1-0 out of 5 stars Don't purchase from mobileplanet!!!
MobilePlanet, Inc. ,

My wife purchased the disc Steno CP200 (MP500251) as a Christmas gift for me from MobilePlanet, Inc. The remote control which came with the unit did not work. I have made several attempts to contact your office by phone. I was put on hold for hours on end even though the message on play on your technical support line keeps repearing that I am first on on line. I have written several emails to your office without getting a response.

I am disappointed with your service and will be posting a review of your store on Amazon. com where the equipment was purchased.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Gizmo!
Worked flawlessly straight out of the box & without reading the manual. VERY FAST even in "secure" mode, which verifies the data. Good disc spanning technology when inserting cards that have more data than a CD can hold. It burned & verified a 1GB CF card (40x) to 2 CD's in about 10 minutes, and that's the slow mode. Be aware that my unit did not read either pictures or movies (MPEG-1) from my SanDisk memory stick pro, but it did read our Sony memory stick pro with the exact same file types as well as various PDA files no problem. It keeps on writing sessions until CD is full, so far no misburns or anything. The TV interface is a little dull and "clunky" and my 8Mpixel images take some time to load but that's not a big deal. Plays DVD's and music CD's although I haven't tried MP3 discs. The manual mentions a car (cigarette lighter) adapter that is not in the box, and it's too bad they didn't provide a carrying case. Still; this little machine seems extremely trustworthy and will help me out very effectively.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best little unit.....ever!
No problems, at all.Seems to work flawlessly, with a neat little lcd display screen that makes everything nice and easy.

I'd recommend this unit to any traveller.

BUY THIS PRODUCT!!! I was once a skeptic of the reliability of any portable burner...but no longer! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars False Advertising
I bought this drive from my local CompUSA for two reasons: I needed to backup my files, and I thought it would be cool to watch DVD movies on my Mac. The software for the DVD player was supposed to be included, right?? Wrong. Iomega does not offer software for the DVD player, but they didn't bother to say this on the box.

Here is the software compatibility list that I found in the user manual:

Iomega® HotBurn® Pro (PC users)
Charismac™ Discribe™ (Mac users)
Iomega® Automatic Backup (PC only)
Sonic CinePlayer™ (PC only)
MusicMatch® Jukebox™ (PC/Mac)
Adobe® PhotoShop® Album SE (PC only)

I'm giving this drive a 3-star rating because my experience with the CD-burner was great. The software installation was a snap, and it took about a minute to burn 350MB on a CD.

Even though I accomplished my original goal, I would not recommend this product to Mac users. In fact, I wish I had checked on Amazon before I did.

3-0 out of 5 stars DVD support on Macintosh less than sterling
For a product that is supposed to support PCs and Macintosh you would think that hardware limitation for DVD would be spelled out but no such luck. While the CD-RW works reasonablly well it does take a little getting use to.However the DVD part is where this drive has the biggest problems.

First Apple's DVD Player does not work on external drives and while the box said it supports MacOS X there is no alterernative DVD player provided for the Mac, so you have to find one. Then there are performance issues. Even with a USB 2.0 PCI card in my G3/430 512 MB B&W Mac DVD audio and video were ridiculously choppy and when I compred performance to the built in USB 1.1 ports I found the drive performing exactly the same way and little research showed the bottle neck to be in the video card not the port!

So if you want a good CD-RW drive this drive is great but it appears you really need a G4 and a powerful video card to take advantages of the DVD features. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Wait till you want to update the drivers.
Lacie are getting the wrong end of the stick from me. The fact that this company refuses to update drivers for old hardware for new versions of an OS is simply a farce in this day and age.

Lacie refuse to develop drivers to support a new OS or even an update. Back in the days of NT they would not even bring out Win2k support for the systems. When XP arrived most of their hardware the year before was simply left to dry up with age.

In short if you buy Lacie then it will only perform to your current system specs. Any changes to the OS and chances are you will be shelling out more doe for new hardware.

1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible support for a poorly made device.
The device would not properly be recognized by my OS half of the time. I called tech support, and they hung up on me. I wasn't even arguing with them, so I have no idea why they did that.

4-0 out of 5 stars Don't buy this if time is important to you
Yesterday, I started a VHS tape conversion to DVD+RW. This project started at 2:00pm, and while the movie itself was 2:00 hours...the final DVD burn was complete at 10:00pm. The single, most time consuming part is the cumbersome Arcsoft Showbiz software that comes with it. The process for "transcoding" and "authoring" take forever, even at the lowest resolution. Admittedly, the final product is beautiful with exquisite sound. I've been converting old VHS tapes to DVD format so they'll be preserved without degradation. When compared to other similar items, it's a very user-friendly if you use the HP software for direct-to-DVD burning. But, as stated earlier...the ArcSoft software is a huge pain in the ___!

5-0 out of 5 stars Well Worth It!
My main point here is HP has great technical support for this product.I've had my DC3000 since Dec 03, and I love it!It was just what I needed to transfer my old VHS tapes to DVD.I didn't have any of the problems other people discussed in previous reviews (I have a 1.3 GHz processor, 256 MB memory, 60GB hard drive, and Windows XP Professional).I did have trouble writing to the +R discs with my first movie.Consequently, I was on the phone with HP tech support a few times. They were always very helpful and willing to spend all the time needed to get the problem solved. It turned out my first movie just hadn't "created" right, and after I "created" it again, it worked great.Just wanted to let people know the HP tech support is great!

1-0 out of 5 stars HP DVD Movie Writer DC3000/4000
IT:s like this I purchased the dc 4000about a week ago this is my 3rd one. But anyway i;ve had nothing but problems, with it ive spent 3days talking to tech support for about 3hrs eac time. Right now hp is doing research on it. to figure out he problem. But it appears to be a software issue. It does every thing but the main thing , which is burn the dvd .Al;so its its only compatible with the software the comes with it. so if it ever gets that fixed it might be ok. But i was very dissappointed with it and i expected better from hp

1-0 out of 5 stars caveat emptor
It took me 3 months to replace this product. Technical support is both time-consuming and worthless. Eventually had to talk with someone in the U.S. to resolve the problem. Hint: If you are frustrated with technical support then go to HP's website and contact somebody there. Replacement seems to be working for the time being. Last time I am purchasing anything from HP. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Very hard to work with and frustrating
I am not an expert with CD/DVD writers, but even I notice that there is something wrong with this drive. It is not just the software, I think the hardware has got some design problems. My Windows2000 is very slow in recognizing that the drive is being connected and in many cases it hangs or gets into long still sessions before getting into normal operations. Nero does not recognize my drive, so I have to use the provided software with it and it is not the greatest. The drive has even difficulty recognizing raw CDs I put in its tray. In many cases it rejects them, though they are perfectly fine. In general I think you should look somewhere else for a good CD/DVD writer.

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed in HP
I bought the 300i (internal) a year ago and have been very frustrated with it.If all you want to do is copying CDs/DVDs, that is fine. But if you want to have more control over it, good luck! The biggest complaint I have is the accompanying software. It treats the users like they don't know anything by hiding all the options.

Here are the problems I have:
1) If you have used Nero before, the hp woftware is going to really disappoint you.I spent "a lot" of hours getting this to work with my Win2000 Pro.

2) Watch out:The default is set to burn only one session rather than multi-sessions.And you have to change the settings in "option".Although this is the default setting for some other brands too, but at least with the other brands, you get to see the settings before it starts burning.

3) It is not compatible with other commercial DVD software. It conflicts with MS windows media player's Roxio burn-ware.And Nero doesn't work with it either, I heard.Again, google to find out.

Side note: although not designed for it, it does not work well with Linux SuSE at all.

It is very proprietory and it sucks.I am getting ready to invest in another DVD burner that actually works the way I want it to.Because of this DVD writer, I have been shunning away from buying another HP product...I have a HP inkjet that works pretty well and produces good quality printings, but the software that comes with it takes up more than 100Mb of my harddisk space... No lie!

5-0 out of 5 stars A good bargain!!
Bought this as I was low on cash, and I haven't been disappointed since!! Worked like a charm out of the box with the provided USB cable!! But its not without its pros and cons:

CONS: Big and bulky. For those with limited space, you might want to rethink a smaller external model or an internal model. DVD write speed might not seem such a big deal, but waiting half an hour to burn a full DVD at 4X speed is slow... I think 8X drives are already out on the market. Another drawback is that the burning software included is Record Now (not the Max version), which is not really useful. You would have to get a copy of Nero 6 to make full use of this burner.

PROS: Works with almost all media I throw at it!! Plus, the DVD+R discs I have burnt so far work with both a Sony and Shinco DVD Player, my Dell DVD-ROM, and my beloved XBOX (phillips drive). Also, the design of the drive looks kinda cool... several friends have had that "OOOOO" look when they first spot it.

I don't know about the quality of the technical support and warranty, as I have never had a problem with it!!! All I know is that there's a standard warranty for 1 year, but really... for a $200- product it is not really worth the time running around to get it repaired if it breaks down.

All in all... I would recommend it to anyone who is just starting out with DVD burning. There are better drives on the market, but this will suit the beginner and even experts just fine.

1-0 out of 5 stars Do not buy!!!!!
Please do not buy this item.

I bought one. It is broken right away (after two week; pass the store exchange time). I have called the technique service in India. I spent 2 times 3 hours with them try to figure out what was the problem. Even they figure out the machine is broken; they will not exchange my machine. They said the machine warranty is expired for 1 year warranty. The fact is that my machine is less than one year (made October 2003). I sill have the bad machine and I do not know what to with it. I have to buy another one from other manufactory.

5-0 out of 5 stars No ProblemsBurner
I have been using this burner for about 3 weeks now and am very pleased with it. I use Windows 2000Pro,a Dell 700mhz laptop and a firewire card with the 300e. For software I mainly use DVD X Copy Platinum and sometimes CloneDVD after CSS file filtering. Haven't had one problem yet and the Memorex +R DVDs are accepted by me and my friends Panasonic S25 players. The S25 is listed as being able to only play -R DVDs but it plays my +R backups perfectly with very good quality. This Burner is not the fastest but it is very flexible and reliable. 4-0 out of 5 stars Best DVD writer of the bunch (and I tested a lot)
By the time I finish writing this review, this drive will probably be obsolete as new dual-sided DVD's are already hitting the market. That's ok, though. As you know, it saves a lot of cash to stay a step or two behind the newest and greatest computer gadgets, plus you're less likely to run into problems as bugs are slowly worked out.

Finding a good DVD burner turned into quite a chore. As the speeds have increased, it seems a lot of manufacturers have been pushing out these drives without testing them. Of the number of brands I tried, many cheaper drives were quite problematic. A few didn't work at all following installation. The only two drives I tested that I can recommend are this one and a TDK model drive with similar specs.

This drive works very well with the included Nero burning software. Nero also has an option that verifies the written data to make sure the burn came out ok. This is a great new feature most other burning software does not have. I'm a little disappointed that Nero's Disk Quality Test does not work with this drive, though. I believe it's a problem with the software, not with the drive, and I've been going back and forth with Ahead Software, the makers of Nero, to try and get it fixed.

Even though this is an 8x drive, it's capable of writing at 12x speed using compatible DVD+R media. This is a mindboggling amount of data, 16,620KB/sec or the equivalent of a 100x CD burner. At 12x, you can fill a 4.7GB DVD in about seven minutes and verify your data was written correctly in another six.

The drive has a light grey color that happens to match the color of my case perfectly. It will probably look out of place in a standard putty or black color case so keep this in mind if aesthetics is your thing. Compared to TDK, both drives performed great with name brand media. With cheap no-name media, this drive seemed to have problems writing to cheap CD's whereas the TDK drive had problems writing to cheap DVD's. Since everything is heading to DVD storage, and because this drive is much quieter than the TDK model, Sony ends up the overall winner in my book.

Hope the review helped.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great DVD burner!
I'm running Windows XP on a Dell Dimension 4500 with 768 MB of RAM. The Sony DRU-540A installed like a charm. No problems whatsoever. The Nero Software that was included with the drive is wonderful... I used to do most of my burning using Roxio's EZ CD Creator 5, and I've pretty much abandoned that at this point. I've burned CD's with no glitches, and approximately 80 DVD videos with only one coaster. This drive has worked great for me!

5-0 out of 5 stars Works Beautifully like 510A
I had Sony 510A for a long time, and then gave it to my friend recently. I was very happy with Sony 510A so I purchased 540A few weeks ago. I never had any problem with 510A, nor this 540A so far. I never ever wasted a single CDR or DVDR, I am very satisfied with this product.

1-0 out of 5 stars Sony DRU-540A
I purchased this drive a week ago, and it failed from the beginning (unreadable disks, multiple failures using Sony's drive check utility).I contacted Sony customer support and learned that the support was worse than the drive. The first customer support rep was arrogant and did not know the product.Sony then requires customers to wait 24 hrs. after sending test results to Sony before they would even talk to a customer regarding the problem, therfore it was another day before I could speak to customer service after making recommended changes to the system.Look at other drives before purchasing this one. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Locks up my computer all the time!!!
This drive sucks.I paid (on sale at Staples) $115.00 And it has not worked well since the day I got it.It locks my computer up so bad, I cannot even shut it down!!!I have to hard power it down and as you know not shutting everything else down causes software problems...I have tried to find firmware upgrades for this drive and none can be found on internet. The front of the retail box (which I still have) brags about Toll Free Technical Support.... uh... so what... someone answers the phone, they don't speak good english and they can't help me.Last Pacific Digital Product I am ever going to buy.Stick with name brands... Plextor, Sony, both support their drives... even the older ones.Gee I am mad!!!I won't get fooled again!

3-0 out of 5 stars decent...for a while
I bought this to play DVDs--nothing else. That it does. However, it's a little slow extracting audio and recently the tray started getting stuck when opening and closing.

2-0 out of 5 stars cheap but not always functional
I've had this DVD drive for a year and a half now, and it does work most of the time (albeit with a terribly loud whirring noise that sometimes detracts from the movie) but I've found that it cannot detect some DVDs. They are perfectly legit home videos that work in other DVD-ROMs, but not in this one. So every once in a while I have to borrow someone else's DVD player just to watch a movie, which is a nuisance. It will probably be a better deal to buy a more expensive DVD-ROM drive that runs quietly and actually works all the time.

5-0 out of 5 stars great burner
well this is my first dvd drive and it works fine. Burned all my home movies without a flaw.
however when i used the nero software to backup my computer, i had a lot of errors and still can't use the back up. i think the blame is not on the drive or the great nero software, but the norton anit virus prof. that i have installed is some how not allowing the proses to go to completion.

3-0 out of 5 stars Works Great for comp noob.
This is my first DVD burner I have ever used.Installed myself with out ever seeing the inside of a computer.. No problems with install.. Loaded comp and recognized the drive, loaded software and nero.. Burned my first Dvd 4.7 gb DATA disk with no problems. Burned a movie on 4.7 disk and it worked great except there was no dvd menu, normal or not I dont know, But still played the movie on all my 3 home dvd player, dvd-rom and my dvd player in my car.

Did a MP3 data 8gb disk and it worked fine in the comp, dvd players and my car still..

Next step was the Home movie converted from vhs and making it to dvd.. Had to save all data to harddrive then burn it.. worked flawlessly..

I say this is a great burner minus the price and the current availability of the media but we all know that in time it will be available..

As for all the bad reviews.. I dont know why people are having problems.. I, with no comp exp and just reading the user manuels and faqs on-line, was able to figure this out with no problems and only one coaster which was my fault based on the fact I accidently hit the cancel in the mid of a dvd..

5-0 out of 5 stars I have had no bad burns
I have had no bad burns. This is the first DVD burner I have ever used. I thought it would be harder to use but it is so easy! As for the bad reviews I don't know what could make this happen. I do know the burner needs to be set to a landcode the first time you use it to view a DVD. Other then that there is nothing to set or do. I am so glad I have this burner.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great burner but not cheap
This burner is grat it works flawlessly but it is more expensive than other burners. The only downside is the price. Also double layer and 16x media are impossible to find.

5-0 out of 5 stars Worked flawlessly with Linux.

1-0 out of 5 stars What a piece of crap!
This DVD drive is truly a BIG piece of steaming crap.DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY purchasing this DVD drive. The DVD drive only worked for about 6 months. Then, one day it started to disappear from Windows Explorer and decided to properly read Data CDs, DVDs, and Music CDs whenever it fricking felt like it (which was NOT that often).Sony...you're fired!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Another High-Quality Product from Sony
I am an A+ Certified computer technician, who is currently working towards an MCSE (microsoft certified systems engineer).I have a lot of computer equipment in my home, running a variety of operating systems from Windows XP Pro, 2000, and Advanced Server.I installed this Sony DVD-Rom on an old IBM desktop, running Windows 2000 Advanced Server. This system has a Pentium III processor, 128Mb of RAM, and an 8Mb business-class graphics card. Not exactly an entertainment PC, but I wanted to be able to watch DVDs from this system.

The Sony drive installed without any problems.Everything you need is included in the retail box. After installing the Power DVD software, I decided to insert Lord of the Rings: Return of the King DVD to test the system. The Sony's drive tray opened silently and smoothly.Certainly much smoother than the NEC that came with my Dell 8200!The Cyberlink Power DVD software played the movie without a hitch.

All in all, this is a very capable DVD drive.I bought the unit from Best Buy, for about $59.99.At the time, there was an available Sony combination CD-RW/DVD-Rom for $89.99 (which had a mail-in rebate that would eventually reduce the cost to $69.99).I decided to go with this unit simply because I do not need the ability to write to CDs on this system. However, if you do not have any kind of CD/DVD writer on your system, I would recommend the more expensive combination unit.

There are cheaper DVD-Roms out there. But, this is a Sony. And the build quality is what you would expect. Also, this drive is shorter in depth than your typical optical drive. The smaller physical size of the drive is definitely an advantage in a small desktop system.

I highly recommend this unit to anyone looking for a simple DVD-Rom.The quality is traditional Sony, the included Power DVD player is more than capable, and the smaller physical size of the drive can make installation in a smaller desktop unit easier.

1-0 out of 5 stars Incredibly poor drive!
I tried two Sony DDU-1621 DVD-ROM drives, and both of them constantly disappear from Windows Explorer and Device Manager on a brand-new install of WindowsXPSP1 on an Intel D875PBZ mobo.Reboot, reboot, reboot...Then I read the reviews elsewhere, and you would nearly think that this was the worst drive ever made. The Sony storage support website has NO official firmware updates, either.I tried a new IDE ribbon cable, but that wasn't the answer.Yes, the drive is properly configured per the instructions on the Sony drive support website.I've read that Sony doesn't even make this drive; well, they shouldn't put their name on it, either, since it drags down their namebrand quality.Best thing about it?It's even quieter when it's dead!

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't buy if you want to watch dvd movies on win xp
This DVD player works fine with windows 98, but if you're ever thinking about using windows XP, don't buy this one, unless you feel that it's okay never to be able to watch dvd movies on it.

So basicly any other dvd player works better than this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Works great. No problems.
I had no problems with this drive.I was great for movies, ripping CD-Audio, and CD to CD copying. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars It crawls at 1.5X after two weeks!!!
Bought this dvd-rom as a back up to my dvd writer. It came with PowerDVD, which seems to be more versatile than WinDVD.I noticed that it originally read at above 8x max but now it is constantly at about 1.5x, which defeats the purpose of my purchase because it's now reads slower than my dvd writer that rates at a slower read speed! The program that I use to rip dvds for backup always show something in the buffer, sometimes as much as 50%!My computer slows down to a crawl whenever this dvd-rom is used to rip a dvd; doing something like surfing the web seems to be a chore. You should think about buying some other dvd-rom drive if your purpose is not to watch movies only.

4-0 out of 5 stars Works great on a Mac too
I bought this drive today to give my Mirror Drive Door powermac dvd burning capability.I have a combo drive in the first bay set as the master and pretty easily followed the instructions to install the memorex drive. It worked first time, but I had to take a knife and trim very slightly the corners of the front of the tray (not hard with a sharp knife) so it could fit through the mac's case.OS X 10.4.1 recognizes the drive as a beefed up superdrive essentially and uses alt+eject as the keystroke to open and close it as well as adding a taskbar item.DVD+Rs (8x memorex) can write in about 6 minutes... I haven't tested any other formats.

Memorex doesn't list the drive as mac-compatible simply to avoid having to handle mac-specific tech problems, not because it doesn't work.any internal ide drive should work.

As for the bundled Nero software, that's the only coaster this drive has created thus far.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't buy this stuff
I got this dvd burner manufactured by memorex about 3 months ago, I got it for 69.99 at tiger direct, but I never got it to work, it does not even read discs and no one can help me out nowhere... then went to www.memorex.com to get more information about some new firmware or software which could solve my problem and nothing! Now, I have this sony dvd burner, it works great and customer support is great

3-0 out of 5 stars Beware of rated burn speeds
I bought the drive mainly because of the Nero software. Recently began using 8X DVD-R Memorex media but drive does not burn at 8X to DVD-R. Although box and booklet cover state it does, page seven in the instructions states only 4X on DVD-R media. It's very disingenuous of Memorex to call this drive a "True 8X."

5-0 out of 5 stars Works for me
I needed to replace the DVD+RW that came with my HP 793.I have DVD-RW on other computers, so I am happy with a DVD+/-RW. I needed to change a jumper, but the directions were clear and the replaced drive confirmed the instructions, so that was no problem. The unit slid into the slot, XP Home recognized it and I was able to back up the computer on 2 DVD+RWs using BackUpMyPC. So far I have not used any of the software that came with the drive. No problems so far.

1-0 out of 5 stars Avoid this unit.
I bought mine thinking "what a deal!" -- as usual, you get what you pay for. Mine installed flawlessly and looked sexy, but that is the only reason why I am giving it 1 star. I burned 8 "coasters" (both DVD-R and DVD+R) at various speeds (4x, 6x, 8x, 16x) but I was never able to record a single good disc. The bundled software (Nero) was either recording the discs without reporting problems (only to find out later that they had tons of errors on them), or it was simply stalling at some point, randomly (2%, 3%, 54%, 75%). I have a 5400rpm hard drive, 256Mb of RAM, and a 1Ghz processor. All my other applications were closed during the burning sessions. Excuse me, but that should be enough for a DVD burning process. If it's not, they haven't gotten it right yet... I took the drive back after 4 days of repeated, frustrating failures, and I spent the extra twenty bucks to get me a (roughly equivalent) Sony double-layer DVD burner, which apparently works a lot better (burned one DVD so far, tested it thoroughly afterwards -- no errors. Bravos Sony; Memorex please go back to the drawing board). Hope this helps.
