5-0 out of 5 stars Follow these tips and it'll work great!
I just bought Dragon NaturallySpeaking about two weeks ago and I've already had a lot of success with it. If you're considering this product, I'd highly recommend it. Initially, I bought it because I'm a lawyer and do a lot of dictating anyway. But I also like to see the words on the screen, which is why I sometimes prefer to type things myself. I figured that Dragon NaturallySpeaking would be the best of both worlds. So far, it's worked pretty well for me. But keep in mind that the software doesn't work perfectly right out of the box. Based on my brief experience with the product, there are several keys to success.

The first is to put in the time doing the voice-recognition training. Unless you teach the software to recognize your voice, it just won't work correctly. There's simply no getting around this. Although it may seem tedious at first, the training will pay off. (Besides, some of the training exercises on the software are very entertaining. For example, you can read President Kennedy's inspiring inaugural address or an excerpt from Dogbert's hilarious book on how to improve your management skills.) I spent at least an hour or two training the software when it first arrived and, believe me, it was time well spent. After the initial training period, the more you use it the better it gets because it is constantly "learning" from its mistakes. As another reviewer has suggested, it probably takes about two months before you'll be really impressed with the product's potential. (I'm pretty impressed after only two weeks!)

The second is to buy a decent microphone. A lot of reviewers recommend a USB microphone, but an expensive USB model probably isn't necessary. I have an analog microphone (a Plantronics .Audio 90) and it works just fine. This particular model was far less expensive than most USB microphones that I've seen. The key is to find one that will allow you to position the microphone correctly in relation to your mouth. As the instructions tell you, the positioning of the microphone is essential. Frankly, the one that was included with the software just wasn't up to the task. It always seemed to be too close to my mouth and I was getting very poor results. But as soon as I started using the Plantronics, the accuracy of the software improved dramatically. Trust me, you'll be a a lot happier with the software if you spend a few extra bucks on a good microphone.

Third, although it may seem counterintuitive, you should always speak quickly and naturally when dictating, rather than one word at a time. For some reason, the software is far more accurate when you do. Of course, this is a two-edged sword. If you're really "on a roll," and speaking quickly, the software is very accurate. On the other hand, when you just want to insert a word here or there, it isn't always as accurate as it could be. Consequently, I find that you still have to do some mouse movements when editing your documents. So, although Dragon NaturallySpeaking promises virtually hands-free operation of your computer, don't expect miracles, at least not at first.

Finally, until you really start to master the product, you should probably use the text editor that's included with the software. It's called "DragonPad," and I've found that the voice recognition is somewhat more accurate when used with this program than it is with, say, Word or Outlook. Don't ask me why. Besides, it's really not that much of a bother. You can simply cut and paste from DragonPad into whatever application you may be using. When you first start using Dragon NaturallySpeaking, the increased accuracy is worth the extra step. You tend to get less frustrated when it's working the way it's supposed to. Shortly, however, I plan to "wean" myself off of DragonPad and start using Word and Outlook more frequently.

I hope that these tips help. Have fun, and remember that practice makes perfect. (Yes, this review was dictated using Dragon NaturallySpeaking.)

5-0 out of 5 stars As accurate as my typing
I type fast but not very accurate. Also, my hands get tired quickly. This software is the answer. After training, it recognizes my voice at about the same accuracy of my typing. I have to go back and make corrections, but I have to do that wiht my typing also.Plus, the correction process lets me proof my document to make sure I am happy with it. Now if you are a professional secretary, your typing accuracy and endurance would be better than the speech recognition in this program. But if you aren't, it's a time saver.

The only knock I have against it is that it doesn't work in Outlook Express.I just got a flier for version 7, and it is supposed to work with outlook express, so I'll purchase it for that purpose.

1-0 out of 5 stars Still not there
Voice recognition is a promise, not a reality and 6.0 demonstrates this fact.It will decades before one can truely dictate to a computer.Pass this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Program - With Caution
Admittedly, I only use the program to input voice into Word. I am an author, so I have to enter a great deal of text in a short period of time. Forget about cheap mikes. They simply don't work. You need to purchase a USB headset, mine is from Plantronics... So if you're going to input a LOT of text, and have the money and high end equipment needed to use the product efficiently, this is an incredible buy. Training, once I got a good mike, took less than an hour. I can see why users who do not use the product regularly might think it is a bad buy (and it probably is!). But if you believe there is a right tool for the right job, this is it.

1-0 out of 5 stars False advertizing?
The claim that this product will read email has proven false in my experience. There is no way to read outlook express or outlook. The text to speech feature will not work with anything but word ( You can forget about chat programs too ). I spent hours in thier knowlege base and found nothing useful. I suppose I could call them for a $20.00 dollar fee, but that stinks of extortion and I will not pay another penny to use a product that does not meet the claims of the author right out of the box. I will send it back and find a better way to spend $180.00. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Voice Pilot 3.0 from Tech Depot.
I purchased Voice Pilot 3.0 here on Amazon.com, who sent the order to a company called Tech Depot, a division of Office Depot. When my order arrived, I opened the box to find a card game called "Colin's Classic Cards." A fine program I'm sure, but hardly what I ordered. I called their customer service line, and I was told that it was a "pick error." They issued an RMA for the return and said they would overnight me the correct software, which they did. But, it turned out to be another copy of "Colin's Classic Cards." So, again I called customer service, and again I was told that it was a "pick error." They issued an RMA for the second return and again said they would overnight me the correct software, which they did. But, it turned out to be another copy of "Colin's Classic Cards." Are you starting to see a pattern here? So this time, when I called customer service, I just asked for a refund, you know, three strikes and all. I wish I could have given a better review of Voice Pilot 3.0 but I've yet to see it. Hope this helps.

Amazon.com Review

Voice recognition software often conjures up images of StarTrek or 2001: A Space Odyssey, in which characters holdin-depth conversations and accomplish great tasks with their computers. DragonNaturallySpeaking 5.0 Preferred Edition takes talking to your computer out ofthose science fiction movies and into the world of everyday use. While recentversions of speech-to-text software have resulted in mistake-ridden documentsand overpriced products, NaturallySpeaking 5.0 offers the ability to createwell-written and edited documents, send e-mail, and surf the Web.

In addition to better accuracy, other improvements include the "training period"and vocabularies for teen, adult, and advanced users. After you have chosen theapplicable vocabulary, this training period gives the computer time to get toknow your voice patterns. Instead of a 45-minute training session (as in the 4.0version of this product), NaturallySpeaking 5.0 thankfully only requires up to10 minutes of preparation. The program even offers dictation pointers for thoseof us who enunciate poorly.

One obvious advantage to voice recognition technology is that your hands arefree to hold the telephone or twirl your hair while you dictate. For example, this review actually was written with the program and not with the keyboard--afeat that previously was impossible. The only problem was found when loud noisesoccurred during use (make sure to keep your kids or noisy officemates out of theroom).

While NaturallySpeaking 5.0 is not perfect, it is a vast improvement overearlier versions, as well as its competitors. So, while you can't tell yourcomputer to take out the trash, you can have it write your documents hands-free.Now, if only they would invent the transporter. --Madeleine J. Miller ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Typing is faster
It does a fair job of recognizing simple text, but dictating an article out of, for example, the New York Times, stumps the program. Typing it, unfortunately, is much faster.

2-0 out of 5 stars Very buggy; works once you get it going.
I was very disappointed with the software product.Although the speech recognition capability was excellent, the program is wrought with bugs and is difficult to get started. In less you are using this application to work with Microsoft Word, you may have a difficult time.

I was especially disappointed to find out how long it takes to get started once you actually start to software. For example, when you click the mike on, sometimes it would be almost a full minute before the program would start to understand your speech.Sometimes I had to turn the microphone off and on a couple of times.

The software fascinates me and does impress me to a certain degree. It is truly amazing technology. However, there is much to be desired in terms of usability.I paid a lot of money for this software, and I expect it to conform to a certain standard.

I am going to try IBM ViaVoice.

3-0 out of 5 stars Very Good but the new version 7.0 is much better
The Dragon 5.0 is good but the new 7.0 version is EXCELLENT and is the way to go if you want to optimize your money.Dragon 7.0 is very accurate and has more speech capabilites.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Product
I was extemely pleased with this product.I bought it used off of Amazon.com.I loaded it on my desktop and I was writing a research paper for law school from note cards within an hour.I was extremely pleased with the accuracy of recognition. It was well worth the cost.

1-0 out of 5 stars Caution
I have attempted to use this product on machines running Windows 98 SE, Windows Millenium, and Windows XP.I have found that in each of these operating systems, this product continually generates system errors (approximately every 5-20 minutes) and each error generally requires reboot.Although the speech recognition seems to be reasonably good (when it works), this is an extremely unstable product.I would not recommend this product at all.(Wait lines for customer support calls are also very very long.)

4-0 out of 5 stars Dragon USB Very Accurate
I am a trial attorney who has been using Dragon Naturally Speaking Preferred USB 5.0 for about 8 months on a lap top computer. The system is very accurate and useful.I use it to dictate correspondence, deposition summaries and pleadings. The system is over 95% accurate at 150 words per minute. I am concerned about the bankruptcy of L & H since the product is the best voice activated system around. Hopefully someone will pick up the product and move forward.

1-0 out of 5 stars Be careful
When I received this product, the software CD was cracked on its underside. When I called Dragon technical service and customer service, I was told that my only alternative was to wait for them to mail me a replacement CD.Waiting time:SIX WEEKS, no ifs, ands or buts. They have a huge backlog. The program cannot be downloaded from Dragon's website.Still, be careful as a 6-week wait does not speak well of the manufacturer.

4-0 out of 5 stars Dragon Naturally Speaking 5.0 Pref. USB
I used an older version and found it frustrating. I bought this version, with the USB connection for clearer transmission and better performance, and I am quite impressed. I use it to dictate medical notes and it has learned most of the technical/medical terms. I have spent, probably, 5-6 hours on it training and teaching it the medical terms. It doesn't cease to amaze me at how well it does. If it makes a mistake it can be corrected and will be much less likely to make the same mistake again. The digital USB converter can be a nightmare to install!

5-0 out of 5 stars NaturallySpeaking 5.0 USB is now even better
This product really works amazingly well.Right out of the box (after 5 minutes of training) you can get close to 92% accuracy. The program learns from errors as you correct them so it quickly becomes even more accurate.I generally get no more than one or two errors per paragraph.

The USB mic makes all the difference on a laptop. (Laptops generally work less well for speech regcognition because the density of components produces interference when using a standard headset mic.)

Not sure what happened with Carol (review below) but there must be some basic configuration problem with her system, incompatible sound card or microphone. The problem could be that if her daughter is using the product she may not be using the correct speech model for teens. The software is normally tuned for adult voices only, so recognition would be terrible if you used the regular 'speech model' for a teenager. I'd reccomend calling tech support for help since they'd be keenly interested in getting it to work properly for her.

This stuff really does work and PC Magazine and PC world seem to agree on that if your read their reviews.PC Magazine got 98% accuracy after initial training and half an hour corrections. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for the disabled my review of version 8 preferred
This is my review of version 8 preferred edition and its accuracy and dictation. I don't have the mobile recorder so I can review that at this time.

If you're reading this, You are interested in buying Dragon NaturallySpeaking version eight. I highly recommend it! I had versions of Dragon software, dating back to 1995. Let me tell you the software was clunky back then, being a quadriplegic, I used it to type and move the mouse. But as soon as I got a touchpad mouse. I dropped Dragon altogether. Step forward almost 10 years, I decided that I needed to send longer e-mails than two sentences (because that's all I could type, it gets tiring using only one hand and one knuckle on that hand). So I took the plunge drop the cash on Dragon, and after three days am totally satisfied.

I added up and running and dictating in less than 20 minutes. The accuracy is amazing I'm actually typing this by voice. Since I can use a touchpad, I do not use the Dragon NaturallySpeaking for mouse commands. But for dictating it is perfect and quick!!!

I'm using it with a 2 GHz processor, and it is fine. Getting it set up was a little quirky with my Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS. I'm actually using it with a tabletop condenser microphone, not the headset that they came with it (which I found to be quite uncomfortable). Since I'm unable to get the headset on my head, but a tabletop mike is working perfect.

So I recommend this product anyone who has a disability that makes typing difficult. Anybody who doesn't want to learn to type (though I think he would be lazy, just suck it up and learn) will find this are useful, actually quicker than typing. Almost hundred words a minute! The software is leaps and bounds above previous versions go for it! Enjoy!

3-0 out of 5 stars Not there yet...
As a newbie to voice recognition software, I was initially very impressed by Dragon NaturallySpeaking preferred mobile 8.0.I have now had the program for several weeks and can say unequivocally that I would not recommend it to someone who wishes to use voice recognition to create perfect documents. The amount of time and effort required to train the program -- to make the requisite corrections -- is quite significant.I would however recommend the program to anybody who would like to use voice recognition to create rough notes that do not require correction. In addition, I have found the included mobile recorder, almost useless. Finally, I would join the cacophony of disappointment over the pretty much nonexistent technical support.

4-0 out of 5 stars Dragon Naturally Speaking Mobile 8
After setting up and using Dragon NaturallySpeaking 8 Mobile it seems to work okay. The Preferred portion on the program works very well. The recorder takes a some time to get working. The best thing I have found the that works, is to use the headset that is provided with the system it seems to work fairly well with accuracy target equality in your sensitivity on high if you are never record directly into the recorder you need to put it at the same distance as you with the headset microphone in order for it to a eleminate mistakes.

The instructions are not very clear and how to set it up, that is why I think there's so much difficulty getting the work recorder to work properly.I agree with others with the poor support issue.I have not yet used to but find valuable information on when website like Know-brainer.I'm currently use in the recorder to write this report hope this helps.Anybody else needs any further information on how to set up the recorder, I would be happy to help.

The software that utilizes the headset/microphone directly into the computer works relatively well (in a totally silent room). However, this "mobile" version (where you dictate into a digital recorder then upload into your computer) did not work at all.I called SoftScan tech support and not only could they not help me, I was told if I called again, I would be charged for another tech session. I have since learned that Version 8 (Mobile) was marketed exclusively to AMAZON customers (and not the general public) and that the company has decided to drop this version because of problems with the digital recorder's software that cannot be fixed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very satisfied
I bought version 6 rather than 7 from the comments ofAmazon customers.

In years' past,I was a rapid 10 finger typist. But a year ago,I sustained a spinal cord injury causing numbness to my fingers.

With this software, I can type with an accuracy approaching what I could do when healthy. What I find remarkable is that, being Canadian, I tend to talk fast and slur a bit. Still, I find I can consistently achieve close to 90% accuracy.

One warning: this software needs a reasonably up to date computer. Those who comment negatively I suspect maybe installed their software on antiquated hardware.

If you have a good computer you should be able to install and up and running within half hour.

A tip: I got my software cheap on EBay- $50 cdn=$35 US. Again, get version 6 not 7.

1-0 out of 5 stars If you think upgrading, forget it!
I am running both German and English versions 4.0 and thought upgrading to 6.0 with Windows XP would be a good idea. Forget it! The program froze! I uninstalled and then reinstalled. Now, it would't accept the product key printed on the box. There is no support. I send the product back, losing [the cost of] S&H.
If you buy, you are in for a rough ride!

1-0 out of 5 stars Please do not ignore reading this!!!
If you are planning on buying any of ScanSoft's Dragon NaturallySpeaking software, I would urge you to first visit their website...to read up on their pricing scheme for tech support.

I quote, "You may contact ScanSoft Technical Support by email through the support section of this web site. Fill out a Problem Report Form and a response will be sent in a timely manner upon receipt. Each incident entered from the Problem Report Form with be charged $9.95. Email is a lower cost option to telephone support."

Nine dollars and ninety-five cents to get them to answer your tech support questions on their products?!?

But that's not the worst of it. Notice the last sentence of that quote. "Email is a lower cost option to telephone support."

Is it ever.

I quote further, "One free technical incident" support call per customer is allowed, each "Additional incidents $[money] each"; that's [money]cents for each additional call!

Consider yourself lucky, version 5 users don't even get the first free call.

So what does this mean? It means that if you don't get all of your problems solved in one phone call, or, heaven forbid, you have a problem somewhere down the line, you get the privilege of paying ScanSoft ...for any tech support you might need getting their product to run (and that's per call).

I wish you luck if you go ahead and buy this product; but please, don't just take my word for what I'm writing...do yourself a favor and check out their website for yourself first.

4-0 out of 5 stars Assist for persons with disabilities
I have the original DragonNaturally Speaking. Although it worked fairly well, I found I spent as much time and effort -through keyboard and mouse correction - as I would in typing text. Version 6 is easier to use, makes fewer errors, and requires less correction. As a wannabe novelist, I find any voice recognition program inhibits creativity, especially when there are others within hearing range. As a person with a disability, I find DNS-v6 very helpful in letter and e-mail writing. Version 6 definitely requires less keyboard and mouse correction, although that is still a concern. I like the correction boxes which present corrections in bold print. This definitely reduces correction time. ... Read more
