4-0 out of 5 stars Overall All Good
Specs
2 gig Celeron processor
512 megs memory
Xp Home

Installation took under 10 minutes with taking my older CD-RW drive out and screwing in this new drive. Software installed without a problem and not a peep from Xp.

Roxio's software bascially does the same stuff my Nero used to do. For some odd reason I can't set the burning speed above 8x for CDs while the drive is rated at 48x. When set to optimal it ranges from 7x to 32x. My old drive was a 48x and since I can't fit more then 2 optical drives, that defintely irks me. If you're planning on burning lots of CDs, this is not the drive for you, or at least the software for sure.

DVD burning is fine at 4x, a full DVD takes around 15 minutes. Haven't had a issue with one yet after about 26 dvd-rs and 50 CD-rs. However, I'm not sure this is the drive issue but I can't seem to copy DVD-Rs with Roxio from my 16x DVD drive to the TDK one.

While this drive seems to have some odd idioscracies, it's likely due to the software and not the drive itself. It's fast, reliable and comes from a good company.

4-0 out of 5 stars Upgrade made easy
We recently upgraded our drives at work and this was the choice. I am satisfied so far on:

1. installation
I had to install the TDK DVD on 3 computers and it took a little over an hour, not each, total time. Windows XP accepted it right away, unlike most windows versions were you have to search for the drive.

2. Software
The software that was included with the DVD burner is great. Roxio drag to disc, a lite version of Roxio Pic, and Roxio classic as well as Roxio DVD max player, to view your dvd's.

3. The Look
At home , on my personal computer, I am picky about the hardware and the way it looks. The TDK looks sleek (black) and has a nice gloss to the face of it!

4. Durability
So far (3 months later) it has worked great. The reason for the minus one star rating is because it is a little loud. It hummms and can be a little annoying for someone with a quiet office.

*All in all I would recommend this DVD burner to anyone looking for a nice, durable and excellent priced dvd player/burner! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I should have brought this sooner...
I've had this drive for a while. I brought it to replace a dead Toshiba drive(SD-M1502) which was pretty good while it lasted. But, it stopped reading DVDs. I should have noticed a problem when it couldn't read discs it played before...

Installing this drive took me less than 15 minutes, if you take away unplugging the computer, opening it up, and putting the cover back on. Just slide in the drive, screw it in place, plug in the cables, and you're set. You don't even have to install drivers! Windows detects it automatically.

When I powered up and used it I was pleasantly surprised. First off, it's quiet. I had to strain to hear it spin just to make sure it could read the discs. Well, it reads every disc it says it supports, and every movie I threw at it, slightly scratched or not! It even plays movies that my Toshiba choked on.

A positive benefit here is that this drive has upgradeable firmware. If Samsung releases a new version of it just go to their website, download, and install. It's a great thing to have because every now and then some compatibility issues might arise. They aren't very common though.

Pros:
1) Relatively new - released in 2003
2) Super-quiet
3) Upgradeable firmware
4) Reads DVD-RAM discs
5) Comes with PowerDVD XP
6) Huge buffer for smooth playback of DVD movies

Cons:
1) It takes a fraction of a second more to pick up the disc when it's inserted, but it's barely noticeable.
2) If you listen very very closely, you might hear a very quiet clicking sound when it's reading. Again, it's hardly noticeable, and it doesn't deter from enjoying something like a movie.

I consider this one of the best DVD-ROM drives out there right now. Comparably, the Lite-On drives are good as well, but there are some annoyances like spinning-up noise and such. The newer Toshiba drives are good too, but they have a speed lock for watching DVD movies, so the picture tends to stutter.

For this drive, Samsung took the best attributes and put them together. It's very inexpensive for all the work it does, it supports reading DVD-RAM discs, it has no spinning-up noises, and a 512KB buffer. If you're looking for a stable replacement that's sure to last for quite a while, this drive is the winner.

1-0 out of 5 stars can't get it to work
I have tried and tried to get this working with no luck. The computer will not recognize the drive - I have downloaded the instructions and followed them to the letter - it was easy enough to replace the drive that was in there - getting it to function is another story!! I know it is connected because the drawer opens and closes - but no drive shows up - even though the original had been in the same slot.

1-0 out of 5 stars Ordered DV-516E, got DV-516D
I ordered the "TEAC DV-516E 16x Internal IDE Black DVD-ROM Drive" and got a box labeled "DV516E/KIT/B" but inside was a drive labeled "DV-516D".The DV-516D has a 256KB data buffer, not the 512KB data buffer that I expected when I ordered the DV-516E.The DV-516D worked well enough, but I decided to return it because of the deceptive packaging.

5-0 out of 5 stars awesome DVD drive
I bought this drive as a replacement for my old HP DVD drive. I have to replace my old HP drive twice and it keep failing even I don't use it this much. Since, I have good experience with TEAC products before. I have two CD Teac writers for almost two years now without any problems. So I bought this drive, and as usual they done a good job with this product. The Drive itself is very quit. The drive comes with POWER DVD XP player. The drive installation is very easy. You need 2 minutes to install the drive. I highly recommend this drive.

4-0 out of 5 stars Quiet and Stable
TEAC is attempting to enter the optical drive market.I think they have done a good job with this product. This is a reasonably-priced RETAIL drive.I use this as my main optical drive and even to install my Windows XP Pro without any problems.I did not hear any noise or stability issues experienced from spinning media.

It has a cool black bezel which would complement anyone's case that isn't beige/PS2 in color.

The size in an industry standard so you will not run into any problem installing the unit.

It has good online reviews in reading media.Do a check on the model and you will come into a famous site that reviews optical drives.

So why only 4 stars?First, I would appreciate better design for the bezel.Althoug it performs great, it looks like any other generic optical drive.TDK, Samsung and Sony are coming out with their own cool design.Second, although the bezel is black, the internal tray that loads the CD is still beige. Why?I would appreciate an all-black design.

Overall, you will not be disappointed with the performance and price. If you had more money to spend, then get one with better design like the above mentioned manufacturers or a Pioneer slot-loading drives. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Bargain price for a great working product
I bought this at circuit city as it was one of the cheapest they had. Went home, took it out of the box and installed in my computer. Installed the drivers and burned an ISO file, worked fine. I've only had 1 failed disk as my computer locked up while burning a dvd. It's not the fastest burning but for the price it's great, takes about 5-10 minutes to burn a dvd, much quicker for cd's. If your not looking to waiste too much money go with this.

4-0 out of 5 stars After upgrade unit worked flawlessly
Unit now works flawlessly and read and burns disk without problem after upgrading the firmware on the drive. Pinicle software did not see the drive until I went to BTC.COM and downloaded the liveupgrade utility which sent the software from version 0.54 to 1.59. Now it burns at 8X without problems. Given the cost of burning software can be more than this bundle I am very happy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Works exactly how its supposed to.
I just put mine in, no need to upgrade firmware or anything. I recommend using I copy DVDs 2. Works like a charm, especially at movies and games. Mine diodnt come with pinnacle it came with Roxio dvd creator. I just used my own dvd copy program, I have already burned 8 dvds and not one is a coaster.

1-0 out of 5 stars Really really horrible product
IOMAGIC is not a listed supported DVD burner on the Pinnacle Systems (www.pinnaclesys.com) website (this drive comes with Pinnacle software). No wonder, I have wasted 3 DVDs and precious hours trying to coax the software to create one successful DVD from this drive! I have had the same problems are others in this forum - drive not recognized, burner software troubles etc....

Please do not buy this drive if you value your time and money!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great DVD Drive
The problems most people encountered with this drive are caused
by the fact that some people purchase a better quality drive than
others, even though they come from an identical retail box.

This is because I/O Magic repackages and resells Optorite DVD
Drives (DD0401, DD0405). Recently they started reselling BTC
drives. Optorite drives are higher quality than BTC, so check the
back of the box at what drive you are purchasing.

Another reason is a great variance in the quality of DVD media
available on the market.

These are the only certified high speed media for this drive as
of this writing (Fall 04):

YUDEN000T01
RICOHJPNR01
MCC 002
CMC MAG F01

The above media are sold under brand names:
Memorex 4x, TDK 4x, Maxell 4x, and Sony 4x, and Verbatim 4x.

There are no 8x speed DVD blanks available. However, Memorex
DVD+R 4x and SONY DVD+R 4x could be spinned faster than 4x,
close to 10Mb/s.

Even with a correct media you would still need to flash the drive
to enable higher speeds. After the flashing the drive works
great, flawless operation and not a single failure using any of
several types of media. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great DVD Burner + Outstanding service
I've had my Sony DRX510UL for slightly over a year now and have burned in the neighborhood of 500 discs with the only failures being my own fault.I will point out that about 2 months after I purchased my burner, it ceased working and I quickly obtained a RMA (return merchandise authorization) from Sony and returned it for service. To my great surprise, it was back in my hands, fully repaired and working perfectly, in less than 8 days which for any electronic repair job is 'warp' speed.Since that repair, I've had absolutely no problems and I'm about to purchase a second DRX510UL for my wife's computer. All in all, an excellent burner that works with several software programs and should give you no major problems. And on the off chance that your burner develops problems, Sony will stand behind the machine, with a repair and return policy that will match or beat any other company.

2-0 out of 5 stars dvd x510ul;
what is wrong? it will not fit in msy sony viao. get i am stuck

1-0 out of 5 stars Beware of defective drx-510ul
I become one of those unfortunate customers to get a defective drx-510ul drive.

I am a amateur photographer and wanted a dvd writer for backup of my digital images that run over a 18 GB bow. Bought the drive two months ago used it to burn over 15 dvds, like twice a month couple of dvds. And one fine day the burn process stopped. I tried installing all the latest updates of Record Now, My DVD software the firmware etc. I read somewhere that drx-510ul has the same internal drive as the DRU-510A. Apparently lot users who bought that also have same problem Hope this helps with your buying decision. If you buy test extensivly during the first 30 days or the return period.

Pros: Fastes drive Yet. Dual interface (iLink/USB)

Cons: Stopped working, defective drive.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great burner!
I have used the unit to burn over 100 blanks with no problem.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best 4x external DVD drive on the market. Period.
After doing extensive research, I made the decision to purchase Sony's DRX-510UL external DVD drive. I had two primary needs: 1.) The ability to backup large amounts of personal computer data; 2.) The ability to make backups of my DVD movie library using "DVD X Copy Platinum" software for Windows from 321 Studios (highly recommended -- and available on Amazon.com -- as the included software does not make such backups). On all counts, I made the right decision to buy this particular burner.

Sony delivers a superior product: It stays cool during operations; the unit is sturdy; every disc I've created has worked (no coasters after making over 60 discs to date); and it operates quietly, too. I use Memorex's DVD+R and DVD+RW blank media; I've also used TDK's Armor Plated DVD media successfully, too. (They cost double what other blank DVD media costs, but yield 100 times greater resistance to dirt and scratches, plus repel dust. It's worth the investment, esp. if you have family or friends that must touch/use the DVDs themselves... and tend to scratch them.)

While this drive can burn/read DVD-R, I haven't used this format and cannot comment.

To consider, too: The 8x DVD burners are becoming available as of this writing. While those new 8x units are faster, bear in mind the price of the 8x media, plus the new-ness of the software drivers. The Sony DRX-510UL may be 4x speed, but has a proven track record at this point. The 8 meg. cache on the 4x (vs. the 2 meg. cache on the 8x) may sound like an advantage, but 8x units are still faster. It's a matter of whether you want to spend extra $$ for slightly faster performance, plus slightly pricier blank DVD media -- or not. Then again, you could also wait a year or two for the blue laser DVD burners which ought to yield over 27 gigs. of data. It depends on what you need right here, right now -- and can afford. Technology is ever-changing.

Before buying, make sure your DVD player(s) can handle the DVD+R, DVD-R, DVD+RW or DVD-RWformat(s). You'll want to burn DVD discs which are compatible with your players. My home DVD player could handle what I burned. However, after taking a disc to a friend's house, we found their older DVD player would not play it. (Note: It is said that 90% of "newer" DVD players can handle DVD+R discs.)

Also: Evaluate your computer system for true USB 2.0 and/orFireWire hardware connectivity. Without it, the burner still operates fast with USB 1.0 and 1.1 -- but nowhere near as fast. Just because you have the USB and FireWire ports doesn't mean they're up-to-date. Check 'em first; upgrade them if necessary to get better speed results.

What would make me happier about this purchase?Linux drivers/support in Sony's product lines.

All in all, the Sony DRX-510UL is an excellent product. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars WARNING for OS X users
If you use OS X and buy this you will wind up pulling your hair out and then in an out of the way Iomega support page
(http://www.iomega.com/software/cdrwdrivers.html) you will find the following statement "Iomega HotBurn does not currently support Mac OS X or Mac OS 9.2."

THEN, they will try to sell you software at a "special price" only $34.95!

Or you have to buy Toast for $89.95. Plus no DVD software.

I wish I wasn't so cheap and had been willing to shell out the bucks for a Que Firewire drive.

1-0 out of 5 stars Deceptive advertising.
This product claims to play DVD's but what iomega fails to tell you is that no DVD software is included. You have to spend a long time on the ichat customer support site only to discover you have to pay more money for the DVD software. The more I use iomega products the more I am frustrated with their quality and customer service.

1-0 out of 5 stars Wish I could rate this a zero
I love Iomgea products. However, I could not get this to work with my network computer and after having several 1 on 1 live online chats with their so called tech. support I could not get anywhere with it. And after e-mailing them several times the response I received was a number to try which of course was not toll free.I ended up just sending this back to Amazon.com but, I was really hoping they could tell me what was wrong with it because I would love to have an external CD-RW/DVD-ROM on my network computer. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Nice Hidden Option
Like most normal DVD-ROM's this drive does a nice job of playing DVDs at 16x, nothing special there, good seek times, and IBM's high standard for quality projects. However, one other thing this drive does well is read DVD-RAMs at 3x, an uncommon characteristic for many drives.I searched high and low for a DVD-RAM drive with a high read rate, and in some cases any drive that would read DVD-RAM.This was one of the few that I found that was above 1x, most are 1x or 2x and cost an arm and a leg, mainly due to the fact that they are recorders as well.
Now, most people don't care about reading DVD-RAM, but I found that it was extremely important if I wanted to transfer information off my Panasonic DVR-HS2, then transfer it to my computer for futher editing and burning to my multiplatform 4X drive.
The problem is the Panasonic DVR-HS2 will only record DVDs onto -R at 1x, and RAM at 3x. This means that if you have 20 hours of VHS to back up onto your DVR-HS2 harddrive, it will take you another 20 hours to burn it and a ton of DVD-R.But if you use the DVD-RAM option you can burn all of the info off in a third of the time, and you only need to use 1, that you can write over 1,000 of times.Once you get the info on the DVD-RAM then you can let the IBM drive read it into your computer, super fast, and transfer the information about anyway you would like.
The DVD-RAM option is probably not big to a lot of people, but for those who do possess a Panasonic DVR, or any other stand-alone DVR,it is a very wise option to have for your PC. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars great until one month after warranty expired, then #%$*&#!
This drive worked beautifully for exactly 13 months. Then, my pc wouldn't recognize it.Reinstalled it, upgraded firmware, but nada. Not a good deal.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good value
Fairly good burning speed for both DVD and CD-rom. Not the best but good especially considering cost.

1-0 out of 5 stars Bad News
I think that this drive created exactly 2 readable DVDs during its lifetime, only one of which was readable by any other player.

This drive is bad news. Avoid it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent burner!!
I am using this writer for the past 6 months. I never found a single problem with this writer. I have written many home and backup dvds. The burn process was always successful. For writing 4.7gb with a 4x dvd-r or +r it will just take 12 minutes. For a cd-r or +r it will hardly take 2 minutes. Although it is a little pricey, I am totally satisfied with the accuracy. It is better to put some extra bucks on the writer than wasting time on scrapping your expensive blank dvds.

1-0 out of 5 stars Buyers be aware
Do you have slight (or big) problems with your drive after few uses?. Download Sony's own drive check utility program from thier support site and see for yourself (they are strongly recomend not to use it until directed to do so by useles technical support), and read chek's log files shoving drive's internal problems (software missconfiguration.....). Proudly made in China, congratulation on your purchase. This is my second drive in least than two monts and is going back, this time for refund. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars get a plextor
Plextors px-712a and Nec's 3500a are much much faster, support more formats(no the tdk is not universal),and cost less. My plexy has never produced a single coaster and can write a 700mb cdr in just under 2 min. Either one can be had for under $100. Check around there are way better drives produced by "generic" companies than anything tdk or hp has ever released.

1-0 out of 5 stars get a plextor
Only 4x? One of the slowest I've used even at 4x speed. Pextor's PX-712a or Nec's latest 3500a write much faster and consistent(12x for the plexy, 16 x for nec). They both support more formats(Nec=all known formats, Plextor=all except dual layer write).Plus cdr/cdrw is much much faster at 48x, about 2 min tops for any cdr. I don't know how they justify the price of this drive as you can get more than double the performance for less. Nec's can be had for under $100, do a search.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb!! Typical TDK Product
After having used a cheap DVD Writer (I/O Magic), and returning it in 5 days, I got this today for ONLY $79.99 at Circuit City on account of Thanksgiving Sale. It was almost too good to believe since it retails at almost $170 on average.
I can clearly see the difference between JUNK like I/O Magic and
TDK. It has worked like a CHARM!!
For those who are complaining need to get a reality Check.
I have not even touched the included Software, for none other than DVD-X-COPY can copy the DVDs. Rest software on market can only copy Home Made movies and fail to copy CSS protected DVDs.

I have used Memorex DVD-R and 4 in a row.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!! You may not get a deal like I got :)

5-0 out of 5 stars TDK Supports Their Products
I bought the TDK DVD drive and it was not able to recognize DVD+RW media after writing to the media one time. (DVD+R media worked fine.) This problem had existed since I purchased the drive. I "chatted" with tech support and they agreed that it was a hardware problem with the drive. When I called tech support for an RMA number, they informed me that I was past the warranty period (by a couple of months). I requested they cover the repair anyway as a gesture of goodwill, since the drive had never worked properly. THEY AGREED TO REPAIR THE DRIVE! Now that is what I call great support. Had the drive failed after the warranty period expired, it would not be right for anyone to expect TDK to repair the product. As it is, I feel that TDK has shown incredible integrity and gone above and beyond the call of duty. Hat's off to TDK!

The drive is a solid drive and installs easily. I suggest using Nero software with this drive, instead of the bundled software.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good at what it does - so far
I received this item as a gift, so I can't really complain. At the moment I am still running Windows 98SE on an HP Pavilion that meets the minimum system requirements for this drive - at least according to what's printed on the side of the box. On the + side, this drive is *so* fast at burning CD's I'm still getting used to it! On the minus... well, there must be some incompatibility either with Win98SE or with my Pavilion (Athlon III?) because no matter what I try the 'DVD Builder' program simply will not respond. Not much help on the TDK site either. So, if I'd paid money for this and was stuck with my computer I would be angry. But as I said it was a gift and I am buying a brand new Dell (never again HP!!) with a builtin DVD+RW drive so I don't care. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Full of Troubles
I wish I have some good things to say about my experience with this drive...

I got this drive two months ago and am still having problems with it.First of all, the software "RecordNow" is a very limiting wizard-like, step-by-step process.Come on... At some point, your users will grow out of the "novice" stage, right? Why not give us a drag-and-drop GUI for users who know what they are doing?Like in Nero Ahead. This drive automatically "fixiate" my dvd-r disc when I was trying it out... How frustrating!I never had this problem with Nero software before!

Secondly, the DLA software would not install side-by-side with Roxio.Unfortunately, Microsoft's Windows Media Player 9 automatically install Roxio and it is very very difficult to uninstall Roxio.I Googled.I need to get a different burning-ware that will work with this drive.

Lastly, the DLA provided is not compatible with Nero's DLA.And frankly, this drive is a little slow in recognizing a disc when you insert a dvd+rw or cd-rw disc.

I am very frustrated with this HP drive...

1-0 out of 5 stars doesn't work with any other software
Nero, Gear, Deepburner or Roxio....

none of them work with this drive. The included software is terrible. I get a "There is a firmware update on the net for this drive, connect now?" Message a few minutes after booting up the drive. There are no firmware updates for this drive. The great thing is when it checks the drive it blows up any burn you are in the middle of and kills a disk. Tech support never got back to me.

I am never going to by an HP burner ever again, on the topic of HP drives, all of our HP DVD200 drives at work failed, were replaced under warranty and then failed again out of warranty.

1-0 out of 5 stars Would rather have purchased something else
I've had nothing but problems with this drive.i've been unable to make back-up copies of DVDs & CDs because it will not let me through the copyright protection from the movies or music disc.Has anyone else had this problem & if so please tell me how you corrected it or if i'm stuck with it?

5-0 out of 5 stars The best +R/RW DVD burner
Buy this burner, it is the best +R/RW burner in my opinion, I researched for over 3 months before decided on this HP DVD300e (external, dvd300i is internal).I bought this from Dell.com 1 month ago with $90 discount coupons.Very happy with it since. So far I have not had a coaster.Successfully burned with Memorex, HP, Ritek, Meritline.com own brand, Supermediastore.com own brand +R or +RW discs.Don't pay more than $2 for +R disc. and $3 for +RW discs.

I can make backup of my DVD movies &play on my Pioneer 606D &all Apex DVD players (Works with both +R and +RW discs!)Ironically, my very expensive Denon 5000 DVD player does not play the +R/RW backups, yet the cheapest DVD players like Apex have no problem playing them. You can even get a free Apex DVD player from creditgift.com

Forget about the -R/RW burners, -R/RW format is losing momentum, even one of the strong -R/RW forum member Pioneer (not to mention Sony) just announced to support +R/RW.+R/RW format is EXCLUSIVE supported by alliance members like HP, Microsoft, Dell.+R/RW design is superior &more flexible than -R/RW.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good DVD burner
The setup was easy &took me about 2 minutes. The software installation was easy too.Veritas's RecordNow, SimpleBackup, DLA &ArcSoft's ShowBiz DVD authoring softwares are included.

I cannot install the DLA because I already has Roxio's Easy CD Creastor 5.3 installed. From reading others' reviews about HP DVD200 (predecessor of this DVD300), there seemed to be many problem about with DLA.I guess HP fixed that. The installation would not allow to install another one of DLA when it detected there was one already installed. But that is no problem with me as I use Roxio's DLA.DLA allows one to use the drive like a harddrive. One can click/drag from Explorer or save from applications the files to the drive.(too bad Microsoft does not include this as part of the OS, so that there would not be so many this DLA conflicts out there)

Veritas RecordNow is probably the best software included, I am so impressed with it now I use it exclusive, drop my old favorite Roxio Easy CD Creator.

So far I am very happy with this burner, no coaster burning with Memorex +R or +RW discs.I hear Ritek, HP (of course) &Verbatim discs work fine with this burner too.I did not bother try other discs as I can get Memorex disc for $2 and $3 respectively.

Get this burner! ... Read more
