More on LaCie
Maybe other reviewers are using the wrong OS.I've been using the same LaCie external drive for over 4 years now, through 2 OS's and various inceptions of them without a hitch.The drive continues to work without any effort from me.I've been using LaCie since back in the days of SCSI peripherals and they've never steered me wrong.Top notch quality, top notch support.Of course though, I'm using a Mac, so there may be some disparity in the level of support other OS's provide their peripherals as well as the support offered by the manufacturer.Which ever the case, LaCie treats its Mac users well.

avoid it
Lacie are getting the wrong end of the stick from me. The fact that this company refuses to update drivers for old hardware for new versions of an OS is simply a farce in this day and age.

Lacie refuse to develop drivers to support a new OS or even an update. Back in the days of NT they would not even bring out Win2k support for the systems. When XP arrived most of their hardware the year before was simply left to dry up with age.

In short if you buy Lacie then it will only perform to your current system specs. Any changes to the OS and chances are you will be shelling out more doe for new hardware.

Simply excellent drive
I bought this for my laptop because it did not have a dvd drive. It worked like a charm. Plugged into my pcmica card with usb2.0 ports. No drivers or anything..

Don't buy this product
Owning this product has been a lousy experience.While installation seemed easy and the product worked well at the first trial, that quickly changed after the first reboot.The company does not supply drivers or support tools for XP (I have a plain but new Dell computer).The time and effort spent trying to solve all the interoprability issues with this product has offset the initial savings manyfold.Next time I'll buy from a better known manufacturer that provide a minimum amount of support tools! ... Not Suitable for Some Older PCs
I purchased this CD-RW unit thinking that it would allow me to upgrade an "older" PC using this device's parallel port connection.I was optomistic and enthusiastic about the purchase and assumed that this device would solve my problem of archiving data "trapped" in a PC without CD-RW capabilities.To date, I have tried to install and use this unit on two PCs, one clone and one Dell GX1 unit, both using the parallel port connection.With the clone, I struggled, but was able to archive some, but only a small fraction of my data.The performance of the clone, however, rapidly degraded and ultimately resulted in a crash of the system that was "irretrievable".On the Dell, the installation of the software alone would result in a system crash anytime the unit was plugged in to the parallel port.When unplugged, the system performance was seriously degraded.In attempting to uninstall the software with the provided CD, the system became unbootable upon restarting.

I have worked with the support folks at the mannufacturer upon several occasions, and they told me that these problems were not previously encountered and they tried to be of assistance.Ultimately, however, their assistance was insufficient to allow the unit to work on either of these two "older units".I note that the operating system on both units is NT 4, and that might be a factor (albeit that NT 4 installation is clained to be feasible).Of greater concern is that the provided software in-and-of-itself degraded system performanse and resulted in fatal crashes requiring rebuilding of system software.So, not only did the device prove not to work on the older PCs, but it seriously damaged the system software.

My recommendation would be to avoid this unit on all PCs of "older" vintage, as I am 0/2 in getting this device to work on said units (e.g. pre-USB PCs).To be fair, this unit may work fine on newer units, but then again this unit would seem to be best suited to older PCs without CD-R capabilities...I have not tried to use this unit on more recent PCs/notebooks, but I am now afraid to do so, fearing that it will result in yet additional system crashes.

Upgrade That Old Notebook
Despite the salesman's best effort to entice me with the latest models of fully loaded notebooks, I forged ahead and bought the Backpack 212010 CD-RW/DVD-ROM combo.Although I had my doubts whether my three-year-old IBM notebook would be up to receiving a USB 2.0 PC cardbus and the addition of an external drive, I was determined.Much to my surprise, installation went smoothly.With three types of connections to choose from (all included), MicroSolutions could not have made it easier for those of us with elderly machines.I chose the high-speed USB, which is recommended if you want to play DVD.I have now watched Monsters Inc. and backed up my document files using the UDF software with just a few clicks of the mouse.I did find the unit to be a bit pricey.But then again I can eke a few more years out of my old but working machine ... Writing with errors after 3 months
It was great for the first 3 months. I use Nero Ultra 6 (not OEM from this product) and is up to date. After 3 months of use, it wrote with errors and cannot use those discs. Nero can varify whatever writing with it. Now, it's just a DVD-ROM, not DVD-RW double layer!

IO Magic Products...
First let me say that I do not work for IO Magic nor do I own one of their DVD drives but I do own one of their CD R/RW drives which I have had for 18 months.This has been the best little machine I have attached to my computer.It is a 52x24x52 drive and I have had absolutely no problems with it.I've actually had more problems with my Iomega Zip drive.I purchased it from Best Buy, actually it was a gift and I've grown quite attached to it. Not once have I had to contact IO Magic for anything regarding this drive and I am considering purchasing their DVD R/RW.

I haven't always had this much success with other electronic devices.I have worked in manufacturing where the boards for electronic devices are built and where they are put together.I've even worked for a company making the chips that go into most computers.While they all strive toproduce the highest quality product they can, and quality control is pretty strict, there are still a few chips, boards, and thus finished products that slip through and end up getting shipped out and sold to the consumer.It does not mean that the company itself is producing a defective product as a rule.They can't afford to.

I've purchased Sony products, one of the most reputable companies in the electronics business, that didn't work once I turned them on.I've had to return two or three products before I got one that worked.I gave my sister a GE toaster oven for Christmas.It caught on fire after the second time she used it.GE has been producing electrical appliances forever.So just keep this in mind when you get a defective product.

Unreliable, expensive
First, let me point out that you can get a namebrand (NEC, Toshiba, etc.) internal DL/all-format DVD burner for under $80; try Amazon and Newegg.I found this I/O Magic at my local computer store so I bought it.Big mistake.The drive reads DVDs slower than my 3-year-old Iomega (no relation!) and write speed (on DVD-Rs) is nowhere near as advertised.Worse, about half the time it would not recognize my DVD-Rs when first inserted.This is a terrible product.Luckily I returned it for a full refund.Then I found out I could buy a better brand on Newegg for less.

This was my first I/O Magic product.I just read online reviews of their hard drive products and looks like this company's products suck big-time.They also sell under the Hi-Val brand, so beware.

Good value for the money
I've got this device from Staples store for little over $60 and I like it. I've seen many bad reviews for this item, mostly due to reasons that are not related to the device itself, such as bad media or bad "INTERFACE" BETWEEN the CHAIR AND the KEYBOARD. As funny as it may sounds, many reviewers just do not know how to use DVD Recorder.

Once you will get full version of Nero Burning ROM, and will update firmware (update software comes with the device), you will be settled.

Bottom line - if you need cheap and good quality DVD Burner - IDVD16DD is a good choice.

Slow writing, has format issue too.
I bought this DVD burner and installed it on my PC (HP workstation xw4100 , 2.0 GHz CPU, 512 MB Memory). Even though I can use this DVD burner, but I am dissappointed for the following reasons:

(1). Slow writing speed: Usually I can only have 0.4-0.8 x speed for CD-R media, far less than the 16 x advertised.

(2). Format Isuues: I used Nero Express to make some DVDs, I found they can not be read by some DVD ROM, such as my Dell Dimension 4100's NEC DV 5700A DVD/CD ROM . While DVD made by my friend using other DVD burner can be read by it.

Thus I don't want to recommend this product. Checking the cnet.com for DVD burner review to buy another one.

P.S. I saw good rating of this product on circuitcity.com , so I bought it. Beware of Sony DVD Burners!!
My Sony DVD drive is not even 2 years old and has now stopped working. For me to get it fixed, it will cost me $20 for them to troubleshoot it and $170 to fix it!!!That is more than it costs to buy a new burner.The warranty is only 1 year.Their customer service is also horrible if you ever have a problem.I just want to warn people before they go buying Sony computer products.

No problems at all.
I've had this drive for about three weeks now and I'v encountered no problems at all with it. I've burned movies to dvd-/+ r and rw discs as well as cd-r/rw discs and haven't had a bad burn yet. I use Intervideo DVD Copy, Nero 6 (not the software of it that came with the drive since I already owned Nero 6) and so far Fuji and Sony discs (cds and dvds) along with Windows XP home edition. I have a Pentium 4/ 2.80 GHz processor with 1 GB ram so that's far above the minimum requirements of the drive, but I doubt that has anything to do with it. It's a great external drive so far and worked as soon as I plugged it into my computer using the USB 2.0 port. Windows XP recognized it immediately and I popped in a dvd and watched it and then burned one to test it out and everything was fine. Since then no problems. As far as the drive's physical design, it seems plenty sturdy and nothing on it seems fragile and likely to break. The tray only seems like it would break if I forcefully pushed down on it (but what drive wouldn't if that was done to it?). Overall, I'm very happy with my purchase and am looking forward to when the availabilty of dual layered dvdrs increases and the price of those same dual layered discs drops. But for now it deals with regular 4.7GB dvdrs and cdrs just fine.

Works Fantastic, effortless
I bought and intalled this drive on a computer below specifications.I am running it on a Pentium III 550 running Windows XP.Have burned many discs and have never had a problem.I have it in the upright position and just hit the open/close button and never touch the plastic door or fear breaking it per the previous review.

Great software, no issues with anything.Everything just runs a bit slower since my computer is below spects.

DOES NOT WORK CHEAP BUILD QUALITY
I purchased this drive being excited to be on the cutting edge with it's dual layer support. I was very dissappointed with it. The build quality is very cheap, the drive door is light plastic and will easily break off when open if you are not careful. I have tried burning to DVD with about a half dozen different disc brands and none of them are working. I am refering to single layer standard discs as I have not yet tried the dual layer discs. I have tried 1 times burns speeds up to four times burn speeds. I have tried several different software burning products and none of them work, even the Nero Burning Rom that shipped with this drive does not work in DVD Video mode. I can't believe it. I am returning this drive to Amazon for a full refund. STAY AWAY FROM THIS DRIVE. Windows XP recognizes the drive okay but no software can burn to it. A waste of a good idea
It is not what I espected to be, altough it perform its funtion as it says in the box, it could have been better if worked as a real interface tv/pc, also, I needed to buy a controler to see movies in the pc, someting like this should be included whit the intalation software

It's a very good 'portable' DVD. Image quality is very good. At this prize for a mini machine, I think it's my 'best' buy.

A disappointment!
I bought this since it could interface to both my laptop PC and my TV.Great concept, but poor execution.Massive artifacts/pixellation on DVDs with any kind of compression.Also, it does not play MP3 files at the correct bit rates.Back it goes!

Some good, mostly bad
Let's start with what I liked.The unit was small and apparently well manufactured.It had lots of setup options and was usable right out of the box.It is really nice to have a DVD player I can use on a computer as well as a TV.However some fundamental problems forced me to return the unit.

1 - The remote is cute but totally disfunctional.It is really small which seems good on the surface but it is just too small to use.The letters are so small you cannot read them without a magnifying glass.Furthermore, it has almost no range so you have to be very close for it to work at all.
2 - The picture is not great.There is lots of pixelization and artifacts.
3 - I didn't care for the open/close functionality or the position of the on/off button.

I would only recommend this unit for a person that didn't care about picture quality or using the remote control.

Not all software included...
The only complaint I have (so far) with this product is that the installation disk didn't have all the necessary software for the drive to work on my computer.I bought it primarily to use as a DVD-ROM on my laptop, and so I was very disappointed when I put in a DVD and tried to watch it and the computer told me I did not have a DVD Decoder installed.

There is no troubleshooting advice in the instruction manual, and there is no phone number to call for technical support.So I ended up taking Windows suggestion and purchasing a DVD Decoder online ($15).The drive now allows me to play DVDs on my computer, but I was significantly annoyed to find that on top of the regular purchase price, I had to spend more money on something that should have been included with the product.

Even including the extra expense, I think this drive is a good deal.I looked into getting an external DVD-ROM as well as maybe getting an external case and an internal DVD-ROM to put in it, and I decided that this drive was a better deal.I figure that whenever I get a TV, I'll be able to use the drive on that, too.So it ends up being a pretty decent deal for the amount of money. ... Forgive Amazon, guys
I can understand the frustration of other buyers as I had to return the wrong drive twice. My understanding is that what Amazon actually got were just the CD RW drives and the price too fits that category but erroneously they had labeled them as CD RW DVD combos. I am not sure what Office Depot and Circuit City are shipping but their price suggests that they should be shipping the combo. But folks, we need to admit that Amazon is doing a good job and at time things might go wrong since humans do fail at times. It took a while for Amazon to understand the problem and once they knew the problem they removed it from their inventory. The delay in the reordering should be due to the fact that Amazon does not have the combo drives with them. I actually ended up ordering the "SAMSUNG Internal 52x32x52x CD-RW plus DVD-ROM Combo Drive". I haven't tested it properly still but so far I like the drive. I will post my comments under that drive very soon. Again folks, let us accept the fact that Amazon too can err at times and we need to be accommodative. Overall their service and prices and the quality of products are very good.

Absurdly poor service
Like many others, I've ordered Amazon numerous times, but this instance was atrocious.Having shipped the wrong item like the other reviewers, I decided to opt for a replacement, only to find that the estimated delivery date would be 2 months from today!What's more surprising is that I can go ahead and order from Office Depot via Amazon.com and receive it in 7 days along with the $15 increase.

Shipped the wrong drive twice
Have never had any problems with Amazon before, but this time they kept shipping the wrong drive and now they are refunding the purchase price. I don't want a refund, I want the drive I ordered since they still show it to be in stock. Had problems with Buy.com before and they made everything right - a good retailer. Return shipping was free so that was nice, but still no drive and had the hassle of having to go to UPS drop off twice.

Never again
I was shipped an incorrect drive 2 times and given the run around about a problem with their bins.Be very careful if ordering this drive, because you will not get the drive mentioned.Never doing business with amazon again.

SOHC-5232K not SOHR-5238S
Ordered 2 from Amazon.com and was shipped SOHR-5238S drives, which are CD-RW drives only. 52x32x52. They are the new version of the 52327S drives that had EEproms.
The correct drives are good drives and do read DVD,s. Do a search on Amazon.com and look at all the products listed "new and used" and you will see that a lot of them list the wrong drive. Look at the SKU number. It should be SOHC-5232K.
It should have "DVD" right in the middle of the tray.

Don't buy this product, its total waste of time
I bought this from online store, spent almost 3 days to record
some dvd , nothing works, you can not copy dvd to dvd if it is a commercial dvd, you have to capture it first, to do that you have to play it and press all menu buttons on the source dvd , after capturing it if you play it , the quality is bad and I can not play that in my dvd player, I can play that only in computer , its total waster of my time, returing it with 15% restocking fee ...

This thing is a five pound paperweight.Hotburn Pro software bundled with the product doesn't work.First it kept freezing up, now it doesn't even recognize the burner even though the computer shows both my cd burner and the Quick Touch functioning properly.Tech support is virtually nonexistant, they correspond through e-mail back and forth that get's answered by someone different each time.First they tell you to uninstall any other cd burning software you have on your computer, including Windows Media Player!!!Then when all that fails and you've trashed any possibility of burning anything, they tell you to call a toll number to attempt to resolve the problem.So I either have to pay long distance, or use up my cell phone minutes to maybe solve my problem.Don't waste your money. ...
