Big problems with read errors
For perfect DVDs, this drive is fast and smooth.However, when it encounters a bad block on a DVD, it spends over a minute fiddling with itself trying to read that precious block.Meanwhile, the movie is frozen.This makes it almost unusable for DVD playback.I broke a brand new Incredibles DVD from its case, and that played perfectly.But any DVD that has the slightest imperfection is a problem.

I haven't tested the recording capability.I was hoping to buy only 1 drive for both playback and recording.This one doesn't fit the bill.

Reliable and Mac Friendly!
I recently purchased this Iomega burner to burn DVDs from my Mac ibook G4 (purchased in Jan 2004). Right out of the box, this drive was ready to go to work.Thus far, I am very pleased with my purchase.

Using third party sharware (available on www.mac.com) and Roxio Popcorn, I find it very easy to burn DVDs using my mac laptop.I did not install and presently do not use any of the programs provided by Iomega.Using other programs I have experienced very few errors, so I consider it reliable after using it to burn roughly 25 disks.I have not tried to burn data disks or record from a VCR.

With my processor speed, it takes about 20-30 minutes to burn and finalize a 4.7GB DVD-R.Having discussed this product with friends - processor speed will greatly impact the time it takes to burn a DVD.A friend with an older Mac Powerbook (at least 3yrs old) reports that it can take up to 2 hours to burn a disk, whereas another friend with a G4 ibook (only a few months old) says that he can burn a disk in 15 minutes or less.If you have an older computer, it may be worthwhile to upgrade the entire system before purchasing a drive like this one.

The drive weighs less than I expected - so it is compact and portable, if you wanted to take it somewhere or carry it in your backpack.By comparison,it weighs roughly half of the weight of my La Cie external harddrive.

When it's copying a disk, it does "hum," but the sound is by no means bothersome.

Additionally, there are some maufacturer's rebates floating around on the web (Spring 2005) and the price is steadily dropping on Amazon and elsewhere.I think this is a solid buy and Mac-users, don't fear, this drive will work.

iomega products - always more hype than performance
I've always been a sucker for the iomega/bernoulli promise: a little hardware device with swappable media and big storage.

But true to form, this drive delivers a large bill of goods and is short on (third party) software fulfillment.

It did install nicely, although there are a updates to apply.The DVD reads smoothly over a network - perhaps due to the slow USB speed.The "Hot Burn" software makes an adequate cd/dvd data disk.But what frys me is the DVD movie creation software - it will not install at all -- says it wants windows media player 7.1 or greater -- is the top issue on the support website -- they have a lame fix and involves unstalling media player then reinstalling an earlier version.Right!

I also fell for the "REV" drive - boy does it's backup software bite the big one!

If you just want hardware to use folder options with you will be fine.I wish iomega wouldn't lo-ball with their third party included software.

This USB DVD burner 16X (33068) is made by Lite-On !
I am testing this USB DVD burner after receiving 3 days. Be aware of this USB drive if you intend to use your owned solfware to burn DVD. Because you sometimes need to use a different burning DVD solfware to match with every entire drive on your PC's, this drive is easy to be hung up due to the speed of its USB 2.0 connection and its microcode. Everytime it happens to be hung up, you have to unplug the AC connector at back of PC. This is a worse case to be avoid in multiple disconnection of the main power plug. About double layer! Only one format on every PC is a basic concept of application. Two formats between single and double layer can not be used on the same PC for reading and writing on both single and double layer drives. For example, the format of a disk making from a single layer drive can not be used on a drive of double layer. Therefore, the burning DVD solfwares are very different between the old and new drives.
Other words, this drive is made by Lite-On company. It is an OEM product.
So far during testing, its drive is recognized by Window XP right away because it is certified by the big PC Window operation. The speed is of course slower than its spec due to USB connnection.
Finally the hung up problem is very tough for every company that is making a USB 2.0 DVD burner. This hung-up depends on the mother board, the speed of CPU and layout/design of each PC company. So its microcode drive needs to be updated time by time for improving its operation if its company wants to do so.

After 9 days of testing, the pros and cons are as follow.
PROS.
_Read and Write movie files are faster than any 16X internal drive on P4 533FSB and 800FSB of desktop.
_R/W is also fast enough at = or >1.6GHz on Centrino laptop.
_Write compress movie files without any errors and its format (compress file on a single layer) is played smoothly on any progressive scan DVD player.

CONS.
_R/W mode is very slow on P4 Mobile 2.0GHZ 400FSB on laptop.
_Time response to CPU through USB 2.0 is slow as easy to be hung up if mouse button is pressed during this burner on its incomplete stage. This means hitting mouse button too fast should get hung-up.
_USB 1.1 is not acceptable to play any movie on this burner.
_Removing USB connector without stopping UBS bus should get hung-up.

Great Drive!
I have had the drive for one month and it is a good drive. Here is some advice that may help you with the drive.

Go to the Pioneer main site and download the firmware update. Make sure you read the instructions prior to the download.

Here is some very helpful advice for those who dont know how to back up their DVD's that they have bought.

1. Go to www.doom9.org and download DVD decrypter and DVD Shrink
. These are both free downloads and great programs that you can make copies of DVD's with.
2. Go to www.allmediaoutlet.com and purchase Ritek dvd's, these are a real good brand and only cost 21.50 for 50. It is a great site for purchasing all your media needs.
3. Look up www.generetic.org and join for $12.00 per year to make DVD covers. Read instructions from this site and it will tell you how to download the pictures using another program.
4. Make sure you only make copies of things that you legally bought. The fine is huge if you get caught doing this illegally.

One of the Few SATA DVD Writers Around
As far as I can tell, Plextor seems to be the only company making SATA DVD writers.This PX-716SA, and its PX-712SA little brother are the only options I know of.I don't know why other companies don't make these writers with SATA connections.It's not the data transfer speed that I'm interested in (irrelevant for these devices).It's just the convenience of those small SATA data connectors (that and the ability to turn off the PATA side of my disk controller).The only thing that worries me about the 716SA is the lack of a digital audio out SPDIF connector.That connector is used to directly transfer digital audio from CDs to the sound card without having to go through the system bus.Without it, the system has to handle the load.I don't know if will be a problem since I hardly ever use that function.But, still, it worries me.Time will tell.

Update:After using the drive for a while to play music CDs, I'll have to say that the lack of that SPDIF connector makes no difference:the music plays just fine.

For those interested, I installed the drive as follows into my XP SP2 system:

- Important first steps:I copied the serial number from the top of the drive and then backed up all my data.
- To ensure no problems with software, I uninstalled my CD/DVD writing software (Ahead Nero Burning ROM 5.5.10.56) from Start | Control Panel | Add or Remove Programs.It wasn't necessary, but I then rebooted.
- For the hardware, I turned off the computer, opened it up, disconnected my existing CD drive from power, sound card, and IDE port.I then unscrewed and removed the drive.
- To add the new drive, I used the provided power cable adapter to convert a 4-pin power lead to the SATA 15-pin lead and plugged that into the drive (it's keyed so it only goes in one way).I used the provided 7-pin SATA interface cable to connect the drive to the second SATA interface (also keyed) on my motherboard (MSI 865PE-Neo2-FIS2R).Using the four provided screws, I screwed the drive into my computer case and closed everything up.
- When I started the computer, the first thing I did was press the DELETE key to enter its AMI BIOS setup.Since I no longer used a PATA drive, I went to Ingegrated Peripherals | On-Chip IDE Configuration and changed the ATA Configuration from "P-ATA + S-ATA" to "S-ATA only" and the On-Chip ATA(s) Operate Mode from "Legacy Mode" to "Native Mode" (possible because XP natively supports the interface).Everything else stayed the same.I did a Save & Exit and let the computer boot into Windows.
- I expected Windows to tell me it had found new hardware.That didn't happen.I went to Start | Control Panel | System | Hardware | Device Manager and saw that the new drive was there (labeled as a PX-716A (not SA)).It also appeared to be running version 1.07 firmware.Plextor's site has 1.08 firmware, so I downloaded and installed it (that software confirmed the drive had 1.07 firmware).Afterward, I had to reboot.
- After booting, I put the provided DVD into the drive and, from its menu, registered the software (you need the serial number from the top of the drive (it was also on my packing slip and on the box)).
- According to that menu, the PlexTools Professional software was 2.17.Plextor's site has version 2.23, so I downloaded and tried to install it.It wanted a previous version to update.So, I cancelled that installation and installed what came on the DVD (which turned out to be 2.20, not 2.17).I rebooted and installed the 2.23 update.Again, I had to reboot afterward.
- The drive comes with Roxio's Easy Media Creator 7 Basic software (which does all kinds of DVD authoring stuff I don't need) and DVDMax Player 2 (which I might use later).I didn't bother installing them.I just re-installed my Nero Burning ROM 5.5.10.56 and did a couple of backups.I only had some 8x single-layer DVD media on hand, so I could "only" back up 4.7 GB at half the speed the drive is capable of.But, that worked fine.At some point, I'll try some 16x media (for speed) and some double-layer media (for capacity -- 8.5 GB).

So far, I'm very pleased with the drive.I rate it as four stars out of five.If it had that SPDIF connector and a less "bloated" CD/DVD writing software package, I'd probably give it five stars out of five. ... Read more

Incompatibile with AOL
The included software, RecordNow, has some problems to work with AOL.I have several DVD+R discs damaged when these conditions are all true:

1. AOL is connected
2. RecordNow is burning DVD.
3. Using Laptop and the Windows "Close the lid of my laptop computer" option is set to "None".
4. Close the lid.

This problem is definitely repeatbale.

SONY's star is sinking
I bought this product based on SONY's reputation, and first I was quite pleased. But after 4 month it was not able to burn any CD anymore. And this is similar to other SONY products I bought (DVD player etc). SONY, do something to increase the quality of your products. Until this is done, I go for other brands.

Do not buy, bad quality, bad service
Sony has pretty good reputation for consumer products, but this drive has been bad news!The first drive was dead on arrival.The second drive died a month later only after burning 10 CD-Rs and less than 5 DVD-Rs.

Try getting an RMA...I had to deal with the support center for 3 days, first to get told to run a drive check utility, wait 24 hours for them to process, then try to get an RMA.THATS 3 days just to get an RMA!!!!Oh! The best part is they wanted another drive check with a firmware upgrade to 2.1c from 2.1a, that's another 24 hours.

All said, I have spent over 3 months without really using this drive given the time it had to ship UPS ground!

If you value your time...stay away from this deal.

Worst DVD RW experience ever!
I was suckered into purchasing this unit because of the SONY reputation.A huge mistake!The unit arrived DOA, SONY's anti-customer service people are programmed to say: "You agreed to the terms of the warranty when you opened the box, you must return it to us at your cost and we will fix it if required, it will take 6 - 8 weeks."What a great way to treat a customer - NOT!I recommend the PLEXTOR 712UF instead, great drive, great price, and they still appreciate their customers.

Great machine,great price.
I had been very reluctant about buying a dvd burner for quite awhile.The technology didn't quite seen mature considering all the complaints with format wars,compatability issues,disc problems ect...I finally took the plunge on a wing and a prayer when I saw this recorder and it's price.I was pleasantly surprised at how easy the 530UL was to install and use.The included software is pretty standard and mediocre,but it gets the job done.There are better down-loadable freeware programs on the net though.
Over the last 2 months,I have made over 50 DVD+R's (I haven't tried making any -R's yet..) without a single glitch as of yet.I have been using Memorex 4X discs with this burner and they work perfectly.Amazon has good deals on bulk amounts of these discs in case you want to stockpile....I've had no problems playing them on a JVC DVD player that is about 3 years old or a brand new Pioneer model.
Overall I am more than pleased with my purchase.The only little glitch is psychological:not long after buying this,Sony introduced the 700UL which is a new dual layer burner.If I had known about it,I may have waited to purchase it instead.It's a bit aggravating,but then again that's the marketplace.Get rid of the older technology at a lower price and charge a premium for the new.That's the chance you take when you are an early adopter.

not as useful as I'd hoped
I picked up one of these thinking I'd have any easy way to copy my band's demos and make our own CDr albums, but to burn without multiple unlistenable errors you have to copy slow at 4x and I have had problems even with that. The unit is being returned to the manufacturer for warranty service - they have been responsive - so hopefully it is just an easy repair.(Sep 13, 04)

Alera replaced the writer and upgraded the firmware. So far it seems to have corrected the problem!Hopefully I can get some use out of this now without worrying about errors, in which case, this rocks... (Oct 15, 04)

Fast Service
The customers service and quality of service was excellent.I received the order the same day that it was esimated to be shipped.Previous to my order, I read consumer reports that provided positive reviews about the hardware and negative reports about the software that came with it.I had purchased new software and had no problems.

TDK Supports Their Products
I bought the TDK DVD drive and it was not able to recognize DVD+RW media after writing to the media one time. (DVD+R media worked fine.) This problem had existed since I purchased the drive. I "chatted" with tech support and they agreed that it was a hardware problem with the drive. When I called tech support for an RMA number, they informed me that I was past the warranty period (by a couple of months). I requested they cover the repair anyway as a gesture of goodwill, since the drive had never worked properly. THEY AGREED TO REPAIR THE DRIVE! Now that is what I call great support. Had the drive failed after the warranty period expired, it would not be right for anyone to expect TDK to repair the product. As it is, I feel that TDK has shown incredible integrity and gone above and beyond the call of duty. Hat's off to TDK!

The drive is a solid performer and installs easily. I suggest using Nero with this drive rather than the bundled software.

Horrible Dvd burner, great if you want nothing but COASTERS!
This dvd burner is horrible, I had nothing but problems with it.I bought this thinking it was the best but it fell very short of my expectations after the second burn.Also the software is garbage and you are better off using Dvd shrink (which is free software) and Nero to burn .

Most of the problems being with dvd-r disks.I used the two free dvd+r disk fine but it was downhill after that.I bought a stack of 10 tdk dvd-r (dvd-r runs on all of the dvd players in our house and dvd+r doesn't), it encoded just fine, started to burn for a few minutes and then the burner would freeze up and a error message would pop up on the screen.After a few more coasters, I called TDK and they tried to say it was my computers fault, I informed then my computer was brand new and then they said it was the burner driver that needed to be updated.I updated the driver on their website, yet this still did not fix the problem,I had an even larger stack of coasters by then and said forget it, I will be broke with no movies to speak for it before I get this thing working.I returned it and bought the external 8x Plextor px-708uf and have been happy ever since, and have burned over 50 copies of my movies with no coasters!If you want a burner that gives you nothing but hassle, headaches and a stack of coasters for your drinks by all means waster your money on this.If you want a great dvd burner take a closer look at the Plextor 8x.

Lost a star for bad software
This DVD burner comes with Roxio's Easy CD and DVD Creator software. While the software is very easy to follow, the DVDs I produced were choppy and, most importantly, HAD NO SOUND. I checked with Roxio and indeed they have a fix for the sound problem, but it doesn't work (for me at least). While at the Roxio site I saw many, many complaints about this software.

The burner itself has functioned great and set up easily. I think once I find a usable software program to work with it I'll be very happy with the product.

If you've been waiting to buy...you can stop
I've been watching the price of external DVD writers for over a year. This particular item has dropped from over $400 to a little more than $200 (with a current $30 TDK rebate and careful comparison shopping --not neccesarily via Amazon) during that time. It has many positive points to recommend it, and only a few minor issues.
Strenghts:
(1) The external option is a blessing if you are not comfortable with --or simply don't want to spend the time-- messing around inside your computer. Even though my currrent desktop is homebuilt and I'm fine with working inside the case, both of my IDE controller "master" settings are already dedicated (one to the hard drive, one to an existing CD-RW. The latter is capability I'll want to retain for a while longer).
(2) The presence of bothUSB 2.0 and FireWire interfaces adds obvious flexibility to this unit. Since the data transfer rates are nearly the same, this is a matter of personal preference (unless you only have one type available on your computer, of course).
(3) The ability to write in both DVD+RW and DVD-RW formats spares consumers any painful -and possibly regretable-- "vhs vs. beta" type decisions as this market segment matures.
(4) This unit shipped with a surprisingly good printed users manual for both hardware and software operation.
(5) Worked great first time out of the box. Extensive data backups of up to 4.7 GB on a single DVD....how cool is that!
Nitpicks:
(1) The CD drawer operation is a little on the noisy side.
(2) Personal preference issue: The included burning software is Roxio's EZ CD Creator. I prefer Ahead Software's Nero package based on a couple years of experience with both. Your mileage and user experience may vary, of course. ... Read more

Works perfectly
This is my first experience with a DVD Writer, so the one star review really made me think twice about buying this product. I checked some other product reviews online and they were good, so I went on and bought this model, having been pleased with other Iomega products.It installed perfectly and so far everything I've tried to do has worked fine. I am very pleased with how easy it is to use. No doubt it will be obvious to most people since it is in the title, but you do need to have the USB 2.0 connection (it does not work with the earlier USB version).

Not recommended
I bought this device and it failed to work with my standard Dell laptop running Windows XP.After various attempts by the Iomega help line to get it to work (they tried), they admitted it had a problem and told me to wait whilst they shipped a new one.No way did I want risk wasting more time with a similar drive. So I replaced it for a Philips (8x series) and that worked first time. The Philips uses Nero software and they work well togther. ... Read more

Too much product, not enough info.
I purchaced this drive for two reasons. I needed an external writing drive for my laptop, and I wanted to transfer VHS tapes to DVD. As an external drive, it seems to be a solid, well-built(although slightly costly) drive. I was very disappointed at it's ability to transfer VHS to DVD though. After installing the software and reading the manual, I found out that I needed to buy an additional video capture card. The really big problem there is that most cards on the market transfer analog video on your internal drive, making the external writer completely unnecessary. My advice would be to only buy this as a primary writing drive, of which there are equally good and less expensive models out there. If I had to do it over, that would have been my course.

Product works....
No problems so far -- having being using it for the past few months. UsingRoxio Easy Media Creatorinstead of Iomega's software. Also received Ghost though I have not tested it out. Also unable to use DVD+RW. For some reason, these DVD are not readable on most DVD drives. Not sure if this is a Iomega drive issues. In any case, successfully used it with Win 2K and XP.

(...), it is well worth it's price. Just 3 stars for "poor" propriety software package.

I'm happy with it...
The avgerage Amazon.com rating was higher when I purchased this drive (so was the price).It turns out it works just fine with my Windows XP PC.I purchased Roxio Easy Media Creator 7.0 also which picks up the drive with no problems.The drive is also compatable with Mac OS 10.2.7 or newer using the CharisMac Discribe software.

Painful
I'm really trying to make it work with this burner.After hours and hours of attempted DVD-R burning with the 4x model and 10+ chat's with Iomega support, the support team realized the problem might be my drive.I received the 8x model as a replacement and am having similar problems burning.I know it is not a machine specific problem since a TDK external drive burns no problem.I would never wish the amount of time I have wasted troubleshooting and $$'s spent on failed DVD-R burns on anyone. ...
