5-0 out of 5 stars Best MP3 Player for your Money!
Overall, this player packs more punch than all the others. No other player can compete in storage capacity (you can buy additional storageto the 32MB included here), and the eGo has more innovative features, such asMP3Mail and Interactivity. Using the i2Go website, you can customize yourown news, sports, and weather content for downloading to your eGo. The eGocan also load an IBM microdrive for a whopping 340mb of storage space, or680mb if you buy two microdrives and the optional Compact Flash ExpansionSlot! Also, it's not locked into a certain amount of memory, you can addmore as the flash card technology improves. It's also slick-looking andperfect for the car. The eGo is a great product and well worth the money.

5-0 out of 5 stars The eGo does a lot more than I expected
I bought the 32MB eGo player about 4 months ago.Since then, the company who makes it, i2Go, has made tons of improvements which I just download from the desktop software, the MP3Agent.I love it.I use it a lot in mycar - it can play through the car stereo. The coolest is that I can dragand drop my MP3 files from my own collection OR go to i2Go's website andbuild a program that is the stuff I want to listen to - like news, sports, weather, entertainment info, and music.

I'm actually going to buy morememory (an additional 64MB) from i2Go because I find it better thanlistening to the radio - more customized for me.The customization, expandability and upgradeability options are awesome!

I have played witha friends MP3 player (not an eGo) and the eGo has great sound qualitytoo.

I highly recommend this product for someone who spends a lot of timeon the go. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars DM-1 is great; ignore the bad reviews
I use this DM-1 every day to record meetings at a conference table. It picks up great, is reliable, easy to use.And with no mic.Do not use the mic!It is better without the mic.

All the hooey about files and blah blah that people made complaints about, who cares!Just record your day's worth of proceedings, transfer it to your PC, back it up somewhere, and the next time you use the recorder, then delete the audio.

Just know that you get crisp, loud, clear recording on this unit.I know at least 10 people who use the DM-1 and they all love it.

I am talking about PEOPLE TALKING and not music.I have no idea how it is for music and don't care. This review is 100% about talking that you're recording.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great device. Should be less expensive.
Long battery life, good storage, easy to use, usb connectivity works great on Apple Macintosh computers, only down side is you have to download playback software at Olympus website. this should be shipped on CD. there is no excuse for that omission as this software is over a year old when i bought recorder. there also seems to be no way to easily convert their audio format into the more common mp3 format. The price is a bit much too. Other than that, i highly recoomend this product.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent to recorder lectures
I have used DM-1 to recorde lectures, and I am truly impressed by the quality of this unit. The microphone can pick up clear audio even when I sit several rows away from the instructor. The 64MB card can hold more than 10 hours of lectures. The unit accepts Ni-MH rechargeable batteries. So I keep two sets handy, and I never run out of batteries. When I come home, I can easily download the lectures to my PC via USB cable, and it sounds excellent on my computer.I love this unit!I think it is specifically designed for students to record lectures.

2-0 out of 5 stars I want my money back!
Please read the other 2 star reviews before buying! I didn't and... I wish I could have my money back.

The product is just average. Hardly deserving the Olympus brand.
As a recorder it... records! No editing, no inserting, if you want to see the date/hour data you have to go to the begining of the recording and be fast as the info will vanish in a split second.

Also, if you rewind when listening at low volume, the volume will decrease! There are small software bugs like these, not serious but annoying. The bateries will run out much faster than expected (sometimes only 3 to 4 hours use if you happen to leave them in the recorder for a month). The buttons are cool but seem fragile: you'll never be confident while pushing.

MP3 player: since I'm not a expert on computers, I had to ask for especialized help to have the mp3 player to work: it needed a specific Olympus program put inside the DM-1 card. I don't find this a problem: what is a problem is the fact that nowhere in the instructions such requirement was mentioned. Playing games, are we?

The sound? Not all that pleasant, noisy and sometimes "metalic".

I always relied on Olympus for my dictation/recording needs but this product is a non buy. There is better at half the price (at least).

4-0 out of 5 stars MP3 Playback Compatibility For Mac OS Fix
I would have given it five stars but they dissed Apple by not providing MP3 compatibility. There is an MP3 driver that get's installed by the PC only, Music Match.

I've done a lot of searching for freeware to come up with a fix for this. You can use Kilometre. I have a packet with directions for download but the review guidelines prevent me from posting a url for downloading. If you know of a really popular posting forum where I could put this, let me know. Thanks ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent choice
I'm not going to waste space debating this vs. Ipod, etc. Instead, I'll tell you that I've been using this player for about 5 months and enjoy it very much.Pros: small size, don't need to take the whole unit out of your pocket/bag to change stuff, intuitive and easy to use controls once you get used to them, lots of extras (FM radio, voice recording, radio recording, supports Ogg Vorbis and others), frequent firmware updates (the company cares about the users of their product), good price. Cons: some people may not like the extra wire that's needed for the screen, not supported by online music stores (that last one is a biggy if you plan on buying music online- I still buy CD's and then rip them (using CDex into Ogg) and put it on this). Even though there are a few other companies that have bested this one (barely) in terms of size and battery life since it's release, I still think this player has the most to offer for its price than any other on the market. Don't be scared off by the lack of the screen on the main unit; once you use it, you really wouldn't want it any other way. Unfortunately, Amazon doesn't seem to be offering it for $259 w/o the cradle anymore (the cradle is redundant to the small adapter it comes with which is much more travel friendly, but some people like it and at $289, it's still a great deal).

1-0 out of 5 stars Wish it would have worked
I have Windows XP and I use the USB port for many devices (digi camera, printer, other audio device). This MP3 Player is advertised as XP compatable. It comes with a dedicated USB cable, and an explorer type program "Jetshell". I never could get XP or its own program "Jetshell" to recognize the device. I exchanged the MP3 player for a another new one thinking the one I had was defective. I had the same problem with the new one. I spent a lot of time with customer/tech support to no avail. (I noticed on their support forum other customers with the same problem, but no solution offered) I finally gave up and returned the unit. Too bad, it was a small, compact and attractive device. Wished it would have functioned.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best MP3 players
I have been reviewing the market for a multi-functional MP3 player, which could store most of my music collection. Being a student I also wanted a voice recorder that could record my class lectures. For the price and quality iAudio definitely beats everything out there. The FM radio has excellent reception, and the variable bit rate voice recorder is very beneficial. I was tired of waiting for Apple to include these functionalities in their IPOD, and when I came across the IAudio, I absolutely fell in love with it. This is a great product and is highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't be an IPod sheep
I was torn between the IRiver, IPod and the IAudio. The IRiver was about to go out of production and was just a bit too big so no thanks. I read sooo many reviews and came to one simple conclusion. People who buy the IPods are sheeps - Baaaah! Loads of people slated this product who hadn't even used it and they all seemed to be IPod owners - Heeelllloooo! I admit the IPod looks cool but that's about it - For the record I think the IAudio looks better!

I purchased the IAudio M3 and haven't looked back. With a pair of decent Sony headphones the sound quility is quite amazing! You get all the equipment in the box including 2 docking units, remote control and carry case. It is plug and play on any PC with Win ME plus so no need for drivers - simply drag and drop the MP3's (or any other files). Also records and has a radio....need I go on?

Don't be duped into an IPod just cos everyone else has!

Only small downfall is no screen on main unit - a very small issue.

5-0 out of 5 stars appreciated by an ex ipod user
If you are a person that is not technically inclined and is incapable of reading a manual I might recommend the iPod. However, taking the minutely more confusing path pays off exponentially. The features offered by the m3 are far more powerful and useful than those of the iPod.

Before buying the unit you might want to get familiar with possible problems, resolutions and features over at iaudio.com.

A friend of mine uses the iRiver. The most significant difference I can find between them is the fact that the iAudio has no primary screen on the unit and looks much nicer. I am quite happy having made the change to a unit that is not a cliche status symbol (as is the iPod); the iAudio M3 is cool on its own merits not because "everybody else is doing it".

One quick reminder: update the firmware straight out of the box (if this sounds hard, don't worry; it's not) ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Mp3 Player
The iAudio really out did everyone with this mp3 player. It's small, compact, and lightweight. It weights practically nothing. There are a gazillion features this wonderful mechine has, including a FM tuner, a Voice Recording and a line-in recording. This is useful because if you want to hear something new instead of your music you can listen to the radio, and it is easy to even record the music from the radio to the mp3 player if you like the song. Have a memo and no pen? just record what you have to say in hifi quality on your mp3 player, and it takes about three seconds. The Line In is wonderful because you cant record a friends song to your mp3 player from there mp3 or cd player at an equal quality on the go. Plus you can record it at plenty of bitrates and it is all mp3 format, so compatibility is no issue.

But now with the actural playing. The player hase a wonderful array of features to make the music sound beautiful! It has BBE for high definition sound and MACH3BASS for wonderful clarity on lower notes. It has 3D surround sound on it as well that up-mixes the music to a mock surround sound, and it does feel like it is surrounding you. And the most wonderful thing is that it has a mp3 enhance to help bring out some of the music from compression. These things make the sound feel like it it coming from th e studio as you are listening. Litterally everything with the mp3 player is customizable, and very efficient. With the long 15 hour batter life, which i got over 20 hours out of, is marvelous, and hardly any other player out there has such amazing features like this.

The External screen is sweet. It may be small, but it has all the information on it and with the controls on it which I find very easy to use. You can't go wrong. There IS a learning curve to the thing, but it is about only ten to fifteen minutes. I clip it to the inside fo my jacket and leave the main unit in my pocket, so I don't risk breaking it and if you break the screen all it costs is 20 dollars, instead of like $90 that Apple charged me for my iPod. Yes I had an iPod, and this is simply better, not counting the fact that they are the same price. But comparing this to the iPod is an insult to the M3, so i won't do it. Go with the iAudio, and I guarantee you wont regret it. Firmware updates come very often from cowon, and keep the player at a marvelous condition for a long time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Insane MP3 Player
I don't even think they have a word for how awesome this player is.35 hour battery is why I purchased it.I had some concerns about the filesystem, boot times, display, comfort of the remote, GUI...

Everything is solid. It boots in about 4 seconds with a full player, the filesystem is a "WYSIWYG" sorta thing.Just put a directory in and its subfolders and everything will be mirrored once the player starts. There is no ID3 tagging for the filesystem, which I think greatly increases the boot time.

The remote is awesome.10 minutes with it and I felt a thousand times more receptive to using it then just a standalone player.Wow.. how do you describe something like this.I think its the best purchase I have ever made in my entire life. Everything is supereasy to navigate thanks to not 1 but 2 job wheels which help you get around.Navigating with one hand is a cinch, as you would imagine.

The fileformats this thing supports are insane.Plus being able to play .m3u's is big plus. All in all, this IS I think the first of the ipod killers. All that crap about Rio, Sony, Dell, iRiver, and Creative beings the "ones" just never happened. People got hyped before the products came out and everyone was disapointed.

Thank god I never bought an ipod. Did I mention this is smaller than the ipod?Did I mention it runs for almost 3.5 times longer than the ipod before needing a recharge?

Get one. Its worth the money.Stop messing with those brands I listed above. They DO NOT UNDERSTAND. I have owned products by Rio and Creative, both were HORRID.I read reviews that the Iriver has a horrible boot time and that the Dell is just a joke.Save up and buy a quality product.

5-0 out of 5 stars an amazing, well engineered device
This is probably the best consumer electronic item I've ever purchased. Essentially all of the best features of the iPod and iRiver are incorporated into the iAudio.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great MP3 player with few inconveniences...
I've had the player for a few months.I was planning on purchasing the ipod, but the poor battery life and the lack of additional features (such as FM radio and in voice recording) steered me away from the product.Instead I opted for the M3L which has a 35 hour battery life on a one time charge (compared to the 12 - really 8 hour battery life of the ipod).I'm not really a high tech person, but in case I ever did become one, I wanted to have the player that had the most features.
The only negative complain I have of the item is it having no screen on the unit itself. It can be a pain using the remote (it's tiny) and the wires really tend to get in the way.To avoid this I create my own playlist ahead of time and scrap the remote.Anyway, for the specs this is good, but for ease of use and portability, other players would probably beat this one out.
Also the sound is AMAZING on this player. If I were you guys I'd wait until next year when Iaudio will release an M3 with a screen on the main unit.I really should've waited for that.Anyway, hope my review helps!

5-0 out of 5 stars This machine puts the iPod to SHAME
This machine is wonderful.
Vs. the ipod, its much more friendly
It has an inline mic
also an FM tuner, which you can record from.
Its a great gadget, much better than the iPod. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Cheap, but not worth the money.
I have had many problems with this machine. It crashes all the time, it looses entire albums, and the battery is very unreliable.I have had to reload my entire music collection three times in 6 months, and it is long process to do it each time because it no requires you to use their very poorly designed program. It is an inexpessive devise, but I recommend spending a bit more for a better item.It will be worth the $$.

2-0 out of 5 stars Cheap, but definitely not for everyone
The JukeJam (40 GB) is still available on eBay and Amazon merchants, and it's unbelievably cheap for the features. But you're buying into something that has a lot of design flaws.

DO buy it if what you really want is a big portable USB drive for backing up your computer. Its disk size and battery life are remarkably good, and you can back up your whole computer and most of your record collection onto the thing.Of course, it's also an MP3 player -- but it's at best adequate for that.

DON'T buy it if what you really want is an iPod.The software (both that runs on your computer and on the player itself) is not well thought out and is a real pain in the neck if you have more than a few hundred songs (and with that capacity, who woulnd't?).As mentioned elsewhere, playlists and song management are not only hard to use but usually have to be re-entered *by hand.*Plus, there are dozens of bugs that make the JukeJam completely unusable for listening to audio books. For example, you can't fast forward or rewind if the "track" is more than 30 minutes long, and for some MP3 formats you can't fast forward or rewind at all.Other times, the player just gets confused and the controls freeze up, or it just shuts down.Tech support -- yeah, right. The software is written in China, and the few guys who work on it here aren't responsive.

Finally, the FM radio and recording capabilities work only in theory. It is a usable stereo tuner, but it can only pick up incredibly strong signals.I have two JukeJams, and they each can pick up maybe 3 stations...where a car radio or boom box can pick up 30.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't buy this!!!
I have had two of these. One quit after only 3 weeks, the other never worked at all.My experience with the unit that worked was very dissapointing:

You cannot import playlists, you have to create them using clunky software included with the player or on the player itself. This becomes much more difficult with large numbers of mp3's.You also must select and load mp3's with the software one by one.The unit's database crashes frequently and must be rebuilt using the software, this destroys all playlists. The only media player that supports it is "Musicmatch Jukebox" and only the version included with the player, (It's not much better as an interface than the other software included with the player).

This is a discontinued unit which is being sold off by third party resellers under several different names, there is almost no tech support available except from other owners.

If you buy one of these you will soon be wishing you hadn't wasted your money. The Creative Labs Zen Extra can be purchased for under 200 dollars, It's well worth it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Quick review
This is not a bad mp3 at all and is definetly a bang for the buck. Compared to other mp3's, it is cheap with more features and sound quality is not compromised either. But beware because it's not for everybody. There are pros, cons, and some neutralities.

Pros:
1-It is cheap with a huge storage space. I've got the 40gb model and basically, I can store songs without ever deleting any of them. But that's just me, others may need more space than I do.
2-It is loaded with features that most other mp3's don't offer, like radio, recording radio and voices, etc. I haven't used all of the features and don't really plan to, so I just look at it as extra perks of the player.
3-Sound quality is not bad at all. Basically, if the mp3 file you download is good, then you will hear good sound quality from the player. Therefore, the sound quality is really as good as the file and can't be judged by the player.
4-The software is simple as can be. I had more trouble plugging in the USB cable(because the port is in the back of my computer) than I did installing and using the program. But my experiences are through Microsoft Windows and therefore I don't know how easy it is to use through Linux or other applications. But I'm sure it can't be that hard.
5-Even though the player has an overwhelming amount of choices on the main menu, it is still very easy to navigate through. Once you get used to navigating through them, it really shouldn't be a problem.

Cons:
1-The size of this player is bigger than most. It is bigger than the CreativeLabs Zen and much bigger than the Ipod. This could be a serious issue for some. But the player is basically handheld for an average adult hand. The height and width aren't even all that bad, but the depth of it is. It is very bulky.
2-The joystick is pretty sensitive and will mess with your playlist if you stick it in your back pocket.
3-All of the plugs are located on the side of the player and not on the top. That means the headphones plug in from the side and not from the top.
4-The main con for this player is its' durability. If you are seriously considering this mp3 player, take in mind that you can't roughhouse it. It is not like other mp3's because when you load a song, you can actually hear it loading. What I mean is that inside the player is an actual harddrive and basically, dropping it would be like dropping a laptop to put it in lamens terms.
5-The battery is not changeable. Although it is rechargeable, you don't have the convenience of changing the battery in the middle of the street if it dies.

Neutralities:
1-The headphones that come with it aren't the best but are better than what I've read on some of the reviews. For me, I can bear with the sound quality of the headphones but others may want to buy better ones.
2-The battery life isn't too bad although it isn't great either. But it lasts a good deal of time when fully recharged. My guess would be that it would last around 2 or more hours of nonstop playing.
3-The radio is not very impressive. I have to admit that in some areas, it comes out as good as a car radio would, but for the most part(like in some areas of the suburbs) it has a lot of static and is hard to hear the actual radio.

So, basically my recommendation is this. If your somebody that doesn't plan to treat this player like a 10 year old would and you are more inclined to technicalities and features over looks, then this is a great deal for you. But, if you want something that's trendy and have some more money to spend, maybe you should go for some of the more popular one's. This unit is definetly not a trend setter and is more for those who seek value over trend.

4-0 out of 5 stars Polaroid 40GB Jukebox Jam
WOAH!!! This mp3 player is pretty sweet, 40 gigs of memory, fm radio + radio recorder, voice recorder, and recording from line in, (that means that you can plug your old cd player, or whatever in to the Juke Jam using a special cord, found at best buy, and you can record songs to your Juke Jam while they play on your device, but the song quality isn't very good) But this player does have a downside too, a very large one. It is very large, I can barely fit my hand around it, width-wise, The only way that you could possibly fit this player in your pocket is if your pockets are absolutely HUGE. Compared to a regular ipod, the juke jam is about 2 1/2 to 3 times the size, yeah, its big, but it weighs about the same as an ipod. Another downside is that the fm radio is crap, the only way you could get any signal is if you were 10 feet away from where the radio station was brodcasting. This thing has a voice recorder, its cool, but in order to be able to hear anything when you play back what you recorded, YOU HAVE TO SCREAM INTO THE TINY HOLE THAT RECORDS YOUR VOICE, and if you were wondering where it is, it is located in the bottom right corner just onto the white plastic, it looks like a tiny speck, but its a voice recorder.Ok, now I'm going to tell you how to get music onto the thing, if you are having a hard time installing the program, then read the instruction manual, STEP BY STEP. and yeah, I'm to tired to write anymore. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars I STAKE MY REPUTATION ON THIS PLAYER!NUMBER 1 PLAYER!
I will try to give the best explanation of why this device should be chosen over every other player out there.I am 19 years old (using my mom's Amazon S/N to write this review for you all) and in college so I need something I can commute with and listen to all my CD's.I have had an mp3 player ever since the first Nomad came out from the CreativeLabs.I use to care about the size of the unit, but after the experience I have had, I much rather sacrafice size for quality.I started with a Nomad Jukebox 3 which was not only the heaviest and largest mp3 player out there (but back then only 1 of 3 players on the market), but it was one of the BEST SOUNDING mp3 players I ever witnessed. Not only was the quality superb, but the features were so much more than others had to offer.I am teched out in my room from PDA's to mp3's so I love to search for the best and let everyone else know how good a product is.I went from the nomad jukebox 3, to the rio karma, to the ipod, then iriver H300, then iriver H320(color screen), Creative touch, and finally the Creative Zen Xtra 40gb.

I will now compare all of these and show the true differences:
Jukebox 3: Pros: 98dB noise cancelling ratio, fm radio and remote control option, 2 Line out's, Optical Line in, firewire, USB 1.1, and an assortment of features like: find a song, EAX advanced, green and blue backlight, 4 channel speaker, profile. You can have up to 2 batteries.Cons: Huge, heavy, bulky, and small battery unless u add another.Small display.
RioKarma: Pros: Smaller, very easy to use, Rio DJ, clock, scroll wheel, Left hand and Right hand inversion settings.Cons: quality is above par, but not spectacular like the jukebox 3.Other than that, very well made machine.Battery could be better and it is not replaceable.
ipod: Pros: scroll wheel (heaven), games, design.Honestly...the only two good things.Cons: Battery life is a two thumbs down, quality is not impressive, interface is whack, software is evil, scratches like no other, and other things that I will discuss a little later. No replaceable battery or firmware updates as well.
iriver H300 & H320: Both are identical except the H320 is colored screen.Pros: Gorgeous color display. That alone was super tempting.Built in voice recorder, built in FM radio, size, nice interface, very easy to transfer songs, Sound quality is ok.Cons: Sound quality-lacks bass and treble settings (even with EAX) that help produce that kick in your stereo and headphones. No replaceable battery.
Creative Zen Touch: Pros: Nice size display, great battery life *similar* features to the xtra and jukebox 3 BUT not the same, nice case.Cons: quality was not what I expected from a Creative product (just under par from the jukebox 3 but still sounded better than the iriver), the touch pad is SO SO SO annoying...trying to go down by one selection is tough, the EAX is half done....the jukebox 3 was loaded, and no replaceable battery.
***The Nomad Zen Xtra*** Pros: THE SAME AS THE JUKEBOX 3 with a smaller, sleeker more attractive design.Cons: under par battery life, but is replaceable so you can purchase another one for $50 and swap it out when the other dies out to give you up to 28 hrs of battery life.

Now I will give you history to show how I arrived to this conclusion:

I started with the Jukebox 3 that I considered it to be SO AMAZING that I couldn't believe the quality and storage this device could produce.Up to this day it goes down in history as the best player made on the market and I sware by it.I truly wished for something smaller since the bulky, heavy machine would be difficult to travel with.I couldn't put it in my pocket so that was annoying for carrying around.I decided to pick up the Rio Karma. This player is much smaller, little fat, but overall solid and a good choice.Unfortunately, this player no longer exists so don't rush out to buy one just yet.I liked it for what it was, but the quality could not compete with the mighty Jukebox 3.If you don't believe the quality of the jukebox 3, go try to find one.The machine will convince you that it is the best....the music sounds better than the CD!Then I purchased the ipod...I will start a new paragraph to make this stand out.

IPOD: By far the worse machine I have purchased.Where to begin....first of all, the device will get a scratch with the slightest touch.Secondly, the software is decent until you learn the evil behind it.So many people buy it from the hype and sleek style, but they lack the hidden knowledge that ipod brilliantly hides. When you connect the ipod to your computer, consider that computer to ipod a one way street. When you send a song over to the ipod, it is not coming back.Ipod strictly protects each and every song from ever returning to that computer....even if it is your own.Another problem is the firmware....it doesn't exist. You have 1 firmware and you are trapped. If a new firmware release comes out, you will need to spend $300 to buy yourself a new player because that is the only way you will have it.The next issue is the battery.Contents in box stink....no case or docking station to cut back the cost.I can't believe how fast it just drained. It sucks the life out of it before you get the chance to say "The battery is dead."Playlists, song deletion, and organization all must be done on the computer. You CANNOT delete a song or create a playlist on an ipod from the device itself.Utterly annoying to say the least.Don't be fooled by the style and glitter. It is a device that puts pain and mental anguish in you that isn't needed from an mp3 player.

Iriver H300 and H320: These were the next two players I invested in. I bought the H320 just because of the color screen since all of the other features were the same from the H300.The device is solid. You get a ton of bang for your buck.I see they have have brand new H10 20gb version which is much smaller that you could take a look at.The H320 has a very powerful voice recorder which is worth the purchase if you need a digital recorder, it has a drag and drop capability, and FM radio. If you want to compare software with the other players, then you're out of luck.....there is none. You just open the Hard Drive folder, open the folder of music you want, and drag it to the Hard Drive folder. That is it.The battery is 16 hrs which is good. With all of this, can't you see why I bought it.It even comes with carrying case and remote control. The problem with the iriver is the quality. It sounds as good as the rio karma, but I sware you can notice a gigantic difference between a creative product and this iriver. If you plug your player into an external source, the iriver has poor bass and treble.Your car sound system or home stereo system will not sound too thrilling. You will think that you paid good money for that Bose sound system and end up wanting to take it back.Trust me...it is the player.I tested the Jukebox 3 with the iriver on the same sound system and the sound quality difference was night and day...completely different. The Creative blew my mind with the power and clarity compared to the iriver.

Now I tried the brand new creative touch. This player supposedly is *97dB* compared to the jukebox 3 *98db* noise cancelling ratio.Believe me...I now know the difference. It sounded better than the iriver, but still worse than the jukebox 3.The touch pad was about as annoying to work with as it gets.It was an attempt to copy ipod and obviously failed. It is hard to navigate without going past your selection. The play button and the others are flimsy and felt like they could fall off.The player as a whole felt VERY solid...like a rock.I felt there was no hope in sight of ever coming close to the Nomad Jukebox 3 and I was dissapointed until I researched this player: The Nomad Zen Xtra.

The Nomad Zen Xtra is not only the best player up to date, but it mimics the success and fantastic quality of the Jukebox 3.Up to now you heard me rave about the Jukebox 3 which had nothing to do with the Zen Xtra until now.Take the name "jukebox 3" and place "Zen Xtra" everywhere in this review. The Zen Xtra not only sounds so great, but it is smaller, sleeker, stylish, and feature packed like the Jukebox 3.However, it cannot play FM radio or voice record and it cannot use a remote control, but that is the smallest price to pay to acheive a dream machine. If you want superb audio quality, a wonderful device, and have your external sound systems sounding like what they were purchased for....then you have just wisely invested in this product.Of all the players I have witnessed and thoroughly tested, this is by far as good as it gets. The bass and treble are fabulous, the device is smaller (not the smallest but u sacrafice quality for size), the buttons are very sturdy, the screen is very big with a nicely sapphire lit screen, jam packed with features without sacraficing others, and a nice interface to work with.

If you ask "What makes this different from any other device?" or "Is it hard to use?", then let me break it down for you.I don't understand what kind of rap this machine has been getting for the software because I found it to be very intuitive and easy to operate. You are given not 1....but 2 different programs to make the process easy to operate. One is an organizer and one is a drag and drop which simply puts the songs on to your device just like I explained with the iriver. The interface on the device is so advanced and loaded with features that up to now beat out all other mp3 players in my opinion. You can find any song by using the A-Z finder. You can choose from MANY Equalizers like the Jukebox 3 offers. The Zen Touch DOES NOT HAVE ALL THESE EQUALIZER SETTINGS....it is a rip off....they skimmed the surface in my opinion. The load up on this player is absolutely shocking......you turn the player on and there is no wait time....it is automatically ready to go.You have a built in playlist where you can set it up extremely easily with any CD or particular song you want.I absolutely love that feature and I sware you can't find anything easier.Just takes getting use to if you are a first timer to the wonderful world of Creative. The profile setting allows you to customize the interface to your liking which is a nice feature. The scroll is very nice.It slightly takes a little getting use to because it speeds up, but trust me...I have seen it all....you will like it once you have this scroll.Another benefit that you don't realize until you have experienced these other players is the fact that when you use that scroll and highlight your selection....you can push in the scroll and it enters your selection. It doesn't sound like much, but you will whip along much faster without using two hands just with that feature. There is a button lock and switch to remove the external battery. That is another fantastic feature that other players lack. The ability to change the battery if it goes bad or you just want to double your life capacity is so worth the money.Other players you are stuck with the battery built inside which is not replaceable.Another interesting fact that you might not consider is that if the player locks up (like the ipod did to me one time), you can just remove the battery and reset it that way.

I think I have said enough.I honestly think this is the best investment money can buy.YOU WILL NOT BE DISSAPOINTED.I have tried the rest, and now I am sticking with the best. This player is solid and the best out there. The irony is that it is MUCH cheaper than other players out there.Amazon is selling it for $224 which is the best I have seen online and it is TRULY amazing that for $224, you can get ***40gb*** of storage. All $300 players out there offer 20gb which is half the size and aren't even good anyway.Creative is trying to pull the demand with a high quality product for an amazing price. You can't beat a deal like that....especially when you see those small 4,5,6gb players for $200.....this is $24 bucks more for 10X the size.

I believe in this product so much that you can e-mail me at pharmachesst@netscape.net for any reason whether with questions or concerns. If you need help with the software, I have been through it all lol so I know how to get it working. In no way am I a representative for Creative....I just love this product so much and when I stand by my technology....I mean it...I just don't say it to waste my breathe and time.Just an avg. man trying to go through college like everyone else....but why go through what I did....when I know this is the choice! You will love the player.I promise :).
~Eddie

FYI: All songs downloaded on the mp3 players were at a good quality of 192kbps MP3 format and all were tested with the same $29.99 Sony MDR-A35 headphones and Bose sound system in my car.I have 18gb's of music on this player which is equivalent to about 190 CD's and I have 15gb of storage left. The Mp3 player only gives you 38.1GB of storage which should not be suprising since all mp3 players are like that because they require HD space for the interface.I hope this review helps you a lot!

5-0 out of 5 stars contagious--in a good way
I bought one in December and liked it so much, my boss bought one in January. My best friend then bought one in February. And I must say, we've all loved it.
I have 6,100 mp3s on it so far, and listen on the 2-mile walk to and from work. It's also fabulous for weekends out of town when you don't want to pack a bunch of CDs. It works wonderfully with Windows Media 10, and I also have the redchair SW ($25--handy for organizing lots of mp3s, but really not helpful for when you're doing the initial rip/sync process). iTunes doesn't recognize the Nomad, so when I download in iTunes I just burn a CD, rip into WinMedia, and sync to the Nomad from there (and then I've got a CD for at home anyway).
One thing that bugged my boss and friend was the lack of a "stop" button, but for that all you do is pause, then press either the "skip forward" or "skip backward" button, and it's stopped (not just paused). Other reviewers had mentioned a lack of "random" play mode, but there are a couple options: in the menu there is "play any track," which pulls up the ENTIRE music library, shuffled; you can also select whatever music you want and in "play mode" menu select "shuffle."
Really, I have had absolutely no problems or complaints with mine. Once, early on, it froze up on me, so I just used my earring post to hit the "reset" button. I accidentally dropped it on my kitchen floor once, but it was totally fine. For me, this has been like the Volvo of audio electronics--take care of it, it'll take care of you. It's been a fantastic investment, I've totally enjoyed it, and I completely recommend it.
Enjoy!

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best purchases I've ever made...
In shopping for a digital music player, I wasn't interested in style, or impressing people with my hip new electronic toy. I was interested in storage space, sound quality, battery life, and price. The 40 GB Nomad Zen Xtra more than delivered on all of these.

I take this player to work and it gives me 8-10 hours every day, with battery life to spare. Then when I'm at home I can plug it into it's charger and still listen to it while the battery charges back up.

The software was easy to install for me, and I enjoy the relative ease at which I can rip and transfer songs from any source, be it Napster, itunes, Yahoo, P2P, or my own CDs. The Creative Mediasource software gives you the freedom to create your own playlists, an sort your music library in virtually whatever way you choose.

This player is also durable. I've dropped it several times and it's kept on ticking. As long as you keep it in it's sturdy carry case and don't go skateboarding with it, it should work fine. Treat it like a piece of electronics and not a cheap walkman.

On the negative side, the earbuds that are included with the Zen Xtra are trash. Anyone who cares anything about sound quality will need to invest at least another 40-50 dollars in a decent set of earphones/buds. This applies to just about all digital music players as well. I also have an issue to where I get static/snow in my right earphone from time to time. This is a noted problem with this series of Nomads and it happens very infrequently to me, not enough to take away from my overall satisfaction with the product.

I enjoy this player so much I listen to it more than my stereo at home due to the fact that it gives me the freedom to listen to my collection of 3500+ songs at virtually the touch of a button, and the 40 GB drive means I haven't even used up half of the memory on this thing, leaving me a large ceiling to expand my collection and fit it all on here.

And the absurd thing is that I got this 40GB Nomad at about the same price I would have paid for a 4 gb ipod mini. 10 times the space for about the same price? So I'm not hip, I'll take the extra 36 GBs and like the trade just fine.

5-0 out of 5 stars I *heart* my Creative Labs Nomad Zen Xtra
I LOVE my 40GB mp3 player. It rocks my world. And it helps keep my sanity. I plug it into my car, I listen to it when I walk, when I'm at home, and in some of my classes that let me.I have a huge music collection and I don't even have a quarter downloaded to it. My only problem is that it got stolen from my backpack while in school. So now my sanity is leaving. I am so upset. So now I have to look for a new one, with my limited student income and I am going off to college in August.
P.S.I hate iPods;)

4-0 out of 5 stars Overall great MP3 player
I bought this to play in my car and listen to while I go on my walks. \
I have had it for 5 months now with absolutely no problems. It has frozen up a couple of times, but the reset button takes care of it and does not effect the memory.
It has superb sound quality and is very user friendly. I don't think I will ever fit all of my music on it. It transfers songs super fast.
My only issue is the size. It is bulky to take on walks or to exercise with. But for the price and the storage capacity, I can't complain too much.
I like the creative labs products so much, I am buying a smaller MP3 player (MuVo2 512MB off of eBay stores creative.labs at a great price!!!) for exercising with. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Stylish junk
This is a very compact unit, using only a single AAA battery for power, with a built-in USB connection for downloading music.Unfortunately, that's where the compliments end.

I've found this device to be unreliable and generaly flakey. Some music files cause playback to simply freeze, requiring a "reboot" (unplug the battery) to continue.Often the unit will simply stop playing "for no reason".The tiny amount of power available from the single battery is insufficient to produce any kind of volume, even on very efficient headphones.Operating at higher volume levels (more than 3/4 of the way up) results in the unit shutting down after a few minutes.Even the most efficient external speakers elicit the same result.I would expect that all of the other MuVo TX family members are just as flakey, but this is the only one I've tried.I wouldn't recommend this unit or any of it's siblings to anyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to use
I bought this before a deployment while in the Army and I loved it.No wires to mess with while downloading music and it can be add to almost any computer as a generic storage or jump drive.Very light weight, very compact, and very easy to use.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply. Great.
I got this as a present and it is fantastic, it can even handle my DRM protected online purchased music and the earphones are really THAT great ;)

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome!
I love the MuVo TX.I've read many reviews about it on many different websites, such as amazon, bizrate, and epinions before purchasing it, and I'm glad that I did.The only problem I had pertained to the defective earphones.I have no idea whether or not they were meant to be that way, but the right earphone stretches quite a bit further than the left one.Other that that, the MuVo TX rocks.I jog just about everyday, and it stores me enough music to last a few miles.I highly recommened it.

Amazon.com Product Description

The amazingly small, ultra-slim, and lightweight Panasonic SVAV50 is ready to capture your favorite moments in digital video and still photos wherever you roam. You can also use the SVAV50 as a digital audio player, voice recorder, and image viewer through your TV (using the included cradle). The SVAV50 is so small because it uses no tape--all video, images, and audio are stored on a tiny Secure Digital (SD) memory card. It also features 2-megapixel digital still resolution, 2-inch flip-and-twist LCD for reviewing your video and photos, and 2.5x digital zoom. This model (SVAV50S) comes in silver, but the SVAV50 is also available in blue (SVAV50A).

Video and Still Optics
Using the MPEG4 format, the SVAV25 saves video to Secure Digital (SD) and MultiMedia (MMC) memory cards (an 8 MB SD card is included). With the small size of MPEG4 files--featuring resolution modes of either 320 x 240 or 176 x 144--you can easily post video to your Web site or send files to friends and family via e-mail.

The D-snap cradle is equipped with an A/V terminal that makes it easy to connect to a TV or VCR and record TV programs onto an SD card. Using the SVAV50 for playback, you can watch the news, a movie, or other programs just about anywhere.

The following shows the approximate amount of continuous video that can be recorded on several sizes of SD memory card (including larger optional cards):

  • Super Fine (320 x 240, 1 Mbps): 0.9 minutes (included 8 MB card), 7 minutes (64 MB card), 15 minutes (128 MB card)
  • Fine (320 x 240, 420 Kbps): 2 minutes (included 8 MB card), 17 minutes (64 MB card), 35 minutes (128 MB card)
  • Normal (176 x 144, 300 Kbps): 2.5 minutes (included 8 MB card), 25 minutes (64 MB card), 50 minutes (128 MB card)
  • Economy (176 x 144, 100 Kbps): 8 minutes (included 8 MB card), 70 minutes (64 MB card), 150 minutes (128 MB card)

The SVAV50 has a 1/3.2-inch CCD for a 2-megapixel resolution--capturing enough image data for print enlargements up to 8 x 10 inches. It features1600 x 1200 (2 MP), 1280 x 960 (1 MP), and 640 x 480 (VGA--great for sending in e-mail) resolution modes. You can zoom in on subjects using the 2.5x digital zoom.

Audio
In addition to its motion and still image capability, the SVAV50 can also be used as a digital audio player--just slip in an SD card loaded with tunes and listen via the included earphones. It's compatible with MP3 and AAC audio files. And with the built-in microphone (monaural), you can easily record voice memos, lectures, interviews, and reminders to the SD card.

1-0 out of 5 stars Holy Carpe Diem!
i bought this 5 days ago and the device may "work" but the cradle doesn't. After installing the USB drivers a dozen times and being put on hold by three differnt companies, i have had it. I bought this because i need a mp3 player and a digital camera. Silly me, I thought that companies want my business. Panasonic tech support is a joke. Sony has the best music. Microsoft can megabyte me. I am returning this device for the cheaper Palm zire 72. Which uses the same memory type.

4-0 out of 5 stars One Nifty Little Gadget
This is a very cool gadget, but it has a very specific target audience - people who need a camera and a Dictaphone with them at all times. If that's not you, consider a Palm Zire 71, or maybe a camera phone.

Unlike many other combination devices, the D-Snap 50 doesn't try to do too much, just a few things fairly well. The MP3 player is as good as any other card-based unit, the voice recorder is on par with the most expensive Sony stand-alones, and the digital camera is good enough for small jobs and web work... but until you get used to using it, you'll think you need to cut off your index finger to take a decent picture. Also, I haven't yet decided whether including an 8 MB memory card with the unit was meant as an insult or a joke.

Most of the negatives associated with the D-Snap 50 can be cured with three things: patience, practice, and an extraordinarily large SD memory card. After you've taught yourself how to hold it, and jacked up all the settings to acceptable quality, you will wonder how you ever did without it. As for durability, we'll have to wait and see, but I trust the brand. Three and one-half stars.

4-0 out of 5 stars Ultimate Versatility - but know what you are getting!
I travel frequently and write as a hobby, and I have often wished I had camera or camcorder with me to capture an interesting scene to use in my writing.I normally carry a digital voice recorder, but usually do not have the ability to photograph because cameras are generally too bulky for everyday use.I therefore purchased this gadget in an effort to give me an `all in one' recorder I could use to capture voice notes, still images and short movies. Here's what I found:

The Good:

- Small!Yet it has a good, solid weight to it.
- Easy-to-learn controls.I was using the gadget's full functionality within minutes, and didn't have to slog through the manual to learn each mode.Once I learned how to use one mode, the others were fairly intuitive.
- Versatility - I was able to hook the camcorder up to my DVD player and record a movie in MPEG-4 format for later watching.I then reversed the cables and played the same movie, outputting to my television.I took a few pictures, then made some voice memos, and the quality of the memos was better than on my old digital recorder.Very cool!

The Bad:

- The camcorder works well only when under strong light conditions. It lowers the shutter speed when it has insufficient light (and `insufficient' here includes any indoor shooting), which means dropped frames and dark colors. There is a mode to compensate somewhat for low light, but this only brightens the images without speeding frame rate.
- I knew this going in, so I don't really think of this as a `bad', but you may not know: MPEG-4 is NOT movie-quality!The best you can do on this device is 320x240 - half the normal resolution of your TV screen, which means half as good as your normal camcorder.Plus, it's compressed, which means some quality is lost. The movies this device makes are for posting on Websites, not sending copies to Grandma.
- The camera also does not work well indoors. It has an automatic flash, but the flash is somewhat underpowered and does not illuminate objects more than a few feet in front of the camera.
- Only 2.5 digital zoom on the camera. No optical zoom. This is, effectively, a simple point and click camera.
- Listening to the most recently recorded voice memo requires scrolling with the track ball, unlike normal voice recorders which allow you to listen to your most recent memo with ease - this is important, as you will often want to ensure you actually captured what you were saying.
- Short battery life - about an hour of recording. The battery is quite slim, so this is to be expected. However, an hour is significantly less than most one-use objects.
- No protective case!A leather holder is a must for this device.Instead, all you get is a neck strap (good, though it's almost too heavy for wearing around the neck) and a grey felt bag which could protect from scratches, but not dropping.Who the heck is going to carry this in a felt bag?It needs to be worn on the waist, like a cell phone.

The Ugly:

- It's very easy to place your finger over the lens when taking pictures.Panasonic tried to compensate for this by placing several small nubs on the front of the device so you could, by feel, know where to hold the camera. However, they're not enough, and Panasonic's `fix' is a hard plastic bubble you're supposed to peel and stick to the front of the camera to prevent your finger from sliding up.Yes, that's right - instead of building a bump into the camera's case, you the consumer have to gum a piece of hard plastic to it.In the software industry, we call this a `hack.'
- The `Menu' button, which you will be using frequently, is difficult to push. It's tiny, and because of the camera's shape is difficult to push without grasping the camera with both hands. This is a device that wants to be used only with one hand.
- I'm concerned about durability. While most of the parts feel solid and durable, two spots feel like they are asking to break. One is a small roller ball that you use to traverse the menus; it's tiny and light, and if it goes, there's no way the gadget will work without professional service. The second is the plastic catch that keeps the LED screen in place when the camera is open.Since it's possible to force the camera to close without pushing in the latch, I can see this part wearing out quickly and preventing the LED from locking open.

Summary: Despite my grips, the SV-AV50 is definitely a keeper. It an excellent emergency memory preserver/party toy.It is well-engineered with a few minor flaws. It is NOT a camcorder replacement and NOT a digital camera replacement; if you buy expecting either of these you'll be mightily disappointed.4/5 stars, but know what you are getting!

3-0 out of 5 stars Total Gadget
I want to love this gadget, but I can not. It tries to do too much, and ends up doing too little.

PROS:
- Super Small
- Large LCD
- Excellent Prodcut Design
- Many "Features"

CONS:
- You're finger easily gets in the way of the lens(1 in 3 shots are finger shots)
- The digital photos are VERY grainy in ALL light conditions (I would not even post the photos to my web site)
- No "Red Eye Reduction"
- The video quality is medium, definitel not a camcorder replacement
- Audio files need to be translated to some "native" format, using included software... no drag and drop here!

I will most likely return it, despite my desire to like all that it offers and how cool it looks. It just not deliver quality on the images and video. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars love it!
I bought the Nomad Muvo NX 256 over one year ago, and I loved it so much that I am upgrading to a TX 512.

I love the fact that the USB connector is built right in. That was the biggest factor that influenced my decision to buy this unit. No cables to carry around (or lose), just plug it in and go. If I am at a friend's house, and they have a song I want, I can just plug into their computer and take it! It is SO EASY! You use it as you would any other removable drive.

Don't bother with the Creative software, it sucks. Just drag your music over and go. The "problem" of playing alphabetically can be overcome by putting numbers in front of music filenames, I already do this with all my CDs.

The headphones that it comes with are not great. I use Sony's MDR-ED21LP headphones, which cost about $20 (buy them online, I can almost never find them in stores), and the sound is great.

The unit is very durable, I dropped it many, many times and it survived with no problem. Battery life is pretty good, but if I am going on a trip or planning a long day at the beach I usually bring an extra AAA along, just in case.

One word of caution: I upgraded the firmware a few months ago, and it slowly began to crap out on me after that. I would have to push the power button twice to make it turn on, and it would not always be recognized by my computer. It was fine until I upgraded the firmware... So if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Overall, I love the Muvo NX 256, however I would probably recommend the TX series to a new buyer, since TX has USB 2.0 and NX has USB 1.1.

2-0 out of 5 stars worked well while it worked
I thought this was the best thing ever. I loved the capabilities to carry data at the same time as music. I loved being able to run with it (with no skipping or problems at all) and it was easy to transfer.
I don't like how the songs play in alphabetical order. and MOST OF ALL- i hate the fact that they only have a 90 day warranty! Mine stopped being recognized by computers a month ago, and creative labs (terrible cust. service by the way) is telling me i have to pay 40 bucks to get it fixed. I really have a hard time trusting in these products when creative labs themselves can't trust the products they make enough to give them at least a 1 yr warranty. I suggest not taking the risk on this one... and just spend a bit more money and get something w/a better warranty and something that's better -- Ipod.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Product
I really like my MP3 player, it is small and comes with an arm band so I can work-out with it.My only complaint is that the battery compartment is a bit flimsy and the cover comes off all the time.

5-0 out of 5 stars PERFECT MP3 PLAYER
This little thing is awesome.Basically, it is a Walkman, but about the size of cigarette lighter. It holds approximately 70 songs.I'm using it for running.First thing I did was ditch the ear-buds that came with it.Those things will never stay in while you're running. My old Walkman headset fit in the jack.Runs off 1 AAA battery.I went to this because it was less than $100 and I've been reading all kinds of horror stories about getting the I-Pod battery changed by mailing it in.Not worth the effort.

The Nomad 256 fits easily into the USB port of your computer, though some computers will not allow you to slid the oversized flash drive in because the plastic case blocks it from seating property.Shove it in the back and you should have no trouble.

Holds a lot of music and its easy to click through songs you don't want to listen to.If you make a mistake in typing in info it will carry over to the Nomad and you have to delete and rename the file.Editing won't do it, for some reason. You'll love this thing.Cheap and easy to use.I'm going to buy one for my wife.

3-0 out of 5 stars overpriced for a lack of features.
while creative has a hit on their hands with their latest Muvo solid-state MP3 line, there is absolutely NO reason to choose the Muvo NX 256MB player over the Muvo TX FM 256MB player.

The NX is more expensive, utilizes USB 1.1 to transfer files and lacks a radio/radio recording.

The TX FM is CHEAPER for the same memory size/usb stick configuration, utilizes USB 2.0 for MUCH faster speeds AND HAS FM RADIO INCLUDED AS WELL. seriously, the NX right now is a ripoff until the price drops the TX to match.

1-0 out of 5 stars Nothing but problems...
I bought this player in January, and have been able to use it less than 10 times.I have had to fix problems everytime I try to put new songs on.I have had to send it back twice--for the same problem! The second time Samsung said they would send me a new player--a week later I was sent my old one that they said they couldn't fix.Now when I call to find out what is going on, customer service says sorry, nothing we can do...be warned if you buy this player, you may not actually get to use it, nor is Samsung very helpful.

4-0 out of 5 stars Samsung YH-820
I have this gear for more than two months since March/2005 and I am really amazed by its good quality of sounds when comparing with other no-name flash MP3 players. Its deep rich bass really give me lots of good listening pleasure.

But this gear is not perfect and be aware the following:

1. YH-820MS will only display either English and Korean characters, nothing else.If U look other foreign characters, this gear is not the one.
2. Battery time is not very good.Full bettery charge will last up to 5-6 hours. Each full charge takes close to 3.5 hours.
3. It takes close to 40 seconds to boot to have sound out
4. 2 out 10 times, booting will hang and requires hardware reset
5. It works with either Naspeter or MS's media player Version 10 only. Do not expect to drag the MP3 songs or music folder into this gear. It requires SYNC thru MS's media player and "SYNC" 1500 songs into this gear requires lots of time.

Other than these concerns, I really enjoy this gear.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Player
I posted a review before about how my player began messing up and deleting all of my songs. I exchanged it for a new one, and I've determined that the original messed up because I did not handle it correctly and did things like unplug it without safely disconnecting.

My new one works great. It does take forever to load all of your music, but that probably doesn't vary much from player to player. I have no complaints about my new player, as it has done everything I expected it to and has not malfunctioned at all.

2-0 out of 5 stars Buy this if you want to take it to the shop...
I have had this since December. I agree the player is cool and has good features such as the ability to record from the radio but if it breakes down what is the point? I am now having to bring in my player for the SECOND time for servicing. Not a big deal unless you want to wait a whole month for the process and if you don't have all of your music backed up... My suggestion, go with something that has been proven to work that also has good features, not this player.

4-0 out of 5 stars Samsung has more features, better price than overated IPod
It says it all in the title: fm tuner, line in / voice recording, recording directly from radio, etc. This has many of the features that the IPod is lacking.I picked one of these up last week from Office Depot for $99 after mail in rebate. What a steal!Plus it comes with a case, line in plug, cradle charger, and more.
***Do not use the Napster software. That is why I gave it 4 stars instead of 5.Stick with Windows Media Player 10.Use the sync option.Very easy and very fast transfering WMAs.It seemed to take a little while to transfer some of my mp3s.It said it had to convert the files. When you rip the files off your cds, transfer them to WMA files.
Besides that, this player is great.Good job Samsung! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars I HATE ipods
My friend had an ipod.It broke randomly on the bus 3 days after the warrenty expired. She paid for it herself and was very upset so really, what i'm saying is ipod is over-rated, over-priced and not made out for long-term use.

5-0 out of 5 stars great item
both me and one of my family members hav ipods i have the 40 my son has the 20, both by hp, great support by hp, and a gra=eat by overall. I got a hp ipod for my birthday and got my son an hp 20 because of the support. both my son and I think if you have a big(over 5,000 songs)music library get a 40 if you have a smaller library get a 20 if you just want an ipod for the gym or if your a young child get a shuffle. but no matter what minis cost to much and arent worth it.

4-0 out of 5 stars installwizard shield
i know i will love this but as my new ipod + hp was charging, i rounded up all my cd's sorted them, read the manual front to back and sat down to download the software and get started.i cannot get the darn software installed.i keep getting thed 1607 error report and even after following every idea given, i am still without music.

it shouldn't be this hard

5-0 out of 5 stars Another PC addict CONVERTED by the iPod
I researched mp3 players for months and months, spent hours in electronics stores, read all the Amazon reviews, and never once considered an iPod.Just some sort of Apple prejudice from my formative years, I guess.

Then I ran into a review for one of the myriad OTHER non-Apple mp3 players on Amazon that basically said, "Get an iPod.You'll be happy you did.Apple just does things right."I looked into the iPod, and after my initial sticker shock I realized the reviewer had been right.Instead of completely revamping designs every year or two, or coming out with esoteric new models with new gimmicks attached to them, Apple has spent the past 5 or so years PERFECTING the iPod.It is truly a beautiful machine, from the pristine exterior to the elegant controls and interface.Case in point--if you pull out the headphones while a song is playing, the player automatically PAUSES the song, and lets you restart it when the phones are back in.This is but one example of the many thoughtful features of the iPod that other manufacturers couldn't even get their kludgy machines to do.

There was a learning curve for me, what with converting everything into iTunes and all, but the trouble it took was FAR outweighed by the pleasure of owning such a stunning piece of electronics.I am sure the iPod will only get better as Apple keeps making new models.

That said, I have some advice for anyone thinking of buying one:

A) Research and choose a case for your iPod BEFORE you bring it home. They're beatiful, but extremely prone to scratches. And you'll want to use it immediately. The case I bought (after a month of searching) was the iSkin eVo2, which came with a screen guard and a click wheel guard. There are products out there that will buff out scraches and dull areas out of your iPod, but getting them on there in the first place just feels bad.

B) It's also a good idea to research how to best extend the life of your iPod's battery. There are proven techniques that can help avert premature battery drain, which is apparently a complaint of some iPod users, due to the non-user-replaceable battery.

My only two (extremely minor) complaints are:ONE, with the player in your pocket, you have to put your hand all the way AROUND the player to access the controls. That's in contrast to having some or all controls available on the top of the unit. But, they make a plug-in device that puts supplementary controls on the top of the iPod now, so there you go.

TWO, unlike other media players, iTunes does not display song titles on the task bar. It's a minor pain to have to click over from what you're doing just to figure out who's singing. On the other hand, with the player minimized and set to "On Top Always", you don't have to deal with that, either.

Buy an iPod.I'm serious.I don't give perfect ratings on anything, but truly the iPod is one of few things in this world close to perfection.

Enjoy!

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't overbuy.
I bought the 40GB iPod from HP with the intention of putting my entire music collection on it.I was successful. It turned out I only had about 2700 tracks of music (which I thought was a lot at the time), and am only using a little less than a quarter of the the capacity of the 40GB.I really could have saved some money by getting the 20GB model instead.Lesson learned: Take the time to count how many tracks you'll be storing and then select the correct capacity leaving some room for future expansion.

As far as the operation and sound quality go, I am 100% satisfied.

Be prepared to purchase some 'armor' for your iPod.I bought both the silicon and the leather versions of cases. The silicon armor is tough to get on and off of the iPod, but offers pretty good shock and dust protection. The leather armor is easier to take off but it more readily allows dust to get trapped against the iPod screen.I found that you have to remove the armor if you want to use a docking station.

One last note... you will probably want to get speakers to share your iPod music collection with others. Many brands are available, but I'll leave that up to your research. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Faithful little player!
Nothing but positive things to say!The software that comes with this one is so much better than iTunes, and i don't *need* 20 gb of space--my Nitrus is only about 3/4 full and that's plenty for me.Don't bother with all the Rio Internet Updates--they're nothing but trouble. As long as you keep away from those, you shouldn't get the dreaded "upgrader" freeze or anything like that.

I have gone through two Rio Nitruses, but that's my own fault. They're the best thing since sliced bread while they work--unfortunately, the first one had an unfortunate run-in with a magnetic bag closure, and the second one is still functional, though its LCD is broken :( highly upsetting. At any rate, the battery life is phenomenal--about twice that of the iPod--and this delivers excellent sound, even with the in-box earbuds (Sennheiser mx300).There's a custom equaliser option, which is very nice, and the menus are straightforward and easy to navigate.

The size is excellent--this fits nicely into the back pocket of my jeans, and is very light. It's almost perfect!I just wish it were more durable!!!If my original had survived, I would have given this a higher rating, but alas.....4 stars out of 5.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Player and Good Customer Service
I bought a Rio Nitrus about 3 months ago and it was great. I used it for 3 months and it stopped working and began displaying an upgrader message. After trying everything to make it work again I called Rio customer support and told them about the problem. They were very polite and after I told them everything I tried to do to fix it they told me it would no longer work and that they would have to send me a new one. By following their instructions I was sent a brand new Nitrus free of charge. Don't believe the reviews that say the customer support was horrible because it wasn't.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good while it worked
I purchased a Rio Nitrus in the Summer of 2004. I filled it with about 300 songs from CDs and Napster. It met my needs, it was small, inexpensive and held just enough songs. Unfortunately, in March 2005 it stopped working. It was stuck in UPGRADER mode and after many weeks of failed e-mail assistance I called the support number. They told me that the player was broken (really? how about some reasoning) and that I could buy a factory-reconditioned unit for 75$. I was out of warranty and out of luck. I am considering upgrading to the 5GB Zen Micro or Rio Carbon, but I am hesitant to purchase further products from RIO.

1-0 out of 5 stars Nitrus is UNRELIABLE and RIO's customer service is bad
Within a few weeks of owning this player it began malfunctioning.I never jarred it or dropped it but I have thought about smashing it with a brick. It spent its life on a desk top and couldn't handle that job without screwing up.The software included in the new packaging is clunky and only partially functional. The "Rio Taxi" and Rio Music Manager" software with do little more than leave you frustrated by its constant dead-ends and error messages. But, let's get to the worst problem of all - the RIO NITRUS MP3 Player. It's junk !!!The internal hard drive is prone to skipping and locking up.When I spoke with Rio about this they told me, "it was to be expected with a hard-drive player."Giving them the benifit of the doubt, I continued using my player for another 2-3 weeks.Right around that time it became totally unresponsive and impossible to use.RIO's answer to this was to send it back to them (along with $80) in exchange for a reconditioned unit. What a deal,,, buy a $200 mp3 player and 4 months later send it back to the factory (+ $80) for a new (opps, I mean reconditioned) one.The take home message is, avoid anything with the RIO name on it.

5-0 out of 5 stars VERY GOOD MP3 PRODUCT!
For the price that it is, i truely think that this is a great MP3 player. It can hold over 450 songs, you can create many playlists which can inlcude "slow songs," "On the move," "Top 20" (etc.)I know over 450 songs might not sound a lot considering the fact that IPOD can hold over 1000, but think about, that is still quite a bit of songs! When you get tired of one of the songs, you can just erase it and replace is with a song that you currently like. And adding/erasing songs is as easy as counting to ten! You just put the "Rio CD" in that comes with your product, insert it into your computer, highlight the song that you want to delete, push "delete," and thats all you need to know in order for yourself to be able to delete it. Then you just transfer the song that you want onto your MP3 onto it! Easy, huh? The search capabilities are also amazing as you can search via artist, track, track #, album, genre, year, or new music that you have just put onto your MP3.

Another thing that i have to "brag" about this Mp3 product, is the quality of it. It is amazing! There is apsolutely no static in it whatsoever which i found to be excellent/quite surprising considering the cheap price of this product. Obviousely, it also depends on the kind of headphones you have, but the Rio Nitrus itself, has excellent quality also.

It is of course, extremely small, so it is easy to take around with you. In fact, the rio nitrus is even smaller then both an ipod mini, and an actual ipod.

If i had to complain about a con about this product, it would probobly be the fact that it doesn't have very long battery life. Listening to it for two hours a day, for about a week will do it in terms of battery. But if you just recharge the battery overnight everyday, you will not have a problem.

As a result, the Rio Nitrus is an extremely good product, and probobly one of the best MP3's out there! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars "the coolest" way to get junk "on the market"
Don't make the same mistake I did! I signed up for one of those get-iRiver-free "offers" that are continually being posted here.

Within one day, I received over 200 spam emails and 15 telemarketing calls. What a pain. I guess there really is something to the saying "you can't get something for nothing".

I hope everybody here will learn from my extremely bad experience and avoid these ridiculous pyramid schemes.

5-0 out of 5 stars coolest item out on the market!
http://tiny2go.com/1w sign up here and complete the videoprofessor offer and you can get it at no cost...this is a must have item and you can get it legitly free here!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Before you decide to buy...
I've done extensive research in trying to find the perfect portable video player. From all the magazine reviews, sites like CNET and suchforth, customer reviews, and hands-on experience, I decided to purchase the MSI MEGA View 566.The MSI Mega View was one of TechTV's finalists for most innovative products at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES 2005).If the features of the iRiver PMP appeal to you, consider taking a look at MEGA View 566 (Check out the product page for more info). It has almost identical features at approximately the same price.

Like the iRiver, the MEGA View 566 can play mp3, wma, wav, divx (avi), mpg, and your digital photos. It has a built-in FM tuner, voice recorder, an A/V Input and Output with composite video to record video from TV or other sources and so you can view files on your television set.You can rest the player on the tripod that is included.Unlike the iRiver, an extra battery is included for more playtime on those longer trips!Since playing with the unit a few weeks ago, I can't get enough!

If you're still researching for the perfect player, take a minute and check out the MSI MEGA View 566.

1-0 out of 5 stars Annoying!Avoid, avoid, avoid!
I was very excited to get this player as a holiday gift.I was looking forward to watching the TV shows I recorded using Windows Media Center edition on it.But this turns out to be impossible - the PMP-120 runs a Linux operating system and does NOT convert recorded TV files (*.dvr-ms) and moreover it won't sync with Windows Media Player 10, which would in fact convert such files.

I spent five hours trying to set it up to watch TV and only learned this sorry fact through extensive Googling.Certainly I could not learn this from the embarassing manual or from the poor automated help service at iriver itself, nor from the 800 number (I spent 45 minutes on hold then gave up).

Apparently the PMC-120 (PMC not PMP) is in fact Windows Media Player compatible, but at this point I'm not sure I'll trust another Iriver product, because their support is so poor.

Stay far, far away from this!

4-0 out of 5 stars Finally a PVP that I can tolerate
I had bought Creative PVP sometime back, but had to return it bcoz it uses Microsoft Media Player. Wrong media player choice. It makes the whole process of uploading media very tiresome and slow. So i returned the Creative.I checked iRiver at the store and found that it did NOT use Windows Media Player. SoI bought it. I have been playing with it over the past couple of weeks. It provides a DIVX codec software and associated media converter software, that makes importing videos easy. Use the Portable Media Center DIVX profile, when coverting videos.I use the AVI format to upload videos onto the player. It is also a full featured mp3 player, voice recorder and a fm tuner. The speakers are little bit low in volume, so have to use headphones in noisy situations. The fit and finish of the hardware is not as nice as Creative. The software has some spelling mistakes such as "FM Tunner" instead of "FM Tuner". But at the end of day, it does what it is supposed to do. And it provides all the software and cables right out of the box.I am in process of creating a PC based DVR solution, to capture and record live TV. iRiver will then become my portable video system. iRiver can also send video signal's to TVs through a provided port and cables.Provides USB Master port capabilities to interact with other USB port capable devices, without using a PC. It comes with a nice hard case, that U can use to carry it around and to even prop it up while watching it on an airplane. Battery is removable type, so u can buy an extra one, if U are on a really long flight. PVP space is still evolving fast, so expect to see lots more new models coming out in next couple of months. If like me, u want one right away, iRiver is an reasonable choice. You will need some experience in media conversion to successfully import videos in a watchable format. Experiment with video sizing, audio mixing etc till u get it right.iRiver has also released another PVP that uses Windows Media Player. Do not buy that, unless you have a full featured Windows Media Center PC.

An update to the review. Using Pinnacle Dazzle DVC 80 Video capture device (USB based) and excellent Pinnacle Video Capture Software, I have been able to successfully capture TV output and import into iRiver. I had to reconvert the Dazzle AVI output files to iRiver AVI using the iRiver media converter software. Now I have a complete portable video solution. I am a bit surprised it all actually worked. I was even able to capture HD channel outputs from my DISH TV satellite box using the AV components in the back of the satellite receiver. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars This Player Made it Through the War!
So, I got a Jukebox 3 for Christmas two years ago.Since then, I took it with me backpacking for six months around the world, use it daily at work, take it with me whenever I travel, use it as my home stereo, and generally beat the hell out of it.I've dropped it multiple times on hard surfaces, and exposed it to heat, cold, and almost anything you can think of.I am so impressed with this product and its durability.

Sure, there are some drawbacks to the Jukebox 3.It does not have the stylish look of the Jukebox Zen or an iPod.It is bigger and bulkier than either of these devices. However, in some ways I think that actually works in the Jukebox 3's favor: I feel totally comfortable leaving it sitting around at work, because it basically looks like a cheap CD player.I think of it like inadvertant theft-prevention.

Here are a couple things I dislike. The power button has a stick to it, so I need to wiggle it to make it pop back out again. Not a very well-designed button, but it's a pretty easy thing to deal with. The syncing software freezes up when I try to back up my whole music library.I havn't really figured this one out yet. Those are the only two things keeping me from giving it five stars.

So, I would highly recommend buying this product. For less money than an iPod I feel that I got much more.I have a friend who has an iPod, and the one-way nature of it plus the fact that it does not record drives him absolutely nuts.He is actually jealous of my player!

5-0 out of 5 stars Took it all over the world, and it still works
I have read a lot of negative reviews on this system and would just like to add my own Imput. I bought my NJ3 in SEP 02. I took it with me to Afghanistan for 7 months. Afghanistan happens to be the worse place for Electronics in the worlds. Dust and filth... Just Awful. I dropped my player quite a few times. Took it with me on missions. Used it every single day. After 2 years my player still works perfectly. Its worn beyond belief but still works fine. Just letting all of you know these units are as tough as them make them....

5-0 out of 5 stars Everything I expected
I've owned my Nomad Jukebox for about 2 years now, and it has served me very well.Whereas the Jukebox 2.0 version was unstable, this unit has caused me no problems whatsoever. The sound quality is good, the interface is intuitive, and the thing just keeps working without a hitch. The battery life is pretty good, as well, which is always a point of contention with portables.Overall, I'd really recommend this unit.

1-0 out of 5 stars for the love of god, don't buy it
Having had my jukebox for 5 months until it absoutely died, leaving me with a large space in my pocket and the loss of music I'd spent hours transferring, I have to say that the fragility of this player absolutely negates any enjoyment you might have while it works. My player was very gently used, it now only boots in Rescue Mode and gives me a 'hard disk problem' message for all functions on that menu.Creative technical support insists that the player must have been dropped (which is apparently enough to completely destroy the hundred-dollar hard drive) and the warranty does not apply - you have to pay for all repair - over two months after the date of purchase. In a case like mine this probably means paying about half the original cost of the jukebox to replace the hard drive with a new one under a similarly scanty warranty. For the investment value of an mp3 player, my jukebox leads me to believe that you'd be better off with an I-Pod.Don't buy it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't Waste your Money!!!!
Bought this product one night before a trip that was to last me 2 weeks.I stayed up until 1:40am in the morning trying to figure out how this product worked, only to end up getting an error message on the player that don't me the hardware was not working.I cannot belive that i wasted an entire friday night trying to figure out this piece of junk.ON a plus side the software that it comes with was excellent at making MP3s. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Poor sound quality, no EQ
This player has it all:FM radio, MP3 playback, a remote, and it's joggable with a special hand strap. The earphones, by the way, are excellent! What this device suffers from is poor sound quality, with meager means of customization. You have two options when it comes to sound processing:Bass boost on (which makes the music sound blown out and distorted) or bass boost off.Overall, music sounds unpronounced and muffled.I've tried using the player with a few different sets of earphones, all with the same effect. This device towers over others, especially at price-point, on functionality.I mean, it does it all.But unfortunately, sound quality suffers on this device. If that's not important to you, this might be a good player for you.If you want to hear high quality playback, this isn't for you.I really think that if JVC had included more options for equalization (EQ), the sound playback issues wouldn't be so overshadowingly bad.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don'tbother...
Really, you deserve better. Battery life isn't good, 20 hours at most just doesn't cut it for me. Sound quality is pretty good, but if you plug in your headphones diectly to the player without using the remote, you can definately hear that annoying little hissing sound. When using the remote the cord is too long and tangles easliy. The unit itself is rather bulky and thick. My friends cd players are practically half the thickness of this one. The controls are easy to use, especially the skip album one which is useful if you dont want to press the skip button over and over again when you use an mp3 disc. Speaking of mp3's, it plays them well but all the songs get put in alphabetical order which is pretty annoying unless you just use random. One nice little feature is the handstrap which makes it easy to use while jogging. However, of course, the cord is way too long while you're jogging with the remote attached. Just recently it started skipping occasionally, even though it usually had very good anti-skip protection, and sometimes it would restart itself when it was jostled too much, making it useless for jogging. It was very tempramental like this for a week or two until it finally just broke down and died on me a few days ago. The radio still works but whenever I try to play any cd, all it says is "OPEN" when it's clearly closed. The radio's decent, nothing special though. In conclusion, don't waste your money on this thing, go for a player designed more for workouts or even a flash mp3 player if you've got the cash for one.

2-0 out of 5 stars Poor battery perfomance
Poor battery performance and the difficulty of making sure the unit is completely turned off have spoiled my satisfaction with this CD player. All too often, I have tried to play a CD only to find that the unit has mysteriously changed to the FM mode (I never listen to the radio so I never turn that mode on) and exhausted the batteries.Although the unit will turn itself off if accidentally left on while playing CDs, this does not apply to the FM mode.It will play until the batteries are exhausted, and with only 20 hours battery playtime to begin with, this means FREQUENT battery changes. There should be an AC adaptor readily available for this player with the other available accessories, as this is the only way I am going to be able to afford to use it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Slim-body? I don't think so!
I bought this cd player a couple of weeks ago, it has good fm reception, nice quality audio, the headphones are great. The cd player look better in the pictures than it really is, is kinda big, the carbon finish is lame. About the remote, it can't change between preset stations, only does seeking but it changes between tracks though. Well, it still a nice cd player but I recommend the use of a carry case and the screen could be better. It works for me, cause it was cheap, good for the price I paid. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Mine will not stay on!

Any little bump and the one I bought will go off.The only way to get it to work again is to pull the battery out and reinsert it, sort of like re-booting a computer.Pull the headphone jack out and it will go off, put the headphone jack back in after you get the thing back up and running, it will go off.touch any of the other buttons, it will go off.
My advice, buy something a little better made, something with more QA at the factory.

4-0 out of 5 stars Armband included
In a couple of reviews the customers did not receive an armband. I just received the product with an armband. It was not inside the box. It was in a ziploc bag outside of the original packaging. I did not get charged for the armband. Guess I'll have to return the armband I ordered separately based on previous customers' experiences.
Since this is a gift I cannot review the product so my star value is questionable here. However I did do a lot of research and this product seemed to have great reviews. It did get shipped to me within a week after I purchased it.

5-0 out of 5 stars awesome little mp3 player
I purchased this item on 10/3/04 and received it on 10/7/04. It bothered me that UPS left it outside my front door, but Amazon or JetAudio don't always have control over that. I purchased my iAudio4 from Amazon instead of directly from JetAudio because the shipping was $3 cheaper on Amazon. I debated between the 512MB and the 1GB units, but finally decided on the 1GB unit because I felt the extra 512MB was worth another $50; so, instead of being able to store about 8 hours of mp3 music, I can store 16 hours of mp3 music with the 1GB model (which is much more than I'll need, but it will keep me from deleting songs so that I can add new songs; this way, I can keep all the songs I like without having to add/delete).

The quality is very good. Here are some points:
1) Be careful opening the battery compartment; be sure to just slide the compartment open a little bit and then lift it out (as opposed to sliding it completely back to expose the USB connection). If you slide the compartment all the way back and then lift up, then you will break-off the little tab which keeps the compartment housing attached to the unit for USB use. You'll see what I mean when you handle the unit (just be gentle).
2) The buttons are well positioned and they all worked just fine. The menu structure is simple to learn and easy to use.
3) The unit was smaller than I had expected, which is great.
4) The screen is big and clear. The colors are cool.
5) The battery indicator works well, and if you click on the Information menu, you can see the actual battery voltage (a really neat feature, I thought).
6) The sound is excellent. There are several ways to adjust sounds (as indicated in the product details at the beginning of the Amazon webpage).
7) The radio worked great.
8) The voice recording also worked great.
9) The product does NOT include an armband as indicated in the product details section. It does include a neck strap.I have reported this inaccuracy to Amazon. You can purchase an armband from JetAudio for a reasonable amount...see their website.
10) I connected to Windows XP without any problems (after turning-off my virus scanner and the Windows firewall).
11) I was able to download mp3 songs to the unit just fine; the download speed is fast.
12) I did not install the software CD.You don't need it to copy files to the unit (just use Windows Explorer).
13) I did upgrade the firmware to version 1.60a (which you can download from the iAudio or JetAudio websites).
14) The unit is very attractive; I purchased the metal silver (they also have a model with a black face plate).
15) Check-out iAudio's website for a lot of helpful info like user forums, where folks post helpful stuff about iAudio units.
16) The unit comes with 1GB of memory, but due to the firmware and special effects, 983MB is available for music/file storage (which is still plenty for me).

I'm very pleased with my iAudio4 1GB unit.I purchased it for my partner for Christmas.Yes, I'm doing my Christmas shopping really early in order to avoid out-of-stock situations (and in order to get the best price). The Amazon price was the best price I could find on the web. This Amazon purchase is not directly through Amazon, it is through JetAudio.JetAudio promptly sent me an email to confirm my order and then sent me another email with the UPS tracking number. They did an excellent job of processing my order quickly and correctly.

My only complaint: This unit is pricey when compared to other units.I seriously considered the Creative Labs Muvo TX FM 512MB, but it is not available yet.Only the 256MB version is available.Creative Labs prices are much more reasonable and after doing much research, I learned that this particular Creative Labs product also received top marks from consumers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for an MP3 user
I bought my IAudio4 and I am very impressed with the signal to noise ratio, the colors, the storage space, and many other options.I used it to record a mix that I heard on the radio with excellent results.I suggest this unit to all music lovers, especially if you want to use it to work out with!

CON: I did not receive an arm band with the unit.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect player
the sound on this device is extraordinary. i recorded my class. the recorded sound is also great. this is like weapon... "i spy"...

size is small, very light, amazing colorful display. base is wonderful.

this is extremely cool!! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good flash player with bad accessories
The player is relatively easy to use after a quick run through the instructions.Nice setup to the layered menus and I found the control stick easy to use despite its small size.Sound is good and it was priced similarly to other flash players. The headphones are poor but that seems to be typical for factory offerings included with MP3 players.Big negative for me was the sport armband.Might not be an issue for some but if you intend to move around at all it is a necessity.Armband is poorly designed, too small for an average arm, and looks completely ridiculous (even for an armband, think Judas Priest).Iriver does sell a very nice separate "sport case with armband" but include that $20 cost in your comparisons to other players. If it came with the better armband I think the 790 would be a great buy, but since I have to buy that separately I might as well buy an ipod or save $40 and buy a Creative N200.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Amazing Little Toy
This thing is amazing! I took it everywhere. It's amazing how it's so compact that it fits into your pocket. The controls are a little difficult but if you read the book, it becomes very easy. The only suggestion I have for iRiver is that they make them water tight. I had mine for about five months before someone spilled soda on it. Amazingly, the computer part of it still worked but the controls and USB port became very stuck after about a day. I haven't figured out if it can be cleaned or not.

I reccommend this to anyone. Just avoid mixing it with Sieraa Mist.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fun, Reliable, and mostly easy to use
As some previous reviews claimed, the iRiver is great in that it:
(a) is small and lightweight, with a very convenient arm band for when I do my 5-mile runs.
(b) lasts a long, long time on a regular battery.
(c) is fairly easy to use for downloading, as long as you stick to the WMA format and use the CD software that comes with it.
(d) holds a decent number of songs, although I find that I have to switch my playlists at least once a month.
(e) doesn't skip.

However, figuring out the bells and whistles is surprisingly complicated (even for someone like me who tends to intuit gadgets fairly well). If you download *folders* of music and play straight from those, it's easy enough to figure out how to shuffle tracks and switch between folders, but I've given up on trying to actually program any *playlists*.

Other small nuisances include:
(a) the player occasionally switches songs when I try to adjust the volume while running, because the same small joystick controls both functions.
(b) the included ear buds are no good for running, because they'll fall out.
(c) the radio feature is nice, but I don't get nearly as good or reliable reception as I do with my car stereo.
(d) **** this one is my worst pet peeve **** the "random shuffle" mode doesn't randomly shuffle through all the songs in a folder in any true *random* fashion. Unless I keep my folders small, I find that some of the same tracks come up in the same order every time I run, and what's worse, some songs never get played at all, even if I try to skip ahead to all of them--instead, the player goes back to the beginning of the "random" list and plays the same songs in the same order again. (For those out there who know that random doesn't always *appear* to be random, trust me--this feature doesn't work correctly with more than a couple of dozen tracks.)

Nuisances aside, I am pretty happy with the purchase.

4-0 out of 5 stars OGG file capability makes this a great value
I've owned this player for about three weeks now and am very happy with it. Very nice sound quality and fairly easy to use. There are a few things that put it over other 256MB players in my opinion...

1. UMS FIRMWARE UPGRADE. This is probably the most important thing I'll list. I did this as soon as I got the player and it made it that much better. Contrary to what some other reviewers may say here, you CAN make this device (as well as ANY products in the IFP-700 or 800 series) function as a regular flash drive, and not have to use the included IRiver software to transfer songs. Just go to the IRiver site and/or Google search for the UMS firmware update for this device (currently it is at version 1.28). Once you upgrade the firmware (the instructions are easy to follow on the site) it will operate not only as an MP3 player, but as a portable storage device for ANY type of file you need to transfer. This also makes it MUCH easier to transfer/arrange/rename/delete your files around on the player, as you can do it in Windows Explorer instead of doing it through the onboard player menus.

2. OGG FILE SUPPORT ALLOWS YOU MORE SPACE FOR SONGS WHILE STILL RETAINING HIGH QUALITY SOUND. For those not aware, OGG is a file type similar to MP3, but with better quality and smaller file size - IE, a 128kbps OGG file will sound better than an 128kbps MP3 file. Although it's unfortunate that it won't support any bitrate of OGG, it's a very minor issue. The lowest it will accept is 112kbps, but considering that's practically on par with a 160 kbps MP3, you can fit a lot more songs on here than you could with MP3s of an equivalent quality. I've encoded all my songs at 112kbps in OGG format and it's less than half-full with 32 songs on it - and they all sound very good. Should be able to fit about 70 songs on here no problem, which is more than enough for me since I mainly use this as a workout music player. If you're unfamiliar with OGG files just go to vorbis.com and check out the oggdrop program. Very simple to use, set the bitrate and then just drag and drop wavs to encode them.

3. QUALITY HEADPHONES. While they certainly aren't the best money can buy, they certainly ARE better than most pack-in headphones you get with CD or MP3 players. I see no reason to buy seperate ones. (note - the ones included with this model are the ear-bud type, I'd recommend putting the included foam-ish covers over them to avoid them becoming uncomfortable)

4. BATTERY LIFE. The fact that it uses a AA battery instead of a AAA battery makes it last longer than many other MP3 players. It won't quite reach the 40 hours advertised, but it's certainly well upwards of 30.

5. EXTRAS. Although the included arm-band won't win any awards, and the only bicep I could see it fitting around would be...oh, maybe Rick Moranis', it fits fine around just about anyone's forearm and the headphones are long enough to accomodate just about anyone...I'm 6'6 and it was plenty long enough for me while running. There is also a neck band included if you want to wear it around your neck instead. The documentation with the product is fairly well written, although there are so many menus and little features that some people may feel a bit overwhelmed at first. It also comes with a protective plastic-ish cover which slips over it and attaches to the armband. I just leave the cover on most of the time so the screen doesn't get scratched. Also includes an FM radio and voice recorder which I don't have much use for but will definitely appeal to most people. Finally, it also has a connector cord included if you need to do any direct line-in recording which is another nice feature, but something I don't think I'll ever use.

MY MAIN PROBLEM with this product is the joystick control. The little joystick is...LITTLE. I often find myself hitting up when I want to hit right, or hitting right when I want to push the stick in. Occasionally I'll be trying to turn the volume up and end up skipping to the next track instead. You'll probably want to be sitting still when you are using it, otherwise it may become a baffling ordeal for even the most brilliant among us.

I'd definitely recommend this if 256MB of space is large enough for you. If you encode your files properly like I talked about above you can fit quite a few songs on this. This is mainly used by me as a music player during workouts and so far it has worked great. I may upgrade to the 512MB version someday, but for now this serves me fine. If it weren't for the annoying controls/interface, this would be 5 stars easily.

1-0 out of 5 stars Okay if it works...
When I began shopping for a small MP3 player to use during workouts at the gym, I looked at the same things most people would look at: features and price. The iRiver 256 MB Player seemed to meet all of my requirements, so I bought it. Then reality set in. I took it home, installed the music management software on my PC (running Windows XP), and then the nightmare began. Try as I might, I couldn't get the software to function properly. Essentially, it refused to recognize the player when I plugged it into the USB 2 port. I tried everything I could imagine, but no dice. So....I decided it was time to call tech support. Imagine my surprise when I discovered that iRiver's tech support hours are Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. MST. Coincidentally, those are my office hours! Once it appeared that I was never going to get the software to work, OR be able to contact tech support, I packed it up and returned it. I chose a Rio 256 MB player instead, and haven't looked back. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not bad
I've had it for about 2 years not and it hasen't messed up once. Though whenbought this it was top of the line but you can now buy MP3s for almost the same price, maybe 20 bucks more...but it will have like 3x the memory. Don't buy this now unless you plan to upgrade later (maybe get smart and invest in a Ipod...i did and that works fine too)Just my opinion.

2-0 out of 5 stars just my luck
apparently doesn't work with windows xp program, my usb port is not detected when i plug the mp3 player into it..

4-0 out of 5 stars Works fine.
I've had this item for over a year and it works fine. Simple, easy to use and understand interface. No frills( that's a plus) Only complaint is the first one I had had intermittent problems reading the smartmedia card. At first I thought the problem was the card (it wasn't). I exchanged the unit it's worked fine ever since. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Problems!
disclaimer:I purchased a "refurbished" product from internet.

I received on a Monday at 6:00 p.m. and by Tuesday at the same time (1 DAY) the hard drive had already crashed and broken... something about needing a new HD System and needing to format the HD... 1 day and already this!I have to go thru some warranty company which will take a long time I assume.RCA wants nothing to do with this. This sucks.I don't recommend this product to anybody.Pay the extra money for an ipod!!!!

2-0 out of 5 stars Very Slow
This thing is very slow and it constantly freezes (at least the one I had). Also, it is too expensive to be such a piece of crap. (...)

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't recommend it.
My Lyra Jukebox stopped working at 3 months, just after the warranty expired. There is NOTHING I can do about it and now I'm approximately $300 in the hole with no way to listen to my music, and I can't afford to lose that kind of money again.

If I ever have enough, I'm buying an iPod and sticking with it instead. The Lyra had problems even before the hard drive just stopped working one day out of the blue- it wouldn't load certain songs, even when they were re-uploaded and the files were checked for errors. It froze up on a regular basis. Some of the keys even stuck.

Personally I am never buying RCA again, and would definitely not recommend the product.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for the money - no need for iPod
I got a 20GB iPod for Christmas the year they came out, but I returned it when I realized that - like all Apple products - it came with bupkus. I exchanged it for the 40GB Lyra - more space, decent headphones, car adaptor, case, charger, the whole shooting match. And I got it for substantially less than a comparably sized iPod.Songs are drag-and-drop easy, plays songs from all music subscription sites, easy interface, easy sync.

I use it for an external drive as well, for all kinds of files.

Small snags with power freezes when unplugged from external power source, but updated drivers fixed.Very happy overall.

1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible MP3 player, good price.
If you are looking for a good MP3 player, this IS NOT the one for you. It is the worst MP3 player ever, it freezes on you, mine even stopped working. The downloads for this player don't even work, it can't detect my MP3 player, DO NOT BUY! ... Read more
