This was a good, solid program that worked well to synchronize my word documents. I purchased this program rather the word smith pro as I felt this was more updated to work with windows XP. I think there may be little difference after all. I would recommend this to be used in conjunction with a keyboard accessory. Amazing
If you have a Palm, ewven an older one, and are suffering from "Pocket PC envy", you'll love this valuable application.While it will not transform your Palm into a Pocket PC, it provides a close approximation of the MS Office suite found on the newer Pocket PCs and will increase the functionality of newer Palm models and other PDAs that run PalmOS (Handspring, Sony CLIO, etc.), and breath new life into older models.I am using an older Palm VII and this program has made it more useful than other.

What I love is the ability to download and display Word and Excel files, but more important, I like the fact that I can create documents that are compatible with those programs running on my PC. Another thing I like is the fact that this program works with every version of Windows from 95 through XP.Note that you need to be running Hotsynch manager 3.0 or higher and PalmOS 3.1 or higher to use this program.You'll also need a DVD on your PC because that's the media on which the program ships.

fast and reliable
I tried a few word processors, none of them matches Mariner Write.

MS Word:

Good-looking word processor. Big, a lot of features (too much actually), but it requires a big amount of RAM, therefore it's pretty slow in scrolling, saving...it's not very responsive in anything really, when typing you'll notice a delay, words appear on the screen later than you had typed them.
And I don't like the application to do the thinking for me, ofcourse you can uncheck a lot of options in the preference panel, but it takes a while before you know how.
It crashes and freezes randomly...and it's expensive too.

AbiWord:

Great, free word processor. A handsom fellow too, but it doesn't render my personal default font Helvetica smoothly.
When typing there's a delay, when deleting text with some fonts (Helvetica for instance) it leaves artifacts behind and deleting with backspace takes forever.
Although it requires less memory than Word, it's not faster.

The same with Nisus Writer expres which has some font rendering problems too...overall these word processors are too slow and not very responsive.

I like Apple's TextEdit a lot: fast, flexible, but you cannot zoom the window up to 150% or type a format manually, it goes from 128% (still too small) right up to 200% (too big)
Yes I can alter the screen resolution, using 800 x 600 instead of 1024 x 768, but a word processor must have a feature to alter the size to ones liking.

And then there's Mariner Write (3.6.5).
It's fast, almost as fast as TextEdit, it has a lot of features, more than I will ever use, but some common features I like TextEdit doesn't have, like Bullet, Indent in and out, tables etc.
It has the same beautiful font smoothing as TextEdit, without rendering problems AbiWord and Nisus Writer Express have.
It has a good spelling check and solid thesaurus (although Nisus Thesaurus (download it free!) is superior). It doesn't crash like Word, there isn't a delay when typing text (words appear on the screen at the same time you type them)...It does anything you like with ease and smoothly.
The appearance of the application itself isn't on par with Word or AbiWord, which look a lot sleaker, but who needs a great looking app when it's slow and unreliable?

The very first thing you notice when you load a Mariner Software product (Mariner Write or Mariner Calc) is how fast it loads.Unlike Appleworks, there is no waiting around.These products are fast!

A word processor is a word processor, or so you might think!Mariner Write has an excellent toolbar and is loaded with options.The display is clean and crisp; there are no unnecessary menus or icons displaying when you load Write.You can extensively change your display with the PREFERENCES menu.Colors, fonts, spelling, and keys can all be changed to suite your needs.

Your default blank document has style, alignment, font, font size, and effects drop down menus.These are fast and convenient!The ruler is can easily be modified.Each menu is loaded with extras and a really nice thing is that when you click on the FONT menu you get a true font WYSIWYG display of all your fonts.

In Mariner Write, the FILE menu gives you lots of extras.Summary info, count, and merge are readily available.It has a very nice Print Envelope option.Under the FORMAT menu, the Bullets and Borders and Fill options are complete and crammed full of options.

A major fault of Appleworks, in my opinion, is the number of steps required to insert a graphic in a word processing document, especially a graphic with wrap-around text.I forget every time how to do it and the help system is not very helpful.In Mariner Write - BOOM! - it is a straight forward and simple process!

All in all, for the price, this is a "must have" replacement for Appleworks and it is a great, inexpensive alternative to Microsoft Word.I used to compose my novels on Appleworks but with one look at Mariner Write, I was instantly hooked and I can confidently say that you will be too!Buy it!

Full featured replacement for MS Word - at much less $$$
If you're not wedded to MS products then this is definitely worth your time to examine (they also have a trial period demo at their website... What I like: small (no 100 MB install), fast, flexible, "save as" includes a PDF option, nice dictionaries already included.They also have a utility called "Drop Doc" which will automatically convert any MS Word file (.doc) to an RTF file that is then opened flawlessly by Write.So, now you can convert all those old documents without any difficulties.

What can be improved: changing the view size (from say, 100% to 150% can result in some slight blurriness of characters, depending on your font choice). That's it.

And there is a MS Excel alternative (Mariner Calc) too.

Word and Excel can do a lot of fancy things, but I only need and use probably 10% of their capabilities -- and for me Mariner Write (and Calc) do more than what I need, for a lot less $$. ... Read more
