5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent card and cable!
No muss, no fuss! The card installed without a hitch in my Windows XP machine. It was immediately recognized by the system and I was transferring video from my camcorder within minutes. Even the cable is very high quality.

5-0 out of 5 stars Effortless installation
My Dell is getting a bit old, 5 yrs, 700 mhz, and I wondered how well a firewire card & ipod software would install, and would ipod transfers work well with this computer.I had upgraded from win 98 to win 2000 pro ~ 4 years ago, and love windows 2000's stability.

This belkin card went in EFFORTLESSLY!No software, no menus, nothing.Put card in, restart computer, and it WORKS PERFECTLY with nothing else to do. (The apple ipod software was a breeze also, and very robust, but did have to install web software updates from Apple).

I've had my 20GB 4G ipod about a week, and it is doing fantastic with this older computer!!I've filled 8gb so far, moving my musicmatchlibrary, etc. and the longest sync. was maybe 5-8 minutes for 5gb?, and I suspect the firewire is not the bottleneck.

Thanks Belkin!

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to install in Windows XP
I recieved the card yesterday. Today I got up early and installed the card in 10 minutes. As soon as I turned the computer on, Windows XP recognized the card and the digital camcorder it was attached to it. The transfer of video was smooth an easy just using Microsoft Windows Movie Maker 2. I still have to get and install a more powerfull video production software, but I believe it will work great. ... The 2-in-1 card for today's fastest peripherals

At 400 megabits per second, the FireWire/1394/i.LINK standard is ideal for multi- media input devices such as digital video (DV) camcorders, and high-speed storage devices, scanners, and CD-RW drives.

In fact, you can "daisy chain" up to 62 peripherals from the two external FireWire ports on your DuoConnect card.

USB 2.0 combines high-speed performance with the plug-and-play simplicity that has made USB peripherals so popular. USB 2.0 products include external hard drives, CD-RWs, DVD-Rs, and scanners can run at up to 480 Mbps. That's 40 times faster than USB 1.1 peripherals!

DuoConnect's three external ports provide maximum compatibility and connectivity to the newest USB 2.0 devices as well as USB 1.1 devices.

Highlights

  • Combination FireWire and USB 2.0 card - add both high-speed I/0 standards to your computer with a single card; no need to open your computer twice, or occupy two PCI slots
  • Complete DV Editing and Creation Software Package - includes video editing software and Sonic MyDVD for creating VideoCD, or DVD-on-CD discs
  • Full USB-IF Hi-Speed Certification - guarantees USB 1.1 and USB 2.0 compatibility and hassle-free operation
  • Includes 6-foot FireWire cable - connect your DV camera easily and with maximum throughput with this fully tested 6-pin to 4-pin FireWire cable - a $30 value!
  • Works on both Macs and PCs - universal design works on PC-compatible computers and Macs as well. See Product Specifications - "System Requirements" for more detailed information

2-0 out of 5 stars Fast but Flawed; Mac users should avoid!
I purchased the Adaptec AUA-3230 DuoConnect card at my local retailer for use with my "Quicksilver" model Power Mac G4 (Dual 1GHz).My built-in ports had gone flakey so I wanted a quality PCI expansion card to replace their functionality.Adaptec used to make some of the fastest SCSI cards around, so I decided to give their product a try.I picked the DuoConnect so I could get some USB 2.0 ports while I was at it.

Well, it's very fast -- when copying between internal and external devices, it is faster than Apple's built-in FireWire was!Unfortunately, it has problems -- of the crashing sort. When a firewire device is connected and the Mac is put to sleep, it doesn't make it to Deep Sleep mode (fans keep running), and wakes up again.(This happened with both a bus-powered iPod and a self-powered LaCie d2 drive. The LaCie showed truly strange behavior of spinning down, then up, then down, six times in a row before finally stopping!)The only way out is to turn the Mac off.I contacted Adaptec tech support via their web page.

After a brief of confusion in which they thought I was using USB devices, Adaptec support tested the configuration themselves, confirmed the problem, and suggested that I either disable Sleep mode, or return the card to the retailer from which I purchased it.Following are their own words:

**********
In our unofficial testing of the Firewire 4300 and DuoConnect AUA-3121 and AUA-3020, it seems that the controller itself is compatible with Deep Sleep. Yet as soon as any devices are attached to either the USB or FireWire/1394 ports, the system will not be able to recover from the Deep Sleep function.

It appears that this issue is due more to the PCI bus itself rather than to the DuoConnect adapter. When Deep Sleep is initiated, the PCI bus and attached peripherals will be powered down. Yet because the PCI controller is not directly powered from the motherboard, there is no way to send a signal to the attached devices to 'wake' them. This means that a signal can be sent to the attached devices to put them into a power down status, but no signal can be sent to revive them from that state. For that reason the Firewire and DuoConnect card is not fully compliant with Apple's Deep Sleep.

What you may want to do at this point is to open up the Energy Saver control panel and set the power settings to "never" to disable Sleep. Yet if this is not an option, then unfortunately there is no workaround for this issue and you may want to return the controller to the place of purchase for a refund.

We apologize for the delay in getting this information to you. It did take some time to replicate the issue and search for a possible solution. We hope that you understand.
**********

So, in summary: very fast FireWire 400/USB 2.0 card, but useless if your Power Mac ever sleeps.Adaptec's tech support was prompt and didn't send me "form letter" style replies, so props for that!I'll try Adaptec again in the future due to their support team (it's also why I give this card 2 stars instead of just 1), but I'll always beware and make sure there is a good return policy, just in case.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect....a MUST HAVE for film editors
After shopping around for a Firwire card I finally found this huge deal!3-Port USB and 2-Port Firewire for only $19.99! DO NOT pay full price for this item.Go to the used and new, there is a new one for $19.99.It takes a little longer to ship out, but this is a great deal.

This item takes about 3 secs to install with XP...all you do is put it in, and you're ready.I was up burning dvds within 5 mins.

5-0 out of 5 stars flawless installation
I was a bit nervous about buying this card after reading some of the reviews published here on Amazon, but I did anyway--I wanted to upgrade my computer's USB jacks, and I wanted firewire for the convenience of using that with my iPod.

At any rate, my fears went unrealized. Installation under Windows XP went without a hitch: the thing was ready to go five minutes after I opened the box. I can't say I've tried it under different operating systems, but under XP, it's a dream.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant product even on old P3 450Mhz
The only irony like the two previous users mentioned, is that there r some inconsistencies with the software drivers. I realized the system becoming slightly slower in performance (but then again these peripherals were optimized for the new P4 etc.) I use it daily especially with external hard drives and Bluetooth and printers and numerous devices.

I am fiddling now with video feeds via the firewire. Am sure it will be flawless. If anyone is considering a good upgrade to older machines, then get this card! (after a memory upgrade this would b the most sensible upgrade one can do)

5-0 out of 5 stars Works great
I bought this Adaptec AUA-3020 for use in my Dell Dimension 8200 (P4 2Ghz) with Windows XP Pro SP1. My computer originally doesnot have firewire and USB2.0 (it has 4 USB1 though). All 5 PCI slots were full with VGA, Ethernet, Sound, Promise Ultra ATA133 (for my additional HDs), and Firewire from Pinnaclesys. I was a little skeptical to use this product when I read other reviewers that has the same system (tony8gj from Redmond, WA). The only difference is he bought 3121 with internal USB and firewire while I bought 3020 without the internal ones. After I received the package, I read the instruction which is fairly easy and straightforward. I turn off the computer and all cables, took off my Pinnaclesys firewire and replace with this Adaptec 3020. Put all the cables back to where they were, (I didnot plug anything yet to the new Adaptec) and start the comp. Windows XP shows "Found new hardware" and rearrange them (I rearranged my USB1.1). Then I see that XP found this Adaptec but it says Texas Instrument for the firewire host controller (I guess the chip made by TI), and so on. It went smooth. Then I put the USB/firewire cables to this new Adaptec ports. All my devices were recognized fast and ready to use. I tested all my devices and they are all fine. Just make sure, before installing this and any other hardware, to check and update your flash BIOS from your computer manufacturer and also your Windows operating system from windowsupdate.com. 3-0 out of 5 stars Incompatable with Emachines M5405
This card does not come with a specific driver, actually it uses the generic driver provided by Microsoft in Window XP. A Code 10 error appeared in the Device Manager -- the device does not start when I connected it to my M5405. I sent the notebook back to the manufacturer and was told nothing wrong with the PCMCIA slot in the machine. So I guess the problem is with the card. There is no driver that can be downloaded in the website for the card which makes difficult to correct the problem.

5-0 out of 5 stars Works great with Sony Camcorder
I have a Sony DRC30 camcorder and it works fine with both my window XP and 2000 laptops. The software is great for download but creates files of massive size comparing to microsoft movie maker (may be MMM downloads in compressed form).

The CD/DVD burning options are disabled and to get them you have to buy a full scale version from Ulead.

5-0 out of 5 stars PCMCIA cards WILL NOT POWER IPODS!
Some people are rating this card down incorrecty. To set the matter straight:

The PCMCIA bus specification does not provide enough power to allow the PCMCIA cards to power external devices. Therefore, the PCMCIA Firewire cards do not provide enough power to the Firewire bus.

NO PCMCIA firewire cards can charge an ipod by itself (using the laptop's battery).PCI firewire cards (the kind for you desktop) CAN, but PCMCIA cards (the ones for you laptop) CANNOT.It is not a "feature" that this card lacks.

HOWEVER: Some PCMCIA cards come with an input for an external power adaptor, including this Startech card (as another reviewer mentioned). So basically, you plug an external adapter into the port (which you can see in the picture) and the external adapter will then power the firewire card, letting it charge your ipod.As far as I can tell, this feature isn't available on a lot of cheaper models. But you WILL have to have an external power adapter to use this feature.

So again, NO PCMCIA cards can self power an ipod while charging.Don't rate a product down for something that's not possible.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great with XP and Canon DV Camcorder
Bought this to capture DV from Canon ZR20 to Toshiba Laptop with XP Home.Works great.Able to capture video to PC without loss of quality.Editing is easier with MovieMaker than with the included Ulead, but Ulead seems more versatile.I would definitely recommend this card for anyone trying to do the same thing.

4-0 out of 5 stars Powered Firewire is possible
One of the reviews above states that this adapter won't provide power to devices such as the Apple iPod.You actually can power these devices by plugging an external power adapter into the card. This feature appears to be undocumented, but the plug is clearly visible to the left of the 1394 ports.

I phoned the Startech customer support, and they said that you can use any generic DC adapter, with the following settings: 12 volt DC, 3 amp, and a plug with positive (+) in the centre.

Hope it helps. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars You'll need a DVD burner...
...to really take advandage of this. Installation was super easy, although I ran into the TI thing like another reviewer. Oh well. Not much more I can say about this product; it works and that's all that really matters.

1-0 out of 5 stars Does not recognize my sony camcorder
I purchased this card based on the positive reviews here. However, my sony camcoder (TRV20) was not detected.I'm seeking technical support now. After I get their reply I will update this review.I use Windows XP pro.

Although this is a good card (according to reviews), it may not work for certain camcorders.

5-0 out of 5 stars Could it get any easier?
I was able to install the card with minimal effort or difficulty. The whole process was actually easier than I thought it would be.Within about 30 minutes of opening the package I had read the installation paperwork, installed the card, and had begun capturing video from my DV camcorder. The accompanying video editing software was also easily installed and useful as an application for novice editors.I installed it into a Dell Dimension 4600 running Windows XP Pro and my camcorder is a Canon Optura 20 if that makes any difference.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to install and use!
I bought this card because it came with a cable.Giving the card only a 5 rating. Not super impressed by the editing software, MyDVD.It only burns VCD's with basic functions. In order to burn DVD's you have to purchase the upgrade. I will probably end up purchasing more sophisticated software for editing. I installed it on my Dell Dimension 8200 running Win XP. Plug and play just like the instuctions say.Easy to install, Win XP recognized the new hardware, couldn't be easier! Economical card, gets the job done.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great card and even better support
Got this card a year ago and it worked great connecting my XP Pro machine to my DV camcorder. More recently, got a Firewire drive and had some problems. Turned out I needed a patch from Microsoft, but Adaptec support is without a doubt the best free support I've used. Real dialogs with knowledgeable techs - no form letters. Works great now with both the hard drive and camera together. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Ergonomic Design, But Not Sturdy

5-0 out of 5 stars Great.
This is one amazing product, I got this for my laptop Inspiron 8100. Though, I already had a 4 pin firewire port but the problem as you may or may not know is, 4-pin firewire can not supply power to the connected device. Most of the firewire devices i have are dependent on bus-power e.g. Compact Flash reader, so I chose adaptec card bus as it have an optional power input line so the connected devices can draw power.
Overall, its very handy and useful plus the installation was smooth (you just plug & play, XP will instantly detect it).

p.s. just a little thought, firewire have nothing to do with "video editing" nor it will improve with using different software. FIREWIRE is a communication standard i.e. IEEE 1394/1394b , the later is also known as FireWire800 and gives twice as fast speed as normal firewire.

5-0 out of 5 stars Plug and chug with a Sony DCRTV310 camera
Installation was a snap.
I was downloading movies from my Sony Digital Camera and burning movies on a CDR in 10 minutes.

3-0 out of 5 stars get adaptec's duo connect instead
Adaptec has a Duo Connect PCMCIA card that has both a firewire and a USB 2.0 port. This is perfect for video editing on a PC laptop: connect a camera to the firewire port and an external hard drive to the USB 2.0 port. When not video editing, you can use the extra USB port for your printer, mouse, etc., or keep the hard drive attached to run games.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thank God someone made DV editing easy
I bought this card after searching for a solution to transfer DV from my Sony DV cam to my PC. I have tried several things but this one is the best. Easy installation and plug and play is awesome. I wouldn't use anything else.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great firewire pccard
This pccard is a very nice card that worked without a glitch in windows xp, it didn't even need the drivers.

The card is fast, comes with great software and a cable that works great with my sony dv (i link) camera.

The only thing that wasn't included in the box was the power adapter needed if you have bus powered devices conected this card. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good retractable firewire cable
I'm a mobile user and I appreciate the well organized form factor of a retractable firewire cable.I especially like that the cable is 6 pins to 6 pins firewire and also includes a 4 pin converter/adapter that can be slipped over one of the 6 pin end to make the cable 4 pins to 6 pins firewire.Currently, I use it to connect my notebook computer to an external firewire hard drive or my iPod.

Pro's:
- convenient, small, retractable form factor...clean, simple design...no more cable messes

- easy to use...pull out the cable to desired length and it clicks into place...press a button to retract the cable
- both 6 pin to 6 pin, or 4 pin to 6 pin firewire capable (with included 4 pin adapter)

Con's:
- 4 pin adapter is a loose piece and could be lost/misplaced---this is the only reason I give 4 stars, instead of 5 stars
- labeling is a little cheap looking (stickers)...but that's being nitpicky
- a little expensive if all you want is a firewire cable but don't need the retractability ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars less expensive than some, works as advertised.
i'm using this with an canon optura 500 on a desktop pc running windows xp.it works without a hitch (as it's supposed to of course).

the price is competitive, don't get a very expensive cable, it's more of a gimmick than a performance gain.

5-0 out of 5 stars Does exactly what it should.Very useful for HDTV boxes
The 6' 4 pin to 6 pin Belkin IEEE 1394/Firewire cable does exactly what it says it should for relatively cheap. As long as you're at the 400 MB/s standard as this is, there's no need to spend $50 on a gold plated connector and superheavy isolation like the Monster cables.Firewire is designed to function up to 15' without signal degradation, and unlike analog signals the 0 and 1s of digital signals aren't subject to manipulation by electrical fields.Either they get through or they don't, so as long as these are certified under the standard you save money by not buying useless frills. It's shiny translucent silver, not black, but if you care that much about cable color you probably already have your cables hidden anyway.

The 4 pin models work with most electrical powered devices; the 6 pin models usually are for devices that need battery power.(The extra two pins carry current.)For those looking for an adapter for Comcast/Motorola HDTV-ready digital boxes, this is the cable you need. For some reason Motorola decided to use a 6 pin adapter, where almost all HDTVs and DVHS VCRs use a 4 pin.(PCs typically use 6.)I've used one for a while now to run flawless 1080i signals between my Comcast HDTV box and my DVHS VCR. Recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Cable
I got a good deal at Amazon.com, With free shipping it makes it worthwhile. The Same Cable is thirty bucks in the retail store. It looks very sturdy and doesnt flop around. It has a cool translucent look. It is braided. The contacts are of solid quality.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Deal
...This is a very good quality cable. It has a very nice fell to it. The braided sleeve gies it a "stay" not seen with the rubber sleeve cables.
I do not see the logic in spending a lot of money on cables. There are cheaper ones on Amazon.com, but ony this was eligible for the free shipping. I was familiar with how it looked since I had shopped for it in the retail store. With the free shipping (& no taxes) this is an excellent deal. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars No visible means of support
My Iogear GIC1394 was installed on a Dell Dimension 4700 Pentium 4 running Windows XP.The video capture device was not recognized.Device Manager indicates the card is not supported by Windows XP.System crashed.Spent all night restoring system.I repeatedly submitted requests for support which after 4 days have gone unanswered. What a massive waste of time and $$$.Never deal with IOGEAR.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellence.
Highly recommended. The installation was simple. XP detected the drivers and set it up instantly. Was able to hook up external hard drive without any problems. Even comes with software to create your own digital movies. Learning the software is not as easy as installing the PCI card.
Overall, very satisfied with this product.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great card
.. This was a synch to install in my XP, 2.4ghz, P4.Once in the slot, it loaded itself up, bypassing the usualWizard....I began converting analog 8 mm to digital files for editing, right off the bat.The software that came with it is clunky, taking time to get a handle on.But it produced beautiful avi and quicktime files, once I figured things out.The wma files weren't so great, but that's probably the price you pay for squeezing down a 3 minute clip for e-mail.Other files can be produced too, with the software.Am very pleased.

5-0 out of 5 stars Quick Plug and Play - Great Value
I'm using Windows XP on a 1.8ghz P4

XP detected it immediatley upon boot up.My JVC Mini-DV was also detected right away when I plugged in the firewire cable.

I also purchased the 6 foot firewire cable.I would suggest not getting a cable any shorter than 6'

If you plan on tranferring your video to VCD, you may want to invest in a good video editing program like Adobe Premiere.

I used the Windows Video Maker to capture the video and Nero Burning Rom to make the VCD.It looked "OK" on the TV.

I will be investing in some video software soon ... Read more
