5-0 out of 5 stars Great Desktop Calculator
OK, so it's not the smallest portable calculator to try and jam in your pocket. It's not one you want to take to your Calculus class or figure out P & L statements for your million dollar business. What it is, is the best desktop calculator for doing basic, every day type of calculations like balancing your checkbook. The numbers on the keys are large and easy to read, it has a moveable decimal, and a handy backspace key for undoing an errant keystroke without clearing the entire entry. The display is nice and big, slightly tilted for easy viewing, and it has a non-volatile memory so it remembers your stored figures even when turned off. What sets the TI5018 apart from other similar calculators is that instead of shutting itself off automatically after a period of inaction, it has a manual off switch. I can't tell you how many times the battery-saving automatic shutoff on my old Casio wiped out 20 minutes of work when I paused for 5 minutes to answer the door. Besides, why do Solar powered devices need an auto-shutoff anyway?! After 5 years of heavy use in a dusty environment, the simple to use Texas Instruments TI5018 Desktop Calculator has performed flawlessly. I recently bought two other similar-looking calculators for my home, one from Sharp and one from Radio Shack, and returned them both. I am now purchasing a second Texas Instuments TI5018. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Very Basic But Very Good
I have the Casio MS70-L; while this model has been discontinued or is no longer stocked, it is functionally almost identical to the Casio SL-200TE Solar DualLeaf, except the SL-200TE folds in half to close, and the MS70-L does not fold. For everyday household usage, this calculator is hard to beat.It has a large, easy-to-read LCD display, and a rugged plastic body.

*thinks upon the many times mine has survived being dropped*

It runs off any light-source, and the light does not have to be bright. It handles all basic calculations, and the large keys make mistakes infrequent. This calculator's ability to fold closed transforms it from desk-only to desk-or-pocket usage.

4-0 out of 5 stars Black and White display, slow processing
I bought this version because it was cheap. It is very strong calculating machine compared to older generation but its lack of color and slow processing are great disadvantages. When you plot multiple graphs, the black and white display is a troubling. It is more so when you labor to spot the black tiny cursor on a black line. The slow processing is problematic during exam taking.

The other drawbacks are:
1- The manual is written backwards. You read instructions on how to enter data to find out that the notation would need more search to understand their meaning. The simplest thing such as turning on and off is cumbersome. The power key is colored like the rest of the keys, while the alpha key is colored in red. Turning the device off requires two keys, Shift + AC/on.

2- The F1-6 keys need longer time to relate what they do to the mode menu. I discovered their function by mere coincidence.

3- If you are looking for fast solution by using the index, you would not find terms such as exponent or factorials. It might take a whole day to learn how to get around these simple calculations.

4- Syntax errors appear on the display without any hint on the kind of error or on how to go back to previous step. You might have to experiment with the AC/on key or Exit key to get out of that.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
This calculator does everything the TI-83+ does and more. (I was very hesitant about purchasing this calculator, because there were some features I had to have for class, but so far so good.) Unlike the TI-83+, the menu is very easy to use and understand.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great calculator (I'm a teacher and an engineer)
This calculator is as good or better than my TI 83 plus for much less money. Full price this calculator is only 49.99. I found for even less elsewhere. The graphical icon menu makes it very user friendly without having to study the thick manual. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Go figure
Hello Everyone,

I purchased this little gem after my Radio Shack EC-317 went south for the winter, summer, spring and fall.(I guess after 12 years of service, it has a right to kick-off)I had one heck of a time finding SOMEONE, that could tell me what this Material Calculator could actually do. Calculated Industries makes several models to choose from, including this model (ProjectCalc Plus)which range in price from [money amount]. I chose the ProjectCalc Plus because, what I was looking for was, a calculator that would convert decimals to fractions and then back again. Mind you ALL the Calculated Industries models will do this BUT, the ADVERTISING on the packaging isn't CLEAR ON THIS!!! The biggest problem I had, was just finding out EXACTLY what this little unit would or wouldn't do.

After all is said and done, I think this unit is a great deal for the price([money amount]). Mind you, it won't find run and rise for stair treads but, it does just about everything else. If I have anything negative to say about the unit, it's this, my tired old eyes have one heck of a hard time reading all the writing around the buttons on it. Perhaps someone from Calculated Industries will read this review, and put this problem before the design team for an improved version?! So, do you need to spend [money amount] for a calculator, perhaps, but I DIDN'T and I'll bet that MOST folks won't have to either.

To conclude, it's a good unit at a fair price.

4-0 out of 5 stars Depends on what you need a calculator for
If you are in grades 4-8 this is a wonderful calculator to explore and formalize your understanding of the math concepts. It has many nice features. However if you need a graphing calculator that you will use through high school use the TI-83 Plus Silver Edition. If you are purchasing during your high school years you may want to consider even starting with a higher caliber calculator than this as a TI-83 Plus will not take you through very many college level math courses until you need something more substantial in available functions.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good calculator--but I would save the money for a better one
Well....this calculator has many features for middle school students, butreally is it worth it ? If you're in middle school, then you probably won'tneed such an expensive calculator, because you really don't need to use acalculator to graph. If you are learning graphing, you might not be able touse it one the test. In my opinion, I would buy one of those cheaperplainly scientific calculators. They get the job done and they are cheaper. But, if you really want to get a graphing calculator, I would suggest theTI-83 plus. Right here on Amazon.com, it being sold at $86.99, CHEAPER thanthis one and with more functions!!!!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars The TI 73
The TI 73 is the best. At least in my opinion, it is the best for all thepeople in Middle School. If you are in Middle school at this moment and youneed a graphing calculator for math or science, don't go out and spend alotof money on another kind of calculator. The TI 73 is fit for the job!

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a great tool, made even greater with the Pro model
You can download from Calculated Industries a free full blown version of their PC Software version of Construction Master Pro Calculator. It works for 30 days without any restrictions. That is what got me hooked. Once I saw what you could do for calculating board feet, and lots of other calculations, I knew I had to have more than the trial version. With C Industries Construction Master Pro, you are currently receiving the software version (a 30 some dollar value in itself) for free with the purchase of the calculator. It is included in the box. Considering the Pro is only going for a few more dollars than the IV version, it makes it a no brainer to buy that model instead.
Since I bought the pro, I am going to go over and write a review on that one instead. It has all of the features of the IV and then some. It comes in a great looking case, and has a front cover that mounts on the back when not in use. It looks great, and is even greater for its usefulness. Hope this helps.

5-0 out of 5 stars Saves you time (and some brain cramps, too!).
I have a looooong way to go to even be close to tapping the full capabilities of this little unit. I've only had it for a month or so, and I've used it for lots of things. The feet-inch-fractions feature is just the best. The magnetic case works pretty well. If you find yourself using your pencil for a lot of figuring when you're on the job, you might consider giving this a try.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE "A" I NEVER GOT
SOME PEOPLE ARE NOT MATH GENIUSES, THIS WILL MAKE YOU ONE. SPEED UP THE JOB, LOOK LIKE A SCHOLAR, IMPRESS YOUR FRIENDS. THIS IS THE TOOL TO HAVE.

5-0 out of 5 stars Stairs can be a scary thing
I have been building my own house now for the past 2 years and finally getting to the end. When I did my first set of stairs, I was petrified I would mess it up - is the angle right, will they feel right going up andthen down, just how many risers do I need, anyway. There are plenty ofrules about building stairs - the sum of 2 risers and 1 tread = 25 inches, and so on.With this hummer, put all that fancy stuff aside.Make therise and run measurements, push the answer button, and start cutting.Thisis probably not a must-have item for most do-it-yourselfers, but if youhave a big project and are doing your own design work, I would stronglyrecommend one. And, it fits in your pocket.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rafter book no longer needed
Was doing a house and the roof span was more than what the blue book had available. Went out and bought "The Ultimate Calculator" and have not used the blue book since. The instruction book is very user friendly. Iuse the calculator every chance I get which sometimes is not enough. I ameven thinking about getting a second one for my lead carpenter. In myopinion, even at twice the price, it is still very much worth the money. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for tests.Lacks accuracy and convenient features
FX-260SOLAR is light, slim, and durable. This is also the official calculator for use on GED Math tests and is permitted for use on SAT and PSAT/NMSQT.It is solar-powered meaning you won't be stuck with a dead calculator in the middle of a test. The "mode" menu is printed beneath the screen so that you don't need the user's guide again.(Trust me.This is a BIG plus!)It also handles fraction calculation, converts degrees/minutes/seconds both ways, and computes mean and standard deviation.

However, it lacks the HEX-OCT-BIN conversion and complex number calculation features to make it an all-around technical calculator.Users also need to press SHIFT to use the "1/x" and "nCr" functions. In comparison, Casio FX-300MS offers a much more convenient layout and costs only $1 more with the sale going on now (April 2005).

On the numerical side, this model does not store enough digits to be a good financial calculator. For example, this model evaluates 200000 (1 + 0.06/360)^(360*30) to about 1209747.95.A more accurate answer should be about 1209748.04.TI got it; Casio did't.Although the difference is so small that it often doesn't matter in highschool problems, it looks bad on presentation.

5-0 out of 5 stars A trusty adding machine
I've used Casio calculators for over 20 years and love them.Good keypad layout, easy-to-use buttons, intuitive commands. This scientific calculator is perfect for engineering students.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Casio quality for an excellent price
I have been using Casio electronics for over a decade now -- starting with first data bank and touch screen watches. The brand has never failed me, so I have chosen Casio FX-260 over TI and Sharp competitors again. The calculator is great for graduate classes in Computer Science and Finance for sure (this is what I am using it for), and I am certain it will be more than enough for Physics, Chemistry, and other sciences. Compact design, a high-contrast screen, rubber keys -- everything is just right. And if I want to do graphing, I will use Matlab. Highly recommend!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for the price!
Needed a scientific calculator for a chemistry course and I found this one to be very easy to use....

5-0 out of 5 stars Great calculator for the price!!
This calculator is worth at least three time the price.I know of at least 2 PhD's who use it at the Colorado School of Mines. It is a rugged and compact machine that you can take into the field without any problems.I does most any calculation. For heavy calculations, I use a lap top. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars worthwhile
Calculators as the H.P. 49 II, H.P. 48 II, T.I. 89, or T.I. 92 are beyond the average high school or Junior Collage student's needs.

Sad experience ... giving fancy, high priced, calculators to 10 year olds scares them into English majors or making french fries at a drive thru.

The various `flavors' of the T.I. 83 and T.I. 84 have become the high school 'standard'.

The 288 pages of documentation for this calculator are clearly written and straightforward. The subject is not at the level of complexity which has lead to some H.P. manuals and user guides being hard to read and understand. [The manual can be downloaded here.]

In case you like technical comparisons of calculators there is one between the H. P. 39+ and the T.I. 83+ at the hpcalc.web site.

This calculator has enough functions and capabilites, `out of the box' to carry many through Junior Collage. Its accuracy is greater than a T.I 83+. Its screen, larger than the T.I. 83+ ... is big enough for easy reading.

At other stages of education other calculators, including several from T.I., are the best but for basic homeschooling in late middle school or high school for a kid who will never be a `geek' this is a fine, easy to use machine.

Another group which this calculator is `perfect' is those, as I, who are retired from `semi- geeky' occupations and enjoy Number Theory, recreational math ... what some of the `high tone' folks at MIT and CALTECH call `Pop - Math' . And while very likely most of that math could be done on a $22 T.I. Scientific 36X Solar single line calculator [a really nice and useful ealculator] the H.P. feels better in my hand and anyway by buying a 39+ I am saving $30 over a 83+ or $40 over a 84+.

5-0 out of 5 stars The 39g+ is clearly a winner
The Hp 39g+ is overall a decent calculator for you basic middle school and high school needs.

--Pros-
(1) The keys are plastic (finally) and much more stable.
(2) The overall system is more stable and less prone to crash.
(3) The Hp 39g+ has many more functions than the TI- 83+ (nearly 200 more) and when compared, it becomes overwhelmingly obvious that the 39g+ blows the Ti 83+ out of the water.
(4) The Hp 39g+ is overall cheaper, and better for your money.
(5) It can compute values up to the 499th power, while the Ti can only go to the 99th power.
(6) It has a Root Solver on it, which basically allows you to solve algebraic equations (example: 2x^2=67/6+56= SQRT6*sin(5^45)
(7) Less batteries are used in the Hp-39g+. Its three triple "A's" compared to four double "A's"
(8) The 39 has a bigger screen with more contrast.
(9) The Pretty Print option allows you to see equations in a form which they would look like in a textbook.

--Cons-
(1) The keys are noisy; they make an annoying clicking sound when on a surface.
(2) The connection to a computer is somewhat finicky, and a large amount of the programs on various sites don't work on the 39g+ or are way too fast. That is because the old programs were designed for a much slower system.
(3) Programs are essentially saved twice, so the same program as a TI on an Hp will be a lot bigger.
(4) The lack of flash memory on the 39g+ makes programs less secure.

Overall, the 39g+ is a great calculator and I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A modern marvel
When I started high school I received one of these little calculators as a gift, and during four years it accompanied me through many classes. For four years I did not have a single problem with it even though it was put to the test in many occasions.Very sturdy is the perfect description I can give, and the fact that it does not require a battery is a major plus.

Now in college I use a TI-89 Titanium, but in my pocket I always carry my TI-36.

5-0 out of 5 stars A GOOD ONE
Amazon shipped the old model which is great by me. This machine is as close to a postfix calculator as T.I. makesThe best scientific [non graphing] calculator made by T.I.

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this calculator
I'm going back to college to change careers - a switch from the arts to pre-med. While all the eighteen-year-olds have hundred dollar TI graphing calculators, I bought this little beauty, and its been my trusty mate through Chemistry, Calculus, Physics, Statistics and the like. It is simple and no-nonsense, and has everything you need. And I never have to worry about battery power.

The only down side? I misplaced it for the first time the other day, and I have to get a new one. I actually am so used to my old one, I dislike the new redesign and I'm going to search for the model with the purple lettering that people complain about. Its really not a big deal, folks.

5-0 out of 5 stars A GREAT buy in an engineering calculator!!!
This is a very easy calculator to use. At around $20, it performs some very useful functions, such as linear regression, S.D., English/SI conversions, fraction/decimal conversions, etc. Everything an engineer needs. I bought one of these on a last-minute deal and was quite surprised at how easy it was to learn how to QUICKLY make complex calculations with minimal effort.

Some talk has been made in other reviews of the 3rd function's purple text. Yes, it IS a little difficult to read, but TI has recently released a newer version of this calculator that has addressed this (I had a chance to play with a new one today while I was picking up some photos at a discount store). The current version (not pictured here) is very easy to read.

About the only things I would like to see changed would be the addition of a 2-line display and dual power (sorry, the solar power is a little slow sometimes in dim light). Are you listening TI?

All in all, at $20, I consider this a best buy and will probably purchase more for work, home, school, and any other calculator need I have.

2-0 out of 5 stars Nice Layout But Has Flaws
In terms of price and features, this is a nice scientific calculator. The layout of the functions is quite apt. I like the case design and the cover. It has only a one-line display but I can live with that. The purple text used to label the functions activated by the "3rd" key is admittedly a little hard to read.

However, consider this calculation and its result:

(262144 * 4096) - (2^18 * 2^12) = -0.01

The correct answer, obviously, is 0. That may be a silly calculation to perform, but I actually did this once as a check.

TI's support - via email - suggests that this is a normal rounding error. I am not sure that this is acceptable in a calculator of this class. The size of the operands doesn't seem unreasonably large.

If it were not for that, I would give the calculator 4 stars. It's really too bad because I like the layout of this calculator MUCH better than that of the Casio. But I worry about getting other errors that won't be immediately obvious to me.

I can't prove one or the other how likely this rounding error is to happen in "typical" calculations. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

The Hewlett-Packard PC Connectivity Kit for HP Calculators is the latest version (3.04) of the popular accessory that links HP 48 and 49 series calculators to each other or to an extensive array of online software. With the Connectivity Kit, you can download math packages, educational tools, and challenging games; you can transfer files between HP calculators; and you can expand the uses and versatility of your calculator.

HP's Connectivity Kit contains a 32-bit Windows application that includes a screen capture utility and a flash ROM updater for the 49G calculator. It also includes a 1.5-meter serial cable, 10-pin to 4-pin connector, and a user's guide. The kit unit runs under Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT 4.0, or Windows 2000 on an IBM-compatible PC. It is powered by four AA batteries, which are included in the package. The system requires an open serial port (not USB), 5 MB of available disk space, VGA or higher display, and a CD-ROM drive.

Hewlett Packard provides a notice to Windows 95 users that Windows 95 has a defect in some versions of the system library called comctl32.dll. If you have problems with the Connectivity Kit, you may need to update the library. The indicators pointing to an upgrade are a strange appearance to the tool bar and a disabling of double clicking or right mouse buttons. For more information, visit HP's Web site. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Too expensive
You can make your own cable and the software is on the net.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have accessory.........but..........
This is a wonderful accessory to your 49g, and I have benefitted immensely from the cable. But, I purchased the cable by itself...It goes without saying that the large breadth of additional programs, and the ability to contiuously update the ROM are features that you almost can't live without, but there is no sense in living without some of your hard earned cash. The cable can be purchased stand-alone from several on-line vendors. ...I purchased anadditional USB port adapter for this cable.I rate the product itself very, very highly, but I rate the price for the unneccessary software you are being charged for as low as possible.Good Luck!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding features, but there are several negatives!
Outstanding features, but there are several negatives!

I am a long-time HP loyalist, having used HP calculators for the past 25+ years.I have used a 48SX for the last 10 years, and recently decided to acquire a 49G to aid me in some college level math classes (algebra & calculus).

I find that the 49G has a wealth of advanced features including a greatly improved equation writer, and the CAS system is very, very nice also.If you want a feature-rich calculator, look no further, but there are three characteristics that I consider negative:

1. The manuals are possibly the worst I have yet seen - they lack a great deal of information.Even with the Advanced User Guide, there should be many more examples.

2. The keys are quite different than any previous model HP that I have ever worked with (I have owned six HP's so far, not including the 49G), and I believe that they are definitely a step backward.I find that I have to press harder, and sometimes even twice to get the function / number entered. The keys feel cheaper to me than any previous model; they appear to be molded rubber instead of plastic.I have never had a key on any of my previous HP calculators wear off, even after extended use, but I have seen a photo of a 49G owned by a user where the label had worn off.I consider this a serious issue that I hope HP will correct in future calculators.

3. The colors of the left and right-shifted functions on the 49G are red and blue, and is tough to see in some ordinary lighting situations against the brushed light-blue background of the faceplate.Although the 49G color pattern is cool and modern looking, the color pattern of the 48SX or 48GX series are much easier to see.I would far prefer the color patterns on the older models for ease of visibility over the new color pattern any day.

In closing, the new functionality is very impressive, but I believe that HP made three serious blunders on this calculator series.I hope that the development team working on the next generation calculator from HP will learn a lesson that newer is not always better, and that you should change a characteristic only if it is an improvement.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have
This Kit is a necessity for all those with HP 49s. It allows you to update your calculator's ROM, which will fix the latest bugs, speed up performance, and add new features. Also, the kit will allow you to download a wide range of tools, enhancements, and games for your calculator. ...This kit is must for those who want to use their calculator to its full potential.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome!
This kit will help make your calculator more than a calculator--it'll make it a real man/woman!This kit will not only enable you to produce faster results, it will give your calculator's ego that little boost that helps it along in life.Tired of temperamental function keys?Get this kit, guaranteed to increase your odds of hitting the right keys. And if that isn't enough, it comes complete with a little manual detailing how to hook it all up for the long and continued health of your baby. ...
