ViaVoice Personal Edition 9.0 is for beginners in speech recognition. Setup is quick and easy, and dictation accuracy has never been better. The more you use ViaVoice, the better the program will recognize your voice. And it comes with a noise-canceling headset microphone that plugs into the microphone jack on the sound card of your computer.

Begin by creating a Personal Voice Model so ViaVoice can learn how you pronounce the words you use. Fine-tune your voice model for improved dictation accuracy through the Recognition Wizard. By using the microphone headset and SpeakPad, the ViaVoice speech-enabled word processor, you can talk to your computer instead of typing. Or dictate, edit, and format text directly in Microsoft Word 97, 2000, and 2002.

ViaVoice Personal Edition 9.0 can recognize new words as you use them, and adds them to the 160,000-word vocabulary, improving dictation accuracy the more you use the program. With the Text to Speech feature, ViaVoice can read back your typed and dictated text, making editing your documents easier. An improved Analyze My Documents feature allows ViaVoice to recognize your writing style and the words you use frequently, leading to greater accuracy. Also, use basic voice commands to access the Web and its contents in Internet Explorer using ViaVoice. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars IBM ViaVoice for Windows-Release 9
This comes with a noise-canceling headset that includes a microphone. It is not by IBM.It works with Microsoft Word 2002 the best, but will also allow dictation to other software. Your words can be read back to you by an agent which is actually a robot that appears when you summon it. It can also read back aloud words that you didn't type; in other words, any text it "sees" which is rather ingenius. It will make corrections if you speak over it when you see an error. You can also teach ViaVoice new words after it has learned to recognize your voice and inflections in your speech by creating your voice model. IBM gives you a 95-page User's Guide with black and white pictures to illustrate procedures.

3-0 out of 5 stars Free -Shipping, Fun for the Price, Not really worth anything
I got this product free with a coupon on the site.Aside from shipping which was almost nothing, now I have something cool to show my friends. After all it was free.It comes with a headset microphone which is alright but too short and uncomfortable. The software is ok but still having trouble making out simple things. Not to mention, if you want to dictate places, names, etc FORGET IT.I typed a paper about 4x faster than I can use this to write it.Kind of fun how wrong it is.Don't spend you money, but if it's still free you can order it for a kick.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very promising piece of software.
I got ViaVoice...I have to say that it is very fun to use. And with every word it seems that it gets more precise. I still have to finish the voice analyzations, but even so the software is getting very good at understanding what I'm saying. I even tried to trick it a few times with some nonsense words that I use to "talk" to my cats. I even taught it to understand some bad words. LOL If you know what I mean. Voice recognition software isn't at the level of StarTrek yet, but it's getting there. There is one problem I have though. At startup it prevents either MSN Messenger or MSNBC News Alert from starting up. And sometimes prevent's Norton AntiVirus Auto Protect from starting up. You can fix this by just starting the features mentioned manually, but it can be a pain in the butt. Though, it's nothing to uninstall ViaVoice over. Not a bad package...

5-0 out of 5 stars ViaVoice is a great product which is very useful.
I am very pleased with the performance of IBM ViaVoice. The technology upon which this package is based is obviously very sophisticated and powerful.I have been using ViaVoice for just over a month and the recognition rate is very high.Since the software provides for correction of any recognition errors, ViaVoice progressively refines my speech profile, resulting in a higher accuracy rate. Thus the accuracy is now significantly better than when I first started using the package. The vocabulary is amazingly big, including most proper names.Correction of any errors is quick and easy.

I can dictate to Speak Pad (which is the ViaVoice document processing program), or I can dictate directly into Word 2000.It is both easier and faster to use ViaVoice rather than having to key-enter text.I do have to copy and paste text in order to send out an e-mail or post a message on an Internet bulletin board. But that is simple and it certainly beats having to key-enter my message.I definitely believe that voice recognition has come of age and is an excellent application for anyone who composes messages frequently.Considering the very reasonable price of the Personal Edition of ViaVoice, I believe it is an excellent buy.

1-0 out of 5 stars Installation Problems
This software looks great on paper and I've read plenty of positive reviews, but I'm having major installation problems that IBM's technical support team seems incapable is solving. Halfway through the voice analyzation procedure, the software simply stops recording, thus rendering itself useless. I'm very disappointed with ViaVoice and will return it for a refund. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
I am very impressed with this software. It is quite accurate and corrections are made quickly. I will tell you that it does take a few weeks to not only train the software but also to learn the commands; but once that is done, the program is EXCELLENT.

One other thing is that is says the required memory is 64MG RAM. Originally that was what we had and our machine would grind trying to run the program. We went out and purchased more memory and the program runs swiftly. No grinding. Smooth.

Absolutely great product for those with nerve damage in their back, carpal tunnel, or any other medical issues that might effect the use of your arms. The program is also great for those who may not type fast. It types as fast as you speak!

4-0 out of 5 stars Fun And Useful But Not Perfect
I found this product easy to install and easy to get up and running after it walked me through a 5-minute reading process so that it could "learn" my voice. It even came with a microphonefor my computer. While I'm a fairly proficient typist, I still enjoyed watching the computer do all the work for me (like any good computer program should do).

I did note that the program missed one or two words in most sentences.I will have to play with it longer to see if "training" it will actually improve the accuracy. While these words can be easily corrected in the pop-up box that you can verbally call up, it tends to slow down the process, making this product of questionable value for good typists. While I probably make more typing mistakes, they are more quickly corrected during manual typing than with the use of this program. Those who "hunt and peck" however will very likely find this program worthwhile. So far I have found that it tends to be more accurate if I give it short sentences, or ifI feed it about five or six words at a time.I try to give it enough information in each sentence segment so that it can change words based on the context of the sentence. Also by giving it smaller segments I noted that they are easier to correct in the pop-up box.

For the price - this program is worth the money. It's fun to use even if slower than if I had typed the document myself. My final verdict on its usefulness for proficient typists is not in yet, as I need to give it a better workout and see if it "learns" to be more accurate. In the mean time I'm ready to sit back and have some fun watching it do most of the work for me.

1-0 out of 5 stars Buyers Be Ware...
I had bought this software for two reasons. 1.I'm a bad typist and thought that by using this software, I would have to not have to use the keyboard as much and 2. Because someone had left a good review about this software!

Now for the bad news, I tried to install the software and it was deffective! I tried calling the tech. support help line, which is not a toll free 800 number. They were unable to help me.They told me that they would send an email to a higher up tech support member about my problem and get back to me the next day! Guess what I never heard from them again, the following week I called the same toll number! I asked the operator to connect me with a person in charge over technical support, I of course received a recording and left my telephone number. I still have not heard from this person either! So buyers please be ware! I am greatly displeased with there service and I would not recommend them to anyone even my worst enemy!!! I will never buy anything fromthis company again!!!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars A little frustrating at first but great overall
When I got the program all I did was install it, read it a few paragraphs so that it could recognize my pronunciation and I was ready to go. At first it would type very little of what I said but after about a half an hour or so it was writing nearly everything correctly. It was about 99% accurate and I think with a little more getting used to I will be able to type anything much faster than before. You can control nearly every program on your desktop and even the internet (although the internet is a little difficult to master on the first day). I would definitely recommend this product to anyone on a tight budget but if you can, get one of the more expensive versions because more is included. But I am very happy with my product and will continue to use it and train it for many years to come. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Works Surprisingly Well
When I decided to try a voice recognition program, I first bought IBM ViaVoice 10. It would not launch on my PC - turns out that if you have any sort of firewall (or related utility) installed on your computer, it will interfere with ViaVoice 10, which uses the TCP/IP protocol. (Earlier versions of ViaVoice apparently don't have this problem.) After returning ViaVoice, I tried Dragon NaturallySpeaking v. 6 (Essentials), which I'd heard was actually superior to version 7. My expectations were low, but I was pleasantly surprised. After five minutes of training, I achieved reasonably good results. After an hour of training, results were excellent - especially when the program was used in conjunction with MS Word 2002, as opposed to DragonPad. Does Dragon make mistakes? Sure. But they are easily corrected, and in most cases not much worse than the typos you might make if you're a poor typist (like me). Besides, dictating to your PC is fun - and a welcome change from typing. The program also comes with a full-featured, printed instruction manual written in plain English by somebody with a sense of humor! This is a real rarity in these days of "online help" documents apparently translated from Japanese. I recommend this program to anyone who has the patience to train it, and a willingness to put up with some errors.

2-0 out of 5 stars Promise Not Yet Fulfilled
I purchased this product for my 9-year-old daughter to make it easier for her to get started on her creative writing. She went through the required voice recognition training program.Once she began to dictate, the computer wrote gibberish.I had her train the program some more; it still wrote gibberish. In case the problem was her child's voice or problems with her reading skills during the training process, I signed on as a new reader and tried to train the program to recognize my voice. It did better than it did with my daughter, but it still made a lot of errors.I suppose this product might work if you're willing to invest a significant amount of time on voice recognition training, but it requires more than we have the time and patience for. This is NOT an "open the box and get started right away" type of product.

By the way, it's advertised as being compatible with Windows ME, but it didn't work on my daughter's computer (even though it had the minimum system requirements).I had to load it onto my newer Windows XP machine.

Perhaps this program works for those who are willing to put in the time it takes to develop accuracy in voice recognition, but for now I consider the technology to be a promise that has yet to be fulfilled.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dragon NaturallySpeaking Preferred 6 is better than 7!
I was a satisfied user of version 6 (preferred) and thought I would be even happier with version 7.Bix mistake! As far as I am concerned, version 6 (preferred) is excellent.

I made the mistake of assuming the version 7 would upgrade the existing version 6 on my computer. It didn't.It installed version 7 in a different directory.Worse yet, error messages appeared.Reinstalling the program did not help.Uninstalling version 6 was no longer possible after version 7 was installed. Manually removing version 6 did not help.Fortunately I had a backup of my harddrive.I was able to return to the way things were before.I then uninstalled version 6 and it did a clean install a version 7.That solved the error messages. However, other problems with the new software remain.

I would have thought that some attention would be paid to grammatical structure when it would automatically insert a period or a comma. It does not insert comma's or periods in a very consistent way. This makes this new feature essentially useless.

Aside from this, unlike version 6, version 7 has caused some instability in my XP home edition system, leading to repeated crashes while executing "select that" and "correct that" commands.Fortunately, with Windows XP, the computer reboots after a crash. But you lose information in the process. My computer crashed three times while trying to write this section with Dragon version 7. I am now typing instead of dictating.

When doing a "correct that" command, new bugs became evident. It sometimes inserts the correction for the highlighted phrase into the middle of a previous word in a sentence. When I paused, it sometimes did not leave a space between the previous word and the next phrase. So some words remained connected likethis.Very irritating!

It would have been nice if there had been clear directions how to transfer custom words from the dictionary of version 6 to version 7.Now I have lost all the work I put into version 6.I subsequently put in hours of work inserting special terms into version 7's dictionary. However, with all the new problems associated with version 7, unless I find a solution I think I will go back to version 6, necessitating new work again.

Moral of the story as far as I am concerned: stay with version 6 (which worked fine for me) unless you are capable of dealing with a lot of frustration and able to resolve quirky issues like the ones I have run into.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing and easy = Amazinglyeasy!:-)
5 days ago I opened the package at 5:00 p.m. By 6:00 p.m. the program & mike/headphone had been installed, I had begun to train the computer by reading several short paragraphs and, hands-free, I created a document in WordPerfect. This was before I opened the manual. Since then, using the program, I have opened and closed programs, saved files, chatted on Yahoo, read and sent email, surfed the net, modified web pages and created handouts.

Initially it takes time - since it is best to correct as you go - but the more I use it, fewer corrections need to be made.
Every time that I use the program it gets smarter about how I speak. The Quick Reference card is clear, fairly comprehensive and easy to understand.

I was recently diagnosed with carpal tunnel syndrome and was told that my use of the computer would have to be extremely limited for some time to come. After researching the various voice-recognitions programs available I chose this one because it appeared to be no-frill and was reasonably priced.I figured that it would be a good place to start and that I could upgrade or go to another program if this did not work out for me. I am looking no further. Though I haven't finished the manual yet, using the computer is almost completely hands-free. Now I can use the computer more than I did before! What more could a gal ask? Next week I am thinking of asking it if it can do my windows.

I highly recommend this program. ... Read more

Say goodbye to carpal tunnel syndrome and hello to L&H Voice ExpressProfessional 5.0. This newly upgraded speech recognition software lets youdictate e-mail, create reports, and even surf the Web just by the sound of yourvoice.

Initially, the installation for Voice Express Professional 5.0 seemed abit daunting--the package comes complete with a "read me first" pamphlet, headphones, and a detailed user's guide. However, it seems that an easierstart-up process was on the developers' minds when they upgraded this product, so theinstallation itself was not so scary. After setting up our mike and creating ourspeaker profile, we were able to start dictating. Voice Express does offer theL&H Voice Express Café, an interactive learning center for new users.Take note, however, that you must have Shockwave installed on your computer touse this feature (the application will prompt you to install it if you haven'talready).

It is important to keep in mind that Voice Express only works with Windows-based applications. Still, if you are a fan of Word, Excel, and the restof the gang, you will be pleased to know that Voice Express is now fullyintegrated with Office 2000. The application even lets you send instantmessages, all without typing a word.

Because the software is trained torecognize your voice, you have to pay special attention to the positioning ofthe mike, which may take some time for new users to feel comfortable with. Itdid get a little frustrating having to adjust the mike whenever our heads movedor we took the headset off. However, although it may take some adjustment time, this application is fairly straightforward and quite useful for busyprofessionals. --Gisele Toueg ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars I love it!
I upgraded from the advanced to the professional edition because I wanted to use the voice recorded macros.I use it on both my home computer and my notebook. The supplied microphone (not USB)worked great with my Gateway Solo laptop.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not For Laptops
I wish I could say that I was not typing this review, but rather dictating it.I have no clue how this product really performs, because I just found out from L&H technical support that the mic they provide does not work with laptops PC's. I am told that I need to purchase a USB mic that will cost an other $50.00, which they do not mention in their documentation.I am sure that this will hold true on all Voice Recognition products and not just L&H, but they should have been upfront with as customers. So, If you are thinking of purchasing this product make sure you purchase a USB mic that will not get interference from you laptop.I will write a follow up if I decide to get the other mic. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Concept, just a bit confusing to learn...
I purchased the Dragon NaturallyMobile system for dictating away from my office, and it has fulfilled all of my expectations. The unit is ergonomic, useful, compact, and fully capable. Further, with additional memory cards, its storage capacity is virtually unlimited. The only downside, in my opinion, is the intuitiveness of the download feature. Upon returning to the office, a one button download feature would be helpful. However, all things considered, this is an excellent product worthy of investigation by those professional who live and die by the dictaphone. ... Read more
