Effective, but hardly "Care-Free"
I am finally very happy with this humidifier, now that I have at last figured out how to best clean it (despite the unfortunately inaccurate owner's manual). This unit does require an hour or so of maintenance per week. Vinegar does not effectively clean the evaporation grid, as the manual states. You have to soak the grid in a very mild bleach solution every week or so, or slime starts building up. The other parts of the unit (that get wet) also need extra cleaning every few weeks.
On the upside, this humidifier does an excellent job putting water into the air, and that is the bottom line for a humidifier! The fan is noisy on high speed though. The best feature of this unit is that it costs almost nothing to operate. I do recommend buying an additional evaporation grid from Hunter, the price is very reasonable and well worth it. The base and grid frame are dishwasher safe, a nice feature.
If you're willing to spend the time doing routine cleaning, there's a lot to like about this humidifier. Have owned mine for 2.5 years now and was happy (and bored) enough to write this!

Very loud and leaks!
I thought this was going to be great! From the start it was loud....but many are. As time went on it got louder and as another reviewer said it sounds like the fans are hitting something. If its not completely level it leaks ... we had stains on the ceiling underneath this unit. If you are going to spend the money buy the Slant Fin UV humidifier and get your money's worth!

Nice concept humidifier...
I have owned this humidifier for over a year. It does a lot of things really well and have only a few complaints about this humidifier. First of all, let's talk about speeds. There is a low and high speed on this humidifier. The low is fairly low and you can hear the water trickling down the metal filters. Its a somewhat pleasant noise in fact. High is very high and powerful and makes a fair amount of noise. The noise is not disturbing to me and in fact, helped to drown out a lot of background noise so I can sleep peacefully. I could hear dogs barking, kids screaming through the neighborhood, but this humidifier is loud enough so I could barely hear the annoyances and sleep. If you live in a quiet area, you may then find it disturbing if you aren't used to it.

Next, the maintenance. This is where we run into some problems. The metal non disposable filters recommend you soak them in vinegar to remove mineral deposits that form. There is an antimicrobial coating on these filters to help inhibit growth of harmful bacteria and suggest that running these through the dishwasher will ruin the antimicrobial protection. Well, I've owned this for over a year, and there was so much hard water deposits on these filters that they were ineffective. I had to run it through the dishwasher to clean them up. The vinegar did nothing to help remove these things. It is also nice that the base is dishwasher safe, but after extended use, it is clear that brown algae like material was forming all over the inside of the unit as well, by the motor. This can't be healthy to breathe in, but you can't run that portion through the dishwasher. Also, the venting that brings in the are was getting filthy and some deposits were forming there as well. I've had to take the unit apart as much as possible, and put the plastic pieces I've unscrewed into the dishwasher as well to get the unit somewhat clean again. The areas around the motor are very difficult to clean and I end up using a thin brillo pad to try to wipe off the brown slimy scum that forms. I even take off the outgoing vent cover so I can wipe the fan blades. This unit is not easy to clean at all, but it works better then most other humidifiers I've bought before.

An improvement in design would be to perhaps blow air into the unit with the fan, rather then sucking moist air out with the fan. When you are sucking the moist air out of the system, more moving parts seem to get wet and slimy. I'm looking into the Venta Airwasher system which does this, but its very expensive.

The humidistat works well, but the refill light is on too often now. Some water has somehow gotten into the float that triggers the light. I'm not sure how to get the water out of the float.

This unit IS effective, but you have to keep it clean.

Worked fine for a while, but then went crazy.
I originally purchased the Hunter humidifier based upon internet reviews.It certainly worked in the beginning to humidify the room quickly.The problem is that the unit is pretty noisy when new, and became awful as time progressed.It's worth noting that I can sleep through almost anything, living in noisy New York City as I do.As such, I returned the unit and got a Hamilton Beach instead.I think that it is the better, and quieter, humidifier.

Great product -Poor Design
We purchased this humidifier and within 7 days, it was returned. The fans blades kept hitting on something inside the fan housing and on closer inspection, they have placed part of the electrical connection inside the housing and secured it with a plastic tighener - bad idea. The clicking sound drove me nuts.It sounded like the cards you would place on the rear tire of your bike when you were a kid.I have contacted Hunter about this problem and hope that they rectify it.The product works great and except for the noise, performed very well. ... Honeywell is bad news.
I purchased the Honeywell warm-mist humidifier in December 2004.The machine died after 20 days.We only ran it at night and it worked fine until it died.The warranty is for five years.However, it costs $10 for a repair service fee in addition to the cost of shipping it to Massachussetts.After all that I may as well buy another humidifier.This time another brand.

So far so good
Pros -
Quiet.I have it right next to my bed.Other than the occasional blurb (water bubble), it's very quiet.

Remote is useful.No need to get out of bed to turn it on.

No filter to buy.Easy to clean.

Room for Improvement -
The humidity meter is useless.It started at 20%, and kept it at 20%-25% after a whole night on high.The room is only 12 by 12, so it has to be wrong.This also means, my humidifyer will never turn itself off, because I set it to 60%.

I think the meter is measuring what's on the floor level.I have hard wood floor, maybe that's why?

The LCD display is impossible to read when humidifyer is placed on floor.You have to kneel down to read.

First few time, the vapor has a weird smell.

Cons -
It's not really 3 gallons.On high, it'll run for about 5-6 hours only.On low, it'll run for about 10 hours.

Not easy to change water.You have to pull the container out, then flip it over to fill it, and flip it back to put it in.Seniors may not have the strength to do it.

When water run out, it just blinks with the RESET icon.It doesn't shut itself off.And after a couple weeks, I cannot press the RESET button to reset it.I have to unplug / replug the power.It also started a burnt smell, which worries me.

Works for me
Have had this unit for almost 2 years.Love this unit and planning to buy another because I've moved into a bigger place. I've not had any problems with it whatsoever.

Features I like about this unit:
-- the tank lasts a good 7-8 hours at the high level so I turn it on before I go to sleep and don't have to wake up and refill in the middle of the night.
-- almost maintenance free.I only have to wash it once every year (after winter) before storing for the next winter.I've seen another review where more washings may be necessary (probably due to hard water).
-- no filters to use (cool mist humidifiers require this).This is probably a personal preference but I don't like the idea of spending $$ to buy filters.

What I don't like about the unit:
-- humidity gauge is useless/unreliable.At first I tried using the humidity gauge to control the unit's operation but soon I find it to be in accurate.What I do now is let it run till the tank runs out, or use the timer.
-- this unit is extremely quiet, except for the occasional gurgling when the water through the tank.

Both things I don't like about are really minor (to me) or I wouldnt' have kept it.But they are the same reasons I'm giving it 4 instead of 5 stars.

Broke After a Week
I've had my humidifier for only a week and it is already broken. I ran it once a day or so until it was empty. Then one morning I checked on it to find that it was off. It just shut down on it's own and I can't get any power.

Stop working after one winter
Worked for one winter. And this year after using it twice it stopped working. Right now it can't be turned on and once it's plugged in the digital display just blinks. Called www.kaz.com and I have to pay $30 to cover the cost for shipping to have it fixed.

By the way, my friend got the same unit a week after I got mine.
Her unit is acting the same way now....Does that mean they have really good 'Quality Control' ??

Not a great product, despite Consumer Reports review
I agree with other reviewers about humidistat cycling on and off. I ended up not using the auto feature. Also, once the tank gets low, it starts to rattle a bit in the base and is no longer "whisper quiet." Finally, our house has old steam heat radiators and our room is 13x13 with 9 foot ceilings and the tank did not last the night during most of December and January when set to 40%. I did, however, find the replacement filters easily at Target. I would not recommend this humidifier.

Noisy and Leaks
I read several reviews on this including consumer reports trying to find a unit with a timer. I found this unit to be noisy and water leaked from the base all over the table and floor the first time I used it - I returned the unit and would not recommend this unit to others.

noise blower
I agree with one reviewer that the humidistat is regulated in a very tite range causing it to cycle on and off very frequently.I don't agree with the fan noise.I found it to be very noisy compaired to the two Bemis humisifiers I had for the past two years. I admit they don't have the air ionizer and other features but at least I can forget they are there.Oh and the wick is hard to find.

I would not recommend this product.
I bought this humidifier on the recommendation of Consumer Reports.It's easy enough to clean and handles hard water well.However, it is as loud as a box fan and it leaves a puddle underneath itself.In addition, filters for this model are somewhat hard to find.Most noticeable among this model's drawbacks is that it constantly flips on and off when you put it into automatic mode ("Accu-Stat").My wife and I are going to return it and purchase a quieter, warm-mist humidifier with no filters to replace.

Difficult locating replacement filters
This humidifier is exceptional in that it also incorporates an air filter along with the wick -- a definite bonus in an arid household filled with dog dander.

Unfortunately, although I bought the unit at Menards (a regional big-box home improvement store)just before Christmas, Menards doesn't stock the replacement filters.I am thrashing around online searching for the replacement filters, still with no success.

Nostalgic; a good buy & great looking
I, like most everyone else, bought this b/c it reminded me of one my grandmother had.It was pretty easy for me to assemble and seems quiet sturdy! I love the red color and the memories it brings back when I walk through my kitchen.I'll probably have to buy another one so the kids will both have one of their own.

Nice addition to my kitchen/dining
I was given this stool as a gift (fully assembled).It is quite heavy so it is not something I would use as a utility chair.On the other hand It's weight and sturdiness are perfect to allow my 2 year old son to help me in the kitchen then pull him to the dining room table for dinner (I actually got rid of our highchair.)SO if you have a purpose and need for it - then go for it - otherwise find something else. Oh the way the stairs retracted is of poor design - but they work.

I love my retro chair / step stool!
My husband and I had no problems putting this chair together. It is quite sturdy. My young grandsons enjoy using it as much as I do. The track system for the steps does not stay in place, however this is a minor problem for me. I looked everywhere for one of these chairs and I was very pleased to find it. The red color is fun and cheery. I have back pain and this chair makes it much less painful to work in the kitchen for long periods of time.

Not perfect, but still a good buy
I bought this because my grandparents had a similar stool when I was growing up. Although the quality of this one isn't as good as the old one, it still serves its purpose in my kitchen. I've also gotten many compliments on it. All-in-all, I am quite satisfied with my purchase. (It was difficult to assemble with the -tools- included.)

Not what it seems
I selected this chair over the white chair/step stool, also offered through Target, because it looked sturdier. However, the parts are so poorly constructed that they do not fit together well, and there is a significant wobble to the legs. The sliding mechanism for the steps is primitive and constantly derails. I bought this stool as a perch for my 2-year old daughter to watch me work in the kitchen, but it is so unstable that I am afraid to let her climb on it.
Also, while the assembly instructions are easy to follow, either the screws and/or the accompanying Allen wrench are too flimsy. I could not tighten the screws properly before the wrench was completely stripped. ... Read more

Works well but brakes often
I have bought this humidifier ... twice. It works well, but with proper maintainence the electronic control panel broke. I sent it back to the company and got a brand new one in return. I used it in the same manner, and now the new one's control pannel is not working. I would suggest finding another humidifier.

(OWNED 4 YEARS) Best Humidifier I've ever owned!!
We have been using this humidifier for over three(now 4) years.

I'll go through all others complaints.

1. Broken handle.All humidifiers are built a little flimsy; just be careful! Ours has never broken.When full don't be tough with the handles. This isn't a pickup truck people!!

2. Won't humidify room. This is not a whole house unit.We have used it regularly in bedrooms and small apartments and considering the size it works very well.If you have forced air do not leave the fan on continuoisly (although we do occasionally) and close the door to your bedroom. When the heat kicks in; ours turns on and recovers the humidity in the room easily.

3. Leaks.There is a built in resevoir area for leaking. Ours over three years has only done this a few times and never enough to actually leak on the floor or outside the machine.
If your unit leaks all the time use hot water.Cold water will expand on the machine as it heats a little; forcing extra water out.Hot water will cool and shrink as it sits on the machine.

4. Not accuate.You got me? Ours has been perfect.

5. Rotted seal. Duh! When done with the unit; store with cap off of the tank. This will avoid all humidity problems.

6. Hard to clean.All burner humidifiers are hard to clean.I clean ours about once a week.I wash out all the peices by hand and hot water to remove minerals. The burner area itself I usually use hot water and my fingers to loosen up the minerals. I don't think this is too bad.I leave some minerals on the burner itself to avoid damage but who cares?I've only used vinegar at the end of the seasons. We do however have soft water.

I hope this helps people. We've used ours every evening and night in Minnesota. We've never had any problems.It even heats up the room a little which the misses likes a great deal.

The seal below the burner started leaking into the machine.
This caused the machine to do some strange things.
So, I dried it out; and cleaned the inside of the machine.
It ends up that the single screw that holds the burner and seal down on machine came loose. This might explain all the problems with leaking and such others have had. Worked great since then.

Looks like we'll get another year out of it!!!

Needs improvement
This worked well for one season then leaked water everywhere. The water shorted out the controls - was lucky there wasn't a fire. It never worked the same again. I gave it two stars because when it did work, it kept the humidity at a comfortable level. If I buy a digital humidifier, I'd look for one with the controls anywhere but under the water supply.

Great potential, but had many flaws
We are currently on our second of this same model and we have had numerous problems with them both. While this vaporizer did work well over a short period of time it does have a few serious problems. First it's difficult to clean and often get's neglected, the large carrying handle on the bottom of the tank breaks off every time after about a year of use, the digital controls start malfunctioning about the same time as the broken handle making the unit completely useless or leaves it doing strange things and displaying weird characters, they leak water into the controls causing it to short out with loud internal sparks. We love this unit if only it would keep working for more than a year!

Watch out if you own this
This thing got burnt the other day.
