4-0 out of 5 stars Fine TV set (and it's mine)
The quality has gone up and the prices are finally coming down on name-brand LCD television sets (unfortunately, this one has gone up 15% since the pre-order price offered by Amazon).Space considerations dictated a unit without the bulky back-side protruberance of a conventional CRT set, so I took a deep breath and pre-ordered this stylish and compact, newest Sony model, which is being pitched as a versatile monitor rather than a "dedicated" LCD TV set.

To begin with, the main advantage is the shallow case.If you have room for the old cathode ray model, hang on to it and save yourself a small fortune. That said, this Sony LCD unit performs better than conventional sets in some areas and is of at least equal quality in most others. Its superiority is most noticeable where numbers, titles, and animation are concerned--all are razor sharp beyond my expectations (can't see why anyone would invest the extra money needed to activate the "high-definition ready" feature).Human figures and flesh tones can be a bit more inconsistent than on a cathode ray tube.Occasionally, the contrast is excessive, regardless of how much I tweak the settings. On the other hand, when the signal source is a DVD player or VCR rather than cable TV, the images are crisp and consistent (so good, in fact, I noticed no appreciable improvement when I substituted for the composite cable first an S-Video, then a component video, cable).

The set is ready-to-go out of the box, and the remote has minimal but convenient buttons for instantly changing brightness, contrast, and picture size ratios. As for the stereo sound, complete with "sub-woofer" (apparently defined by Sony as a speaker larger than a silver dollar), I wouldn't make purchase contingent on that consideration. The audio is fine, as television sound goes, but I have yet to experience anything out of the ordinary.I tested it with a jazz CD.By boosting treble and bass to the max, I was able to coax from the set undistorted balanced sound with fairly alive cymbals and an audible bass while maintaining an adequately present mid-range.

Even when the power is off, the case is understated, trim, and elegant. Moreover, my cat can't jump on it and make it come crashing to the floor, which was the fate of this set's precariously balanced predecessor.

[Since I wrote the above, my wife has condemned the LCD image, claiming it lacks depth and warmth."Chancun a son gout," I say.At least I won't have to share the set with "Guiding Light."] ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars You are now warned!
Word of Warning. I purchased a BenQ projector and had it for a month before it started to fail and turn itself off.I sent it to BenQ for repair and have not recieved it back. That was over two months ago.I phone them every couple of days and get only lip service, they keep saying it is coming. So before you purchase a BenQ product think about the possibility of it getting repaired...or should I say never seeing it again.

You have been warned!

1-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful but flawed
Have been able to use mine for about 40 hours. After that it failed to respond to any input from any source. Contacted Benq and they said there was nothing they could do but send it in for repair since they have been having problems with these units. Sent it in and got it back. It worked once during a test preparation for a presentation but once again failed to acknowledge any input when turned on the next day during the actual presentation. Contacted Benq and they said I could have it repaired (wasn't repaired last time) or receive a refurbished unit (someone else's problem). So am working on my third round, maybe I'll be LUCKY this time. It will be my last Benq product. I can not recommend the product or company.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Projector
I've had this projector setup since Oct '04 and use it as a daily TV.I currently have it projected on to a blank wall, which works just fine.I have logged over 1000 hrs on the unit and it is still working great. It does not work well in a brightly lit room, but with only low watt accent lights it seems to be just fine.I have it setup with my computer and use a HDTV OTA card and the image blows me away.I use a DVD player on the s-video and it seems to run fine, although the only way to get the crisp HD is to use the XGA port. The only time I've really noticed anything on it and this is pretty small, but on a really dark movie and say there's a light post or car light driving by... if you look away at that point you'll see a rainbow tracer as you look away in the shape of that white light.Oh and Analog cable seems to be a little grainy and is really noticeable on cartoons like the Simpsons. But with High Def or digital cable you should be just fine.I would recomend if you can find one at a reasonable price to buy a ceiling mount.I just bought one and installed it last week and the native off-axis angle is set to be ceiling mounted so no need to keystone. The remote is a small credit card size with bubble buttons. The source button went out on me after 4 months, but there is a option in the menu to have auto-searching on the source so you don't have to change it manually. The PIP option is kind of cool with 9 different positionings for it and two different sizes small and medium. And on a 6' x 6' wall the small is hard to see.Lets see what else, oh the fan noise is very quiet. The spin up of the xbox DVD's are louder.I chose this one over the 6100 because of the native resolution.1024 x 768 (max 85hz) on the 6200 vs the 800x600 on the 6100.I have played Halo2, Halflife2, Rise of Nations, watched DVD's from Futurama - AVP, use it as a daily TV - hosting a great Superbowl party. This is a must have in my book.Hope this helped as a review...

3-0 out of 5 stars Good but Flawed
Rebate and recent flickering problems aside, this model is good for my DVD viewing. The projector works best with an additional component to RGB cable and a progressive scan DVD player.S-Video is too blurry for the 70-inch wide spread I'm using. After a year of use (~400 hours), it exhibited intermittent flickering in Cinema Mode and then began spreading to my other modes.BenQ quickly sent a refurbished replacement.

THE REBATE PROBLEM
I bought the projector at the end of March 2004 and promptly sent the rebate form to them within the week.In the week of August 16-20, 2004, I received a postcard that stated "Unfortunately, we could not honor your request because of the following reason: Unfortunately, the serial number you submitted is invalid or invalid due to special pricing."I contacted the online retailer where I bought the projector, and they promptly got me in touch with someone at BenQ.That person responded, and throughout the next two months, we exchanged a few e-mails.The BenQ official said that the lamps were backordered and there had been problems with their rebate handler.I received my free projector lamp the second week of November (8 months after my rebate had been sent).

THE FLICKERING PROBLEM
After a year of use (~400 hours), the projector had an intermittent flickering that worsened the longer it was left on.The flickering was noticeable at the top of the image as well as the top and bottom left areas. In layperson's terms, the flickering appeared as if someone was rapidly turning the brightness up and down in those spots on the screen.I troubleshooted the problem with the default blue screen display and discovered that switching from Cinema mode to Economy mode would make the problem disappear. When switching back to Cinema mode, the flickering would return after a few minutes. The problem then spread to Economy mode a few days later.I had the projector plugged into an APC surge and power filter throughout this process.

REMOTE CONTROL PROBLEM
Now, the power button on the remote control sometimes acts as if it has been pressed twice and turns the projector off without waiting for the second press confirmation.

REFURBISHED PROJECTOR CLARIFICATIONS
Contrary to the review published here, according to one BenQ official I e-mailed, *all* replacements are refurbished and the warranty for the refurbished replacement is only as long as the warranty for the original projector. The "hot swap" process involved BenQ mailing a Word document to me (accidentally including all their tracked changes to the document), my printing and filling out the form as well as including my credit card information, and faxing it back to them. The credit card information is required because BenQ charges $1795 (the MSRP) to your card until you return your original one. This process also required me to print out a mailing label from a Web site for the return box.Return postage was handled by BenQ.When I received the replacement projector, I noticed some differences from my original one.Although the box and packaging was sealed the same as my original projector packaging, the projector menu indicated that the bulb had been used for over 19 hours. The remote control also had some food and/or debris on it while the back of its casing had been pried open with a tool that left marks (even the protective plastic had been peeled off its face). The replacement projector also makes a noticeably louder high-pitched squeal when on than my original one, and I had to clean off several smudges and fingerprints from the front lens.So far, it is working good, but it's used and the warranty is less than my original.BenQ should have made this information available upfront for buyers and prospective buyers.

CUSTOMER SERVICE
BenQ's customer service was average to good. They lacked following up with e-mails that I sent requiring me to forward my previous messages and indicate how long it has been since the original (I waited one to four weeks between messages.)There is also a bit of a disconnect between support and their promotional materials. The Qxchange service (i.e., the hot swap process) was not defined on BenQ's Web site--I had to look at other sites (and this review) to determine what it meant.I then e-mailed the BenQ officials I had been in contact with and they cleared up the matter. When I called their returns department, the person I spoke to did not even know what the word "Qxchange" meant.BenQ's Web site uses an outdated and non-user friendly Web form to contact the company's departments. No carbon-copy is sent to a person filling out the form, so users have no record of when they submit a request.

1-0 out of 5 stars Short lamp life makes this an expensive "budget" projector
The picture from this projector is good for its price range, but the bulb failed after 300 hours. Other reviewers have experienced this, so it sounds like the lamp rarely lasts the advertised 2000 hours. At $350 for a replacement lamp, it makes this a poor choice for a budget projector. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Not a bad monitor at all!
When I first got this monitor I thought the quality was so-so especially when it came to the fonts. Image quality was pretty good but the fact that the fonts were fuzzy really kind of bothered me. I decided to download a utility for my video card that allowed me to make adjustments to gamma and screen resolution. After I made some adjustments to fonts in Windows display properties, I then set my screen resolution to 1280 x 1024 through the utility (not Windows). Once I did that the fonts now look perfect! My Windows screen resolution also says 1280 x 1024 but for some reason setting it through the utility made all the difference. I would suggest that anyone who buys this monitor download the latest driver and utilities for their particular video card and play with sreen resolutions, font sizes and font shadows to obtain the best possible looking fonts.

As for the speakers, well, if you don't already have some they will be adequate until you do. I had speakers already and while it would have been nice to remove them from the desk top, they stayed as the quality just isn't there for the built-in speakers.

We didn't attach the accessory holders on the sides of the monitor - looks too ugly IMHO. Glad they're not built-in.

One more thing - there is a utility included with the CD that allows you to rotate the screen image and then you can rotate the whole monitor screen to view everything in a portrait mode. I kind of liked it that way because you don't need to scroll as much but my wife disagreed. All a matter of preference.

Overall a very good monitor for the money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It is nice, not very expensive. Just buy it.I relied on other reviews & bought this & am very happy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Graceful, easy to install monitor. No (NOT 1) dead pixels.

Great price. DVI input. Pivots. Height adjusts. Free shipping.

10 minutes from UPS delivery to watching a DVD, and most of that time was spent removing it from the box.Placing it securely on the sturdy base was no problem. Then, I just plugged it in and was good to go.Ease of installation is extremely important to me, because I don't enjoy fiddling endlessly around with electronics to get everything up and running.I want it perfect out of the box, and it was!Plug and Play it promises and absolute Plug and Play it delivers.

This monitor gives a flawless, vividly colorful viewing experience with DVD presentations and, as the previous reviewer noted,it is equally clear and crisp with text. Only caveat: the sound quality of the speakers while adequate, does not deliver the strongest audio experience for my taste. However, I bought this monitor for its all-around superior visuals and not its audio capabilities. And since I was planning on using my own speakers anyway, it's not a problem.

If you're looking for a hassle-free, bargain-priced 19" lcd monitor that performs as well--or better--than the more expensive competition, buy this.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great budget 19" monitor
I have the version of this monitor that doesn't include the speakers, so I cannot comment on their quality.Otherwise, my monitor is identical to this one.

For a monitor in this price range, it really is excellent.Sharp picture, great color, and even very small fonts look crisp.

True, you can get better LCD monitors - but not in this price range. And unless you're doing CAD/CGI or similar, save your money and buy this instead of a high-end monitor. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not a bad monitor, but not the best either!
I bought this monitor because it was only a few bucks more than the 17" ultrasharp.Hey, it's 19" so I went for the bigger one!Well, this monitor is ok in clarity, not as crisp as I would like. Not a bad monitor if you don't use your pc for much more than internet.Text is not as clear as I would like.
The downfall is that they do not have flat panel speakers available for this "entry" level monitor.I don't like looking at the cluncky looking speakers next to the sleek monitor, so I've decided to exchange it for the ultrasharp monitor that has flat panel speakers available.

Also if you like to play games, you will want the higher model Ultrasharp. There are many complaints on the Dell chat boards about this model. E193FPIf you can't afford the 19" ultrasharp, then go for the 17" ultrasharp- but don't get this model because of the size!

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome monitor!
Out of the box, this monitor displayed fuzzy text and muddy colors. Then I found out that LCD monitors are *VERY* picky about resolution. Once I set WinXP graphics options to output at this LCD's native resolution (1280x1024), it was awesome. Crisp and clear text, and eye-popping color. My 5yr old CRT is no match for this beauty.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great monitor for the price!
This is a great LCD monitor for the price. The clarity is good, andit doesn't take up too much space on your desktop!

1-0 out of 5 stars The worst monitor.
Never even bother buying this monitor. If you don't beleive my words go look at dell forums on this model monitor. I am having hard time to get rid of this monitor for my self.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great LCD HDTV - doesn't deserve bad review
This LCD TV has a great picture - I don't see any evidence of light leakage.Curiously, the default settings for brightness is 70% and the contrast is 25% - I reversed these settings to have less brightness and more contrast. The picture was greatly improved.

I have not yet had digital cable or HDTV installed, but have connected analog cable and my DVD player to the set.The number of available connections is great - two TV tuners for easy PIP.The DVD playback was crisp and beautiful, through the component video connection.Even the analog TV looks decent from my seat on the couch.I have noticed that some cable channels seem to broadcast in higher quality than the local stations.I definitely think that the TV picture is better because of the larger coax cables that I have - better shielding.

The cables supplied are as follows:1 power cord (obviously), 1 RGB video cable, 1 PC audio cable, and 1 cheap coax cable (throw this one away).I don't understand why they even ship with these cables - I think that the majority of people would not even use them.Mine did not come with a composite video cable.

The remote is a little large, but is easy to hold in your hand.It has all the basic functions and works well from most angles and distances.

The PIP and POP (two screens next to each other) work well also, though I would like to be able to move the PIP around without with buttons on the remote (instead of going to the main menu).Previewing other channels is a snap (though drives my wife crazy).

The sound is acceptable, but a subwoofer would add to the depth. We previously had the DVD sound output to our stereo system, I may revert back to that method - but then I did not really expect the TV to have stereo-system quality sound.

The bottom line:We were replacing an old 27" CRT TV and set a budget for the purchase. This 30" fit our budget, has an image size that is larger than the old set, with an image quality that is truly great.

1-0 out of 5 stars Buyer beware! UNEVEN backlight problem (light leakage!)
I originally purchased the Viewsonic N3020W which turned out to have electronic swtich defects (the unit would not switch off with remote control); got another replacement one month later from the distributor with the same problem; then I was told the N3020W model had been discontinued and no more replacement available. Tech support was not helpful and kept procrastinating until almost 3 months after the orginal purchase, I was forced to take this Viewsonic N3000W as a substitue (No refund, beware!)

The problem with N3000W is having excessive light leakage (a manufacturing defect for LCD panel, search Google for details). When the display has no image, instead of total blackness on the display, this N3000W shows uneven blackness, the left half (45-50%) of the display is light in blackness (hazy black)and the right side is totally black. As a result, all displays on this LCD is always bright on the left and darker on the right side of the screen. This defect is markedly enhanced if you have dark scenes with even darkness on both sides (Try Alien Resurrection DVD and watch the the last few tunnel vision like scenes when Winona Ryder was commuicating with the computer before liftoff with the spacecraft. You will be surprised the left side is hazy black in color and the the right side is rich black.)

Again, I was given another N3000W replacement 3 weeks later (3 month after the original purchase) which has the same excessive light leakage except it is just a little bit better. Again No Refund from the US distributor.

While waiting for the replacement units, I was forced to purchase a Syntax model just before X'mas last year and found the Syntax model (around $1000) far better in display (practically no light leakage) than this Viewsonic N3000W model.

Practically, all the well-known brands have minimal light leakage

If you plan to purchase this Viewsonic N3000W unit, be sure you try above DVD for testing and make sure you can return the unit to the vendor for full refund. The US distributor would not give you any refund at all. Do not bother to return the unit to the US distributor in California. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for small area
I received my 20" Aquos yesterday.I was sceptical because I got such a great deal on it but was pleasantly surprised by the slim profile, modern look, and portability.I originally planned to put the unit on a reticulating bracked but I love the stand so much that I put it on a glass shelf instead. The picture is great but I would suggest using component video or s-video since the co-axial cable doesn't bring out the full potential of the LCD screen. The sound is slightly tinny but that's to be expected from such a small output.Overall, a great buy and I will definitely suggest this TV to anyone in the market for a smaller LCD display.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for the bedroom
If you are looking for something for the living room (i.e., as your main TV set), 20" just won't cut it.It's just too small for today's modern human eyes. For a typical living room, the minimum TV should be a 37" Panasonic plasma set.42" is another good choice, although for most people 50" would be an overkill.

This Sharp 20" NTSC TV is perfect for the bedroom. It takes up very little space on the nightstand, and it sports sharp and high-contrast image quality, making watching TV pleasant rather than eye-straining.This model is not widescreen, but that's ok for me because at 20", widescreen would have made images too small for me.This model is also not HDTV, but rather EDTV (extended definition), which it means it fully supports progressive-scan DVD playback.Hook this up to a progressive scan DVD player -- I have the super-compact CyberHome model I got at Radio Shack for $45 -- and you'll get some great-looking DVD movies in your bedroom.

As a secondary TV for your bedroom or kitchen or study, this Sharp delivers great quality and great value.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just bought one and am THRILLED!
I'm so thankful I didn't let the cryptic bad reviews of this product deter me from my instinct to purchase it.The picture is fabulous - the colors are incredible, the picture crisp. The sound is excellent.Plus all the other features (weight, portability etc) mentioned in other reviews. We have no problems with a noisy power box - and I was ready to hear something based on some previous comments. So perhaps Sharp has fixed that issue! We simply couldn't be more pleased - and the price can't be beat!

1-0 out of 5 stars Dont buy this!
You will regret buying this.its too overpriced and mine is lame.its fuzzy.

2-0 out of 5 stars mine's disappointing
I have the same tv in a slightly different size. The picture has a dark shadow down the middle. It's terribly annoying. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Check before you buy at a store.
I purchased this beautiful moniter to find it had a bright blue dead pixel near the center of the screen. $550 for a brand new state of the art LCD that looks tacky when displaying black. I installed it after Amazons 30 day return policy, so as with the person below , I'm stuck with a less than ideal moniter. Sad.

2-0 out of 5 stars Great View, but bad support
I was headed to Fry's to buy a different monitor when I saw this one and loved it. Great color, brilliant picture and a fast response time and not much more money. Unfortunately Fry's was out of stock, in fact all of CA Frys were out of stock. So I go online and order it and it arrives about 5 days later. Plug it in and thats when I realize its not as great as I saw in the store. First I upgrade new drivers for my top of the line video card and the monitor itself. But I soon come to realize it takes over 30 min sometimes over an hour for the monitor to finish warming up. During that time it flickers, shakes, and has lines running through it.I also have a bright dead pixel in the middle of the monitor. NEC won't exchange it unless it has 4-5 dead pixels so it looks like I am stuck with a monitor that takes an hour to warm-up and has a dead pixel, pretty sad for almost $600

5-0 out of 5 stars This LCD flat panel image has OUTSTANDING image quality!
I saw this LCD flat panel display at a local Fry's Electronics store and was blown away by the picture quality compared to other displays. The overall image is amazingly sharp, great contrast with really black blacks, details are retained in photos and flesh tones exceptional for digital image work. The only concern I had was the amount of glare on the screen in the store with the massive overhead lights. In my home environment where I can control the lighting, I don't have a problem with glare, but could see some folks objecting to this. For me however, the superb quality is absolutely worth the trade-off.I also really liked the thin frame, built in cable management, 4 port USB 2.0 hub, and height-adjustable support column.I had an older NEC 21" CRT that I thought I was going to miss when I converted to this 19" LCD, but the actual visible screen size is almost the same, and image quality so good that I plan on watching a whole lot more DVDs on my computer than I used to!All around an awesome display! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Forget about big screen T.V....this is better !
In a world of hype and deception, it is great to get a product that does what the ads say it will do. This projector is fantastic. I didn't have a screen when I first got my H30, so I used a wall for my screen, not even a white wall.....a pale blue one! Everyone commented how clear the picture was. My next-door neighbor has a big screen TV, and he said had he known about the quality of this projector he would have bought it instead. He has a 50 inchscreen, mine is over 8 feet, and can be much larger. The color is great, so is the definition. I finaly bought 6 old film projector screens from my local thrift shop. I "pieced" them together to makeone big screen. I made a silver colored framefor it. It looks great, and the picture is even better than before. My grandchildren say I have the biggest TV in the world. If you are thinking of buying a big screen TV, you should really consider this Home Theater Projector. You will be glad you did.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Dedicated Home Theater Projector!!
I received the Optoma H30 from Amazon a couple of days ago and I have to say this thing rocks! I thought the 800 x 600 res. would be a problem, but the image is beautiful! Even Hi-Def kicks (insert word here)! I have to admit that out of the box the picture isn't that great, but with some tweaking one can get the image to spectacular. The projector its self is well-built and seems sturdy and durable. The 6 seg color wheel makes for very accurate and vivid colors, including incredible blacks. Since the color wheel is 4x rainbows are hard to come by. The remote is great because it's average size which means even I can't lose it. The menu on this projector is great, it seems like you can tweak almost everything. I would reccomend this projector to a person who's on a budget, but non the less wants a great quality product.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent projector for the price!
The Optoma H30 is a compact, 4.6 lb. video projector that is a variation on the design of Optoma's EzPro 731 portable data projector. It uses the same basic chassis and connector panel as the 731. And like the 731, the H30 is limited to one VGA port for component/HDTV/data input. Meanwhile it duplicates the 731's VGA output for monitor loop through--a great feature for the education market, but not relevant for home theater. We would have preferred to see a component or DVI input instead of the VGA output. However this would no doubt have driven the price of the product up as well. Such are the trade-offs in using common design and parts for both commercial and home theater markets. The good news is that by using some of the same components, the unit cost to manufacture is lowered. Thus the consumer wins by getting a very low-priced DLP projector with a 6-segment, 4x color wheel.

By going to a 6-segment (RGB-RGB) color wheel, brightness is reduced (compared to the commercial design) since there is no white segment in the wheel. As is true with most digital video projectors, the 800 ANSI lumen rating is a best case scenario, and not relevant for optimum video use. After selecting the most advantageous settings for video, the real lumen output is closer to 450--not an unusual drop, percentagewise, from the theoretical rating.

The H30 is an SVGA, 800x600 resolution projector, which is native 4:3 aspect ratio. However you have the option to run the H30 as a native 16:9 projector in 800x450 as well, and set it up to fill a 16:9 screen. Set up this way, a 4:3 image can be centered in the middle of the 16:9 screen frame with black bars on either side. On the other hand, if you are using a 4:3 screen, you can opt to view 4:3 material in full 800x600 resolution. Accordingly, 16:9 material will be viewed with black bars at top and bottom. It should be noted that the first H30s to be shipped did not have all of this functionality. However, it is all available with the latest firmware upgrade. If you own an H30 with the early firmware release, you can get it upgraded at no charge (other than one-way shipping) by calling Optoma Customer Service at 1-888-289-6786.
Therefore you have more viewing format flexibility with this projector than you do with the so-called "cross-over" projectors in this price class that are used for both business and home entertainment. Optoma has for the most part designed this particular projector to address the needs of the home theater market exclusively.

SVGA resolution means you will have more visible pixelation than you would on a comparable XGA model. Pixelation on digital projectors, which is mostly visible in white text and subtitles, disappears as you move away from the screen. On the H30 it disappears at a viewing distance of about 1.9 times the screen width. If you are bothered by visible pixel structure in text, subtitles, and credits, and you plan to sit closer than 1.9 times the screen width, you may want to consider an XGA projector instead.

Out of the box, the color balance on our test unit was poor. Factory presets on red, green, and blue contrast and brightness, when defaulted to zero, yield an image heavily biased toward the green. However this can be corrected easily. In the advanced settings there are independent controls over brightness and contrast for red, green, and blue. On our test unit, we boosted red and blue contrast to +15, reduced green contrast to -8, raised red and blue brightness to +11 and reduced green brightness to -11. With these adjustments, the color balance on our H30 was beautiful. (These settings are quoted to give an indication of the direction and magnitude of correction required for our test unit; they are not meant to suggest that they are the optimum for every individual unit.)

Brightness uniformity is not a strong suit of the H30. We found brightness to fall off by as much as 40% from center to the corners. Viewing a 100 IRE white screen, the unevenness of the illumination is apparent without a meter. However once video subject matter is in play, the unevenness of illumination is not noticeable unless you intentionally look for it. In typical viewing one is not aware of the issue.

For DVD play, progressive scan input is preferred to interlace. Not only is a progressive scan image sharper, but it is also about 17% brighter which is an important factor on this unit.

Overall, after calibration adjustments the picture quality on the H30 is stunning, and certainly one of the best (if not THE best) you can find in this price range. Blacks are solid black, shadow detail is very good, color saturation is excellent. Furthermore, the 4x color wheel will substantially reduce or eliminate DLP rainbow artifacts for those sensitive to them (more on this below).

The Optoma H30 is a perfect solution for those who want optimum picture quality and who have a completely light controlled environment. If you go for a 90" diagonal picture (still much larger than big-screen TVs), the H30 will deliver extraordinary results. And at this size, pixelation becomes much less of an issue as well. Under these conditions, the H30 can produce outstanding picture quality. You can go larger if you wish, but we encourage users not to go too large. Overextending the image size will make pixelation more apparent and reduce contrast and color saturation. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Top notch monitor
I took this monitor out of the box, connected it to the computer and it has worked flawlessly from the beginning.I use AutoCAD software daily and this monitor has a very clear picture so I don't have to zoom in and out constantly.I've got the screen set to the maximum resolution and the only problem I see is when I select an item, the oblect selected shimmers, but that's a minor issue.

5-0 out of 5 stars Let me say one thing before I start… WOW!!
First Impressions of New Samsung 243t 24 Inch Widescreen Monitor

Let me say one thing before I start… WOW!!

Every LCD monitor that I had looked at before turned me off because none were as bright as my beloved Sony 19 inch CRT monitor.

The Samsung 243t, First Impressions …

 Screen brightness… WOW… very bright, more so then my Sony 19 inch CRT.
 Fonts… very bright and VERY sharp; crystal clear to be exact. No compromise here.
 Viewing angle… much better then I imagined for an LCD, can view it from all normal angles.Yes, there is some fall-off at very wide angles but even here it is much less then I thought there would be.
 Swiveling the monitor on the base stand… Forward, Back, Tilt way back, Raise the whole monitor up and down, Rotate 90 degrees for portrait mode; it does it all thanks to the new detachable VESA compliant universal base. What a wonderful design.
 Bad pixels… At first I could find none, but after a couple of days of looking at different colored screens I finally found one… a red one that was turned on, directly under the Win XP Start button so it is not an issue at all as it is completely invisible with Windows running.
 Does it handle TV correctly? You bet!Using MC’s Aspect Ratio called “Crop” (not “Crop Edges”) all TV is viewed full screen and full width without any stretching or distortion at all.Crop automatically blows up standard 4:3 aspect ratio so there are no black borders on the sides and it removes the top and bottom black borders on letterbox or HDTV images.
 Response time… this is where most LCD monitors fall down with fast moving objects such as games. The Samsung does pretty well here. In fact, PC Game web site tested it and declared this monitor to be the perfect game monitor. They said you have not really played a game until you do it on a large, widescreen monitor. One of the fastest LCD monitors available is the NEC 2180UX 21 inch (4:3 aspect ratio), it has a response time of just 20 milliseconds. The Samsung 24 inch widescreen is only 25 milliseconds, pretty impressive for a 24 inch widescreen with 1200 x 1920 pixels.

In addition to the widescreen, what really impressed me right out of the box is the brightness and crystal clear, tack sharp image.I did not know that LCD’s have gotten this good.I have heard that in the last year or so there have been big improvements in LCD monitors.

I am getting fantastic image quality using only analog (ATI A-I-W 9600 Pro video card).I have heard that it is even better when connected digital (video card has to have digital output, not all do).

I was looking at three different big-screen monitors… NEC 2180UX 21.3 inch, standard aspect ratio, Sony PremierPro 23 inch windscreen, and the Samsung 243t 24 inch widescreen. All are great monitors.

 Although the NEC is a wonderful monitor, it is not wide screen and I really wanted that.
 The Sony has been out for over a year and is starting to show its age a little (only 40 milliseconds response time and only 350:1 contrast ratio). Also, the Sony seems to be having a quality control problem with a lot of bad pixels. Some users have reported as many as 15 bad pixels on the Sony.
 The Samsung is brand new with the latest technology (25 milliseconds response time, 500:1 contrast ratio) and that fantastic universal base).

I read a report where a guy found the Sony and the Samsung in a store, side-by-side.He played with the controls for over an hour on both monitors. He bought the Samsung as no matter how hard he tried he could not make the Sony look as bright as the Samsung.

As I write this (in Word) I am using the monitor swiveled 90 degrees for portrait mode.I can see 1 and ½ full pages; how simply wonderful.

The Samsung 243t Widescreen, after a week or two of getting some real world use...

Now that I’ve had a couple of weeks to get used to the Samsung Widescreen, I have noticed some real world differences between LCD’s and CRT’s.Some things that I used to take for granted are no longer an issue or are vastly improved over CRT monitors; such as…

• My fears about switching to a widescreen for my computer monitor were totally unfounded…

o MC and all other software expands nicely to fit the new format with a LOT more room for everything.
o My concerns about TV on a widescreen monitor was a non-issue; the black borders I was concerned about on the sides of a standard 4:3 TV image are very clean with no artifacts.
o The black borders on the sides of a standard 4:3 TV image can be totally removed with MC TV’s Aspect - ‘Crop” command (not the Crop edges option). It does not stretch the image as ATI’s Aspect controls do (causing distortion of the image), but rather it ‘zooms’ the image so the side borders go off the screen. This does make some of the top and bottom of the image go off the screen but is a very good compromise until real widescreen comes to all households in a year or two.
o One thing that did came as a surprise to me was that letterbox images do not automatically fill the screen but have black borders all around… top, bottom, left and right.I had just assumed that letterbox TV images would automatically fill the screen; but after seeing a letterbox image on my widescreen monitor I saw what was happening. The TV station was sending out a standard 4:3 aspect ratio TV signal which included a letterbox movie within it so it was on the screen as a 4:3 image.MC’s TV’s Aspect - ‘Crop” command did the trick and expanded it to full screen thereby filling the whole screen with a non-distorted widescreen image.
o Even with MC’s TV’s Aspect - ‘Crop” command, some real widescreen images that TV stations transmit will still leave a very thin black border along the top and bottom of the screen; that is because most letterbox images are 16:9 aspect but for some reason all widescreen computer monitors are 16:10 aspect ratio hence the thin black borders left over. This is something that MC needs to address.
• Much faster turn on after a Win XP standby start up.
• The screen does not come on faint at boot up (like CRT’s) but seems to come on at normal color; in other words there is no ‘warm up’ time required.
• The image does not shift in size as the screen warms up like a CRT does.
• There is no need for ‘tweaking’ the screen size and position settings as it is done automatically by use of the ‘Auto’ button which works extremely well indeed.
• A full screen image with a thin line running all the way around it (a border) will be precisely positioned and well centered on the screen with the thin border just inside the screen bezel; it will be straight and precise. No matter how hard I tried, I could never achieve that for very long on any CRT monitor. On a CRT, even when I could precisely position such an image on the screen some of the thin border would always bow out of the image and hide behind the bezel as the line was not really true and straight due to the CRT gun scanning in an arc and the different thickness of the glass tube surface.
• As there is no more screen behind the bezel (like CRT’s) the screen size is precise and very well known so the video card only has to provide the exact number of pixels that the screen needs. So, when you set up the screen size in Windows to 1200x1920 the video card produces that exact amount of pixels and the LCD reads that exact size (1200x1920).This is why the ’Auto’ feature works so well.
• There is absolutely no pincushion, barrel, trapezoid, non-linearity, or any other kind of distortion that needs to be adjusted. This is because there is no ‘gun’ (as in a CRT) scanning in an arc that needs to be controlled and adjusted.Furthermore, these controls are not needed and are not present which greatly simplifies the setting up of a LCD monitor.
• Brightness… I was very pleasantly surprised in this area as I had always thought that LCD’s were dimmer then a bright CRT.A lot of things have been improved in LCD design in the last year or so.This LCD is actually much brighter, and with better contrast then any CRT that I have used.
• The screen does not ‘wash out’ as brightness and/or contrast are turned up as most CRT’s do.There seems to be much better control over the contrast then on a CRT.
• Contrast ration is very good (500:1).
• Due to the high contrast ratio, blacks are really black; in fact when the screen is turned off it appears to be almost totally black and not the dark grey of most CRT’s.I think this may be because there is no shadow mask screen or thick glass for the light to travel through and become weakened. There is only a thin black plastic screen between the LCD’s and you.
• Much thinner bezel surrounding the screen as there is no screen area behind the bezel that has to be covered as there is in all CRT’s monitors.
• The only negative side to LCD’s has to do with the backlighting…
o CRT’s are notorious for having ’spotty’ brightness especially on a full screen of a bright color such as white; this is due to many reasons including the gun scanning in an arc, the electron beam striking the shadow mask at more of an angle near the edges, and the different thickness of the surface of the glass CRT tube all leading to light fall off near the corners and edges.
o I thought that would be a thing of the past with a LCD as there is no electron gun, no shadow mask, and no scanning in an arc; but there are back lights and no matter how hard the manufacturers have tried there will always be some slightly lighter and darker areas of the screen as current back light technology simply is not as uniform as one would hope for. What you see on an LCD monitor is a slight ‘shimmering’ of light as you move your heard at different angles to the screen. Some of this is due to backlighting fall off over the screen surface.
o There is hope for the future in a new type of backlighting using not fluorescent as the light source, but an array of LED’s (Light Emitting Diodes).LED backlighting on an LCD monitor may be about a year away but the test that I have seen looks very promising so far.Such a monitor is brighter, has better contrast, and much more saturated colors, the overall effect is very positive. The nice thing about LED backlighting is that current assemble lines can use it on new LCD monitors at very little additional manufacturing assembly cost (the actual LED backlighting may be more expensive).
• All in all, most of my fears about LCD’s have been put to rest; needless to say, I’m one happy camper.

1-0 out of 5 stars Mediocre performer and way over-priced
Not only is this an average performer but it's way over-priced.Monitors from HP and Sceptre have better image quality as well as cost a lot less.

5-0 out of 5 stars Samsung SyncMaster 243T 24" LCD Monitor
I recently purchased this 24" widescreen LCD monitor for my Dell Dimension 8250 desktop computer. I use an ATI Radeon 9800 PRO 256 for a graphic card. I've had this Samsung monitor for 2 weeks now ... WOW is the first description I give it! I compared it to the Sony PremierPro SDM-P232W/B 23" LCD monitor. They both are excellent LCD monitors, but I preferred the Samsung simply because it has a much brighter display and higher contrast ratio. The clarity is incredible too! I believe it would be a challenge to find a better widescreen LCD monitor for the same investment! This is a great monitor for professional graphics, CAD, and other demanding applications which is how I use it. If you are a gamer you will absolutely love it too!. You cannot go wrong with this purchase especially since I believe you get more for you money with Samsung products. I have a Samsung 32" Widescreen HDTV that I've had for more than 2 years which I absolutely love as well! This LCD offers a 1,920 x 1,200 maximum resolution in both DVI and analog, 16.7 million colors, and 0.27 x 0.27 mm dot pitch, onscreen images are crisp and accurate, while 270 cd/m2 of brightness and a 500:1 contrast ratio, this is a brighter monitor than the Sony I compared it to. The onscreen menus allow you to adjust a number of monitor settings, including brightness, contrast, H/V position, color temperature, and much more. I rate this Samsung widescreen LCD monitor highly to anyone wanting an excellent display! If I could I'd give it a higher star rating! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Where'd digital go???
Nice clarity, even with analog.Purchased in March and it got funky at the end of April, now in mid-May the digital circuitry is completely nonfunctional.Switched to analog and so far so good, not holding my breath. They have a good no bad pixels policy, though there is one that is 50% bad.Would like to reclaim temporary lack of sanity that compelled me to purchase this POS.Manual controls SUCK BIG TIME, hard to feel them under display frame and hard to use - they take a strong push and have a small bump size. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Good LCD, good price!
In the beginning I too was surprised by the fuzziness, colors, etc... but after dealing with adjusting all kinds of settings, and reading the reviews I narrowed the problem down to the video card, the old VGA only video card just won't do it, it's like having an elder driver trying to drive a brand new Ferrari, if you haven't gone digital (DVI) yet, do it! Just wish I had waited for the new Samsung SyncMaster 910t 19" LCD Monitor Silver (www.ipkonfig.com/cms/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=164&Itemid=29&limit=1&limitstart=0), although next time I may go for a new xtreme formac 19" LCD (http://www.formac.us/p_bin/?cid=solutions_displays_gallery1900_011) for my gaming PC

5-0 out of 5 stars Great monitor and a great buy
We shopped thoroughly online and at Best Buy, Circuit City (how do they stay in business?), etc. before buying two of these monitors to replace CRT dinosaurs. Couldn't be happier. Love the pivot capability -- mine's pivoted for good -- enabling me to see entire Word documents at once and whole web pages without scrolling. Great color and clarity, comparable to the higher resolution 21" screens that cost twice as much.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Nice, Good Price
I use this with Windows XP at the native resolution and it is quite sharp and bright with good color. In my opinion Samsung's choice of 1280x1024 resolution is the best for this size monitor.XP
has difficulties rendering readable fonts at higher resolutions, and 1280x1024 allows for legibility without the problem of microscopic font sizes. The pivot feature is pretty slick, and would be useful for editing word docs in page layout format.

3-0 out of 5 stars resolution is too low for this size display!
I bought this monitor for my girlfriend and the first thing she tried to do was to increase the resolution.I couldn't blame her because 1280 x 1024 on a 19" LCD is just not small enough. It's like being on 800x600 on what you are used to on a CRT.My recommendation is that 1600x1200 is MINIMUM on a 19"!!!!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fuzzy Text?CHECK NATIVE RESOLUTION!
This applies to all LCD monitors regardless of analog or digital inputs.

I've talked to to many people who have complained about the fuzziness of their monitors, and it was all because they did not have it set to the native resolution.

All LCD monitors have a Native Resolution. This means every pixel generated by the computer is represented by a pixel on the monitor. If you don't have it set to the native resolution, the text will ALWAYS be fuzzy.

This monitor supports a native resolution of 1280 x 1024.Make sure you have your video card, display/monitor control panel set to this before making any adjustments.

If the option is not available, you may need to upgrade your video card, drivers.... or computer!

As for this particular monitor and brand, samsung is leading the way in LCD technology, their LCD TVs will soon be the standard, especially if Sony continues to use older style LCD technology. ... Read more
