5-0 out of 5 stars Great bang for the buck
Lots of of room.Good image.Great gamers monitor.

I was worried about spending so much but am happy after so long as it doesn't break. My old 19" syncmaster 955df is still working so that's a good sign.

Had it about four months now.

1-0 out of 5 stars OMG Was I Ever Disappointed!!!!!!
I bought this monitor after an exhaustive search for a good flat panel turned up diddly squat.First few days were GREAT, numerous different jacks and options both for hook up and onscreen adjustment(s).But after awhile it started to develop curvy almost vibrating kind of lines in the screen, eminating from the cortners, sides, and center.Almost a wave effect. Most times you dont see it unless your on a high contrast or dominant backdrop such as whites, blues, etc.Its also extremely noticeable whenb playing World Of Warcraft specifically when your dead and you have all those whites and grays on the screen.Im forced to return it and try another one, but I am sure itll be more of the eventual same. When that happens, Ill be switching to BenQ's top notch FP231W flat panel display.STAY AWAY FROM THE 1100DF.ITS NOTHING BUT A PAIN IN THE ASS.......:O( ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Best of the best!
I bought this beutiful peace of art about 6 months ago, probably even longer ago, and it is STILL one of the best CRT Monitors out there. What else would you need then a 22 incher? I did have some shipping problems, but I was delighted when I recieved this product. It's easy to setup and adjust (just plug it in!). There will be an installing thing when you first open up the computer. Just put in the CD which came with the monitor and install it. You don't even have to install the drivers from the CD but I recommend it. Goto viewsonic.com for the latest drivers if you're having any problems getting it to work, but that's a highly unlikely thing to occur. I can't tell you enough how nice this product is. I've had NO PROBLEMS at all from day one. I've actually left the monitor screen on for 2 weeks without closing it and it still works fine. It's been more then 6 months since I got this thing and it's working in mint condition. The monitor itself is very nice looking, but its pretty damn big as well so make sure you have enough space on the table for it before you buy it! The demensions are posted on viewsonic.com. And if you have to choose between the white and black version, get the black one. It looks so much nicer then the white one, and it's the exact same price. I love this monitor =)

1-0 out of 5 stars Nice...except when you need service.
My brand new Monitor...less than 6 months old...starts smoking and spitting sparks...then little flames come out of the top....If I was not home...I am sure my house would have caught fire.

So...I send this thing back...it cost me 82.00 to have it packaged and shipped by UPS (Viewsonic won't pay me back)

Viewsonic will replace it...but...since they don't have one in stock...I have to wait. All the resellers have plenty in stock but the factory is out?
I have been waiting over 3 weeks now.

Also I have to call them to get this information. I would think after they promise a 5 day turnaround once they recieved the old on...they would at least give me an e-mail to explain the delay.

If I was not so impressed with the product (when its not on fire)...I would tell everyone to stay away from this company. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Loved mine for 6 years.
I had this monitor for 6 years. It worked great, looked great, everyone who saw it wanted one. Last night it died : (. It was acting funny during the day, flickering and stuff. It made some really weird sounds and went black. I was talking on the phone and ignored it, then I smelled it. It was glowing orange inside and everything was melting (I assume, from the smell). I'm sad. I loved my monitor. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Shadow mask is noticeable around edge of screen
My only complaint regarding this monitor is that the when viewed closer than 3ft or so, the shadow mask is particularly noticeable around the edge screen giving the image a pixilated look.In the middle of the screen the image is exceptionally sharp and bright. I'm trying to decide now if this is something I can get used to or if I'll look to find a replacement for this monitor.Other than this issue I'm very happy with the monitor.

5-0 out of 5 stars Better than AG
First I bought a Samsung 1100DF (21") it had nice specs .20 mm dot pitch, but the picture was not acceptable: it was dark and blurry, so I returned it back to Amazon.
Next, (figuring that I need to spend more to get an acceptable 21" CRT) I got aNEC-Mitsubishi MultiSync FP2141SB-BK 22", this one had those annoying AG lines and the picture was distorted. It also had a poor focus in the corners and a useless "superbright" mode which just dulls and blurs the picture IMHO. Supposedly this is one of the best AG monitors out there.
Then I thought: seems like I have to cash out for an LCD since I cannot find an acceptable 21" CRT. Well, in order to get one of these with the same viewable (20"), you have to spend at least 900 'rubles'.So I decided to give the G220f a chance.Well, let me tell you I am finished buying. This is as good as it needs to be.It's sharp, clear, and bright enough, and NO AG lines (being it's not an AG monitor of course)
Right now I have it running at 1600x1200@ 85 Hz.And I am happy with the picture.Had to do some geometric adjustments first to straighten the corners, but that's OK.

If you read one of the reviews below, a user complains that his is grainy. Well perhaps it's grainy if the he has it set at 800x600, in that case he should have bought a 14" or a 13" dumb terminal screen with that cool green text, nice and sharp at his preferred resolution. It would be ridiculous to buy this size display and then low ball the resolution.

Anyway, until LCD's are as fast as CRT's and have comparable price tags, I recommend this thing to anyone looking for a large display.Be you an editor, a gamer, a grapher or a lamer, you cannot go wrong here.

One thing I would change is the fact that the monitor cable is hard wired to the monitor. However, in the unlikely event that any part of the cable goes, I will have no inhibition of popping out the guts and re-soldering (but that's just me).

5-0 out of 5 stars Couldn't ask for a better monitor
I had honestly never heard of View Sonic before I went comparison shopping for a new monitor. This model came up from time to time, and even though it's a little pricey, I decided to go for it. I have no regrets and plenty of praise. The resolution is marvelous and it was so easy to set up. This is a value at any price!

5-0 out of 5 stars great monitor and great service
When I first received my monitor, the black level saturation was extremely poor. I did this by comparing the monitor with another older monitor that I have. Called up tech support and after exchanging a few emails later, I got my RMA number. I shipped out my monitor as soon as I received my Fedex shipping label and a week later, I received a new monitor from Viewsonic. Sure enough, the new monitor has really good black level saturation and the colors are really good. Right now, I am really happy with my monitor and the tech support has been really excellent in my case.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Happy With Mine
I looked at alot of 21" monitors before I settled on this one and I have to say that I am extremely pleased with it. I looked at both trinitron and diamondtron monitors and didn't like what I saw at all. I use trinitron monitors at school on a regular basis and have never gotten used to the lines running across the screen 1/3 from the top and bottom. Aside from the "grille lines" I found the colors were too vivid and true whites seemed to have a slight reddish brown hue to them. So I knew I wanted the best shadow mask monitor I could find. This is it. While the picture isn't truly flat, the screen is; if you sit too close you can see the curve of the picture but as long as you sit 12" from the screen you will see a crisp, flat image, and the colors are wonderful. The picture gets a 5 star rating, the monitor overall gets 4 stars because of 2 things; 1 the cord that connects to the computer is permanently connected to the back of the monitor. This is bad because if the cord breaks you need a new monitor. 2. This thing is HUGE!!! The footprint isn't any bigger than that of my old 21" but the height is, if you have a computer cart like me with a shelf over the top of the monitor you will need 30" plus to fit it in. In short, great monitor but now I need a new desk! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great long-term investment
I highly recommend this monitor as one who has used it 8 hours a day, five days a week, for the last 18 months. The image quality is superb and has not diminished. I've found the monitor great for general publishing use, including a lot of time in Photoshop (graphics & color-intensive) and FrameMaker (B&W/text intensive). I use it at 1162x864 and there is no flicker. I previously used a Sony Trinitron, and I rate this twice as good as the Sony.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bright, clear picture with awesome resolution...
This monitor is one of the best 21" monitors I've used to date. I've been using it for a year now, at 1600x1200, true color,at 85Hz refresh.

The picture is sharp and bright, with accurate colors, and the controls are quite intuitive. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Initial and Present Review
My 21" EIZO monitor finally failed. So I went in search of a replacement. My intention was to buy two 20" LCDs to replace it. Allowing them to run 1600X1200 with less eye strain because a 20" LCD is substantially larger than a 21" CRT. Unfortunately while researching the LCD's it became obvious that at this time ALL LCDs are inadequate for very fast First Person Shooter games (i.e. SOF2) leaving blurry stomach twisting smears whenever moving. Since LCDs are not yet ready for F.P.S. prime time yet I went back to CRTs. My two 19" ViewSonic LCDs at my office are very nice so I thought I would give ViewSonic CRTs a look. I purchased two G220f monitors and an ATI 9800XT video card,(with two video outputs), to run them.

These ViewSonics...are lousy. Several times a day I have to "make adjustments" as the pictures shrink and wander all over the screen, sometimes to the extent that Desktop Icons start getting clipped off. This occurs on both monitors sitting on the same desk hooked to the same computer. I now have them set with large borders so I don't have to herd them back on the screen so often. This brings up another annoyance. ViewSonic's on screen menu system is one of the poorest I've seen. They have a confusing menu system requiring loads of button pushing for simple adjustments. For example If you want to adjust the Horizontal Position you must press the "1" button, (clever huh?) then using the up/down arrows proceed to the Horizontal Size/Position menu selection. Next press "2", (obvious huh?), then press "2" again to get to "Position Adjust" because it's a sub menu of "Horizontal Size". This I have to do at least twice a day! Oh and don't ponder any of this too long or it will all disappear. If you select "Viewmeter" to see what refresh rate your video card is dishing out it doesn't stay on long enough to get thru the usual blanking while the monitor figures out a new video setting, requiring reselecting.

All this is bad enough but the worse thing about these two G220f monitors is that they are just not very sharp.. They do not even come close to the Eizo that I replaced. I do lots of CAD work on my computer and it was immediately obvious that more zooming and less of my CAD image was going to be required. This is very annoying as it is the same as running a lower resolution. Since I cannot read the drawing text at 1600x1200 that was easy to read on my previous monitor I must zoom in, say, 10% this means I can not see a lot of the drawing that I'm working on which in turn means I have to pan in the middle of drawing a line to place it's end point. This slows things down. Costs me time. Time is money...

In summary; they work, not well. It isn't just one monitor it's two identical monitors that are new so this isn't a fluke. I would never purchase another ViewSonic CRT unless someone I trusted could demonstrate a model that avoided these problems. I would have bought another Eizo for twice the money if they still bothered to sell CRTs. Do yourself a favor look elsewhere.

March 14,2005:

OKAY: Update. After 8 months here's where we are.

The warm up wandering has diminished to a point where I notice it rarely. This is good. The two monitors have not gotten any clearer though they are both merely adequate and still no where near the EIZO league. Now the bad news. One of them failed today. I turned it on. The light went on but no picture. Then after about 10 seconds there was a large "PACCK!" and then the screen lit up. The image is so blurry that nothing can be read. The image is oscillating right and left about 1/2" at a high rate, perhaps 60Hz. The entire screen pulses randomly brighter and dimmer at about 1-3Hz. Dang! I just love sending 60 pound items through UPS! Cripes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Monitor
Ive had this Monitor for 8months now...and its still working perfectly.....no missing pixels....simply perfect....ive used and been around 100's of Monitors of various brands....and this is the best..bar none... and with the same viewable area as a 22' monitor...this is a great buy

5-0 out of 5 stars My 2nd Viewsonic
My sisters' monitor was old, tiny (14in. vis) and blurry so i figured i'd get a new one and give her my 3 year old 17in. Viewsonic. This thing is great. My friend also uses a Veiwsonic and she's a grapic astist. I've been using this everyday for the last 4 months. I've heard nothing but good things about Veiwsonic and I like the picture. I WOULD RECOMEND THIS PRODUCT.

1-0 out of 5 stars Viewsonic 220 and 225 series awful!
Our company purchased two years ago thirty two (32) Viewsonic 220 and 225 monitors. As of July 2004, eighteen (18) have literally gone up in smoke. These monitors are miserable pieces of junk and pose a safety hazard.

3-0 out of 5 stars Beware of defect
Purchased this monitor December 2001.I use monitor for gaming and normal computer use.Happy with picture quality - however - entire screen developed pink/purple color blur/distortion. The entire screen appears pink or purple and makes monitor almost unuseable. Returned monitor for refurbished replacement under the 3 year warranty beginning of 2002.Replacement monitor developed same problem after 2 months of use.Just made the call to have the monitor replaced again.I was advised by NEC that a large portion of Accusync 120 monitors are having this problem and that they are going to be sent to engineering to figure out the problem. While I am overall happy with NEC's customer support, I am not happy that I purchased a monitor with unexplained defect.Beware.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Monitor!
My Hitachi Superscan Pro 21 inch monitor became blurry after 4.5 years, so it was time for a replacement. After a lot of looking, I decided on this monitor mostly based on its features and the Amazon reviews. I am very glad choose this monitor.

Although the screen not perfectly flat, it is much flatter than my old Hitachi. One thing that impressed me is that other than vertical and horizontal adjustments, I needed absolutely no other geometry adjustments (rotate, trapezoid, pincushion, etc., needed no adjustments). Maybe this was because of the flat tube inside?

When I first booted up the computer, the image did appear washed out, but that was because this monitor is so bright. After lowering the brightness to almost the lowest setting images and text look very sharp. I use it at both 1280x1024 (85Hz) and 1600x1200 (75 Hz). I enjoy the flexibility of the different resolutions a CRT monitor offers compared to a LCD.

For the price, this 21 inch monitor offers great performance. I would buy it again!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best of the best!!!
I just had this giant 21" NEC monitor this week. The first time it opened, it impressed me very much, because despite its giant size, it is crystal clear and crisp. The clarity is similar to Sony 15" monitor, but its size dwarfed it. Size matters, especially in reading and studying. It motivates the student all the more, without the added strain, making the review a more pleasant multimedia experience. I tried the CD material for Oracle DBA and MCSE, and this 21" monitor's hugeness and clarity, increased my motivation to read more and strain less. This is a best buy.Of course, there are other 21" monitors, but again its price beats its contemporaries. My advice to educators and students, go for this monitor. It will be a big help in passing all those exams, and certifications...

5-0 out of 5 stars Very nice display for the price...
I've only had this monitor for a few day, but so far it's great. I bought this monitor for a system I use for programming and 3D gaming. It has proven to be great for both of these tasks. The text is very sharp and the graphics are great as well.

There is a slight geometric imperfection in one corner, but I have seen very few monitors that have 100% perfect geometry in this price range.

I have a dual monitor setup on Windows XP Pro, and I replaced one of my 17" monitors with this monitor. I do have one problem now, this monitor is so much sharper than my remainingg 17" (Relisys) that I think I may have to purchase another one!

Bottom line: great monitor, good price, good warranty, buy it!

5-0 out of 5 stars It is the greatest!
I purchased my NEC AccuSync 120 on March 26th and I am very pleased with the picture quality. I do CAD, 3D renderings and play computer games and it has performed very well. The size is well worth the cost. My last monitor was a NEC and it is ten years old. I purchased this monitor because of price and quality. I would reccomend it to anyone. If I were to complain about anything it would be with the tracking capabilities of either Yahoo or UPS. For several days the Internet tracking said it was in Illinois for several days but in fact it was still moving toward me and showed up before I expected it. In any case I was very happy with Yahoo and UPS for thier sevice. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent performance, but comes with a slight distortion
I'm using the FE2111SB on a dual-monitor setup: the other monitor is a KDS Avitron(trinitron tube) 19" CRT (great monitor btw). I've had the FE2111SB for almost a year now and it's been performing great since I took it out of the box, so nothing has happened yet (knock on wood). Although, even though i've had it for a year, I still have one itch to pick at though.

At the very top of the viewable area (about a .25" from the top) there is a slight vertical linearity distortion (a portion of the monitor stretches vertically). I mainly use the monitor for work on graphic design so I can't afford to use smaller resolutions than 1280 x 1024. But, i've tried using different resolutions with different refresh rates, i've even bought a new video card (Radeon 9800 PRO) and so far, no solution. I thought maybe it could have been the gravity of where i'm located, or maybe the 2nd monitor could be affecting it? I don't really know for sure but it's not that big of a deal anyway. Although I'd like to think it's essential to have a picture-perfect work area right, because its like having nails on a table rub against you or a desk with frayed edges- it's bothersome, but you can always work around it.

Other than that, color reproduction, moire-removal, and all the professional features of a good monitor are up to par. Although, i'd love to have a USB or FIREWIRE hub built-in like some Diamondtron monitors do.

I would definitely recommend this monitor if you want to step up to a mid-to-high-end level quality CRT display. It has a big ass on this bad boy, so make sure you have a wide/deep as well as a durable desk to park it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Great monitor--WHILE IT LASTS!!!
I have had this monitor for a little more than a year and it is a fantastic monitor:great picture, lots of options and the downloadable software to adjust is awesome. However, you should know it has one problem--reliability.The problem is the tube loses its sharpness over time.

After only a little more than a year my tube got so blurry it gives you a headache to use it.So, I call NEC--as its still under warranty.Rep says no problem this has happened before (but denies it is a design flaw) and will send a refurbished one, and then I pay to ship the broken one back.I figure ok, $80 is fine for a new monitor. Then, I get the refurb--BUT--its got the same problem and has a manufacturing date of only a few months ago.

Again I call NEC and complain as to why someone didnt check before they sent me a dud. While the rep was nice and offered to send another one, I said enough is enough, just pay for the return postage on the refurb and I'll buy a new monitor.

End of story--great monitor, great software, reps are friendly, BUT beware you may be playing musical monitors.

Eventually, after much research I got a IBM c220p and it rocks! (now if it only lasts for more than a year).

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Flat Panel for the price
I'm using two FE2111's in a dual monitor setup for one of my graphics rigs. For the price of one 20" LCD display you can buy two of the best CRT's on the market. And this is one of the best CRT's I've ever used and I've used a lot of them. It has rich colors, sharp images (right up there with some of my best LCD displays), three brightness settings (normal, picture, movie), and a relatively easy to use OSD for tweaking the color balance to 'just right.'Although it's listed as a 21" monitor on Amazon, it is technically a 22" with a 20" flat viewing area. It's text quality is awesome at the native 1600x1200 resolution (and at any resolution that keeps the 4:3 ratio for that matter). The previous review mentioned that there was a problem with stretching to the border on 1280x960.I don't know what his problem was but both my monitors can fill the screen (with stretch to spare) at any 4:3 resolution. He might have been running an unsupported refresh rate. This is an awesome monitor for any use and at ~550 it's a great deal.

4-0 out of 5 stars After exhaustive research ....
... I settled on the NEC Multisync FE2111SB for my monitor of choice. Why did I choose this particular monitor?I'm primarily a gamer and need the quick response times of a CRT over the up-and-coming LCD's. I own an NEC LCD1760V (on a second system) and its 16ms response time is excellent but it just does not have the same sheer color depth and "quicks" of a solid CRT (expecially projecting greys and deep blacks).Anyway, back to the review.

I had trouble finding what I thought were honest reviews of the monitor but ordered it via Amazon. It arrived some 8 days later and I eagerly sat it in place. I chose black to compliment my desktop setup. I am running a Radeon 9800XT to push the picture so consider that as I continue.

The first thing I noticed was how brilliant the bright the display was. Crisp, clear and a stunning image. Unfortunately, the flat panel glass (which covers the actual screen about 1/4" behind the mask had some specks of dirt upon it (small area just up and left of center). I dutifully attempted to wipe away the specks of dirt but to my horror realized the dirt was BEHIND the flat glass. I just paid for a new monitor, I expect the monitor to be essentially perfect. I was unimpressed.

The second (and final issue) came as I was tinkering with resolution setting. The standard rez I typically run my system on is 1280x960 which keeps things sharp, round and just the right size. A higher setting and things get out of ratio (circles become ovals) and text gets slightly blurry. So, as I began to adjust the image to fill the screen (tall and wide), the monitor could not stretch the image wide enough. At 100% wide, the image still had 1/4" to 1/2" black space on the left and right edge of the screen. Unacceptable. I tinkered with settings but nothing would correct this limitation.

Needless to say, with both issues being, well, an issue, I'm returning the monitor. I have not yet decided if I will repurchase the same monitor. So, the dirt was an aberation however, the resolution situation is a short-fall. Hope this helps, best of luck. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Pleased
I recently graduated from a 14" TV to this 27" one. I wanted something that was both bigger and compatible with DVD, Video, and a home theater system.
I am very pleased with it. Especially with the DVD. The picture is so clear and lifelike it is like being there when I view my favorite Musical DVD's by Bill Gaither and His Homecoming friends.(Also sold on Amazon.com} It's great to have an TV like this that makes in-home concerts possible. I compared the price with a place a man I work with claims always has a low price. This price was far better than where he recommeded.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great TV
True, the price is slightly less at walmart BUT, when I bought it from Amazon it ended up being cheaper anyway.I had gotten a 10.00 off coupon from the Amazon mailing list.Besides that the above person forgot tax.If I was to buy the TV at walmart I would need to pay tax.I didn't have to pay tax on Amazon...so people please keep that in mind.

Now for the TV, for the price I think it is great. We have had it since Xmas, and it works fine, the picture is great. But keep in mind this is a really big TV.I had a 27 inch in my house already, but with the side speakers and everything, it ended up being bigger. All in all I think it is a great TV, and the price is good since there is no tax. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Good monitor, questionable software
The 201B monitor has a sharp display. I run it at 1600x1200 with small fonts and all the print is easily readable. It has a standard 15 pin D-sub and BNC connectors so you can hook two computers to it and switch back and forth with a front panel selector switch.

One disappointing item:the monitor has a USB connector and software to let you adjust it with a PC program. The software loaded from the supplied CD but refused to work on my Win2k PC. I found out from Philips custumer support that the USB adjust feature only works with Win95 or Win98.It doesn't say that on the box or in the manual. Its hard to imagine why Philips would add an expensive feature to a product but then only support it on an obsolete OS.Most users will have to use the normal front panel buttons for adjustments.

5-0 out of 5 stars Space-Saving 21"!
This 21" monitor is a real space saver.I prefer the tube type monitors and did not want to go to an LCD.Most 19" & 21" monitors would take up too much space on my desk. This one is more compact and has a nice picture quality.Pretty reasonable price too. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

The 30PW850H's 30-inch Real Flat, high-definition widescreen picture tube affords today's best home cinema viewing when used with a progressive-scan DVD player or an outboard digital set-top box for DTV reception. Picture enhancements include a sophisticated 3D Y/C digital comb filter, which improves quality of incoming interlaced video signals by removing blurred edges between colors and reducing dot crawl (tiny, moving dots of color along a sharp color separation in a vertical line, as in a depiction of a character's striped t-shirt).

Eye Fidelity provides the choice between different line doubling and scanning techniques--progressive or interlaced--so you can reduce motion artifacts like jagged edges and stair stepping, viewing material in progressive scan (480p) or a line doubled (1050i) picture.

Velocity-scan modulation improves the definition at picture edges, creating sharper images by slowing the CRT (cathode-ray tube) beam's horizontal scanning during demanding work--say, when rendering transitions from light to dark parts of an image--and speeding it up when scanning easily rendered sections, like broad dark areas.

A shadow mask is a thin sheet of perforated metal behind the screen that restricts electron flow, each hole in the sheet corresponding to a single pixel. An Invar mask uses an alloy that's especially resistant to the high temperatures generated by the electron beam, allowing in a brighter, clearer picture. Further, a feature called Active Control continuously analyzes incoming signals and optimizes picture color, sharpness, contrast, and digital noise reduction 60 times per second.

The set offers stereo reception with 10 watts power per stereo speaker, and onboard Incredible Surround processing simulates surround sound from any two speakers.

Two sets of high-definition component-video inputs (1080i/480p) accommodate a set-top box/HD satellite receiver and a progressive-scan DVD player, while side and rear composite- and S-video inputs accommodate other hardware. Rear-panel audio/video outputs make it a cinch to hook the set up with your home theater surround receiver for a truly immersive AV experience. A 0.125-inch headphone jack lets you listen in private. The set includes an NTSC tuner for standard TV reception and comes with a universal remote control.

4-0 out of 5 stars Stunning picture!
This set has me hooked on HDTV.The picture is so vivid on HDTV channels, I will sit and watch even bad programming just because it looks so incredible.I just wish my satellite service offered more HDTV channels to watch.

Set is extremely heavy, as with any tube sets.Only problem -- the "On" switch on the front of the set broke after 3 months, and labor warranty is for only 90 days. The cost of replacing the "On" switch -- $300! -- and moving this heavy monster, made me just stick with using the remote to turn it off and on.

5-0 out of 5 stars Couldn't be more happy
You can get all the tech details in the other reviews - I just wanted to add my 2 cents worth.

I purchased this TV from BEST BUY in 2003. We have enjoyed our TV every since. Everyone that comes over and sees it are very impressed by the picture quality. We only have Directv - no HD yet.

I would highly recommend this TV to anyone looking to spend in this price range.

I paid 999.99 in '03. I hear you can get it for 799 now. Go fo it.

5-0 out of 5 stars You get what you pay for, in this case it's a lot!
Like many other reviewers I wanted to research as much as I could before I bought a new TV set, especially online.I found a website that offers refurbished Phillips products at beyond bargain basement prices so I decided to go with them.It was shipped to my door almost 1 year ago and I love the TV so far.It is indeed a heavy piece of equipment but then again, what tube television this large isn't?In fact, like RCA's I shy away from big TV's that are light because I tend to think they are not built well, and when I saw one opened I did not like what I saw.I have not used the HDTV signal yet since I really don't need it that badly but soon I will try the HDTV antenna with an HDTV box.Remember, as other reviewers have said, this is an HDTV "ready" TV so you will need an external HDTV decoder to view HD signals.

With the TV hooked up to my basic cable the picture looks fine, not great, not bad, but that is all because I am viewing an analog signal on basic cable. It will never be that great coming from an analog source but with that said, it is still a quality picture that I have no complaints about so far.

I have my DVD player hooked up with some quality component video cables running into the HD input. My DVD's look excellent but for those of you who are not too familiar with them the aspect ratio can be different. There is anamorphic, which is usually 2.35:1 and then the widescreen, which is 1.85:1.If we do the math you will see that the anamorphic will not fit perfectly in ANY mode, 21.15:9, whereas the widescreen 1.85:1 will fit pretty well on 16:9, 16.65:9.There was one reviewer who complained about the screen chopping it off, well, that is why, so blame it on the movie industry:)The one time where I saw HD quality TV was when I was watching some extra features on Sea Biscuit. All I can say is, WOW!Well I can say some more actually, it was a phenomenal picture especially when you are used to analog cable! One last note on adjustment, you have the ability to adjust the picture up and down when viewing an analog signal in a widescreen format. This way you can have it cut off the top and bottom equally so it really isn't bad to watch 4:3 TV in a widescreen format without much stretching.

Now, about the options of the TV.For the most part I am very happy with the remote and the adjustability of the TV, but there are a few little annoyances. One is the fact that you cannot directly choose which input you want to use.If you are watching TV and want to watch a DVD for example, you must cycle through Input 1, Input 2, and then you will get to the CVI.Then to go back to TV you must cycle through Input 3 and Input 4.I have learned to push the button 3 times in a row so it will go directly to the right input but it is an oversight on their part. The remote works fine and I have yet to find the need to use the buttons on the TV itself so I can't comment on those.

So, in the end I am very happy with my TV.It is a widescreen TV with a great picture at a great price.Just remember, this is an entry level HDTV so it might not have the up-converting, built-in HD box, etc., but what you do get is a great TV at a great price.I would always suggest that people looking to buy this TV should visit some showrooms to see it in action before buying.

4-0 out of 5 stars Is it just me or is this set not good if it's not HD?
I still give it a 4 stars because I see the HD quality which is really good for this price and I'm planning to move to HD soon. But as of now, I'm still on analogy (bcos of those too good to turn down intro price for basic cable). And the clarity is less than desirable. Perhaps it's bcos I've been watching my friend's high quality HDTV for too long. Or perhaps as my friend said it's bcos the resolutions magnify the flaws of analogy signal? Or maybe I don't know how to set my TV correctly to make it produce high quality performance. Anyone has any advice for me? I'm beginning to wonder if I got a defect set. I'm too lazy to return (and this is too heavy to move anyway). Think I'll have to wait 6 mths til my intro special basic cable expire to try it on digital to see if there's a different. I'll still appreciate advices if anyone can offer. Thanks.

4-0 out of 5 stars Greens And Reds
This set has a great picture, using component cables, and a progressive scan DVD player. THE PROBLEM, and I saw a reviewer, Trent Duke, mention this... When using either component input, and especially when watching a black and white movie enhanced for 16:9 TVs, at least on mine, there is a reddish hue running across the top and bottom of the screen, with a larger green hue running across the middle. In color movies, this mostly just shows up on skin, or other light colors.
I've called Phillips, but unlike other reviewers, I spoke to Americans, who were curtious, and tried to be helpful, though the problem is not yet solved. Phillips warranty requires that you have at least 3 different ASC repairmen attempt to fix your TV, before they'll send a replacement. So far, I've been to just one, but he tells me this is more of an assembly line type of thing, that could not be fixed, even if he replaced the tube. The TV works fine on the yellow AV video cord, with no noticeable green or red hues. But for an anal video and audio file like myself, I need to watch movies in the best possible quality. What troubled me, is that the repair, who seemed like knew what he was doing, said that most HDTVs have this kind of problem, and not to be suprised if a replacement TV will have this "missaligned purity problem" even worse. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars I can't believe they don't make this any more.
I've had this monitor for at least 2 years, and it's still the best picture ever. It's amazing how swindled everyone's been by the LCDcraze, considering how poor a quality the image usually is.
Anyway, I know it's irrelevant now, but since I saw the bad review someone else gave, I just want to point out: the guy was wrong. He probably had it next to a strong magnetic field (maybe it was on the same circuit as his refrigerator or an old television).

1-0 out of 5 stars Poor Quality, Convergance Problems. Stay Away
It looks sleek and isn't as deep as 21" monitors used to be...but poor convergence, fuzzy text and quality problems plague this monitor. If you read lots of the online reviews for the e540 you will find the most common complaint to be the convergence of the monitor. If you set all the red green and blue phosphors to be perfectly aligned in the center of the screen they were horribly misaligned on the corners, particularly on the left side. The result was text that was clear in the center of the screen but very blurry towards the left.Aiding to the problem was that there were 3 vertical convergence controls (top, middle, and bottom) but only 1 horizontal. It seems as if Sony purposely crippled the controls on the lower end monitor so you would be forced for a reason to buy their more expensive line.

About a week into getting the monitor it also started experiencing shaking problems that made it useless. Although it was infrequent, the problem did reappear every few days - even on a different computer (so I rule out a video card problem).

Another negative was the very thin video cable that I think would be prone to interference. Sony took far too many shortcuts on this model. Stay away. ... Read more
