a standard USB cable or standard wireless networking. Otherwise, it works as advertized and the Amazon price is about the best.

Doesn't work well with XP
Used Laplink NT for years with good results but it did not perform with XP and new high resolution video, Ugraded to Gold Version 11.0. Was sorry. Don't think version 11.0 is XP ready. No matter how I configure ports or use manual setings this product will not work with my modern XP system and serial cable hook up. I get it going for about 10 megs of transfer and then it frezzes my computer.
Also LAPLINK 11.0 reports start up errors. I select the LAPLINK autocorrect routine and the routine reports errors corrected please restart computer. Same thing happens next time. Have email problem to LAPLINK for solutions ... no response. I'd look at some other product before I selected LAPLINK 11.0 for an XP system.

Laplink Gold 11.0 - compatible with Windows XP
Earlier versions of Laplink will not work with Windows XP.Laplink Gold 11.0 does, and works well.I primarily use it for backing up files between a laptop, home, and work computers, which only taps in to a few of this software's features.My comments focus on the file transfer capabilities.
Users familiar with previous versions will be able to immediately use Laplink 11.0 without re-educating themselves.The user interface is the same, as are most of the basic functions.There are also several means to link computers; a serial cable, a USB cable, the internet, or by modem.This gives the user substantial flexibility in dealing with their specific needs.I've done transfers by modem and serial cable; both operate smoothly.An advantage is that Laplink 11.0 works with previous most Windows versions since 3.1, so that the same software can be installed even if several computers you use have different operating systems.
I use a Hewlett-Packard 7965 at home and had problems opening a .com port.Telephone technical support is free (aside from the long distance call charges) for 30 days.Laplink support was able to diagnose improper settings of the .com ports in my HP computer, which resolved other problems I was having.For this, I award their technical support an A+.
If you need a specialty utility for file transfers and back-ups, Laplink Gold 11.0 continues to be a standard against which others are judged. ... Read more

OK product, but not through a firewall as advertised
I have used PCAnywhere for several years, but I now need a solution that would allow me to have remote access to computers that are behind routers and firewalls.So with this being a feature of the latest version of Laplink, I was sold.But of course, it is not as easy as they say.

The setup for a firewall connection is a bit complex, and not included with the manual.After testing many times and double checking the settings, I found that the only way it would work is to turn on port forwarding or virtual server on the router.I tried this with my SMC Barricade and Linksys Access Point, and it was the same for both.It seems that if the router requires Stateful Packets, the "trick" will not work.Too bad.They offer their internet web service called Laplink Everywhere for problematic firewall connections, for $9.95/mo or $89/yr.Didn't I already pay for the software?Also, you get one free tech support call, and then it also gets to be expensive.

Outside of the firewall connection issue, the product seems to work OK.I thought that the remote control speed was a bit slow on an internal LAN, but faster than I expected using dial-up.The usual features (file transfer, chats, etc.) also seem to be adequate.I do not use the sync feature, so I have no opinion on it.

How does it rate compared to PCAnywhere?I would say it is probably about the same, with it simply being a matter of preference.If you are satisfied with PCAnywhere, then Laplink will probably not be much of an improvement. ... Read more

Moving files and settings from one computer to another is what PCsync 3.0 is all about, and it's a terrific product in so many ways. It's incredibly feature packed--one could say the developers even threw in the kitchen "sync." Through its included LapLink serial cable, a parallel-to-parallel link cable, or a USB-to-USB link cable (otherwise known as a LAN), it lets you quickly and easily ensure that both PCs have the latest version of the files of your choice.

PCsync does its file update magic through an interface that makes Microsoft Briefcase look as primitive as an abacus. Once you've installed PCsync on a pair of computers, it's a simple matter to share them, connect them, and select files and folders that you wish to synchronize. PCsync will look at the file dates and ensure that each computer is updated with the latest version of the files you selected. If there are conflicts--files with the same name, for example--PCsync lets you know so you can decide whether to overwrite them. That way, files that you might need to revert to won't be accidentally deleted.

File synchronization is only one of PCsync's tricks. Another one--and possibly its coolest--is its PC migration assistant. Suppose you've purchased a brand-new PC, but you've been using your old PC for five years and it's overstuffed with files, applications, and settings that you really wish you could move to your new computer with ease. Works fine!
I use this product to synchronize files between my XP laptop and my windows 98 desktop over the house network. I have had no problems although it sometimes show conflicts where none seem to exist. Very helpful. A little difficult perhaps for those with less computer experience to use but otherwise great!

It doesn't even make a good doorstop!
I have worked with Laplink 95/3.1 and had a very good experience.So when upgrading my computer and operating program this was a natural to select for file transfer to the new computer.I spent many frustrating hours attempting to make it work.Requests to the on line help generated areference to an on line article that was of no help.I have given up.This software would not recognize a connection with the provided cable between a Windows 98 Pentium II to a XP Home EditionPentium IV.

Incompatible with XP and USB
Have spent many hours, unsuccessfully, trying to get this product to work on XP with LapLink's USB cable -- the only fast option, the other being a serial connection.Problems include getting scary blue-screen messages which bring down the whole operating system.LapLink was unable to help...Finally had to uninstall the whole thing and at least my PC has recovered.

didn't work
I spend several hours with tech support trying to connect a Win XP desktop to a Win 98 laptop and it never worked. I formerly used version 1.52 and it did work, but was squirrelly (and not compatible with XP). Obviously no progress was made with 3.0.

Plus, you can only access tech support via chat, so every time you reboot you lose them. Annoying.

Bottom line -- PCSync is at best way too complicated for a consumer product.

PCSync 3.0 Buyers Beware !!!
After several attempts (and nearly 6 hours) of trying to create a serial connection to enable file transfers from an old computer (operating under Windows 98) to a new computer (Windows XP), I gave up frustrated and angry that a company could bring out such a poor product.In addition, the online product support was useless and there were no contact number to contact the manufacturer.A process that I was hoping to take an hour, has taken 6 hours to date without resolution - I would suggest that you stay away from this product!!!! ... Won't install -- no support
It wouldn't install on my vanilla XP Pro system, there's absolutely no support on the Laplink site, and it trashed my Lotus Notes installation in the process.

It may install and work great for others, but for some reason it has been a complete waste of (too much) time for me!

product has been "twilighted"
This product is no longer listed on the manufacturer's web site.When I wrote customer service to inquire why, I was told the product was "twilighted" (which I take as a euphamism for "discontinued."

Works well with Lotus Notes (Intellisync does not)
After strugling with the Intellisync trial for about four weeks, I was happy to find this product.

PDAsync

1. Allows direct sync between the Palm Desktop and Lotus Notes (not supported in Intellisync).

2. Allows you to switch synchronization targets (does not work in Intellisync. Their tech support says you can't do that). For me this is a basic requirement.

3. Is half the price of Intellisync.

The interface is a litle puzzling at first. But after you "get it", the product is easy to use.

PDAsync is NOT PDAstink
...PDAsync is actually a pretty decent product. Although it won't transfer the notes field in ACT 2000 into a PocketPC..., it WILL permit you to map other customized fields.... ...

PDAsync is PDAstink
After my initial sync I could not get PDAsync to transfer additional info between my Jornada 568 and Act 2000. My attempts to retrieve usable info from Laplink's (PDAsync's parent company) so-called "knowledge base" and their tech support have, so-far, been futile.

For tech support, you are permitted one "free" telephone call, then you must pay a price... per incident/call (one call is approx. the cost of the entire program!). Don't try to e-mail them either. They won't accept e-mails without first filling out their form, complete with a serial number. Of course, they don't send out a serial number when you download the product directly from them ... even after purchasing it.

So far, not only has this product cost me money, but it has cost me lots of time. Trust me on this one, pay a few more bucks and get Intellisync or Companionlink.

There is a definite reason why both Laplink Inc. and PDAsync rhyme with "stink". They are both rotten. ... Read more
