I bought it for the price and must admit I was pleasently surprised by its performance. It has been working flawlessly and its data extraction speed is amazing. I also bought a CDRW from the same company and they work fine together. Installtion was a snap.

You get what you pay for...
I used to think that all DVD drives were basically the same.So when I needed a new one for my computer, I simply bought the cheapest one I could find: this model.As it turns out, not all DVD-ROM hardware is created equal.I noticed immediately that this one is quite a bit louder than most that I've come across; it frequently sounds as if I have a powerful fan running in my room.Also, its performance has rapidly deteriorated.The poor thing has trouble with even the cleanest of discs.Frequently when I watch movies on my computer, the sound will cut out and the image will skip while the drive makes noises like a chainsaw in the distance.Occasionally, it will stop spinning the disc altogether, wait a few seconds, and then take a second try.The company website is practically vacant and offers no online support.It's been nine months since I bought this drive, and while I could invoke the warranty, I have no desire to.I'd rather pay for a better product than be saddled with another one of these lemons.I would strongly recommend spending the extra five or ten dollars to get a product from a respected company. ... Eh, don't get your hopes up
Although the idea of this product sounds great the one I bought had several issues. For some reason I get literally shocked by this device when Iuse headphones and walk down the street. It's like the static electricity finds it's way up the headphone cord from the cd player and into my ears. I also had issues with the battery life, especially in the winter with the cold weather. Eventually I couldn't even use the cd player because it would't play. I could hear beeps for volume changes and track changes but nothing else. The burner still works though but otherwise it is useless.

good at making CD costers
I bought this for my thinkpad X31 to be used as CDRW/DVD player, not so much for music listening. I got iriver cd MP3/WMA player for that. I do not think there are too many MP3/WMA player that could beat iriver's feature.anyways, going back to Sony... it seems to be working fine as CD/DVD reader but I haven't yet had success with recording/writing to CD yet (except for making 4 CD costers for my desk). I have had 5 different kind of CDRW that I have used and never had problem until this one (never read manual to operate). I used there provided software and windows explorer but neither one seem to complete the writing successfully. I am following the manual (I actually read the maual) correctly. I'll try couple more time with different setting and if still doesn't work than I'll have to return them.

Oh, it's ready to rock.
I don't understand what JK-47 is complaining about. If you have 1200 songs, you should have them arranged in folders. Divide by genre, artist, album, etc. Then you can find your song without this 1200 clicking. What's up with that? :d

The thing has a lithium ion battery built in. On top of that, one gives you the option to power it with batteries. I am confused about this complaint. They are giving you a bonus. You don't want to use the cradle? Don't use it.

I think what JK-47s problem might have been is that maybe he was just looking for a super streamlined MP3 player. If all you are looking for is an MP3 player, this should obviously not be your first choice. Look into an iPod or something.

This device is basically for someone who's looking for an external DVD, CD-RW drive who happens to be in the market for an MP3 player also. I am one of those people and I have to say I am incredibly happy with it. It does everything it's prescribed to do very well.

One thing you should consider: iTunes only seels MP4s, and Napster only sells WMA files, neither of which this device supports. It's a pain to try to buy music online and put it in this thing. You need to burn it into a CD and rip it back. Blech. Oh well.

Excellent Player - Extremely Useful
I have a Toshiba tablet and needed a portable all-purpose drive for it; this one is perfect.It is extremely useful, with the ability to write CDs and read DVDs.In addition, you can disconnect it from the computer, and it functions as a portable MP3 cd/dvd player.It plays MP3 DVDs, which can hold about 1,000 songs (4.7 GB).It also has a memory stick slot, which acts like a USB mass storage device when you attach it to a computer.You can transfer MP3s to the memory stick and play them with the portable drive.I haven't had the opportunity to test this yet, though.Another useful aspect of this drive is the battery capacity.In addition to the internal rechargeable battery (10 hrs MP3 playback, 1.5 hrs DVD video playback on computer) it comes with a portable battery powered docking station (rechargeable batteries not included for station).With the CD player connected to the station, battery life is extended to 30 hrs MP3 playback or 5 hrs DVD video - enough to watch at least a couple of movies.The station is small and very easy to transport.Finally, when using the drive as a portable player, it has an 8 MB buffer, so playback is very shock resistant.The only problem I have had with the drive is that it doesn't come with a clip or case for attaching it at the waist.I plan to just buy a case of some kind, so this shouldn't be a problem.Overall, I got even more than I bargained for with this drive. ... Piece of Junk on Win98 and WinMe
This product is totally dead on my Win98SE and WinME machines.

For Win98SE, the buyer is admonished with a large bright piece of paper in the package saying that if the buyer wants USB2 support, then go to their web site and download the driver.However, if you go to their web site http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/pna/article/0,,2076_4251_51968,00.html and look at the driver, it's a PDF file that, guess what, admonishes the buyer to download the driver from their website!I've already notified them months ago that they have a bad machine and useless links, but they refuse to fix either, and instead keep putting up more glowing press releases on their website about this piece of junk.

On the WinME Sony Vaio laptop that I have, it is non-functional on *both* the USB and Firewire connectors.

My advice is to stay away from this rather poorly supported and dubious piece of equipment.

Great but..
I work onsite at client often and this baby saves me time when a client's machine doesn't have any dvd capacity. I don't use it with a laptop, but to add dvd abilities to a desktop machine.
By, the way, even though it isn't advertised as mac compatible, it is, if you have OSX 10.2.8 or greater. There's nothing to install, Just plug it in (and turn it on, like I didn't do).
There's only two issues I've got. There's no pouch to store all the stuff it comes with (power cord, power brick, USB and firewire cables, driver install disk), and the fire wire cord is 4 pin on both ends. It would have been nice if they included a 4 pin to 6 pin adapter.

Excellent option for laptop users
This thing is sweet.I've got a Dell Latitude laptop and this thing has been the perfect addition to my system.It's got both USB2 and Firewire connections and it burns in DVD+R/RW and DVD-R/RW formats.I've gone through a 25-spindle of DVDs and have yet to have any problems or standalone player compatibility issues.It's also really thin and light--very portable. ... Maybe a class-action lawsuit would get Iomega's attention
This product is horrible.In the 20 years I have been tinkering with computers I have never come across such a worthless product (except for that Commodore 64 5 1/4 floppy drive that NEVER worked either).Out of the box, it failed to burn a single disk and locked-up three different systems, including my brand new laptop.The problem, random I/O errors, and system freezes.After 45 minutes on the tech support line (on my dime) I was finally given an RMA number and told to ship the unit back.A remanufactured unit showed up about two weeks later and the good news is that it can now produce one successful burn out of 3 or 4 tries (I guess if your media is cheap enough and you have a lot of time to waste, this would be acceptable).All of my successful burns are with third-party software.I have yet to get a single success with Hotburn Pro.I have tried Fugifilm, TDK, and TY media, all the same result.I have tried Nero, DVD decrypter, CDburner Pro, and Hotburn Pro.I have gone into msconfig and loaded minimal components, checked my drivers, etc. and have basically spent hours trying to get this thing to work consistently.Random I/O errors and freezes still plague the use of this unit.Hotburn Pro is another dismal story, too long to get into here.Read some of the comments above.

a problem instead of a solution
After wasting 15 DVD's, I still did not succeed to end a writing session without a blue screen and a reboot. For each attempt I tried to do something like installing a patch, downloading the latest version of HotBurnPro, uninstalling Roxio, defragmenting my HD, performing a scandisk ... No success yet. Is DVD writing not mature? or was Iomega a bad choice? Next time I borrow from a friend before I buy.

worst product I've ever purchased
Where to begin?It gave my Dell the Blue Screen of Death, locked up my computer, evaporated my active desktop.After trying to work with Iomega for 4 months, they sent me a replacement.No more Blue Screen, but no DVDs, either, just a huge pile of coasters.When the bundled MyDVD burning software tries to burn, it spits out the DVD and I get a "device error" error message.And yes, we downloaded the firmware update.Warning!Before you purchase, go go www.iomega.com and read the user forum for this product.The near unanimous verdict:completely nonfunctional product.I trusted Iomega, but don't make that mistake yourself.

A BIG disappointment.
This is a very useful product - if you like making $3 coasters.I was in need of an external DVD writer, and purchased this product in part based on Iomega's experience and reputation in the portable device space.I am a network engineer by trade, so needless to say I am somewhat resourceful in troubleshooting P.C. hardware and O/S issues.I have try have tried to create NTSC DVDs from projects created using the Sonic MyDVD software that is bundled with the device, as well as Intervideo WinDVD Creator, using several different PCs running both Windows 2000 and XP (fully patched).So far I have been able to create exactly ONE usable DVD in approximately 15 attempts.The problem is roughly the same each time - the software locks at the end of the burn phase.And, in typical device-with-bundled-software fashion, neither Iomega or Sonic's online tech support offers advice or even recognition of an issue.If you still want to roll the dice with this thing, my advice would be to purchase from somewhere where you have had good experience with the return policy.

Major disappointment
I've owned a lot of Iomega products over the past 10 years and have come to trust them. But this drive is a major disaster.

I have experienced most of the problems that other reviewers have complained about, including random hangs while writing, failure to recognize various types of media, undocumented I/O errors, and bizarre software problems about media sizes being miscalculated, and terribly slow write/format speeds. I will say that when I contacted their tech support, they suggested I switch the unit from my USB2.0 PCI card to the motherboard's USB1.1 port, and it did work much better, but of course it was unacceptably slow.

They do warn on their support page that USB2.0 add-in cards are not supported, but only built-in USB hardware. I don't know if that actually makes sense from an engineering standpoint; it sounds like a dodge to me. Why do all my other USB2.0 peripherals -- including an Iomega CDRW unit -- work on this same card? My guess is that this product was badly designed and probably rushed to market.

The only good things about it are HotBurn is pretty easy to use, the unit is quiet, and it looks nice. ... Read more
