4-0 out of 5 stars Surprised sound quality.
Pleasantly surprised with the sound quality in such a small and light device. Earbuds just so so. (Use my own superior earbuds, so it's okay.) The FM tuner reception is not that good, that's why the four stars. Bought this manufacturer-refurbished for about $50. Spend an additional $27 for an SD 512 mb flash memory(512 mb works in the external memory slot!). The software works well with my Windows XP/Windows Media 10. For less than $80 I get 640 mb of total memory, more than enough for what I need.

1-0 out of 5 stars Better hope nothing breaks cuz you'll be buying a new one
Rio no longer supports this model and the Sports case is cheap and breaks easily. Once it breaks, you are out of luck because Rio only carries replacement parts for their newest models. Do yourself a favor and buy something dependable with good product support such as Ipod, Iriver, or CreativeLabs..Leave Rio alone.

5-0 out of 5 stars So far so good
I've had my Rio for a couple of days now. It's been working great. The bundled software is not all that great, but if you have Windows XP and Windows Media Player 10 then you can use that. The player has good sound and is really durable. The armband took me a minute to figure out but everything works great. The internal memory is a nice starting size. I was able to fit 54 tracks on my internal memory (64Kbps - WMA format). I bought a 128MB card for $18 and that works perfect and now I have over 100 tracks on my player. I've been hearing that the player can handle cards up to 512MB despite what the specs say. I haven't tested it so it's still a rumor to me.

In conclusion, for the price this player is a very good buy. I use it when i work out and the armband is a nifty way to keep the player close but out of the way. I'm not sure is the USB interface is version 1 or 2 but the interface is really quick. When I update my track listing it takes about 1 minute and a half to transfer 54 tracks to my player. Check the Rio site frequently for firmware upgrades. When I got mine i had to upgrade the firmware which is a sinch and take about 30 seconds to do.

Just to add, many have complained about how the player tends to slip out of the armband when you move excessively (ex. Running or jogging). I have to say that I use my Rio everyday while running and have yet to have it slip out of the armband. I run just like everyone else, and wear it while playing basketball also and it has not fallen once.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great, But It Has a Few Flaws
The Rio Sport is an excellent little mp3 player. The sound quality is great as is the display. While, the original model came with only 128MB of internal memory, it has an SD slot making expansion fairly inexpensive, especially in 2005 when 512MB is available for $50.

In general, the construction is rugged with a rubberized enclosure apparently meant to reduce the affects of impact from dropping. It is also has a rather compact, odd shape that is probably less than ideal for someone wanting to store it in his pocket.

While there are a handful of small design flaws, two features that are particularly annoying.First, it has a four position concave rocker switch that is extremely sensitive. While this is great to use blindly with your thumb, it creates a real problem when placing the unit in a pocket as switch easily depresses, causing the RIO to change songs, stop, or pause.

In short, the Rio Sport is a decent mp3 player that could use a couple of minor interface modifications and feature enhancements

Pros
Excellent sound quality
Good battery life
Rugged
Compact

Cons
Main concave control button very sensitive, too easily depressed
Plastic bracket interferes with buttons and jack
Uses AAA batteries instead of AA

****Note that the technical description in Amazon is incorrect regarding the memory type and expandability. It uses and SD card and can go over 128 MB in total. My 512 MB card is working fine.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great little mp3 player
I used mine over 8 hours a week for over two years in a gym.It took many hard hits and continued to work.It worked for 6 months even after the plastic case was cracked. But the internal memory is starting to fail.Perhaps using it in a steam room was just too much for it.Very well made! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Lexar rock solid as always
i have a 128 Mb SD card and went with lexar based on prior experience and it was worth it this card is made in taiwan and now comes in a small holder for the card

highly recomnded

4-0 out of 5 stars not found problem yet
it works find in my MPX200 cell phone and R707 camera. The speed seems right for usb2.0. never had a problem since I bought it in Feb. 2004.

5-0 out of 5 stars Working Good for Me
First of all... the price and quality are superb.

I have owned mine for about nine months now enduring vacations in Austria and Mexico City.I have had absolutely no problems with my photos (regardless of the countless times I've erased single/all photos as well as formatted the card).

You will be pleased with this SD card.

5-0 out of 5 stars How many pictures will it store?
How many pictures will it store? It is the most commonly asked question from digital camera enthusiast but usually the question that is the most difficult to get a straight answer about.Well, considering I worked in the memory industry for over 7 years I can help clarify this perplexing question and do so unbiased as I have since changed industries.

The Lexar Media 256MB Secure Digital Card, like most 256MB cards, will store on average 284 pictures when used with a 2 megapixel camera, 213 images when used with a 3 megapixel camera,128 pictures when used with a 4 megapixel camera, 102 images when used with a 5 megapixel camera, and 80 pictures when used with a 6 megapixel camera. These numbers are based off the assumption that you are going to shoot your images at the highest quality JPEG setting available for the camera and understand that they are estimates and may be off by as much as 10 percent due to numerous factors including the complexity of the scene being shot and the compression algorithm used by your specific camera.

I truly hope this review was helpful to you in determining whether this card is the right capacity for your specific needs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Treo 600 Essential
I purchased this card for use in my Treo 600. It has functioned perfectly, allowing me to save various types of programs and files for use in my Treo. I have not had any problems with the lock feature, as other users have reported. I recommend this card to anyone who needs storage space in compact form. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars great MP3 player
I spent a lot of time researching on MP3 players before getting this one and it ends up ABOVE my expectation. I am glad that I picked this one.

The great things about this player:
- It has all the up-to-date features - line in, voice/audio/FM recording, light weight(even WITH an AAA battery), GREAT sound, etc, etc...
- the line-in jack on the player is a regular sized one (3.5mm, same as a regular speaker phone jack). For such a small MP3 player, that means you can plug most audio sources directly into this player without an extra adaptor.
- can be used as a portable mass storage device. I have Windows 98SE, and the driver for Win98 took less than a minute to install. WinXP shouldn't require any software.
- JetShell, the software that comes with the package, is NOT required but I use it for extracting audio CDs to MP3s, and I found the audio quality of the 128bps clips VERY good, better than other extracting tools I used.

Some things I wish I had on this player:
- NO change of color on LCD screen because that just takes up space: this is supposed to be a 512MB player but the actual free space you can use is a little more than 480MB.
- AC adaptor. Two hours of playing drained about 1/3 of the AAA battery life.
- Easier access to USB port - right now I have to open the battery cover to connect it. When you slide open the battery cover, it's very easy to accidentally press the buttons lining up on both sides of the player.

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific!!
1. Pros
Great overall sound quality, wonderful BBE effect, enough capacity, very loud, 124 different colors, FM, FM recording, Line In recording, Voice recording, very small, very light, ultra sexy, Mass storage, Mac suppport, Linux support. I can't live without this super garget!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great value/features for price, good sound, fairly easy.
If you're like me, you've probably spent way too much time making a decision on your first MP3 player to buy and are afraid you're going to make a wrong choice. I was a little nervous going with this more "economical" model, but ended up pleasantly surprised. Bearing in mind this is the only portable MP3 player I've owned so far, I'll base my review on what I was looking to get out of the player for my needs. I decided to consider Creative Labs in the first place because they've been making solid computer sound products for over a decade, and I've found their PC soundcards to be far superior to others in their price range.

If you're sitting there thinking "All I want is a good player so I can have tunes while I'm excercizing, without spending a firtune, and I don't want to spend 10 hours learning how to use it" then I would say that this is the one for you.

Size & weight - The unit itself is very small and light, easy to stick in your pocket and easy to forget about if you've got it strapped to your wrist or arm with the velcro strap (included). Picture a bic cigarette lighter, maybe just a tad heavier because of the little AAA battery it takes.

Sound - very surprising for it's price range and size. While the pickiest of audophiles out there might find something lacking, I certainly can't for all it's intents and purposes. The sound is clear and strong enough that you'll never have to turn it up all the way. Adjust the EQ a little based on your music and you should have no problems.

Unit Interface / Menu - navigating the menu is fairly easy, but it can get a little bit tiresome if you're trying to take advantage of the "extra" features. It's a simple scroll left & right "choose an option" kind of menu that causes you to go back and forth a bit while you're learning it, but it's still easy to understand. The buttons are tiny, but that hasn't presented a problem for me.

Completeness - there's nothing more to buy. It comes with earbuds, a velcro armband/wristband, a AAA battery, and software for copying your music files to it. The earbuds are not top of the line but they're just fine for general use and I like getting everything I need in one order!

Software and Setup - very easy. The "brain" slides out of the unit and plugs into your USB port. The software CD walks you through an easy installation process and makes it easy for you to drag & drop tunes into it. There are advanced features for special playlists and such, but I haven't bothered with it. I just want to plug it in, throw some music on it, and press play to hear music. I was able to do that without reading the manual, so I don't really care about the special features right now.

Extra goodies - aside from special playlist stuff you can do with the software, it has a built in microphone to record sound with. Don't expect great quality audio from the record mode. Consider it an easy way to take notes without a pen, and not much more. The FM radio feature is nice. It will let you easily "auto-program" the strongest station signals near you, and it's pretty simple to delete the ones you don't want and save the ones you do. You can also copy computer files to it, such as digital photos, word documents, excel, zip, etc... which makes it double as a flash drive.

Storage - I've found the 128mb to be enough space for about 2 hours of MP3's. You can fit more on it if you use WMA files instead of MP3. 2 hours of tunes is enough for my needs (and yes of course you can delete songs to add more) but if you think you need more then go for the 256 or 512.

This unit gives you more control over the playlist / songs than some other units that are much more expensive. Sure, you can just turn it on and let it play, or shuffle, but you can ALSO create ordered playlists and have more control if you want. More than I can say for some "trendy" common names you see brandished about ;)

My bottom line - you cannot go wrong with this, especially at it's price (at the time of writing this) of $67. This is the answer for anyone looking for a fast solution to their basic portable MP3 player needs, with a couple of extra fun/handy goodies on top.

If you're sitting there torturing yourself over a decision right now, and all you really want is a fast easy solution to portable tunes, then just buy this with confidence right now. You'll have it out of the package and playing your music within 15 minutes. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Small but great
I have one of these and I listen to it everywhere I go, great sound quality and good battery life. I have run out of space however, so I would recommend a newer one with a larger hard drive.

5-0 out of 5 stars ayyeee
So easy to use, and really cool in the with a tape deck or itrip.

Recommend to anyone.

4-0 out of 5 stars It's No Mini-Disc Player!
My Sony mini-disc player died after a short life (moment of silence). So when I got a new job, the toy of choice was an iPod. What a difference!

The bad as compared to the mini-disc player is that the iPod doesn't have an LCD display remote control. So with so many songs, it's hard to blindly navigate if your iPod is stashed away. Hopefully Apple will create such a remote. Otherwise, it wins over the mini-disc player hands down!

The new mini-discs hold 5 hours of music. 2 years ago that was a big deal. My 20 Gig iPod has 17 hours of music already and I am using merely 390 MB. That's less than a fraction of its capacity. The iPod's looking at me like, "When are you gonna REALLY add some music?"

The 3 lines of music data display the song title, artist, and even album! And the sound...oh boy. I feel like I'm at a concert! Excellent sound! You can also tweak the sound with the equalizer.

Once they make that LCD remote to make navigating easier, it'll be perfect.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is very expensivebut worth it
this is so cool. i got one for crhistmas and loved it. i have about 529 songs on mine because i get all of my songs from my schools media room. the teacher is devoted to apple brand software, computers, acsseories, and speakers. this is very cool and the songs are cheap. theres just one problem, when listening to loud songs, you should turn it down because for a small item, this can be hered from a room away when left playing and at max voloume! and it moves alone when its loud! but it is good and it has a cool backlight so when your in the dark, the screen lights up and so do the buttons. it dsiplays the time, date, and it has a photo and video slot and you can keep your scedhual. it also has games like brick and solitare. it also has a special game where it takes all of your songs and makes a music quiz where it gives you 90 seconds of a song and a list of songs for you to pick and get right. this is the only game that you can't listen to a song while playing. the back has it's own licences number and the logo. it has an area for your settings and your ipod's identity(a.k.a your name, tis number, the amount of songs it currently contains,, and the amonut of space you have left and how much is used. pretty cool right! thanks!

5-0 out of 5 stars Sweet!
When mp3 players came out I was fairly dissapointed until I discovered the iPods. Apple makes the absolutely top of the line mp3 player on the markey. Yeah, you can go buy a mp3 player for a fraction of the cost, but you'll also get a fraction of the quality.

The new iPod minis are great, but I'm still using my good old 10 gig iPod and it hasn't let me down yet. The batteries last practically 4ever, and it's durable and cool looking to.

A note to anyone trying to decide on size: don't automatically buy the biggest iPod just because it's the biggest. Chances are you're never going to use all of the space. One of the best ways to utilize the Pod is to put all your favorite music on it and then just set it to randomly shuffle between songs. You can't do this if you have a couple of gigs of the good stuff and 38 gigs of junk... ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars I have seen better
If you want a "good" digital camera, dont buy this one. Its ok for close ups only. You can play with taking different pictures like: negative, sepia, black & white, solarized, plastel, regular and sketch photos. If you scrapbook and want a different look for your layouts, this is ok. But this is about all I use it for. The buttons and dials are so small and very easy to hit something else because there so sensative. It says digital zoom is 4X but then its so grainy you cant see well. And make sure what-ever you are taking pics of is really well lit or that wont work either. Better yet, just take outside pics.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not exactly what I wanted
I purchased a smaller Mustek camera last year to take to Iraq.Great but did not last being run over by a HUMMV. I liked the small camera so I purchased the DV5500 as the replacement.I find that the controls all located in the one button on the rear of the camera are very senitive and hard to get to the right screen when you need them the most. The fact that the DV and the picture button are in two differnet locations was also difficult to someone who wants to take the camera and just start shooting.THe video quality is ok but the long lag time for focus is not suited for someone who needs results - like going on combat patrols and getting GOOD images!I did like the larger LCD screen and the fact that it rotates. The camera was much bigger than what I was looking for - but for the price it does take good pictures. For someone looking for a small camera that fits in your pocket I would suggest the Sony DSC T1 that does all the things this camera does and fits in the pocket - but of course is twice the price! For the price and what it can do and if you have patience and time to learn the features it is a good camera for the price- if you have non of the above - DO not buy this version of this camera wait for Mustek to catch Sony in development and bring the price down!

1-0 out of 5 stars Paper Weight - DO NOT BUY
The DV5500 is junk; do not buy. First, all inputs,
controls and fittings are sloppy and poorly made ( a
button/dial/knob etc. had to be "worked" in order to
get it to function; when it fundtioned at all. The
camera failed in operation within a month; would not
turn on or accept a charge. It was returned for service
following all prpper protocals. All I received for my
efforts was the same broken camera back - and something
more for my efforts. They had swiped the battery and
chip out of the camera to use elesewhere; your camera?
Can you believe that? They returned it missing the
battery and chip along with a preprinted form stating
there is nothing wrong with the unit. MUSTEK - NO !!!!

2-0 out of 5 stars Not worth buying yet
What if?

They included an FM radio with preset stations
An optical view finder
Some 4X level of optical zooming
Ensured constant production quality(early production line was crap)

Then it would be worth buying, even at a higher price.

Hope Mustek engineering read this, and act on it for the announced revamp of the product in August 2005.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't buy this camera
I strongly agree this camera sucks. The time stamp has a mind of it's own and regularly changes to a random time stamp. The controls are extremely difficult to use. Amazon was kind enough to replace it but the replacement has all the same problems. Mustek's suggestion to shut off the auto-focus during video recording had no effect. The playback was still noisy with clicks and burps. This piece of junk deserves 0 stars. If you think the zoom feature is continuous you will be disappointed. The zoom function click stops at four zoom levels only which looks ridiculous on playback. Every single function sucks and there is absolutely no use for this camera. Please save yourself the aggravation and DON'T BUY THIS CAMERA!!!!! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars shamelessly flawed
This is a potentially great product that's on the market despite being shamelessly flawed. I bought an ipod, but found that customer support was expensive and useless; I use it for jogging and basically the battery gets me through only one workout before it needs recharging; iTunes, which is the only way to get songs onto the iPod, is terribly limited. Most of all though, it's the battery that makes me resent Apple most. They're making a fortune selling something that (surely they know) is terribly flawed. It also makes you feel disgusted with the mass media, which is pushing this product because it's "cool," without paying to attention to whether it actually works.

1-0 out of 5 stars Died after 1 year and 8 months.
I used to love my ipod, but the fact that it recently died on me after a year and 8 months of use has left me with a very bad taste in my mouth. The most painful aspect is that I did not abuse it or use it heavily. The apple store guy at the genius bar informed me that a replacement would cost $250. Better than paying full price, but I am utterly disenchanted and will not pay for another ipod given my experience. Sorry Apple, you got to do better on the reliabilty issue before I even consider another ipod.

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT THING TO HAVE
Ipod is definatly better than CDs, I love it! I downloaded all
my favorite songs on the Itunes music store and on my cds and then downloaded them to the Ipod. I like it because it never skips, I can walk around with it everywhere. I take it everywhere
and is fun to take everywhere. I own it and keep it in my room
and play it sometimes when I want more music. I am gonna try it
for the car sometime to see how it works in the car, especially
when I'm on the road. It is definatly so much better than CDs.
I've downloaded more than 150 songs on Itunes on my computer.
Great item.

4-0 out of 5 stars I love my ipod!
What a great device. It stores everything I could want and then some. Its battery life is a little disappointing after several months, which is why I'm giving it four stars. The navigation is smooth and very effective. Long plane flights and car trips seem far shorter with this gadget in my hand.

Highly recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Player!
The Ipod is kinda pricey, but worth every penny.Great size.Sharp looking.Well designed and made.Opted for the 20G as I have a fairly large music collection.Hardly used any space even after having loaded a few hundred songs. I use a pair of well regarded, inexpensive Panasonic headphones thus sound quality is excellent.Ability to load and organize music is simply wonderful and quite fast via USB connection. The touch wheel is the best feature. While waiting for a case to arrive, I've covered the back with 3M paint tape to avoid scratches.Watch out if you're going to use a USB 2.0 interface. One card and driver kept causing the PC to crash when attempting to load music.Belkin USB card and driver work great. No crashes or problems.I agree battery life not great, but acceptable. One complaint I do have is the price gouching for Ipod accessories like auto charger cord, dock, cables, etc.I'm in heaven. No longer bored at work nor forced to talk to others.I can simply enjoy my tunes now as I work.

5-0 out of 5 stars One Tough Machine
I have had my lyra for about 3 years now, im a coach bus driver.
to say my lyra has been thru HELL would be an understatement, it has been droped bonched around rained on and frozen more then once, but it keeps going and going and going,
the energizer bunnie has nothing on my lyra. i think finding songs and playing music is a snap, and as for the guy that was complaining about the buttons getting hit, try the little switch on the side marked button lock, it works great to. in closing this little work horse can take what ever you can dish out.

2-0 out of 5 stars Only OKAY
I like to listen to classical music, and the RCA Jukebox is NOT the right MP3 player for classical. It is very hard to hear soft music, as the volume does not go up very high. Also, it is easy to hear the noises on the hard drive. The mP3 player is very bulky. One of the worst parts is that it doesn't work if it gets cold.Even in the summer, it might not work in intense air conditioning. The soft ware that comes with the jukebox is also hard to learn how to use.You have to pay more to upgrade it if you want any of the advanced features!I would maybe try the iPOD mini instead. The 20 GB hard drive is really appealing, but I doubt that that much storage is necessary for the average user.

3-0 out of 5 stars The low price makes it worth it for some people
Good things I have to say: It holds a ton of songs and for the low price it will be worth it for some people. The battery lasts about 8 hours and charges relatively fast. If you like to jog, it won't skip or have problems from rigorous movement. It allows you to make playlists while you are listening to music, which is pretty fun. After I downloaded the right drivers and software, it worked pretty well with my computer, though this may be complicated for some people.

Problems I have had with it: It cuts off the first second of every song, this is the most annoying problem it has. If you have the volumn turned down lower then half, you can easily hear the hard drive noise through your headphones/speakers. It sometimes stop playing and locks up entirely. You can't even turn it off when it does that. The only recourse is to hit the "Reset" button which can only be reached with a safety pin or similer thin object. After adding most of my song library, which was only 15 GB, it made the "Play All" setting unusable, because it takes too long to switch between songs. Even though the headphone design is very comfortable and has good quality sound, after 2 months one of the speakers broke which made them unusable.

I managed to buy this for $35 new from sears, so the extremely low price is the only reason I didn't take it back. If you demand excellence in your electronic products, stay clear of this player.

2-0 out of 5 stars Amazingly Poor Design
I'm going to give this product its deserved kudos in the beginning here so I can saturate the rest of the review with the negative this product also deserves. The windows-friendly removable hard-drive design is nice, and this product is fairly cheap.

Of course, it acts wonky and unpredictable.I would select a folder to play and it would refuse to just play the damned thing. After each song it would stop playing and change the mode to "repeat all".I have no clue why, either.USB 1.1 transfers are painful, and the transfer interface isn't exactly CONVENIENT for overnight transfers.Profiling the player takes an eternity, and you have to do it twice (unless i misunderstood how this thing works).

It's absolutely spellbinding how user un-friendly the case is.what is this case? It's horrible.I can't fathom its purpose.I stare at it night after night, trying to explain to myself what human being could have possibly made such a piss-poor design decision.Ugly.Bulky.Hardly protective.Inhibitive.Obnoxious.Ridiculous.Why?I have some old socks I could have used that might have fit better.

But (forgive me for jumping around) the worst aspect is definately the actual interface. There is no logical system. An iPod, or Rio Riot, has a system.Things are organized based on a hierarchy.Menus are layed out in a coherent pattern. This goes BEYOND learning curves, because accessing your music is just not convenient or intuitive. It's like standing on your head to work your coffee maker.

I have no idea why you'd by this flaky piece of garbage. There are other products in the price range with a better reliability record as well as more features.Don't waste your money.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, with some fiddling
I was able to get this on close-out at Sears for about $200.So far, overall I'm happy with it (after 2 weeks) and plan to keep it.Here's my 2 cents about it:

Pros:
1.Great sound quality
2.Battery life does last at least 15 hours
3.Organizes well
4.Does resume to last song played--starts at the beginning of the song
5.Metal case, very solid feeling
6.Great accessories included (except the case)

Cons
1.I play mostly WMA files, needed to upload quite a bit of firmware updates to make it work.
2.Needs to be reset now and then--but soft reset still keeps most of your settings (except backlight, equalizer settings)
3.Can get slow during shuffle mode
4.Can slow down when turning off

I purchased this to use in the car with the Belkin Tunecast II.It serves its purpose well, has been reliable after setting up.

A note about the Belkin Tunecasts, "II" seems to be slightly more amplified, but I'm not really that impressed with the clarity of either, as they both have quite a bit of distortion, at least driving around southern california. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Rarely works
I have used my device rarely for 2 yrs, sent it for service but with little improvement. Problem seems to be that it can't do anything useful like sound recording or connecting to computer while batteries are charging, and the charging takes 15 hours while useful time is 1-2 hours.

5-0 out of 5 stars 2 years on and still going strong!
It's been almost 2 years since I bought this mp3 player... and I bought it used, so who knows how long it had been used before that, and under what conditions.

Two weeks ago, I got new batteries for the player, as the included batteries had gotten down to about 2.5 hours of play time. I bought a set of 4 Energizer batteries here on amazon (they're relatively cheap here too!), and now, i probably get 12 hours of battery life.

I used to get worried when my player got down to about 30% battery life. Now i see that and i think "oh well, i'll charge it tomorrow night or something." So that's amazing.

The harddrive is almost full. I've got about 1 gig left. Every CD i own is on this player right now, along with a bunch of DJ mixes and whatnot. I'm hoping to get a 40gig laptop harddrive and replace the 20 sometime soon. Just a note, I own probably 300-400 CDs... so... it wasn't easy to fill this thing.

Also, if you've got this player, you should consider getting the iM2 speakers from Altec Lansing (get them here, and get them used, if you're smart). Those things get really loud for the size, and the color scheme actually matches the Archos! It's replaced my boombox in one swoop, and made vacations music-filled again.

For playlists, I recommend Winamp. Its free and easy. I just started getting into playlist making, and there's NOTHING like hopping into your car, hitting play, and knowing you've got 250 songs from various artists coming in random order (shuffle, of course).

So to wrap this up, I'll give you some essentials that I've learned from using this player over the years:

1) Download RockBox, and use it. The list of improvements is a mile long, and not subtle. For one, it shortens the time from power on to playing from about 30 seconds, to about 4.

2) Altec Lansing iM2 speakers

3) for car use, your options at this point are:
a) cassette adapter
b) in-dash cd player with Aux In (i got one! woo!)
c) fm transmitter (dont get this, it is a WASTE of money, and a gimmick to boot)

4) can anyone find a slightly more attractive carrying case than the "fanny pack" looking one that comes with it? that would be golden.

All in all, a great player, very durable, very upgradable, not for the computer illiterate.

1-0 out of 5 stars Keep looking...
I have had mine for about a year and a half now.It is reliably unreliable. There are bad sectors on the drive (apparently of Hitachi manufacture), which are uncorrectable and often result in unrecoverable data. The drive seems to panic unpredictably during data transfers (clicks, thrashes, locks up my computer for minutes at a time or until I reboot it), even when it is fully powered up and has been connected to the power cable for hours. This is the least reliable hard drive I've ever seen.

I bought it because it was supposed to be easier to see this drive in Linux than the Creative or Apple MP3 players.I also liked the idea that you can download the open-source Rockbox software to improve the functionality of the player.I wish now that I had just paid the premium for a better designed product. The factors on which I based my purchasing decision are moot if the product itself doesn't work for squat.I'm staying away from Archos from now on and hoping I don't get burned the next time I pick an MP3 player.

4-0 out of 5 stars Dated Jukebox Still Satisfies
Though it's getting kind of dated already (gee, has it already been two years?), the Archos Jukebox Recorder 20 is still my favorite electronics device I own. It has incredible sound for an MP3 player, let me say. I love its look and feel and the navigation is very user friendly and natural, in my opinion. It also seems to be quite sturdy, as I've dropped it several times without a problem.

Also, a note about its versatility: The early Jukebox models like this are really nice for people who are into customizable music collections, variable bit rate MP3s, etc. If you want to also, you can download the Rockbox hack for the Jukebox. It's basically an open source OS for the Jukebox that replaces the lackluster ARCHOS software. This adds much capability to your player, including gaming software, added functionality, battery life extension, customizeable sound, etc. Just do a search for it online.

PROS:

- Wonderful full-spectrum sound.
- Large storage space (it might as well have been unlimited for me)
- Great for people who are in to customizing their MP3 collection, using open source, etc.
- Easy menu system
- Batteries are replaceable, so you could keep it forever.

CONS:
- Heavy, heavy, heavy
- Initial software is limited, though Rockbox software is great.
- ARCHOS product support is bad, from what I know.

4-0 out of 5 stars How music saved my life
It's not an iPod. It isn't sleek, sexy, and white. It doesn't boast a fancy interface or clever dragging-your-finger-across-roughened-bits controls or third-party aftermarket add-ons or anything like that. Let's be honest with ourselves, the Archos is not made to be a fashion statement. It's made by people who want something to tinker with.

I purchased mine retail about 18.545 months ago and I can't say that I've ever been seriously unhappy with it. It weighs a ton and is the size of a couple of packs of cigarettes at least, so carrying it around gave me a nice little workout. The LCD screen is high enough contrast to show up well even under the searing light of the midsummer sun, and though the controls are a bit plasticky and sometimes hard to deal with, the interface is intuitive to anyone who's ever used a cellular telephone or digital wristwatch.

The very first thing I did when I purchased it was toss in a set of 2100 mA-h AA batteries to replace the cheap stock 1500 mA-h that came with the player. This improved battery life enormously and I was quite pleased with the result. Soon I was running from gun-toting thugs and making fast getaways with expensive imported vehicles with my very own and nigh-neverending soundtrack of thwomping electronica and discordant symphonic music.

It was worth it.

Alas, after a few too many close shaves at the hands of international drug cartels, my little Archos' hard drive was beginning to crash and act fitfully. In despair and leery of Archos' famous indifference to customer support, I purchased a Fujitsu laptop hard drive of slightly greater capacity and performed a delicate and tricky operation to swap the two. After many hours and some false starts (one involving a near-Frankensteinian scene in which I was holding batteries in place with my bare hands while tweaking contacts and shouting, "YOU NEVER WALKED AWAY FROM ANYTHING IN YOUR LIFE! FIGHT! NYARRRRGH!"), I managed to revive the Archos and was reunited with my bass-heavy Eurotunes.

With the new hard drive and the high capacity batteries, I can run my little Archos (geekily named Daath) for at least fourteen hours straight as a MP3 player. It performs capably as an external portable hard drive and has in its life turned in a far better performance than any paltry iPod could have.

In short, if you are not afraid of getting your hands dirty or of finding yourself on some moonless night in an airless crypt muttering arcane words from eldritch tomes while trying to breathe life into your Archos Jukebox Recorder, then this is the portable music device for you. If, on the other hand, you wish to eschew its fundamental ease of tweaking, simplicity of controls, sturdiness of manufacture, and resistance to all weapons short of a direct tactical nuclear strike, then by all means, get yourself something designed by some prissy latte-drinking, turtleneck-wearing font designer from California.

I, on the other hand, will drive into the sunset with my richly-accessorized imported getaway vehicle while listening to the latest and finest music on a device that is so simple it could hardly fail. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars I don't think Rio's very good...
The first time they sent me this player, it didn't recognize any discs, so I sent it back. The new one worked, though it skipped a lot on audio CDs that are older than 2000 AD, and doesn't recognize Fujifilm CD-Rs for some unknown reason... Then a year later the second one stopped recognizing discs. I'm just getting another brand.
This unit had lots of cool features for a good price, but unfortunately the performance wasn't as good quality. Now the player is only good for charging the batteries that only it uses.

1-0 out of 5 stars Another Horror Story
Brand new out of the box, doesn't recognize most discs. Even store bought music CD's. CD-R's, MP3's ... forget it! Don't even think of wasting your money!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Rechargable Batteries
Enough whining about the batteries already! If you want another set (and charger) simply go to "www.batteryconnection.com", click on the "Contact Us" link and tell them what you want. Some reviewers must not use the internet much, because it took me all of 10 minutes to find this site. The SP350 is a great player full of features AND extra batteries are NOT a problem to find. They have also recently become available on E-Bay. Search for "Prismatic Batteries" and you should find a seller.

1-0 out of 5 stars RioBites
Customer support is NON Existant for this unit. Batteries are Proprietery AA Gumstick batteries that even Rio does NOT sell.I have literally spent 8 hours on the net and contacting Rio to find batteries and the only person I reached said they were available at Best Buy........which of course Best Buy NEVER heard of. Why any company would use a proprietary battery in a world flooded with battery designs and then decide NOT to support there own units is beyond me. Very Dissapointed. Rio has FAILED again.......

1-0 out of 5 stars Horror story!
I am not going to repeat all the things that other people mentioned in the same sentence with RIO VOLT (e.g. skipping, bad support, etc.)I am only going to add another story.I bought mine at the BOSS store (it was heavily discounted), so I thought - "What'ta hell!."Bought it in Florida.Returned to GA figured out - no batteries!NOBODY ON THE INTERNET sells replacement batteries - NOT EVEN RIO VOLT THEMSELVES!!!!!Everybody, I urge you to BOYCOTT THOSE SOBs.This is not a right way to treat a customer at all.

When these speakers arrived they were smaller than I was thinking.Fortunately the sound they output totally surprised me.The line-in allows you to play music from iPods, walkmans, anything with a headphonejack.I'm glad I bought the model with 32mb built in; I also puchased a cheap 128mb card that always remains in the speakers. While this isn't a ton of storage for songs, it's still comes in handy when you want to listen to your favorite songs and don't have a music source on hand.

If you are looking for speakers exclusively for the iPod there are other options out there, for around the same cost, which have a "dock" just for the ipod (iMotion series)

Overall I'm very pleased with this purchase and would recommend to others.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not what I thought I was getting
I got this particular unit because of the embedded recorder and media reader.I have a voice recorder that I'm not crazy about because I dont love its proprietary file transfer software. With the TravelSound I thought, hey cool, I can stick in a memory card and have as much recording capacity as I want.

Not true -- you can't record to the card.Only to the 32meg of memory. So now instead of being able to pop the card and take my notes with me to some device that can generically read them, I have yet another device that I have to cable directly to my PC.I'd much rather leave the unit itself in my laptop bag and just stick the card in my pocket. The unit may be fairly small (though well over double the size of an ipod), but once you factor in the cables and such it's just a big inconvenience.

My sounds are apparently not going to be travelling with me the way I thought they would.

4-0 out of 5 stars Travel Sound MP3 Player with 32 MB Memory
These are fantastic speakers. The quality of sound compared to the size is simply incredible, and I'm speaking as someone who once did Sonar in the Navy.I listen to it at the office with the speakers set up in front of the monitor (no problem) as it plays either direct from an attached MP3 player or from it's own memory. They are about the size of a campbells soup can but at 1 1/2 times the height, easy to travel with. The sound fidelity and reproduction is astonishing. It won't fill a room, but it will fill your face if you set it on your desk and just listen.Simply superb.

My only complaint is with the installation software. Very slow and confusing, I am a programmer but I messed it up.Don't accidentally plug the unit into your XP system before installation is finished and you have rebooted, you will never be able to read the player from your main user ID.I wound up making a special "MusicMan" ID, sharing my music files and rebuilding all my playlists just for the sake of copying music to the player.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for sound in your pocket
I was looking for an active speaker system that would fit in my pants pocket and produce enough sound to practice dancing. I purchased 3 units to try - the Creative TravelSound MP3, the Sony SRS288 and the Panasonic RR-SPT70. After thorough testing, I've decided to keep the TravelSound and return the others. For me, the most important feature is that it fits well into my pants pocket and can connect to a sound source in my shirt pocket, such as my Palm Tungsten T3 (MP3 player) or Sony NetMD player. I rejected the Sony because it had a 16 inch cord, which was too short for pants with deep pockets. The others had 22 inch cords, which was adequate. I rejected the Panasonic because it was too long for my pants pocket when unfolded, and too fat when folded. The TravelSound fits into my pants pocket the best. Some other advantages of the TravelSound are (1) it doesn't have a grill over the speakers, which the others have. Hence, I can clean out grit that would get behind the grill of the other speakers. (2) At high volume the sound is less distorted that the Panasonic. (3) Although the MP3 player is a plus, it really needs an LCD screen. I control what I play using the Pocket Tunes MP3 player in my Palm, or from my MD player. Nevertheless, I still use the TravelSound's MP3 player for my favorites. One caviat, anyone planning to run the speakers from house current needs to be concerned about hum (reported by other reviewers). Since the TravelSound doesn't come with a power supply, to use house current, you should either get the power supply from Creative (sold separately), or get the Sony, which comes with a power supply that can be used world wide. If you buy a cheap power supply, it probably won't have enough filtering, and you'll get AC hum. The Sony has no hum when run from its power supply. I haven't tested Creative's power supply. With the TravelSound, I'm now a "walking boombox", and there is enough sound to fill a small room that allows several couples to dance along with us. This is a really great way to share music.

4-0 out of 5 stars Surprising Sound!
The Creative Labs TravelSound MP3 has surprisingly good sound for such a little unit. It's a "palm-sized)" one-piece stereo speaker system, little larger than an eyeglass case (WxHxD 6" x 2" x 2.5") but the sound is nearly as good as a small boombox. This unit does a great job in smaller rooms but you'll be disappointed if you try to fill a large room with sound. You do lose most of the low end so the bass is a little anemic. But the mid-range and the high end are crisp and clean.

You can hook up your portable electronic audio equipment like your CD/MP3 player, portable DVD player, even your laptop computer but being able to download MP3/WMA files directly to the unit is a definite PLUS.

It is a little $$$ but it is still a good value.I recommend it to anyone who travels a lot but likes to have decent tunes in their hotel room. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Product
Easily the best mobile DVD player you can buy for the car, short of having an expensive professional system installed.

This unit is also safer than those "in a bag" portable DVD players, which hang on the back of the seat. Imagine what would happen in a car accident with one of those.I wouldn't want to be sitting behind it.
The RCA rests on the seat, and is buckled in with the seatbelt, a much better (and safer) design.

The only downside is there is no battery, but if you are using this for the car, or for a hotel room, you simply don't need one.

4-0 out of 5 stars Could use resume play after power outage
This is a nice LCD DVD player.I like the fact that this operates in DC and AC modes without bulky power adaptors. The cables and remote neatly hide in the small storage compartment. My kids figured out the operation with zero help from me.

The only feature I'd like to see is the ability to resume playback after a power outage. The 12V power plug in my car cuts out when I start the car.Unfortunately, the DVD player insists on starting all over again. This is only a small inconvenience since we use this player primarily for long trips.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Item;poor sound;great customer service
Pros:
Excellent video quality
Very Compact
Nice Features
Supurb costomer service

Cons:
Very poor sound (must
buy headphones to use)

All in all this is an excellent item. The Sound quality is so poor, that I couldnt use this item until I bought a pair of good head phones. The Costomer service at Amazon.com was the best Ive ever seen. The first unit that was sent to me had a problem with the screen(which should be bigger, it was innefective at this size). The LCD display would not light correctly on one side of the screen, so I sent an email to Amazon.com's costomer service center, and right away(within the next day) I revieved and answer. They said it would be fine, to just send them the deffective player, and they would send out a new one(checked over personally by them) ASAP. And I guess they did, because the new item arrived within the next week. Orrigionally I wasnt supposed to recieve the player for another two weeks, so all in all, I recieved the second, working one, before it was predicted that I would get the first one. THANK YOU AMAZON.COM. If you order this product from Amazon.com you will be amazed by the quality of the product and service. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Surprising performance
This unit has surprisingly good features for the discounted price that I paid (sub-$100). Decent audio, light weight, acceptable supplied earbuds, and handy neckstrap + armband made a good package. Pluses are that it can be used to hold data files as well as mp3 as a mass storage device. Also, the FM tuner is pretty good.

128 MB SD card limitation DOES NOT apply on my unit, however it is not explained how to make it function with larger cards. Simply hold the center button down until the unit powers up! For the supplied 128MB card it only takes a couple of seconds, but, for a 1GB card, it takes up to 8 seconds or so, but it will work if you are patient. My guess is that the player has to build a database of files on the card before powering up completely, and the processor is a little slow. 1.128 GB of storage gives a lot of files to listen to during the day.

Cons are that the batteries do not last more than about 10 hours if it includes time consumed by much moving of data to/from the unit with the USB transfer. Also, the latch that keeps the back cover on does not seem to hold too tightly, but I have not had a problem with it, yet.

5-0 out of 5 stars Durable, uncomplicated
Good, durable MP3 player.Center button is easy to use, makes things very simple to move through.Nice display as well. Great for those workouts.

1-0 out of 5 stars I do not like this one at all
I had this music player before, and I have to admit, it's pathetic. The "256MB" it supposedly has on the player is only 128MB. The reason I do not like it is because it had erased all of my music when I didn't even do anything to it.

4-0 out of 5 stars on a scale from 1-10 i'd give it a 7
hmm.. well this was my first mp3 player i ever bought i had no real clue about them but i managed to figure it out relativly fast with the software. with the internan memory you get is only 128mb had about 30 songs on it then i bought the 256mb card and i couldn't access the cards memory i think it was too much for it to handle i think i should have bought the 128mb card for it to work right but anyways long story short it is a good item but when you buy it you can only hold about 30 songs or so and with the card you can put roughly 60 songs on there. long story short it you just need something small to take around with you to hold a few of your personal songs to get it but if your seeking more memory i suggest you just get an ipod. i hope this was helpful, later

1-0 out of 5 stars Not so good....
The button in the middle annoys me.In order to use the back (or up) button, you must push it in just the right spot.It takes me, on average, about three or four tries to get that button to do what I want it to do.It either pauses the song or goes back a few seconds when all I want it to do is go back to the beginning of the song! So annoying.<br /> <br /> I'm taking my product back to Target today to get a refund. It was overpriced anyway. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Good Product
I bought the other version of this product, without the radio at Target (98 dollars, cool deal). Wonderful product and it works really well. Sony i think makes the best electronic products and are the most reasonable when it comes to prices. Minidisc is quite impressive, they look like nothing more then those little floppy disk but store more then CD's which is impressive. One flaw however, they say 80 minutes which is a lie, they store 161. The product is nice, it's not too big and it's not too small. Some MP3 players are too small, this is perfect, you don't have the fear of dropping it and the buttons are the perfect size. And if you don't want to carry it, stick it in your pocket. It is a good deal.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sony MZ-NF520D Net MD Walkman
Just bought one from Amazon yesterday; hope to get it by Thursday (they are sending it via FedEx!!); am excited, very excited.

1-0 out of 5 stars This MD Parade Needs Some Rain
NOTE: THIS IS NOT SO MUCH A REVIEW AS IT IS A WARNING!

Five years ago, I discovered the MiniDisc format. I think that preciously naive time happened before the mp3 format came stomping into the music world and slew tapes, CDs and MiniDiscs with its mighty clawed feet, and then did a dance on their corpses. At that time five years ago I had no computer, so I was thrilled by MDs. The MD was the perfect replacement for the analog cassette; it was versatile, could be erased and reused, and just looked damn cool.
But Amercia missed the MiniDisc greyhound bus to Acceptance, and the poor unsupported format withered and almost died. But, possibly due to the stubbornness of Sony Corporation, MiniDisc was kept alive for Reasons Unknown, even though it was eclipsed by CD-Rs, mp3 players, and even possibly those little individual song player tapes manufactured by Tiger Electronics for pre-teens.
Though I can't say when, exactly, someone in Sony said, "let's try to re-vitalize the MiniDisc by making them able to talk to personal computers!" Perhaps he'd been on an all-day sake binge. It would make sense, because the idea was at least five years past its prime and smelled like rice-wine. So, the magnificent idea to bring MD into the 21st century spread and took hold in Sony, and has trickled down to us, the Playstation and Walkman-buying American public. NetMD was born.
By the time I stopped using MiniDisc format, I had amassed over 50 of the colorful little buggers, full of songs for CDs that I had since parted ways with, and tapes which I wanted to preserve. At least a fourth of my collection was made of songs that I had written and produced myself, from live shows to sound room practices. And here, dear readers, is the reason this product, or any other NetMD product deserves 1 star:

IF YOU OWN MINIDISCS WITH TRACKS RECORDED ON MEDIUMS OTHER THAN A PC, SUCH AS MD PLAYER TO MD PLAYER OR CD TO MD OR ANALOG TO MD, THE SONY SOFTWARE RECOGNIZES IT BUT WILL NOT ALLOW YOU TO TRANSFER THE FILES TO THE COMPUTER. EVEN SONGS YOU WROTE AND LEGALLY OWN YOURSELF ARE NOT CONSIDERED 'TRANSFERABLE' BY NETMD UNLESS THEY WERE FIRST RECORDED USING A PC. YOUR OWN VOICE IS NOT TRANSFERABLE.

I was so mad that the NetMD I purchased for the sole purpse of transferring the music on my MDs to my computer was unable to transfer a single song, I returned it the next day to Best Buy and got my money back.

So, my advice in terms of MiniDisc and especially NetMD - it's over. The ship has sailed. Remember them fondly, or use them as coasters, but don't get into MiniDisc. It's a dead format and a product whose prime was in the previous decade.

5-0 out of 5 stars Small, fun, and full!
I love this mini disc player. I got it for my birthday when I asked for an MP3 player (thinking I'd get an ipod), but I think I like this better! It's so small and compact that even though the songs need to be stored on discs, it isn't a space problem or a problem to carry them around. One disc can hold lots of music, plenty for going to the gym, going for a walk, or just sitting around, so in many cases, you don't need to carry more than one or two discs at a time!

The software is great as well. Easy to use and it's so much fun making my own mixes and getting songs that I love but didn't want to spend the money on to get the whole CD! Now instead of spending $18 on a cd from which I only want 2 or 3 songs, I can purchase just the 3 songs I want for 99 cents each!

I plan on purchasing the arm-band holder for use at the gym and I agree, the headphones that come with it have a short cord and are huge, so I will also be buying my own headphones.

Overall, very small and easy to carry, fun to use, full of music I love, and for those of you to whom this matters, quite a cute player to carry around!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Product - Definitely Recommend It
My husband bought me a Sony minidisc walkman for Christmas last year, because I wanted something that I could use for my work outs.I found this to be perfect for that purpose, because it is small, and skip free. It is very easy to put together your own custom mix of music for whatever purpose, whether it be for the gym or just for relaxing. I can fit close to 70-75 songs (on LP4 mode, I really don't notice much reduced sound quality) on one minidisc. Use the shuffle mode and it's like your own private radio station. You never know what's coming next....a feature thatis especially great for working out.Keeps the boredom out of it.<br />
<br />
So, for Christmas this year, I bought him his own.The only thing that I was somewhat disappointed about was that unlike the MD player he gave me last year, this model doesn't come with the cable that allows you to recharge the player. I don't use batteries in mine. I just plug it back into the wall and recharge it, just like you would a cell phone. Even so, you still get plenty of playing time out of ONE double AA battery. <br />
<br />
The remote control is especially great for ease of use while running, etc.I've heard people mention that they wish it came with a belt clip. The walkman I received and the one I purchased came with an arm band as part of the promotion. Sony has this on their website too.<br />
<br />
As far as the headphones, I would agree that they suck. I went out and bought the Sony headphones that wrap around your ear and have the bud that goes into your ear. Those stay put.<br />
<br />
Overall, I would say this is definitely a quality product I would definitely recommend. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

The RipFlash PLUS is a first-of-its-kind Flash-memory-based combination MP3 player, MP3 recorder, and voice recording device that actually turns analog audio into high-quality MP3 data--without the need for a desktop PC. This means it's possible to record directly from any audio device, such as a portable CD player, record player, tape player, or even radio, into the RipFlash's 128 MB internal storage. It has a Smart Media Card slot for additional memory, and you can also upload and download MP3s traditionally, using a desktop PC and USB cable.

Quick voice messages are a snap using the recorder's internal microphone. A high-quality stereo microphone (not included) will suffice for recording anything from live music to training seminars. The recordings can be played back through the onboard internal speaker, through the included earbud headphones, or through any home or car audio system using the appropriate cables.

The efficient WMA format provides over 30 hours of voice quality or up to four hours of near-CD-quality music. RipFlash can detect the "gap" between the tracks of a CD when recording, so each song on the CD is saved as an easily identifiable individual MP3 file. The unit is supplied with earbuds, a direct recording (line-in) interconnect, a USB cable, CD software, and an arm band/belt case. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Windows-Only, Faulty Software
I bought this gadget to record school talks. I'd bet Pogo
is full of good sound engineers, but not-so-good software
ones.

Pros:
- good voice recording quality, even in bad environments
- relatively nice user interface, once you learn it.
- resistant (I don't use it that much, though)

Cons:
- it's Windows only. I don't really understand Pogo's decision
to make their own driver. The only interaction the gadget
needs from a computer is uploading/downloading files. The
evident solution is to make the device an USB drive. Instead,
the RipFlash obligues you to install (faulty) software,
while precluding its usage from Macs or open-sourced OS.
- software is faulty: when installing the driver, you should
expect your PC to crash. Reboot and things typically will
work, curiously.
- AAA batteries is the wrong solution. I'd love to be able to
recharge this gadget from an USB plug.
- when running out of batteries, it should alarm you. Losing
part of an important talk because you didn't realize the
batteries have just died is a terrible experience.

4-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding product and unsophisticated interface
Functioning as it was intended, as a recorder and player, this product is OUTSTANDING. When recording, one has to remember that the sound level that one is putting in is the one that one gets out: so when using a microphone in the "line-in" -- one has to make certain that one is using a mic (which PoGo sells -- an excellent one at that) which has an adjustable sound sensitivity function. I used RipFlash Plus, with the mic, to record speeches and the sound quality and clarity is really astounding.

Where this product loses a star is in its user-friendliness: it is not a product which shines as something which is either elegant or intuitive (much like a Mercedes motor in a Model T Ford). And with a little bit of patience and ingenuity (such as renaming files using Windows, outside of the software interface), it is definitely a product which one can work with. I highly recommend it for someone who wants to do what it really shines at: recording into Mp3.

There was one reviewer who spoke about converting the Mp3 files to WMA files for saving space -- but at equal bit rates, the WMA were actually LARGER -- besides which, most techies will tell you that when converting from one compressed format to another, one is going to lose quality

BTW, have a look at PoGo's site and you will be surprised at the pricing advantage there

1-0 out of 5 stars BUYER BEWARE!!!!!
I received this product as a Christmas gift. Less than 6 months later, the case began to crumble. The device was never dropped or abused in any way - quite frankly it was only used 2 or 3 times to record attached via line in to a sound board. I had been really impressed with the product until having to deal with Pogo Tech support regarding replacing the item. I was basically told I was a liar and the damage would only occur if the device was abused. I was talked down to, demeaned and they refused to budge on a $15 repair charge. I do not recommend purchasing a product from Pogo unless you consider it a disposable product, not an investment.

1-0 out of 5 stars RipFlash Plus: know what you're getting into
I purchased a RipFlash Plus 256 MP3 player/recorder in June 2004 to record voice interviews. Major flaws in its construction and in its download software mean you are very likely to lose your recordings. To make matters worse, customer support is very resistant to issuing refunds for faulty equipment.

---------------------

It produces decent sound quality, though the recordings have a constant low-level hum in the background.

Two main problems with the unit make it very problematic for capturing recordings:

1) The software provided (and required) to download the sound files to computer over USB is very flakey - sometimes it works, sometimes does not connect, sometimes downloads only part of the sound file but indicates it is "done." This happens on both of the newer Dell computers that I've tried it on. By contrast, all other devices I attach to the USB ports on these same computers exchange files flawlessly.

2) The RipFlash Plus is able to hold a SmartMedia card and record to it. This would seem to be an alternative to downloading through the USB connection - just remove the SmartMedia card, insert it into your computers card reader, and copy off the files. BUT . . . the ejector button on the RipFlash broke the second time I ejected a card, and appears likely to break on any unit. The ejector button pushes the card out with two very tiny brittle plastic tabs. It takes almost nothing to break one (in my case, just ejecting the card did it.) Then, you can't get the card out, or if you do fish it out, you can no longer position it in correctly without the button in place.

Regarding customer support . . . when the unit arrived in the mail, I discovered that they had thrown in a "voice activated TV remote" - at no charge, and without any advance notice - a device they don't sell on their site. I can't imagine anything more useless than that so I tossed it immediately. After obtaining an RMA from them and returning the broken RipFlash, they at first tried to charge me a "restocking" fee for the useless recorder. After I put my credit card company on their case, they finally refunded the full amount. Then, they decided they needed to charge me $40 for the throw-away remote that they had sent unsolicited, so they made a new charge on my card for it.

You might want to consider the options before you decide to try the RipFlash Plus.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great sounding, stable, AAA battery-driven gem.
I loved my player/recorder.It sounded great, recorded well, and had good expandable memory with the SM slot.It even looked slick.A friend bought one, seeing mine.
Only downsides: First, no recording level, so you have to experiment with the external source for line-in and use the built-in (very capable) mic for voice. (and you can adjust the recording quality setting beforehand.Second, the order of the songs are unchangeable, playing in the order that they were downloaded using the software designed to use with the player. Third, relating to the second, it cannot be used for an external flashdrive as it does not have a drag-and-drop feature.
Those faults were minor for the price and quality I experienced while I had mine.Alas, after many months of happy use, mine was stolen.I've tried two other players from other companies since (one a flash-drive, one a hard-drive, both with the external drive feature and fm radio, but both exhibiting poor quality).I should have just bought this one again.
So, consider buying the Ripflash Plus for its AAA battery freedom and $100 price (IPODs are a problem for both these reasons).Once you buy it, enjoy its rich feature set and good sound. And now Pogo! has added a a theft protection service. That doesn't mean you'd get it back if it got stolen, but nice thought anyway, Pogo! ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Bio-crap
Had one, returned in a week. Don't bother. FM tuner literally takes three seconds between each MHZ setting, only goes one way and sounds terrible. Flimsy case design. Frimware will not work with Windows XP, USB interface locks up OS on PC. and to top it off, not supported by manufacturer anymore.

4-0 out of 5 stars Decent Player
I got one of these for christmas. The only thing I DONT like about it is the inability to file songs somehow, ie: alphabetically, by artist, etc. This isnt necessarily a problem now with only 128 mb, but when I expand to 512mb which i plan on doing, im sure it will be frustrating having to scan thru to find the songs i want.
Transferring songs is simple and fast, about 10-15 secs per song. The battery doesnt last long, but im still getting 3-4 hours out of my rechargeables.
As far as the low volume output some people have discussed, I can hear it fine at about 50% volume in low noise rooms, and Ive never turned it up higher than about 80% even when my fiancee has turned the car radio up high to drown out the song I'm singing. And i work on construction sites and dont hear all that well normally.
Overall, i feel a good product for the money.

1-0 out of 5 stars Garbage
I got one of these for Christmas, and I didn't even get to listen to a single song. The user-interface for the FM tuner did not work very well, so I followed the manual's instructions to do a firmware upgrade. I formatted as per the manual, and now the player is dead. Complete waste of money IMHO.

3-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good Player
I got this mp3 player for christmas and i have to say that it has served its purpose so far. At first i wanted to get the virgin player but once i found out that i wont need that much memory i opted out of for the biomorph. The 126mb was good enough for me because i listen to the same 20 songs for about a month untill i change them anyway. But, for others you can add addtional memory. The directions will fool for about a day but in all actuality it installs itself. Some down falls are the accesorries, the head-pieces are too big and it doesnt get that loud, the case is shabby and so is the armband. Also, after a day and a half you will find yourself changing the aaa battery. Overall, its a pretty good player.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't buy this Mp3 player!!!!!
This mp3 player sucks. No wonder it is so cheap. Today was my first day with it and it screwed up on me. The instructions on the thing are confusing and you have a hard time getting the thing to connect to your computer so you can download songs. It tells you to "reformat" the mp3 thing and I did exactly what it told me to do to reformat it and it gave me an error message the next time I powered it on and it shut down. Now it won't stay on. My advice YOU should TAKE: DO NOT BUY THIS MP3 PLAYER!!!!!!!!!!! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars For good and bad, not an iPod
I bought my Lyra in late '03/early '04 when they first came out. The physical size of the player in relation to the memory was an attraction (most players of this size were 128 or 256 MB), as was the player's robustness. Mine has been dropped and beaten and generally treated poorly (because of the size and unobtrusiveness, it's perfect for sports), and I have yet to have a problem. I've similarly had no problems with battery life.

With a PC, it's simpler to use than an iPod - files can be copied just using Windows Explorer. It also supports Windows Licensing, for which files must be transferred (I've used Windows MediaPlayer). Then the player must be "profiled", which is a simple right click function.

The controls are as simple as possible on a device of this size. They're relatively intuitive (though obviously small) and the screen is clear and easy to read.

Support from RCA/Thompson seems to be suspect, but other than downloading software updates, I have yet to use it.

Overall, the Lyra isn't slickly packaged and doesn't come with white headphones. It's just a simple and tough little player.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good while it lasted...but it was a short honeymoon
It worked at first, software was easy enough to use, and the size was great. After about a year it would no longer play nicely with my PC -- I couldn't add or remove any music. I called RCA tech support and told them I had already tried uninstalling/reinstalling the latest software and they said, "Well, you've already done all of the tech support yourself. You have passed the 1-year warranty, thank you, ". What a load of garbage. Uninstall/reinstall is the extent of their ideas?? No more RCA products for me.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not worth consideration
This is not a product worth a first look .Despite it's novelty of size (which is no longer a novelty), the Lyra is not a good buy.Cheap plastic construction made for a damaged player with a single drop on low pile carpet.

There are plenty of better products out there.

1-0 out of 5 stars Extremely dissapointing!
At first, I was thrilled to find an mp3 player for the RCA Lyra's price and capacity, and it worked great when I began using it. However, only a few weeks afterwards, almost all of the songs began to skip, and about a month after that, I had difficulty just trying to turn it on! Now, just FIVE MONTHS after buying it, the harddrive has completely crashed! Now I can't use this player at all, and I've lost $150! Apparently, I am NOT the only one who has suffered these problems, as most everyone who has held onto this player for an extended period of time has been confronted with harddrive problems.

My advice: STAY CLEAR! While it's a good bargain, you'll end up wasting your time and (if you didn't fill out the warranty info, like me.) your money.

1-0 out of 5 stars Bunk!
It would change modes while transfering and creat an error. After a system restore it is possible music files changed and would not play and froz MP3 Player. After battery drain it worked but computer would not connect to it. Check on two other computers at parents house and same thing. Right on time before warranty. Lucky! ... Read more
