The Top Selling USB Serial Adapter For Macintosh! There's a good reason why we sell more Mac USB serial adapters than any other company. Our years of experience in making PCI serial cards for Macintosh make us much more knowledgeable about Macintosh serial technology. We applied this expertise to produced the first USB serial adapter for Mac OS in October 1998. As Apple released Mac OS X, we added Mac OS X drivers for the Twin Serial Adapter. This adapter is recommended by dozens of serial devices manufacturers and this adapter has been certified by Apple for use with Final Cut Pro (to connect to external video decks). ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Serial technology is still alive on the Macintosh!
I am a software developer for a Point-of-Sale program that is used by thousands of stores. We have relied on the Keyspan 28x for years to provide us with compatibility with the older RS-232 technology.Even today, 6 years after Apple stopped producing Macs with serial ports and replaced them with USB, the computer industry and the peripheral industry lagged behind. Now, there are many peripherals that support USB, but there are still many used and new RS-232 and RS-422 devices that the Keyspan opens up to us.

Serial devices can last for years. We have many many clients who are still using Keyspans.

Even today. We are programming for USB, and we believe that USB is the future, but some of our clients prefer RS-232 Serial and the required Keyspan 28x.

TheKeyspan 28x is not perfect.I found that it didn't work on my eMac that I purchased in May 2003 when booting from OS X, but it works most of the time for what we do.

After adjusting our program for OS X or using the Keyspan with older Macs in OS 9, most Macs and peripherals that we support work well with the Keyspan.

I believe enough in the Keyspans that I am selling them on Amazon.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good, but does not work in OSX with an old printer...
I mistakenly purchased this product to use with an ibook for printing in OSX AND CLASSIC with an old Apple Laserwriter 300. Bad news: because the old printer does not have software for OSX, I cannot use the adapter with OSX! This adapter works easily with my old printer in the "classic" mac OS on my ibook; however, printing is very slow. So if you want to use an old printer with both OSX and Classic OS, forget about this product.

5-0 out of 5 stars Works well with any USB equipped mac.
The description ."...for Mac Imac and Blue G3" is misleading, probably dating from when those were the latest and only USB macs available.Fact is, it works flawlessly to provide two working serial ports with any USB equpped mac.

I found that I could use my ancient serial printer from my grey G4 tower without even reading the documentation. I could print from any classic application, either running in the Classic environment, or when booting OS9. I was even able to use classic printer sharing across my LAN.The client software just sees traditional Modem and Printer ports, and works perfectly normally.

Note however, that if the serial device you intend to use with it doesn't have any OSX drivers, you'll still only be able to use it from Classic applications. (or 'Carbon' applications which you force to run under Classic)That includes most, if not all non-postscript serial printers.

1-0 out of 5 stars Bad C/S support makes adapter worthless
I have the original serial adapter.Keyspan has never updated their software so that it works with MacOS (9.0 - 9.2).Software conflicts with all peripherals, creates networking problems.I've tried contacting Keyspan to find a solution, but they don't respond to customer emails.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great and functional device
This adapter allows printers w/ regular serial connections to be hooked up via/ usb to an imac, b&w G3, g4 or cube. It comes w/ all necessary drivers but you must order the proper Serial cable if you do not have one. Onkeyspan.com their is a great list of supported printers. Other then the print deskjetdirect for networks this is the best solution for hooking up older printers or non usb printers to new apple computers. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Blue Screen of Death
This does not work under win XP.It seems to work, but frequently crashes the OS with the infamious windows "Blue Screen of Death".

This is even true with the latest drivers downloaded from the IOGear web site as of 4/2005.

IOGear tech support does not respond to error reports on this device.

RUN AWAY!

1-0 out of 5 stars Does Not Work With Windows XP
Trust the other reviewers. This does not work with Windows XP.Even though on the outside of the box it states it will work with XP on the inside it says"We have developed a walkthrough for our customers wishing to use the USB/PDA adapter with Windows XP.Although we currently make no official guarantees of functionality, many people have had success when installing the Windows 2000 driver."They can't even say it will work. Many hours of attempting to get this to work for my Palm Vx, I was about to give up UNTIL I saw on Amazon an adapter that Reviwers said worked with Windows XP.I bought it and it does!! So, save your money from IOGEAR and purchase the CABLES TO GO USB to Serial Adapter. It is so much simpler to install and it works!!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Doesn't Work
I should have believed those other reviews that says this Serial Adapter doesn't work on XP, because it doesn't. The driver included on the CD does absolutly nothing, and the adapter simply will not work. Do not buy it if you are running XP.

5-0 out of 5 stars This adapter works fine...
Got this adapter to use with a laptop that only had USB ports to communicate to some PLC's, which can be picky about communications. It works fine, and I found that, depending on which USB port I plugged the adapter into the adapter would show up as either comm4 or comm5, but if you think about it it makes sense for it to work that way, especially if you needed more than one adapter. If you want it to be comm4 all the time, for example, always plug it into the same usb port.

3-0 out of 5 stars Oh well, works in Win ME, and somewhat in XP
I regret having to amend my previous recommendation. The adapter still works fine on my laptop in Win ME, but in Win XP on my desktop it has some problems. When I plug in the adapter, sometimes XP puts it in COM4, but sometimes COM5. Either way, it will not work unless I reboot XP with the adapter connected. I think this is an XP problem, but it certainly makes using the adapter less convenient. I have found Win XP to be about as awful as previous versions of windows ... it is true that it seldom goes blue screen ... but I still have to reboot a couple of times a day, and hardware installation is still "plug and pray". To think Bill Gates is the richest guy in the country ... maybe Marx was right after all. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars No Problems here either!
Wow, I was suprised to read all the bad reviews.I bought this needing a 2.0 USB port since my laptop is 2 1/2 years old...my music tranfer rate to my IRIVER H10 is speedy. As Far as support...I haven't need it, so I 'll give this a FULL STAR Rating.

1-0 out of 5 stars i am IOGear's complete lack of customer service
causes system hangs 100% !!! of the time, when PLUGGING IN USB 2 devices like my ipod.100% !!!support says "we cannot replicate your problem"!!!

this card is worthless; this company's response has been worthless; the time and trouble this thing has cost me LONG AGO blew away the $20-40 i saved not buying name brand.

suffice to say i will never buy another IOGear product again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to install
I have an HP 1800 laptop running Windows XP Home Edition. The hardest part of the install was opening the box.Followed the directions provided and it was up and running inside of two minutes. If you need high speed USB on your laptop is the card to buy.

1-0 out of 5 stars Mostly bad results
I had an earlier IOGear 1-port card for a Dell Inspiron 2650 (XP), and I never got it to work.I just got the GPU202 2-port card for a new Dell Inspiron 300m (XP), with the same results. This time I downloaded the newest driver - still no luck. The laptop recognizes some peripherals plugged into the GPU202, but they won't function.

In any case, this is the last time I will waste any money on IOGear.

1-0 out of 5 stars Caused lock-ups with my machine
I've used many pcmcia cards before with my computer (Compaq Evo n600c, WinXP Pro), with no problems. This card was the exception.First 5 times I used it, it worked great. After that, it would cause my machine to freeze whenever I inserted it.In the end, I discovered that the only way to get it to work was to reboot the machine at least once with the card already inserted.Driver updates did nothing to fix this problem.Major inconvenience and no support resources.Go with another card if you can. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Belkin 5 port USB not good
I am running Win 2000 pro SP4, w/SOYO Dragon Plus motherboard SY-K7V on my pc and the USB drivers have been a problem.I have had to reinstall them several times and the system has a hard time finding them on the disk.Very little support at the Belkin web site as well. I have gotten the card to run and when it does its great. But when you reboot it trys and fails to reinstall the hardware. I would not recommend this for anyone seeking to add USB 2.0 ports to their pc.

1-0 out of 5 stars Worst item ever!
I recently bought this card to add on to my HP desktop computer. The card went in easy enough, but that's when the problems started. I put in the disk that came with the card, but over and over my computer wouldn't recognize the card or the program on the disk. I kept having problems occur one after another and other programs starting to fail due to this mess. After almost losing the computer on the second occasion, I was forced to take the card out of the computer. All problems ended immediately! I've had no problems with Belkin's cords and wires, but their cards and hubs, I've had nothing but trouble. Do yourselves a favor and don't get this item. It could cause you nothing but your entire computer to crash. It's not worth your hard earned money to see your computer crash and burn, is it? If you need to add a card, find yourselves a different brand. I, myself, am going to try Adaptec. Hopefully that one won't cause me the problems that I have gotten with this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Plug & Play on Win XP
Works beautifully on XP. Very easy to install. Highly recommended if you need to upgrade a pre-USB 2.0 PC!

5-0 out of 5 stars No problems with Windows ME
The card and driver were installed on a Dell Dimension 4100 running Win ME with no glitches.Be sure to follow the instructions in the proper sequence. Whether it helped or not is debatable, but before I started, I:
1) disabled any anti-virus programs
2) unplugged the USB devices from the original USB 1.0 ports
3) removed the Belkin driver CD before powering down (after downloading the driver)
Scanner downloads are now lightning fast.

1-0 out of 5 stars Simply does not work
I purchased this card, installed it on a Jetway VT266 motherboard with Windows XP installed. This ruined my installation of Windows XP, and I had to reformat my drive. I thought it was simply because I had a cheap motherboard, so I tried it in my Dell - same thing. I have always purchased Beklin products in the past, but will not go near anything Beklin now. If you buy this card, it's a lucky dip as to whether or not it will work on your system. Please - buyer beware. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Poor Support
I got an error trying to install this card. I do this for a living so I ought to be able to install a simple PCI card. But not this time. I spent the extra money on the name-brand card because I read about the Adaptec Support from other reviewers. Well first, their website was useless. The suggestions they had were'nt even close. Then I decided to talk to a live person - but wait! You need a credit card and have to pay $10 for phone support. So I e-mailed a detailed description of the problem to them. After 48 hours, no reply. I found a MS KB article that told me exactly how to fix the problem.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Product
As with all Adaptec products I have used, this one worked right out of the box with no problems. Microsoft must have fixed the problem in Windows XP Pro, because I installed this card without any problem in a system running Windows XP Pro (SP2). You can't go wrong with this card and it's worth the slightly higher price to eliminate installation and support problems!

5-0 out of 5 stars Adaptec AUA-3100LP USB 2
Everything worked right out of the box!The installation was flawless and the software worked. One tip might help, I installed this on Windows 98 SE and it helps to pop the installation disc in and print out the pages of the guide for your particular system and have them handy.Otherwise you will be at the mercy of the Windows installation wizard and it's choices.

5-0 out of 5 stars Painless installation and flawless performance!
I recently purchased a 4 megapixel camera, and I found that it took much longer to download the larger picture files it produced than the pictures from my old 2.0 MP camera, (using a CF reader with USB 1.1). I was also getting more errors, like refusing to open a preview picture, and occassionally freezing the whole system. Since I do a lot of photo editing, I decided to upgrade to USB 2.0. I installed this card in a 866mhz P3 Dell w/512mb RAM, running Windows 98SE. Installation of the card and the software was simple, and it works flawlessly. Used with a new USB 2.0 card reader, the speed is unbelievable, even when uploading images to a website and downloading and editing photos at the same time, with no glitches or errors at all. I had purchased a similar card (Belkin F5U220) from a different vendor, but it caused numerous system crashes, and when I called Belkin tech support, I found the rep to be inept and surly. I highly recommend this Adaptec product, and Amazon's service was superb, as usual.

5-0 out of 5 stars Card was easy to install, but beware of drivers
The card itself is nice and there's a lot of documentation and support available at the company, which is a switch from the generics that I normally buy. This card is replacing a generic which didn't function all too well and had no support.

The USB view software is amazing.I now can see a map of all of my legacy and 2.0 USB devices, including printers, drives, camera, MP3 players, etc.

One point on installation:I have Windows XP Pro.During Plug and Pray, it automatically installed NEC drivers, not the Adapatec drivers. This is likely Microsoft's fault.Download the latest drivers for the 3100LP card from the support website, they are dated Dec 2002.You will have to go to the Control Panel, to the device and update drivers. When it asks you, specify a location where you installed the new drivers to, and ensure you are installing drivers for this card. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars doesn't come with a cable
I expected it would come with a cable to hook up to the USB device, but it doesn't. So I am ordering a third cable....

2-0 out of 5 stars HW ok, user interface under Mac OS X is poor
In short it works, however ... the software under Mac OS X is very poor.To switch between the computers sharing the USB peripheral you need to have the software running, it uses space in your Dock and you still have to use a hot-key sequence. There is no menu option in the user interface to do the switch, and no help menu.In fact the entire user interface is quite unprofessional, the "About" menu is "About Hello" ???, which brings up a window with hello, hello, hello ..They don't even provide the manual or a README on the CD.

Something went right today.Hooked it up and it worked. They also sell 4 port to one devise model too. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't bother if you have a Mac
In spite of the item description, you cannot run this product in 2.0 mode on an Apple. I discovered this upon reading the ReadMe on the install CD. That document refers you to the Adaptec site for Max OS drivers, of which there are none.

The package has the Mac and OS X logos on it, but don't let that fool you; it isn't a 2.0 hub for the non-windows world.

So now I have a rather expensive USB 1.1 hub. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Simple, basic, does the job it was meant for
Assuming you've got an available USB port on your PC, and are running a USB-compatible version of Windows (Win98SE or higher, or Windows 2000/XP), this product does exactly what you'd expect it to.Simple to use - just plug your PS/2-style mouse and/or keyboard into the unit, then plug the unit into an available USB jack on your PC, and Windows will autodetect the devices.

This is an excellent device to use if you want to attach two PS/2 style keyboard/mouse combos to the same PC - for example, if you've got both an adult and a child-size keyboard you want to run on the same PC, and both keyboards have PS/2 jacks.

Device also works great if you want to attach a PS/2 style keyboard or mouse to a laptop which has only USB ports. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Doesn't work with flash drives.Avoid this one.
Because this card DOES NOT come with a power adapter (the Belkin Cardbus card does, and I'm ordering one after I send this one back) it would not work with my flash drives. One it would not see at all, and the other it would see but not access.
I assume it works O.K. with low or non power devices such as USB keyboards or Mice, or with devices that have their own power supply such as an External USB hard drive, but I've tested neither.I just know this one is 15 dollars more, then you need to turn around and buy the adapter, which is not even listed on Amazon?
Also, the driver installation was a pain because after Windows XP installs its drivers, you have to disable all the USB controllers on the card, download the Adaptec driver, then it will install the Adapted drivers. That took me about an hour to find on the Adaptec website.I'm a technician and I do this kind of thing all day; it should not be this hard.
    Avoid this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent product
I bought this item after a bad experience with an ADS Technologies card (see my review for that one) that did not work. At first I was hesitant to shell out the cash for the Adaptec, but I was so desperate to find a USB2.0 PCMCIA card that did NOT require an AC adapter.

I have an HP Pavilion ZT1180 notebook, running XP Home SP2. Older, but a great notebook. The biggest drawback of my notebook is the lack of USB 2.0 ports (they are all USB 1.1). I needed a card that I could use with my 802.11 SuperG usb dongle and did NOT require an AC adapter. What's the point of being wireless if you still have to plug in the card!

The card is basically Plug and Play. I popped it into my notebook and it was rarin' to go (after the usual XP prompts to detect drivers, etc). I did not need to run the included CD-ROM, nor did I need to go to the Adaptec website for updated drivers. XP Home SP2 had the drivers for it. The card was able to support and provide enough power for my wireless USB dongle like a pro and I was able to surf at 108 mbps! I am EXTREMELY pleased with this card. I have not pushed the card by trying to install another usb device that would require power. There is a jack for an AC adapter, but no adapter was included with the product. You could probably pick one up easily at a Target or Radio Shack if necessary.

I have to say that it is worth the price (hence 5 stars) because of the power issue. Similar cheaper no-name or generic brand cards aren't capable of providing enough juice to power a simple USB dongle.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Product ( required extra work)
Here what I had to do to get the adapter to work:
    - Go to the Adaptec Website, download the latest driver (Using the Model number on the adapter)
    - Go to the Adaptec trouble shoot website and follow the instruction for work around to overwrite the WinXP SP2.
    - Reboot then you will be fine.
I give it **** because of the above problem. Otherwise, it worked great with all my external devices( External Hard Drive, DVD burner ...etc)
Note: - Linux setup for this is a lot easier.
    - Toshiba laptop may have lower voltage on the PCMCIA slot
so make sure to check it out.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Plus for Plug N Play
I have a Sony 2.0 G VAIO with Windows XP.Under this environment it was just a matter of plugging it in and the drivers installed themselves automatically.I did not even have to open up the driver CD that accompanied the CardBus.Very impressive if you ask me.I am backing up my files as I am typing this with no problem onto my 160 G external hard drive using the fast USB 2.0 technology.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not great
First of all, this has to go in the top PC slot, because it is bulky.

Second, I couldnt get it to work with my notebook (running ME).The lights stayed red.

Most importantly, and the reason I didnt pursue trying to get it to work for too long, as a previous review said, the card interfered with my wireless connection. My wireless nic card below the usb adapter couldnt hold a signal, even without the usb card working.

So, I returned it, needless to say. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars It might work for you
But it didn't work for me.Every time I plugged a device in to it, my laptop crashed with a "blue screen," and I had to wait for a reboot to use the device.

1-0 out of 5 stars sure way to a crash
The device worked fine for two weeks then it made my laptop crash every time I had it inserted. Thank goodness removing the device brought me back. I spent hours trying the ideas from the Micro tech. Nothing helped. Its junk.

3-0 out of 5 stars Works Fine
I was a bit worried after reading the negative reviews of this card but it works fine, and for the price <$30 I have no complaints - it does the job.

Noted behaviour:

Running under XP - it does not require the drivers that ship with it - seems to run fine with the XP default drivers or with the shipped (non-XP certified) drivers on CD.

Running a USB2 external disk (ION) that draws power from the USB port requires that you plug in the external power adapter for the card (it ships with it) to supply sufficient power for the device. If you don't plub in the adapter there are no warnings issued - the external drive just fails to be detected and configured, although all the ION power LEDs are on (if you listen closely you realise the disks aren't spinning). This may lead you to believe that the card and/or the external device is not working.

XP sometimes complains about power surges exceeding specs on the USB hub when you plug in the AC adpater or the external drive, but the USB managemnt spec seems resilient enough to detect and handle this - in other words, no hardware smoked. The caveat is that XP says "click here" to resolve the problem and it doesn't - XP appears to shut the port or ports down so you need eject the card and re-insert.

1-0 out of 5 stars doesn't work
It simply doesn't work after I had it installed. Should've read the reviews before I decide to buy it...

1-0 out of 5 stars I wish Amazon had negative stars
I bought this hoping to upgrade to USB 2.0 and it hasn't work at all. I haven't been able to troubleshoot and thier website doesn't even support this product. It is supposed to come with a 3.5 disk that contains the driver but it wasn't included. Micro Inovations sucks. Be sure to check for support before you buy any product from them. Better yet don't buy anything from them and hopefully they will disappear. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Got to be something better
I use it to switch keyboard/video/mouse between two systems, but it's pretty flaky.Sometimes you have to hit the button several times to get it to switch, and since it takes several seconds for the switch to take effect, you have to click ... move the mouse around and wait to see if it worked ... click ... move the mouse around and wait to see if it worked ... etc.Annoying.It works okay except for that, but it's also on the expensive side. There's got to be something better out there.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for Mac and PC Sharing
I bought this KVM a few weeks ago after scouring the web for USB KVM boxes. This was one of the few out there that qualified. The reason I needed a USB switch was for my wife's computer, which is an Apple Power Mac G4.The other computer hooked up to it is a clone Pentium 3 system. So far, we have not had any problems with the unit.In general, we tend to put the Apple in sleep mode when we shut in down rather then power it off altogether. When we switch back to the Apple after using the PC for a while, the Apple automatically turns on without having to wake it up.On the PC side, I am running Windows XP, and I normally shut it down in hibernation mode.Switching from the Apple to the PC, all I have to do is hit the power button, and I'm up and running with both the mouse and keyboard completely functional.

One side note - I am using the Macintosh USB keyboard that came with the Power Mac, and the USB mouse is a Microsoft Optical. So far, both of these devices have worked great between the two computers. Also, we have an HP DeskJet printer which we share between the two computers, and I plugged the printer into one of the two USB slots that are on the front of the KVM.So far, it's worked great.

Other then it being PC and MAC friendly, this is a great system if only for the fact that it comes complete with everything you need to set it up - no need to go out and buy more cables. The only drawback I could see is that you are limited to sharing the KVM between only two computers. But if what you are looking for is a good (and inexpensive) way to share one keyboard, mouse, and monitor with two computers (whether it is aMAC or PC), then this would be a sound solution for you.

2-0 out of 5 stars Just be sure to keep your receipt
Good: comes with all the cables you need to setup a switch for two systems to share a monitor, USB keyboard and USB mouse. Reasonably priced.Small size.Supposedly has hot switch capability.
Bad: Recognized desktop, but wouldn't recognize laptop and wouldn't switch between systems.Basically my primary system would work as long as it was the first and only system I used. As soon as I hit the switch it was time to shut down and reboot both systems. I'm a well-above average user and I tried everything I could think of to make it work, read the directions from the start, booted up separately to allow initialization, checked the knowledge base website. After several frustrating hours I returned it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Compact and Functional
I have a Mac and PC that I would manually switch cables between the one monitor. After much research I found this Iogear KVM switch. It is awesome. It comes with the cables you need to connect two computers to the one monitor. It is is so simple to use and it is such a tidy little unit that it takes up no room at all on your desktop.

I am impressed enough with the ability to share a monitor between the Mac and PC (no more getting up and fiddling around with the back of the monitor) and the 4 USB ports that come with this unit are a bonus (sharing one USB keyboard and Mouse between two computers). I hooked up my Zio Smart Card Reader (USB) to the Iogear unit and instantly I was switching between the two platforms and they both were recognising the card.

If you are looking at KVM switches this unit is worth your consideration. (There is also a larger model that allows 4 computers to share one monitor and keyboard). I like the fact that this unit looks after both the Mac and PC people out there. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Do NOT Buy
I bought this to use with my GPS receiver. I never got that far. After following the (poor) directions and running software, it promptly shut my machine OFF. Not just an error message or locking Windows up, it shut the whole dang thing off. After rebooting, Windows indicated it had encountered a SERIOUS error and directed to a supposed fix from the manufacturer. I tried that and got the same result. Kachunk...off. To make matters worse, it had fried my sound card and I had to buy a new one. Boy, was I steamed.

4-0 out of 5 stars Works great in Linux!
I love this unit and now have 2.It is the only USB-serial adapter I've found that works with no fuss under Linux. The only complaint I have is the bulkiness and the short cable supplied with it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pain to Install, but Good Overall
I don't know about the other OP systems, but if you are running Windows XP it is a pain to install!!!It took me 2 days before I got it running properly, and don't even think about calling tech support unless you enjoy being on hold for a half hour. When I finally got the software installed it worked out beautifully, I have not had any problems whatsoever with the adapter itself. So a few minor headached in the beginning with software installation but the over all performance of the adapter itself is excellent.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money.
I bought the -MAC version of this adapter one day at CompUSA because I needed to connect my Newton to my iMac. The first thing that I found out about it is the drivers are *very* buggy. The adapter also had to be plugged in when I booted up the iMac or the drivers wouldn't see the adapter. Same if I unplugged and replugged the adapter while the machine was running. So much for USB hot-pluggability!

Also, Belkin couldn't even be bothered to release Mac OS X drivers for this adapter. Though, considering the state of the OS 9 drivers, I don't exactly know if I'd want them.

All in all, you'd be better off with one of the USB-Serial adapters from Keyspan. (USB-PDA or High Speed) I'm going to pick one up as soon as my budget allows.

1-0 out of 5 stars Extension Conflicts Abound
I bought the Belkin Express hub because it looked neat & the lights indicating functional USB devices were important. However, over a year after buying it Belkin still has not made available software that will work with OS 9.Belkin's extensions for the Mac conflict with most other USB device extensions, including Apple's.In order to get this thing to work, I have to unplug it, start the computer, then plug it in after start up, use the device I want, then unplug it after I'm finished with the device. Otherwise, all my settings get mysteriously changed (Remote Access, printer selection, modem selection). If you want to use it for a Palm device or an older printer, use Keyspan's adapters instead. I have one & have had much fewer problems with it than this thing,The installer also installs a mysterious "printer patch" file on your hard disk, but gives you no indication where this file should be or what it does. The lights were helpful to a certain extentin that they blink to let you know thata signal has been sent to the device, however there are 4 green lights & 1 red light on each unit, regardless of how many items you can plug into it &there is no documentation that explains what different light combinations or blinking means, so you have to guess. This item is also more expensive than most of the other hubs/adapters out there & in this case you don't get what you pay for. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars User interface issues are a drawback
I bought the F1U400 as a KVM switch substitute, allowing me to use a USB mouse and USB keyboard between two computers (I can't use a KVM for my monitor, due to RF interference).

The switch *blinks*.When a USB component is plugged into it, the box indicates this by blinking an LED for that component. The blinking is very distracting, and the design of the LEDs (lots of curves) would make it difficult to cover them up.I've ended up hiding the switch behind my monitor.

The box has four buttons to swap USB components among hosts.Pressing a button once lights up the current host. You then need to press it again to start cycling through the list. The box waits for input for five seconds; only after those five seconds are complete does it reconnect the component.Any other button presses in that time cancel the change. This means that switching from one machine to another is far more laborious than with a normal KVM (particularly if you're switching a keyboard and a mouse separately).

Because I'm operating in a mixed Windows/Unix environment, I haven't installed the Windows switching software.

The F1U400 is probably a reasonable approach for components like printers, mass storage devices and scanners, which won't be moving from machine to machine with nearly the frequency of keyboards and mice. You'll have to hide the LEDs, though. ... Read more
