4-0 out of 5 stars Reliable - versatile - great value
I've had this Sharp UX300 for a few years, and it's always worked perfectly. Before I got a multi-tasking computer printer, it was my home copy machine too! If you read the directions and take care of the machine, you shouldn't have any problems. It's a great FAX machine for it's price range.

5-0 out of 5 stars Never have any problem!!
Sharp ux300 has been working very well for me.I never have any problem with it.No paper jam... nothing... Easy to work with.

1-0 out of 5 stars useless for incoming fax or copying
Paper will not feed into machine, or if it does it will jam.
Machine worked perfectly for about a week and since has been
useless except as an extra telephone. Poor quality.

1-0 out of 5 stars Unrealiable
When I first bought the fax machine I received alot of junk faxes. I haven't had a real problem sending a fax, but I have had problems receiving faxes. It appears to function but will give me an out of paper or paper jammed error. On the last one I checked the spool inside and it printed but the paper would not go through. I took out the paper and reinserted it, open up the machine to see if their was actually some paper that jammed and check to see if the spool was turning i gave up.

1-0 out of 5 stars Piece of junk
Machine was dirty....no set up book included which made the machine worthless until a book was obtained, a paper tray was missing and paper did not always go through to recieve an incoming FAX, unable to read some of the page because of an overprint. For the price it should have been near/new condition...it was junk. I would not resell this item anywhere. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Repair Costs!!!
A little over one year ago I purchased a Workcentre 390 and was pleased with the performance until, for no apparent reason, a "Fuser Error" appeared.I contacted Xerox and the cost to repair this is in excess of [money]. The copier was used only occasionally, not even one toner cartridge replaced.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Purchase
Ihave been researching MFP's for about 3 months now.I work out of my house and needed to upgrade my fax and printer. I settled on a laser due to the high cost of inkjet inks.I was leaning towards the 390 with its USB support...the purchase was made,... read the install directions and set it up. Installation was a breeze.I think the interface is very intuitive. The machine prints great text pages. I clocked 12 pages / min after inital start-up.I really like the ability to be able to make copies. At 300 dpi they are not as crisp as the printer but very pleasing. Also after using an injet printer, the lack of printer head noise from the 390 is greatly appreciated. The sheet feed scanner works great for documents.I use an Epson 610 Perfection scanner when I scan photo's. Lastly the fax is a pleasure to use. A great purchase. Very happy with my decision.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ordering another one today...
Received the WorkCenter 390 yesterday -- it was set up and ready to use in very little time. Our company has grown a lot and we needed a seperate fax line. We were planning to purchase yet another (non-networked) laser printer for a separate workstation, but decided that this little machine is really wonderful and would definitely be more useful in the lower level offices than a standard printer would be. So Far, so good!!We haven't used it enough yet to find anything we would change, although the receiving paper trays may not be very sturdy. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Run away from the XK35c
Have had the XK35c for about two years and using it only occasionally. Printer cartridges are expensive and very hard to find. Printer part of this multifunction device works fine. After one year of very little use of the copying and scanning features, the corresponding module started failing. Ridiculous. I called XEROX and they referred to a third-party company that provides service support. This company immediately tried to replace my printer for a refurbished one...

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't Go There
I've had this THING for about 6 months.I have yet to get it to scan anything without crashing.Sometimes it prints, sometimes it doesn't.Mostly it crashes. When it does print, the quality is lousy. The printer drivers stink.I've got Windows 2000 and I keep getting errors.Because of these drivers and their quirks, I have lost all my printer set ups (and I generally have 4 or 5 printers set up at time) at least 3 times which has required my office's IT staff to rebuild them.I am not some casual computer user either. While I am not the biggest geek on the block, I'm a pretty sophisticated computer user who can get himself out of most trouble. This thing has completely defied all my efforts.Don't bother even considering it.Its not worth the trouble.

1-0 out of 5 stars if you like . . ., poor . . .buy it.
This is by far the worst investment of my life.I've spent weeks trying to get it to work.USB doesn't work for windows 2000.You can't use the scanning software it gives you. The customer support is horrible.Never ever buy this product.I warned you!!

2-0 out of 5 stars Not the greatest value
Though I have seen some positive reviews on this machine, I have a hard time believing that these people are actually using the same Xerox WorkCentre model I am .I purchased the all in one for use at my office which is made up essentially of me and 2 other employees.According to the packaging, it was supposed to print close to laser quality text.NOT EVEN BLOODY CLOSE!My black text constantly has small scratches in it or is wobbly. Now you might be thinking, just realign it or clean or change the ink cartridges.I did ALL of this on numerous occassions to no avail. The best however came when I called Xerox customer service. After waiting an eternity to get a breathing person, I explained my problem, did what the technician told me to do, and no luck.I was expecting him to tell me then to send it to them for repair or replacement (still under warrenty).Once again, I was wrong. The technician told me that if I sent it out all they would do would be to realign the cartridges (something I had already done at least 3 dozen times) and clean the print heads (again, I had already done it).Essentially he said I should grin and bear it.

Now, I had no thought that this would print with quality equal to a laser printer, but I didn't think it would produce text of less quality than my old hp 600 series printer.

The scanner has been another source of joy.It does a relatively fine job when it chooses to work. The Pagis software is great when the scanner decides to cooperate.Again, Xerox customer service essentially told me there was nothing they could do about the scanner issues. When it does work however, the scans are quite good and the ocr software included was good when I got the machine back in 1999.

Another joy that comes with this machine is trying to find the print cartridges, it is not as easy as you maythink and the price, a wee bit high.

The machine did all it could for me until this January when I replaced it with an hp printer.I had in spring 2000 purchased an hp multifunction which had already replaced my xerox for scanning and copying.

On the plus side, the xerox has been generally dependable, though it is certainly tempermental. And, before anyone blames my computer, I have used the xerox with three different machines with the same problems in all cases.

I would however, never buy another product from xerox.I had expected more from the "document company."I have a certain sentimental affection for my workcentre so it will stay in the office, had Xerox customer service been in any way helpful, or at least explained to me why I was having the problems I was, or offered to replace the machine (which was still under warrenty), I am sure my opinion of the product would be a bit higher

4-0 out of 5 stars Great printer, but newer Lexmarks may be better...
Before reading this, I would check reviews on the new Lexmark all-in-one devices, since they have higher scanning and printing resolutions for the same money.
==================================
I bought this unit about a year ago (...). :-) The scanner on the first unit I picked up was actually broken, so I went back a week later and got a replacement. I'm sure this isn't a common experience...

I have been pleased overall with everything about this printer/copier/scanner. The print speed is reasonable in normal mode, but a little slow in high quality mode. If print speed is important to you, find another product. Personally, speed is not an issue - reliability and quality are all that matter.

My only COMPLAINT is the ink cartridges. I guess I didn't print very much when I first got this unit, so the cartridges got clogged up and didn't print well. I probably wasted half the ink running cleaning cycles! PRINT AT LEAST A FEW TIMES A WEEK, you'll end up saving money (and frustration) in the long run!

When the cartridges finally ran out, I saw the price of new cartridges and almost fainted (...)!!! I could have bought 2 brand new inkjet printers for the same price, so I decided to try refilling my current cartridges, hoping they would clean themselves out after even more cleaning cycles.

I bought a black/color refill kit from Jet-Master (...) that should last me as long as I own this printer. Then I experienced more cartridges headaches for a few months, and finally considered selling my printer, but miraculously, my printer started printing better than ever.

I am very glad I didn't sell this unit, because I realized that I can print near photo-quality color pictures when using high-gloss photo inkjet paper. I also realized that a lot can be done to fix inkjet cartridge problems (i.e. cleaning sponges with alcohol, cleaning ink tank with hot water, etc.)

If you don't run into cartridge problems (and will never buy new cartridges, i.e. you will refill), you will love this machine. It's very easy to use, produces good quality black and color output, and takes up less space than an individual printer and scanner. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Versatile machine for any office
I have had this machine for two years. I purchased it as a back-up for my laser printer. I also use it to print color photos, as a fax machine, and a copier. There is software that somehow allows you to use it as a scanner to. I never looked into it because I already had a stand-alone page scanner. My only criticisms of this machine is that it is slow in comparison to my laser printer, and that ink-jet cartridges, link laser toner, are expensive. However, I don't think you will be dissapointed with this machine. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great but Beware!
This machine is everything I want in a single machine and easily fits in my home office.Great quality! However, this machine will not scan if you have an AMD processor found in high-end Compaqs such as mine.So beware of that since the company does not mention that in any literature.

1-0 out of 5 stars Worst printer I've ever used (software is horrible too!)
This is an abomination! I had to return my first WorkCentre because the copier didn't work. They sent me another one and every now and then it goes into a loud "HUMMMMM" mode in which it won't print or shut up (it needs to be turned off for a few minutes to cool down). 'E1' errors abound all the time, forcing you to reload paper on average of every 5 print/copy jobs even though there is no paper jam.

On top of all this, the software driver acts also as a printer monitor which takes up significant system resources. The worst thing about this is when you print, or if the printer is shared and somebody else prints, there is a huge lag depending on the size of the print job, rendering the OS unusable until the printjob is completely sent to the printer. So basically, you can't use your computer for a minute or so after you hit the print button.

In short this is a very bad choice. Others I know purchased the HP printer/scanner/copier/fax and have had much better experiences.

1-0 out of 5 stars Like Functions, but . . .
I bought the XE90fx when it first came on the market (through Amazon because it was not available in retail stores yet).It was the only machine that did everything I wanted for a reasonable price.I am now on my fourth machine. No, I have not bought more machines, rather Xerox has replaced the first three. On the first machine, the clip on the paper tray broke (it is rather flimsy).Xerox replaced that machine with a refurbished machine which did not feed straight. The third machine (also a refurbished machine) did not feed at all - right out of the box.Since we'd had so many problems they sent us another new machine. This one has developed spotting in the printing.None of them have been able to print on my letterhead (the ink smudges).I love the variety of functions, and wish it actually performed.Unfortunately, it is not nearly sturdy enough.Xerox has been good about replacing the machines, but after awhile enough is enough.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed at nearly every turn
I am disappointed with this product in several respects. The lack of a paper tray and the fact that the printer lays out the printed pages face up causes the documents printed to come out of the printer in a stack that isarranged in reverse order. That can be corrected by instructing thecomputer to print in reverse order, but it is then a nuisance to useletterhead or cover pages, as they cannot be inserted on the top of thepaper stock. To print an envelope, one has to remove all of the paperstock. The instructions that come with the printer also recommend that onlyone envelope be printed at a time, which requires standing over thecomputer. The printer often causes a "product communicationerror" message which requires that the print job be aborted andrestarted. The time between pushing "print" and the first pagebeing printed is unbearably long at times. The toner is used up morequickly than any other printer I've ever used, and the ink doesn't adhereto the page well enough to use on envelopes without covering the addresswith tape. The printed manual is remarkably poor and often useless. I wouldnot buy this product again and do not recommend it.A stand alone copier, fax, and scanner would have been a far better way to go.The aggravationthat has gone into this printer far outweighs the additional cost of threeseparate machines.

4-0 out of 5 stars Inexpensive multifunction printer
Other reviews contain much to say about the many good features of this machine.Overall I'm very pleased with the product. But note the following: There is no enclosed paper tray. The paper stacks on theexposed slide on the back of the printer like a Canon inkjet printer.Theangle of paper feed has caused some toner ruboff on the next sheet on twosided copies, leaving a smear on the top of the next page.Colored papercauses more toner ruboff. The working footprint is much larger than thepictures show because the paper path is 90 degrees to the scanning/copingglass.Paper comes out the front of the machine on an extended"catcher."Though the copier reduces/enlarges, the glass is only8-1/2" wide so you cannot place two sheets at 90 degrees and reduce toone sheet. With an answering machine attached, the answering machinemessage completely plays before detecting a fax tone (good chance oftime-out by sending machine). With a computer modem hooked to the samephone line, the fax seems to interfere with internet communications (MUCHslower connections). The quality of copies is very good.Toner saversetting available.Easy to use controls."Scan once, printmany" feature is very nice, especially for auto document feed copies. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Poor Quality and Terrible Product Support
My HP 1220 fax has been nothing but trouble. It had a variety of irritating problems from the beginning, like not being able to fax to certain other brands of fax machine.More recently, it's copy quality deteriorated completely; and it began to display a permanent error message: "Press enter to align cartridge." When you press "enter," you get the message "Alignment failed ... press enter to align cartridge."When I called HP product support, they charged me $30 to connect me to someone in India who spoke imperfect English and had no idea what the problem was. She finally suggested that I try a new ink cartridge, even though theold one was not empty. When replacing the cartridge did not fix the problem, I called HP back, only to be told that I must pay HP another $30 to be able to tell its tech department that their advice didn't work. The result was that I learned to live with the error message and had to stop using the machine as a copier.

Now, a month later, the machine has begun jamming every time a fax arrives.I am not going to bother fixing this worthless machine again - it's not worth the effort.I advise anyone looking for office equipment quality with decent product support NOT to buy from HP.They clearly care about neither.

4-0 out of 5 stars Solid, high performing Fax
After 10+ years of solid service my Omnifax L41 finally bit the dust (the fax feed pinch wheel became too worn to work reliably and I could not find a replacement). After hunting around the web for reviews, the HP range of Faxes universally came out highly rated. So far the 1220 has been great. Easy to set up, easy to program and easy to run. What more could I ask for? Well, a deeper plain paper tray would be nice (the OmniFax could hold approx. half a ream!!). Other than that, the 1220 is highly reccomended. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't buy a fax machine that uses film cartridges
I bought this early this year but took it back after a couple of weeks. The print quality wasn't what I was used to on my previous fax machine. I couldn't be sure of the smaller type on the documents received (maybe anything 10-point or less).Furthermore, the film cartridges were hard to install--it was really a learning curve. If you are copying something small like a business card, the machine can't tell that it doesn't need to use a whole sheet of film, and it advances the film cartridge a whole sheet. So you waste that much film.I would never want another machine that uses film.If the film isn't in exactly right, it wrinkles and you see that in the printout.I'm surprised they still use this technology.

4-0 out of 5 stars Lots of features for the price
Feature packed stand-alone fax copier. No computer connection therefore no software compatibility hassles. This handsome looking machine is not a substitute for a heavy duty copier but permits flat bed copying of irregular or bulky objects (something that you can't do with feed-through fax/copiers) while still handling multiple pages via the document feeder.

The quality of the copies is not quite perfect (there are small breaks barely detectable in straight lines) but more than acceptable for light duty copying and faxing. The included film roll is only good for 30 copies, there's a large warning on the outside of the box to buy the full sized (400 copies) film roll right away. The fax function works as advertized but is a bit slow. There is a crackling sound (like bacon frying) when a document is printed that takes some getting used to.

There are many other machines that have more features and that give better quality printout but for an inexpensive fax/copier for light duty home office use this one has all you need. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

Brother contributes another smart machine--at a smart price--to the multifunction market with this five-in-one combination of full-color fax machine, printer, copier, and scanner, with computer-based fax capability.

As a printer, the MFC-5100c can produce 10 ppm (pages per minute) of black and white and 8 ppm of color, at up to 2,400 x 1,200 dpi resolution (naturally, the higher resolutions are a little slower printing). A fax broadcasting option is also provided, letting you fax up to 90 locations at a time. In addition, the MFC-5100c is equipped with a PC fax driver, enabling you to send faxes directly from your PC.

The MFC-5100c's scanner function scans at up to 9,600 dpi (interpolated; optical specification not available). When it comes to making copies, the MFC-5100c can print up to 99 copies at a time at 1,200 x 1,200 dpi resolution, and comes with a 100-sheet letter cassette. Copies can be reduced and enlarged from 25 to 400 percent. With both parallel and USB interfaces, the MFC-5100c is cross-platform compatible, working with Microsoft Windows and Macintosh iMac, iBook, G3, and G4 (cables not included). It comes with a one-year limited warranty. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Do Not Buy A BROTHER copier/fax
It is the Error 41 that one of the previous reviewers mentions that makes this a terrible product. I bought two of these - one for two separate locations. One came up with ERROR 41 within about 3 months - Brother replaced it at no charge. Within a year the other one came up with ERROR 41 - it was past warranty - and now the one they replaced has ERROR 41. The price is not worth it. I have no trust in Brother.

2-0 out of 5 stars The infamous Error 41-- Get free service from Brother
I am not happy with MFC5100C. I do think Brother should recall this product especially because of its infamous error 41.I had mine replaced by Brother having had error 41 within warranty period. It happened again and it's beyond warranty.I called Brother and surprisingly I can send it for repair "at no cost".Well, I gave them feedback how the error 41 has created distrust amongst users based on my Internet research.Having the same problem and it is beyond warranty? Call 1800 276 7746 (you may get other numbers from brother.com).Get your Serial Number ready.Good Luck.

2-0 out of 5 stars Another VICTIM
I too was excited about an afordable machine that could do what I wanted.
The first surprise was that the drivers that came with the unit weren't for WindowsXP. I learned that after I tried installing them and then was told to reformat my hard drive to remove them and download the correct drivers from the website.
Then the machine worked well for about 2 years.
I sure wish I'd have read all the reviews before I purchased a bunch of ink last month.
I was having some difficulty with paper jambs that started a few months ago and then the magenta ink stopped printing.
I noticed those problems mentioned a several times before in reviews.Like I said... another victim.
I will take everyone's advice... time to look for a different brand and don't waste my time trying to get it fixed.

1-0 out of 5 stars Please don't buy this!
mine broke in 1 yr just when it was out of warranty..poor design and quality! print quality bad!sacnner is the only saving grace!

1-0 out of 5 stars Bad product. Runs into all kinds of problems
I have two of these machines and both are broken within a year of use. On onc colors don't print and on the other I get "machine error 41". Called Brother and they looked up the serial number to say that it was out of warranty. What crap. They look at the date of manufacture as the starting of warranty. Does this mean the machine is manufactured in an instant when someone walks into a store? Avoid Brother at all costs. Customer service is poor. They find escuses to not give you service and much needed warranty support. Both of my machines are sitting in junkyard within a year of use. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

A fax machine should be easy to operate, produce plainly legible documents, and perhaps most of all, be absolutely reliable. The HP 1230 meets all of these requirements and throws in a few convenient additions. Its 33.6 Kbps modem sends and receives faxes at rates of approximately 3 seconds per page. Each black page prints at 300 x 300 dpi; color documents receive 600 x 600 dpi. You can even make convenient copies as you need them--up to 99 from a single original.

With 70 pages of memory, you don't have to fret if you're running low on paper or ink at the end of the work week--anything extra will be caught and held until the consumable is replaced. And if you're in a hurry to leave the office, set it up to send pages unattended; the 20-page document feeder is designed to work without constant hovering on your part.

The 100-number speed dial provides a conveniently accessible phone book, while the 150-sheet paper tray prevents constant refills. HP includes a one-year warranty covering parts and service.

139. Brother 580MC Plain Paper Fax
by Brother
list price: $119.99
(price subject to change: see help)
Asin: B0000516SA
Catlog: CE
Manufacturer: Brother
Sales Rank: 83909

Amazon.com Product Description

Brother's 580MC plain-paper fax provides all the benefits of a fax unit with the added advantages of copying, high-speed 14.4 Kbps modem, and a speakerphone. Capable of storing both fax and voice messages, its space-saving, compact design includes a 25-page memory, 10-page document feed, 50-sheet paper cassette, and a copy function for up to 99 copies. When an internal fax is not enough, the 580MC fills the gaps in service, combining all the features you want in a freestanding home fax machine.

The 580MC fax sets up easily, with the aid of the Brother StartCard and quick reference. However, we recommend perusal of the owner's manual to save time, to minimize frustration (we found the programming less than intuitive), and to get the benefits of extensive features, particularly if you use an external answering machine or have telephone numbers that roll over. You can program up to 54 auto-dial numbers, stored alphabetically. Indexing is a great convenience, as are the automatic redial, delayed transmission, and hold buttons. There is even a handy internal tape for when you want to record a conversation or a telephone interview, making very respectable recordings. Copying takes the click of one button, including enlargements and reductions from 50 to 150 percent. This is a convenient, if expensive, way to get copies.

Using the tapered handset and the automatic fax-phone switch lets you make calls and receive faxes through the same line. The automatic document feeder can accommodate 10 pages at a time. The easy-to-replace print cartridge potentially prints up to 150 pages--note, however, that the included cartridge has only a 30-page capacity. The 512 KB of memory can store up to 25 pages of faxes if you run out of paper, and the 16-digit LCD screen shows clear, bright numbers and messages. You can use the optional long-distance service, CallManage, for a low rate.

Overall, the unintuitive programming and the fact that you can specify 99 copies on a unit that holds only 50 sheets did give us pause. But we applaud the 580MC's remote access to faxes and messages, its ability to record conversations, and its copier capabilities, including enlargement and reduction. ... Read more
