4-0 out of 5 stars Does the job, but some things to be aware of.
Operation = Fax send (from memory,Black only).
Paper = 8 pages of various 8 1/2 x 11 forms from a personnel
folder. Various paper weights and colors. All had top 2
hole punches in them.
Results = Many 'check paper' errors. Many tries with errors
occurring on different sheets. What was an error page
one time went through without a problem the next time.
Answer = Reverse the paper so the 2 hole side goes in last.
Result = Flawless operation, no problems. Copies at receiving Fax
were very good.
I only mention this because my fax machine at work would take the 2 hole paper the normal way without any problem. I have only had this unit for less than a month but I have had no problems sending, receiving or copying. I have the Fax set to 'Fine' and the copy to 'Best'. A power loss may result in you having to reset the time and date, all other settings are saved. Print heads are cleaned automatically, even with the machine turned off. I don't know how that will affect the ink supply.

Product Description

This full-function fax machine has a base no bigger than a letter-size page to fit into most small offices. It needs only one phone line, as the automatic fax/telephone switch sends the call to the handset or to the fax. The easy receive mode will still receive the fax if you pick up the phone on a fax by mistake. The FAX 375MC uses a thermal print method on Brother Therma Plus paper or standard fax paper rolls. The Therma Plus feels like plain paper and comes in a long-lasting 98-foot roll. The anti-curl system eliminates bothersome paper curling, and the automatic cutter leaves a clean cut edge on each fax. Faxes come out clear and sharp with a 64-shade grayscale and smoothing for better image quality. The message center handles all your incoming calls. The built-in digital answering machine takes up to 15 minutes of calls and stores them for remote retrieval. The 512KB memory stores up to 20 fax pages for broadcasting or out of paper reception. Incoming faxes can also be forwarded or remotely retrieved in case the recipient is out of the office. Or have the machine notify your pager when messages have been sent. The machine has a 16-digit LCD display and is Caller ID ready. It's easy to send a fax with auto redial, an alphabetical phone number index and 60-station auto dialing. Load up to 10 original pages in the automatic document feeder for unattended faxing. The quick 14.4kbps fax modem sends a fax 40% faster than a 9600 bps fax machine. If the line is busy, the machine will automatically redial the number every five minutes for 15 minutes. The delayed transmission feature lets you cue a fax to transmit at a later time for different time zones or lower phone rates. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Poor Design & Performance
I have had other Brother fax machines, but this one I put back in the box and in our storage room after 12 days. I was so unhappy that I called Brother to come out and please fix this machine. Brother came to my office and tried to fix the problem twice. Finally they gave me another machine to try. This one was even worse. Brother then tried to fix the second machine (same model) but failed. It seems thatthe interior rollers that pull the pages through to be faxed have to be adjusted so accurately, so as to pull the paper through straight. The faxed sheet (that is received at the other end) is twisted and longer than the origional. This is unacceptable when faxing die drawings and other related small drawings. For contracts and proposal letters, the faxed sheet looks very unprofessional. This model is only good for occasional family faxing. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Won't Last Longer than Two Years
I've noticed a few positive reviews for the MFC5200C, and all I have to say is - we'll talk in a few months and see if you still feel that way.

The machine was good for me for several reasons - multi-function, fair print quality (if you don't need photos), and moderate printing speed. However, after 21 months of low volume usage (5 print/copy per day), I got the dreaded "Machine Error 41".That is essentially the death dirge (the printer head needs replacing). The repair cost is $164, which when compared to the cost of the machine is a "no-brainer" solution -- don't!

I've talked to a couple of technicians in my area, and they said that I am not alone in my Brother problem. If you want my opinion about this particular Brother product, I say buy if you have the expectation to replace it every two years. If you are planning on keeping it longer, then go elsewhere.

1-0 out of 5 stars Cautionary Tale About the Brother MFC-5440CN
I should say up front that I'm reviewing the Brother MFC-5440CN, which is very close to the MFC5200c, but it's not quite the same model. However, there's enough overlap that my comments are still germane.

I've been in the market for a multifunction scanner/FAX/copier/printer that can speak Ethernet on a heterogeneous LAN.My primary computer is an Apple Macintosh running Mac OS X 10.3.5.So far I've tried the Hewlett Packard HP PSC 2510 and the Brother MFC-5440CN.Neither is worth owning.

I bought the Brother MFC-5440CN two days ago (2004-10-10) after returning a Hewlett Packard HP PSC 2510.(After struggling with Hewlett Packard's obsequious but useless technical support from March 2004 through September 2004, I finally asked if I could return the unit directly to Hewlett Packard for a refund. In early October I returned the unit. The Hewlett Packard HP PSC 2510 is all but useless with Mac OS X because of a myriad of show-stopping bugs ranging from the bundled application software down to the broken wireless Ethernet implementation.)

Right out of the box, the Brother MFC-5440CN seems to be a more "serious" unit than the HP PSC 2510.It supports a finer-grained FAX resolution than the HP PSC 2510, and it seems slightly less cheesy in construction, but I have no reliability or performance data to support that impression.

I've printed a couple of black-and-white pages so far.The print quality is less than ideal. You can see light horizontal lines in the otherwise black ink when you print a 2"x2" black square.Other than that, it seems all right for printing simple things like business letters with no graphics.I haven't tried to print pictures or anything especially colorful.

The Brother MFC-5440CN has an automatic document feeder which produces scans that are almost as good as what the integrated flatbed scanner gives you.(It's not _quite_ as good. You can detect some "choppiness" in the document images generated via the automatic document feeder, reflecting the jerky movement of the paper transport.)The automatic document feeder employs a narrow scan window rather than the full flatbed scan area.

The Brother MFC-5440CN is terrible at scanning anything other than plain old dark-text-on-white-background documents. For example, a yellow credit card receipt that showed up with no problems on the HP PSC 2510 would be virtually unreadable when scanned by the Brother MFC-5440CN.Playing around with the brightness and contrast controls only seemed to make it worse.Even getting dark-text-on-white-background documents to show up acceptably was a challenge: the Brother MFC-5440CN tends to lighten everything to the point where text is hard to read.I had to pull down the brightness and adjust the contrast to a fairly extreme setting just to make text look decent.

The Brother MFC-5440CN comes with Presto! PageManager 4.0 software (abbreviated "PPM4").PPM4 is product made by NewSoft, a company based in Taipei, Taiwan.(See URL: http://www.newsoftinc.com).For some reason, Brother bundles PPM4 even though NewSoft, as of 2004-10-10, is already up to Version 6 and doesn't mention anything earlier than Version 4.8 on their website. They make no mention whatsoever of Apple Macintosh support on their website. It appears that PPM4 is dead software.

PPM4 has serious problems. Not as serious as the debilitating bugs associated with the garbage that Hewlett-Packard ships with their HP PSC 2510, but dysfunctional enough that you have to make special concessions to it when it's running.

First of all, its user interface doesn't adhere to Mac OS X usability guidelines. It has a nonstandard file directory tree widget (apparently from a third-party toolkit) that doesn't even allow you to select multiple documents (let alone directories) at the same time. This is a real pain if you're trying to delete multiple items at the same time. For example, if you've just scanned in 50 pages via the automatic document feeder, and you decided that you don't want any of them, you have to delete every scan file, one by one.The program provides no way to let you delete them all at once. Also, menu items such as "Delete Document" have no corresponding accelerator keys mapped to them. This lack of attention to detail is prevalent throughout PPM4 and raises serious questions about competence.

All scans performed under the control of PPM4 are deposited in a system-wide directory ("/Applications/Presto! PageManager 4/My Pagemanager/Inbox/").This tells me that the people who wrote the software weren't properly acquainted with the requirements of multi-user operating systems.

Once you scan more than about three documents from the automatic document feeder, PPM4 becomes unresponsive, as it takes forever to finish processing all of the files that have just been scanned in.No progress bar, no nothing.(PPM4 is obviously a single-threaded application.Incompetence aside, there's no excuse for writing an application like this in a single-threaded manner when you expect to encounter long stretches of processing.)There's some horrific inefficiency inside PPM4 that makes that application instance unusable from that point onward. The only workaround I know of is to kill the PageManager process and move all of the generated TIFF files from the "/Applications/Presto! PageManager 4/My Pagemanager/Inbox/" directory into your destination directory of choice.

This workaround exposes yet another design flaw in PPM4.PPM4 appears to make very naive assumption that it is the only agent that will ever modify the "/Applications/Presto! PageManager 4/My Pagemanager/Inbox/" directory. The PPM4 GUI doesn't update when you modify that directory; there's no "refresh" button either.Somehow it keeps some mapping between filenames in that directory and the thumbnail sketches that are shown in association with each of the filenames. This association is very easily corrupted.Expect to see the wrong thumbnail showing up for any given graphic file.(I'm not sure that the corruption results only from users modifying "/Applications/Presto! PageManager 4/My Pagemanager/Inbox/" or not, but at any rate, the application shouldn't act this way, and the fact that it does is further evidence that the authors were rank amateurs."Finder" can cope with users modifying the underlying filesystem; so should PPM4.)

One other bug in PPM4 is that the main system Menu Bar doesn't always update when you give PPM4 the main application focus. The Menu Bar may remain bound to whatever previous application had the focus (such as Finder). When this happens, PPM4 is basically dead in the water. You have to go to a command-line tool (such as Terminal) and kill the process yourself.

Finally, they claim that you can bypass the TWAIN mechanism when scanning, but in practice this often leads to dialogue boxes with bizarre error messages popping up when you initiate a scan.

Furthermore, using different page manager software isn't going to improve the mediocre scan quality.

Finally, Brother's tech support is bad. They're only open on weekdays, and even then it's not 24-hour support. The FAQs contain zingers like this:

Date: 23/09/2004
ID: faq000314_000
TITLE: I'm using Mac OS X. How can I uninstall the drivers?
DESCRIPTION: To solve this problem, please delete the installed drivers and reinstall them.

(To their credit, they do give you some useful information after that, but it's obvious that they're sloppier than they should be.)

Brother USA's website (http://www.brother-usa.com) is a mess.If you search Brother's "Support Options" page with the keyword "driver", you won't even run across the page mentioned above.I found it somewhere _else_ on Brother USA's website!Their website is a mess.(NewSoft's website is also far from perfect.I didn't look very deeply at it, but two things that caught my eye right away were the abundance of interesting variations on the English language and the avoidance of anything related to Apple, Macintoshes, or Mac OS X.)

I'm going to return my Brother MFC-5440CN because the scanning is poor and the software, while not as pathologically dysfunctional as that of the HP PSC 2510, is still bad.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Great Versatile Multi-Function
I'm writing this review after reading some of the highly negative ones shown here. I use the MFC-5200C in a busy home office primarily as a printer and fax machine. I have been extremely pleased in terms of performance, its ability to do a variety of things as well as the individual machines I've owned in the past, the easy to read manual, etc. I love that I have a document feed color copier for under $250 bucks! That alone makes this product well worth the money. I find it to print just as fast as my HP Deskjet, which is perfectly acceptable even when I'm printing 30 or 40 page documents. Plus, my HP printers would mangle every other envelope where the Brother handles them with ease. There is a lot of versatility with this machine that I haven't even used in terms of its ability as a scanner and photo capture center.I've had mine for over a year with zero problems and I mean zero. Works like a champ and I would buy another one in a second.

1-0 out of 5 stars Worst printer I've ever owned
From the get-go, this printer caused me nothing but problems.I had printed about 10 sheets when the print quality fell through the floor.Ran through the print head cleaning process numerous times, per the manual, with only marginal improvement. After burning through several ink cartridges trying to clean the sorry printer, God-forbid, I bought non-OEM ink cartridges.Eventually, the printer displayed the printer equivalent of the "Blue Screen of Death" Machine Error, and I was directed to take the printer to the Authorized Repair Center.Three months and many phone calls later, they finally told me that the print head was shot, and that it was going to cost 25% more to repair the printer than I paid for it.Additionally, it wasn't going to be covered by the warranty because I used non-OEM ink!I've used non-OEM ink for my Epson and HP for years with NO problems, and now this is the cause of my problems with the Brother??I don't think so.I'll never own another Brother product again. Please contact me if you wish, for details.AVOID BROTHER LIKE THE PLAGUE!!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Highly INFERIOR Multi-Function device
I am a systems' engineer...TRUST ME WHEN I TELL YOU BUY HP MFC DEVICE AND SPEND THE EXTRA $ if you can afford it on a 3 year exchange warranty.Brother truly makes inferior mfc devices.Don't fall prey to the B.S. Ad slicks they spend more money on hype than invest in producing a high quality product. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great laser printer and fax
I bought this when I started working remotely and it has been great. The laser printer is high quality, and although it takes a bit of start-up time to print one page (as most laser printers do), I am able to print hundreds of page without any problems.

I use the fax regularly, to send and receive, and have never had a problem with a mis-fax or missing an incoming fax.

I have not used the copier much since you have to feed in the pages, but whenever I have used it I have been happy with the results.

Overall, if you need a multifunction I highly recommend this one.

False paper jam error kept popping up and you can't clear it up. I have to un-plug and power strip.
Worst usability of "rich" functions which has been hidden so deep inside complicated menus, I can't remember even some comoon simple fax tasks...you need manual from time to time.
The ink cleaning, canceling job, such simple task may take minutes to finish and you have no idea what is going on.

(3) Poor manufacturer -- scanner died in two month and the repair shop said they saw a bunch of this returns...difficult to match it with brother name

BTW, that is my first purchase of Brother and I promise, it is the last one. I would go for HP, Canon...

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't buy this
Be warned: This machine requires $50 worth of ink every two months even if you never print anything. And it will not send or receive anything if any of the cartridges are empty.

It only holds about 50 sheets of paper, and it wants to feed all 50 sheets at once. Expect 3 or 4 paper james on one 5-page document.

I'm so sick of it, I'm mixing up the ink cartridges to use up my supply. When the ink is all gone, I'm going to make some fine adjustments to it with a baseball bat and then store it in a dumpster.

5-0 out of 5 stars But you can't beat the customer service...
Even considering what the previous reviewers have said, we have TWICE had breakdowns on this machine, and even though it's now a couple of years old, both times Brother has replaced it for free.

1-0 out of 5 stars Unfortunate purchase...
I used this as a printer, I never faxed with it.I'd use it to print b&w documents and color cd/dvd labels. The print quality is never good, especially if you use bidirectional printing, that really makes it look awful.Additionally, if you are trying to print up a good image the printer constantly makes black blots from all the clogs coming out.The cleaning is pointless, it does nothing at all.

It hasn't died, but it no longer prints an ounce of magenta.Removing the entire printer box indicates that no magenta is getting through to the printer head.
This is unfortunate because the warranty only just expired, and I have a big box of ink cartridges.

I bought them in bulk because this printer goes through color ink so fast, you MUST replace the cartridges when it says, and the cartridge will still have a good bit of ink in it, what a waste and polluting too.
The brother cartridges just stick it to you for how long they last, $36 is a lot of money for three tiny ink cartridges that lasts for so few print jobs.I bought a bunch of them for a discount and have all these unusable cartridges now.I feel like a real sucker, I hope you don't make my mistake.

It's clear by the other posters I am not the only one unhappy with the print quality or ink consumption.
I wish I'd never bought this printer, it was not only expensive for how long it lasted, it was very expensive to use because of how much ink it gobbled down.

Very unfortunate choice.

1-0 out of 5 stars What a horrible machine ... !
In addition to all of the ink problems listed by the other reviewers, the print quality is not very good.It clogs constantly. If you aren't printing full color documents every day, the ink hardens in the nozzles and print quality gets worse and worse. The machine's cleaning function does nothing. Before my machine died, at the age of only 22 months, the yellow and red inks would not work at all.

But wait, the worst is yet to come! These machines are terribly unreliable.Mine died.My boss's died after 2 years. My wife manages at Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf, which bought these machines in mass for it's stores-- and they are constantly breaking down.

One day my 1800C decided to display a Machine Error 41 code.Customer support was no help. They directed me to the local Brother service center. The service tech was kind enough to warn me that Brother designed this error code to apply to half a dozen different things, ranging from the print head, to the motherboard.Technicians have to replace the parts one at a time, rolling the dice and hoping that they fix the right thing. If not, they move on to the next thing and so on.The first fix will cost 100 bucks, by the second fix, you could have bought a new machine.

This machine was designed to jerk the user around, ink-wise and repair-wise.If you buy one of these machines after reading the reviews here, you are a sucker for punishment.

I've moved on to a Canon MP390, which has MUCH bettr print quality and way more cool features. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Office Workhorse
Have used without problem for 4 years now.Would recommend to anyone. My only advice is to always use Brogher manufactured Toner.I tried off-market toner and had predictably poor results.Switched back to Brother manufactured toner and received high quality fax's again.

2-0 out of 5 stars Great sending, poor receiving
We purchased this fax because our old one grabbed several pages at a time when sending. This Brother machine SENDS great - the memory feature is awesome. However, the paper supply constantly jammed when receiving faxes. It claims to hold 200 pages of paper, but it could never manage much over 50 without serious jamming issues.Even with a small amount of paper in the supply tray, we would have to clear the paper path about every third fax received.Customer service tried to help, but to no avail.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Performance and a Great Price!
The speed and quality of this fax machine is great. The pages are scanned very quickly, so you don't have to stand at the fax all day when sending multiple pages. I have been very pleased with this product and its abilities.

5-0 out of 5 stars This fax is awesome
We had the MFC version of this fax in our office. We're talking 2,200 LASER faxes, copies, etc. (print-outs if you have the Multi-funcion Machine), for (price) per toner cartridge. This laser fax is the best deal out there.

Apparently, Brother hasn't figured out what megacorps like HP have-that it's best to sell customers the device at an o.k. cost-then guage them with the laser cartridges (price).

Another FYI: In general, injet faxes and printers tend to give you only 200 sheets per (price)cartridge and the quality is poor.

Brother ROCKS!!!! The print quality is great, the price is great. I highly recommend Brother laser fax and MFC machines.

Re the problem above--If you're running your phone, fax and modem off the same line--it's probably time for a DSL line.

3-0 out of 5 stars Needs dedicated phone line
While it appears to do everything it promises to do, in standby mode it puts noise on the phone line that can significantly slow the data transfer rate for another modem on the line.

Brother's Customer Support's answer to the problem is "unplug the fax" when you want to go online with your computer. ... Read more
