5-0 out of 5 stars I love my T41
buy 2 gigabytes of ram on the web for about $500 instead of upgrading through IBM, get the IBM a/b/g wireless and you will enjoy the best computing I have ever seen -- other computers I use are dell 600m and desktops, this is fast and with best keyboard and great screen
Jeff

5-0 out of 5 stars Zippy, dependable, and a joy to use
I have a 14-month old T40, which is nearly identical to this T41. My T40 ThinkPad has been extremely dependable. Also, as with other IBM ThinkPads, the keyboard, display, and general design make it a joy to use. It is also the smallest and lightest full-featured laptop I've ever own or used.

The build quality is very good. The bottom does not get very hot on your lap, unlike the competing models by other manufacturers. The hard drive is zippy, as are the processor and RAM.

I've never had a problem getting through to technical support (though I have not needed them too often). Once, I was having a very minor problem with the keyboard; I called them and they overnighted a whole new keyboard to me.

The only issue is that the battery life is less than advertised - about 2.5 hours on a single charge rather than 4-5. This is long enough to watch a DVD on a transcontinental flight. But not enough to watch a DVD *and* play games (or, God forbid, get some work done) during the flight.

The ThinkPad may cost a few extra Robert DeNiros, but when you consider that you're going to have and use your laptop for 2-4 years, I think it's well worth paying extra to have a machine that is so well-designed and such a joy to use.

Amazon.com Product Description

Sony's Vaio K Series ergnomically designed notebooks combine entry-level affordability with versatile multimedia and communications power. The eye-catching PCG-K27 features a gently slanted full-sized keyboard that provides a comfortable hand and wrist position. The enhanced widescreen format LCD lets you take full advantage of watching DVD moviews as well as view side-by-side page layouts. The K27 features an integrated 802.11b/g wireless LAN, 15.4-inch screen, 60 GB hard drive, combo DVD+/-RW drive, 2.8 GHz processor, and 512 MB of installed RAM. It also comes with Sony's Vaio Creation suite of multimedia applications.

The Basics

  • Hard Drive: Though not world-beating in size, the 60 GB enhanced-IDE hard drive offers more than enough capacity for storing documents and productivity software for road warriors.
  • Processor: The 2.8 GHz Pentium 4 processor is one of the fastest processors currently available on the notebook market--a definite plus for a video-centric PC. It also has a 512 KB L2 cache and a 533 MHz front-side bus speed.
  • Memory: The 512 MB of built-in memory is a good start for power users. It has two memory slots in total, with a maximum memory expansion up to 1 GB (2 x 512 MB).
  • CD/DVD Drive: It is equipped with a combo DVD+/-RW and CD-RW drive. For DVD+R discs, it has a 2.4x write and 4x read speeds. For DVD-R discs, it has a 4x read/write speed. For CDs, it has a 16x write/8x rewrite/24x read speed.
  • Keyboard & Mouse: This notebook has an 86-key keyboard and electro-static touch pad.
Sound and Graphics
The K25 features ATI IGP 345M graphics card with 64 MB of shared video memory (meaning that memory is taken from the PC's main RAM). It has a maximum resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels. Sony's exclusive XBRITE LCD technology delivers ultra crisp and super bright graphics. It also has an AC'97 sound card that's integrated into the main board, and comes with two built-in stereo speakers.

Connectivity and Expansion Slots
The K25 has an integrated 802.11g wireless LAN (which is compatible with the more widespread 802.11b and offers faster data transmission rates). You get a decent--but not overpowering--offering of connectivity options, including both high-speed USB 2.0 and FireWire:

  • 3 USB 2.0 ports for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players
  • 1 FireWire (also known as IEEE 1394 or i.Link) ports for connecting digital video camcorders and other peripherals
  • 1 VGA monitor port
  • 1 PCMCIA (or PC Card) slot (Type I/II)
  • 1 headphone jack and 1 microphone jack
  • 1 Memory Stick slot (Memory Stick Pro compatible)
It also has an integrated 56K modem (V.90) and an RJ-45 LAN network port (for a 10/100 Ethernet connection to networks and DSL/cable modems).

Preloaded System and Software
This K25 comes with the Windows XP Home Edition operating system, and it features Microsoft Works 7.0 (for working with word processing and spreadsheet documents). It's also loaded with Sony's Vaio Creative suite of multimedia applications, which includes PictureGear Studio (digital photo), SonicStage (digital music), Sony MovieShaker, DVGate Plus (digital video), VAIO Media (network file sharing), and Click to DVD (for burning DVD discs). Other preloaded titles include a 60-day trial of Microsoft Office, Quicken 2004, Norton Internet Security (with 90-day trial subscription), InterVideo WinDVD, and a 90-day trial of AOL.

Dimensions and Weight
Measuring 14 x 1.6-2.2 x 10.9 inches and weighing 8.04 pounds (with battery), the K25 won't load you down, thought its size and weight aren't for the ultimate road warrior.

Power
The K25 comes with the PCGA-BP2NY rechargeable lithium ion battery; it has an estimated battery life of 1.5 to 3.0 hours.

What's in the Box
This package contains the Sony Vaio PCG-K25 notebook PC, rechargeable lithium-ion battery, AC adapter, and operating instructions. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Great Monitor, Not Great Computer
First off, the monitor is absolutely stunning.

On the more substantial, i bought the item in August and by September, I was getting the "Blue Screen of Death" on a regular basis. Technical Support was not much help. Of course, I realized this was more than just the new computer adjusting and by the time i brought it back to the store i bought it from, the 30 days ran out, so i had to ship my machine back to Sony.

They fixed it fine and in less than 10 days, but 30 days later, I was beginning to have spotty network issues and the cd/dvd drive died completely. After many hours on the phone with tech support, i am once again without my very expensive laptop for the second time in the five months since ive owned it.

When it works it is fine, but i would not recommend this computer because it has too many problems (i have since discovered many of the unhappy sony vaio owners) and you can get a decent computer for several hundred dollars less.

if they offered me a refund, or to buy me a lower end version of a Mac or even a Dell, i would take it in a minute.

4-0 out of 5 stars look for private sellers
Buyers watch out for private sellers
There are a lot of private sellers trying to rip you off .prices look cheap when you send the money you wont get the product or your money back.

Look for the specific items that scammers try to do:

1. Look at the seller's id they look like some what irrelevant. Example (amazon_cheap)(Sony_Amazon)
2. Look at the sellers rating it says just launched because the sellers like to create many e mails as they can.
3. In the sellers comments they will say like "please contact me before buying. Otherwise I won't send you the item".
4. When you send the e mail to them they will say "we are a small company in Romania or UK or Spain trying to evolve to sell outside the country". They will say send money through western union. When I get the money you will get the notebooks with in 2 business days.
5. They will send detailed sellers address where to send the money western union (Spain). I said "I know the address in Spain can I come and pay to that address" he said "I will do only through online" this is cheater.

When you send money through western union you won't get your money back.

Escrow and Amazon secure payment are the trusted payment.

I got an e mail from a seller he said "I will get transaction only through Amazon secure payment. I thought he was good seller. Next e mail he wrote "tell me your complete address I will forward the address to Amazon" I gave him my address .

With in 1 day I got a e mail from "Amazon secure payment" from address looked like it was from Amazon, but when I clicked on reply the to address said "(something@yahoo.com) it was not a e mail from Amazon in that message it said Amazon wants you to make payment through western union. I wrote the email to Amazon they said we will not allow any one to pay through Amazon these are fake e mails trying to rip peoples money.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great Laptop for Its Price!
I use my laptop at least 3 to 4 hours a day, and regularly travel between work, home, and school.I just bought this laptop and really enjoy the speed and large screen it affords. The built-in wireless network card works well, and has an "off" switch so you can turn it off when you aren't using it.

My only caveat is that the backlight for the LCD died after only 11 days of use and had to have it replaced.I haven't had any problems several months later, and am still satisfied.I've played games (though not the latest releases), developed software, and run office applications successfully on this machine.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just got one on 8/1/04
Nothing screwy so far. The X-brite screen really stands out and makes everything so much sharper.

I use it 12+ hours a day, with alot of burning DVD's and editing.

I opted for the K-25 over the K-27 because it is essentialy the same but 2-3 hundred more for the CPU.

My only complaint is the ports are not covered, my old Grx series had "flaps" that covered the USB/Firewire/etc... to keep out dust and debris.

Amazon.com Product Description

Built specifically for business road warriors, the corporate class IBM ThinkPad T22 is a thin, light notebook that will help you get the job done, wherever you roam. While it's powered by an older Pentium III processor and Windows 2000, this factory reconditioned notebook PC is a solid value and great for standard business computing tasks while away from the office. Weighing just over 5 pounds and measuring 1.3 inches thin, this notebook features a 20 GB hard drive, 128 MB of installed RAM, a bright 14.1-inch screen, and a removable DVD-ROM drive.

The Basics

  • Hard Drive: The 30 GB hard drive is quite small in comparison to contemporary business-oriented notebooks (where 60 GB is becoming more the standard). However, it's still more than enough room for loading a business productivity suite and storing a wealth of spreadsheets, documents, and presentations.
  • Processor: The older 1.13 GHz Intel Pentium III processor provides the biggest savings for this budget notebook. While not speedy or robust enough to handle heavy duty multimedia processing, it's stable and nimble enough for basic business-oriented software. It also features a 100 MHz front-side bus and 256 KB L2 cache.
  • Memory: The 128 MB of installed RAM is just adequate for word processing tasks, but you'll want to maximize the 512 MB RAM limit to give yourself better productivity.
  • CD/DVD Drive: The DVD-ROM drive enables you to access CDs and DVD movies while on the road. It's also removable, so you can travel even lighter.
  • Keyboard & Mouse: This notebook has a standard 86-key keyboard and electro-static two-button touchpad.
Screen, Graphics and Sound
The 14.1-inch screen has a maximum resolution of 1600 x 1200 pixels, and video and graphics (16 bit) are powered by the S3 SuperSavage IXC16 processor. It also features an integrated Sound Blaster 16/Pro-compatible audio card with headphone and microphone jacks.

Connectivity and Expansion Slots
The T23 is loaded with just the basics (i.e., no wi-fi) for external connectivity:

  • 1 USB 1.1 ports for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players
  • 1 VGA monitor port
  • 1 Serial port
  • 1 Parallel port
  • 1 infrared port
  • 1 S-Video out
  • 2 PCMCIA (or PC Card) slot (Type I/II)
  • 1 headphone jack
  • 1 microphone jack
It also has an integrated 56K modem (V.90) and an RJ-45 LAN network port (for a 10/100 Gigabit Ethernet connection to networks and DSL/cable modems).

Preloaded System and Software
This ThinkPad T23 comes with the Windows 2000 operating system, which is outdated in the world of XP but is still a fairly powerful system. It also comes preloaded with the Lotus SmartSuite (for word processing and spreadsheets), MediaMatics DVD Express, Access ThinkPad, ConfigSafe, PC-Doctor, ThinkPad Assistant, IBM Update Connector, SystemSoft Card Wizard, and ThinkPad Utilities

Dimensions and Weight
Perfect for portability, the T23 weighs 5.2 pounds and measures 12 x 9.8 x 1.3 inches (WxDxH).Power
It's powered by a lithium-ion rechargeable battery that has up to a 3.2-hour battery life.

This package contains the IBM T23 26488MU factory reconditioned notebook PC, rechargeable lithium-ion battery, AC adapter, and operating instructions. It is backed by a 6-month limited hardware warranty. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars VAIO PCG-K27 Review
I bought this model (Pentium 4, 512 MB Ram, 80 GB Hard Drive) this last year to repleace a previous notebook model that was stolen.I use it at home in place of a desktop model.Very happy with it.Only complant is the sound quality when playing CDs or DVDs.

3-0 out of 5 stars Overall good but...
Very good in a lot of aspect. Design, power, amazing screen.
Now the important downsides:

- supports only WinXP (no Win2000 / 2003, no linux)
- poor graphics drivers, and no possibility to update them (not compatibly with standard ATI ones)
- poor other drivers

Beside that, it is a good value.

1-0 out of 5 stars Defective Hard Drive, BEWARE
I purchased the 60 Gig Hard drive version of this computer in July, and on December 5th the hard drive broke. It will not mount and makes grinding and clattering noises. I have lost data. This is not a quality product. I am now returning it to Sony (Sony Event#E26545346). I thought Sony made quality products and I paid a premium for their notebook compared to other notebooks and look at what I get. I am very unhappy. I wonder if this is more than just an isolated incident. I will never buy a Sony product again and do everything I can to stop others from buying Sony's products.
So if you like your hard drive unexpectingly crashing and like to lose data then go ahead and roll the dice and buy this computer.

4-0 out of 5 stars Watch out for this notebook on a large network!
I bought this notebook in august, and was using it in school! Well, after 2 days, it started crashing like mad!!!! and that's because of it's operating system(home edition!)! u might consider a different notebook if you're going to use it on a large network, beccause it'll crash if the processor is not working! so in order to prevent it from crashing, i run a media program all day long!!!!!!!!!! so ask for the professional windows edition!
Apart from that, it's a pretty solid notebook! BUT TOOOO heavy!! i tried carrying it to the library twice, and after each journey, i'm yearning for a massage! it weight's about 12 lbs!!!!!

1-0 out of 5 stars bait and switch
I thought I was ordering a computer for $750.00, but when the order came back, its price was $1,764.96. I have tried to cancel this order, but don't know if I was successful. There is no way that I can see to contact amazon.com accounting department to clarify this portion of my otherwise book order. My rights were taken away, and I did not have the information on the real price of this item until I got my confirmation. If I don't hear from Amazon.com, I'll have to cancel my order via my credit card.Does anybody know how to contact these people???Helpless @ mehlman@patmedia.net. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Bulky, heavy, ugly...SAVE YOUR MONEY!
I thought this was a good idea. The Apple adapter for my 12" Powerbook overheated and died (my first "failed" Apple product), so I decided to play it safe and buy another brand. The Kensington adapter could charge in a car, on a plane, and at home, so I figured, what the heck. What a disaster. It charges fine, if a little slow, but it is so HEAVY and so POORLY DESIGNED, I cringe every time I have to use it. You need to uncoil two heavy cords (wrapped with velcro that sticks to the other cord, making for a mess of wires in your bag) and plug each into either side of this big white brick. Kensington obviously thinks a cool blue light on the brick makes up for the ugly cord issue, but there is no indicator light showing when the charge is done, like Apple has. The cord wraps neatly onto Apple's adapter, and you don't even need to carry the extension cord if you don't want to. Also, the combined length of the 2 cords and the big white brick in the middle is still much shorter than the Apple adapter + extension cord. I hated this so much, I went and bought a replacement Apple adapter after all. Why can't products work as well as Apple's? DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT, unless you plan to leave it plugged in at home for convenience.

1-0 out of 5 stars Worst idea ever...
I purchased this to expand the usefulness of my G3 iBook. I really wish I hadn't. The interchangeable plugs seem like a great idea, but the plug is significantly heavier than the original iBook power adapter's plug. It placed too much strain on the laptop's power port, and eventually caused something internal to snap, leaving me with a G3 paperweight.

4-0 out of 5 stars Lifesaver for long car trips!
This product preformed as expected, that is, perfectly. I plugged it into the car and the adapter into my iBook G4, and it worked just fine. It appeared to charge the iBook as well as support its power draw. I don't know the technical specifications, but I know one thing: it worked.

It was very useful and allowed me to not be concerned about battery performance in the car. However, despite the perfect performance, there was a small issue with setup. I would guess that the power adapter plug that goes into the iBook G4 was actually designed for the iBook G3, because the adapter does not fit snugly. While the power adapter for the Apple supplied charger fits right in, the Kensington adapter leaves a few millimeters of the plug exposed. Additionally, there is no LED on the plug itself, so I have no idea if it is done charging or not (there is a one-color LED on the box of the adapter, but this does no indicate if the battery is charging or not.

Despite these little problems with the plug, I would certainly recommend this product to everyone with an iBook or PowerBook that takes long car trips. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Toshiba's diregard for the consumer
If you want to experience the latest Windows Media Center 2005 edition software, this machine is not the right one. It comes loaded with Media Center 2004. Once you purchase it, you will realize that you wont have many of the functionality of Windows Media Center 2005 such as concurrent record and play, better interface etc. The worst part is Toshiba does not give you an upgrade path and you are stuck. It is a distasteful feeling to realize you have hardware that has outdated software the day you purchase it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sellers who are Fraudlant
When I see an item advertised on the Amazon Web site and the product has a very low price and the Seller asks the Buyer to email them before they purchase, I question it.Most of these situations, the Seller asked for cash to be sent via Western Union and the Seller never sent the product. This same item was advertised for $1200 on 10/2/04 and was reported to be a fraud and removed from the Amazon site. Now, just two days later another Seller is selling the same item at a very low unreal price.I would like Amazon to investgate this Seller who is advertising this product at this low price.I ordered this product from another Vendor on another web site for $2299.I rate the product 5 stars, however question Sellers who have extremely low prices and ask that you email them prior to submitting the order.Thank you, Frank Robert Speece

5-0 out of 5 stars Qosmio -A Winner!
I buy a new laptop every year, but I don't upgrade until I find a machine with specs clearly exceeding the last. Qosmio is clearly a step above most other laptops. The first thing you notice when you crank it up for the very first time is the screen. Although the maximum resolution is a disapointing 1024X768 pixels, the screen is absolutely the brightest screen I have ever seen anywhere including most CRT's! The display is incredible! And, as it turns out, 1024X768 is a very comfortable resolution. I am grateful for the 80GB hardrive which comes with a toshiba utility to reduce hardrive noise... but for the life of me I can't figure out why.. the machine is very quiet and the Centrino chip runs in conjunction with the 855chipset flawlessly and cooly. I boosted the memory to 1GB. The machine comes with a single 512mb chip, and I reccomend going to 1GB... otherwise it's like driving a BMW at 55mph. The computer comes with windows media edition and two remote controls! I was flabergasted when I saw them both. One is used withing the windows environment for media center. The other is used to play dvd's or cd's or TV from a power off condition without loading windows! That makes this machine a wonderful DVD player with a 15" screen! It's very cool! but still 2 remotes? Couldn't they figure out how to make one do everything?
The DVD/RW super-multidrive is a huge improvement over previous versions I tested it and it will write a DVD video at 8X speeds provided you ensure you use 8X blanks. Previous toshiba laptops have included easy systems Drag N Drop CD+DVD but not this one. The supportive softwre is adequate... about all I can say. Tohsiba chose to limit the screen size to 15" when everyone else is moving to 15.4" wide screens and even 17" versions. But I find those machines extremely bulky. I like the portability of a 15" screen and the Brightness is worth it. Not sure of the value of a TV tuner in a laptop but I tested it and it works well... makes for cool bragging rights! the harmon kardon speakers are well above laptop average but not as good as the previous Toshiba 5205-S705. Battery time is rated at 2.5 hours plus. I haven't completely tested it but it's gotta be close. I'm sure if the screen was a standard version the battery would be at 3 to 3.5 hours. It weighs around 8 pounds which is about average for comparable 'other brands'. Although I am partial to Toshiba, I compared with Sony, HP, and Dell. Each had similar models... sort of. The Sony A series similarly equipped priced out about $300.00 more retail. the Hp was the cheapest but didn't measure up in features. Dell, continues to use DVD+'s only when everyone else is installing DVD+-RW's so that knocked them out. Setup was a breeze. toshiba includes works 7 and office student edition along with microsoft one note. The thing comes with a joint use secure digit memory slot or a sony memory stick slot (can't use both at once... which isn't a problem). I bought a san disk flashcard pcmcia card adapter for 12 bucks and now it takes about any kind of memory I could imagine. The ports are now no nonsense... no covers to flip open or remember to close.
Bottom line if you are looking for a 'multimedia' laptop powerhouse with decent battery time and the latest features at a resonable price... this one works. Reccomended accessories: another 512mb or ram (total 1gb;) a targus sport deluxe backpack; and consider upgrading the warrantee to system guard 3 yr (you drop it they fix it).

3-0 out of 5 stars Overpriced
Now I don't have the Qosimo and as much as I like Toshiba ( got a satellite ) and sure its a fine machine , its just not worth it .

For that price you can buy yourself a higher specd notebook even from Toshiba ( wait for the new models ) and add most of the Qosimo features by buying addons/software .

You'll get a better deal , better value and much more power .

The Qosimo is a step in the right direction , but don't let the companies charge you a hefty premium for nothing but a name . ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Fair Notebook Bad Customer Support
It is an OK computer. It feel flimsy compared to my old HP. When my AC adapter went bad customer support would not just send me a new one in exchange for the broken one. I had to send in the notebook and the AC adapter. Major inconvenience having to wait plus I didn't like the idea of sending a flimsy computer through the mail. I will not buy from toshsiba again because of their customer service. If you are considering a toshsiba then you may want to buy their premium warranty package if want to be treated well.

3-0 out of 5 stars 512 MB ram indeed
if it shows up as only 480, that means you have a 32mb integated video card. This is something called shared memory.

3-0 out of 5 stars decent laptop but a bit below my expectations
A nice laptop, but the sound is below fair.
Also it is advertised as having 512MB memory but at least my config. (from amaz) came with 480MB. Also the HD is 74G instead of the advertised 80G.

A very good battery and reasonable display. The performance seems good.

5-0 out of 5 stars All that I hoped...
I bought this computer for my daughter for Christmas and had to try it first. I bought Toshiba after shopping around and checking Consumer Reports. I have had a Compaq and Sony previously This computer has all most will need, is the right size and price. It is being discounted as it seems to be discontinued, but it is current enough for most. I love this machine.

5-0 out of 5 stars Phoenomenal Laptop
I've had this laptop for a couple of weeks now.Having owned several other laptops before, I can fairly say that this is one of the best I have had the pleasure of using.

It's not the lightest laptop on the market, but certainly light enough for me to carry to class and the library every day.The battery life is much better than I expected and the sound is about as good as I've seen.

My two favorite features, however, are the large keyboard and wide screen. As someone with fairly large hands, it's nice to have a regular sized keyboard that I can type on instead of mashing several keys at a time as I am apt to do on many of the smaller laptops. What I really love, though, is the wide screen. There's nothing better than the ability to have a text document comfortably open next to a web browser or another document. It's the closest thing to having multiple monitors without having to lug an extra LCD around!

I only really have one minor gripe about the laptop and that is that some of the keys are in odd locations.eg: the windows key has been moved to the top right of the keyboard and tilde is next to the spacebar. Takes a bit of getting used to, but not really all that big of a deal.

Overall, I would highly recommend this laptop to those who need something portable, but not diminutive. It certainly isn't the cheapest one on the market, but, in this case, you certainly get what you pay for. ... Read more
