This is a very weak product. It jammes easily, I would not reccommend it.

Fellows is overrated
It STRUGGLES with ONE SHEET OF PAPER for god sake! Also, buried in the instruction manual is that it can ONLY WORK FOR 5 MINUTES before it needs a rest, POOR BABY!! It's like you are rooting it on, "Come on 'lil fellow, you can do it!" But it can't. I don't know if the model I got was defective or if this brand is just junk. My opinion is STAY AWAY!

This shredder blows! It is a worthless POS. I can't believe it actually jams with three pieces of paper. And then it's almost impossible to get it to go in reverse. You end up having to rip the paper out by hand and then feed it through one piece at a time. I will never buy another Fellowes shredder! :-/

Don't buy this printer!
This printer binds up on two pieces of paper! If there is the least resistance during a jam, the flimsy plastic gears become stripped and the printer is trash. Shredded my respect for Fellowes
I purchased mine in July 2004.It was never that great.It died January 2005.

Problems:
-Doesn't really produce "confetti."You just get short strips.Still reasonably secure.
-The little gizmo that is suppose to start and stop the machine when you feed paper constantly sticks, so the machine needs to be turned on and off manually.(I can do that, it's just not as advertised.)
-Doesn't handle more than 3 pages very well.
-Tends to be sluggish.In 6 months it went through more oil my granddad's Studebaker.
-Lasted only about 6 months with modest use.Idon't shred more than 15 full pages a day on average.

I'll avoid Fellowes when I buy the next one.

Don't buy it for the warranty!
I have had my PS80C-2 for a little over 2 years.My cutterhead supposedly had a 20 year warranty.I regularly (every shredding session) oil the cutters with canola oil (recommended in the owner's manual) and my useage is well below the claimed duty rating.Recently, the unit began to jam more frequently and the shreds started exiting as a single mass rather than as loose shreds.I called customer support and they had me inspect the bottom of the cutterhead for broken or missing plastic fingers.Several were missing.Even though these fingers are an integral part of the cutterhead and the cutter head won't function without them, Fellowes claims that they are not part of the cutterhead and that they are not covered by warranty.Still worse, they are not an available part so my only recourse (according to Fellowes) is to buy a new shredder!Fellowes self-serving definition as to what is part of the "cutterhead" and what is not is at best dishonest.Don't buy a Fellowes shredder for the warranty as they will define themselves out of honoring it.I did get a couple of years of use out of it though.So, if you can get a reconditioned unit really inexpensively, it might be worth a shot as a disposable product.

GreatProduct!
Great for the person concerned about personal security.Had a smaller shredder before and this is definitely worth the extra money.It says it handles up to seven sheets at once, but does start to bog down with five.I don't consider this a fault because the previous unit I owned claimed it could handle three sheets, but was struggling every time I attempted two!Doesn't overheat and shutdown like the cheaper 20-40 dollar shredders that are available.

Fellow's Quality Control Guidelines Obviously Shredded
I bought this shredder looking for a good cross-cut shredder.It looked great because of size and conveniece and security for cross-shredding.It would only take two pages without sounding a bit stressed.On day three, it died.I returned it, thinking......."yeah, there is an occassional problem child."I exchanged it for another.The new one started good, fast and quiet.It could easily do four pages at a time.However, I prefer to do one to two pages as not to stress the motor on these things."Houston, we have a problem."On day five, the motor blew out.I returned it, bought a Royal Orca3500, which has only managed to last two months.Is there any shred (ar ar) of evidence out there of a good quality shredder?

Reliable & Durable...if used right
I bought the older model (SC5+) in 2002 to replace a Royal that had died after too many sheets were put through it at one time. I've been very careful with not putting more than five pieces of paper at at time through this one. It shreds well and has a great wastebasket base. For the price you can't go wrong (it's half of what my old Royal was in 1998). Just don't abuse it or it will die like some of the other reviewers' machines.

I realize that this shredder comes with a bottom of the barrel price, but even for $19, one would expect that it would at least perform the functions claimed on the box - it doesn't.It is a piece of junk.It doesn't sense paper when inserted, it keeps spinning indefinitely after shredding because the paper doesn't fall completely from the shredder, and it simply does a horrible job shredding and leaves nearly intact sheets at the bottom of the bin.

This is certainly one of the cheapest shredders out there, I am not sure you could beat the cost, but spend a few more bucks and get one that actually works.Fellowes really should be ashamed of themselves for this model.I spent about $20 more on the Royal VF700 and love it.

I was dubious but it seems to work
I bought one of these to use at work to shred not only sensitive data but outdated software CDs before discarding them. I was dubious that the waffle-like pattern this shredder impresses into the surface could render the CD unreadable but I tried reading several CDs that I had run through the device and could not read any of them. I examined one of them with a microscope and found that the indents (yes they are indents, not ridges) actually go deep enough to make small tears in the reflective layer of the CD. Could someone with very sophisticated equipment still read the CD? Perhaps, but they would probably not be able to get all of it and, as another reviewer said, if someone wanted your data that badly, they would probably use more direct methods. I like the fact that there is a shredder that doesn't actually physically shred the CD into small shards, which seem dangerous and messy to dispose of. However, if you really feel the need to physically shred CDs, you can buy the Alera 240120, available through amazon.com for $89.88.

Excellent: Fast and solid - Everyone should have one.
First off, I bought this from JR.com through Amazon and they were just first class. I got an immediate e-mail and when it was shipped, I got another e-mail with UPS tracking information. Moreover, I got the machine in four days! I was very impressed.

Now to the shredder. It is small, compact, solid and powerful. It took me a few minutes to understand just how it worked but once I figured it out, it worked flawlessly and quick. I went through a large handful of CDs in a minute or two.

I am sure I will get lots of use from this shredder. I sort of wish I had one that also shredded floppies. But once I get rid of those, I won't have any more so it's not a major thing.

The price on this unit is amazing. I was frankly surprised to get such a powerful little unit for this price.

Of course, this is not industrial strength. But for a private person or a small office, it's just perfect. You can clear out a pile of CDs fast.

Great Product
As a test I used a CD filled with freeware. I inserted a CD into the insert slot on the machine and it pulled the CD inside. After the CD was ejected I could see ridges throughout the CD (top and bottom layers) making it unreadable and safe from prying eyes. In order to test the manufacturer's promise I inserted the CD into a computer drive and tried to read the data. The computer gave me a hour glass and was unable to load the CD.

Had had mine awhile, really love it
It gets 5 stars from me for dependability and performance. It is more than enough for the average household or small business. I'm truly mystified by others here who've given it poorer ratings. If you expect it to handle HUGE pieces of paper, 5 inches thick or so, youmay run into trouble but if you follow directions and NOT jam THICK pieces of paper in it, you should be fine. Having said that, a visiting 5 year old jammed a huge wad of paper in ours and it handled it anyway. I was impressed.
Other features:

1. It seems to be relatively safe for family use, even in households with children. Since we do have children and others visit regularly, I have looked at it carefully to see if there are any obvious dangers. I don't see any.
It would NOT be safe around toddlers or babies, however (at least, if they weren't watched carefully) if only because they might be able to tip it over or jam their hands in UNDER the protective top.

2. Our trash load is much smaller because the shredded paper is much more compact and takes up less space than unshredded paper. It has a BUILT-IN electric pencil sharpener. Not the greatest pencil sharpener, but it does the job.

3. ONE CAVEAT: There isn't a one-touch button for opening or emptying the bin and the lid is a bit heavy, but perhaps this is normal (this is our first shredder). The bin itself isn't huge but I find I rarely have to change it more than twice a week. If you get LOTS of papework, you may prefer a shredder with a larger bin. I'd say we handle a fair amount of paperwork daily, including contracts that have to be shredded page by page.

BOTTOM LINE: For family or small business use, this should do fine,although it probaby is better as a family or individual shredder. Great quality for the price!

Good, stylish light-duty shredder and basket
When the second unit I brought home didn't work either (power light never came on) I figured something was screwy.There's a tiny item buried in the instructions that tells the secret: the top (shredder assembly) has to be firmly and carefully placed on the basket since, as another user said, there's a tiny recessed safety switch--see if you can find it--underneath the assembly that has to contact a thin ridge on the basket--pretty dumb engineering to make these critical parts so thin, hard to see, and unreliable. The Troubleshooting section in the manual amazingly says not a word about this problem!I would guess that 9 out of 10 of the non-functioning units mentioned here are really OK but the safety switch has lost contact.And I would also guess that the 10th unit was used too hard.If you need a fast, serious, heavy-duty office shredder, you'll have to spend more--this one is for occasional personal use.And whoever said the pencil sharpener is not great was right--it works but you have to press the pencil in very hard, and it never feels as if it is sharpening.

Don't believe all the promises
I bought this shredder for home use because of the cross-cutting and capacity for 5 sheets at a time. Well, it does cross-cut as promised, but good luck getting more than 2 sheets through at once. Maybe Fellowes meant 5 sheets of tissue paper. I wouldn't dare run a staple through despite Fellowes' claims that you can. The shredder automatically runs for 2 sec. after the paper has run through, to help clear the cutters, but after running a dozen sheets through -- one sheet at a time -- there was a massive clump of shredded paper jammimg the cutters on the underside. I don't need to shred a lot of paper, but even for small quantities, this machine just doesn't cut it -- literally. Spend a little more and buy something more heavy-duty than this little puppy.

Fellowes vs. the competition
What drew me to this shredder are the 2-year cutter warranty and the Fellowes name.

I wanted to be play it safe so I bought this shredder (ignoring others with 1-year warranties and "no-name" brands).

Since then, I've bought 2 other light-duty cross-cut shredders (hint hint).I've bought:
1) the Executive Machines EPS-511X 5 Sheet Cross-cut Shredder w/Basket from Staples item # 522296
2) the FMI 5-Sheet Cross-Cut Paper Shredder w/ Basket from CompUSA product # 290402.

Both were 20USD/AR(after reb.)-less than half of the Fellowes OD500C.

I'm happy to report that the Executive EPS-511X exceeded my expectations for a light-duty cross-cut shredder and has become my favorite.

The Executive EPS-511X has numerous advantages:
1) Costs a reasonable 20USD/AR
2) An opening on the basket rim to allow access to the confetti or to throw in paper waste
3) A flap beneath that opening to protect the hands from the cutter & to keep confetti from ejecting out
4) It is quiet
5) It stops shredding immediately as soon as the paper is done shredding
6) It's small & light
7) Not only is it small & light, but the cutter (which is heavier than the basket) is supported well enough that the shredder won't tip over and crash violently onto your floor while moving the shredder around (risking injury to a foot & adding insult to injury by spreading confetti)
8) Great set of cutters - looks clean & finished
9) Exterior looks nice & professional - the colors of the shredder top & the basket look well-matched
10) Has a green LED light indicating that it's "on."

The Executive EPS-511X would have some serious competition if other light-duty cross-cut shredders have the advantages listed above.

If you're looking for a light-duty cross-cut shredder for personal use around the home, the Executive EPS-511X (from Staples or maybe can be purchased here) is the best one I've found--at half the cost.

I'm not sure why the Fellowes OD500C is going for what it's going for. Perhaps it's the 2-year warranty, which I don't think I'll even be able to utilize; but I could be wrong.(If the shredder broke, the shipping & handling costs to send it to Fellowes would probably be close to the shredder's price.)Or perhaps the Fellowes will last longer (my shredder adventures started on Feb. 2004).

But, I probably would buy the Executive EPS-511X again if it broke down; even if it lasts only half the time as theFellowes.And the Executive might just break down first; it's the only shredder I use!

In summary, my rankings for the 3 shredders I've bought are (in order of preference):
1) Executive EPS-511X
2) FMI 290402
3) A shredder that may cost more but also does a lot more than 1 & 2
4) Fellowes OD500C

The Fellowes does have the 2-year cutter warranty going for it, of course.

Get a bigger one!
This shredder has a problem with 2 pages at a time.The basket is so small that you have to empty it constantly.

I plan to get a Fellowes strip cut with a larger capacity bin.My whole house gets these little confetti paper bits.It is a mess and not worth the extra security.

When you empty the basket, the little bits go everywhere.Very hard to keep up with the mess.

It seems the lifespan of the confetti cut shredders is shorter.The heat up quickly and jam.Sometimes the jam is permanent.

Best Personal Shredder
My dad bought a paper shredder many years ago and I thought it was overkill until I got my own place and realized just how much junk-mail includes personal information.After looking around for a long time I found a good deal at Office Depot on the OD500C Confetti-Cut Shredder and have been amazed.Although I thought of tiny squares when I read confetti-cut, it actually creates 5/32" x 2" strips.This is much better than simply cutting verticle strips since there are many more pieces to assemble if someone was to actually go through your waste.Also, the smaller rectangles sit better in the wastebasket.Finally, this unit features an auto-on switch so that it can automatically engage whenever you stick a piece of paper into the slot.If you're looking for a decently priced shredder that will handle a causal amount of work and even the occasional staple this is definitely the shredder for you. ... Fellowes PS80C-2 "Deluxe" vs. "Office" Shredder
I've done some research and am planning to buy the Fellowes PS80C-2 Shredder and noticed that Amazon sells an "Office" version (model #36180) and a "Deluxe" version (model #36180-02).The "Office" version was first available at Amazon in 1999 and the "Deluxe" version was first available in 2002.

I was curious of the difference between the models since there is a $20 difference in price (the Deluxe version being more expensive) so I called Fellowes directly .The Fellowes representative was unaware of any differences and stated that they are the same model.They do not sell a "Deluxe" model with a model #36180-02.

I noticed that one of the Amazon reviewers for the "Office" version stated that Amazon had the wrong photo posted for the "Office" shredder.This appears to be correct as the photo of the "Office" shredder (model #36180) on other web sites (including Fellowes) is what Amazon has as the "Deluxe" shredder.Do yourself a favor and buy the "Office" version andsave yourself $20.

Not exciting, but a shredder shouldn't be
Well, at the end of the day, it's just a shredder.But make the wrong purchase, and you'll never use it.

This shredder does what it advertises, which is, it makes confetti of papers containing sensitive material.But what makes this shredder worth the money is that it makes confetti with no drama.Let me explain.The motor is strong, and it can handle a good number of sheets of paper (more than 10) at once without jamming.It will handle this stack even if you put the paper in corner first; the motor just keeps churning.This is important if you have a bunch of paper to shred and you just don't want to pay that much attention to how you load the paper on top.

The motor does not have a tendency to overheat.Once again a good thing if you have lots of shredding to do.The confetti cut does save space, so you empty out the bin alot less than a strip shredder and it takes up less space in the garbage bag.You don't have to remove the motor to empty the bin, and because the bin is enclosed, much less nasty paper dust escapes into the air.

Overall, it does what it's suppose to do.In my book, that's a good thing for a shredder.

Perfect Solution for Home Office Use
I was long overdue to upgrade my home office shredder, and the PS80C-2 fit the bill very well.

My primary complaint about my old shredder was that the entire head unit had to be lifted off the basket when emptying it.Not only was it cumbersome and heavy, it would inevitably flick shreddings everywhere.So, my criterion for the new shredder was that it have a pull-out basket with no need to remove the head unit.The PS80C-2 does just that;plus, you can fit a standard 13-gallon kitchen trash bag into the basket, so the ease of emptying and risk mess is further minimized.Finally, it also has a safety feature that prevents the shredder from working if the basket it not all the way in.So, you don't have to unplug it from the wall each time you empty it.

As for shredding performance, it lives up to the promised 10-sheet capacity with no problem.How nice is it to take the daily crop of junk mail and throw it in unopened?This little wonder saves time that way.Plus, it shreds staples, small paper clips and credit cards, too.I haven't tried it with CDs, but I'll bet it would handle with ease.Also, it's relatively quiet compared to other shredders with a humming motor sound compared to my old model's high-pitched griding.

Lastly, it's got a contemporary look that matches the graphite/silver color scheme of any new Dell PC.

A very nice buy for home office use.
