I really like OmniForm 5.Actually I'm using version 5.1 and I'm very satisfied with it.

I was using another forms program I had purchased that was adequate but not nearly as good.After using FormTool I have a much greater appreciation of OmniForm.

ScanSoft has been on my list of not to buy software recentlybecause of some of the poor performance of some of their other programs, tech support is expensive from ScanSoft and none of their software that I have used have been easy to learn using the manuals or help files.In contrast OmniForm was well worth the money.

OmniForm 5 does a great job of either creating forms from scratch, scanning or converting from PDF.It's the only forms program I have tried so far that actually does a great job of importing a form from a PDF file.

Its has all the tools you need to create a form starting with a blank page.You can define any field with a variety of formats. Example you can create a date field with a specific format then no matter how the data is input the program will automatically reformat the data the way you specified.You can create just about any field simply by dragging a symbol from a menu onto the page. In the case of inserting a graphic you can choose to have the graphic saved with the form or not saving with the form itself to conserve file size. You can have the graphic resized by the program with little loss of quality.Features such as these might be available in other programs of this type but I found OmniForm to do the best job with creating a form field by field with the least effort.

Scanning in of a form is almost flawless.It even recognized fields on the paper form that were meant to be circled and created the field for them.Other programs I have used could not do this well if at all.The only adjustments I had to make on scanned forms were sometimes OmniForm recognized text as bold when it wasn't and occasionally it would change the font. For example it would change Arial to Times New Roman on some spots of the form. Strange quirk.

To get a form imported from a PDF file you have to open the PDF file and print to OmniForm.This is very accurate with little adjustment necessary after import. OmniForm really shines in this area.But I did notice if the form your importing from PDF has multiple pages OmniForm will give you an out of memory error when you try to save.To overcome this flaw you have to import one page at a time, creating a new page each time in OmniForm to make a multi page form from PDF. A little time consuming when you have a 9 page form.

It will create a self running .exe form you can e-mail and the person on the other end can fill out the form and send it back. This works even the other person does not have OmniForm on their machine.Because some people filter out .exe file attachments the program also creates a .html version of the form.This is a very handy feature.

The help file is not of much use. The paper manual is better but still lacking. If you have problems tech support from ScanSoft is expensive.But there is a user support forum you can get to through the support page on the ScanSoft web site. I have used the forum with great success.

Overall this program is a little difficult to use with some quirks and needed features like being able to import and save a multiple page form from PDF.But well worth the effort to use as it is the most accurate forms program I have used.

I do recommend this program.If the flaws I mentioned were corrected I would give this program 5 stars.

Given the established company (Scansoft) who makes it, and the fact that it's version 5.0, you'd think that this product must pretty much do everything to do with forms and repair the kitchen sink. Not so.

I'm a novice user to forms software and after only 2 days I have a list of "features wanted" that could not fit on this email.To cite a few; a very limited autofill and formatting features, very limited ability make buttons, macro scripts, and missing features such as a pop-up calendars and calculator, a workable preview mode, floating help boxes, etc.

Good points?Conversion from a MS Word form was flawless, and scanning a form was not half bad.It's easy to use (it'd better be because the documentation is almost useless), automatic generation of database but it has to be manually exported to DB programs.A 10,000 record limit to the number of records that can be stored per form is ridiculously low.You can create "e-mailable" forms to send to others to fill even if they don't have the software (but you are limited to 100 such forms unless you buy the premium edition).There is supposedly a way to post forms on the scansoft website but it hasn't yet worked for me.
Worse, Scansoft allows only ONE free techsupport event and then you have to pay for each event after.The so-called support forum has NO INPUT from Scansoft techs.All the better to force you to pay for tech support.

Unfortunately, if you need form software that is easy and somewhat mature there aren't alot of competing products out there.At several points I thought about the benefits of just staying with the MS Word form I originally created.

This is a great software product for small business owners. It has dozens of forms, sample letters, and worksheets to help with forming a business, hiring employees, borrowing and lending money, leasing space, etc. In addition to the forms, it includes the full text of five Nolo books: Legal Guide for Starting & Running a Small Business, Tax Savvy for Small Business, Everyday Employment Law, Marketing Without Advertising, and Leasing Space for Your Small Business. The books alone make this an amazing deal.

Given Nolo's reputation for plain English self-help materials, this is a must-have for any business owner's computer. The peace of mind in being able to look up basic legal, human resources, and tax questions has made this an excellent purchase for me.

I thought I'd better warn people before the fake glowing reviews come in.

This is not very useful software.Quicken seems to be on a robbing spree.I order a lot of items on Amazon(and wasted a lot of money) but have never written a review.This software is garbarge, a library or your Secretary of state website, or IRS website will have all these forms.The software gives you NO freedom whatsoever and are nearly unpresentable.They are just TOO generic.This software gave me an empty feeling of loss.I wrote this review so nobody else would waste their hard earned money.

I've had earlier versions of this product and eagerly await updated editions since they only get better.For those who have never used it, this is an indispensable tool to open a wide variety of files you may get through the Internet or shared in other ways for which you have no application on your computer.This includes the latest MS Word and Excel 2004 files as well as WordPerfect 12.

This highly clever and sophisticated program, which installs very quickly and easily, allows you to open most Windows files, pictures, and e-mail attachments you can't otherwise.It converts both Windows and Macintosh files and allows you to share reformatted files easily on disk or through the Internet.

With this program you can translate virtually any file you get, and also view files or pictures with applications you don't own.Further, you can create custom settings to automatically convert certain files.This feature I like since I can drag old databases I created in MS Works in the late 1980s onto a separate icon you can set up to automatically convert them to recent database programs.Slick!

For the few files you still cannot open, the program gives tips on opening them, though with past editions I would have liked more information offered here.So far, I'm not sure what to expect on this issue with Version 15.0 since everything I've tried to open has indeed opened fine!

One recent feature of MacLinkPlus allows you to carry documents on your iPod, such as directions and "to-do" lists.But not having an iPod, I can only guess is a good feature.

InfoPath is an awesome product that allows the creation of electronic forms quickly and easily.

When combined with InfoView from Unique World Software (www.uniqueworldsoftware.com) which converts InfoPath forms into ASP.NET forms then it forms a powerful solution to create web forms.

I would have to say this product is pretty amazing. However, to use it to it's full capability would require you to have a robust Active Directory, Windows 2003, Sharepoint Portal Server, Exchange 2003, SQL Server 2000 and a ton of trained end users.

The biggest downfall is that there is no viewer availiable so any forms that you create using Infopath will require the client PC to have a copy/liscensed version... You do the math. =) ... Read more

Having been a DBA and Crystal Reports developer for the past 3 years, I have to say that version 9 is a notable improvement over previous versions (we are using the Advanced Edition).Yes it's quirky and far from perfect - but as far as highly-programmable/distributable/printable reporting goes, it's practically the only game in town.

First of all, I like the new "command" object.You can use this to (among other things) actually write data back to the database (which is great for creating "tables of contents" and the like).I also like being able to create custom functions and store objects in a common repository.In addition, I've noticed that formatting tends to be much cleaner when exporting reports to pdf and other file formats.Also, the new compatibility with .NET will help us when we upgrade to that platform.

Another enhancement is greater ease when it comes to changing the datasource location.You can now set the datasource location on both the main report and the subreports from one window - instead of having to open each subreport, as was required on older versions.And the program seems to do a lot better at recognizing when an external app is dynamically setting the datasource location (just make sure the schemas of both datasources are exactly the same when doing this).

The Report Application Server (RAS) component (included with Advanced Edition) is a powerful tool for delivering reports on the web or across one's corporation, without having to pay extra.But be advised that you may need to do some extensive re-coding if you were previously using the RDC.Also, URL reporting is no longer supported - at least not with RAS.And if your corporation has a huge number of users, you might need to buy an additional processor license (which is by no means cheap).

Many of the same Crystal quirks remain: occasional locking up on huge queries or "verify database" operations; kludgey editing/formatting (for example, when you move multiple fields around, they don't retain their original spacing); frequent and cryptic error messages (although this is somewhat improved); hypersensitivity to any change in the underlying data source, resulting in a frequent need to perform a "verify database" (e.g., if a field's datatype on the server changes from a varchar(10) to a varchar(20), it will still truncate at 10 characters unless you do a "verify").But now it at least allows you to manually map a report field to a database column even if the datatypes don't match.

In short.....until someone else comes out with a fully-customizable, fully-programmable database reporting solution that prints/exports/distributes professional-looking reports over the Internet and integrates with Visual Studio and other development tools.......Crystal Reports is "it".

Crystal Reports is OK for serious professionals, but too complex for the average user.I won't go into all the basics, but if you need to read a customer review on Amazon to know if this software is for you, you should probably not be buying it.I have received reports made with Crystal, and they are often completely unusable because the person using the software did not know what they were doing.Ultimately, the report tools already included in most database and spreadsheet software is powerful enough. ...     I got this software a few years ago when I first started my home business. It has done everything I have ever asked it to do. Then one day it started to lock up my system so I called tech support for help. As it turns out I had an old version of the software and it was causing problems with service pack 2. The only solution was for me to upgrade to the new version. They gave me 50% off the new program!!!! Now I am back up and sending out invoices. THANKS INVOICES AND ESTIMATES!

    I bought this at OfficeMax because it was on clearance for $10. Now I realize why it was on clearance.

    The software is great in itself with all the features a small business would need without all the accounting features. I was looking for invoicing and customer records and the software had them both.

    However, the software has bugs that need to be sorted out. Sometimes, it would work but other times, the software would crash when I tried to create an invoice, and would open back up in Spanish or French version. Thus, it doesn't seem reliable to be able to make invoices at the convenience of the software.

    The software is great but the bugs are unacceptable.I was using Windows XP with and AMD Athlon XP computer.

    I actually bought this software before reading any reviews on it. I was shopping for Quick Books Pro, but was set aback by the price. When I saw Invoices & Estimates Pro it looked like a bargain. It does 80% of what Quick Books does, and it's 1/8th the price. Since all I need is the ability to store customer records and print invoices, it was perfect (although it does lots more than just that).

    When I got it home and looked up some reviews I was disappointed at what people were saying. I wondered if I should just return it. But it said on the box there was a 30 day money-back guarantee, so I figured I'd give it a chance....

    Turns out, it's great! I honestly don't know why the other reviewers have had difficulties with it. I'm running Win XP Pro and this software has never once failed or locked up my computer. I also find it more intuitive and easier to use than Quick Books.

    What I like about this as opposed to QB (which I've used in the past) is that it is much easier to customize the design and layout of your templates. My invoices are far nicer looking now than they ever were with QB. I can also print aging reports and graphs in seconds.

    Don't get me wrong, Quick Books is a great program and it does have many added features. But if all you need is basic invoicing, accounting, and reports, like me, and you'd rather spend $40 than $300, I would recommend Invoices & Estimates Pro.

    This program is a night mare. I think the software person that wrote this program thinks all people know what he knows. This is definately not for the average person or business person trying to set up a invoice program. It simply is not easy and simple like the box says.
    I have been at it for two days now and am going to have to hire a software engineer for big bucks to set it up or I may just TRY to return it.
    The box is very very deceiving, it is far from simple.

Word Menu 2.2 offers quickly accessible words, however the defintions are vague and indirect. Many words you would expect to find are missing, and frankly this is a program that would be most useful for people learning the english language,seeking to understand genres which certain words pertain to. It is my opinion that most english speakers already have a strong grasp on most of these words and subjects they entail; buying this for any trivial benefit of searching words by subjects, is foolhardy. It's not worth 30 dollars, I wish I would not have purchased it and do not reccomend it. If the price was 15 dollars or less, I would suggest "hey why not". $30 is an unreasonable price for this simplistic vocabulary lexicon and is more wisely spent on something else.

This is a very comprehensive resource of categorised words and their meanings, which is easily navigated and understood. Loaded onto a laptop, one has a lot of power easily to hand.

The Fractal Browser looks like a good idea and would be a visually attractive feature for school kids. But I would have been happy to ditch this feature in place of having a standard dictionary browsing option outside of the categorised options, and still retain links to the corresponding categories. Another aspect of the Fractal Browser is that the links are images with quite fine text. This doesn't respond to the browser `Text Size' selector in Explorer. So monitors set at higher resolutions than 800 x 600 will beproblematic for users with less than good eyesight. Users of IBM Thinkpads will not be able to get around this. This is also a problem with respect to the category tree.

(P.S. 22/09/2004:IBM Thinkpad users can get around this problem by right clicking on their desktop, and then left clicking on the Appearance tab, and selecting one of the Windows, Scheme options with larger GUI attributes. This however, may clash with other applications, which need a higher than 800x 600 resolution to allow the use of some of their property sheets/dialog boxes. Many recent applications are now optimised for 1024 x 768 and higher.)


A good product in principle and at a very reasonable price, but falls a little bit short in the overall design, with too much attention to the deluxe features, I think.

Searching for words is straightforward and the history feature is useful, but if you aren't sure of a word's spelling it can be tedious to find it, by trial and error, unless you know its category and go manually browsing for it. Google smarts would be useful here, and worth a few dollars more.
