4-0 out of 5 stars Server Basics 101
I just took on setting up my first small office network. We have four computers and a desktop that someone set up to run as a server. The 6 gig harddrive had long seen its time and needed to be replaced.I bought a Dell PowerEdge SC420, 4 Windows XP Professional upgrades (from Amazon at an amazing price and current rebate) and Windows Small Business Server 2003 (also at a great price).I've worked on PC's for years but never set up a office network with a server.I was very apprehensive and questioned my skill but this software honestly was ridiculously simple to install and deploy.

It guides you through the entire process step by step and I recommend it highly to anyone looking for their first server software.Of course it does have some very technical aspects that left me scratching my head but that's because I don't know what I'm doing.Setting up Sharepoint and Exchange will require some further reading on my part but shouldn't be that difficult to deploy.

I recommend this product very highly and didn't give it 5 stars because of my own inexperience and not being able to see what it can fully do.It also takes hours to install which is pretty typical for any Microsoft product.I did have the whole thing done in one Saturday though and it took about 8 hours altogether. ... A PC WORLD Best Buy! (April 2005) Spyware slows systems down, causes crashes and can even invade your privacy. To combat spyware, you need a powerful tool: CounterSpy. 5-0 out of 5 stars Leading The Way
Every now and then, a product comes on to the market which actually does just what you want it to do. I am hardly a system tech, but regularly clean my PC with various programs, and considered my system spyware free. That is until I read PC Advisor`s (UK) review of anti-spyware programs recently, and on their recommendation installed Sunbelt`s Counterspy. It was a breeze to install, and the fast scan showed 6 spyware progs installed. After I got up off the floor, Counterspy cleaned the drive and left me feeling more than a tad relieved.
Sure, nothings` 100% foolproof, but this is easy to use, gives auto updates, and gives minimal system lag, not to mention being cheaper than the competition. If you`re unsure, read the reviews!

5-0 out of 5 stars BEST ANTI-SPYWARE PROGRAM!
After reading the review of this product in PC WORLD just the other day, I went ahead and ordered the program. The review was right on, this program found 11 spyware files and one Trojan Horse file in my home computer. Interesting, because I run Ad-Aware and Spybot as my anti-spyware programs daily......and these two didn't find what Counterspy found! I'm sold. Though my other programs are "free", I gladly will spend the $19 bucks or so for this program for my other machines now. No, I don't work for the PC World folks; nor the Counterspy folks; nor Amazon or any computer outfit....Am retired, and have fun building computers for fun and family! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good product poor program version update system
I present this review in the form of an complaint email I sent to Lavasoft (one which I recived no response.)

"I've been with you for years but am now going to move to a competitor. The reason is your program update system--every time you create a new version the program, it stops working and I have to go to your web site. And the instructions are confusing and I can't find my registration info from a year ago and when I do it does not work. This has happend repeatedly. And so so 3-4 days ago I wrote to your tech support (a web system pain in itself) and no one got back to me.Well forget it, I've had enough. You should make your updates of the program automatic like the updates of the data, which work fine.I like your program and I hate your update and technical support service...a bitter sweet experence with you"

5-0 out of 5 stars Well worth the upgrade from the free version.
I first used the free version of Lavasoft's Ad-Aware SE, and found it did a great job finding and removing ad-ware and spy-ware.The trouble was, I would find new spy-ware following each visit to the web.

By purchasing the "Plus" version, you get an additional feature, "Ad-Watch".Ad-Watch runs in the background similarly to an antivirus program. It stops ad-ware and spy-ware before they have an opportunity to work.Without Ad-Watch, any spy-ware or ad-ware will be active until you run Ad-Aware to remove it.

I still run Ad-Aware on occasion, but by allowing Ad-Watch to run, I have yet to find any spy-ware that has installed itself.Ad-Watch busts it before it has an opportunity to install and run.I enthusiastically recommend this product.

1-0 out of 5 stars Stick with the older NAVs
Both my wife and I purchased this software near the end of 2004.At first, many of the "features" were just an annoyance, and I assumed that I would gain experience with them and move on.That never happened.
While online one day, Internet Security mysteriously disabled itself.I immediately got off the internet, but was unable to reactivate the program. After trying everything I could think of, including unistalling and reinstalling the program, I contacted Symantec. They advised, via email, me to do all the things I had already done (by the way, their online automated help is abysmal). This had the predicted result of not solving the problem.A clean boot and registry edit later, the program was still not functioning. At this time, my Outlook had ceased functioning until I removed the program, and several other programs on my machine returned errors stating that they had encountered problems and "needed to close".Prior to Internet Security crashing on me, I had never seen this error before.I found it distressing that the program designed to prevent any kind of Internet attack was also giving me this error.
I did some searching online and found a couple articles that said that Internet Security had been found to have a bug that allowed hackers to disable it over the web.Symantec assured me that this was not true.In the end, I completely removed the program and that solved most of my woes, however I am still recieving the same strange "this program has encountered a problem and needs to close" error with Adobe Distiller, and occasionally with other programs, however, only the Adobe Distiller seems to be completely fatally affected.
My wife has had problems with her Internet Security, and has also found that disabling it is the way to go.Fortunately, her's did not die completely as mine did.
Bottom line is, from my viewpoint, beware of this program.I never had any problems with earlier NAV versions, and I will be returning to them, although I was rather soured on Symantec as a whole for having produced such a faulty program.

2-0 out of 5 stars Effective, but VERY bulky
While it has a rather effective firewall, and comes with Norton Antivirus (which I'm actually rather fond of), the Security Suite has significantly slowed down my system. I'm currently using a Sony Vaio S-150 (which I bought at the end of this past August), and it takes about five minutes just to boot the system - in fact, I've taken to just hibernating, rather than shutting down completely.
The Antivirus is good, but "Internet Security" just isn't worth it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Voted With My Feet
After months of frustration with NIS 2004 and Symantec's pitiful tech. support, I finally threw in the towel. Went with PC-cillin Internet Security 2005 and am happy that I did so. The PC-cillin UI isn't as refined as NIS's but - you know! - the product works, the Anti-spam component integrates nicely with Outlook, and etc... No compatibility issues and my machine is running noticably quicker.

With any luck, I'll never have to be concerned with the quality of TrendMicro's tech. support. In any event, it couldn't possibly be worse than Symantec's. Here's Symantec's version of how to fix the Visual C++ Runtime Error for the AntiSpam plugin, so well documented in other customer reviews and on the Web:
1) Rename MSOUPLUG.DLL to MSOUPLUG.OLD. Trouble is, that's not a fix; it simply prevents the error message by disabling the very plug-in you were trying to fix.
2) Do a LiveUpdate for NIS 2005. Trouble is, I was running NIS 2004.
3) Remove and reinstall NIS 2004. A painful procedure that, in the end, doesn't work (and they know it).
4) Upgrade to NIS 2005. (Yeah! Right!)

Um... NIS 2004 a bad product. Very bad. Read the reviews here before you buy; we can't ALL be lying...

1-0 out of 5 stars Killed my Internet Access Speed
Loaded this suite on a newly built PC: AMD Athlon64 512Mb RAM, WinXP Home, running broadband cable - connection speeds were slower than my dialup while I had the program loaded.Uninstalled and PC ran like a champ... excepting the junk Symantec left on my PC... Couldn't fully uninstall since it had hooked nearly every program I had installed.Ended up having to reload Windows to get the machine to run without error and at optimum speed.

Would NOT recommend this program. It was a waste of my time and money.

1-0 out of 5 stars NIS 2004 - Total Garbage
Without repeating all the problems reported by other reviewers (I have experienced most of them and more) suffice it to say that amazon should take this off of their shelf and refuse to sell it. It is utter and complete garbage - I have never seen any software that behaves so poorly or is so poorly supported. Symantec / Norton should be ashamed of this product and should send a refund to all users of it. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Easily cripples network connections for novice users
I've done ISP tech support since 1998. Of all the firewalls I've seen the various versions of Norton Internet Security have caused more crippled connecitons than any other.

I get calls weekly where disabling or uninstalling Norton Internet Security resolves problems with connectivity. I'm not sure if it's the becausetheprogram is just poorly designed or it if it's just poor help and tutorial info with it.

But the end result is that this program has cost my employers huge resource drains in supporting Norton's customers, and cost my users countless hours of time wasted troubleshooting issues with thios software, and days of lost network access. I also know someone working an a major univeristy that found that this was a source of problems in how their pop-up stopper re-wrote HTML code in web pages it was filtering and caused applications they'd built to fail.

There are free firewalls you can download that are as effective and easier to use. This one can cause far more trouble than it's worth.

1-0 out of 5 stars Sadly -- lost integrity
I have been using Norton products only since about1986, but I'm ready to switch. All manner of problems with this program never seen in previous editions.Instructions and support seriously inadequate at all levels.
I have used this version on two machines -- spent days trying to clean a botched installation [I believe not by me, but the installation program] on one machine. Now a month-old installation an a new desktop is failing.Spent hours with "knowledge" base and incomprehensible advice. Then, for a $29.95 phone call, received numerous recorded "we are too busy to talk to you even if you pay us."Then, a rude and sarcastic rep, who dumped my into an uninstall routine that failed, disconnected my call, and refused to hear symptoms.

1-0 out of 5 stars What happened?!
I bought Norton Internet Security 2004 after I got a VIRUS that NAV7 corporate edition couldn't detect or remove.I thought upgrading the 4 year old program would help.Nope!Norton detects Trojan.Bookmarker.Gen but even in Dos mode is unable to fix it.It turns out that I got an advanced form of the Cool web search trojan/spyware.Well Norton seems to care less.I emailed them about the problem with no response after 2 months. They used to let you submit a new virus discovery but I couldn't find anything anywhere on their site about reporting new viruses.

What happened!?

I guess I could pay them by calling their highly over priced help line to tell them their program sucks but they already have too much of my money.

And what is it with these guys claiming that because it is spyware it is not a virus. If a program hides itself, alters files without permission, and otherwise takes control of your system without your permission, I'm sorry it's a virus. And the leading Anti-virus software should do their job to make their software do what it's supposed to do, eliminate uninvited software(period).Stop passing the responsibility to Spyware removers. It's a virus, plain and simple.

No, I didn't install any freeware, only MS, Adobe, Macromedia, Mozilla, and Norton software.Like someone else said, get McAfee Antivirus and Zone Alarm, not this piece of worthless junk.

Am I alone in this sentiment? (...)

1-0 out of 5 stars More trouble than it's worth
Based on my very postive experience with Norton Anti-Virus and Norton Personal Firewall, I didn't think twice about upgrading to Norton Internet Security Pro. I should have. It does not do properly what it is supposed to do, and it runs so many unneeded processes in the background that it may bog down your machine, depending on your specs. It's content blocking feature blocks the most absurdly innocuous webpages, graphics, etc.

On top of that, it is more often than not too unstable to be at all useful or satisfactory. The worst example of this I have found is that the NIS user/logon/password feature interferes with a similar built-in Windows feature. The average user doesn't need to password-protect access to their machine at all. In my own case I found that this element of NIS, which you are obliged to use, made it impossible to restart the computer; instead I had to do a complete shutdown (and far too often). As a consequence, the first thing I do when I start up is disable NIS altogether. If I uninstall it, I lose the anti-virus protection -- which *does* work.

I requested a refund and was sent a Letter of Destruction (LOD), which I duly signed and returned -- and never heard another thing from them. I never did get my money back.

Neither the average user who excersises common sense, nor the professional who is trained to detect threats needs NIS. You're much better off sticking to Norton Anti-Virus (or a competitor's equivalent) and running the Windows (XP) firewall if you feel you need one. Beyond that, it's just a matter of being smart enough not to walk down a dark alley with $20s hanging out of your pockets.

Lastly, if you are concerned about spyware, bots, tracking cookies, etc., checkout Lavasoft's free program called 'Ad-aware,' available from http://www.lavasoft.de/

1-0 out of 5 stars Not recommended due to poor customer/technical support
I have Norton Internet Security 2002. I have used NIS for a long time and I have, until a few months ago, recommended it for virus protection, anti-hacking security, ad blocking, and privacy protection.

A couple of months ago, a Live Update created an apparent problem with SYMPROXYSVC.EXE that made it very difficult to browse Web pages. Pages often downloaded as slowly as 100-200 bytes/second. (E-mail and FTP seemed unaffected by the problem.) Although Symantec was quite happy to take my money for a subscription update this March, it refused to provide E-mail technical support for the product because support for NIS 2002 had been discontinued. E-mails to customer support received nonresponsive replies (or no replies), and a customer support rep ignored my explicit requests to be put in contact with a supervisor. A fax to the attention of the customer support supervisor was ignored.

Although a subsequent Live Update fixed the underlying problem a while later, I would rate Symantec's customer and technical support as effectively nonexistent and I do take notice of the company's refusal to stand behind its product even though it took my money for an extension to my virus definition subscription. Accordingly, it is no longer possible for me to recommend anything that Symantec makes.

I forwarded a copy of the letter I faxed to the customer support department to Symantec's Investor Relations department because I think their corporate office reallly needs to know what is going on with their customer and technical support departments. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Installation nightmare
I installed NAS with windows XP and it would not work.
After several e-mails and phone calls to their support desk in India they had me delete all my Norton programs (pc anywhere and Norton Antivirus) and run some patches and delete files and delete items in regedit.
Now I get a 3 different errors when I start my computer, I can't do microsoft windows updates and Antivirus and antispam do not work. The support is very slow to respond and don't seem to know what they are doing.
I will probably have to reformat my machine and start again

1-0 out of 5 stars A waste of money, time and energy; crazy-making
Worked fine initially. Then it deteriorated. Took forever to enter a posting into Norton Antispam (to designate it as spam). Then inexplicably my e-mail on Outlook Express6 got very buggy. Finally, I started getting duplicates, triplicates and quadruplicates of the same spam with minor variations, endlessly; and Norton Antispam began precedingthe sender information in every incoming e-mail, including my professional listserv e-mails, with "[Norton Antispam]" (as shown here, in brackets). This resulted in my needing to delete the "[Norton Antispam"] when I replied to an e-mail posting. At one point I noticed that my listserv postings (professional group communications) hadvery sharply diminished in number. Ultimately, I found that Norton Antispam had-- apparently for my convenience-- segregated these into theNorton Antispam folder. There I found some 2,000 e-mails, all with "[Norton Antispam"] preceding the senders' addresses. Many of these were my professional listserv messages; others were the usual obnoxious scams and spams for which one purchasesantispam software; however, when I tried to click on the button that tells Norton Antispam that "this is spam," I found it to be greyed out, and NONE OF THE MESSAGES COULD NOWBE DESIGNATED AS SPAM, apparently because they now had been funneled to me THROUGH Norton Antispam, like a gift. (I was, however, given the option to click on the button to indicate that "this is NOT spam.")

The wrestling with bugs in my system went on for hours and days, beginning with my internet service provider, going to Microsoft (where, for a fee, they helped somewhat), and continuing with Norton. Norton's customer support was execrable. On the final day of my efforts to get help, at one point I was on the phone for more than an hour, on hold. Support staff seemed befuddled, clueless, and ready to repeat what another support person had done that was useless, despite my protests. I was prepared to pay the nearly $30 they asked for their "help," but balked when the last technician was ready to charge me an additional nearly $70 because, supposedly, a virus had gotten into my e-mail. I wasn't convinced; very recently Norton Antivirus had scanned my computer and found no viruses. I had to ask to speak to a supervisor because she refused to take "no" for an answer to this billing. Norton's other products have so far worked well for me, incidentally.

Finally, I disabled the Norton Antispam and deleted all messages with the "[Norton Antispam]" imprimatur. This has apparently solved problems for now, and I just "block sender" on the spam.

1-0 out of 5 stars Slow and Not Very Effective
It takes far too long for the program to block an email that you just received. It is not that accurate. I would not use it if if was free.

1-0 out of 5 stars Unbelievable That They Even Ship It
I can't even believe Symantec would ship this in the condition it is in. Further, if it is so important to them to have some kind of antispam software in their suite, I can't believe they haven't put lots of resources into fixing it via their live update feature.

Summary of the problems:
It doesn't work... It's not catching spam.

When you select a spam e-mail that it missed and tell it "this is spam" to train it, it is horribly slow... It just took an hour to process the 300 spams I received over the weekend.. This is on a 2.2 GHz machine, and task manager shows that CPU is the bottleneck... 100% CPU utilization for about an hour.

It is not correctly integrated with Outlook. Whenever it processes a message, it triggers Outlook to think it is a virus accessing your address list. The best you can do is to tell Outlook to let it have access for 10 minutes at a time. In other words, if you get more than about 30 spam messages, you actually have to wait around and do a three step process every 10 minutes to get it to keep processing!
NOTE: SpamBully and other products do not do this, so this is NOT an Outlook problem. It is a problem with the way that Norton Antispam talks to Outlook.

In short, a horribly flawed product that should not be shipping until these issues are fixed.

1-0 out of 5 stars DO NOT Buy This Crappy Software!!
There is a huge bug in this software and it will not work with Outlook. The Anti-Spam toolbar causes Outlook to shut down and an error message pops up.This happens every time you start Outlook for the first time of the day with a new user. The folks at Symantec have known about the bug for well over a year but refuse to fix it.They blame Outlook, but they are the ones who designed this software to (not) work with Outlook. This company obviously does not care about its customers and their problems.Next time I will buy McAfee or something and stay far away from this company. ... Amazon.com Product Description

Get the e-mail you want and nothing else. McAfee's SpamKiller quickly and easily helps you stop spam from polluting your inbox using advanced rule-based and list-based filtering. SpamKiller now works with MSN Hotmail.

SpamKiller blocks specific addresses of known spammers just as other programs do, but SpamKiller goes far beyond lists. Its comprehensive preset filters also watch for subject lines and text within messages. In fact, SpamKiller can filter based on the sender's address, subject line, body text, and message header, and can even block spam based on the message's country of origin. SpamKiller comes with thousands of filters already installed, and new filters are released regularly, based on careful analysis of McAfee.com's spam traps. SpamKiller checks McAfee.com servers once a day for new filters, so your protection is always up-to-date.

SpamKiller supports MSN Hotmail, POP3, and MAPI e-mail accounts. By directly supporting multiple client-based e-mail applications (Outlook Express, Eudora, Netscape, etc.) and Web-based e-mail clients (MSN Hotmail), SpamKiller enables you to benefit from its advanced filtering without forcing you to change how you access and read your e-mail. If you're new to fighting spam, you'll love SpamKiller's filter wizard, which lets you create new filters based on spam messages you've received. Simply choose the part of the message you want to filter on, and SpamKiller does the rest.

Spam e-mail is automatically placed into SpamKiller's Killed Mail folder so your inbox remains uncluttered and free of spam; it is held in quarantine and erased automatically after 30 days. If for some reason a legitimate e-mail is flagged as spam, you can easily recover in one quick step. To make things even easier, SpamKiller can automatically import legitimate contacts' e-mail addresses into its friends list, ensuring that their messages aren't mistaken for spam. You may also add new friends, newsletters, or complete domains to the friends list at any time.

SpamKiller does more than just eliminate spam. It's also an e-mail monitor that can check and filter e-mail from multiple e-mail accounts. Monitor and filter your home e-mail from work or your work e-mail from home. And SpamKiller can alert you when new e-mail has arrived.

If you want to fight back, SpamKiller makes it easy to send complaints. Send automatic or manual complaints, make your e-mail address look invalid to spammers, and much more. SpamKiller automatically finds and suggests the relevant e-mail addresses in both headers and text, so complaining to spammers, Web site hosts, ISPs, or anybody else just takes a few mouse clicks. The result: more spammers have their accounts cancelled. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Do NOT waste money on this program
I can't even begin to tell you how terrible this program is. For the past seven days since installing, it has trapped all of my important email (without warning, I might add) and left all the viagra, insurance and mortgage spam in my inbox.

After finding out that the program was trapping my email without telling me, in trying to disable it, I removed the email account from the program. NOT ONE SINGLE WARNING appeared that doing this would remove all rescued email!!

A week's worth of client email and information is not gone, thanks to a program that was supposed to help. How hard would it have been for the programmers to put a secondary warning in the 'delete account' dialog that warns you your blocked email will be deleted? I mean, wtf? It's buried deep down in a help file somewhere, but why would I go search that out if I didn't have this problem in the first place?

McAfee? Your programmers should be fired. This program is a colossal disaster.

1-0 out of 5 stars junk
firstly this product self installs mcafee security center, it will not install without it and cannot be removed and have spamkiller still function. there are hundreds of people on the mcaffee "support forum" (more on this below) asking hwo to get rid of security center. In a supreme irony Security center will generate popups all the time, meaning mcafee installs an unremovable program that spams you!

the support is just surreal. no mater what question you ask you by mail or "live chat" get a form reply that says, in short: "we didn't read your question, so here is an answer to something else, hopefully you will know better than to botherus next time" so people go to the support forums. here you never find a mcafee technition, but simply "forum administrators, who also never answer a question.

also the filters, very important for adapting to ever changing spamsubjects and methods, are rearely updated. I am still wating for keyword cialis which replaced viagra six monhths ago in spams!

this program will also not support filtering long messages. others here have mentioned it. since spammers are aware of this it can and is easily defeated on this front. there is an option to filter long messages but it doesn't work. moreover mcafee knows it doesnt. the one straight answer I got from mcafee was that long messaging filters didnt work with some providers. which? Comcast, verizon, earthlink and all the rest of the large providers...lol.

1-0 out of 5 stars PLACE YOUR VOTE - DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT
If I could this organization would get no star. Program worked fine for a while, then I was unable to retrieve messages. Mcafee offers online Tech Chat that has not worked for 2 weeks and my e-mail has gone unanswered for an equal amount of time but sales on-line chat works everytime, immediately and 24/7.With service like this vote your dollars somewhere else until their revenues and and stock price subsequently suffer. This organization apparently has yet to learn that business success is largely a function of customer satisfaction, not accomplished by consistently ignoring you. If you have a problem good luck the support can easily cost more than the software and the live tech chat or e-mail assistance is available not 24/7 but 0/7 (my experience). I finally decided I wasted enough time and effort have uninstalled and am currently researching other alternatives and an organization that is available in the event support is required.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your time with it!
First of all, it only blocked 60% of the junk emails. not a good batting average by any standards.

It's very hard to use. Takes forever to delete or block a message. Why? I'm using DSL, connection speed is pretty consistent. Tech support is no help what so ever.

For couple days I didn't have any message. at first I thought maybe it's the ISP. Then I remembered I can check my email online. Turn out Spam Killer is not working for some reason. Maybe too much junk mails. I cleaned up the mailbox and Spam killer worked again.

The last thing pushed me over the cliff is the program will delete everything in the accepted email folder when I simply asking it to delete or block one message. An error will come up and then everything is gone.

Deleted the thing from my computer, now everything is back to normal. I can live with the spam, can't stand this POS!

4-0 out of 5 stars Note: Spamkiller 4 & Spamkiller 5 are different
Spamkiller 4 works well.Spamkiller 5 is a TOTALLY DIFFERENT program and does not work well. Some reviews here are of Spamkiller 5. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Only catches half the spam
This software only catches half the spam I get. When it misses emails with text such as "Banned government CD" I have to wonder if they guys are updating their software at all.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best One Yet!
As a small business owner, my inbox used to receive a constent flow of Spam, that is until I installed "I HATE SPAM".
I have tried other products before, but this one is easy to use, and does actually work.

1-0 out of 5 stars I Despise I Hate Spam!
I bought and installed I Hate Spam on Outlook Express. In spite of careful setting of filters, it continues to place good mail in 'Deleted' and put garbage in my 'Inbox'.But, that is not the worst of it!!I have uninstalled it from my computer and it CONTINUES to interfere with my email and delete my good mail.I CAN'T GET RID OF IT!!

I Hate "I Hate Spam".

2-0 out of 5 stars Nice idea, but it doesn't work
I uninstalled this program because I ended up spending more time dealing with it than it took simply to delete spam messages every morning. It is not capable of detecting messages with forged headers and does not provide an option for automatically deleting messages from foreign countries, which constitute a tremendous amount of the spam I receive.

1-0 out of 5 stars I removed it after two weeks. It's totally ineffectual
For example, you are susposed to be able to block entire domains from sending you spam.I blocked @china.com repeatly with no obvious results. The software relies on ten year old technology and doesn't keep up with spamers.

Don't waste your money. ... Read more
