4-0 out of 5 stars Good Buy
I recently purchased this PPc.It was the first one I had purchased and found it very easy to use.I used it mostly for taking notes, and keep an organized schedule after I purchased the Targus Universal Keyboard, which works very well with the e355.I was impressed with the battery life on medium settings which gave about 3-4 hours of battery life.

Hopefully this review will give a student a little insight into this "student" view of this.

4-0 out of 5 stars A pda to have
I am a high school teacher. I wanted something to take notes on and to remind me when homework was due. I searched far and wide reading review after review. I got alot more than that with the e355. I have been using it for about 3.5 months now.
I'll just list the Pros and Cons becasue i could go on all day!

Pros:
1. Great speed.
2. Works right out of the box.
3. Excellent battery life (3.5 to 4hrs continuous running)
4. Crisp display. (especially for video playback)
5. Smooth buttons that feel pretty nice on your fingers.
6. Good price for the quality you get
7. The speakers on this player play audio in the best way i have heard for a small speaker unit. You would not believe that a pda could do so well with sound. It plays my mp3s, wma, anything and don't forget the videos.
8. It has a SD card slot so you can expand the memory at any time. the SD card slot has a dummy card that protects it from being damaged by dust or other particles.
9. Quick charge time. Good size storage built in, 64mb.
10. Windows Mobile 2003 is much much much more stable than its predeccessor.
11. It's much much much thinner than many other pda's i have reviewed.
12. It's much more resiliant to 'falls to the floor' than the Dell or Ipaqs for example. I'm a teacher. I can guarantee you...running around the class will lead to a fall on the ground. It has a metallic covering. (no shaking inside!)

Cons.
1. Sometimes if you use up close to 90% of the memory, it stalls.
2. The 'record audio' button is placed near the top so sometimes taking it out you may mistakedly begin recording. (this can be disabled though so it is not really a con)
3. It does not include the ability to 'go wireless' for internet. You can still access the internet though but you need to be connected to your computer. I did not need wireless internet just yet. When it does become ubiquitous...maybe then i'll go for something else.
4. The battery is not removeable. By the time this actually becomes a problem I'll be getting a new pda..about 2 to 3 years from now.

THis is an excellent PDA is you do not need wireless internet access right away.
I would recommend it with all authority people out there.

5-0 out of 5 stars good pocket pc
I dont know whats going on with amazon.com because I bought this pocket pc a month ago here for 165 dollars and now it costs more than two hundred.Anyways its a great pocket pc with 32 mb storage capacity, runs all the latest games fine (www.handango.com or www.pocketgear.com).My only complaint is that I have no clue whats going on with the battery on this thing. If i charge it and leave it alone for one week the battery drops to zero.

1-0 out of 5 stars Faulty At Best
(1) It stops working if you live in a cold climate such as Vermont or Minnesoda.
(2) Sometimes it stops working for no reason.
(3) I've owned mine for less than a year and used it very gently; the screen no longer responds to teh stylus
(4) I bought it at an anon. major electronics/computer store in Manhatten. I've tried to take it back under warentee four times without any sucess, and the clerks tell me it's just "acting finicky" and to "wait it out"

1-0 out of 5 stars Toshiba has Terrible Customer Service
I was torn between getting the HP 1935 and the Toshiba e355.I finaly went for the Toshiba because of the faster processor speed and the one year warranty. But after one month I started to have problems with the system always coming up with errors. I called the tech support and they said that if I sent it to them they would work on it but it would cost about $100.00 so I figured I could live with the error messages. Then a tragedy happened and the screen got cracked. So I called to see if they would cover that and they don't cover the screen damage in their warrenty. That would have cost $190.00 to replace, so at that price I could just buy a hole new Pocket PC.One Year Warranty, I ask "WHAT WARRANTY?"I should have gone with the HP 1935 in the first place.I spent two hundred on a little paper weight because withthe cracked screen it doesn't do anything anymore. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars So cool...
I ordered the h1940 on Amazon with free shipping and it arrived the next day! (The website said it will take 5-9 business days...). I've had it for 3 weeks now, and I must say this is quite a piece. I shopped around in stores, and this was the smallest handheld device on the market. It works great with my desktop PC, and keeps me very organized. Now that I'm so organized, I don't know what to do with all this free time I discovered I have, so I'm here writing reviews...

It doesn't come with a case or a cover, so you'll have to find one or risk damaging your display screen. I got the Belkin leather case designed for this model for $11. If you're interested in upgrading to Wi-fi, you can get the SD (Secure Digital) Wi-Fi card for about $90-100.

Update: I'm reducing the ratings to 4 stars because of the following: I mentioned earlier that you can go wifi by adding an SD wifi card for $90. I discovered later that the iPAQ H4155 already has built-in wifi and it only cost $400. In addition the H4155 has a 400mhz processor. If you are interested in wifi connectivity I would recommend you buy the H4155 instead of this one. I wanted to save money so I obstained from the h4155, but now I wish I had bought that one instead of this one. Not that this pocket PC isn't good, in fact it's great. But if you want wifi this isn't the right choice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Powerful Machine in a Tiny Package
Had the 1940 but, with the addition of integrated Bluetooth wireless communication and a faster processor, the h1940 is what I really needed. So much power in a machine that weighs just 4.37 ounces and is very small (4.46 x 2.75 x 0.5 in). Also like the upgrade to Microsoft® Windows® Pocket PC 2003 Professional that is included. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Toshiba out front
Toshiba are the industry leader. This machine is fast, the screen is great, and the memory is completely serviceable. It gets an enum failure error which requires a soft restart from time to time, but it is fully functional, top-of-the-line.I will be upgrading to the 805.

4-0 out of 5 stars Seems to be good
As my first PDA I've not had too many problems with it. It does seem to have an issue of needing to be "reset" every few days (not a hard reset, just hitting the reset toggle with the pointer device) otherwise some stuff does seem to stop "functioning" particularly the wireless utilities (in my experience). However this appears to be a problem with Pocket PC 2003 rather than Toshiba themselves.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money on this device
This PDA seems like a good deal, but its not. Unless you buy the extended warranty and you don't mind dealing with the many quirks of this pockpet pc, do not get it. First, the WiFi was difficult to use and I could connect, even when only 8 feet away from the router.

Also, after a couple of days, the screen would not react to tapping, it became useless. I'm not saying that this particular thing might happen to you, but there are quite a few things that can go wrong simply because it has so many features.

So if you want to avoid this frustration, just go with an IPAQ or DELL AXIM. They are much more reliable and have much better customer support.

4-0 out of 5 stars good one
hi ,this is a good item.works fundoo ....connectivity via wireless is great . lacks yahoo messenger but you can install msn messenger . Acroread also installable

1-0 out of 5 stars Toshiba does not support their PDA's properly
Based on the track record from Toshiba on their PDA line, customers can expect to NOT receive support for the many bugs and problems seen in their PDA products. The e740 has too many unresolved bugs to list. The e75X series has been suffering from "enum errors", dead units within days and other problems requiring owners to keep swapping units trying to get one that works.

Toshiba's horrible record of support on their PDA line is the reason to avoid this product. They refuse to address the problems on their units and quickly orphan owners of units that are less than a year old. They prefer to make users pay full price to get newer models so they can resolve issues or run the llatest software from Microsoft.

Buying a Toshiba PDA should not be considered a long term solution as you are liable to be left with a problematic and unsupported unit in a relatively short amount of time. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Sony CLIE PEG-TJ35/U from Tech for Less
I recently returned my reboxed Sony CLIE PEG-TJ35/U from Tech for Less.PalmOS 5.1 caused some of my repair tracking programs to not work so I returned it within four days.Tech for Less charges a 20% restocking fee; fair enough but I asked to defer that until I can research which older Palm OS will work.

It seems that PalmOS 4.1 works with my program but now Tech For Less says that I had to take store credit at the time so no deal on credit the $19 that they charged for restocking fee towards a older Sony Clie PEG-T665C.

Oh well, they loose and another seller on Amazon .com got my business.

3-0 out of 5 stars I wish this could be a better review...
I bought my TJ35 about 6 months ago.As others here have said, I am a true Sony fanatic.I researched carefully before choosing this item, and felt as though I got the best PDA for my money.Considering I use my PDA about 4 hours a day, that is saying a lot!

Let me say that I love the screen of this unit.It hardly scratches, is crystal clear, and the picture is very sharp. The software bundle is very robust. The flip cover is cheesy and the telescope stylus drove me nuts, however!

IMPORTANT: The batter will last a long time for any PDA if you do this one important thing: in the Prefs general section, look for the item labled "beam receive" and turn it off.I think it is under the general section, but I'm not positive. This will vastly improve your battery life!!!

All worked well until about 45 days later when the unit suddenly stopped hot synching and charging.I mean, I literally hot synched the unit, installed another program 10 minutes later, and nothing would work.I tried everything I knew, but couldn't get it to work.As I built the three computers in my house and have an IT degree, I feel that I did an extensive amount of troubleshooting.I called the company and had to go though the "Did you reboot your computer" steps with the person for 45 minutes just to get a ticket to send the product back. Then I had to wait 17 days for Sony to send the item back to me.

This is where it gets interesting. They determined that they couldn't fix my brand new device and sent me a refurbished model.I called up the company to complain, stating that I didn't want someone else's rejected model, I wanted a new one like I sent them.Especially with all the backlight problems the model has had.I was assured that the model sent to me had no backlight issues.

Wrong.Less than 30 days later, the backlight goes out.I call up customer service again, demanding that I receive a new model, since this is the second defective one I've received. No go.I told them I didn't want to go without a PDA for three weeks every two months.I was told by a supervisor that he didn't care how long I had to go without my device.

After more than 25 phone calls to Sony Customer support, I finally received a service return box in the mail. And then another. And then another. With three different return authorization numbers. These boxes came the week I moved, so of course I didn't have time to send the item off then. And after that, I became seriously ill and was diagnosed with a significant long-term condition that has left me barely able to leave the house. So now I will send the PDA and the three authorization forms to Sony and see what they will do.Probably nothing, because it's obvious that the company cares little for the insignificant hard-working customers who shell out two week's worth of grocery money for their product.

Who knows, maybe next Christmas one of my family members will buy me a Tungsten!

1-0 out of 5 stars Backlight Hell
The old saying "misery likes compay" has never been more true.I'm somewhat comforted by reading about others who have also expressed extreme frustration over the backlight issue with this PDA.Frankly, I loved it.It is smaller than my first PDA (a Handspring Visor) and had an awesome screen. It works like a charm with Outlook at work.A real nice machine. Then the backlight went out.And they fixed it.Then it went out again. And they fixed it.Then the light went out.And they aren't returning my e-mails.I'm officially done with Sony.I should have gone wth my gut that said up front, "don't buy a Sony product" but the guy at Best Buy assured me that my past bad experiences with Sony products were history.Live and learn.Go with your gut.Don't buy Sony.

4-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for my needs.
I've had this PDA for 2 months, and have resisted writing an early review such as "I just got this thing yesterday and it's sweet!".

I wanted a Palm based PDA that could play MP3's and had no camera. Software is not an issue for me since I can download and install whatever I want so I won't address that here, suffice to say that it does what I need it to - manage contacts, appointments, play MP3's.

Build quality is generally very good. The slider button at the side (which I is the only one I find myself using) feels very solid. My only complaint with the build is the roller in the center - it's made of light plastic which seems incongruous with the metal area at the side. It should be heavier to the touch. The wand could be bigger - people with large hands might find it awkward to use.

The screen is not extremely bright, but bright enough - no complaints. Battery life is very good, I haven't charged mine in 3 weeks and have used it a little bit every day.

My main complaint would be the lack of cradle, but I paid $140 for mine at CDW, so for the price it's no big deal - I can always buy one later.

3-0 out of 5 stars Adequate but flawed
I have used many pocket PCs over the years and regularly upgrade them. This is my first Sony and there are a couple of things about this I like. It's nice and small. It has a "hold" button that lets you listen without the screen being on.

However, there are several very annoying things about this model:
- the cover is flimsy, as others have commented it lasted days before busting. This is annoying (what were they thinking?) but not that serious
- hotsync frequently turns itself on in my bag (I think because the on button can be knocked on). This wastes battery and that's important because the battery does not last long because
- there is no option to dim the screen for different usage situations (which saves power). This is a sensible feature of IPAQs that Sony have missed out.
- software other companies throw in for free (like simple games and cut down versions of office) are items you have to buy seperately. There are games loaded, but they are evaluation copies which expire.
- Because the battery runs down quickly, you need two power cables (for home and office). These are UNECESSARILY expensive and the part that attaches to the unit is flimsy. You cannot buy or plug a seperate power cable into the unit, it comes with the syncing cable. As you tend throw this kind of stuff into a suitcase - the fliminess is quickly apparent. I am on my 3rd.

SO, add another US$60 for power cables, plus say another $40 to get software others throw in free, and you have something more like the real price of the unit.

This is dissapointing from a company that prides itself on design and knowing consumers. They have not thought about how people will actually use it.I can see why they are giving up manufacturing these.

5-0 out of 5 stars Much better than any third-party stylus
I bought this pack because the stylus that came with my Clie N710C was one of those that had the light in the tip, and the darned thing broke. The OEM stylus (original from Sony) is the only way to go, since they don't break under normal usage, fit perfectly into the stylus hole (the other one didn't do that either), and look good too.

3-0 out of 5 stars A bit light but acceptable
I prefer a much heavier stylus - so I find the Sony version a bit disappointing. But the price is reasonable and the quality of the unit seems in order. Overall an average effort.

4-0 out of 5 stars Best option there is
Yes these are definitely pricey but they have the same solid feel of the original stylus. The other, cheaper replacement stylus packs are so cheap and hollow feeling. I will tuck my other, cheaper replacement packs away for an emergency and order another pack of these right now.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not enough information
It was difficult for me to determine what stylus to buy. This one did not fit my Clie.Nothing wrong with the product, just not what I needed. ... Read more
