5-0 out of 5 stars After one year and alot of abuse, its still running strong
I purchased my Zaurus sl-5500 over a year ago and have never been disapointed.I choose the sharp pda because of the short lifespan that plagues most pda models (ahem... ipaq...).I had owned several sharp products in the past, including an imported md player , and still have all of them running strong.Sticking by sharp was definitly a good choice, because my zaurus has taken all kinds of beatings and is still running perfect. My zaurus has been dropped in a toilet, fallen out of my pocket while skateboarding, been tossed around all over the place, frozen, and sat on. Although the plastic casing has its share of scratches and dings, the zaurus still performs perfectly.I have it coupled with an ambicom wifi card and have loved its wireless support.I can scroll instant message and surf ubersite from the toilet with ease.I have changed the gui and have added all kinds of software and never had a problem with the system.I was afraid that my lack of knowledge would hurt my ability to use and take advantage of the zaurus's capabilities, but the software is intuitive and easy to use.The zaurus runs great as a stock pda, but it excels in its custamizability and compatability.I would recomend the zaurus to anyone looking for a pda, above any other brand.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great PDA for the money
Right now the 5500 is around $200 and it is hard to beat this PDA at that price. Sure the 5600 and 6500 have fancier features, but they are still priced too high. The best thing about the Sharp Zaurus running Linux is the enormous amount of free software that has been developed for it. You can make this little PDA do ANYthing! My only gripe is that Sharp hasn't put more effort into making syncing the Zaurus with Linux easier out of the box. It's as if they assumed a Linux PDA would only be popular with Windows and Mac users. How dumb is that? Otherwise, my favorite PDA.

4-0 out of 5 stars The swiss army knife of palmtops
After reading a variety of reviews on a number of palm devices, I decided to try the Zaurus. So far, I havn't been dissapointed with my decision. The Zaurus GUI is responsive and the applications appear to work well and intuitively. The text reader application did lock up on a huge file. Other than that, no problems.

As stated previously, this product's greatest strength is the Linux OS that lies underneath rhe hood. I've downloaded a few UNIX shell based tools that have compiled and worked without a hitch. I love using Opera with a d-link cf wireless card. It required almost no tweaking and works great. The Zaurus is made of plastic but appears to be fairly durable. The battery is a bit underpowered on 5500 (The 5600 has a battery 2X larger.)

If you plan on networking the 5500, read the security information regarding ftp weaknesses in early models.

Overall, a great value for $200!

3-0 out of 5 stars Zaurus 5500 PDA
I was a Sharp Wizard user, so I was excited when they came out with a more sophisticated PDA.I was swayed by the price and the pull out keyboard unit.Since I purchased it in November 2003, I have not been able to sync anything but the address book and calendar. This is a waste to me.After several e-mails and phone calls to Sharp, I am considering chalking this up to a bad experience, and jumping out of the Sharp bandwagon and purchasing a Palm or IPAQ.I am truly disappointed with this product and pray that you do not make the same mistake.

5-0 out of 5 stars I love it!!!
This is an absolutely great PDA.It runs linux and there is tons of free software available for download. It runs, Java and Python, my two favorite languages so I can easily write my own software for the Zaurus. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Nice.A really cool James Bond Factor. Unlimited ideas
This camera is not oing to replace your multi-megapixel digicam or your 35MM camera. But for it's size and convience it takes pretty good little pictures. It has a real James Bond Thing going on that makes it fun to toy with. And in good lighting it takes very acceptable pictures.I like that it is part of the Zaurus archeecture meaning that you could (or someone else could) write a program for video, time lapse photography, video conferencing, etc, etc.

So it's more than just a camera, it potentially is your Zuarus's eye on the world :-)

1-0 out of 5 stars Not worth the money
Pictures taken in average light and inside are very poor.May be ok for outside pictures. Software and ease of use are good. You have to remove the screen cover to properly use it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Poor picture quality, hard to focus
Vertical lines and noise in anything but bright outdoor
    sunlight.Poor color taking indoor pictures.
The manual notes these and other flaws, and specifically documents that thiese "are not a fault".
    Very hard to focus.
    Expensive for what it is.
I returned mine.Money is better spent on more memory.

4-0 out of 5 stars works for me
I just took over 500 pictures with this camera while I was on a trip to Europe.I learned a lot about it in the process. It has some nice features:it's lightweight, durable, easy to plug in and remove from the Zaurus, and it really impresses people. You can store thousands of pictures at the 480x320 resolution, or about ten thousand with a 128MB SD card.On the downside, it drains the battery quickly, and the picture quality varies from so-so to fairly bad.The camera is unusually picky about the lighting level - it does poorly with low light, and also poorly with mixed bright/dark lighting. If you get the lighting right, it can take "acceptable" pictures. If you're the kind of person that cares about picture quality, you're not going to like the output much.If you're like me, just taking [inexpensive] pictures to stick on your homepage, it works like a charm.I'm glad I bought it. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great little Linux box
The SL-5600 comes with QTopia, an embedded version of Linux. It looks really good, and the software ROCKS!It can read and write Microsoft Word and Excel files, etc.

Synchronization leaves a bit to be desired. It doesn't work flawlessly, and only works with Windows.

HOWEVER, the Z's true strength is in Open Source softare. You can keep the included QTopia and install Linux apps.Or, you can replace QTopia with one of the OpenSource Linux distributions, and have a Linux workstation that gives you complete control. With the large amount of available RAM and two expansion slots (SD cards at least to 512 MB and CompactFlash cards), you have room to install anything you need.A huge amount of OpenSource Linux software is available for the Z, and most of it has been scaled down so that it takes a lot less space than it would on a full-sized machine. What this equates to, is that a 256 MB SD "hard drive" is equivalent to a 5-10 gigabyte hard drive on a full-sized computer.

OpenEmbedded (www.OpenEmbedded.org) and now Debian Pocket Workstation (http://www.pocketworkstation.org/) are two of the available Linux distributions. What's exciting about Debian Pocket Workstation is that you can run QTopia and a complete Debian distribution on the same machine.Switch back and forth as you need to.You can also build a complete cross-compilation tree on your own Linux computer, and compile and/or modify available open-source software for the Z.

If you want a simple, turn-key organizer, the Z probably isn't for you.But if you want a complete, powerful computer that fits in your pocket, the Z is the best machine you can get.Definitely worth its purchase price.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good but beware the screen
    Pros:
    -Hella fast
-Runs anything you throw at it
    -Stable
    -Nice keyboard design
-I read in a review..."unlike some with Win CE saying that they have something like a pc in the palm of their hand, the Sharp Zaurus SL-5600 IS a PC.
-Bought from Amazon and box is clearly marked PXA255. Thats an intel 400mhz process....the best in the PDA business for under $300..are you kidding me!
-Will take CF I&II (which means you can buy a Creative Muvo2, rip out the microdrive and use it in this PDA...in fact Hitachi has already tested the 4gb MD with this unit).
-Will take SD (yeah, it'll take both).
-Memory it comes with is incredible.
    -Software possibilities are enormous.

    Cons
    -Screen (Poor quality)
-Screen (You will see a dark spot in the top right corner since the technology used for the TFT does not fully and properly illuminate the complete screen)
-Screen (did I say the screen is bad...oh yeah.
-Bulky (its light, but dont plan on putting this in your pants pocket unless you have cargo pants.
-Yeah - try using your stylus to close a program...for some reason it frequently takes more than 1 tap......

I'll try for a couple of weeks...if the cons outweigh the pros then its returnamundo...

2-0 out of 5 stars Not worth the trouble
    Hardware:

This thing is bulkier and has a smaller screen than comparable products. The thumb keyboard is comfortable and surprsingly fast but is of questionable utility as an integrated feature.Mine had a defective battery and frequently needed hard resets, returning it to its factory state and wiping the internal memory (which had everything I downloaded for it).Sharp directed me to the retailer and the retailer directed me to Sharp.Rinse, repeat. Then call your credit card...

    Software:

    OS
The directory structures are ridiculously deep and don't intuitively correspond to the folders in the windowing system. It doesn't come with any reasonable tool for browsing your directory tree either - you will have to buy or download one.

    Hancom suite
This is a pathetic attempt to allow some MS office compatibility. It is useless for any powerpoint presentation over about 1MB, withfonts under about 28 pt, or with any graphics, and it throws away half your screen real estate by not rotating the display for slideshows. The Outlook app will really, really screw up your calendar, meetings, and contacts if you dare import anything back to a PC that you modified on the Zaurus - for example, it will make all recurring appointments into individual ones, meaning you must keep deleting them until infinity if it changes, or it will want to duplicate all of your contacts with new screwed-up, truncated copies.

Linux is one of the only reasons to buy this device. There is a nice base of avid users, and you will be able to find a ton of free applications for this device.I am confident there will be a support base of hackers for the Zaurus for a long time.If you don't tinker with programming enough to appreciate the open OS or aren't a pathological Windows basher, I think you will be dissappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exactly what i Want
This device is almost perfect for the linux user who wants something smaller than his\her laptop. In order to appreciate this device, you really have to like linux. If you have never used linux, dont bother, get yourself an M$ windows pda.

If you're like me and love linux, you'll love the zaurus. You can get virtually all main stream linux apps for it (gcc, make, apache, mysql...the list goes on and on).I especially like that fact that it has a java runtime, and with the addition of compiler (try ibm's Jikes compiled for zaurus) you have a pocket java development environment.

The fact that it has CF and SD slots means you can have your wifi and your extra storage in at the same time, which is a great plus.

The fold out keyboard is slightly slower than a full size, but still light years ahead of stupid handwriting recognition on other devices (although the z has that too)

There are tons of different roms availible, from sharp and others. One that fixes the pxa250 cache errata is definatly required, as you may have heard this is a bug which affects performance. But if you flash with a special kernel it fixes this bug and allows you to clock the device up to 471 mhz! NICE!

The Only thing I would add to this device is a built in DOWNSTREAM usb port, so that you can plug in usb devices.A Compact flash Usb card is availible from ratoc (for $150). I bought that too and now i can connect external HD's, Gamepads, Keyboards, Extra Wifi's, and maybe even printers or cd burners.

While Pocket PC Users can say things like "my Ipaq is LIKE a pc!" The zaurus user can say "my zaurus IS a PC".
There really isnt anything you cant do on the zaurus since its a full linux OS.

I would whole heartedly reccomend this product to EVERY linux user

5-0 out of 5 stars Very nice PDA
Picked up my Zaurus last week.So far so good.I believe most of the 5600 have the PXA250 with the cache bug in it.The PXA255 fixes the issue and has been reported seen in some Zaurus 5600 but not all.The one I received is an older one based ont the information I found in the /proc/cpuinfo file on the device.B2 stepping which was available up until around March of 2003 - about the time these went out the door probably. While the speed is not intolerable, the idea that it can be faster makes you want it to scream along. There are patches that with good instructions available that can increase the speed should you take the time to research it. The main thing that I like with the Zaurus is the flexibility - Its linux - add what apps work for you, ditch the rest.Your not stuck with some inferior thingbecause its part of the system.

As a side note, installing additional apps is quite easy - I used the provided ftp program and dropped on a new package... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Sharp Zaurus 6000L
I jsut received this yesterday and here's my first impression.

I've been using a Sharp Zaurus since the pre-release 5000D.I've had a 5500 for 3 years and I've loved it.I like having a handheld computer vs. a PDA.I have a Treo 600 so I've gotten very familiar with the Palm OS.Hey, it's ok but it's not Linux.I had a Psion 5mx which I loved and used for years. As for Windows devices, forget it.With all the fun I have had with Microsoft operating systems on my computers over the years, I have no desire to wrestle with a scaled down version of bloat and the Blue Screen of Death.

The 6000L has a gorgeous 480 x 640 display. It is beautiful. The best I've ever seen on a handheld, bar none.

One of the biggest attractions of the 6000L for me is it's ruggedization.I'm hard on things.I drop things a lot and I work in a factory, all hard edges and lots of places to get hurt.I've taken out my 5500 at work and my hands have lost their grip and voila! flying Zaurus. It's survived, but I think I'm better off with something a bit more robust. The 6000L seems sturdier and that is what I need.I will put it to the test.

I took the 128 mb SD card and the 128 mb CF card from my 5500 and put them in the 6000L.I will probably replace the CF card with something larger.I use the CF card strictly for storage and file transfer.

People complain about the PIM functionality of the Zaurus apps.I find them perfectly suited to my needs. The Hancom apps included work extremely well with MS Office apps.

Just one complaint so far, directed at Sharp.Hey, Sharp, are you listening? How about a Linux version of the PC applications? It seems silly to have a Linux handheld and not include Linux apps to sync and transfer files.

My first impression is I love the 6000L.The apps are great, I can use a lot of things from the 5500 on the 6000L.I haven't had a chance to test the wireless yet, but I will soon.I expect it to be solid and reliable.Solid reliability is something I've come to expect from the Zaurus and Linux.

4-0 out of 5 stars Writing this on my 6000L
I'm writing this on my new Zaurus. Firstly to the reviewer who complained about the handwriting recognition, it's the best I've seen. You can train every letter to the way you write. The other side to this pda is that, if you need software that doesn't come with this pda, you better be willing to tinker with downloaded packages.

5-0 out of 5 stars What can I say?Simply the BEST in every category.
What can I cay that has not already been said? The 6000L does everything you could ever assk of a notebook, much less a PDA.It has USB host capability, meaning it can control OTHER USB devices...like USB JUMP drives, USB hard drives, etc, etc.

And that is just ONE of the expansion slots, in addition, it's got it's crade connector, SD card slot and CF card slot.More expansion than you will ever need. And you don't even need to wasteslot using WIFI, becuase it is BUILT-IN...with other PDA's and NOTEBOOKs, you would have acard sticking out of the unit blicking obnoxiously, telling the world you are accessing the internet (or work's VPN)...this is much subtler, there is very little that lets anyon know you are really not making a grocery list, but rather surfing the web or emailing a friend.

The only significantly negative review I have seen here at Amazon is from someone who never actually bought one...If you think it costs alot for approx seven big ones, then you have obviously NOT tried this out.People seem to think smaller means it should be cheaper, but when you pack as much punch into a PDA as a notebook has and shrink it to this size, it SHOULD cost a premium.

Sure, there are a few minor quibbles with this unit as with ALL PDA's and notebooks, but when you compare this unit to it's closest competitor...the specs will blow you away on this unit.

This baby is worth every penny and then some.I won't go into all it's features as that has been covered previously in detail, but I will say that even all those feature merely scratch the surface of what is available (or will be available) to do on this fantastic handheld.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Best PDA / Notebook Replacement on the Market
This item is amazing. It has all the features a PDA, with LINUX power under the hood. There are so many great linux applications that can be used with this it is hard to know where to start.

It also plays MP3 files and MPEG movies (that's right, MOVIES) and to top it all off it's got built-in WIFI...not only WIFI but a full-functional web browser and email client. The web browser is amazing as it can view any web page, not just those written for PDA screens, this unit with it's hi-res 480x640 screen resizes webapages to fit on the whole screen and still be readable !

If you need more room, press a button and it switches to landscape mode !

It integrates your contacts as your email address book and plays tons of games.

If your a techie, this unit will connect into LINUX systems and has a fully functional shell to allow you to log into other linux machines and servers....even through a VPN.

To call this a PDA is really like calling a full blown LINUX laptop (that just happens to have organizer software on it) a PDA.This is much more of a notebook replacement that fits in your pocket. With built-in WIFI, and SD card AND Compact Flash slots, you can utilize this with any digital camera to view, edit and store your images.

Truely an amazing buy at less than seven hundred dollars.

Nothing, and I mean nothing, can compare to the features, applications and expandablility of this little amazing device.

4-0 out of 5 stars Bigger and better than the 5xxx, but needs more work.
The device has some very attractive features; the display is strikingly bright, there is a way of changing from portrait to landscape mode, turn on or off the backlight (saves power), the built in WI-FI makes it also a very good hot spot locator and impromptu web browser (in the unlikeliest places!) The battery lasts for ever, unless you use the Wi-Fi.
In the not-so-bright side; according to Sharp, software for the SL 5x00 will not work on the 6000, and there is no compiler (yet) for it, which means that you are stuck with the apps Sharp shipped it with.
Another, more serious, problem is that the stylus often goes out of alignment so that it needs very frequent recalibrations (a couple of times a week).
I am also having problems witrh the alarms feature in the calendar. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Only half useful without a power cord
This is exactly like the docking station that comes with the Zaurus, EXCEPT is does not have a power cord.So if your docking station fell and broke, this is a good replacement. But if you want another docking station so you can sync both at home and office, you will need to get a power cord, too.

The ad implies that this is a complete solution to docking at home and work ("Handy extra docking station for your home or office") which is misleading at best, and an outright lie at worst. At the very least they should try to up-sell you on the power cord when you buy the docking station.

The power cord sold by Amazon is over [money]--but you can get the travel cord elsewhere for around [money].

4-0 out of 5 stars It's the docking station, minus the AC adapter
It's exactly the same as the docking station that comes with your zaurus, BUT it doesn't come with the AC adapter for charging.

It's not necessarily obvious from the description, and the other review is just wrong, so be warned.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic charger, works perfectly.
If you're considering buying this, then you probably already own a Zaurus... then you know exactly what it is.It's the same docking station that comes with the unit (I have the 5500).Why are you reading this, then? You don't need me to convince you that it's great, just buy it.You know you need that extra docking station at work!

But, as for a review of the docking station itself:It's great. It plugs into a USB port in the back of your PC (or Mac?).With the driver CD, you set up all of the appropriate drivers and it actually sets up a TCP/IP connection via the USB port to the device in the cradle. You can ping the device and connect to it through other means... very cool stuff.Just SSH into it, or run VNC!

You also use the additional power cord, and plug this docking station into the outlet. You can then charge your Zaurus just by putting it in its docking cradle... (which is why you'd need that extra one at work!)This is pretty standard stuff, but it's still worth mentioning.

All of the software set up flawlessly for me on Windows 2000, and I've had no hardware problem at all.Definitely a solid unit.A necessary accessory for one of the best PDAs out there. ... Read more
