Pricey but beautiful..
First things first: the 20" Apple Cinema uses the same panel as the Dell Ultrasharp 2005FPW. I paid less than retail for the Cinema due to a coupon and another discount but regardless, the price was almost twice what the Dell cost (if caught during one of Dell's frequent sales or from a third party reseller). I repeat: the Dell and Apple use the SAME Philips panel.So why buy the Apple? I like the brushed aluminum case, stand and clean look. Frivolous but for something I have to look at every day, I find it important to have something that's pleasing to the eye. And please it does. It is truly a work of art that wouldn't be out of place in the Guggenheim. The resolution and response times are outstanding. Video is smooth with no noticeable artifacts. The display is very bright and has good off angle viewing. Using it in daylight with the windows open isn't a problem. The widescreen makes viewing and editing documents side by side easy. Did I mention bright? Bottom line, this is an outstanding display. The 20" widescreen is a good compromise between smaller 17"-19" displays and the almost too large 23"-24" screens. Larger is usually better for movies and television but for the desktop, I find the 23" and up a little too big. A best buy this isn't but a frivolous purchase once in a while won't kill you.

A Stunning display
This is by far the best computer display I have ever seen in my 22 year affair with computers. The design of the display is just stunning - it's a jewel on your desktop or on your wall. It's bright (even in mid day full sunlight), it's crisp, the colors are alive/fantastic and it's very easy on the eyes. It is not only superior to any LCD I have seen to date but also better than any CRT I ever looked at (numerous - believe me, including all kind of mitsubishi, sony etc). I am truely excited about this monitor. By the way, DVD films look great on it too! Well worth the money. It will make you happy.

20" with a PC/DVI
After several months of debating whether or not it was worth the money, I finally bought one of these babies.I hesitated for so long because of the price.I came close to ordering the 21" Samsung several times but really wanted a WS.After seeing the in the Apple stores several times, I really wanted one but $1300 was a big chunk of change.Then when the price dropped to below $1000 I gave in.

Overall, it is an impressive display.I am running it with a custom built PC using an ATI 9700 Pro w/DVI out.At first I could not get the thing to work at native resolution at all and any other res would produce strange results.Eventually, I discovered that something was wrong with my display drivers and I simply wiped out windows and started over from scratch (had been meaning to do it anyway and I upgraded the HD at the same time).After that, it worked like a champ.No problems whatsoever.

My only grips are the incompatibility with XP and the USB hub in the display.This is a well know problem with the PCs and Apple does not seem to care.Also, the only hard button controls you get are brightness and contrast.No other screen adjustments with the PC.I haven't really need any since the display have proven to be very intelligent when resizing different screen res's and I can use the ATI drivers to adjust things like color temp and gamma.

Other then that it is a fantastic display for the price.

Apple Cinema 20" Display
I bought a G-5 last summer and was using a 17" PC monitor for months with it. Let me say that the monitor is more important than I thought! I am a graphic designer/artist that works on the computer most of the day. If you are using a computer as a professional and especially a graphic person PLEASE CONSIDER THIS FOR YOURSELF!!!!! I also talked my boss into getting me one at work ... so I have one at the office and at home.

The graphics are so crisp and clear! The wide format which allows you to have all your pallets and toolbars open and still have a two page spread open with NO overlap! This is worth the cash in it's self. It is a lot easier on the eyes than a CRT.

The only downside to it is there is a little banding on it when viewing a DVD movie, or a heavy video game... but mine is used 95% work and internet so I don't care.

Apple Cinema Display gives you full computing experience...
There was a time that I never considered buying an Apple display. I figured a Mac costs enough money, without spending $1000, or more, on a display.In late January 2005, I purchased the newest Powerbook G4 12 inch 1.5 GHZ G4, with superdrive.The notebook had nearly all the performance I was looking for, and the small form factor allows me to easily haul it around the house, or the world should I ever get to travel properly.However, I wanted more from my Powerbook, when at my desk.

Yes, I was already using my Powerbook with an external display.It was an analog Sony LCD.However, it was only 15 inches, with a resolution of 1024x768, so I actually had as little screen real estate on my external display, as I had on the 12 inch built-in display.I wanted more.

After deciding a 17 inch LCD would not be enough, I ordered the Apple's 20" Cinema Display, and I'm glad I did.Unfortunately, the box arrived beat-up, and there was even dirt inside.However, everything inside seemed to work ok, thankfully.Un-wrapping the cinema display was a joy, and I was eager to put it on my desk.The design of this display is stunning.The aluminium enclosure will please the eyes of anyone, and the back of the display is as beautiful, if not more beautiful than the front.There is a single cable that comes from the back of the display, which neatly goes through an opening on the aluminium stand.This single cable splits in the end into Firewire, USB, DVI, and a power connector that you plug into the power brick.I connected the firewire, USB, and DVI to my Powerbook, and then I connected the power to the display.Wow.It was perfect out of the box.I could never get the color profile right on my old external display, but the cinema display was out of the box the most beautiful display I had ever used.The brightness was exceptional, and it took a few days for me to get used to the brightness. Yes, you can lower the brightness with grace of your finger over the sophisticated tough-sensitive buttons on the right side of the display, but I loved the look at full-brightness.

My computing experience has been at another level, since the cinema display arrived.Whether I'm browsing the web, working in Photoshop and iPhoto, or making a movie in iMovie, the 20" cinema display and its 1680x1050 resolution is a joy to use.The display also gives me two USB and two Firewire ports directly behind the panel, which is incredibly convenient.If you're a gamer, which I'm not, you will appreciate the 16ms response this display offers.

Yes, your computer does all the hard work, but it is your display you interact with. A great display like the Apple Cinema Display allows you to get more done, with less work and effort. For example, you do not have to figure out how to fit all your Photoshop palettes on the screen, for there is plenty of room.

DVDs are quite the experience on this display as well.I popped in Shrek 2, and I was amazed by the images, but DVDs are far from the only reason you should want a widescreen.The widescreen aspect of this display allows you to work in the way our minds are designed and used to working.We read from left to right, so a display that is wider than it is long makes a lot of sense.

Overall, if you would like to save some money, there are other displays out there.Dell actually offers a 20 inch widescreen display, which compares nicely with this one, even supporting additional inputs.However, it does lack something.It lacks the beauty in design that the Apple Cinema Display offers, and it probably lacks some of the quality control that Apple strives hard to achieve.For example, Apple might reject some of the panels they use inside of this display, if they suspect quality concerns, where other manufactures may use any panel they are supplied with, without spending the time and money to ensure a quality panel. If you believe you would like to spend some money on a fantastic display to use with your Powerbook, PowerMac, or DVI-output PC, then you should not pass-up this beauty.It is truly a piece of art from an aesthetics point of view, and the images it displays are spectacular.This display will not look like "yesterday's" display anytime soon.In fact, it is a pleasure to enjoy a display that does not look like it should be part of a busy, cluttered office.This display oozes beauty and grace, and the stock Apple pictures do not do it justice. Great Monitor for the money, Its better than my old one that would heat my small home office up. The review from picky consumer"f" said the image quality was bad, maybe that person needs to see a eye doctor. Image quality is great, im glad i bought it.

Great Bang For The Buck
No dead pixels, nice vibrant colors (after some tweaking), no complaints. It's connected to an iBook 12' laptop which supports only up to 1024x768, and though Acer recommends using the monitor at 1280x960 for best results, I'm happy with the image it gives.

Nice bright display
My 21" Nokia CRT finally gave out last week and I ordered up two of these Acer AL1912 LCD's to run off of my dual head video card.I checked around for a straight replacement for my old 21" but found the price on an equal monitor had actually gone up.I noticed the Acer LCD on sale for just over 3 bills and figured two would make a great replacement and give me a little more desktop real estate to work with.

After setup, I measured the new 19" LCD and the old 21" screens to compare and found the actual viewable size was only 3/4" smaller!Though max resolution is 1280 x 1024 on the LCD, I only notice a small difference, the addition of the 2nd flat panel though yeilded a great deal of welcome new space.The new LCD has a very nice bright and vivid display and after installing the driver, I was able to update the refresh frequency to 75hz and play my favorite first person shooter (counterstrike source).

Games are always the toughest test for any computer system so a component that can game well, will definately do great on any desktop application like photo editing, or web browsing.I noticed while browsing a couple sites, the white background of pages was so bright it was actually too much so I cranked the brightness down to 50%.The display stand and case have a nice black design that is compact compared to its equal CRT counterpart and compliment my black computer case and keyboard.The shelf on my desk that the CRT monitor used to sit on had a sag of about 1" that leveled back out after its removal and replacement of the new LCD.The more compact LCD also takes up much less space on my desk so I have room for more junk food and empty coke cans... what a great bonus :)

Great Value
I thought this monitor would be too good to be true for the price. It is fast, clear and I have not touched a control since getting it out of the box. It has been a joy to play video games on. Its footprint is tiny and I really enjoy the increased desk space. The screen geometry seems perfect. I am using 1280 by 1024 resolution and have no problem seeing anything and I have "over 40" eye sight. I had to clean it and just used a dry cotton towel and it removed the dust in one pass. Excellent monitor for the price
I purchased a 213T to replace a three-year-old 181T.The 181T is still working fine (though it has some slightly noticeable burn-in).The 181T has an incredibly sharp picture (I work with text all day and I'm very fussy about monitors).I was dubious that the 213T could deliver the same picture quality with a 3" larger screen and priced hundreds less than I paid for the 181T.

I was pleasantly surprised.The 213T's picture is perfect.No dead pixels, extremely sharp, and colors that look even better than the 181T.Don't believe the other reviews that caution against using this monitor in analog mode.There is a perceptible difference between the digital and analog mode, but the analog picture is still of outstanding quality.I used analog mode for about a week before replacing my graphics card with a dual-DVI Matrox P650, and I could have lived with it, but I wanted both monitors running in digital mode.

Two noticeable differences between the 213T and the 181T:the 213T comes out of standby a lot faster (about 2 seconds instead of 5), and the fluid is much slower on the 213T.If I take a window with a dark blue background and white text, and drag it around on the 213T, the text smears to blue.There is almost no change in the text color on the 181T.This might be an issue for some people, but it isn't an issue with the way I use the monitor.

WOW! Beautiful, functional at a good price
Gorgeous image, rotation for LONG viewing with included PivotPro software, color/brightness correction for various settings (office lightings, home lightings, etc.) with included Natural Color software. Comes with VGA and DVI cables. Very pleased.

Not quite perfect, but very good
As all of the other reviews are stellar, I had to add my own cautions.

First, I am generally very happy with this monitor and highly recommend it for most uses.I primarily use this for stock charting software and it is excellent for this.I also am supplying a natural 1600x1200 res signal from my IBM t42 laptop so I am giving it as high a quality signal as possible.And the difference between a 21" and 20" screen is VERY usable!

But there are some issues that some of you might want to note:
*Sharpness:While the 213T is a 1600x1200 res monitor, it is clearly not as crisp and detailed as my 15" laptop, also a native 1600x1200 screen.There is a loss of some detail and an overall softness that would probably make a CAD/CAM or photo-junky frustrated at times.
*Getting the colors right:No problem getting things bright, but getting the colors to come close to that on my laptop or my desktop has been impossible.Photos that I know well simply look far too different on the Samsung and no amount of fussing with the monitor or the supplied software has been able to resolve this.Again, if you are a graphics or photo person, you might find this an issue.

As for me, I am perfectly happy since I bought this primarily to have a second monitor attached to my laptop for dual screen use with stock charts. And frankly a bit of color shift and a bit of softness is completely overshadowed by the huge picture and amount of 'stuff' that I can have active on the screen.Consider your needs and useage.This may be the perfect monitor for you as well.And comparitively very affordable, too!

very pleased
I ordered this monitor from tigerdirect.com with a new computer.I had originally ordered the 19" but was not pleased with the picture brightness. My salesperson recommended the SyncMaster 213t.It arrived today and I couldn't be more pleased.TigerDirect loaded the software and the cables were already connected to the monitor.So setup was a breeze.The first thing you notice is the SIZE.Fantastic.The letters are so very clear as compared to my 21" crt hitachi.The screen can be rotated to three positions and that is one great feature.To make it short, if you want a quality image and you want it large and you want the ability to rotate your screen from landscape to portrait, then look no further, BECAUSE THIS IS THE MONITOR YOU WANT.

Huge screen, sumptuous color, and rotates for full-page view
This large-screen (21") LCD monitor fully lives up to the top ratings awarded by both PC-World and Consumer Reports. The colors are breathtakingly realistic - better than the Trinitron CRT it replaced. The 1600x1200 pixel viewing area is huge - more than sufficient to give ample working room for image, tools and palettes in Photoshop. Not the least [in addition to the standard tilt, swivel and height adjustments] the screen rotates to a vertical position so that you can get a full-page view of a word-processing document, or a photo in portrait mode. And the Pivot Pro software is included in the package. Also included are two full-size cables: for connecting to either a standard VGA (analog) graphics adapter, or to a newer digital DVI card. The 25 msec refresh time might cause smearing when playing games (not tested), but otherwise the display is simply awesome and rock steady; I didn't see a bad pixel in the nearly 2 million pixels on board.

Installation is another story, however. The enclosed setup guide is virtually useless - not helped a bit by the unfathomably literal Korean translation. The complete guide is on the CD, and in handsome full color with animation yet. But what use would that be if you can't get the monitor to work in the first place? That said, installation from the CD went smoothly, yielding a great 1286x1024 image - but when I tried to get to the native 1600x1200 display setting, the monitor would not sync properly. After several hours of head-scratching and web searching I finally located the latest driver, and all is well at last. Still, too heavy a burden is placed on the end-user; wouldn't an old-fashioned phone call have been nice! State of the Art Monitor
I have had this monitor for several months now and I believe it to be the best computer investment I have made in years.

What I like:
-Thin bezel (frame around screen)
-Small footprint
-Generally sharp looking screen design
-Sharp image
-Easy to install and use
-Definitely puts less strain on my eyes than my old 21" CRT, I can spend hours in front of the PC.
-Last but not least the 3yrs warranty (where else can you get that?)

Disadvantages:
-The stand does not have much swiveling adjustments
-The stand cannot be adjusted vertically
-Some screen designs out there look more appealing but the 710n-2 surpasses them technologically. (See below)

LCD monitors have obvious advantages over CRT monitors:
-LCD monitors consume less power
-Do not produce electromagnetic radiation as CRTs do
-Do not flicker like CRTs
-Produce a sharper image (especially with text)
-Are light and slim in size
-Have a full viewable size

LCD monitors also have disadvantages compared to CRT monitors:
-LCD monitors do not show consistent brightness and color shades as your viewing angle shifts
-Are slower in responding to image changes wich means movies or games visual quality is affected. Choosing an LCD with a low response time should correct this issue however.

The technical specs of this monitor make it one of the best -if not the best- ones out there.
Please compare its technical specs, line to line, with the competition and see for yourself.

Here are a few hints:
-Dot pitch is the size of the individual pixels that make up the screen, the smaller the dot pitch, the better the details' quality.

Competition > 0.284mm

-Contrast ratio: This spec is really irrelevant; it measures the difference between the darkest and the lightest areas of a test screen. Above 300:1 is considered good.

-Viewing angle (Horizontal and Vertical): Not important, unless you intend to watch your monitor by sitting at an angle to it (i.e. presentations for a group). A bigger angle is a plus

-Response time: A hidden but revealing spec. It measures the response time to image changes, the smaller the response time the better off you are watching movies and playing games.

12MS Fast, Great LCD Monitor
I have had this unit for 3 months now and got it at a higher price. It is a great unit for almost anything I use including the games I play, photoshop, and excel stuff that I do. Samsung makes the best monitor out there since they are one of the largest display company in the world. I have read it that they only use exclusively Samsung panels that are the best in the world. Unlike Viewsonic that do not make their own products, I guess Samsung is getting the best panels for its branded monitors. I highly recommend this monitor.

Samsung makes some of the best flat panel monitors
I did alot of comparative shopping and watched LCD prices drop over the last few months.I got an excellent price on this monitor.My friend has a slightly older Samsung LCD and the clearity of the display impressed me.This monitor is no acception.It's stylish looking and doesn't take up alot of deskspace, but more importantly it has features to make it a worthwhile purchase.It's got a 12 ms response time, a 600:1 contrast ratio and 1280 x 1024 max resolution.Comparing this to my economy priced philips 17 in CRT (107s) is not even possible.I havent done any gaming with this monitor yet, but with 12 ms response time their should be no ghosting.Most LCDs are 25ms or 16ms, but Samsung provices 12 ms with this model.More of an issue for gamers, but certainly not a bad thing for the rest of us.DVDs look sharp and crisp.The adjustment menu allows for diff color modes, entertainment, internet, custom and a couple others.A useful feature as for typing I like to tone down my monitor's brightness to save my eyes.The menu selection keys are sort of hidden in the right hand lower corner, which although some people say is inconvenient, takes little getting used to.The menu is intuitive and easy to use.You also get 3 year parts and labor coverage + 3 months for returning your product registration.

The only cons I can think of are fairly superficial.The power cord is only partially hidden by the back part of the stand, while older samsung models mask the entire cord.The model is not available in silver, but the black is still really sharp looking.The stand is limited to tilting the monitor up or down.Some monitors on the market allow you to adjust height and swivel, for me this is not a concern as I wouldnt use this feature.

Great value large screen LCD TV - LTV-32W1
I spent several days looking at as many large screen TV's as I could find, mainly around the 25" - 40" size. I have had a Samsung 17" HDTV in the kitchen for some months and have a projector for watching movies, but wanted a good sized TV for the familly room. It was almost by chance that I came across the Westinghouse range of LCD TVs at Best Buy. Prices ranged from $1000 for 27" to $1700+ for 32". The range appears to have been introduced quite recently (early 2005?) and the clean, simple design was immediately appealing. The prices were all very keen - in most cases at least $2-300 less than comparable models from other manufacturers. The only manufacturer with noticeably better picture quality was Sharp. Their picture quality is superb!

My main requirement was for a good looking TV with the best possible picture quality for the price. I wasn't really interested in gimmicks like PIP (picture-in-picture / watching two video sources at the same time), and being able to feed in signals from multiple digital sources. (This model does support PIP as it happens, and also has a wide range of audio & video inputs, but it has only a single TV tuner) I DID want support for HDTV and connection to a PC.

I thought that the 27" model was outstanding value at just under $1000 from Best Buy, but the 32" LTV-32W1 struck me as much better value for $1400 from Electronics Express through Amazon. The picture quality is really good. I have seen many cheap flat-screen TV's that are just so fatiguing to watch. So far I have seen no strange blocky artifacts or other picture distortion. Personally, I found good quality LCD screens so much easier to watch than their plasma counterparts. The picture from LCDs seems clearer and less harsh than plasma. The internal cable-ready tuner is fine for basic low-res TV without the need for an additional cable box. One last point is that I was quite pleased with the sound from the built-in speakers. No, they are not hi-fi, but many of the models I auditionned sounded like tiny transistor radios from the 1970's!! The LTV-32W1
has - in my opinion - one the the better sound outputs from its built-in speakers, which was quite important for me as I did not want any more clutter and wires! I will probably add a small sub-woofer though to fill out the bottom-end.

All-in-all I am very pleased with this TV and would recommend it very highly.

Portrait Mode is Plus and Great for Movies
I bought this monitor after browsing monitors ranging in size of 17" to 21".The size is spectacular, although the price from a 19" to 20" to 21" is significant, so only get this one if you value those extra 1 or 2 inches or will outgrow one of the smaller sizes (note the resolution jump from 19" to 20" though).I was a bit nervous when I purchased this monitor because I wasn't sure if the extra few hundred were worth it, but I am very please so far.It is huge, sharp, switches to portrait mode (more convenient than you may think), and plays movies quite well.

The portrait mode is great for documents and surfing the web.I can view 1 1/2 pages of Word documents and search web pages faster.Be sure to get the software to switch your computer to portrait mode (I'm not sure if it usually comes with the monitor; I use PivotPro).I also sometimes do homework with as much viewing space of the document as a 17" monitor and still have a movie playing in the bottom quarter of the screen... one of the many conveniences of the portrait mode.Also, increase the sensitivity of your mouse (or get a mouse with more sensitivity) so scrolling across the screen isn't an inconvenience.

I watch movies quite frequently and, when viewing from 4' or more away, the only noticable differences from a TV is higher resolution in the monitor (pro) and very slight distortion with fast movements (con, but barely noticable).I haven't played games on this monitor (yet), so I cannot vouch for the performance there.

Overall, I am very pleased.Also, no dead pixels or blemishes (at least yet).I don't think I will ever outgrow this monitor; an increase in size would actually be an inconvenience for most of my uses because then there is too much to keep track of (only pros I can think of for a larger monitor would be dual document viewing and a larger screen for movies).I would highly recommend this monitor for anyone considering an 18" through 24" monitor!

Wonderful Monitor, I love the ability to rotate the Screen
I saw this monitor set up in a "Big Box" store when I was on vacation and after using it in the store for a while, ordered one sent to my local "Big box" after checking prices online.The small footprint, lack of heat thrown off by a CRT, crisp display (I use the DVI so I can't speak to analog issues, but it looked fine in the store) and ease of setup is all I could want.I went to PivotPro's website and D/L'ed a free upgrade and haven't had any problems with switching between landscape and portrait modes.

I find myself using the monitor in it's vertical portrait mode, except for gaming, as both web pages and documents usually view better this way.

Samsung 213T
I bought this monitor about 5 months ago now and love it. I have it coupled with a new Nvidia GeForce 6800 256 MB graphics card. For those of you who worry about "Ghosting" when game playing I have not seen it. Half life 2 and Doom 3 look truely amazing. With full resolution 1600x1200, colors are vibrant and blow away the normal "glass" monitor I had before. The monitor also pivots any way you can think of and comes with cool software that will keep everything legible no matter how the monitor is turned. The size is great and it's footprint is small.

Certainly Good Enoughand Weighs less than 40#
I think the reviews of this product are just plain picky.There is a point when lots more money will buy just a hair's worth improvement in performance and quality.The big remote ain't THAT big and doesn't get lost.The menu and set up are easy-easy-easy.The sound is just fine in my rather large room.

And to the reviewer who said the connections were impossible for him, my fingers are quite arthritic and it was fine. Because of the weight and the slimness, I was able to hold the TV at an angle or turn it to make the connections easily.

As for resolution, yes, regular tv isn't all that great, but I think it depends more on the quality of input.We compared resolutions using digital photos of various settings from a verrrry high end camera, the differences were very noticeable, and the highest resolution photos were just awesome.

I don't yet have a computer that can be hooked up so cannot comment, but I am tickled pink to have such a low weight, easy to move about, big screen TV for such a low price.I think it's a bargain.

A fantastic bargain
The Backstory: I wanted a 30" LCD and headed to my local Best Buy. The 3 models they had on display had picture quality that matched the price difference. The $2000 TV looked best; the Westinghouse, at $1100, looked horrible- colors were extreme, etc. I figured I would fiddle with the settings on the set, and sure enough the contrast was jacked up. A salesman quickly approached as I was tuning the contrast down, and quickly informed me that "they just plug the TV in straight out of the box, I shouldn't need to do that". After successfully completing my mission, I stepped back for another comparison, and voila, the Westinghouse was absolutely on par with the Sony. Conspiracy? You be the judge. I got lucky enough to score a flawless open box, bringing my price under $980.

The review: The TV comes with a set of 3' component and RCA cables, so if your receiver is going to be close enough to your TV, don't splurge on the monster cable.

This unit fits stably on my mantle above the fireplace. It looks spectacular, and the colors are brilliant and vibrant. Glare in my bright apartment is not a problem.

The speakers seem adequate, but of course you'll be hooking up your own. The menus on the set are extremely intuitive, and easy to figure out without having to read the instructions. The 3 aspect modes were not well documented; in order to see the difference I paused a DVD on a scenic shot, and then flipped between the modes, noting the image boundaries and cut-off or distortion.

The tv in-box was awkward for me to move up 3 flights of stairs on my own. The set itself is relatively light, and was easy enough for me to lift to the height of my mantle.

The best value in LCD TV's to date. Highly recommended.

A great deal, with a problem (and a simple workaround)
I bought this television at Best Buy, despite the fact that the picture quality was really terrible.I was visually comparing all the LCD TV sets they had for sale, and the Westinghouse was visibly showing some kind of refresh problem.It looked like the kind of visible refresh you would get on an extremely old laptop LCD (before TFT screens).I checked the specs and the Westinghouse TV claimed a 16ms refresh rate and an active matrix LCD screen.These are the same specs as my extremely lovely LCD computer monitor, which does not have a visible refresh.So either Best Buy's model was defective, or there was something else going on.I decided to hedge that Best Buy was sending a crummy signal to the TV, and bought it and took it home.

I unpacked the TV and hooked it up and turned it on, and was delighted to discover that the TV did not seem to have the visible refresh problem the one in the store had.I looked on the internet and discovered a couple of plausible culprits:1. This TV reacts badly to being hooked up to a signal splitter, and all TVs on sale at Best Buy are being fed signals that have been split many times.This degraded signal may cause the rolling visible refresh pattern.2.Westinghouse's own FAQ at http://westinghousedigital.com/support/faq.shtml describes the problem as being a "ground loop".Purchase a cheap 3 prong to 2 prong adaptor for the power cord.This will cut the loop and clear up the picture.We tried this and it worked!

I'm glad I took a chance on this TV, as the next competitor was $500 more expensive and suffered a bit from glare (it had a glossier screen).This TV is perfect for viewing even if the blinds in the living room are open.I especially like how it has inputs for VGA and DVI, so you can hook your computer up to it.The only real downside is that the inputs and outputs aren't very easy to get to, so be sure to have an extra person on hand to balance the TV while you try to fiddle with the stuff on the underside.

If you can't afford the absolute best, and you'd just like to settle for something adequate and reasonably priced that can do a lot of nice things, then go for this TV.

Exceptional 30" LCD TV at the most affordable price!
I got this TV from Best Buy (January 6, 2005) and it is performing exceptionally well...no complains. I have also upgraded to HDTV cable and the picture quality is unbelievable. Even the packaging is high qulity and flawless to protect the product during shipping...I guess it goes with the brand name and reputation of Westinghouse products. Some reviews regarding the remote control are agreeable as the remote is a bit large...but has no quality or engineering issues....in fact the larger remote may be useful to your specific needs. If you don't like the remote...I would recommend you to get a GE Univeral Remote from AMAZON.COM or Circuit City, which costs under $18 and is compatible with this model.

The 30" model was so hot at Best Buy that they sold out in just 7 days after the sale! Don't pay more than $1500 for the 30" Westinghouse LCD Model. Yes, that includes tax!

Do your home work well and invest in sensible products with good company reputation.

awesome tv for price
I bought this tv after extensive research on lcd's and plasmas in it's size range. I picked the westinghouse b/c of the price, as the specs were similar to those of the same size tv's by manufacturer's like sony, etc, that cost hundreds more. I got it at bestbuy for 1499. I've read some reviews that are not so good, but i don't understand what they were looking at. I am using a SA 4200HD box from cablevision. The HD programming looks amazing. Of course regular cable doesn't look so good, but that's the case with all lcd/plasma hdtv's. The real HD programming is beautiful though. I'm using monster component cables. The midgrade ones I guess that cost about 70 bucks. Not the most expensive and not the cheapest. I did notice a huge difference when compared to the cheap component cables cablevision provided. Great Tv. Great picture. wish there was more HD channels and programming though.

Happy with my purchase
I wasn't planning to buy a new monitor, but my Vivitron21 CRT finally gave out and I had to replace it. Friends who already have LCD monitors swear by them, so I checked around and eventually settled on the VP191B. I've had it about 2 weeks, and it has done everything well so far.

Because I do some editing of home video, I was a little concerned at setup because the monitor pivot software drivers are not Windows certified, at least for XP (the installation instructions tell you to agree to complete the install even if you get a warning saying it may not be safe-I'm docking one star for that). Happily, I have had no problems with Pinnacle Studio or Muvee AutoProducer - previewing and viewing seem to work fine.

One other minor complaint would be that the pivot software seems to slow the response time some when you right click the desktop to see the context menu - the various rotation options are now listed directly in that menu, which is convenient, but it takes a few extra seconds for the pop-up to appear (that doesn't sound like much until you're wondering why the cursor is stuck on the hourglass when it never was before).

Other comments would be in line with previous reviewers - bright clear picture, sweet spot in price vs. monitor size, convenient controls, etc. For viewing web pages and word processing documents, the rotating monitor works great. Of course it doesn't really help when you're editing widescreen video! And it can be confusing to the next person if you leave the monitor rotated - the last rotation setting is retained, but it doesn't take effect immediately at boot-up, so start-up images appear rotated.

Still, these seem like small quibbles with what has otherwise been a satisfying purchase. I would certainly recommend it for the performance and the size convenience if you're in the market for a new monitor and don't want to drop a grand or more on a larger monitor but are willing to spend the extra for the lighter weight and the small form factor.

What a View (Sonic!)
These are excellent LCD monitors. Excellent picture quality.
I purchased them for use in a two monitor set-up for video editing. The "thin edge" design lends itself well to this configuration. You can really get them nice and close together...giving the set-up more of a seamless look. The monitors are fairly light and take up very little space. Coming from a much larger...and heavier CRT monitor this is a welcome change. Set up is quick with the included software. I did have an issue matching the two monitors...left one seemed sharper and more brilliant than the right...but Amazon quickly sent a replacement. I was very impressed at the customer service in this case.
Be sure to check settings in your video card as this will contain much more user settings than the ViewSonics onscreen display offers. This may help clear any issues for proper set-up.

Very surprised, very pleased!!
A year ago I knew nothing about PC'ing, but I feel that I have advanced to the point to where I needed a better and bigger monitor. In this monitor you get all that and a whole lot more, a lot of the features I have not used yet but I know with this monitor that it gives me room to grow. The support that I have received from Amazon and Viewsonic has been fantastic!! This is one of the best decisions I have made lately!!!

HOLY COW!
(For some reason this review got put under the VP912b model, so I had to copy and paste it back under this model where it belongs.)

It took a long time for me to overcome my reluctance about spending over five hundred dollars for a monitor when my whole Dell PC cost about the same, but now that I have it I couldn't be any happier.

This Viewsonic is bright and sharp, text very clear, contrast is excellent but gentle on the eyes, photos are vibrant yet detailed.

Best of all, it pivots ninety degrees...allowing me to view entire Web and document pages without having to scroll. Mama mia, this feature is simply PRICELESS! Especially for someone like me who works with text docs, spreadsheets and web pages all the time. It makes me chuckle when I recall the days (just a couple of years ago) when I would've had to shell out well over twelve hundred dollars to get some massive vertical CRT tube to have that capability.

Setup was quick and painless out of the box, though I did have to manually install the monitor drivers---probably a quirk of Windows XP, but the instructions the installer wizard provided were excellent so that was a snap. The Pivot Point software which flips the display image was even easier to install, took all of about 3 minutes.

And look, Ma---no dead pixels either! Probably because of the nice beefy packaging it came in...I noticed during my shopping that the cheaper makes often come in smaller boxes for the same screen size.

Even though this monitor is listed as having only 250 cd/m brightness, one of the first things I did when I installed it was REDUCE the brightness setting, from the default 90% down to just over 30%! Strangely enough, when I was testing out different monitors in stores which also were rated for 250 cd/m (Samsung, Acer, NEC, Sony, Envision, Provision, etc.) the Viewsonic (and it was the lower end VX-910 model) had by far the brightest picture. Which to me suggests that a lot of LCD manfufacturers must be fudging their numbers big time!

I guess what people say about Viewsonics is pretty much dead on: these are beautiful monitors, very easy to use, and they easily blow away higher priced competitors like Sony.

Great entry level lcd HD tv
The picture is awesome ! I have had this tv about 2 weeks and there is only 1 real negative. The bad is there is NO remote code for this tv. I called tech support and they could not give me any code. I got a Samsung T-451 HD tuner hooked up those stupid rabbit ears and viola I had HD tv. I was impressed even though it was 720p.I use this tv as my computer monitor set at 1024x768 and it looks great. The whole screen is filled up and it doesn't look distorted. I had read some negative reviews about the sound on this tv, but the sound is awesome. It has 2-way speakers and I only turn the sound up to about 1/4 volume and it is great. The inputs are broken up into two banks one digital and one analog. You can't put two digital inputs in the main & pip and vice versa, but you can 1 analog & 1 digital.
You can watch SAT thru comp. or s-vid and put the computer in PIP but only if you have eyes of a hawk since the pip is about 7" diag. I ordered a dvi-d cable for the hd tuner to see if the picture is any better in HDTV than from using the 15pin d-sub computer cable. There is quite a bit of heat coming from the front of the screen but I think that is normal. A friend reccommended that I buy a UPS with AVR and I did for precautionary reasons ( Belkin F6C550-AVR ). Love it
After reading the reviews from other purchaser of this monitor, i was skeptical about it, then i priced others and that is what decided it for me...i am very pleased with this, granted the speakers leave alot to be desired but i wasn't getting this for the speakers anyway. For the price i am pleased with the brightness, and no dead pixels on mine.....and it takes up alot less space than the old kind. If you are looking for speakers...go buy speakers, if you are looking for a good quality flat screen monitor at a good price then you have found it.

Performance for price better than expected
Considering that I paid only $150 for this (after rebate), I cannot complain too much about the 1 dead pixel near the edge of the screen.You get what you pay for, and I wanted a low price LCD.I am not going to send mine back since I can live with one dead pixel.If this would bother you, you might want to stay away from this brand since dead pixels appear to be pretty common.And yes, the built in speakers are very weak and require amplification of some sort to be useful.Otherwise, colors and response time seem to be fine for my needs, but I am not a gamer.

One word to describe this LCD:VALUE
There is no sense in comparing this LCD with higher end models because frankly it doesn't stand a chance. However, this LCD screams value in the sense that for well under $200 you can ditch that old CRT and update your desktop to 21st Century Standards.

Brightness is excellent. No dead Pixels. Very clear and easy to read. Graphics look fantastic. Great looks. Awesome price.

An excellent Flat-Panel Monitor!
Dell is a trusted name in the industry and after we've used Dell computers since the early 90s, the top of the line Dells are the best performing and most reliable PCs out there, which are also competitively priced. This 19" Ultrasharp Flat-Panel monitor with its thin frame around it is a true 19" inch. It is crisp with no glare even in daylight -- I'm really positively surprised. As I'm spending 10-12 hours per day in front of the screen, staring at it, this Flat Panel works extremely well and easy on my eyes -- no more tears, etc. Its also light weight and it seems very sturdy with all kinds of adjustment features (incl. tilting in virtually all directions) to place it as comfortable as possible right where you want it. The colors are also really superb. Like with everything else we've researched a lot of monitors before we bought this Dell 1905fp UltraSharp and it seems to be the best unit for the money. No Regrets Buying This One
I'm a professional Video Editor and do some Graphic Design on the side. I started to need a new monitor when my flat screen CRT finally started to loose enough contrast that I needed a replacement.

Looking around and learning as much as I could about LCD's (my only other real experience with an LCD is with my Laptop's which is beautiful) I determined that I needed a monitor that can do 1600x1200 natively, has a good refresh rate and decent contrast. It's hard to find an LCD that has all of those but the Viewsonic VP201b comes very very close.

The image quality out of the box is good but you will need to calibrate it (I use a Mac so I used it's built in calibration to create and set a new color profile) as the default color profile is somewhat off. Once I calibrated it's brightness, contrast and color(s) it's absolutely beautiful. I haven't noticed one dead or stuck pixel yet even after checking with several full screen single color images.

You'll also need to set your font smoothing style if you're on a Mac under System Prefs.

The contrast is great (anything's great compared to my old CRT's contrast) but I do wish it was a touch higher. I think few people would complain about the contrast though as it does look fantastic. It's wonderful to have pure deep blacks and bright whites again on my screen. Brightness is great too.

Looking very closely comparing text, straight lines and other common examples it's just about as good or equal to my TiBook's screen. There's a lot of detail.

I have no problems so far with the refresh rate, DVD's, Games and video editing look great. Also the viewing angle seems excellent.

The only image quality issue (aside from really needing to calibrate it out of the box) is that there is a "Fine Tune" setting in the onscreen menu you bring up by hitting the "1" key then going under "Manual Image Adjust". It's a bit hard to describe but there's a VERY slight blurring of text either running down the center of the screen or after you adjust Fine Tune a bit on both sides leaving the center crisp and sharp. It's so slight I can live with it as I only notice it on text and adjusting the Fine Tune setting will eliminate most of it. Still it's something to look for (and something you can adjust) in a store if you happen to see one on a shelf before you buy it. (Make sure it's in it's native 1600x1200 resolution!)

In the box you get a package of software and a manual which I didn't open because the software is for rotating the display for portrait mode which Mac OS X doesn't support because of Viewsonic's old drivers. But, keep in mind that if you use a PC or an older version of Mac OS you can rotate the monitor.

You get an RGB video cable, a DVI cable (the monitor has both inputs), a power cord and a USB cable because the monitor is also a 4 port USB hub. As of this review I have usb stuff plugged into it but haven't tried them but I assume it's a powered USB hub.

At this low price there's really no reason not to check it out. I'm very happy with it but I've only had it a few days so far.

Outstanding Flat-Panel for Screen-Real-Estate-Hungry Users
If you're willing to put in some time and effort adjusting a plethora of settings, this is a wonderful piece of hardware. It does both the big and important things and the little details well:

- Image quality: Outstanding
- Mechanical design: Outstanding

Installation of the hardware was easy: Just connect the power cord (no power "brick" required) and the video cable supported by your video card (old-style VGA or LCD-specific DVI--both are included with the display). Turn the power on. Be sure to turn on the "hard" power switch adjacent to the power cord connection on the back panel as well as the front-panel power button (the right-most of the five front-panel buttons).

Upon initial connection, I was prepared to be greeted with blank or otherwise non-functioning display requiring troubleshooting to rectify, but the VP201b adapted instantly to the 1280x1024 / 60Hz setting that was in force on my video card. I saw a perfectly legible, if non-ideal display (see below for the details of perfecting the display). There were no "dead" pixels in evidence, the monitor displayed a momentary note of the fact that I was not using it in its optimal mode and indicated which input is active (VGA, in my case) and the precise resolution and timing settings in effect.

New owners might experience an initial period of buyers remorse, especially if they're switching from a lower-resolution setup. When first powered on in such a situation, the display will adapt to such settings, but this produces distinctly sub-optimal results.

The first thing the new owner must do is set their video card parameters to the display's native resolution of 1600x1200.

Following this comes the possibly more arduous task of finding appropriate font settings both system-wide and application-specific. It's likely that font selection and sizes and other text-related settings that worked well for a CRT will produce poor results with the VP201b. Do not despair! Good font display quality is eminently possible, it just takes some experimentation.

Be sure to enable any available LCD-specific font display technology. There are at least two places for many users to do this:

- ClearType (Windows). Search the Windows on-line help for this phrase and you'll find straightforward and easy-to-follow instructions for enabling and fine-tuning this feature.

- CoolType (Adobe products). Adobe software performs its font rendering internally, and thus does not automatically benefit from ClearType being enabled in the operating system. For the current (version 7.0) Adobe Reader, use the Preferences command in the Edit menu, select the "Page Display" settings and check the "Use CoolType" box.

- Users of some Linux systems may have the counterpart to ClearType, too (Adobe Reader 7.0 for Linux includes CoolType, too), under the generic and descriptive, if cryptic, title of "sub-pixel hinting." In SuSE Linux, the KDE Control Center's Font configuration panel (under Appearance and Themes) includes an anti-aliasing enable check-box and a "Configure..." button that brings up the dialog in which you can enable the sub-pixel hinting function. Choose the "RGB" option and "Full" hinting.


Exploring the display's own configurations through its on-screen display is also recommended. At a minimum, users should be familiar with adjusting the brightness and contrast controls, since the VP201b can produce such a bright display that it can be uncomfortable to use in low-light settings.

The "Fine tuning" setting also has a dramatic effect on display quality. Using the on-screen display, enter the "Manual Image Adjust" section and select "Fine Tune." In the default configuration, the setting "thermometer" will be at the left-most position. Place one figer on the up-arrow button and another on the down-arrow button and with fine detail displayed (text works well), watch the screen closely as you hold down the up and down buttons. I won't try to describe the visual effect, but it is plainly visible. Choose a setting that you find optimal.

Users with demanding imaging needs will probably want to know that the displays color temperature can be adjusted, either by selecting one of the built-in values (9300, 6500, 5400, 6000 and sRGB) or in a free-form mode where each of the red, green and blue relative kevels can be adjusted.


Summary
This spacious and elegantly designed flat-panel display produces outstanding results, provided you're willing to exercise control over the various options and parameters that bear on display quality. The investment in time spent doing this fine-tuning is well worth it to get the most from the display.

As a software engineer, I hold to the ideal that the kind of painstaking exploration of options I went through to get the most from this hardware should not be necessary, so while intrinsically I'd give the product five stars, I'm only awarding four, in the hopes that all the relevant parties will take the next step and obviate all the manual adjustments, at least for most users.

great monitor no problems
I recently purchased this monitor and it was everything I hoped it would be. No stuck pixels or other problems. Looks better than my friend's 20" UltraSharp Dell. Can't wait to buy another one. Little pricey though.

Awesome product!
Having used nothing but CRT's in the past (my previous monitor being a sweet NEC 22") I was a little nervous about taking the LCD plunge at this point. Mostly because I do a lot of gaming (Trying to finish up Doom 3 presently) I was always afraid of the "ghosting" effect not seen with CRT's. Earlier and some of the newer (cheaper) LCD's just didn't refresh the screen fast enough for fast paced gaming so I always shied away from them.

But after seeing some other users opinions of this product on gaming boards and, having a friend who was interested in purchasing by NEC, I bit the bullet and ordered this Viewsonic. The main selling point being its 16ms response time (should have minimal to no ghosting hopefully) and a 1600x1200 native resolution. Waiting for the unit to be delivered I was a little nervous that I might have made the wrong decision and would have to go back to a CRT....

Well upon setting things up and firing up XP on this screen for the first time ... I was BLOWN AWAY. Screen shots don't do it justice. Everything is bright and text is razor sharp right out to the corners. Kudo's to Viewsonics quality control. NO dead or stuck pixels that I can see. Unfortunately another reviewer I saw on here had them, maybe just bad luck or Viewsonic improved quality since this products rollout. Colors looked awesome. And NO ghosting playing Doom 3 that I have seen so far, or maybe I just don't notice it. Anyway at this point, using this monitor for a few days now, I am MORE than happy with my purchase.

However I must point out that it does have a different "look" coming from a CRT. It will make bad images stand out more. The screen has a bit of the "looking thru a screendoor" effect I have seen posted in other reviews. Maybe some people can't get used to this over a CRT or it is more pronounced on a bigger screen such as this but I've had absolutely no problem with it bothering me thus far. I was ALWAYS bothered by a CRT's lack of focusing towards the corners, and the lack of brightness being even across the screen, even on my NEC somewhat. Nothing of that I see now.

It is always best to try and see a monitor on display in a store being that it is a subjective purchase (although I didn't find any close by selling this model). Anyway if you can't, are finally in the market for an LCD, are willing to order blind online like me, and can shell out a little extra $$$$ for a quality product, I HIGHLY recommend the VP201B or S (the silver color model).

My First LCD
I'm a gamer and always thought that CRT was the way to go for gaming, but after taking the jump up to the VP201b, it changed my way of thinking. The colors are bright and really stand out, there's no ghosting at all in gaming, and there's no dead pixels.

I highly recommend this monitor. The only problem that I have is the fact that I didn't realize that with it's aspect ratio, the monitor recommends that you use a 1600X1200 resolution and if you use anything else, the picture quality isn't as good while web browsing, however it's great for gaming. Okay, but...
This was my 2nd LCD TV I have bought.The TV comes with many cables so you don't need to buy any.The picture quality is fair.In my opinion it is too, too bright.I noticed on basketball games and hockey games that the playing surface made the whole picture lighter.I tried to adjust it with a video calibration disc but I could not get it to improve.I also didn't like the MS response time of 30mm is way to slow.I f you are watching and active program, sporting event, or news with moving banner at the bottom of the screen you will notice how distorted it will look.

Very Good VALUE and Very Few Complaints
The first thing that struck me when I opened the box was the vast amount of cables that come with the TV. There was at least fifty dollars of cables alone included. I was able to easily plug in the TV according to the user's manual and get it on and working within minutes. The image is very bright and the colors are very good out of the box, and are adjustable to be even better. The outer appearance of the television is very appealing. Compared to its competitors, the SVA is much more attractive, it looks exactly like the first customer image. At first, I was disappointed with the dullness of the screen, however, that is fully adjustable to make for a fairly sharp image that I was pleased with. The first real problem that I encountered was mounting the television on the wall. It requires a VESA standard mount, which was not made entirely, clear in the manual. The manual, by the way was surprisingly weak in its information. And my other complaint with the TV is its lack of features, it does have CC and V-chip control but I was hoping for more features from such an expensive TV. However, some people might appreciate its ease of use without the confusing controls of more expensive TVs. Some of the TV's most pleasing aspects were the fact that it makes no high pitched noise when turned on, the image is sharp, bright, and clear, and that the TV is very attractive in its outer styling. Overall however, I was disappointed with the fact that it did not come with a wall mount, that the power adapter is big and bulky when it should have been built in, and that the resolution is too low to display a computer screen over 800x600 even with the sharpness control. Overall, I think that SVA provides an OUTSTANDING value when similar looking and similar qualified Sharp and Toshiba TVs are going for more than twice the money. I would definitely purchase this TV again, without regrets, if I were in the 20" LCD market.

SVA VR-20 or SVA VR-20CG
The unit pictured on Amazon as of this writing is the SVA VR-20CG. The one Justin got (see previous review), and the one that should be pictured here, is the SVA VR-20.They are exactly the same unit except for styling.

I opted for the SVA VR-20CG because it looked a bit different than all the other LCD TVs out there.Very nice picture and overall great value.No problem hooking up progressive scan DVD player/recorder to it and it looks great in the bedroom.

You should note that SVA Group is a very reputable company.I went to their website and called tech support before I purchased the unit to ask some general questions.The company's US headquarters are in Southern California and the technician I spoke to was in Southern California and was extremely helpful answering my questions.

A great number of features in a small space
This is a great TV and a great unit and looks great.I only have a couple of concerns for those looking to order this.The picture that Amazon has up as of 9/14/04 is not correct. Also between the time I ordered this and received it, the price on Amazon jumped up about $100.I'm not sure if they changed the styling and that is the difference, but at any rate I am very happy since I ended up with a TV priced $100 more than I paid for it and since the styling of the one I got is better than the picture.The model I was shipped does not have the gray plastic molding on the sides, the holes for the speakers are smaller and more numerous it is also shaped more like a picture frame and the controls are at the bottom center instead of on the upper right.One thing to note is that while you can use a VESA standard mounting plate to mount it to a wall or use the included stand, the TV also has two key-hole screw slot mounting holes built into the back of the case so that it can be hung directly onto a wall like a picture.The unit came with probably about $100 worth of cables. Including component video RCA cable set, RGB (VGA) cable, 3 composite video RCA cable sets, S-Video cable, 1/8 Audio cable. Apple 23" Cimema Display HD - No Silver lining
In short I returned my 23" Apple Cinema Display and got back the 20" Apple Cinema display I had bought the day before.The 20" was so good, so I reasoned - wow, go get the 23" it will be even better - wrong.The 23" Apple Cinema Display did actually run under Windows XP but the color fidelity was 0/10.It is almost as if the 23" display is built at a lower standard, or that there is no Quality assurance with this product. This was due to 3 things. 1) a pink color cast to all neutral grey/white areas. 2) A noticeable squeeze effect at the edges where the display looked like it an LCD being squashed.In these edge areas the color of white or grey changed to green and was darker.I also noticed a minor shift in hue on many of the grey pixels across the screen from left to right edges.3) A noticeable blur compared to the 20".

My work station area is a mixed Mac/PC affair to maximize productivity and cross platform work.I already run a first generation polycarbonate style 23" Cinema HD for OSX - 2 years now with no drama.I use the PC in Photoshop and wanted a top quality display for scanning Velvia and manipulating large files of 60Mb or more with quick response.I installed a new silver 20" Apple Cinema display to run under Windows XP SP2 using an ATI Sapphire Radeon 9600XT Atlantis 256Mb graphics card and an ASUS A7V8X mainboard.It is a good card for the 20" and the 23" Apple Cinema Displays.The Asus BIOS had to be set to activate the AGP 8x first.The only fault with this combination was that during a hot-restart, the display would remain off (black) and I had to shut down first, then start.Once the display was in this "apple sleep mode - cannot be woken by XP" I could not tell where the XP launch was at and after pressing the restart switch the BIOS would halt at the error report page (I was guessing, the Cinema display was black) so it required a full power-off - disconnect the apple display from the PC card and then start everything again.Otherwise the results were 5 star for the 20" with excellent color accuracy and evenness, brightness and sharpness.I am very experienced with color accuracy in Photoshop and usually have a neutral desktop background so as not to bias any colors which appear on screen around the Photoshop scans I am working on.I found under windows XP that the Adobe gamma panel was not as good as the ATI color panel (right click desktop/properties/settings/advanced/color) where I could make more precise corrections to the lower/mid/upper ranges of the gamma curve by eye.So far the 20" Apple Cinema display was fantastic and I was again marveling at how well Apple engineers can build or subcontract others to built their gear.Time to rush back to the store and get the BIG brother.Wrong - trouble came to town.See 1/2/3 above.I thought the problem was the Ati 9600XT card - so I switched over the display to run as a second monitor on my Mac Ati9000.So now I had the two 23" displays running side by side, one brand new and silver and the other two years old with 60 hours a week under the hood -that's a lot of hours.Well it was then I knew that the NEW 23" Apple Cinema Display was going straight back to the store.It seems obvious that the display was being squashed at the edges thereby changing the colors in a kind of Newton Ring effect you get with a cheap digital watch.

So I am back using the 20" Apple Cinema Display under Windows XP and all is well - 10/10.This is a perfect way to make Windows XP feel like a friend, even when running right next to my old 23" HD in OSX 10.3.By the way the Ati 9600XT 256Mb is very fast in 2D using Photoshop CS.My warning to buyers of the 23" Apple Cinema Display is that you should be very careful.Don't be fooled by the default blue desktop and fancy visuals they run in the retail environment.Check the product in store in a cool and calm way.Open an Application that uses white/grey like Safari and go to google.com.Set the screen to full width, then check out the fidelity of the grey/white at the edges.Interestingly when I reported this problem to the store they did not even question the fault, or open the box, the guy looked a bit sheepish -mumbled some thing which was hard to hear.It sounded like "yeah we have had this problem before".

Beware of this product for now (20" or 30" displays are OK)
I have been researching this display on various web sites. It's a beautiful display, but a multitude of people -- on CNET, Amazon, and even the Apple web site's forums -- reported color problems commonly described as "pink casting." The problem is described as pink colors or bars on the sides of the screen, and it does not go away.

One user in the Apple discussion forum, for instance, told of an experience in which their facility purchased ten of these displays. All of them had the same pink casting problem. Those are pretty bad odds.

I should note, by the way, that supposedly this problem does not exist with the 20" or 30" Apple Cinema Displays.

After this research, my decision not to purchase was clinched for me today: I phoned my local Apple store and told an employee of my concern. The employee then put me on hold, spoke to one of Apple's so-called "Geniuses," and returned to the phone to tell me that the Genius said that this is a known problem and that I should probably avoid purchasing the display for now. (He seemed a little embarrassed about telling me this, but told me he wanted to be completely honest with me.) He added that they haven't seen this issue with the 20" or 30" displays.

The strange thing about all of this is that the Apple web site is still selling these displays -- no mention of the pink color casting. But do yourself a favor and check the online forums.

Check the return policy on this...
Easily one of the best displays I've ever seen! Unfortunately I've got the color consistency problems, even after Apple has taken the display back for repair.

Make sure that you can return the monitor if you experience these problems as Apple does not yet acknowledge the color problems with this model exist!

My Cinema Display is Gorgeous
I've had my 23 inch Apple Cinema Display for about a month.It was easy to install to my Mac G5.I profiled the monitor using Gretag Macbeth Eye One. The colors are stunning and my photographic prints look like they do on the screen.Watching DVDs is an amazing experience.Especially beautiful is the digitally remastered Star Wars trilogy and Finding Nemo.The monitor is expensive but competitively priced and stunningly beautiful.The colors on my monitor are accurate.No off colors as reported by others on mine.

It's also easy to have 3 or 4 windows open at the same time.I'm a happy customer.

I have had mine for a month and it has been near perfect right out of the box. Only very subtle uneven backlighting in the lower left corner. Bright, sharp and beautiful. I'm a graphics pro and work all day in Photoshop and Illustrator and this is the best monitor I have ever seen.

Superb Monitor Especially For Graphics Work
I own a graphic design business and we just recently purchased 4 of the 243T Samsung 24 inch flat panel monitors. We can just say this, this is by far the best monitor we have ever used.We cannot find anything wrong with it at all. We can highy recommened it.PSwe had tried the Apple 23 inch and while it was very good, in our unanimous opinion, the Samsung still viewed its colors, text and over all picture quality the best.

Buyer beware
Failed after three weeks.The power mechanism appears to be faulty, and the unit will no longer turn on.The monitor was connected to an expensive surge protector, so a surge did not cause the failure.Purchased through Amazon and Tiger Direct.The monitor looked very nice until it failed, so if you want to take a chance, you will enjoy using it. Hopefully, Amazon and Tiger Direct will honor their guarantee and replace the monitor.

I'm visually impaired, so I need a large, crisp monitor that's flicker free.When I started looking, the choice was between the Sony and the Apple 23" monitor.While I thought the Apple's case, etc. was more durable, I chose the Sony because the contrast ratio was 500:1 as opposed to 400:1 for the Apple.

Letters and graphics are crisp.I needed to find drivers to make the aspect ratio more correct on my screen.Type tends to spread out more with the wider aspect screens, which makes it hard to read.

Overall. a good choice, I just wish I had not paid so much for it.

Great Gaming/General Computer Monitor
This is probably the greatest gaming LCD Monitor that I've seen.I have not yet installed EQ2, but WoW runs great and smooth even at 1920x1200 with a 3.4Ghz processor...I would highly recommend this for the purpose of programming, development, business work, and games.

The star trekish buttons in the front really adds a nice touch!Even though it took me a while to figure out how to turn it on, haha.

No matter, great job Sony!It's to be loved!

Uneven Color
I purchased this monitor after hearing reports about color problems with Apple Cinema Displays. I was dismayed to see a pinkish tint on the Sony as well. It was most noticeable viewing gray Web pages--it looked like there was blush in one corner. Presumably Sony and Apple use the same LCD manufacturer. I returned this monitor and purchased a smaller one without any color problems.

First impressions ...
When I started looking to purchase a large monitor I ready to get the new Apple 23" monitor for my PC however there have been so many posts about the pink and yellow hues, plus complaints about the 1 year Apple warranty versus 3 years for the Sony and since I have had 2 different Sony monitors in the past and was very happy with them , I decided to get with the Sony and ordered it from Amazon.com. To start I like to say that I am very impressed with the service at Amazon.

Here are some impressions and a strange problem I had to begin with:
The first monitor had something stuck between the clear coating and the LCD screen. It was either a small piece if hair or dust, a very small one however very annoying and definitely something that must have happened during the manufacturing so I called Amazon and the monitor was replaced immediately. I did not even try to change the resolution on the first one read on ...
The replacement monitor was perfect however it would not display 1920 x 1200 resolution using the DVI connection.I could get 1920 x 1200 only by using the VGA connection however the image quality is definitely mediocre under VGA and at close to $2000 I want great, not good!My video card is the NVIDIA 5700 Ultra with 128 MB Ram.I spend quite a bit of time with Sony and NVIDIA support removing and reinstalling drivers, the card, changing settings, editing the .inf files and so on. Finally was told (after being elevated to secondary tech support) that this is a native DVI problem, it is not fixable and if I wanted 1920 x 1200 I had to settle for the VGA connection and "live with it!"
Before giving up all together I decided to try something else and borrowed a friend's new ATI Radeon 9600 XT card. Well, as soon as I installed it I was able to change the resolution immediately to 1920x 1200 without a hitch!The specs between the ATI and NVIDIA are similar so I do not understand what the problem is but be prepared that if you experience the same problem you may need to purchase a new video card.

Now the problem I am facing is that after a couple of days that pink hue appeared especially around bold letters in white or grey background and this is the problem many have been complaining about with the Apple 23" monitors. It is not bad however it is there and no matter how many adjustments I have made, it refuses to go away. Many users might not even notice or not pay attention to it however if you do photography, or work on large spreadsheets it might bother you.
At this point I have been using the monitor for a week and unless I somehow convince myself within the next couple of days that I can live with it, I am afraid I shall return the monitor even though I think this is a great looking and performing piece of equipement.



Here is an update of my review above:
After a bit of trial and error I was able to solve the pink outline around the letters by choosing new settings in the Clear Type and by changing those the letters are now crisp and clear.
Since placing a url in the review is not allowed you can search for "Microsoft Clear Type" and then experiment with the different settings.
Another way to solve the red shade around the fonts is by going to My computer/properties/advanced/visual effects and clear the button "smooth edges on screen fonts' However even though the setting gets rid of the red, it is not as good as changing the clear type because the fonts are not as sharp.
I am very happy with the monitor now and would highly recommend it.

Great Monitor for Gaming
No Ghosting, extremely fast rate 8ms (almost unbelievable, but I am yet to experience a single ghosting incident while gaming or watching movies). Very good picture and very good design.

My only problem is that it is not made solid, and while punching your LCD screen should never be a habit, I still fear it will fall or break. That beings said, the base is very stable, and the chances of the LCD dropping off your desk is highly unlikely if even possible. Overall an excellent product well worth the price.

Great looking, Super fast
I have just upgraded from alow budget17 in LCD from NEC/Mitsubishi. I upgraded for the bigger screen but wow! The picture quality and speed is nothin less than amazing. I felt it was a little pricey but the fellows at the store where I bought it said that for gaming, video, DVD movies and other things I do, this is a must. I am pleased to say that they where 100% correct. This monitor is more than I bargained for. Great response time 8ns and 700:1. seeing is believing, worth every dime. I am very pleased.

Doesn't beat my old 17" crt
I know it's comparing apples to oranges but the Samsung 930B I just bought can't compete with my old 17" KDS Avitron CRT.

For DVD viewing it's black is more a dark grey than black. Watching the opening dark scene of The Matrix shows up the washed-out look of the image. That said, I don't see any ghosting of fast moving objects like I've noticed on older laptop displays so the 8ms response time must help.

For text it's TOO bright. I used to keep my KDS at brightness 60, contrast 20 when looking at text. Even at brightness 0, contrast 0 the Samsung still burns my eyes. I had to change my Radeon AIW's video card brightness from its default "middle" setting to almost all the way to the left to approximate the same look.

It's brightness is uneven. You can see a definite darkening of the corners/edges of the screen. Viewing position is crucial despite the 170 degree claim. Slightly moving my head causes noticeable (but tolerable) brightness changes in areas of the screen.

It'd be nice if the all of the MagicBright brightness/contrast settings were user-definable instead of just the Custom option.

The MagicTune 3.6 software causes a type of system lockup on Windows XP Home I haven't seen before. The mouse moves, and the capslock light still correctly changes, but mouse clicks are completely ignored, and Ctl+Alt+Delete no longer brings up the Task Manager. I have to hold in the power button and turn off my machine to regain control. I can use MagicTune to see current monitor settings but as soon as I change, for example, the brightness using the mouse... Oooops!

I used to velcro my 5.1 sound system's center speaker to the top of my CRT. Given the thinness of the Samsung that no longer will work. So I am looking at getting some sort of open-base monitor stand (like the Kensington 21in Monitor Supershelf).

The stand doesn't allow height adjustments like some other lcd stands do. I currently have the monitor sitting on top of two books, but am looking at a Ergotron Neo-flex stand (http://www.ergotron.com/3_products/flat_panel/neoFlex-DS/default.asp)

Bottom line: I like the 19" Samsung 930B enough to keep it rather than getting another 17" CRT (a 19" CRT was never an option due to space & weight considerations)... but I still miss the display quality of my old KDS.

Very Impressive
I got this monitor to replace a 17inch Sony LCD.My first impression was wow.I did not think that the improvement would be so big, the color's seem more life like and simply look amazing.Once you work on a 19inch LCD you will never be able to go back to a smaller size.The picture on this Smasung is outstanding and in games it is simply beautiful. I have worked with 19inch LCD's where they were slow in response time, this is defffinatley not one of those. One thing i should point out is that this monitor does have a DVI port on it, however it does not come with a DVI cable, avg price of a DVI cable can be around $30-$100 which blew me away. Ideal upgrade
I'd noticed Viewsonic monitors at AV trade shows (I'm in the biz, but the audio end) and I've always been impressed with the sharpness, clarity and colors.

Viewsonics were list-toppers when my 3-year-old Philips 15-incher started to flicker. At this price, I figured I couldn't go wrong.And I didn't.No pixel problems, but apparently everybody has solved that glitch.Color and clarity everything I'd expected.Photo slide shows are a wonder.You do have to turn the brightness and contrast down for text, however.They have both cranked to the max as default.Tone it down a bit and you'll be a happy camper.

Flawless.
It has no pixel issues. It warms up quickly. I have only one problem with it, and it's a design choice. When you first start the monitor, unless your resolution is on the highest, it produces a blue box in the center of the screen for about 5 seconds to tell you to increase your resolution. I find that annoying since I can't increase the resolution on my Suse box. Otherwise, it's simply a solid product.

Great Monitor
This is a really great monitor. It worked right out of the box, with no problems. I once turned it on and got a bit worried when I saw streaks of blurry columns going down the screen. It turned out that a simple hit on the "auto adjust" button is the cure. I actually have not used the auto adjust since.

It works great at its 1280 x 1024 high resolution setting, if you use it at a lower setting it is not as nice. If the highest setting is a problem because the fonts or icons are too small, just use large icons and increase the font size, it worked for me!

ViewSonic has proven itself as a good monitor building company, we have used tons of them at my workplace without any problem (no, I don't work for them!) They have my full recommendation

Extremely poor quality
I purchased this monitor with a HP desktop on the 3rd of May 2004. 13 months and 1 day later, on the 4th of June 2005, the monitor screen would go black, but the power button would remain lit. To get it to work again, you would have to turn it off and turn it back on. However, this problem re-occurs again around 10 seconds later, rendering the monitor useless. Designed obsolescene. Isn't it fantastic?

good monitor for those who like seeing black
Great. I've had this monitor for just about a year and suddenly thescreen goes black for no reason.Press the button and the screen will work for another 8 seconds, then go black suddenly. Press it off, press it on, it'll work for 8 seconds.

Apparently from forums i have read, a vast majority of other owners have this monitor problem, and unfortunately there's no class action suit to recall the monitor.After a year of any of their products, HP wants nothing to do with you. Right now i'm using my faithful old CRT monitor too, the very thing i tried to replace.

Ah well, how utilitarian of me to support big business at the expense of myself.

Convenient, Adjustable, Great Picture
This monitor powers its own speakers, which is nice because it gives you an extra outlet.It comes mounted on a light but sturdy base that can be adjusted down to the level of the desk and up to about six inches.A cd is included, but installing the software was not necessary on any of the three PC's I hooked the monitor up to.It works perfectly if you just plug it in.Images are crisp and vivid, and the adjustable base makes it even easier to tuck this already flat monitor into a corner to save desk space when you are not using it.Very highly recommended.I bought it in a store a long time ago when it cost a lot more money than it does now on Amazon.com, and I still have no regrets.

Great Monitor!
After our 2 Viewsonics died on us (would shut off suddenly and not turn on again), we purchased 2 of these. We've used them now every day for over a year and they're performing as well as on day one. I will buy a 15" version for my mom.

The speakers are very convenient, however if you primarily use your computer to listen to music or watch movies, then I'd recommend replacing them with something a little more high end.
