Expensive, but has several useful new features.
Excel 2002 has several enhancements over version 2000.

The autosum feature now also allows you to auto average, minimum, and maximum functions.

Another handy feature is you can now copy up to 24 different items to the clipboard. Unfortunatly Excel still doesn't allow you to add or delete row, columns, and cells without loosing the items on your clipboard. It would be useful to add or delete to make space to adjust the your clipboard materials. Lotus 123 has had this feature for years.

The smart tags are both a help and a pain. They are useful if you want to change your formatting. If you don't need them, however, they are like an ugly blot on your worksheet (They don't appear on the printed copy, only on your terminal).

The pivot table setup has a new and friendlier interface. The formula evaluation is tremendously improved. If you make an error in your formula, it is easier to trace it out.

Overall I think 2002 has more improvements than 2000 had over 97.

Excel does have competition: StarOffice, OpenOffice.org
No one's arguing about whether Excel is good. It's a fine product. But given the cost, just of an upgrade to keep in line with whatever new features were created to justify the upgrade revenue, it's a joke. Unless you're a turbo macro user, or if you truly love Excel so much you don't mind it being a money pit, just go use the Excel-compatible spreadsheet in StarOffice or OpenOffice.org. The first reviewer is wrong--Microsoft does have competition, and it's from low-priced and *free* products.

Not only a spreadsheet
Excel is certainly an excellent spreadsheet tool.However, it can also serve as an tool for text-only tasks.The ability to chart information, in text or numeric form, makes this a useful tool for presenting the written word as well.Although much of my work is in text, whever I need a table of pure text, I use Excel rather than a text-processing application.Excel-based spreadsheets, text tables, and charts can be used in presentations with impressive results.Excel is one reason why, in my opinion, Microsoft has no competition in this area. ... Lotus123 v5.0 -the finance office's best program
I have been using Lotus123 since the 1970's.I started with Apple's Visicalc, and then was introduced to Lotus' Symphony program.Wow!There was almost nothing that could not be done with this program - Spreadsheet, documents, charts, even database (which I never learned how to do well).But, like most good things, Symphony died a slow death as Lotus continued to improve their basic program - 123.

The biggest competition for Lotus turned out to be Microsoft's Excel.Excellent program that mirrors Lotus123 in many ways.I believe it's popularity came to being because it was sold as a package with Microsoft, not because it was superior to Lotus.

I found lotus to be fast.I still use a the back-slash key for many functions rather than using the mouse.Using it in combination with the mouse really makes my computer smoke.People who are only beginning to use Lotus find that I sometimes am not a good teacher because they watch the screen, and my hands move so fast they don't know what I did (they were waiting for the mouse pointer to show them).

I also find the printing aspects of Lotus to be far superior to Excel for ease in using.One window, and all your printing commands are there.Excel you have to use two or more windows many times to set up fixed rows and/or columns.

Well, I have rambled enough about how I feel about the greatest gift to finance since the red pencil - Lotus 123.If you have any doubts about this program, email me.Over 20 years of using it and I still consider myself a novice.An advanced novice, but none-the-less a novice.Thank you for letting me review Lotus, and I hope this will convince you that if you do anything related to finance, you can't do better than Lotus 123. ... Time, time, time
It's incompatible with my MacLinkPlus; everything must become Appleworks 5 before it can then be translated into AW6 and the same thing works in reverse. I can't cut & past text from my old fave WordPerfect for Mac. And it's the slowest somemabitch, at least in iMac X+, that I've ever had the impatience to work with. Spinning wheel: working, working, working, all right already: finish working! It's basically sound, but I can't call up the usually codes to see what is really going on, as I could with WordPerfect. Its translation to html is a nice attempt but full of hesitancies, mistranslations, & that goddamned eternal spinning wheel: processeing, processing. I really think I *could* like this word process if they fixed up the speed, efficiency, & translatability, & added the "seeing within" features I like. [I had hoped WordPerfect would make something for Mac X+, but they say no.]
