Amazon.com Review

If you're tired of having too many windows crammed into a tiny display, take heart, for the Princeton EO2010 is just the monitor to solve your problems. At a grand 21 inches, this behemoth offers plenty of display space and is capable of running at a monstrously high resolution of 1,920 x 1,600 at 75 Hz. The EO2010 should please not only the average computer user but also high-end graphics users. With a superfine 0.25-millimeter dot pitch and rock-solid refresh rates, the EO2010 also includes BNC connectors for supreme connection quality.

Though the footprint is long, it's one of the narrowest ones we've ever seen, sure to shoehorn onto cramped desktops. Colors are brilliant, the picture is crystal clear, and fonts are readable down to a tiny 6.8-dot pitch. Coupled with amazingly high refresh rates, the Princeton EO2010 will reduce the strain of spending long hours in front of your computer. On the downside, we did experience some color misconvergence near the edges of the screen that couldn't be corrected through the onscreen display. Also, the screen is a little more bulbous than most 21-inch monitors, which distorts the screen geometry somewhat. Fortunately, the onscreen controls let you adjust a host of monitor options, including vertical/horizontal moiré, convergence, and the rotation of the screen. Calibration controls are easy to navigate and quick to respond, making setting up and maintaining your display a snap.

When all is said and done, there's not much to complain about. The Princeton EO2010 is a monitor sure to satisfy desktop publishers, Internet freaks, and multimedia wizards alike. --Dan Simpson

2-0 out of 5 stars Beware Product warranty
personally installed five of the E090/E0900 monitors. Over the course of time three of them failed within the warranty period. Of the three, one has yet to be returned. Why is this important? It has been ten months and all correspondence and calls have been ignored. I have talked to regional managers and customer service reps. They are (apparently) refusing to honor their warranty. I, as a dealer, had to replace this monitor for a customer out of pocket. I can't believe I am the only one this has happend to. Therefore, anyone who purchases any Princeton monitor should be aware that their warranty policy is questionable. if the monitor fails, you may have to buy (presumably a different more reliable brand) on your own. I have dropped the line entirely.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Balance of Quality and Price
I bought one of these a month ago to replace a Princeton 17" I have had for a long time.My 17" was so reliable and the quality was great, so I decided to stay with the brand.

It was a good decision tomake. The Princeton 21" monitor actually takes up less deskspace thanmy 17" did, and the quality is excellent, especially for many of thenewer games that take advantage of the 3d graphics cards. The color depthand dot pitch provide an excellent viewing experience. The quality isprobably more evident when playing DVD's, however.

Monitors are not thekind of thing you want to buy a new one of every year or two.You want onethat will last a long time, and provide great quality. My Princeton17" is 6 years old and still is one of the best monitors I have used, and I have no doubts this 21" one will show itself to have just aslong a life. The quality difference is amazing, especially adding the4" of additional viewing space. Also, the monitor seems to run quitea bit cooler than my 17" did, which in my small office is a realfactor.

If you have the money to make a new monitor purchase, theViewsonic 21" is the one to consider.Sure you can get cheaper21" monitors, but for something that you will be looking at so muchover the next 6 or more years, do you really want to risk it, or skimp andget something you end up not being happy with?

This is one purchase Ihave been very happy with.4 Stars, and the only reason it isn't 5 isbecause it isn't a flat screen. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

Ideal for a wide variety of high-end applications, Sony's CPD-E540 is a large 21-inch CRT (19.8 inches viewable) that delivers both quality and reliability. With its Digital Multiscan technology, a maximum resolution of 1,920 x 1,440 (1,600 x 1,200 @ 85 Hz recommended), virtually flat screen, and fine 0.24 mm dot pitch, the E540 provides clean, accurate images. Additionally, Sony's HiDensity Electron Gun with Accurate Image Restoration technology ensures that the entire screen (even the corners) is accurately focused. An anti-reflective, high-contrast AR screen coating also cuts down on glare and eyestrain.

Weighing a hefty 67 pounds, the E540 has a reasonably small footprint (given the large display area) of 19.7 by 19.0 inches. It connects to both Mac and PC systems via a 15-pin captive pigtail D-sub connector. An adjustable tilt and swivel base makes getting the perfect viewing angle easy, while Active Signal Correction technology provides one-touch adjustment of image size and placement.

Plug-and-play ready, the E540 is a snap to set up, while a number of onscreen controls, such as brightness, contrast, H/V position, and zoom, make adjusting the display to your taste and surroundings quick and easy. The E540 also comes backed with a three-year manufacturer's warranty on parts and labor. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very crisp image quality.
Very crisp image quality. Kind of expensive but it is worth it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Cheap but very poor quality
This monitor, well, it sucks. It was a waste of the $600 I spent. The biggest problem is that it's very blurry above 1600x1200 making those modes almost useless (on XP). Attached to my PowerBook it can't handle rates greater than 60Hz above 1600x1200 and it so blurry even at lower resolutions it's unusable.

Second major complaint is the display is flat and lifeless. Colors are washed out and contrast is poor. Forget calibrating it for anything, you are lucky to just have it look decent.

It's a very poor quality 19" display in a 70 pound 21" box. Unless you want a monitor that's big because you have eyesight problems then this isn't the monitor for you.

Would I buy one again? Hell no.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Monitor!
I was hesitant getting this monitor because although I knew I wanted a 21" screen, I was afraid it would be too massive to fit on my desk (a corner unit).I was also torn between this and the comparable aperture-grill NEC FE2111 which appears to be used by a large number of top gaming PC manufacturers (Alienware, Falcon, etc.).

I've always wanted a Sony and kicked myself last time (6 years ago) I bought a non-aperture grill monitor, so I thought I'd never forgive myself if the NEC FE2111 turned out to be a dud, so I took the plunge.

As I brought the massive box into the house, I was kicking myself--what was I thinking that this huge monitor would fit?

But once I got the monitor on the desk, it fit much more nicely than I ever imagined. The back of the monitor is much more narrow than I ever imagined, allowing the monitor to sit way back into the corner of room--about the same depth as my old 17" monitor.

Wow!I love the image quality too.Bright, clean, crisp.I've only had it for 2 days, but so far I love it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Monitor For Internet, and Gaming
I am 15, and i use my pc alot.I used to have a 16' Sony Flat Screen Monitor, but i needed a bigger one for gaming and using the internet. This monitor helped tremendously, and the display is crisp, clear, and refresh rates are FAST! For Example, right now im using 1600 x 1200 and the refresh rate is 85 Hertz. If you use this Monitor, i recommend using 1600 x 1200 because it looks the best, although the monitor can display incredibly higher resolutions. I highly recomend this monitor for someone who wants a BIG monitor, a perfectly flat screen, but wants to avoid the unbearably high prices of LCD monitors the same size.

1-0 out of 5 stars Poor Quality, Convergance Problems. Stay Away
It looks sleek and isn't as deep as 21" monitors used to be...but poor convergence, fuzzy text and quality problems plague this monitor. If you read lots of the online reviews for the e540 you will find the most common complaint to be the convergence of the monitor. If you set all the red green and blue phosphors to be perfectly aligned in the center of the screen they were horribly misaligned on the corners, particularly on the left side. The result was text that was clear in the center of the screen but very blurry towards the left.Aiding to the problem was that there were 3 vertical convergence controls (top, middle, and bottom) but only 1 horizontal. It seems as if Sony purposely crippled the controls on the lower end monitor so you would be forced for a reason to buy their more expensive line.

About a week into getting the monitor it also started experiencing shaking problems that made it useless. Although it was infrequent, the problem did reappear every few days - even on a different computer (so I rule out a video card problem).

Another negative was the very thin video cable that I think would be prone to interference. Sony took far too many shortcuts on this model. Stay away. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Bright, large display!
I initially read the PC WORLD review of the Viewsonic P225f in making my decision about purchasing this brand. I then read reviews and found that some descriptions of the P220f and P225f were the same. It appears that the P225f reviewed in PC WORLD June 2002 has a .25 pitch center focus and .27 pitch on the sides. But the newer P225f is .24 pitch throughout. It appears that the PC WORLD review is closer to the P220f which I recently bought. This has the .24/.27 pitch sizes.

That said, a number of reviewers commented that the Viewsonic seems great on graphics (which it is) and only mediocre on text. When I brought this monitor home, I was initially disappointed. I run at 1024 x 768. Much of my work is text only. Text on the edges seemed a little fuzzy and the text below Window's icons was not very clear. I was considering returning the monitor when I began playing with the menus and found that the factory default for contrast is 100%. Once I turned this down to the lower 90s, the text quality improved dramatically. Now I am very impressed with the monitor. When I looked at the Sony 540, which is in the same price range, the colors looked faded. Not so for the Viewsonic. This is a vibrant monitor. It also has a lot of controls, including focus, which the Sony 540 lacks.

For those reviewers concerned by the aperture grill lines, you obviously have only had shadow mask monitors in the past. My last monitor was a Dell 21 inch shadow mask. These are perhaps a little bit better on text, but they lag behind in graphics and color display. ALL aperture grill monitors have faint lines. You can't blame Viewsonic for this anymore than Sony or others using this higher end construction. The lines are really a moot point if you want the better color display that aperture grill affords.

I recommend this monitor for those wanting a large 22" screen without paying the $800 - $1000 for the P225f.

1-0 out of 5 stars Poor quality monitor - inconsistent distortion
My first P225f monitor arrived with dust particles behind the flat glass panel. It took a week of effort to get it replaced by ViewSonic (they wanted me to pay for shipping). The replacement monitor arrived with a clean screen, but has image distortion on the right-side.No adjustments, repositioning or change of computers will allow the right-side of the screen to be focused as sharply as the left side. Also, the image curls up at the bottom corners, which the purity control won't eliminate completely. This monitor is a major disappointment. It is not good quality.

5-0 out of 5 stars the lines are normal
Viewsonic is absolutely correct in stating that the lines are necessary parts of the aperture grill. Every monitor with this type of technology (which is an excellent technology, by the way) has these lines, including my Mitsubishi Diamond Pro 1000. They are nothing to worry about, and you will not notice them.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Thin Lines"
I do not have this particular monitor, but I have a similar monitor that also has the thin lines across the screen. They are annoying at first, but I noticed that after using it for about a week, I got used to the lines, and did not notice them any more. While they are still visible if I LOOK for them, I just don't pay any attention to them anymore. This is NOT a problem with the ViewSonic, it is the same with ANY of the "flat" CRTs. All of them are based on the Sony Trinitron tube, and there are two kinds of this, the Trinitron, which is flat top to bottom, and the FD Trinitron, which is almost totally flat. Any Trinitron or "Flat" CRT will have these horizontal lines. Do not let this affect your purchase. You will get used to it after a week.

1-0 out of 5 stars ViewSonic P220f 22" Flat CRT Monitor
Don't expect a clean screen on this monitor. It will come with visible horizontal lines 1/4 and 3/4 of the way down from the top of the screen and they are annoying when you have a light background or a dark background. If your background is black they may not show. Don't spend your money on this monitor. I was very diappointed for the price I paid. ViewSonic says this:

Two faint horizontal lines on my monitor screen

The two lines you see are called horizontal damper wires. These damper wires are required to maintain the aperture grille's alignment and will cast a shadow on the screen. In most applications, these lines will blend into the background, but they will be visible against lightly-colored screens. They are an integral part of the technology and are not considered a defect.

Why doesn't ViewSonic disclose these lines in the specs? ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

The G520's short-neck cathode-ray tube design squeezes an extensive 19.8-inch screen into a unit that's less than 19 inches deep, freeing up some much needed space in close work quarters. A tube that's 50 percent shorter than conventional CRTs places all 21 inches of viewing area comfortably onto any desktop.

Image clarity is maximized with a 0.24-millimeter aperture grille pitch, and Sony's Enhanced Elliptical Correction System automatically corrects picture deformation for sharper video. The G520's large screen area packs a palette of resolutions to adapt to a variety of video memory freedoms and constraints.A maximum resolution of 1,600 by 1,200 at 75 Hz can accommodate the most demanding video requirements of your applications, from DVD to CAD design.

Sony's GeoLock circuitry erects an impervious barrier between the CRT and any stray electromagnetic field the G520 may encounter, resulting in consistently stable, uniform image projection. Active Signal Correction eliminates the need to manually adjust the screen settings by instantly optimizing the basic picture controls for largest viewing area. All digital controls are still available, however, at the touch of the keypad below the screen.

The G520 is intended for Windows NT/98 platform communication with PCs, but it's fully Macintosh compatible as well. Dual input control allows for simultaneous connection to two computers, including a Macintosh and PC at the same time. International Energy Star compliance ensures limited emissions and more efficient power consumption. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars got the shakes
My Sony 520's have the shakes too. I've had four of them in my lab and they're terrible. Text and vertical lines appear to squirm, it is extremely unpleasant. I tried everything to cure the problem, I made sure there were no other electronics near the monitors, downloaded the latest drivers, ran on UPS, moved to another building, nothing worked.

I managed to return two of them before and Sony is working on a pro-rated buyback for me, so that's good. I don't understand how these monitors can have this problem!!! They're all used on brand new computers with four different video cards (the better the card, the worse the problem!). Including GeForce4Ti4600, GeForce4Ti4200 and Radeon9500pro.

I'm going to go to LCD's from now on, or another brand if I want the big screen for much lower price (20" LCD's are still cost prohibative).

5-0 out of 5 stars Sweet Monitor
Great Monitor, crystal clear, for drafting / gaming / multi-tasking its a must.Dual input is usefull if you are running two machines, such as a desktop and a server, you can switch back and forth by a simple switch, on the front of the monitor, unlike some other brands.

2-0 out of 5 stars SONY CPD G520 image stability and service commitment lacking
After 3 different units, I have not been able to get one that doesn't have a slight shake. For three months I've sent units back to Sony 4 times, with no satisfaction.

I have three other monitors in the same room, a samsung, a princeton, and a smaller sony, and they are all rock-solid.What does it say about the quality of this...unit if it shakes, sometimes a lot, when these $[money] models from other manufacturers function perfectly.

Sony has told me they are "finished" with me, as it must be my problem, not their equipment.I feel that they should stand behind their stuff, as it didn't work correctly ou of the box. Some were worse than others, and the last one only shakes a little, but still, it's a $[money] piece of equipment!!!

I returned the first unit, one day after I got it, to their local [Boston] repair site, and got back a REFURBISHED unit, which was not only against their own stated policy, but illegal in Massachusetts, and probably other states.

After talking to innumerable people, Scott Lake, the supervisor, decided that Sony was not going to really stand behind their product, and informed me that they would not attempt to find the problem, replace the unit again, or refund my money, as I believe the law in Mass says they have to.I informed him that I was a totally disabled veteran, and this would be a terrible hardship for me, but I was told, basically, to buzz off.

I'm sure that many people are very satisified with SONY stuff, as I was with my GDM 2038...but when you are the unlucky one, you could end up with an eye-bender like this one, and an eye-opening service experience like this one too...almost 3 months of waiting, moving, repacking and reshipping... trying hard to solve the problem, and to be treated like thisyeech.... SONY should be ashamed...

When I try to sell it, I'll take a $[money] hit off the top because it is "refurbished" rather than a new replacement.

This is just a word to the wise. The shine is off the SONY star for me.

I think that Small Claims Court is my next stop.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sony's 3 year warranty
I have a Sony 21 inch monitor model 500PS. Since the G520 is the best selling 21 incher on Amazon I just wanted to throw in my 2 cents worth.

I have owned my Sony monitor for 2 years and 6 months. I have never had any problems with it then bang, about a week ago I got a blank screen while crusing the net. I took my monitor into a local shop and they called Sony about my monitor. Sony said to ship it to them at my cost which was on a Saturday and Sony fixed my monitor and sent it back (at Sony's cost) the following Saturday.

Sony's 3 year warranty, service and the company that stands behind its products, ROCKS. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars It really IS a bad purchase!
I like the high resolutions. But unfortunately, as stated by others, the text looks like JUNK at higher resolutions.I found the text to start looking bad at above 1600x1200 before text blurring occurred. Some people don't like to go higher, but I'm a multi exploring windowed, three files open at once kinda multi-tasker, so I like to have high resolutions.
Text blurring shouldn't be a video card issue, either. If it's any consolation I have a RADEON X800XT PE.

After about my 6th month having it, it died on me.I have NEVER had a monitor die on me.I've owned about 6 monitors over the last 17 years, and usually I buy a new monitor every 4 years.I'm stuck back to my OLD monitor again until I can replace the piece of junk P95F.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Monitor
I bought the ViewSonic P95F+B 19" CRT Monitor two weeks ago. This is the first ViewSonic monitor I have owned and I couldn't be more pleased. The speed that it draws the screen (refresh rate) is very fast compared to other monitors. If you have to wait for your monitor to draw the screen while surfing the internet, you'll appreciate this monitors speed and choice of resolutions. The ultrabrite settings are wonderful when you want to brighten up the screen. My monitor is next to a window that has a lot of sunshine coming in, and the 3x brightness setting is perfect for contrast and being able to see the monitor clearly. All text and pictures are sharp and clear with no distortion.Colors are rich and vibrant.Of the many monitors I have used this is by far the best. The monitor controls will need to be adjusted, along with display controls in Windows XP when setting it up.After setting it up, be prepared to be dazzled.Newegg.com has a lot of positive reviews for this monitor, but I got the best price from Amazon.I wasn't sure that I would like to have a black monitor, but this is a sleek looking beauty.Awesome monitor!!

5-0 out of 5 stars This monitor is fantastic.
Having only used 17" normal CRTs up until now I had a hard time choosing which 19" flat panel to get. Although all of the possible choices were plagued by complaints about "blurry sections" or "missing pixels" I eventually decided on this one and I have not regretted it for a second. For the record, I was also seriously considering a Philips 109B, which is a bit cheaper if cash is a big issue.

The bad: One other reviewer mentioned a blurry section southwest of centre. This is true, I also have this, however as soon as I raised the monitor to 75Hz it disappeared (or became to slight for me to notice). Also, the settings do require a bit of fine tuning, I find that the shape of the screen tends to change VERY slightly over time and has to be readjusted once a fortnight or so. Third, the base, as others have mentioned, is hard to attach. My simple solution to this is to simply rest the monitor on the base without clipping it in. Unless you are continually lifting the monitor this works without problems. Finally, due to the aperture grille there are two very fine horizontal lines about 1/5 and 4/5 of the way up the screen. This makes no difference during games but I can see how it could get irritating while reading text.

The Good: Both text and games are great. I find the text crisp for both white on black and black on white which makes surfing the net (and writing this review) easier on the eyes. Games are also done well, the brightness controls are very convenient especially, allowing me to change from games to text easily. TV (which I have running through this comp.) also turns out well. The subtler shape controls/degauss/moire etc. are what is to be expected and allow easy management when one needs to make fine shape adjustments.

Overall: In my opinion, a great buy. Admittedly I am a first timer to 19" Flat Screens, but nevertheless I highly recommend this.

5-0 out of 5 stars Blurry??? where???Best Bang for the Buck!!!!
The Good: Great bang for the buck. There is Still no LCD that can match it for picture quality, and speed. The color reproduction is wonderful. The multi brightness is a good feature, but I do not think I will be using that to often. Almost invisible aperture bar grilles across screen. It can keep up with the best of todays video cards. I do not see any blur in text, except at MAX resolution, then it starts to go around the edges. But then again I do have a ATI 9800 256xt video card, and that could make a difference.

The bad: Like so many others have stated the base is not easy to attach and a little flimsy. It takes awhile to get your settings set up, but the end results are worth it. you really have to spend some time getting your color alignment right. this makes a difference at higher resolutions also. I personally find the little birds in the corner, the tag in the other corner and the ViewSonic nameplate a bit distracting, so I had them airbrushed to match the case.

OVERALL: Great bang for the buck. This is a great monitor for a home user that spends some time in Photoshop, does home movie editing, and a gaming. Just a wonderful all around monitor.

2-0 out of 5 stars Great color, unclear text
I bought my P95F+B a few days ago.

The good: Flat panel. With adjustment, you can get the picture right out to the edges. The color is fantastic - especially in games. The ultra-bright button really makes games pop.The aperture grill bars are almost unnoticable.

The bad: The base doesn't mount into the unit. You have to struggle to get the monitor to sit on the base. After you ajust the H/V/Geometry settings they seem to get lost.

The ugly: Wow, the text just sucks.I have a largish mushy spot a little southwest of center.Text becomes a problem at any resolution above 1024x768.The refresh rates will go higher than 85Hz, but raising them does not solve anything.

I'm returning this as soon as the shop I bought it from has a G90 in stock - although I've heard bad things about those as well. When you are looking at monitors, make the salespeople turn off the crappy movie they always use to demo and pull up Outlook or this web page.Take a good close look at the text before choosing the monitor and opening your wallet. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Monster Display !
This huge monitor is superb if you have room for it.

I actually havethe version which has a USB hub built-in (model P817).

To get the bestresults from this monitor, certainly use an advanced (latest/greatest)video card. I'm using a Voodoo 3 3000 AGP video card (16MB high-speed SDRAMAGP 2x)... and there are even mightier cards on the market now.

The USBports on the side of the monitor are extremely convenient. There are fourports, which are a lot easier to access than the ports on the back of thecomputer. The necessary cables are included for PC and Mac connections.Understand that this monitor connects using the "traditional"graphics cable (included/attached). If you get the P817 which has the USBhub -- there is a cable included which connects the hub to your USB port onthe back of your computer.

I'm so much more productive with this 21-inchscreen since I can see more info on the screen at once. And the resolutionis great, with a high refresh-rate which is greater on the eyes.

Theon-screen controls are a great help also.

I love this monitor - andhaven't had any problems whatsoever in the 8 months since I purchased it.

5-0 out of 5 stars outdated specs; new specs are better than listed
i checked out viewsonic's website and the specs there reflect the latestmodel. the most notable difference is that the max resolution is now1800x1440. the viewsonic csr told me that this model is the only one thathas shipped for the past year, so trust viewsonic's specs and not the oneslisted here.

5-0 out of 5 stars This review is being written on the ViewSonic P810-3
We bought 5 on these monitors. They all worked fine out of the box.One appeared to have problems; however it turned out to be the high-resolution card that was not on the Compaq approved list. Replaced the card and Tada.

The P810-3 has the same front-end buttons found on the E771. And theviewable area may be 20 inches but there is no annoying black border.

Most of the time these monitors are being used for Pro-E and Auto Cad.But when no one is looking we use the monitors for System Admin. You canpull up four screens viewable at once. One can be programming, while theother can be the results a third screen for monitoring and a fourth forcommunications.

Six Months now and no problems. We will buy more. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Designers Dream
I own 2 of these p815 monitors and they are fantastic!!
I am a High End Graphic Designer and do about 60 hours of work
a week on these monitors. I Run both monitors on a Matrox G400
Dual head and they work like a charm for my design work, the
Colors are so clear and perfect it is amazing! I have had
Sony and NEC monitors and nothing compares to the color of
these Viewsonic P815's. I have seen people state problems
at 1600 resolution with text... All I have to say is you might
want to check your video card or your cables because it is
not the monitors. I can view text and images with out any blur
at 1600 res. it is actually crystal clear. How can you not like
this monitor.. 96hz @ 1600 res. .25 dot pitch on a 21" monitor
with a flat screen! that is just amazing for a 21" monitor.
When you buy viewsonic p815 your getting an outstanding visual
quality monitor in all aspects.

5-0 out of 5 stars Big Monitors require Better than Average Video Cards !!!
Hi, I am a Tax & Investment Professional and Investment Advisor and I utilize the Viewsonic P815 for viewing level II split screen streaming stock quotes; tax preparation and preparing taxes on Windows-based tax preparation software. I have also used this monitor when reviewing and analyzing tax preparation software which allows you to view 2 pages of tax documents in the same viewing screen on the same page view...no problems in clarity here of the numbers or letters in any mode or pixel view.
(...)The Viewsonic is comparable with any SONY @ any resolution including 1600x1200;what is required is a better than average video card. At the time he wrote his review way back in year 2000 there were very few 64MB video cards on the market. As I recall only Diamond Viper and Nvidea had one of the retail ones and all the rest were high end professional products. Now in year 2001 every company on the market has a 64MB video card and there are even some 128 MB video cards out here too. I suggest using at least a 64MB Video Card with this product which is as it says a "professional monitor". Professional monitors do require a better than avergage video card for superior perfomance. By the way, this monitor series by Viewsonic will allow you to work 12-14 hour days without eye strain of any type. Now this monitor is very BIG in size, so if your desk space is at a premium I would suggest you opt for one of the new flat panel LCD 17" or 18" monitors. But if you seek a quality large screen monitor and don't mind it taking up at least 25 " of desk space then this IS the monitor for you.
This is my 3rd Viewsonic purchase this year; I bought my 75 year old mother a 19" one and I have one in my second office.
I am very pleased with the quality of their products. Just make sure you spend good money and get a quality video card to match your monitor purchase. (I have been using computer monitors for work in excess of 20 years now.)

3-0 out of 5 stars Blurry? You don?t need glasses. The problem is the monitor!
I'm a software developer. I spend long, long hours in front of my computer programming and creating graphics. I have a 21" Sony GDM-500PS at work, an excellent monitor. Because I often take some work home and the resolution of my home's 17" monitor wasn't giving me too much desktop space to work with all my windows, I decided to get a new 21" to use it at 1600x1200 as I do at work with the Sony GDM-500PS.I choose the ViewSonic's P815 because it offers about the same features of the Sony's GDM-500PS for $300 bucks less and ViewSonic's name reputation.Well, I just got my new P815 and honestly I would like to return it and get my money back. The monitor has a nice set of features. You can pretty much do whatever you like with the image to get it perfectly squared from edge to edge. The monitor offers good picture quality up to resolutions of 1280x1024. At higher resolutions, 1600x1200 and above, the contrast degrades badly. This is very annoying when using applications that display dark text over bright backgrounds (browsing web pages, Word documents, and most source code editors). The white background is so bright that seems to consume the text making it blurry and hard to read. It is like having an unsolicited anti-alias filter constantly running. I have the contrast level to max, and the text still blurry and hard to read. Over time it gets you eyes really tired. I won't recommend this monitor to any PhotoShop users, CAD users or Software Developers willing to use resolutions of 1600x1200 or higher and that will be spend long hours of development time in front of the screen.

Amazon.com Review

The NEC MultiSync FE1250 is a 22-inch monitor well suited to small andhome office users working with graphics and reading lots of text onscreen. It isan excellent investment for power users of all stripes.

The FE1250 featuresNEC's totally flat aperture grille technology that delivers crisp, undistortedimages that closely match the look of a printed page. This design prohibitsdistortion around the edges of the screen while maintaining superb brightness.Although the CRT size is 22 inches, there are 20 inches of viewable screen realestate--still plenty for working with 1,024 x 768 and even 1,280 x 1,024resolutions. While the manufacturer recommends a 1,600 x 1,200 resolution, wefound that a bit unusable except for working with large graphic images.

Withdimensions of 19.7 by 19 by 18.6 inches, and weighing 70 pounds, this unitrequires some space, but sports a streamlined front face. The buttonscontrolling the onscreen display are right out front, along with a lightedMultiSync logo that turns green when the monitor receives a signal. Theconfiguration menus are quite comprehensive and provide five preset profiles andone custom RGB profile, image alignment (including rotate), and convergencesettings.

The variable 0.25-to-0.27-millimeter grille pitch, coupled with highrefresh rates at the common resolutions, produced a vivid and consistent imagefor us during our testing. We were able to run at 85 Hz in both 1,024 x 768 and1,280 x 1,024 resolutions, though the latter mode was a bit too blurry to usecomfortably. True to the company's claim, however, the corners of the displayremained undistorted compared to the remainder of the screen.

The MultiSyncFE1250 is a solid performer that sports just the right size screen forcomfortable, productive work. It's a great choice for users who live in wordprocessors or Web browsers. --Stephen W. Plain

5-0 out of 5 stars beutiful monitor
I got one of these monitors at a computer show and have been impressed eversince. the monitor has a beutiful picture,DVD are so clear that you can see every hair on a persons head. Being able to display at 2048X1536 gives graphics proprams the chance to prove themselves. All in all this monitor is a good deal at any price.

5-0 out of 5 stars for a professional on a budget
This monitor offers superb quality image and color gamme. Also supports high resolution at tolerable refresh rates - I run mine 1600x1200 at 85. There are some minor annoyances, but even I, being almost as picky as it gets, just overlook 'em. I'm happy with my buy.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Monitor for SOHO users!!!
This monitor is absolutely amazing. The images are sharp and the text is very clear.Plus the monitor being flat is a plus also! Some monitors I've seen have a low refresh rate, but you won't have that problem with this monitor.I use it at 1600x1200 resolution and the refresh rate is 85 Hz.No flicker there :)The only minuses I can think of are the 2 very very faint horizontal lines in the screen but that cant be helped since its an aperature grill and that the monitor is big.But hey, if you're buying a 21" monitor, you'd expect it to be big right?Buy this monitor and you won't be disappointed. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Expensive but worth the price
I have been happily using my FW900 12-24 hrs a day for over 3 years now. If I had to go back to using a 19 inch monitor, I would probably lose my mind. I previously owned a Viewsonic 21" monitor. This Sony GDM-FW900 is superior. Even a 21" monitor seems small now.

I find that the unit works best for text and picutres at 1600 x 1024 pixels resolution with True Color (32 bit. I have also used it at 1920 x 1200 pixels and High Color (16 bit) for more graphical work. I run at 85Hz refersh rate, which gives a nice, bright picture with minimal eye strain.

If you have never owned a large monitor, be advised that they are very sensitive to nearby elecrical devices that produce magnetic fields. It is best to allow at least 3 feet of separation between your monitor and other devices. If you decrease the distance, you will encounter distortion on the corners.Luckily, the Sony GDM-FW900 has a sophisticated menu that allows you to compensate for interfering magnetic fields.

Also be advised that larger monitors put out a LOT OF HEAT.Luckily, the Sony GDM-FW900 has circuitry to reduce power consumption.

This monitor is expensive (I paid $1700 for mine), but it is definitely worth the price.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's got the most OOOOOOHh factor.....
I have been using Sun's near flat 21" monitor, but when we finally started to have image problems with them (actually, they were getting really old..:o() I knew the time had come to pony up some bucks again for monitors. So after some research into what's out there today new and used, we found some 3 year old 24" tru-flat Trinitron's, off lease. I decided to give it a shot and picked up a handful of them.

Surprisingly, each one had a consistent picture either using graphics programs, viewing images, or even playing DVD's. While I can't speak on Sony's warranty support of the unit (not replacing defective new units with another new one, etc. etc.), I am extremely satisfied with each of the units I am working with. Since we weren't planning to shell out a few grand each for the latest widescreen L.C.D's, preferred to avoid a high interest lease payment, and flat our refused to downsize (perish the thought), we decided to roll the dice on these used Sony C.R.T.'s.

In retrospect, I'm glad we did. We have been extremely happy with this model Sony. In fact from my perspective, the image quality for hi-res graphics rendering (and the occasional game, off company time of course!)with the GDM-FW900 is superior to a comparable LCD.

I, like perhaps you, have also read on line that there might be a slight chance of an uneven or inconsistent image with this Sony monitor. So expecting the worst, I checked with a local repair shop on the cost of a CPU before I made this purchase. They told me a replacement would run me about $200. installed. Not bad considering the cake we saved.

While it's true that the big LCD's do take up far less desk space. And yes, it does take 2 people to move one of these bulky 95 pound things around. Do I also need to mention there's no warranty on 2nt owner monitors from Sony no matter how new they are?

Yet, I couldn't escape the wallet factor. While they weren't on fire sale by any means, I was able to keep nearly $1500 clams per monitor in the bank by moving in this direction. To me, while warranties and desk space are important, they ain't that important! (read I made my Xmas bonus and then some on this deal). And if one does happen to self destruct, it won't be that big of a deal to simply get it fixed locally. Plus, I don't have to worry about spending the big bucks to send a unit on a 4 week vacation to California for a warranty claim. Or even worse, have Sony charge me the freight to replace a defective one with a refurb.

Besides, I love the OOOOHh factor when someone sees them....There's nothing else like it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Paradise Lost
At the risk of being that guy who comes in and pulls down the rating of a product that everyone else loves and gives "This suxors!" as a reason, I must relate my tale of woe. I will go into more detail than the normal dimwitted party pooper.

Witness the death of a dream. Three years ago, I took the plunge and bought the truly awe-inspiring Sony GDM-FW900 monitor: 24 inches of viewing goodness, 16:10 widescreen ratio, flat screen, and a Trinitron tube. Bliss! The admission price was a hefty $2300, but I couldn't imagine needing or wanting another monitor for at least five years, maybe more!

The honeymoon was out of a dimestore romance. I had the brains, she had the looks, and together we made a lovely couple. Widescreen movies and gaming (in those titles that supported it) was intoxicating. Carrying her mammoth-like girth over my third-floor threshold nearly killed me (literally), but otherwise we had the makings of a solid, long-lasting relationship.

Then came the blues. Sadness and heartache, yes, but, more importantly, a blue cast that crept into the image about eight months from purchase. No amount of tweaking the color calibration controls could remove it. Changing cards, cables, and computers proved futile. Over the next year, the problem worsened, with blacks growing lighter and lighter.

Finally, after playing Fade to Blue, Blue and White, and Bluehawk Down, I called Sony for a replacement. Still under warranty, I said. Refurbished units only, Sony said. You've got to be kidding, I said. Read the fine print, Sony said. Within a week, the refurbished model arrived at my door. I nervously hooked it up, hoping that I hadn't undergone life and death drama-hauling the replacement up three flights of stairs and lugging the original down three flights of stairs-in vain. Lo and behold, the blue cast was gone! There was a green cast instead.

And that's how it was for nearly a year. I decided I'd rather deal with the green than face another game of upstairs downstairs (seriously, the thing weighs 95 pounds and comes in a gigantic cardboard cube that makes it impossible to hold or get through normal doorways or stairwells; carrying the monitor to a third-floor walk-up is a friggin' trial of Hercules). Fiddling with the color controls only resulted in changing the green cast to brown. At least I had options.

Last night, the refurb died. Well, it might as well have. The screen is now blanketed in serene, fuzzy white, as if fresh powdered snow had fallen inside the monitor overnight. I was afraid I'd developed glaucoma until I looked away. It occassionally flashes red and green, giving the whole room the ambience of Studio 54. No amount of calibrating, screaming, hitting, or crying makes any difference. I am now beyond my original three-year warranty and the refurb's 90 day(!) warranty. Both my huge monitor and my huge pile of money have passed on. All that's left is to write the eulogy.

GDM-FW900, I hardly knew ye. No, that's not true. Ye were a piece of crap.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best money can buy
I've had this monitor for well over two years now, and i'm still loving it as much as i did when i first got it. I've had very few problems with it, but i did/do have some.

First problem was the 'jittering' or shaking that occurs at certain resolutions and certain refresh rates. I'm not sure what causes this, dirty power lines, EMF interference from other electronic devices, or what, but using Powerstrip and setting it to a different refresh rate (like 83 instead of 80 or 85) will fix this. I believe my problem was EMF or something from other devices, because now i don't have the problem... but when i did, powerstrip fixed it.

Second problem is convergence... there just isn't enough options, and you can't get it to be 100% perfectly converged, but you can come close enough, and just expanding the screen so it fills up all the edges takes care of it just fine.

Last problem is the casing or bezel or whatever you want to call the front of the monitor, but it's quite fragile. I've nicked it twice now from bumping things into the monitor (coffee mug as i walked by, and lifting a computer and accidentally striking the bezel). They're very small nicks, but still.

Other than those problems... this monitor has been absolutely perfect. I paid over $3k USD for this over two years ago, and although the price has dramatically dropped over the years, this is still one of best (if not the best) monitors around. Everybody who has seen a game on this at 1920x1200 or 1920x1440 are absolutely amazed at it, including me after these years.

Oh, i guess i should mention a couple of problems... but these aren't Sony fault. One, not all games are available at 1920x1200 and higher... which means sometimes i end up playing at 1600x1200. The only problem with this, is that you'll end up having black bars on either side of the screen.

Second, is that when you're playing at such extreme resolutions, your computer - especially your video card - has to be very uptodate, especially for the newer games. This means i'm literally buying a new highend video card and processor every year.

So if you can afford this monitor, and you keep your system updated often, then treat yourself to this monitor. I see people spending $2000+ on a system, then $200 on a 19" low end monitor, and that just boggles my mind. To me, the monitor should be THE most important aspect of a computer. Buy a good monitor, and it'll not only be a treat and pleasure, but it'll last you YEARS, and live through several computer upgrades/purchases.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb CRT Monitor
I've owned this monitor for about three months now, and I must agree with Scott Pope's review in toto.

It IS quite heavy, but I don't mind this so much since I don't move my monitor very much, as a rule. It is also deep, but if you have the space for a 21-inch monitor, then you'll have enough space for this one.

I, too, use the 1920 x 1200 resolution, as I've been unable to find a card that supports the 2304 x 1400 res. Currently, I use an ATI Raedon 9700 Pro and am quite happy with the results. This monitor also supports inputs from two boxes, someting that may be of interest to people like me who have a small LAN but don't want the clutter of multiple monitors.

The controls on this monitor are quite easy to use. I quite agree with Scott that, although the monitor is targeted for CAD pros and such, there are many advantages for the more "casual" user: DVDs are SUPERB in widescreen mode (the monitor having a true 16 x 10 aspect ratio), desktop space is greatly enhanced; and applicatins like Adobe Photoshop and Pagemaker are greatly benefitted by the additional workspace that this monitor affords.

Web pages are no problem, either. Given browser controls, text size etc. are easily controlled, and surfing is actually more pleasurable.

In sum, don't worry about the weight or the space required of this monitor. They're not so much an issue. Just get a friend to help move it, and a sturdy table to put it on, and you'll be fine. The rewards this monitor offers more outweigh (pun intended) the physical proportions of the monitor.

Oh, if you do buy the monitor, be sure to visit the Sony site and get the .inf file. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great monitor, but beware
This an outstanding monitor,(...). But a monitor is only as good as the hardware and software that drives it. On this count, NEC has not, in my opinion, done a great job. (But neither has anyone else.)

There are three (plus) components that will affect performance:
(1) The monitor itself. Put two "identical" displays on identical systems side by side and you will get different results.
(2) The display card and its drivers. This is a huge gray area. A lousy card will make a great monitor look bad.
(3) The computer itself. The basic control over image display resides in the operating system and hardware.

I have been using this monitor for several months on a Mac G4 Dual 800 with the nVidia GeForce Twinview display card. When I get good results, the FP1350x is one of the best displays I have ever seen. But I have seen intermittent problems. As with most problems in the computer industry, everybody blames everybody else, so it is very difficult to pin down the cause of any problem.

Closing thought: monitors of this size are designed to run at the higher resolutions, so if you can't get readable text, good color, etc., at 1600 x 1200 or higher, the monitor is effectively useless.

Other monitors to consider in this price range: Philips Brilliance 201B and 201P; Sony CPD-G500 and G520.

5-0 out of 5 stars You'll never go back to those puny CRTs.
The FP 1350x is truly a high-performance CRT. The Flat CRT reduces glare tremendously, and the Ambix technology digital imput protects the initial investment in the monitor. Warning: You will get spoiled using a monitor with so much screen size...you'll have a hard time going back to anything smaller. 5 Stars all the way!!! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Malfunctioned 3 Times Before Replacement
The Good ...
Picture & Colour

The Bad ...
Bad Support!!! (Really really bad)
On average malfunctions after 3 months.
Controls are awkward.
Cheap cable connection to video card.
Heavy

Mostly my complaints originate from when I first started dealing with Sony Canada Customer Support (or lack there of it). After my G410R malfunctioned for the third time Sony decided to replace the unit with a new one. They promised me I'd have a new unit by the end of December or early January. Now it's late January and I still haven't heard anything from Sony.

I've tried calling, e-mailing, and writing Sony, but have not received a phone call or mailing back. I received some e-mail response but it only suggested that I phone the support number (doing so I was put on hold for 30min. and then told nothing useful once I get through). A couple of times I was promised they'd call me back to let me know where my replacement monitor was but they never called!

In summary, don't buy a Sony! Nothing Sony! I personally used to love Sony products. Some of the Sony products I own include: an expensive Sony DSC, a Sony Home Entertainment System, a Sony Walkman, a Sony Discman, a Sony portable radio, a 2nd Sony Monitor, and a Sony speaker system. I was planing on buying a Sony portable MP3 player and a Sony Clie, but not anymore! Now they've lost a very loyal customer only because their support is so poor.

Good luck to you if you buy a Sony and you need support. I would suggest just steering clear of it and buy a monitor from a reputable manufacturer such as ViewSonic, Samsung, or NEC.

When I finally get my replacement monitor back from Sony, I'm planning on selling it on eBay and getting something new (obviously not from Sony).

4-0 out of 5 stars Own two of these
I bought one and about a month later I purchased another one to go along with my dual card.My observations are as follows:

Picture quality is very good, excellent color and brightness.

The first one purchased was manufactured in Dec 2001.Noticed that black text bleeds into the white, meaning that you can see a slight red shadow around the black text. The second one purchased was manufactured in March 2002.The shadow is less visable on this one. There are adjustments that can be made but I have not been able to eliminate it.My viewsonic G810 was worse though.Same problem when using a different computer and graphic card.

Monitors chirps when in power save mode. One manufactured in Dec 2001 is worse than the on in Manufactured in march 2002

Monitor is not perfectly flat. It does bend inward a little. No big deal

Light reflection off the monitor is almost no existant.Turning on a light near it does not affect ability to see the screen images.Big plus.

Good refresh rates even when set to higher resolutions.

You can work for hours and your eyes do not get tired because it is flat.Got headaches with Viewsonic G810.

Monitor is deep.Make sure you have room to accomodate.

Prefer have two 19" rather one 21".More screen real estate and with dual card you can view two documents without flipping through max an min of windows. ... Read more
