Microsoft Word for Mac 2001
I have used Word for PC for years, only because I had to for office compatability in the PC system at work, but have always preferred Macintosh, though Jobs' NExt Computer word processing using Write-Now was by far the best computer yet. (Don't know what a NExt Unix-based computer was? Look into where Jobs was after first leaving Apple).
But for Word 2001 for MAC-complete compatibility with PC Word documents was promised, but I find that completely untrue. For example, the F7 key does not activate spell check in Word for Macintosh as in the PC program, at least not in my installation, and I can't find a keyboard equivalent for it to add on the Mac. Several steps have to be mouse activated rather than keyboard equivalents.
The greatest disappointment, however, is that WORD 2001 FOR MAC HAS TO RUN ON OS-9 AND APPARENTLY WON'T RUN ON OS 10.3, so it has to have OS-9 boot up every time you open a document or Word 2001 program.
Another downside was that my installed printer wouldn't work with OS-9, after I had finally gotten it to work with a Brother multifunction printer, scanner, fax, copier by downloading a driver update, but that is another frustrating story in that the driver date apparently preceded the printer manufacture date, but nobody bothered to include it in the printer software package coming with the printer. So then I had to install a printer driver to run off the OS 9 in order to print a document generated on Microsoft Word 2001.
It also bugs me the way Word X demo copy keeps popping up wanting me to order it, and I still don't know how to get rid of the demo copy that came on my new EMac.
Why did I get Word 2001 in the first place? Because I read on a review that people had trouble printing from Word for OS X!!!! I thought that Word 2001 might be more stable and have fewer bugs by now, but it isn't working for me, and I'm knuckling under and ordering Word for OS-X. Word 2001 does have a wonderful dictionary feature (though still mouse oriented only as far as I can tell) where one only has to put the cursor on any word, and click the dictionary icon, and the definition pops up. A keyboard equivalent would be wonderfully handy. So my chief complaint is that there are too many mouse oriented actions in the program rather than keyboard, it DOES NOT SEEM TO HAVE TRUE FULL COMPATABILITY, (though it will open PC Word documents), it has to run on OS-9, and has to print through OS-9 drivers. I just hope I can get some money back on Word for Mac 2001 for the wasted effort of having to learn the hard way because it did not work as advertised. ... Read more

$35 support from day one
Purchasers of Word X for Mac should be aware that Micrososft does not warranty their product.I purchased Word X software from Amazon about a month ago and had problems with printing out a document. On seeking help from Microsoft I was told that Microsoft does not warranty Word for Mac and that a minimum thirty-five dollar fee would be required for their help.

The first blockbuster application for OS X version 10.1!
I'm basing this review on the word X test Driver version, available on the Microsoft matopia site. From what I've seen so far, this is one very good app--everything has been made to work with the Aqua interface, the layout is quite easy to learn and use quickly, and I find myself using it more and more everyday. Of course, in the Test Drive doesn't have all of the features included--you can use the project gallery for the basics, but you'll have to wait for printing to be enabled, for example. The best part--when I redid my resume and send it as an attachment, I don't hear the old "resend it as a Word doc!" complaint anymore. I'll upgrade to Word X for sure! ... Read more

Basically the Same, with a New Surprise
What sold me on this upgrade was the other reviewers' testimonies about the complaints they would receive from PC owners about not being able to open Word documents created on a Mac. I began experiencing that problem, thinking it was a system issue rather than a bug in the 2001 software.

Anyway, I bought this upgrade because I didn't need the whole Office Suite, which is three times more expensive. I haven't had the chance to explore all of Word's new features, but so far I'm happy with it. The upgrade from Office 2001 was painless. The user interface is basically the same as the 2001 version, so there were no big learning curves.
Much to my surprise, I found out that I could save my document as a PDF file right from Word with one click of a button. I didn't have to go into Acrobat Acrobat or Distiller in order to accomplish this.
Recommended.

The best of the best.
I am teaching in college since 25 years. We always used Macintosh.
At home, I have a iMac. I used Office 2001,
which is a very good product. Then I had to install APPLE X, then I
bought Microsoft Office X (including Word X) for teacher. I am filled. It
took only 30 minutes to install it. Immediately I felt comfortable.
There are many improvements. And the items that I used more were
preserved, and improved. Word is very pretty, powerful, more powerful,
more quickly. All my documents of Office 2001 opened such as they
were. I did not lose any data. And the connection with the Web is the best to. I recommend it to my colleagues at work.

what can I use to upgrade...???
I have office 4.2.1 will this count as an upgrade???? I don't want to buy this and find out that it won't! I hate office, but love entourage and if I qualify for the upgrade, it's actually cheaper than buying entourage on its own!

Word X--just get it
I know the final version is still a few weeks away, BUt based on the test Drive version available now, word X for OS X holds ALOT of promise! With OS X 10.1, the whole app uses the same Aqua guidelines and features very well--the dialog boxes, icons, the way you can use and edit small images in your word docs, etc. Plus, you don't have to hear the old "send document x to us in word format" ever again :-)So even with some of the main features turned off in the test Drive, you'll see what great potential this version has for OS X users (but you'll need version 10.1) ... Very helpful
This software helped me get a job much easier than I thought it would be. The best feature is that you can automatically send your resume to lots of employers, and - surprisingly - they get back to you, as this doesn't go through the "spam channels" that annoy them. I have since allowed several of my friends to use it and they all got new jobs very easily. I give it a big PLUS!

WASTE OF MONEY
From the annoying "merlin" character who "guides" you, to the cluttered layout this is a miserable piece of software.It appears to have been thrown together at the last minute.There is no polish whatsoever.

It's a great tool
I've noticed a few others haven't liked this program.All I have to say is that I found it to be a usefull tool.I was completely blocked when I started looking for a job after three years.I had only a really old resume (somthing that was great for entry level..but not for someone who's been in the work force for awhile).This software allows you to keep your job search organized.I love the fact that you can customize each resume and letter.Heck I used this program to write my cover letters, thank you letters and my letter of resignation.

It won't do the work for you and like anything you get what you put into it.But I found this one to be a keeper and I reccomend it to anyone who's having a little problem getting started on your job seach...HAPPY HUNTING!Oh and I started my new job on Monday at a nice pay raise... ... Read more

Disappointing!
The product conflicted with other software I had installed on my computer andtheir tech support basically told me I was outta luck.They offer an "upgrade&quot... they don't offer the download version in their upgrade (their customer service told me I was outta luck).The Career counselor is not all it cracks up to be...very hokey and somewhat cheesy.Inputting into the program (once I get it running and "debugged") is fairly easy but the formats aren't very attractive.I was able to import it into my Word Processor (MSW) but it lost all formatting when I imported it.This was a very disappointing piece of software.

Better Than Nothing
As a fan of other products with the Kaplan name, I grabbed Resume Maker off the shelf the moment that I found it.My mistake!The software is on the cutting edge of very early Windows programs.It is anti-intuitive,very slow, and completely unforgiving of any error.Rather than thesoftware working for you, you will work for the software.As one exampleof too many, a card (a basic sub-element of the resume) will not print fromone page to the next; you just have a large blank spot at the top of thesecond page.However, with a great deal of formatting and editing, you canwork around this problem.My question:what fool thinks that the consumerbuys such a product for the thrill of spending hours outsmarting thesoftware?I do not recall the last time that I was this disappointed withany software.The only two good points that I can offer are:[1] ResumeMarker is better than nothing and [2] my mistake in buying this productcost me less than $30.00.(By the way, if you have this product, importwhatever resume that you have into Microsoft Word, clean it up, and get onwith the job search.) ...
