2-0 out of 5 stars Good idea badly executed.
You would think this would be a good thing.Hook up a box to go between your computer and monitor/speakers, and it wirelessly sends the signal to a receiver hooked up to your computer. But it's not that simple. The glowing reviews you see here were either written by employees of Grandtec, or by people with better luck than me.

First of all, there is a nice passthrough cable for your monitor. One end hooks up to the transmitter, and the other end hooks up to your video card, but you can also hook up your monitor to it, hence the term passthrough. However, having this installed makes your screen blurry, even when the transmitter is off.Second, there is no passthrough for your speakers. You have to reroute your sound to the unit; you cannot hook speakers up.I have an amp hooked up to my soundcard, so I merely hooked the GWB-4000 up through the headphone jack of my amp, so I got the passthrough anyway.

So I got it hooked up on both ends. The first problem I ran into was I got no video. The booklet says it supports 1280x1024.This is a lie.So I went down to 1024x768.I only saw the upper/left 75% of the screen, and that's in zoom-out mode.I had to go down to 800x600 to get it to display right.I can't work in 800x600 with everything blurry! And it worked, but only just barely. There were squiggly vertical lines dancing around the screen, as if the transmission wasn't clear. The transmitter and receiver were 50 feet away, around a corner. The unit operates on 2.4GHz.So does my cordless phone, and the range is much greater than that.I have no doubt the signal was fine.I blame the unit for the errors, possibly for the same reason my screen was blurry.

Testing it, I first started the first Deus Ex game. The intro movie has forced subtitles, which did not display, telling me that I was only looking at the top.It sort of stretched it, and pushed the bottom down. When the game started, the tool belt (bottom of the screen) was gone.I loaded a Divx movie with Ac3 audio, and the sound was terribly quiet. The video resolution was fine, but the aforementioned squiggly lines made the movie unwatchable.

I do not mean to accuse the other reviewers of dishonesty, but this device is no good.I can only guess at why theirs worked.Perhaps a Mac does video differently, or maybe they used a PC with an ATI graphics card.I have a PC with an nVidia graphics card. But I don't think what the computer is running is at issue, I believe the GWB-4000 unit itself is faulty.

As always, Amazon is a brilliant place to shop, they had it here very quickly although I selected the free shipping, and the return process has so far been painless.UPS is picking it up tomorrow or the next day. This has not affected my solid faith in Amazon, only in this product.Potential buyers should note that Best Buy and CompUSA will not stock this item.I originally saw this item on CompUSA's web site.I should have been warned when I learned they would not stock it in their retail stores, only the web site.I am, however, glad I purchased it from Amazon.com and not CompUSA.com.

Bottom line: Avoid it like the plague.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Product... minor quips
In case anyone is looking for an updated review, well, here you go. Purchased this in August 2004 and received it really quick. Installation was a little awkward but that is just because the photos in the user manual are in black and white and you are looking at half a dozen colored cables.

As mentioned in the manual, the colors, screen size, resolution etc are all set VERY high by manufacturing default so make sure you can view the TV from the transmitter when you first set it up so that you can adjust everything. Once I spent 5 minutes doing that, the picture was perfect. As mentioned in one of the other reviews, the sound is not transmitted unless your TV has the appropriate hookups. So make sure you have everything on the desired viewer or you could be out of luck. So far for videos though, it's worked exactly as I had hoped.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Idea, and Hardware, bad cables...
I bought this piece of hardware because it was the only wireless solution that I could find.Basically I purchased it so that I could watch AVI files that I downloaded to my computer without having to convert them to a VCD.For this application the device went off without a hitch. The video quality is phenomenal on the TV end as is the audio. The range of the device is also phenomenal and much better than I expected. However, be sure to lower the resoultion on your monitor display to 800X600 so that you can view the entire screen (the instruction manual says 1024x768 but I found this to be untrue).

With any piece of hardware there is always something you wish they had done better, and for this product it is the way it connects up to your system. The product comes with a pass through connector to attach to a standard SVGA port. While the cable works and the video that displays on the tv is perfect, it blurs and distorts the monitor end a little. If you expect your display to be perfect on your monitor you'll have to look for an alternate options of connecting up the device.Lucky for me my video card has a DVI and a VIVO port so I had no problems connecting the receiver to the RCA jack. Also be warned that if you wish to connect a RGB jack, SVIDEO jack, etc. to the reciver it will not be able to transmit this signal wirelessely so you'll have to connect them the old fashioned way.

Except for the issues stated above this is a great product and I highly reccomend it, I just wish they included a bit better cable.

4-0 out of 5 stars Easy to Use
This product has the ability to transmit computer generated images wirelessly to a TV. For showing videos or slides to you freinds and family when they come over it works great. Did you ever notice how difficult it is for the whole family to stand around your computer monitor to see the pictures of your last vacation? This is the answer. Anything that displays on your computer monitor shows up on the television and your monitor simultaneously (the cords are included). Everything worked perfectly right out of the box. You have the option to add additional receivers. Naturally, the resolution is degraded for the television because it does not function with the high resolution generated from a computer, but when using for videos or digital images, there is not much of a loss. The system video is composite only and the audio is stereo and it uses the 2.4GHz Frequency, so it typically does not interfere with cordless phones running at 900MHz. All in all an excellent choice for the person who has videos or digital images and wants the option to watch them from a remote TV. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Interferencia en el monitor

1-0 out of 5 stars Do not waste your money
I bought this so that I could use my brand new Sony Wega as a large monitor.

Pictures and Video look fine. Text is unbearably hard to decipher.

I went to AverMedia web site and found this FAQ when troubleshooting the image issue....

Even they tell you that it is not going to be perfect.

So unless you are going to use your PC as a DVD or Picture player don't waste your time and money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow!!!
After messing around with two video cards from another Mfg (that I could not get to work, my Quick play arrived today and it is a Great little product. It's quality is better than expected and in combination with Avermedia's PCI 350 TV tuner, I have my own PVR at a fraction of PVR/TiVo prices.

One word of caution, make sure your Display settings do not exceed the max. I made this mistake and took me a while to figure out why it was not working-Pilot error.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for all needs
This is simply the best priced adapter of it's kind. I purchased the AVerMedia QuickPlay origionally for my notebook computer so I could play movies from my computer onto my television. It's uses are limitless as anything on your computer screen can appear on your television, such as movies, computer games, photos, presentations, and you can even use your TV as an extended monitor to do play these things on while having full use of your regular desktop at the same time!

The adapter comes with component (Pr,Pb,Y) and S-Video hookups for your television (the Y of the component can be used for standard RCA Video-In on composit TV's.) There is a VGA passthrough cable to hook up your computer monitor as well. The whole adapter is powered through a usb cable (used for power only, you do not need to install any software,) which is perfect for mobile computing users. There's 3 levels of anti-flicker protection and three levels of adjustable contrast, as well as a button for shrinking or filling the frame of your TV and ones for positioning it. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not exceptional for Video or Games
This is an ok video converter, but if you're looking to play video on your TV and have it look the same as it would on your computer, you'd probably be better off getting a nice video card with a TV-OUT port.(or just moving your monitor into the living room) The recommended use on the Startech website is presentations, which it would excel in if you have a large television. The problem with playing video on your PC to your TV it is that the picture 'folds' over itself every once in a while, like a flipbook with a couple pages missing every once in a while. The length of the cords that they include also remind me that I bought this thing for all the wrong reasons. Your television must only be six feet away from your computer(which is not true in the average home). The remote included is tiny(about the size of a letter opener) and the buttons are not easy to press. And believe me, you'll need the remote: every time you plug it in you need to adjust the V and H positions and stretches. Also it is a weak infrared remote, meaning you must practically be 5 feet away for it to give a signal. And forget about putting sound through, it's only for video. Also, when you hook your monitor up through the monitor port on this thing, it gives out a very degraded signal that makes your monitor look like it has a thin layer of fog and bars in front of it. But for the price its ok: it gives out crisp, full color conversions on your television and the fact that you need no software is a huge plus. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars God help you if it doesn't work
1. Tech support is only available by calling an individual at GrandTec, during business hours, long distance and they expect that you'll be sitting in front of the HDTV during the call. If you happen to do something else during business hours, like . . . work, you're out of luck and open to outright hostility for being a "stupid customer".
2. Before I had a chance to even explain what was happening, I was interrupted and accused of not "working with" the person on the other end of the phone. He then warned sternly that trying to troubleshoot it on my own was likely to result in the device destroying my TV.
3. When the device doesn't work (which mine didn't), all you get is 2 big red bars on the screen. None of the menus will work until you already have everything set correctly.
4. When I said that if I needed to stay at home to fix this device, I'd lose more money in lost wages than just scrapping it and getting something else, I was informed that since they are the only ones on the market with such a device, I wouldn't find a replacement.

This arrogant manufacturer had better change their tune given that they're providing what is essentially technology that fills a short-term gap as HDTV expands into the market or they'll end up left in the dust. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Picture OK But Doesn't Fill Screen
The picture quality on this is fine, if that's all you care about. It does flicker a lot on startup and such but that seems to be pretty standard for these kinds of things.

The biggest negative is that the picture does not fill the TV screen (i.e. not enough overscanning). It does have vertical size adjustments but they don't fix this problem.I just called the manufacturer and they said that it is a known problem.Buy the TView Silver if you want to avoid this. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Ultimate XP Pro
I wouldn't recommend anybody to buy this item. I tried this item on all my TV and is very poor quality picture. Is very difficult to read any text on the screen. You have to use the zoom option when ever you want to read the text. Even my Son don't like it, when I attached his computer to his TV. It takes awhile to adjust all the options to really get it right and believe me you won't get it the way you wanted. I'm a technician and I deal with video and sound and this item does not perform as advertise. ... Read more

No where does it state that this is a black and white tv converter. Also this item seems to become extremely hot.The screen size was also uncompatable with my tv.

5-0 out of 5 stars a nice little thing to have...
I have been searching for something like this over the Internet for months. With this little thing, finally I can connect my notebook (without S-Video output) to my Sony TV (without S-Video input). The resolution for DVD playing is perfect, and I don't have the multi-regional problem any more as with regular DVD player. But might not be so good for demos, because the text, especially the small font ones, are blurred on the TV screen.
After a couple of months, I realized one more thing: it only supports NTSC and Pal, but not the rest (SECAM etc). So if you are going to France/East Europe (including Russia)/Japan, you might have some problem. ... Read more
