Amazon.com Product Description

The lightweight HP Pavilion dv1130us notebook PC fuses together the world of mobile computing with a portable home theater. Watch DVDs on the bright, high-definition-ready 14-inch screen, and share the experience with dual headphone jacks. You can also burn your own CDs and DVDs with the multifomat DVD+/-RW and CD-RW combo drive. The dv1130us is powered by a power-saving 1.4 GHz Celeron M processor, which provides up to a 3-hour battery life. Other features include a 60 GB hard drive, 512 MB of installed RAM, 54g wireless connectivity, and a multiformat memory card reader for easy access to pictures captured on your digital camera. For a more powerful Pentium M processor and 80 GB hard drive, see the HP dv1150us.

The Basics

  • Hard Drive: The 60 GB hard drive (4200 RPM) is an average size for notebook PCs, offering enough capacity for storing documents and productivity software for road warriors. You'll also be able to store a decent-sized digital audio library.
  • Processor: The Intel Celeron M processor is designed specifically for mobile computing, offering a balanced level of mobile-optimized processor technology, good mobile performance, and exceptional value. It features a Deep Sleep state, which helps enable longer battery life by minimizing the power consumption of the processor during brief periods of inactivity. The 1.4 GHz speed is near the top of the speed spectrum for this processor, and it also offers a 400 MHz front-side bus (FSB) speed and a 1 MB L2 cache. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance.)
  • Memory: The 512 MB of built-in memory (2 x 256 MB, DDR SDRAM) is a good start for power users, though it is a little slower (266 MHz) than RAM found in other entertainment-centric laptops. It has two memory slots in total, with a maximum memory expansion up to 2 GB (2 x 1024 MB), and you'll want to maximize the RAM within your budget to take advantage of this notebook's multimedia capabilities.
  • CD/DVD Drive: The combo DVD+/-RW and CD-RW drive is compatible with a wide variety disc formats, including DVD+, DVD-, VCD, and SVCD discs. For DVD-RW discs, it has a 1x write/rewrite speed, while for DVD+RW discs it has a 2x write/rewrite speed (DVDs are read at 5x). For CDs, it has a 16x write/10x rewrite/40x read speed.
  • Keyboard & Mouse: This notebook has a standard 101-key keyboard and two-button touchpad with on/off button and dedictated vertical scroll up/down pad.
Screen, Graphcs and Sound
The 14-inch BrightView WXGAhigh-definition widescreen display has a 15:9 aspect ratio and 1280 x 768-pixel resolution, providing 25% more screen information and the same widescreen film picture size as a standard 15-inch XGA screen. You'll get TV-quality images, even in direct sunlight. It also features the integrated Intel Extreme Graphics 2 video/graphics card (with 64 MB of shared video memory), 16-bit Sound Blaster Pro-compatible audio, and internal Harman/Kardon speakers.

Connectivity and Expansion Slots
The dv1130us has an integrated 54g wireless LAN that's compatible with 802.11b and 802.11g networks. You get a limited offering of connectivity options, but it does include super-fast USB 2.0:

  • 3 USB 2.0 ports for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players
  • 1 VGA monitor port
  • 1 S-Video out
  • 1 PCMCIA (or PC Card) slot (Type I/II, 32-bit)
  • 2 headphone jacks
  • 1 microphone jack
  • Multiformat memory card reader, compatible with Secure Digital (SD), MultiMedia (MMC), Memory Stick, Memory Stick Pro, SmartMedia, and XD cards
It also has an integrated 56K modem (V.90) and an RJ-45 LAN network port (for a 10/100 Gigabit Ethernet connection to networks and DSL/cable modems).

Preloaded System and Software
This system comes with the Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2 operating system with Advanced Security Technologies, which helps to reduce unwanted downloads and pop-ups while surfing the Web. It also comes preloaded with Microsoft Works (for working with word processing and spreadsheet documents), Symantec Norton Antivirus 2005 (with 60 days of LiveUpdate), Adobe Acrobat Reader, Sonic RecordNow, InterVideo WinDVD, InterVideo Home Theater, Apple iTunes and Apple iTunes Music Store, Adobe PhotoShop Album STE, Muvee autoProducer, Microsoft Money, MSN Encarta Plus, and Microsoft Office Student and Teacher Edition (60 Day Trial Version).

The included HP Image Zone Plus photo and imaging software makes it easy to organize, edit, share, print, protect, and store your photos and video clips. Organize and find your photos easily by timeline, keywords, and/or location using the unique photo-globe mapping tool. Remove red eye and fix other common problems. Share your photos quickly via e-mails that include thumbnails with links to the full-sized images--without downloading time-consuming attachments.

Dimensions and Weight
At 5.33 pounds, the dv1130us is highly portable. It measures a slender 13.15 x 9.24 x 1.18 inches (LxWxH).

Power
This notebook is powered by a 6-cell rechargeable lithium-ion battery, which offers up to 3 hours of battery life (dependent upon computing conditions).

What's in the Box
This package contains the dv1130us notebook PC, rechargeable lithium-ion battery, AC adapter, and operating instructions. It is backed by a one-year limiited hardware warranty and 30-day free software support. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Pavilion IS for Entertainment, not work...
I've spent the last few years using Toshiba Tecra 9000 & 9100 notebook computers.Recently I decided to try a Pavilion wide screen notebook. It was SUPPOSED to have a clock speed of 3.4 Ghz, twice that of my 2001 Tecra. It didn't, comes "standard" with 1.7 gHz. Front side buss--the truer measure of how fast the computer is going to work is supposed to be 500 mHz.Tested out at 225. My 2001 Tecra ran at 133, not that much slower. With the HyperThreading Centrino technology the HP SHOULD be a lot faster--whether word processing, doing spreadsheets or bidding on eBay (sorry, Amazon). It isn't.It DOES a good job of playing CDs or DVDs--but I have other players for those that hook up to our TV sets. Having a $1200 dvd/cd player that can run computer programs leaves ME underwhelmed. Oh, before I go: the wireless internet connection isn't too bad:I happen to have true T-3+ internet capability (54 MB/sec) with a Netgear high speed wireless router with firewall. The Tecra topped out at 8.85 mb/sec with 802.11b.the HP tops out at 45 mb/s with the firewall in place. It has the 802.11b/g.I use PC Pitstop.com and Broadbandreports.com for doing speed and bandwidth tests.
The screen is nice. It IS a bit clearer and brighter than my old laptop. It does play HD dvds nicely. The sound is noticeably better than that from my older Tecra. When using the headset--the sound is MUCH better.
Overall, I'm so "impressed" by this laptop that I'm returning it this second week of April 05, after having it about a week. Why spend $1200 on a new laptop that doesn't do much more than a 4 year old one?

5-0 out of 5 stars great deal
excellent specs for the price and comparable to the 2030us pressario..but better.Nice features - gigabit ethernet..only shame is you cant spec it before you buy it for 1 gb ram. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellently thought out, extremely portable machine
I love apple for their attention to design detail. From a power adapter that can be both a brick, or attach a longer cord, to batteries whose charge you can check without turning on the computer, to the built in high quality wireless, everything about this computer is fit and finish.

The software suite is excellent, with Apple's iApps providing a top notch integrated environment for working with digital media. The digital camera/booklet printing integration is particularly impressive, allowing you to produce high quality coffee table books out of your vacation snapshots.

Although not as fast feeling as other computers, once I upgraded the included RAM, the operations felt almost snappy, and it's been a dream to use.

5-0 out of 5 stars I LOVE IT, NOOOOO PROBLEMS
I love it, no problems!!I recommend, starting with OS 10.2 or higher and get rid of anything less than that! Also, get the airport and airport card.Wireless internet, it's fantastic!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A mellow review
Will this computer change your life?I hope not too drastically.I have found after using this computer for just over 6 months I am really glad I bought it.I had a dell and gateway laptop before I bought the ibook and I have found the ibook is more user friendly.

I use my ibook to organize pictures, hold mp3's, make family movies, surf the web, and do presentations for my master's program. It does all these tasks with no problems. The software makes sence, of course it will take time to adjust to the format.Three days after I bought the ibook I was very unsure of my choice but it really has grown on me.All the "i"programs are very easy to use and I have not found that true on my pc desktop. You will love imovie, though my co workers do think I am a dork.: )I love the wireless airport.Surfing from the couch is very convient.

The negatives.... This is not a gamer's laptop. It doesn't have amsome firepower and I can't play Quake on it.But, I don't play quake.Hoyle's card games do it for me or I use my ps2.It will scratch, get used to it, it still will turn heads and everybody will "eeww and ahhh."Virtual PC is great, but you still will not be able to play pc games well.

This is a great family computer. It is light and does everything I could ask everytime. It is a quality product and one of the very few things I have bought that 6 months later I am still thrilled I bought it.I hope you enjoy it as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great machine!
I upgraded to this from a 500mhz iBook and find it to be very responsive. Setup was a breeze -- I swapped out my Airport card from my old machine and was surfing the web wirelessly in less than 5 minutes, as well as printing wirelessly to my USB printer. With OS X 10.2 (Jaguar), I don't even need an Airport Base Station. I have an Airport card in our G3 iMac, which is connected to a cable modem, and configured Jaguar in the iMac (with once click) to share its high-speed connection with the iBook. I also downloaded the latest versions of iPhoto and iMovie and have been having a blast applying the "Ken Burns Effect" to our Christmas pictures.

That's why I love OS Xand my iBook -- they make it so easy to do amazing stuff.

If you want a great little machine that has great price/performance ratio and can go with you anywhere, then buy this iBook. My only advice would be to up the RAM, at least to 256MB.

5-0 out of 5 stars why did i wait?
i dumped windows years ago, and have been using linux since.linux is nice, and the major headaches windows gave me were fixed by linux, but linux introduces a whole new share of headaches....

i have wanted to try a mac since OS X came out, but they are so pricey, right?wrong!sure you can get a cheaper laptop, but find one with 3-5 hours battery time and a CDRW/DVD for this price.there are none.then notice this thing is smaller than the closest competitor, and faster too.don't buy the mghz myth.this 800 speed laptop with only 128 RAM does most things faster than the 1.8 pentium desktop i compared it to.it is wonderful.and the design is sleek!just buy it and take it out to do a little writing in park or take it to class with you.strangers come up and ask to touch it.it turns heads.

as others have mentioned, this (and all macs) are not hardcore game machines.you want a game machine?buy a playstation.far cheaper than a computer.you want a headache, buy anything with windows installed.you want it to just work.buy a mac.

OS X is incredible.unix power and stability, but mac easy.that beats windows easy any day.just plug it in and it is ready!print?plug in the printer and hit "print"!wizards?install disks?forget it!just plug and work.forget plug and pray.

don't do what i did.don't regret spending $$$$ on RAM and video cards a monitors only to find apple had the answer all along.switch now.save the cash. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars SUPERB KENSINGTON TECHNOLOGY...AGAIN
I looked at the iGo ac/air power converter for my mac laptop as well as Belkin's version.Though the iGo suffered from fragile power plug tips, the Belkin seemed to present a slightly better value for the money than the Kensington adapter.I chose the Kensington because of the consistancy of quality found in other products I have bought from them over the years. My recent wireless trackball purchase from them was no exception.I'm religious about well-designed products that perform.TheKensington adapter has a slick design (a la iBook's white and clear plastic). The cords are heavy guage and plugs reinforced for long term wear. Adapter tips are included for both old (G3) and (G4) iBooks and Powerbooks. Each cable (3 of them) has their own matching velcro fastening tie and fit neatly into the included black bag. (all of it, about the size of a cordless phone)Plugs fit very securely in the power adapter.Yeah, it's one more thing to carry with your laptop when traveling but you can leave your Apple a/c adapter at your desk. The adapter gets a bit warm on the plane, but you know it is working and it won't compromise your laptop because of slight changes in voltage. The price seems steep ($95.) but given the quality of construction, design and durability, it is definitely worth it. ... Amazon.com Product Description

Get all the power you expect out of a desktop PC with the Compaq Presario R3160US laptop. Road warriors will appreciate its 60 GB hard drive for storing important documents and productivity applications, as well as its built-in 54g wireless connectivity. The R3160US also features a fast, 64-bit 1.8 Ghz Mobile Athlon 3000+ processor, a DVD+RW/CD-RW combo drive, 512 MB of installed RAM, a huge 80 GB hard drive, and a 15.4-inch widescreen display that's powered by Nvidia's GeForce4 420 Go video/graphics card with 32 MB of dedicated memory.

The Basics

  • Hard Drive: The spacious 80 GB hard drive (4200 RPM) is at the very top of the range for notebook storage, and it offers more than enough capacity for both your work and home files as well as a good-sized multimedia library.
  • Processor: The 1.6 GHz AMD Athlon 64 3200+ processor offers a high level of performance that's equivalent to a 3.0 GHz Intel Pentium 4 processor--speedy enough for PC gaming, graphic design software, and multimedia creation. And with its 64-bit architecture, the R3160US is built for the increased demands of future software applications that take advantage of this architecture. It also features a 1 MB L2 cache.
  • Memory: The R3160US comes with a 512 MB built-in memory (2 x 256 MB modules, DDR SDRAM, 333 MHz)--a good start for power users. However, only one slot is accessible for upgrading; it has a maximum RAM capacity of 1280 MB (1 x 256 MB, 1 x 1024 MB).
  • CD/DVD Drive: It is equipped with a combo drive that is capable of reading and writing of both DVDs and CDs. It uses the DVD+RW format, one of two formats for rewriteable DVDs.
  • Keyboard & Mouse: This notebook PC has a 101-key keyboard and touchpad with on/off button and dedicated vertical scroll up/down pad.
Sound and Graphics
The R3160US includes Nvidia's GeForce4 420 Go video/graphics card, which produces good 3-D and DVD playback performance, helps save on battery life, and can drive an external monitro. It also features 32 MB of dedicated video RAM. The 15.4-inch flat-panel screen has a 1280 x 800 native resolution.

The audio card is integrated into the notebook's circuitry, which helps save on cost. The R3160US features two built-in JBL Pro Performance stereo speakers.

Connectivity and Expansion Slots
The R3160US offers a decent variety of external connections:

  • 3 USB 2.0 ports for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players
  • 1 parallel port for connecting older printers and scanners
  • 1 VGA monitor port
  • 1 S-Video out (for connecting to a TV)
  • 1 PCMCIA (or PC Card) slot (Type I/II compatible and 32-bit card bus)
  • 1 headphone jack and 1 microphone jack
It also has an integrated 802.11g wireless LAN (which is compatible with the more widespread 802.11b and offers faster data transmission rates), integrated 56K modem (V.92), and an RJ-45 LAN network port (for a 10/100 Ethernet connection to networks and DSL/cable modems).

Preloaded System and Software
The R3160US comes with the Windows XP Home Edition operating system, and it also features Microsoft Works (for working with word processing and spreadsheet documents). Other preloaded software includes Norton Antivirus 2003 (with 60 days of complimentary live updates), Quicken, Microsoft Money, Microsoft Encarta Online Deluxe, Adobe Acrobat Reader, InterVideo WinDVD SE (for playing DVD movies) and WinDVD Creator, and MusicMatch Jukebox.

Dimensions and Weight
Measuring 11.18 x 14.25 x 1.8 inches (L x W x H), it's not the thinnest notebook available. It weighs a moderate 7.8 pounds.

Power
The included rechargeable lithium-ion battery has 8 cells (which refers to the number of charge-storing components within the battery) and offers a standard amount of power for a notebook PC (around 2 hours of typical use).

2-0 out of 5 stars Bulky, Heavy and the hard drive really really sucks
I got this machine at work so I could work on 64-bit related data.I have been using it for almost 6 months now and I have to say that if I would never buy it.This is a desktop replacement, and as such, weighs a lot.I do travel a lot and this machine was not meant for that purpose.Forget about using it on a plane if you are not going in economy. The power consumption is simply ridiculous; I have yet to find a power adapter that will work with this thing on the place. The power adapter is a brick which just adds more weight to the whole ordeal.

Now the hard drive...oh boy.I did a clean install of Windows since I thought my old installation was the problem - but no, I was wrong.I don't know why this HD is so slow.If I am working on Word with a 100 MB document and it does the auto-saving thing, my computer is pretty much useless for two minutes, mega-frustrating.If I am writing something over the network to this laptop, rest assured that I wont be able to do anything else.My Powerbook G3 is like 4 years older than this machine, has the same hard drive and never stalls as bad as this guy.

On the positive side, it plays Ut2k4 fairly well.If I am hosting a LAN game, it takes around 3 minutes to load the next map, which is way too much. The display is nice, the keyboard is nice and the trackpad works as expected.

I have not found a place where I could get more RAM and finding replacement parts for this puppy is a mayor pain.

Would I recommend it?No, there are way better 64-bit alternatives out there. ... Read more

On receipt, this turns out to be an Apple-label product; I assume that SmartDisk bought up Apple's surplus stock and is selling them here.It works perfectly, BUT!!!This is a 45 watt charger. That means it's not appropriate for newer 15" and 17" PowerBooks (which use a 65W charger).I can't find this information in the online description, so I thought I'd add it here.

If you have an iBook or an older titanium PowerBook, order in confidence. If not... this will power your computer, OR charge it, but NOT both at the same time.Caveat emptor!

5-0 out of 5 stars How about THEM Apples?
I ordered this unpictured SmartDisk product after breaking the fragile wire on my ultra-compact Apple AC adapter with its cute stow-away prongs that never seemed to seat properly in an electrical outlet.I liked the cheaper price of the SmartDisk along with the promise of more rugged construction. What I didn't expect was another Apple-designed product, very similar to the one I'm replacing. The only difference is a slightly heavier gauge wire and a far more practical plug--it fits securely in the outlet and doesn't take up two spaces. And it's porcelain white, just like a real Apple. Life is good.

(I realized a while back that the Powerbook 12" is not a "Titanium" machine, but the experts at Apple Support assure me not to worry about compatibility issues. In any case, I've noticed no problems after 8 months use.) ... Read more

Product Description

The ThinkCentre S50 desktops feature a tool-free chassis design, which simplifies and enhances usability. Encased in a durable steel chassis, components inside the machine, such as the hard disk and memory, can easily be removed by the customer, making the PC serviceable and upgradeable, helping to limit the downtime and cost associated with on-site support. Cable routing is bundled out of the way for easy access to components and cable ends and user touch points are colored blue to be easily identified by the user. ThinkCentre S50 desktops also feature an innovative "caddy" that surrounds the hard disk drive, locking it into place without the use of tools or screws. Rubber bumpers on the caddy decrease vibration and deliver quieter operation. Other mechanical improvements have been made to the overall design of the ThinkCentre PCs, including improved airflow and reduced noise. The ThinkCentre S50 is a full-feature enterprise PC offering image and platform stability in an extremely small form factor. With dimensions of just 12.2 inches wide by 14.1 inches deep by 3.3 inches high, the ThinkCentre S50 is 62% smaller than a standard IBM desktop. It allows for flexible placement, either horizontally or vertically. The ThinkCentre S50 also features an internal power supply, two full-size PCI slots, three bays, and an industry-standard desktop optical drive. These features allow customization and easy upgrading, which is uncommon for a small form factor PC. ... Read more

Amazon Product Description

The Basics
Founded in 1998 and acquired by Gateway in early 2004, eMachines today is one of the largest vendors of PCs sold through U.S. retailers. With the T2984 Desktop PC, eMachines targets budget-conscious buyers who can't afford or justify a top-rung unit but desire more power and perks than a low-end machine can provide. Similar in stature and design to eMachines entry-level T2862 but with moderate enhancements to many critical components, the T2984 is suitable for anyone who doesn't foresee themselves taxing their computer with sophisticated business-oriented applications, high-end graphics packages or the latest 3D games.

Processor
At the heart of any computer lies the CPU (or processor), a massive collection of miniature transistors that governs the speed and power of the entire unit. Many entry-level desktops utilize "budget" processors such as an Intel Celeron, and that is indeed the case with this model. But this particular processor is a new and recently enhanced version of the venerable Celeron, nicknamed the Celeron D and carrying 256 KB of Level 2 cache and a 533 MHz system bus for perceptibly faster performance than Celerons manufactured prior to 2004. This is the fastest Celeron currently on the market, a 2.93 GHz version that doesn't quite approach the raw data-churning speed of a high-end Pentium 4 but more than holds its own against even midlevel Pentiums and AMD Athlons.

Memory
Computers typically store information on their hard drive, but they keep frequently and recently accessed data in Random Access Memory (RAM) for faster retrieval. More RAM means more efficient computing, superior multitasking and less strain on your hard drive. eMachines has partnered this unit's processor with 512 MB of PC2700 DDR SDRAM main memory, the standard allotment for a modern PC. Thusly, the eMachines T2984 is ready to speed you through medium-duty multitasking sessions and many of today's complex applications. Moreover, users may upgrade the memory (at additional cost) to a whopping 2 GB.

Video
CPU's are usually so busy doing basic calculations that they need help translating visual output to the viewing screen. This is the duty of the graphics card (or graphics controller). A graphics controller with "dedicated" video memory is preferable to a controller that "shares" the system's main memory, as it better handles complex procedures. The eMachines T2984 is equipped with an Intel Extreme Graphics 3D video controller that is integrated on the motherboard and shares 64 MB of the system's main memory. Thusly, the unit will efficiently display 2D and many 3D applications but is not recommended for demanding 3D animations such as those found in the latest high-end games unless its graphics controller is first upgraded. A display screen is not enclosed, thus allowing you to continue using your current monitor or select from today's many alternatives.

Sound
Audio is generated via an AC 97-compatible chip integrated on the motherboard. AC-97 is today's most accepted midlevel PC audio standard. Though not as sophisticated as most standalone audio cards (its audio specs aren't as good and it supports limited speaker configurations), this integrated chipset is perfectly adequate for most stereo applications. eMachines will also enclose a pair of small desktop speakers for your listening enjoyment.

Hard Drive
The unit's 80 GB hard drive is considered average in today's desktop market, offering enough space for a typical roster of applications, files and multimedia or music content. However, if you foresee yourself gathering copious quantities of space-gobbling video footage or ultra-high resolution images, you may need to transfer files to a compact disc to free up room, upgrade this drive, or add another.

Optical Drive
An optical drive is essential in today's computing world. A "CD-ROM" drive allows you to install CD-based applications and play music CDs. A "CD-RW" drive adds CD "burning", so you can also backup your important files to long-lasting discs and create personalized music CDs. With a DVD-ROM drive you can enjoy all of the above plus watch the same big budget DVD movies you watch on your home entertainment system. And with a DVD-RW drive, you can also "write" home movies to durable discs and archive files to DVD (DVDs boast more than seven times the storage capacity of CDs).

The eMachines T2984 features dual optical drives -- a CD/RW drive for playing and burning CDs and a DVD-ROM drive for playing DVD movies and the like. DVD burning is not supported in this stock configuration.

Connectivity and Expansion
Though designed for the budget conscious, the eMachines T2984 nevertheless sports all the standard amenities, and then some. Communication options include an Intel PRO 10/100Mbps integrated LAN for high-speed Internet and email access and a standard 56K modem for low-speed dial-up service. For reading memory cards from devices such as digital cameras and PDAs, the system features an 8-in-1 Digital Media Manager. And, with no less than five high-speed USB 2.0 ports at your disposal, you'll have plenty of places to plug your plug and play peripherals. eMachines has not included an IEEE 1394 FireWire port, most commonly used for fast data transfer from digital camcorders.

Operating System and Software
The system features a surprisingly generous software package headed by Microsoft's Windows XP Home Edition operating system, Microsoft's Works 8.0 productivity suite, Microsoft's Money 2004 financial center and several useful multimedia and music utilities.

Keyboard and Mouse
A Standard Multimedia Keyboard and 2-button mouse (with scroll wheel) are enclosed. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Best bang for the buck, ! Poor graphics.Limited RAM upgrade.
I was surprised to find out that Winbook, one of the original notebook manufacturers of 1990s was still out there.

Initially, I was sold to the design. C240 is thin, yet not necessarily light but solid built unit. It is nothing like Gateway's cheap plastic units. Besides, there is no extra wasted space around LCD which makes this notebook efficiently sized.

Customer Service:
The first unit I received came with a defective LCD. It was, however, replaced immediately after the first call. This gave me a chance to test the customer service quality.I actually talked to an in-country customer rep from Ohio where the company is located. He was very friendly and personal. Unlike Gateway, and Dell the WINBOOK customer service is simply SUPERIOR.

Nowadays, customer service is very important since most of the manufacturers are using same parts to build the notebooks. As a result, design and customer service become the real differentiating factor.

Technical Aspects:
1.6 GHz Pentium M, which is essential part of the Centrino technology, works great.I was able to watch upcoming Windows Media High Definition video samples with out any freezing. On board video card has 32 MB RAM.This is not a "Half Life" machine, I must warn.If the gaming is your thing, get a good desktop.

On the other hand, I must admit, the video quality, especially the 24 bit screen was disappointing.I am still having hard time to view some images properly on web pages.

The onboard wireless chip is working flawless.I wish though the unit had a manual Wi-Fi on-off switch. You can however turn the wireless by Function F1 key at any moment.Units speakers are not good enough to listen music, I suggest you to get a pair of good headphones or external speakers. I strongly suggest Altec Lansing.

One short coming that made this model lost a STAR in this review is that, it can only be upgraded to maximum of 768 MB.In brief, the unit comes with a 256 MB on-board RAM, and 256 on-slot RAM, total of 512 MB.You can only increase the RAM in the slot to maximum of 512.There is only one slot available, so you will need to take out the 256 and replace it with a 512 MB stick.I wish Winbook was smart enough to add two slots. You might have problem if one day you want to upgrade the OS to MS' Longhorn, which might be RAM thirsty.

Conclusion:
However, considering that I only paid $1,099 for this unit, I should not complain much.

I really liked this laptop. It does its job well, reasonably priced, well designed, looks expensive and most importantly, the customer service is second to none.

This is one of the best notebook available for the price as of today (Feb,2005- $1099).

WE HAVE HAD THIS LAPTOP FOR A YEAR IT IS GREAT AND EASY TO USETHE KIDS PLAY GAMES AND IT STILL GOING GOOD

2-0 out of 5 stars Poor low quality Balance Digital Technology
Not only it have design flaws, but watch out for the ones been resold here and other mayor web sites. Lots of them are comming out as salvaged laptops. Some of the sellers when ask about by email the only thing they tell you is; "If you dont like it send it back."Setting you back for shipping. Watch out for the used (like new) laptops from BALANCE. Again this are customer returns with some kind of problem or missing software. Make sure you ask before YOU BUY!
