Amazon.com Review Don't think of the airpanel as a computer; it's a wireless accessory for your existing PC that you can write on and that provides access to all your files, applications, and settings. The design is chunky but easy to hold, with rounded corners and a clear, bright screen. Two USB ports on the top accept a mouse and keyboard, but since the airpanel is a touch screen, you probably won't need them. In our tests of the airpanel, we found that the stylus was small but had a nice balance. The four-way cursor control was a little slow, but at least we didn't jostle the cursor accidentally; and the left and right mouse buttons were useful with the pen too. For text entry, we typed and wrote into an input panel. We tapped and dragged onscreen to control Windows itself; in fact, we could see our PC's desktop on the airpanel as if we were sitting in front of the PC screen, but without desktop wallpaper. The 10.4-inch screen looked small initially, but when we held it in our hands or rested it on our lap, it didn't feel cramped; and it was small and light enough to carry easily from room to room. Without the usual PC components like a hard drive, CD-ROM, and so on, the Airpanel didn't get too warm to hold either. Overall, the airpanel V110 is pricier than a normal PC monitor, but being untied from a desk is a great benefit. Mary Branscombe, Amazon.co.uk Features Reviews (11)
I don't know why the marketing (that I've seen) for this product is just the home market. Yes, I realize it works with Windows XP Pro which can be connected to using remote desktop connection, and there's a free upgrade CD for XP Home users. It seems I could use it in a business environment, such as a warehouse, and connect to a Windows 2003 Server running terminal services, and attach a (USB) barcode reader--preferably the wand/pen type, or an RFID reader, to it to do physical inventory tracking? Ok, I realize 2003 Server is not quite out yet (I have RC2). But wouldn't that be a good application for it? The inventory data displayed is always up-to-date, and there's no need to sync up to upload or download data. I think it would be a "killer" application for smart displays. My main reason for writing this comment is to ask that question, but I do have a comment. I've looked at the V110 and V150 displays at CompUSA. They're not hooked up to any Windows XP Pro computer. So the ViewSonic demo kind of falls short if you're trying to figure out how they work or how well they work. I took my laptop which has 2003 Server on it to CompUSA, but those displays are not actually Smart Displays. They're fake displays running a little floor show. Bob. ... Read more | |

Dear NEC-MITSUBISHI Engineering, I'm writing you after I spoke with your customer support representatives over the phone, and they recommend me to write you about the issue which I'm going to describe here, because I believe it's a manufacturing defect in all DP2070SB-BK models manufactured in January and February 2004. So far I have tested two brand new units. The first one I purchased from Amazon.com and it was manufactured in January 2004 (serial # 41101003YA). It had an incurable geometric distortion problem, and therefore I replaced it with another brand new unit from Amazon.com that was manufactured in February 2004 (serial # 42101534YA). The second unit suffers from exactly the same incurable geometric defect. I have tested the units on different computers that have different video cards manufactured by different companies. The first computer has an NVIDIA Quadro 2 EX chipset and the second one has an NVIDIA GeForce Ultra FX 5700 chipset. I have moved the monitors to different locations, rotated them in all directions relative to the Earth's magnetic field, tried different power outlets, turned off all electrical equipment and lighting, tried different data cables with different thicknesses and qualities, in addition to the cables that come bundled with the units. All of these didn't eliminate the geometric defect. Also note that I have tried two different DP2060u models on the same computers (the predecessors of the DP2070SB) and both of them don't have the geometric defect of the DP2070SB-BK. I believe this eliminates the possibility that the defect is connected to my equipment or location. Basically, both of the DP2070SB-BK units bend the center of horizontal lines downward in the upper half of the screen (the horizontal band around 2.5" to the top and 2.5" to the bottom of the upper aperture grill wire). Horizontal lines curve in the center downward in a flattened U-shape pattern, so if you have a horizontal line in the mentioned band area that extends from the far left to the far right of the screen, and hold a straight ruler against the screen that meets this line at the far left and the far right, you will clearly notice that the horizontal line curves downward in the center, and its distance from the bottom of the ruler at the center (actually about 0.5" to the right the center) is about 2.5 to 3.0 mm. You can also clearly see the curvature if you do the following. 1) Open a window and extend its right and left borders all the way to the left and right of the screen. 2) Open Notepad with a blank white document and maximize it, so that you can clearly see the upper aperture grill wire. 3) Bring the first window to the foreground, so that it's visible against Notepad's white background. 4) Align the top border of the window with the far left and far right of the upper aperture grill wire. 5) You will clearly see that the window border dips in the center about 2.5 to 3.0 mm below the wire. This test obviously assumes that the aperture wire is perfectly straight, but as I mentioned above, you will also see the same defect if you placed a straight ruler against the screen. Note that this curvature doesn't happen at the very top of the screen or its lower half. Only in the band around the upper aperture grill wire. The defect is visible and very annoying to any discriminate graphics or CAD professional. In fact, I can't tolerate it at all! I have tried every geometric adjustment using both the front buttons and NaviSet. I reset the geometry to the factory default at all applicable resolutions and refresh rates and used the "Auto" function on the recommended resolution and refresh rate (1600x1200@85Hz). Also note that the factory reset brings up an image that is rotated counter-clockwise on both units. This defect seems to be some kind of vertical pincushion pattern (push on the top), and the geometric controls can only adjust horizontal pincushion patterns (push on the sides). The two units will be returned to you soon from Amazon.com, but I'm sure that all the DP2070SB-BK units manufactured during January and February 2004 (or may be before or after) have the same defect. ... Comparing models side-by-side in the store, I found that despite the f1903's reported contrast ratio of only 500:1, I found it consistently as bright if not brighter than others with higher reported contrast ratios.(I was sure to check all the brightness/contrast settings.)So I wonder what that number really means. The lesson here is to look at the screen for yourself. The highest praise goes to the very adjustable base and stand. It will tilt and swivel and even raise up and down to find your comfortable viewing angle.I was surprised to find that the height adjustment actually acts like a spring tensioned to the weight of the monitor, so it only takes a simple lift or press of the frame to raise and lower it. It ships with the brightness set to 100% and the contrast at only 50%, but actually that looks perfect for a dim environment.Raising the contrast to 75% will sufficiently blast your retinas, but beyond that I notice some color distortions at the bright end. It also ships set to a color temperature of 6500K (warm/yellow), and also offers 9300K (cool/blue), but I found that a custom setting of RGB(50,50,55) looks best to me. The on-screen control interface is very attractive, but still functional.Unlike some other models I tried, it doesn't take 2 minutes to adjust a value from 0 to 100%.It could benefit from some presets or memory settings though, so one could quickly adjust for viewing in bright areas, dark areas, movie viewing, etc.It offers a slick opacity setting that you can adjust to your liking, and you can also move the control area around the screen.I moved mine to the lower right corner so it's above the buttons on the bezel, which makes sense to me. My model shows one stuck pixel that comes and goes. Not bad when the HP specs allow for up to 7 flaws. And this one's not even noticable except on a black screen. The viewing angle is reported at 170 degrees horizontal, but that's hardly an exact property to be measured.I actually find that when I move more than 30 degrees off center, the image turns slightly yellow like an old newspaper and gets dimmer as the angle increases.I don't see any sort of cut-off around 170 degrees though. Pixel response would have to be my biggest disappointment, but I should point out that I'm picky. When scrolling black text in a browser, it can turn slightly purple or blue.Certain color combinations are particular bad though, and I discovered this while playing Yahoo! Pool.A red or pink ball moving across a green background leaves a very noticeable trail.Upon seeing this, I tried viewing a DVD, and found that certain high-speed action such as the running of a horse's legs will get blurred and possibly change color. But I realize that LCD technology has yet to match the performance of a traditional CRT, and given that, this monitor doesn't do bad at all.I've seen much worse on laptop screens. I also noticed that this particular LCD acts a little different than most when touched.Specifically, it leaves not just a dot where my finger pressed, but a dot with an X through it.This is neither good nor bad, but I just found it interesting.I'm curious what technology is at work behind that behavior. I should note that I'm using the DVI connection and supplied DVI-D cable.(The box doesn't indicate that any DVI cable is included, but mine had one, so don't do like I did and buy one extra then have to return it.)However for analog connections, there are some very simple calibration tools to give you the best possible picture. And the "auto" button on the bezel is only for analog connections.(I tried to use the calibration and the auto button before I realized it wasn't necessary for digital connections.) Overall I'm very satisfied, but it loses a star for the viewing angle and pixel response.
For the price (get it at discount), you can't beat this HP F1903.Not only does it look good, it is sharp, relatively bright, just large enough to wow you and its stand will elevate off your desk almost 8 inches. Why does this matter? You will no longer scrunch your back while you potatosurf the internet. The default settings were already at 100% brightness, but the contrast seemed low.Boosting contrast slightly made reading a lot easier and increased sharpness slightly. If you increase contrast too much, the colors change (like from grey to yellowgrey). I have a TV tuner card in my desktop and having a 19 inch TV on your desktop will instantly save you couch time for that casual channel surfing when you're bored. The colors are not as saturated as the Samsung 19 inch that my friend has, but are more realistic.Skin does look smooth on this monitor, not red or orange.Which brings me to this: Download the most current drivers on the HP website for an accurate color profile. The package weighs 26 pounds and this is mostly due to the heavy base. All is forgiven when you slide this monitor up higher off your desk.Your posture will thank you for sure. I paid slightly more than a 17 inch monitor and got a great 19 inch LCD which looks modern and gives me larger viewing (at 1280x1024, everything looks better bigger vs. a 17inch monitor). The silver bezel looks nice against a light colored wall- it is not as imposing as an all black monitor.HP has some high quality touches like a backlit power button, a very good antiglare coating, and a very solid (almost heavy) base.It comes fully assembled and with a pair of basic Harmon Kardon speakers (I have not used yet). ...
