One of the best accessories I bought to go with my new iBook
I had seen this item elsewhere described as the MacAlly Icepad. Amazon's price was good. And the item was just what I wanted it to be. Lightweight, sturdy enough, able to fold fairly flat and slip inside my computer bag. Sets the laptop at an angle allowing air to circulate beneath the bottom. It still gets a little warm, but nowhere near as much as when I use the laptop without it. The rubbery surface on both sides keeps the computer in place on the Icepad and also steadies them both on your lap or in bed. Something else I really like is the elevation the angle gives the keyboard. Not only does it keep the iBook from overheating, it gives a more comfortable typing position, whether on a desk or on my lap. My iBook has a 14" screen. The Icepad is perfectly adequate for that.

The jaguar of laptops for discerning users
I have had the Apple iBook 800MHz laptop for about 6 months and have yet to experience any technical difficulties.

If you're seeking a stable, reliable, high-performance, and visually appealing laptop, you should seriously consider the venerable Apple iBook. Though more expensive than today's P4 1.X laptop PCs, Mac OS X alone is enough to convert even the most diehard PC user. Though getting around the "unique" interface of the OS can take some getting used to, you will surely appreciate its stability and user-friendliness.

With upgraded memory, an AirPort card for wireless web surfing and Office:Mac, you will have everything you need to work or play with incredible performance for everyday tasks. Throw in the iLife suite of applications for DVD playback, music/MP3 management and much more, and you have an amazing productivity pack for multimedia, a longtime strength of Apple computers.

I would wholeheartedly recommend the iBook for those seeking a trusty companion for work, play, or multimedia. The 800MHz G3 processor has never been insufficient for any task I've thrown at it and the AirPort card makes an ideal accessory for connecting to the Internet without wires.

If you have $1400-2000 to spend on a laptop, don't overlook Apple.

Edit: My pre-owned iBook is now nearly 11 months old and has developed the rampant logic board failure, which has plagued many a user. Luckily, with about a month left in my 1-yr AppleCare warranty, I did not have to pay a cent and waited about a week and a half to get it back.

Please keep in mind that if you purchase a newer G3 iBook, you may very well be one of those who experiences a logic board failure, and apparently it can come back again and again. Buy the 3-yr AppleCare Protection Plan and you won't be sorry.

Should work well...but doesn't.
I have used Mac's for a bout 4 years now and I quite like apple products for the most part (other than the usual complaints!). But I bought this ibook in Dec of 2002, and at this point I really wish I could get my money back. Maybe I just got a lemon, but it has already had to be sent back to apple once (took over a month to get back too!). After 2 months of heavy usage (I travel, and it's my only computer) the machine just died and would not start up. After much difficulty sending it off (and hours of stupid tech support walk throughs)they replaced the hard-drive and optical-drive. I don't really think it fixed the problem though. The machine gets very hot with extended use, and I am still having the same problems as I was before I had to send my machine off. Problems like slugish performance (that wasn't the case when i first got the machine, as it was very quick), programs crashing unexpectantly, modem errors, programs not performing correctly, etc. I am very afraid the hard-drive will just die on me again, so I neurotically back up my data every week. honestly I really think it has to do with the fact this machine gets so hot, but that is just my layman theory.
Basically I wish I had spent the extra cash and got a powerbook. Maybe that would have worked better.
I hope this reveiw helps you make a better buying decision. Maybe I just got a lemon, but I wouldn't buy an ibook ever again.

The switch was worth it!
I love my new I-book.In addition to it's sleek appearance it offers everything my PC offered plus more.The picture is so crisp and clear, everyone at work mentioned it looked better than most of their television sets at home.The sound quality isn't the greatest, but isn't an I book all about portability.I bought some inexpensive headphones and the sound is now incredible.I couldn't be more pleased with my purchase.Buy an Ibook it's worth switching to!

Outstanding Laptop
Over the years I have used a wide variety of computers. Recently, I decided to purchase a top-of-the-line iBook (800mhz-40gb-Combo Drive-640mb ram) for personal and professional use. Apple has really done a great job on this laptop. Besides looking great, the iBook provides a first rate user experience. The operating system is ingenious and has yet to crash. I get about 5.5 hours of run time on it's lithium-ion battery. I use my ibook for every imaginable task, from running large graphics through photoshop to testing sites via it's apache server application. I even do some 3D work on it from time to time. I run Word, Power Pt. and Excel with no problems. If fact, it runs these programs better than on the dell I use. If I wish I can even run XP on the rascal via virtual PC. I tried to think of any downshots to buying the iBook, and I can't think of many. My only suggestion would be to get a higher end model and purchase the maximum amount of ram. Two minor increases in the price, but definately well worth it. A word about the one star review - they couldn't have possiblely purchased the same product I did. I hear about this PC/apple rivalry taking this form and that's unfortunate. I guess it's a case of the fox and the grapes. What one of the previous reviews said is true, pc laptops are underclocked to extend battery life and reduce heat buildup. The OS is another matter, XP is a country mile behind the macintosh operating system. If you were to spend time working in both OS(s) it would be clear. The aqua environment is easier to look at and interact with than the interface Windows provides. If you intend to spend any time in front of one of these things that fact alone is a big consideration.

I made the Switch!
After much research (and just having bought a Dell Desktop 1 year prior) I bought my very first Mac, an iBook on 11/02.I have to admit that the first 2-3 weeks I had my doubts, just trying to get used to a new OS.However, 5 months later, I am very happy with this small, but powerful machine.I agree with some of the other posters that for basic computing, etc. this laptop is the answer.I love the beauty of the iBook, the design and the ease of use.A book that I would highly recommend if you're new to Mac OS X isDavid Pough's "Mac OS X: The Missing Manual".This book has been a huge help to me in learning the OS and just how to navigate around.I also have the Airport Card (not Extreme) and it works great for wireless surfing.I could go on, but you get the point:I love my iBook and am glad I made the Switch! ... Nice Computer So Far
Very fast computer. 2nd Drive is noisy, other than that the computer is very quiet. The network port would only connect to my wireless router at 10Mbps even though a network cable, but would connect to other network devices normally. Speakers are OK. You will want to look at the Sony RA834G before buying since it is a newer model with similar specs.

I had to return the first RA828G to the store and exchange it because it had a ton of problems and was unstable.The one I have now works pretty well so far.

Great Machines
I've bought Sony VAIO's for years and I havn't had a single problem. They come with everything that you need and more and are very upgradable for when you need it. I would recommend this or any other VAIO and can almost 100 percent guarantee that you will not have a problem with it. If you do, they have an outstanding customer support that will actually HELP you.

Lemon - Terrible experience with this Sony product

Could damage some notebooks!Beware!
I would buy this except the airflow is wrong for my laptop and I believe could damage it. Averatec notebooks are very powerful packages for a relatively modest price, however they do run hot, just like their more expensive cousins. I do need a cooler, but it has to be one that blows air toward the bottom of the case, since that is where the air intake is located. A negative pressure would work against the computer cooling fan and would likely in higher internal temperature. The widely distributed Targus works the same way. I don't know how many laptops have the air intake on the bottom, but that is something to check before buying one of these coolers. Amazon could really help by being sure that the information was included in the description of all such coolers. Some tell you and some don't. I'm still looking.

Don't Buy Anything from Tiger Direct
Don't order anything from Tiger Direct!When I received this item, the USB power cord was missing and the manufacturer was different from the one I ordered.I wasn't surprised that there was a problem because right on top of the package was a form with the procedure for returning items. When I called Tiger Direct, I was disconnected multiple times but finally got through their maze of a phone system.I was told that they could not just ship me the missing cable.I had to repack everything in the original boxes, ship it back AT MY OWN EXPENSE and wait for them to approve the return before they would ship me a new item.What kind of customer service is that?

One of the thinnest noteboook fans.
Unfortunately, the Amazon.com site gives almost no information for this notebook cooler.I was looking for a thin notebook cooler (some of the ones out there are 20mm thick or more).

This one is one of the thinner ones (there are a couple that are as thin or slightly thicker).Its dimensions are 11.8 x 9.1 x 0.5 inches. It's rated at 28 CFM and 25dBA noise.It has two 80mm x 10mm fans.It is powered through one of the notebook's USB ports.

I got this cooler because my Dell Inspiron 8500 was getting quite hot underneath, despite being slightly elevated already on a base station.

I picked this particular notebook cooler out of the several that are now available because of its thin size and the location of the fans, which are right where my notebook/base station gets the hottest.

So far, it works great.The air blows gently out the back of the pad so that it doesn't blow all over the desk.It is very quiet and I can barely hear it (although sometimes one of the fans starts to rattle very faintly, like computer fans sometimes do).

One of the main drawbacks is that it has a fairly slick plastic surface and the notebook/base station tends to slide all over it. I've put some double sided tape underneath to help stick it in one place.

Great product!
After owning several higher end laptops over the years, I was a little leary about purchasing a laptop under $1000. All I can say is "WOW". The quality of this laptop is as good if not better than the higher end units I have owned. Admittedly, there are much lighter units on the market, but what does a pound or two really mean when you consider the prices of the lighter units. This unit is fast, it has good RAM, the CD burner is nice, and I had it up and running in a matter of minutes! The packaging was more than adequate, and I ordered it on Friday and received it the following Wednesday! Quick service! My advice is, if you are looking at the higher ticketed "main stream" name brands, do yourself a favor and save a few bucks. The Basics
An awesome roster of portable computers designed for those who won't accept anything less than the finest mobile performance, Toshiba's P25 series of Satellite notebooks will handle virtually any duty you might normally reserve for high-end desktop PCs. As powerful "desktop replacement" notebooks, they are somewhat bulkier and less battery efficient than today's new breed of ultra-lightweight notebooks. However, true power users will find the extra size a small price to pay for amenities such as high-end Pentium 4 processing, solid 3D graphic capabilities and massive 17-inch widescreen displays. This model, the Satellite P25-5263 Notebook PC, features all of the above plus DVD recording and a spacious 80 GB hard disk.

Processor
At the heart of any computer lies the CPU (or processor), a massive collection of miniature transistors that governs the speed and power of the entire unit. Some of today's notebooks are equipped with high-end CPU's on par with those found in top-of-the-line desktop PCs, while others are quick enough only for basic duties such as word processing, email and the like. The Satellite P25-5263 lies firmly in the latter category, equipped with a blazing 3.2 GHz Intel Pentium 4 processor with Hyper-Threading. Hyper-Threading, a new Intel technology, allows a single CPU system (which most are) to behave at times as a dual CPU system, thus adding substantially more speed to some high-end tasks. Running at 3.2 GHz, this particular processor would be one of the fastest in any notebook, but it is nothing less than spectacular with its Hyper-Threading support.

Memory
Computers typically store information on their hard drive, but they keep frequently and recently accessed data in Random Access Memory (RAM) for faster retrieval. More RAM means more efficient computing, superior multitasking and less strain on your hard drive. The Satellite P25-5263 incorporates 512 MB of RAM, more than enough for most situations. Ultra-demanding users may want to expand their RAM, and with the Satellite P25-5263 they can, to a boggling maximum of 2048 MB.

Video
CPU's are usually so busy doing basic calculations that they need help translating visual output to the viewing screen. This is the duty of the graphics card (or graphics controller). This system's graphics controller is an nVidia GeForce FX Go5200 with 64 MB of dedicated video RAM. While a graphics card with 128 MB or more of video RAM is considered ideal for a completely smooth frame rate in state-of-the-art 3D games and 3D animation apps, this card is nevertheless comparatively powerful and more than enough for all but the most demanding gamers and 3D artisans.
