After about two hours and just before I chucked the thing out the window and bought an iPod, I went to the Lyra website, downloaded the drivers for the card drive & the drivers for Windows Media player & everything worked. The machine is simple to use now that everything is talking to everything else. The interface is relatively intuitive. Would I choose this over the Rio or the iPod?I didn't even know about the Lyra before receiving it as a gift so I don't know.I was leaning toward the iPod.The Lyra seems to work fine and it suits my needs.I would have seriously considered this player based on the price and features. I can recommend this player if it can be had at a low enough price.

Based on my experience of the few weeks while it was still in my hands, my impression of this player is generally positive. The sound quality is good. I didn't look at the watch, but battery life was totally decent. The antiskip protection has passed several tests which have probably been more strenuous than real-life situations. And unless you're a geek, this player has pretty much all the features that you will need. I bought it last year, it's still being used and I haven't heard complaints so far. There are a few things about it that I didn't like. I will mention them in order of their importance. First, the lack of the fast forward and rewind functions while playing MP3s. I knew about it from the manual, prior to purchase, but I underestimated how important these functions are. It may vary with your listening habits, but if you listen to audiobooks or if you find yourself frequently skipping back and forth in a music track, this is not the player for you. Again, it only applies to MP3. Fast forward and rewind does work for audio CDs. Another issue was the occasional overlapping between the end of one track and the beginning of the next when playing MP3s, but this happened randomly and it may have something to do with the quality of the CD. A shortcoming that seems to be common to many CD-MP3 players are the "clicks" presumably generated by the buffering/antiskip algorithms. This player makes no exception. The clicks are there, very weak but still audible. They tend to occur when silence follows sound abruptly. If you pay attention, you will hear them at the end of music tracks. You may notice them if you listen to voice recordings even without paying attention. But you may not care about this. Audiophiles probably don't expect much from a portable player. The browsing of MP3 CDs is limited to jumping by track or by folder/album. CDs with deep directory trees are not easy to browse, but otherwise you'll be fine. The design is okay, but there's nothing "slick" about it. A little dull and bulky, actually. No back light on the LCD display, which makes it harder to use in the dark. The included headphones have a wide spectrum, but they accentuate lower frequencies, which I find unnecessary, since the player itself has a bass-enhancing mode. However, many people like that, and if you don't, you can always replace the headphones.
This CD player is amazing for one simple reason:you can fit up to 15-17 CDs worth of music on it.I am fairly experienced with computers--I used Windows Media Player to 'rip' songs from 11 CDs from my CD collection, then burned them to ONE CD.Windows Media Player was able to automatically download song/album information using CDDB--navigating from CD to CD and within each virtual CD is a breeze.Now--I *have* put my MP3s onto a CD and I will acknowledge that many, many mp3s will fit onto a single CD.However, I am amazed that so many MORE WMAs will fit onto the same CD.The manual recommends ripping songs at 96kbps and this is fine for me.I notice no sound degradation at all. The sound is very good.(...) This is a very cool piece of technology and I am very pleased with the sound--but I am so over-the-edge happy about the WMA format and functionality. This is a must-get.
Somethings you just need to see and buy in a store to learn all the hidden facts, a lesson learned for me. I hope this helps you.
One major feature that's lacking is fast-forwarding on MP3 CD's -- you can only do this on audio CD's, as holding down the seek buttons just move you up and down the folders in data CD's.But my only other complaint would be the lack of a LCD backlight -- it's really difficult to figure out what I'm doing in the dark, though the button configuration is still intuitive.I'd also have prefered a scrolling (vs. the button-based) volume control, but that's not all that important either. The playback of MP3's and WMA's is useful, though if you have no use for the latter just save yourself some money and get the MP70 (unless you like the concentric ring design of the MP80 to the MP70's blue gradient). There are no problems with sound, a hold button exists, skipping has never happened to me, having ID3 tags is nice, and read time is good. Priced on the lower end of MP3 CD players, I'd say this one is a good buy, but I'd shop around a little more to make sure you get the features you want. There's no remote or FM tuner on this one, and some players boast even higher battery lives. But if all you need is a reliable MP3 CD player that'll play everything on it reasonably conveniently (as long as you don't need to see song info in the dark or be able to search within an MP3 track), this may be the one you're looking for.

Camera: As a 2 Megapixel camera, I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of the pictures. This won't replace a dedicated camera, but as a device you can always have with you, it does a good job. Its primrary limitations are the very short range of the flash (making group photos tougher than you would like) and the lack of zoom (it's a fixed-focal length lens set at a pretty wide angle). MP3 Player: First the bad news - you have to use the supplied software to upload music to be played. The Jukebox software "locks" your music in an attempt to add some sort of digital rights management. Which means if you already have a large library of encoded music, you still have a slow import process to go through before you can put music on the device. Painful and unnecessary. However, the quality of the playback is good. I wish the cord on the headphones was longer. If you put a large SD card in this, you can have a 512mb MP3 player that is also a decent camera for not much more than a 256mb dedicated MP3 player. Video recorder: This is pretty nominal. Resolution is fixed at 320x240 with a fixed (no zoom) wide angle lens. And you cannot move very quickly or the image immediately blurs. So it's OK as a quick use item and marginally better than the short video functions on most digital cameras. But don't buy this for its video ability. Overall pros and cons.... Pros: Great form factor and design. Like the iPod, this is a device you just have to hold in your hands to enjoy fully. It is a pleasure and a delight (it is also smaller than the iPod!). It is really impossible to convey how petite, yet right-sized it is without seeing it in person. Camera is better than you expect and MP3 playback is decent. Cons: At less then $200, this would be a deal. At current prices, it is slightly steep. Since they only throw in an 8 Mb SD card, count on getting a 128/256 Mb card yourself for photos/music (another $60-120). Or even 512 Mb if you want to do video capture. But be aware that the video mode is pretty nominal. The lack of any optical zoom hurts as well. Overall, I would recommend to those lookng for a small, all-in-one device. Particularly if you already have invested in SD cards for other devices. Shop around and aim for as close to $250 as possible.
A couple problems I have with it are that the lens rotates so you can take a pic of yourself....but the flash does not rotate with the lens.So if you are in a poorly lit area and want to take a pic of yourself, all the benefits of having a rotating lens are lost. This is only a minor problem to me, but I think it is poor design. The second problem is that the SD card it comes with is small...very small.8mb.Is that some kind of joke? Most digital cameras come with small memory cards, but they are promoting this thing as a multi function device: camera, camcorder, mp3 player. My Panasonic mp3 player came with a 64mb card, why does this come with only 8mb?It is supposed to be an mp3 player too. They might as well have not included any memory with this camera.I was lucky that I bought it while Panasonic was having a promotion and they sent me a free 128mb card.Which only took about 1 week to arrive, not 6-8 like they said. I only use the camera function, so I cannot comment on the other functions, but overall I am happy with it.However I would not want this to be my only camera. When I go on a trip or someplace where I know I will be taking a lot of pics I will bring a different camera, as this camera is only 2mp and does not have an optical zoom.If you want a small camera you can carry with you at all times then this one is good.If small size is not the most important thing to you, then you should look at something else.
Music player function is very good. ... Read more

The first one I bought broke right away while I was transferring files (granted, I didn't read the manual first, but you really shouldn't need to - you should be able to plug in and go, especially considering there is no software to install). I had no problem with Win XP recognizing it as a removable drive, but I think what happened was that I tried dragging over a folder with-in another folder (the player only supports 1 level of folders, and I had mine set up //artist/album/file.mp3). Windows sees this as a drive, so as far as Windows is concerned there should be no problem in creating multiple folders. But, instead of giving an error, the transfer just crashed and the unit would not respond.Even after multiple attempts at removing the battery to reset it, it still would not respond. Not a good start. So I returned it and got another. This time I made sure that my files were only one folder deep (aside: since this player does not "see" folders really, it treats them as playlists. for a unit that proudly displays it's drag-and-drop capabilities on it's package, it seems odd that it doesn't support a folder view. i haven't tried non-music files, given how easily it killed the system by just trying to create a third level of folders. also, just like first generation mp3 players, if you want your songs to play in a particular order, you had better name them that way, as the manual suggests, by add "001","002", etc to the begining of the file/folder.) Figuring out how the navigation works was a chore.Much of my time was spent in trial-and-error trying to figure out how to navigate around this thing (again, should you really need to read a manual just to figure out how to play a song?this is ridiculous!) Which brings us to my biggest complaint: THE SCREEN IS UPSIDE-DOWN!!! Seriously. What I imagine happened was that they put it all together, and some tester said that the buttons should be on top of the unit instead of the bottom, so instead of redesigning it, they just flipped the screen. This is apparent because the buttons are BACKWARDS!! That doesn't make sense?OK, let me explain.Normally, being from an an engligh speaking/reading country, you assume that, given two buttons, the one one the left would be "back" and the one on the right would be "forward" (picture the navigation buttons on any vcr, tape player, dvd, cd... ok, pretty much anything that has navigation buttons). This is not the case with this unit.I constantly find myself going back when i want to go forward, lowering the volume when i want to raise it, etc. It's extremely frustrating and annoying. Another hint that they just flipped the screen is that the writing on the back of the unit is upside-down compared to the screen (but, if you turn the unit over, at least the buttons make sense.you just can't see what's going on on the screen). Speaking of the screen. It's easy enough to read, but holds hardly any info on it.4 lines with a max of 12 characters each (and that's one line for the name of the song, one line for the folder/playlist, one line for the timeframe, and the last line for system settings, like battery level, etc.so really it's just two lines with a max of twelve chars). It's also very low res compared to other current generation mp3 players i've used. The voice recorder seemed to work well enough, but given how poorly designed everything on this unit is, I'm not even going to test that or any other feature any further. This is definitly not worth it, even at the fairly low price.iRiver, iRock, Rio, and a few others have similarly priced units that, although not perfect, are worlds ahead of this thing. if this would have come out 4 years ago it would have been pretty good.but given it's current competition, this is about as bad as it gets. ... So, I call what they call Customer Service and find that they won't give me any advice whatever until I FAX in a copy of my shipping document from Amazon and another sheet with a magic number on it from within the extended service package. They say that Amazon is not an authorized reseller and that they cannot check my order and date of sale from Amazon. I explain that I do not have a FAX machine, and that I will go send the stuff in a few days when I feel like walking that far using my crutches. I think that it is probably a good product, but if you are in any way handicapped and it is not convenient for you to run around to get their service, I recommend not buying it.
No FireWire port? That's a problem, because you need to connect the iPod to a FireWire-equipped Mac in order to get tunes onto it.It takes about 5 seconds to transfer an average track - blazing fast! You can put your whole library on here in less than an hour, using the easy drag-and-drop iTunes software. And now, you can even use your iPod to play back tunes purchased from Apple's online music store, in the high-quality AAC format! I get about 2 hours per charge (I play high volume to drown out subway noise), and my iPod is sturdy enough to go biking with no skips.I don't bother using the wired remote or the belt clip; but I do use a car adapter to get my tunes playing over my car's stereo system! And I occasionally use the iPod as a portable hard disk as well!Fits right in my pocket! So, if you want maximum cool and maximum tunes, look no further! ... Read more
