1-0 out of 5 stars No Battery Replacement and No Warranty without Invoice
Just under 1 year of use the Belkin 1200 Universal UPS replace battery alarm went off.Contacted technical support, they confirmed that the battery needed replaced, but in order for them to provide warranty I had to produce an Invoice that was less than 1 year old since the battery warranty is only 1 year. I cant find the receipt so I am SOL.

And Belkin does not provide a replacement battery, so I am SOL there too.

And if you find a 3rd party replacement battery, you have to completely dis-assemble the UPS to get the battery out... very poor design in this day in age when its typical for the cheapiest of UPS to have pop/slide out batteries.

Its clear to me that this hs been designed to be a throw away UPS... which isnt fair in my book b/c ayone buying at the 1000+ level will want battery replacement.

And I too can hear the humm noise this thing makes that other users reported... its very noisy even in my server room.

My conclusion, complete waste of money... and since Belkin screwed me I wont be buying Belkin anymore regardless of the better price. But hey, you get what you pay for.. you want to gamble go ahead. Im going to get the APC Back-UPS RS BR1500.

3-0 out of 5 stars At first I was very pleased, now I'm somewhat jaded
I received the Belkin F6C120-UNV as a gift in December, 2002. It worked like a charm for 1-1/2 years. I occasionally put it through a deep-cycle test just to make sure things were in good shape and my system and monitor and peripherals would run for about 20 minutes before running out of juice.. ..plenty of time to clean up, save, print a few things, and shut down the system.

I even had my wireless access point and cable modem connected, so I would stay online for a while without power in the house (through my desktop or wireless notebook).

The only annoying behavior was that the unit will beep when you are running on battery power and there's no way to configure it not to beep. That means if you lose power during the middle of the night for a more than a couple seconds, it will beep until you tell it to stop beeping. Very annoying. Luckily we only lose power about 3-4 times a year.

The bad news; we lost power last week and the unit shut off in about 5-6 seconds! After recharging overnight, it will no longer hold a reasonable load (of say 25-30%) for more than 6-7 seconds, definitely not enough time to shut down cleanly. None of the trouble indicators were lit and the battery replacement indicator was not on. However, it was clear that the batteries were unable to handle the load any more. I learned the hard way (according to Belkin) that the batteries in this unit cannot be replaced! Also, I searched for after-market batteries and none of the popular sites list this model.

Lesson learned: many of the UPS systems out there have batteries that are not (or not easily) replaceable!

To Belkin's credit, they're replacing the entire unit free of charge (since it's only half way through it's 3 year warrantee period) even though it was a gift.

btw, in reference to the other reviewer (who has posted their review on lots of sites) who claim that the 3-second power on/off button is inconvient.. ..somebody doesn't understand the purpose of a UPS system. You're not supposed to turn the UPS off, why would anybody use the UPS to turn their PC on and off? Also, the only "hum" I ever hear is when the voltate drops too low and the AVR kicks in (which is a lifesaver if your power drops when the house A/C compressor kicks in).

5-0 out of 5 stars Great price and performance for a 1200VA UPS
I'm not sure why one of the other reviewers would use a UPS to power on/off their desktop. The purpose of a UPS is the regulate electric line input and to provide power during either a power glitch/loss or total blackout.

This UPS does the job perfectly.I run a couple of home linux servers used for httpd, smtp, pop3, imap, mysqld, online game server, etc.In other words, they're always on.My house constantly gets hit by "power glitches"; the power blinks off then rigth back on at least once a week.Of course, this is bad news for any electronic equipment, especially computers.I don't mind resetting my clocks all over the house when this happens, but it's unacceptable for computers (not that I have to reset their clocks :-)).

I had a small APC 350VA before, that was absolutely horrible. It would help for the power glitches that I have, but when the power went out for more than 1 minute, it couldn't even power up one desktop cpu and a 17" CRT.It got to the point where my wife would call it the chinese torture device (no hard feelings), because it was constantly beeping when the power went off and back on.It would not reset itself, and I'd have to turn it off and back on to get it to stop. That really defeats the purpose of the UPS, as I'd have to shutdown the computer connected to it to do this.

Back to the Belkin.I currenlty have 3 desktop computers connected, a 19" lcd and 100 MB switch.I keep the USB connected to my windows desktop. The Bulldog software is very slick. It can show you current input/output stats, as well as a log of activity.Very nice function.I've had a few glitches knock the power off and on, with not one problem in the past month.

Fortunatley, I have not had to test the UPS for it's battery power in minutes.Right now, it will shutdown my windows PC when it detects and outage.I'd like to be able to write a small script that can shutdown my linux machines as well.

Conclusion:
You can't beat this UPS for the money.APCs are way overpriced, and the Belkin stacks up to their performance hands down.I work for a nation wide computer company that uses APCs, and I'd much rather spend my money on the Belkin.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent UPS protection at a unbeatable price
I have two of these in my office and I love them. The only "real" criticism the other review had was he had to hold the power button down for 3 seconds to power the unit off. How lazy can someone be that 3 seconds is too long to press a button? The point was irrelevant considering you should never power your UPS off to make sure the batteries always have adequate power - and once they batteries are 1/2 to 1/25 low I would recommend replacing them.
I've used APC UPS's and after trying the Belkins I will never waste my money on an APC again. The Belkins provide great line conditioning with their AVR and the included software is more than enough to handle blackout situations. The operation of the Belkin units is completely silent unless your power drops below 105 volts, then they beep and produce a slight buzzing noise as they condition the line (as with every UPS that actually works). If you have a power outlet that requires excessive conditioning, I'd either move your equipment to a more stable outlet or call out an electrician to increase the amps on your outlet.
If you want to protect your system from power surges, brown outs, and black outs - I couldn't recommend the F6C120-UNV enough. If you need a UPS with remote management software for an enterprise situation, then you might be better off with an APC unit - otherwise, don't throw your money away, get the Belkin!!

3-0 out of 5 stars Good UPS If You Don't Mind the Small Inconveniences.
I have owned the F6C120-UNV for about 6 months.I also own a PK Electronics 1000VA and 500VA.The 500VA is now connected to my TV and VCR.PK Electronics has since gone out of business. While the PK's only have a serial port and probably lower quality software, I prefer them over the Belkin.I have not installed any software which comes with my UPS's.My PK 1000VA will switch on immediately when I need it and it makes no noise at all.

Unfortunately, this is not true with my 1200VA Belkin.I always turn my PC off at night.I never leave it on when I go to bed or leave the house.Whenever I need to turn my PC on or off, I must press the tiny bubble switch for 3 seconds which is a real bother.Every single day, sometimes twice a day, I must press and hold the tiny bubble switch for 3 seconds. When I want to use my PC, I want to switch it on immediately.I don't want to stand there with my finger on the switch.I have a fairly convenient layout for my computer room, with the UPS's on a shelf one level above the floor. Can you imagine how other owners must crawl under their desks to turn these things on?Unlike the PK's, the Belkin's switch is not located on the top front of the unit. The bubble switch can be difficult to find in a darkened area, where both UPS's are indeed located.Sometimes I must use my flashlight to locate the switch.

Unlike both my PK's, the Belkin emits a powerful low frequency hum. This hum can be heard when the PC is off.If you have a smaller computer room where you also do your studying, watch TV or movies, you will hear this hum. When I am at my desk, the Belkin is less than 3½ feet from me.Even when I am 4½ feet away watching TV or a movie, I can clearly hear this hum.

Replacing the two batteries for the Belkin F6C120-UNV is not easy. You must take the entire unit apart to remove them.In fact, I could find no information on battery removal in the instructions or Belkin's website. Most other UPS makers will give you instructions on battery replacement.Belkin seems to purposely make it a mystery.

As I mentioned before, I have never installed UPS software.I have read online reviews regarding Belkin's "Bulldog Plus" software.I am sure it is very good. However, I simply don't need it.For completeness, I will mention the other features the Belkin has.The Belkin has 2 RJ11/RJ45 and 2 surge-only outlets, 4 battery backup/surge outlets, and both USB and serial interface ports for use with their software. The Belkin has a 3 year parts and labor warranty. The F6C120-UNV includes a $500K connected equipment warranty and a "data recovery warranty", although I am skeptical they have ever paid out $500K.Finally, as with most other UPS's, the Belkin includes automatic voltage regulation (AVR).Essentially, AVR smooths out the voltage from your house to your PC, maintaining an average of 110-120 volts while eliminating spikes above 120 volts and dropouts below 110 volts.Belkin claims the F6C120-UNV can provide "up to 100 minutes backup time."I'm sure this is true, if you merely connected a 10 watt bulb to it.A more realistic figure would be 10 to 20 minutes for a standard tower system.

If you need an inexpensive, feature-rich UPS, the Belkin F6C120-UNV will suit your needs. However, if you do a lot of studying and are particular about your environment, don't buy this UPS.Moreover, if you want an "instant on" system, this UPS is not for you.I doubt I will buy any more Belkin UPS's.My next UPS will be the APC XS 1500VA.The APC has all the features the Belkin has and more. The APC is an "instant on" UPS and the button is conveniently located at the top front. The APC battery is easy to replace, simply by sliding the bottom front down, unplugging the battery, and pulling it out.The APC is a more expensive UPS than the Belkin so you might want to wait until APC has another rebate program for it.I believe the APC also uses a more expensive battery.

Based on features and price, I give the Belkin F6C120-UNV a marginal pass. However, my next UPS will be an APC XS 1500VA.

Sincerely,
Daniel L. Martinez ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars power conditioner for home theater
I have been using this powercenter for over a year and it works well. What I like best is that I don't notice any loss of signal quality when using the Coax filter.I have noticed this with other coax filters. The color coded and labelled outlets also are handy when moving/adding equipment. This way you know exactly what you are unplugging.A couple things I didn't like about the powercenter is that it is only rated at 15amps (~1800 watts). So if you have a 20amp circuit for your hometheater you are not able to draw all the power you could. This is probably not a big deal unless you have a lot of equipment and are running it all from the powercenter.Another item to watch for it that the coax input/output connectors have a tendency to loosen up.Then when I move the powercenter my sub woofer thumps loudly.Like it is shorting out internally. This is easy fixed or avoided by tightening the coax fittings.Lastly this unit will not take care of ground loop hums that can occur from improperly grounded cable feeds. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Yet another great APC product
I own many APC UPSes, from the relatively high end (i.e., like this one) to the relatively 'normal' levels. All seem incredibly well built. Before buying a UPS understand why APC has these various offerings, and try to understand which you might need.I wouldn't want my more critical servers ideally on anything below the Smart UPS series (they tend to have a pure sine wave output, along with a much more tightly regulated output). The Backup Pro series is a minor step down from the Smart UPS, in that it sacrifices pure sine wave output. The Backup series (non-pro) still has a very nicely regulated output, but is not quite as tightly controlled as the Pro series (nor of course does it have pure sine wave output).

APC sells serious stuff, at all levels, for very real reasons. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great item
Had mine since December 1999 but noticed that the battery failed after about 3 years, like the other poster wrote, APC didn't list a replacement at first but now they do and I finally got around to replacing it.Battery type is RBC2 for those wondering.

Solid unit, having a telephone line/out and USB controller is a plus.

3-0 out of 5 stars Solid unit...with a catch
I have owned one of these UPS's for about 3 years.Earlier this year the alarms went off indicating that the battery needed replacement.I thought that was odd considering the age of the unit.No problem though,I'll just log onto APC's website and order a replacement battery.Wasn't I surprised to see that APC indicates that this model doesn't have a replacable battery. This didn't make much sense to me since the unit has an access door to the battery compartment.

Well,I removed the battery and found a web vendor that had a replacement for $18.It is a very common 12volt cell and was available from several vendors. The unit is back up and working well again.

I have experienced several black-outs in the past few years and this UPS can keep my CPU, 19" monitor, cable modem & network switch operable for enough time to save any work in progress and shut down my system.

In closing, it is a well designed unit with adequate power for most home or small office systems. But I was a little put off by the short life of the original battery and incorrect replacement information listed by APC.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great unit!
This unit is my 2ed UPS made by APC.I out grew the other and decided on this unit. The USB connection is what sold me on this as I leave my computer on most of the day.It did shut down (using the included software) during a test I ran and the software as gives you a battery charge state.A must have if you are in an area that has frequent power problems. With the built in surge protection, you can't go wrong.

Amazon.com Product Description

APC's Back-UPS LS 500 offers rugged and remarkably stylish power and surge protection for high-performance computer systems. With seven power outlets (four battery plus surge and three surge-only), two-line fax/modem protection, and easy-to-use software for file saving and auto system shutdown, the LS 500 provides complete computer-system protection.

Measuring just 5 x 9 x 8 inches (W x H x D) and weighing a mere 16 pounds, the LS 500 provides a lot of backup for its size. Dataline protection covers RJ-11 modem/fax/DSL protection (four-wire, dual lines), and the surge-energy rating extends to 420 joules, handling surges, spikes ,and even lightning (guaranteed).

An overload indicator notifies you when the UPS has too much connected equipment for its rated load, and audible alarms and status LEDs notify you of changing UPS and utility power conditions. A cold-start feature lets you power on the unit with no input power, providing temporary emergency battery power when the utility power is out.

Typical backup time at half load is 14.1 minutes (157.5 watts), and typical backup time at full load is 3.6 minutes (315 watts). Automatic voltage regulation (AVR) corrects low-voltage conditions without draining the battery, while the unit's space-saving, ergonomic shape makes the unit easy to use and manage. Its outlets are conveniently located on top, and the alarm indicators are visible from any angle. The LS 500's transformer-block spacing is designed to allow use of up to two transformer block plugs without blocking access to other outlets.

USB 2.0 compatibility and connectivity ensures quick and easy installation of the included APC Shutdown Manager PowerChute Personal Edition software (for Windows 98/Me/XP/2000 and Mac OS 9.0.4 or higher).

The three surge-only outlets offer protection for non-data sensitive equipment like scanners and printers without reducing the unit's available power or battery capacity. This helps to maximize battery power for equipment that needs it most like a computer and monitor. The unit's use of a push-button circuit breaker instead of a standard fuse eliminates the need to return the unit to the factory for service.

Microprocessor-controlled battery charging and diagnostic testing ensures maximum battery life and intelligent battery management, while a replace-battery indicator warns you when to charge or replace the battery. Using an optional replacement battery, you can even change the LS 500's battery without powering down your equipment. The unit uses a leakproof, maintenance-free, sealed lead-acid battery with suspended electrolyte.

The UPS also offers a $25,000 lifetime equipment-protection policy, free trial offers of anti-virus, e-mail privacy, system recovery and firewall software, as well as a data-recovery warranty provided exclusively by Ontrack Data Recovery Services. Optional batteries include the CURK2 APC Charge-UPS Refresher Kit number 2 and RBC2 APC Replacement Battery Cartridge number 2.

5-0 out of 5 stars A life-saver for desktop user
I bought this unit in September 2004 from J&R via Amazon, and the unit worked flawlessly ever since, and saved me a couple of time from power outage.
I haven't used any other power backup device, so I cannot compare. However, I can tell that this unit works perfectly and is worth the money.

5-0 out of 5 stars this thing rules
i was worried it may be noisy, but it's not. i have a pentium 4, 17" monitor, two hard drives, etc. and it says i'm using 158-170 watts of power. this thing can handle a lot more than that. very happy with it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excelente UPS!!
The UPS is simple, easy to install and the software is a delight, you can view and configure everything.

With the included USB cable, you can configure min and max normal voltage, view the UPS log, disable audible alarms during certain hours, and more.

Definitively, the best UPS I ever had.

5-0 out of 5 stars APC Backup Pro 500
This UPS worked right out of the box as advertized. I am running Windows XP Home so I had to download the software from the APC Web Site. Installed without a hitch. Software is very easy to use and tells you everything that you would want to know about the status of the UPS. I am running my tower, monitor and all peripherals from the UPS. This draws an average of 185 watts which gives me 12 minutes of backup. I setup the software to 'shutdown' my PC after 3 minutes of a power outage. During a test it did exactly as advertized. Great product ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for Mac OS X too!
The manufacturer only lists software compatibility with OS 9. Guess what... Mac OS X (works great with 10.3) has built in support. Just plug it in to a USB port and it's available in the system preferences pane under Energy Saver. From there, you can set auto shut down and monitor the battery charge in the unit.

This is definitely recommended for smaller computers/monitors or people needing short run time. I'm using it with a PowerBook so that I can gently spin down my attached external hard drives and still have protection for surges on the printer and speakers.

You might want to consider the BackUPS Office 650 (Model #BE650BB) instead. You get considerably more run time and 2 more outlets (8 total instead of 6 total on this unit).

1-0 out of 5 stars The APC damaged equipment warrantee is worthless.....
I don't own this specific APC product, but I do own other APC products.

My home was hit by lightning on July 2, 2004 during a severe lightning storm. Both of my garage door openers were destroyed during the strike and they were on separate NET3 power line surge protectors made by APC.

NET3 surge protectors offer the best ($50,000) damaged equipment warranty that APC offers. APC refuses to pay for replacement garage door openers since in their determination, the surge protectors are functioning properly (I had to send the surge protectors at my expense for analysis at their labs).

I will never contend that a surge protector can protect any device from a direct lightning strike, but the APC warranty contends that they will replace your equipment in the event this unfortunate event occurs.

I now do not recommend APC equipment, since their warranty is worthless.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great (llow cost) UPS
I bought 5 of these for the computers in the house. I would have got better ones but the house has an auto generator so all I need is about 30 seconds of power. I noticed in another review the person saying there unit was going of and on battery mode even when the power was still on... To my understanding this unit detects (dirty power) and when it detects it, it will then stop accepting ac power. I think the software it comes with allows you to turn the feature off or even turn the sensitivity up.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good second unit
I bought one of these 10 months ago for my daughter's eMac. It has functioned well despite many power 'blinks' and short outages due to thunderstorms and such. I have a larger APS unit on our cable modem and wireless base station-equipped main home computer. It provides the main backup and surge protection to our home computing systems. The BE350U would be a bad choice for a larger machine or a modem-using computer but for our sort of secondary computer situation it has worked well. The shutdown software kicks in when needed and we have never lost any files as a result.

2-0 out of 5 stars Beware!
If you have a cable modem for broadband connection to the internet, your unit will not be covered by the APS warranty on this device. Lightning hit near our house and the motherboard plus router got fried. The cable modem stayed intact and we filed a claim with APS. They denied it saying backend surges through the cable may have caused the damage (even though the modem wasn't hurt?). ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Quiet and reliable
This power supply is a good purchase. It is indeed quiet, not silent, but quiet compared to older power supplies.

It has some interesting features like SATA connectors for the upcoming generation of hard drives, and "dedicated Fan Only power connectors allow TruePower to control the speed of case fans, reducing total system noise." This feature is limited (in the documentation) to 3 fans though, so if you have more, you will have to connect them to regular connectors.

It does not have an extra outlet in the back, to plug your monitor in, like some other power supplies have, but it does have an external +5V and +12V connector to power external peripherals. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Drops DSL connections over time
I bought the CPS825AVR to replace a regular Belkin SurgeMaster II.After two months of use, I felt confident in my surge protection, including on the phone line. But gradually, I would lose my DSL connection once a day and then once every three hours until eventually, I couldn't sync to the Central Office at all. This loss despite the fact that the Cyberhome icon in the desktray indicated that it was properly functioning.

Not realizing the Cyberhome was the problem (because I'd never had a problem with all the other surge protectors I've used), I'd reboot the modem, reboot my Netgear router, or the failsafe: reboot my PC.It wasn't until I lost DSL connectivity altogether that my brain kicked in gear and I unplugged the phone line from the UPS and connected it directly to the modem.

Wal-la!!Connectivity restored and has since never been lost. The other gripe with this unit is that the USB cord from the UPS to the PC is only about 3.5 feet long so your PC/UPS placement is severely constrained unless you buy a USB extension cable.

I wouldn't recommend this unit despite it's price. With the problems described above, I suggest you pay a little more for a more-recognizable brand like APS or Belkin.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inexpensive, quality alternative to APC
First off, I bought the 900AVR model, but it doesn't appear to be sold at Amazon at the time of this writing, and this is the closest model I found.I bought it over two years ago, and it's still going strong, having kept my computer going through a power outage many times, and I've had no problems related to power spikes and the like. When I'm not there to gracefully close out Windows, the bundled software will automatically put it through a shutdown sequence after a configurable timeout. The software I have does have a bit of an amateur presentation, but it works fine, and it very well may have been updated in the past two years. When I bought it, it was with some trepidation, as Cyber Power was not one of the major name brands in the field, but I decided the significantly lower price was worth the gamble, and I'm glad I took it.Of the four UPS's I've owned, all different brands, I've had the best experience with this one. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars All wires neat and in place
There are lot's of power strips out there. This one is a neat and safe one that has turned the jungle of wire behind our TV into an organized and protected array. Overall a good product with a nice manufacturer's Guarantee of performance.

It always made me nervous to go in my sons room and see all the outlets full, and extention cords being used "illegally". The Monster Cable MP AV600 has not only neatly and safely consolidated this hazard, [pricey] equiptment to which it attaches.
